COMPARISON OF FEM SOLUTION WITH ANALYTICAL SOLUTION OF CONTINUOUS AND DISCONTINUOUS CONTACT PROBLEM

Kaya, Yusuf; Polat, Alper; Özsahin, Talat Sukru

The continuous and discontinuous contact problem of a homogeneous layer loaded with three rigid flat blocks and resting on the elastic semi-infinite plane was investigated in this study by using the finite element method (FEM). All surfaces are assumed to be frictionless. The homogenous layer was loaded by means of three rigid flat blocks whose external loads are Q and P (per unit thickness in z direction). Two dimensional finite element analysis of the problem was performed using ANSYS package program. Analyzes were performed for loading conditions which are Q=P, Q=2P, Q=4P, Q=8P and Q=10P, and different values of block widths, distances between blocks and shear modulus. The initial separation loads and initial separation distances (lambda(cr), chi(cr)) between the homogeneous layer and the elastic semi-infinite plane were determined for continuous contact condition. The length of the separation zone was obtained for discontinuous contact condition. In addition to these, normal stress distributions between the layer and the semi-infinite plane were determined for continuous and discontinuous contact conditions. As a result of the study, the analytical results, and the results of the finite element method were shown by comparing as graphs and tables.

Kinetics behavior of methylene blue onto agricultural waste

    Sarici-Özdemir, Cigdem; Kiliç, Fatih

In the present work, investigations on a potential use of agricultural waste for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from wastewater are presented. Adsorption kinetics of MB has been studied using reaction-based and diffusion-based models. Three kinetic models, namely pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and the Elovich are analyzed at the temperature of 298 K for the reaction-based model. The kinetic studies showed that the data were well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Intraparticle diffusion, external-film diffusion, and internal-pore diffusion models characterizing MB were obtained. The results suggested that the agricultural waste has a high potential to be used as an effective adsorbent for MB adsorption. Pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and the Elovich models were employed to describe the desorption mechanism. The experimental results showed that the pseudo-second-order equation is the best model.

An occupational risk assessment approach for construction and operation period of wind turbines

    Gul, M.; Guneri, A.F.; Baskan, M.

As wind energy is one of the most important renewable energy sources over the globe, need for increasing safety for this type of energy is gaining importance. Although this sector is not suffering an excessive amount of fatal injury accidents, there are many aspects open for improvements in occupational health and safety management. The construction and operation processes of wind turbines include several hazards that must be reduced. This study aims to present a risk assessment for the construction and operation period of wind tribunes using a new fuzzy based method. Fuzzy analytical hierarchy process, a common used multi criteria decision making method, is applied to assign weights to the parameters of Fine-Kinney risk analysis method. Then, fuzzy VIKOR method is used to prioritize hazards. A case study is carried out for an onshore wind turbine in Turkey by using occupational health and safety experts in weighting risk parameters and evaluating compromised rankings of the hazards. Results reveal the most important hazards both for construction and operation period of the wind tribune. On conclusion of the current study, control measures for those risks and possible corrective-preventive actions for improvement are also provided.

Anesthetic potential of geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) oil for two cichlid species, Sciaenochromis fryeri and Labidochromis caeruleus

Can, Erkan; Kizak, Volkan; Seyhaneyildiz Can, Şafak; Özçiçek, Esin

The anesthetic potential of geranium oil (Pelargonium graveolens L.) was evaluated in two freshwater aquarium fish species, the electric blue hap (Sciaenochromis fryeri, 2.00 ± 0.61 g) and blue streak hap (Labidochromis caeruleus, 2.31 ± 0.52 g). Fish were exposed to nine concentrations of anesthetic (25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 200, 250, 300 μl L−1). The induction time generally decreased significantly with increasing concentration of geranium oil for both of the fish species. The recovery time increased with the enhancing geranium oil concentration. Deep anesthesia took between 61.19 ± 7.25 s and 165.43 ± 6.78 s for S. fryeri and between 73.32 ± 8.92 s and 171.12 ± 10.74 s for L. caeruleus. Recovery occurred after 96 ± 6.87 s (L. caeruleus), with the longest being 291.45 ± 8.31 s (S. fryeri). The minimal effective concentration was 75 μl L−1 for deep anesthesia for both two species, and 50 μl L−1 was found as the minimal sedative concentration at the stage of loss of equilibrium. These findings suggested that geranium oil is a new potential anesthetic for two ornamental fish species.

A new Fine-Kinney-based risk assessment framework using FAHP-FVIKOR incorporation

Gul, Muhammet; Guven, Busra; Guneri, Ali Fuat

The most crucial step of a risk assessment process that follows identifying the scope of assessment and hazards is the initial risk assessment, particularly with a risk scoring system. The Fine–Kinney method is a comprehensive method for quantitative evaluations to aid in controlling hazards. In this risk assessment method, the risk value is calculated by considering the parameters of the consequence of an accident (C), the exposure or frequency of occurrence of a hazard event that could lead to an accident (E) and the probability of a hazardous event (P). The classical Fine–Kinney method has a limitation in that it assigns an equal weight to these three parameters. Therefore, we propose a new risk assessment method incorporating a fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) with fuzzy VIKOR (FVIKOR). FAHP was used in weighting these risk parameters derived from the Fine–Kinney method. The priority orders of hazards were determined by a FVIKOR method. The proposed method enables group decision-making in assessing hazards and uses relative importance among three risk parameters by pair-wise comparison of Buckley's FAHP. Owing to the difficulty in evaluating C, E and P, linguistic terms are used in the proposed method. In addition, a case study of the evaluation of risks in the arms industry is used to illustrate the proposed method. A comparison with the classical method and fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity of an ideal solution (FTOPSIS) is discussed. The results show that the proposed method is effective in helping stakeholders to determine the risk control policies to validate the effectiveness of their risk controls.

Analytical solution to continuous contact problem for a functionally graded layer loaded through two dissimilar rigid punches

Polat, Alper; Kaya, Yusuf; Özşahin, Talat Şükrü

A continuous contact problem of functionally graded layer resting on an elastic semi-infinite plane, which is loaded with through two different blocks is addressed in this study. The elasticity theory and integral transformation techniques are used in solution of the problem. The problem is reduced to a system of singular integral equations, and solved numerically by the aid of appropriate Gauss–Chebyshev integration formula. It is assumed that the elastic semi-infinite homogeneous plane is isotropic and all surfaces are frictionless and continuous. The shear modulus and the mass density of the FG layer vary exponentially along the thickness direction.

Experimental investigation of the flow around a simplified ground vehicle under effects of the steady crosswind

Tunay, Tural; Firat, Erhan; Sahin, Besir

Crosswinds which stem from on-road flow conditions can deteriorate a ground vehicle's driving performance. In spite of the numerous studies investigating aerodynamics of the ground vehicles in the previous literature, there is still a need for thorough understanding of the underlying flow phenomena related to crosswind sensitivity of the ground vehicles. Therefore, the present study is aimed to investigate characteristics of the flow features around the ground vehicles under steady crosswind conditions within a range of yaw angles 0° ≤ β ≤ 15° using the Ahmed vehicle model with rear slant angles of α = 25° and 35°. Throughout the investigations, flow visualizations using dye injection technique and velocity measurements using particle image velocimetry PIV technique are conducted. The Reynolds number of the flow which is based on the free stream flow velocity U = 200 mm/s and height of the model H = 72 mm is ReH= 1.4 × 104. Results are presented in terms of time-averaged vorticity <ω> contours and streamline <ψ> patterns together with velocity magnitude ((<u>2+<w>2)1/2/U) of the flow fields. Additionally, turbulence quantities such as Reynolds stresses <u'w'>/U2 and turbulent kinetic energy TKE are presented and discussed in details. Results of the present study show that characteristics of the flow features in the near wake region downstream of the Ahmed model are very sensitive to the effects of the crosswind.

Investigation of dose and development time for thin e-beam resist poly(methyl methacrylate) for large area dense nanopattern applications

Göktaş, Oktay; Çakıroğlu, Dilek; Yıldırım, Özal; Göktaş, Nebile Işık

With the advance of nanotechnology, the demand for very dense nanopatterns over large areas continuously increases. Electron beam lithography is one of the main tools to realise this type of nanopattern. In this study we investigate the effect and interrelation of dose and development time for electron beam resist poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) for the realisation of very large area and very dense nanopatterns. For this purpose a pattern consisting of a lattice of holes with radius of 80 nm and lattice constant of 200 nm has been designed, electron beam lithography is realised on a thin resist and a detailed SEM image inspection of the pattern is recorded. Hough transform, a pattern recognition method for the digital images, is applied to SEM images to measure the radii of the holes on the images. Interrelation between dose and development time is investigated. It is found that for a very large area of dense nanopatterns the lithographic process works better for development times shorter than typically used ones.

The Effect of Therapeutic Clowning on Handwashing Technique and Microbial Colonization in Preschool Children

Arıkan, Duygu; Gürarslan Baş, Nazan; Kurudirek, Fatma; Baştopcu, Ayşe; Uslu, Hakan

Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effect of therapeutic clowning on handwashing technique and microbial colonization in preschool children. Design: This randomized controlled trial was conducted using pre-test and post-test experimental and control groups. Methods: The study was conducted between March and June 2016 in two kindergartens in eastern Turkey. The study was completed with a total of 195 students, including 90 students in the experimental group and 105 students in the control group. A questionnaire was used for data collection. This questionnaire included sections about the subjects’ descriptive characteristics and the results of the bacterial cultures of their hand swabs. For the collection of these swabs, the subjects were informed in advance, and samples were collected at predetermined times. The swabs were analyzed to determine the bacterial colonization of the subjects’ hands. Clowns and video activities were used as intervention tools in the study. Findings: In the post-test, the microbial growth was ≤103 in 68.9% and >103 in 31.1% of the subjects in the experimental group. In contrast, the growth was ≤103 in 34.3% and >103 in 65.7% of the control group subjects. The difference in the post-test microbial growths of the two groups was statistically significant (p <.000). Conclusions: The hygienic handwashing technique taught in the therapeutic clowning and videos reduced the bacterial colonization on the preschool children's hands by 50%. Moreover, this method was effective in reducing the growth rate of coliform bacteria that indicate undesirable, poor hygiene of the hands. Clinical Relevance: Considering these results, we recommend that pediatric healthcare professionals use entertaining methods such as those involving clowns to teach and guide children regarding hygienic handwashing techniques.

An investigation of the near-wake flow structure of a cylinder with guiding plates

Ekinci, Firat; Firat, Erhan; Özkan, Göktürk M.; Akilli, Hüseyin; Dancova, P.

In this study, the flow behind a circular cylinder with a pair of outer identical guiding plates was investigated using particle image velocimetry (PIV) for various angular positions of the plates (i.e. α=±70°, ±100°, and ±130°). The gaps between these plates and cylinder are equal and are 0.3D. Experiments were carried out at a subcritical Reynolds (Re=ρ·U∞·D/μ) number of 7500, based on the cylinder diameter (D) and the flow velocity (U∞). The features of the near-wake with and without the guiding plates were interpreted in terms of patterns of time-averaged vorticity and streamlines, time-averaged and fluctuating velocity components. The spectral analysis was also carried out to determine the time-dependent variation of the transverse velocity at given locations in the near-wake. Two-dimensional computations of flow around circular cylinders with and without guiding plates have also been performed to predict the timeaveraged and root-mean-square of force coefficients of the various models. It was seen that the guiding plates at an appropriate angular position can lead to substantial attenuation, or retardation, of the process of large-scale vortex formation in the near-wake, thus can lead to vortex-induced vibration (VIV) suppression without any increase in drag.

Fuzzy rule-based Fine–Kinney risk assessment approach for rail transportation systems

    Gul, Muhammet; Celik, Erkan

Rail transportation is one of the most crucial public transportation types for big and crowded cities. In rail transportation systems, stakeholders face serious issues involved in workshops, stations, lines and their environments, and general office buildings. In order to reach an increased awareness and better occupational health and safety (OHS) management, a new risk assessment approach is proposed in this study. This approach includes a combination of Fine–Kinney method and a fuzzy rule-based expert system. It captures nonlinear causal relationships between Fine–Kinney parameters. Since there is a high level of vagueness involved in the OHS risk assessment data, the rule-based expert system is developed for probability (P), exposure (E), and consequence (C) for evaluating risk score. A case study is carried out in a rail transportation system in Istanbul/Turkey, and a comparison with the classical Fine–Kinney method is discussed. Results of the case study reveal risk clusters and corresponding control measures that should be taken into consideration. The study methodologically contributes to risk assessment in the knowledge, while case study in a real rail transportation system offers an insight into public transport industry in safety improvement.

Antioxidant biomarkers in Gammarus pulex to evaluate the efficiency of electrocoagulation process in landfill leachate treatment

Serdar, Osman; Yildirim, Nuran Cikcikoglu; Tatar, Sule; Yildirim, Numan; Ogedey, Aysenur

The discharge of landfill leachate into the environment without effective treatment poses a serious threat for the aquatic ecosystems. This present study was undertaken to evaluate whether electrocoagulation process is efficient for treatment landfill leachate (LL) or not by using antioxidant biomarkers in Gammarus pulex. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) activities and malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels in G. pulex exposed to untreated, treated, and diluted rates 1/10 and 1/20 in both LL during 24 and 96 h were tested. Physiochemical characteristics of leachate (chemical oxygen demand, electrical conductivity, pH, phosphate, turbidity, NH3, Cl−, and color) were determined pre and post treatment. All physiochemical characteristics of LL decreased after treatment process. GSH-Px and CAT activities and GSH and MDA levels were increased in untreated groups when compared to control (p < 0.05). After treatment by electrocoagulation, MDA and GSH levels and CAT activities were returned to control values. In conclusion, the abilities of LL to stimulate oxidative stress in G. pulex have been proven. The results revealed that antioxidant parameters are useful biomarkers for determining the treatment efficiency of the electrocoagulation process.

Phenotypic differentiation analysis: A case study in hybridizing Çoruh trout (Salmo coruhensis), Rize trout (Salmo rizeensis) and brown trout (Salmo trutta fario)

Kocabaş, Mehmet; Kutluyer, Filiz; Başçinar, Nadir

The aim of this study was to determine and compare the phenotypic variation in Çoruh trout (Salmo coruhensis), Rize trout (Salmo rizeensis), brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) and their native hybrids (S. rizeensis × S. t. fario; S. t. fario × S. coruhensis; S. rizeensis × S. coruhensis). The numbers and diameters of red and black spots were determined on operculum, fins and above and below the lateral line. The results from this study indicate that there were differences in spotting pattern, colour pattern or fin pigmentation traits between S. rizeensis, S. t. fario, S. coruhensis and their hybrids. Consequently, native S. rizeensis, S. t. fario and S. coruhensis were affected by interaction and phenotypic plastic aspects of traits in S. rizeensis were dominant in their hybrids (S. rizeensis × S. t. fario; S. rizeensis × S. coruhensis).

Adiguzel, Ragip; Turan, Nevin; Buldurun, Kenan; Korkoca, Hanifi

Background and Objective: Saccharin and saccharinate (sac) complexes and its anion have critical importance with biological, biochemical and pharmacological properties. The main objective of this study was to synthesize the novel mixed ligand complexes from the complexes [M(Sac)2(H2O)4]·2H2O [M: Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II)] with a second neutral ligand [L:(mmppa): 5-Methyl-4-(4-methylphenylazo)-2H-pyrazole-3-ylamine]. Methodology: The structures of the complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility, FT-IR, mass and electronic spectral studies and thermal analysis. Antimicrobial (antibacterial and anticandidal) activities of the complexes were tested against Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 51299, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Escherichia coli ATCC 35218, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 700603 and Candida albicans ATCC 64548. Results: According to the experimental results, it was determined that in Mn(II), Co(II) and Cd(II) complexes, two coordinated H2O molecules are replaced with two neutral ligands, on the other hand, in Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes, all coordinated H2O molecules are replaced with four neutral ligands. It was established that the second neutral ligand was coordinated to the metal ions via nitrogen atom of-NH2 group in pyrazole ring. In antimicrobial activity, study was determined to occur significant inhibition zones (20-24 mm) against Candida albicans ATCC 64548 strain. Conclusion: As a result, mononuclear and monomeric structure in octahedral geometry including both saccharin and azo dye ligands were synthesized and their characterizations were accomplished. The result of this study shows that novel mixed ligand-saccharinate complexes can be utilized for the development of anticandidal agents.

    F(T, R) theory of gravity

Salti, Mustafa; Korunur, Murat; Acikgoz, Irfan; Pirinccioglu, Nurettin; Binbay, Figen

We mainly focus on the idea that the dynamics of the whole universe may be understood by making use of torsion T and curvature R at the same time. The f(T,R)-gravity can be considered as a fundamental gravitational theory describing the evolution of the universe. The model can produce the unification of the general relativity (GR), teleparallel gravity (TPG), f(R)-gravity and f(T)-gravity theories. For this purpose, the corresponding Lagrangian density is written in terms of an arbitrary function of the torsion and curvature scalars. Furthermore, we use the absence/existence puzzle of relativistic neutron stars and thermodynamical laws as constraining tools for the new proposal.

Arrhythmia detection using deep convolutional neural network with long duration ECG signals

Yıldırım, Özal; Pławiak, Paweł; Tan, Ru-San; Acharya, U. Rajendra

This article presents a new deep learning approach for cardiac arrhythmia (17 classes) detection based on long-duration electrocardiography (ECG) signal analysis. Cardiovascular disease prevention is one of the most important tasks of any health care system as about 50 million people are at risk of heart disease in the world. Although automatic analysis of ECG signal is very popular, current methods are not satisfactory. The goal of our research was to design a new method based on deep learning to efficiently and quickly classify cardiac arrhythmias. Described research are based on 1000 ECG signal fragments from the MIT - BIH Arrhythmia database for one lead (MLII) from 45 persons. Approach based on the analysis of 10-s ECG signal fragments (not a single QRS complex) is applied (on average, 13 times less classifications/analysis). A complete end-to-end structure was designed instead of the hand-crafted feature extraction and selection used in traditional methods. Our main contribution is to design a new 1D-Convolutional Neural Network model (1D-CNN). The proposed method is 1) efficient, 2) fast (real-time classification) 3) non-complex and 4) simple to use (combined feature extraction and selection, and classification in one stage). Deep 1D-CNN achieved a recognition overall accuracy of 17 cardiac arrhythmia disorders (classes) at a level of 91.33% and classification time per single sample of 0.015 s. Compared to the current research, our results are one of the best results to date, and our solution can be implemented in mobile devices and cloud computing.
