- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Investigating forest fire causes through an integrated Bayesian network and geographic information system approach
Konurhan, Zekeriya; Yucesan, Melih; Gul, Muhammet
Forests are among the most critical natural resources worldwide and are essential for a sustainable ecosystem. In recent years, climate change and human activities have increased their impact on forests, and forest fires-especially in summer- have caused significant forest losses globally. This paper integrates Bayesian Network (BN) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to pinpoint the possible causes of forest fires and analyze their complex interactions. The study used data from 1465 fires between 2017 and 2022 in Muğla province in southwestern Türkiye. Within the scope of the study, 11 variables were chosen, such as elevation, slope, aspect, wind speed, population density, and road network, to build a BN model that combines physical and human geographical features. These variables overlapped using the pairwise intersect tool from ArcGIS Pro during the BN model setup, and probability values were calculated. The overall probability of fire in the BN model was determined to be 0.81, with probabilities ranging from 0.81 to 0.56 in low-altitude, moderately sloped, and south-facing areas. Scenario analyses examined fire risk under different conditions, highlighting the most influential variables for fire prevention efforts. The study identified fire-prone areas as spatial data, revealing that densely forested coastal and certain inland regions are at higher risk, whereas bare high-altitude areas with steep slopes pose lower risk. The BN model can be further enhanced by incorporating additional variables, making it a valuable tool for future fire risk assessment and mitigation strategies research.

Alp, Ahmet; Akyüz, Adil; Gündüz, Fatih; Demirol, Ferhat; Çoban, Mehmet Zülfü; Yüksel, Fahrettin; Yerli, Sedat Vahdet
Luciobarbus esocinus (mangar), a critically endangered mega-fish species (≤ 140 kg) endemic to the Euphrates and Tigris river systems, faces severe threats due to habitat fragmentation. To assess its spatial ecology in the Keban Reservoir, 30 individuals were acoustically tagged and monitored for 218–437 days using 18 receivers deployed in the reservoir. The tagged fish exhibited low site fidelity, with station residency indices (RI) ranging from 0.00 to 0.46 and detection periods lasting 59–153 days. Depth and temperature data (115,318 and 112,789 records, respectively) revealed seasonal habitat shifts: individuals occupied deeper waters in winter (mean 10.1 m), shallower depths in spring (4.4 m) and summer (3.8 m), and tolerated temperatures of 7.4°C–28.4°C. Although depth use was weakly correlated with temperature, trends indicated shallower occupancy during warmer periods. Home range analyses showed a maximum linear home range (LHR) of 36.5 km and the areal home range estimated via minimum convex polygon (MCP) was 6422.8 ha. In addition, kernel density (KD) analysis revealed the 95% KD area was 2877.0 ha, the 75% KD area was 67.7 ha and the 50% KD area was 33.8 ha. Seasonal migrations spanned 25–30 km upstream/downstream from release sites, particularly toward tributaries in spring. Around the Keban Reservoir, 14 hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) present and most of these HPP are not designed suitable fish passages. Urgent conservation measures are needed, including Fish Conservation Zones in critical habitats and connectivity restoration via functional fishways, to safeguard this imperilled species in fragmented river-reservoir ecosystems.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ3The effect of addition of powder jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) fruit at different rates into mixed diets on antioxidant and some blood parameters of broiler chickens*
Arslan, S.; Parlak Ak, T.; Guler Ekmen, E.; Karakoc, Ş.; Ciftci, M.
This study was conducted to determine the effects of addition of jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) fruit at different rates into the mixed feed on intestinal morphology, antioxidant and some blood parameters of broiler chickens. A total of 160 male broiler (initial body weights were determined as 209.25±2.17, 209.18±2.13, 209.18±1.74 and 209.20±2.58, respectively) chickens (Ross-308), including 40 in each group, were used in the study. The groups were divided into 4 sub-groups, each of which include 10 broiler chickens. The study groups were the control group (the group without jujube fruit), the H-0.5% group (the group with 0.5% jujube fruit), the H-1 group (the group with 1% jujube fruit), and the H-2 group (the group with 2% jujube fruit). At the end of the experiment (42nd day), the control group had the highest levels of blood glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, very low density lipoprotein cholesterol, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and uric acid, and the lowest level of creatine (P<0.05). While the lowest malondialdehyde level was detected in the H-2 group (P<0.001), the highest glutathione peroxidase (P<0.01) and catalase (P<0.05) levels were observed in the H-1 and H-2 groups. The control group also had the lowest values for villus height and crypt depth and the highest values for villus height/crypt depth (P<0.001). As a result, it was concluded that jujube fruit, which is mainly used for its antioxidant properties, can be used in poultry compound feeds especially at the level of 1% due to its positive effects on antioxidant and blood parameters and intestinal morphology.

Özçiçek, Esin; Kocabaş, Filiz Kutluyer; Kocabaş, Mehmet; Yilmaz, Ökkeş
Abstract: As an important challenge restricting hatchery production, gamete quality and subsequent larvae and juvenile are influenced by broodstock nutritional status (i.e., protein, essential amino acids, fatty acid profile and minerals). Hence, the fatty acid (FA) profiles of muscle and gametes in threatened Abant trout (Salmo abanticus) from wild was elucidated and quantitated using the gas chromatography. Our results indicated that the saturated fatty acids (SFAs) in muscle and sperm (38.00 and 60.98%) of S. abanticus occurred in higher quantities than unsaturated fatty acids. The egg of S. abanticus in the wild is characterized by high (mostly n-6 HUFA, 33.59%). Tricosanoic acid (C23:0) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6 n-3) were not determined in sperm of S. abanticus. Overall, the current study provides FA composition in the reproduction cells and muscle of mature S. abanticus and the gametes and muscle had similar general FA profiles with the dominance of C18:1 n-9 (Oleic acid), C16:0 (Palmitic acid), C4:0 (Butyric acid), C18:2 n-6 (Linoleic acid, LA) and C20:5 n-3 (Eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA).

Altı, Aziz
Elephants have always been a focus of attention for humanity, thanks to both their physical structure and their potential strength. This attractive effect of elephants also made itself felt in the Ottoman Empire, and elephants took their place in Ottoman property from the early periods of the state. The elephants sent from the “Eastern” world to the Ottoman sultans within the scope of diplomatic relations now became permanent residents of the state. In fact, within the Ottoman Empire, positions such as chief elephant keeper and filbân (elephant caretaker) were created to care for and train elephants. The filbâns, whose numbers changed from time to time, worked under Mîrâhûr in the Ottoman state organization. The filbâns, who were paid salaries as ulufe, also routinely received allowances for the needs of the elephants. Shelters were provided for elephants in suitable areas in Istanbul. Elephants were not only found in Istanbul, but also in provincial cities, especially in Edirne. Elephants, who contributed to the authority and charismatic personality of the Sultan, were kept in the Ottoman Empire to serve different purposes. As a matter of fact, elephants appeared as important figures in the reception of ambassadors, festivals, wars and diplomatic relations between states. In this context, the subjects of this study were the actions that took place in the social, military and political life of the Ottoman Empire.

Dietarian identity reflects an individual’s cognitive, emotional, and behavioral orientation toward the consumption or avoidance of animal-based foods, including red meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy. This study aimed to adapt and validate the Dietarian Identity Questionnaire (DIQ) for Turkish-speaking populations by establishing its cultural and linguistic suitability and examining dietarian identity profiles among different dietary patterns. The DIQ was adapted into Turkish and administered via a webbased survey to 487 Turkish-speaking adults (Mean age=28.9±10.7 years; 34.7% male, 64.1% female, and 1.2% non-binary). Participants were categorized as omnivores, vegetarians, or vegans based on self-reported dietary exclusions. Structural validity was assessed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis, while internal consistency, composite reliability, and convergent and discriminant validity were evaluated through Cronbach’s alpha and average variance extracted. Group differences across dietary identity profiles were examined using ANOVA, and interrelationships among the DIQ-Turkish (DIQ-T) subscales were explored through Pearson correlation analysis. The results indicated that the eight-factor DIQ-T demonstrated a strong model fit (χ2 (465) =1841.45, p<0.001, CFI=0.924, TLI=0.914, RMSEA=0.078, SRMR=0.050), confirming its structural validity. Reliability analysis indicated high internal consistency across all subscales, and significant differences were observed between omnivores and vegan/vegetarian groups across multiple dimensions (p<0.001), highlighting distinct psychological and motivational patterns associated with dietarian identity. These findings support DIQ-T as a valid and reliable instrument for assessing dietarian identity, providing a valuable tool for researchers and health professionals investigating dietary behaviors and their potential implications for public health and nutrition interventions.

Korkmaz, Kübranur; Aygören, Caner; Düzova, Halil
Background: This study investigated the effects of gender’s foot arch structure (normal arch vs. pes planus) on aerobic and anaerobic performance in pubertal karate athletes. Method: Children with chronic cardiovascular and musculoskeletal diseases were excluded from the study. Participants included boys with normal foot arches (B-nfa, n = 7), boys with pes planus (B-pp, n = 11), girls with normal foot arches (G-nfa, n = 16), and girls with pes planus (G-pp, n = 11). Aerobic capacity was evaluated using the 6-Minute Walk Test, while anaerobic performance was assessed through the Vertical Jump Test and sprint tests (10 m and 30 m). The height of the foot arch was measured using the Navicular Drop test. Nonparametric data were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis test and Dunn's post-hoc test to identify significant differences. Parametric data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test. Pearson's test was used for parametric correlation, while Spearman's test was used for nonparametric correlation. The significance threshold was set at p < 0.05. Results: Individuals in the G-nfa group exhibited higher anaerobic power than those in the G-pp group (p = 0.0452). There was a strong negative correlation between arch pes planus and Spear equations (r = 0.63, p = 0.0004). B-nfa participants performed faster than both B-pp (p = 0.0015) and G-pp (p = 0.0015). The G-nfa completed the 10 m sprint test faster than both B-pp and G-pp (p = 0.0052). B-nfa outperformed G-pp in the 30 m sprint (p = 0.036) and covered greater distances in the six-minute walk test compared to B-pp (p = 0.034) and G-pp (p = 0.002). Conclusion: In this study, we concluded that flat feet do not negatively affect the development of aerobic capacity in prepubertal children undergoing professional karate training. Still, they may significantly impact the growth of anaerobic power.

Alişer, Ahmet Bedrettin; Aydin, Rahmi; Serdar, Osman
The biochemical reactions of zebra mussels Dreissena polymorpha (Pallas, 1771) exposed to different concentrations of cadmium (Cd) in the acute period (24 and 96 hours after treatment) were studied. Four variants of experimental treatment were examined: 0 μg/L Cd (control), 10 μg/L Cd, 20 μg/L Cd and 40 μg/L Cd. Changes in the enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione (GSH) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels were determined using ELISA kits. In D. polymorpha exposed to the three experimental concentrations of cadmium, there was a statistically significant decrease (p<0.05) in SOD enzyme activity with increasing concentration or exposure times. No change was observed in CAT enzyme activity with increasing concentrations. The decrease in the activity depending on the exposure times was not statistically significant (p>0.05). As for GPx enzyme activity, a significant increase was detected after Cd application compared to the control (p<0.05). TBARS and GSH levels increased significantly in all Cd application groups compared to the control at 24 and 96 hours. The effects of different concentrations of Cd on D. polymorpha in the acute period were associated with changes in SOD, CAT, GPx enzyme activities. TBARS and GSH levels were effective parameters in determining the oxidative damage caused by Cd.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Self-Compassion Around the World: Measurement Invariance of the Short Form of the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS-SF) Across 65 Nations, 40 Languages, Gender Identities, and Age Groups

Objectives: The 12-item Self-Compassion Scale–Short Form (SCS–SF) is a widely used instrument for the assessment of self-compassion. To date, there have been few examinations of this instrument’s psychometric properties, particularly across nations and languages. Therefore, we used data from the Body Image in Nature Survey (BINS) to assess measurement invariance of the SCS–SF across nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups. Methods: Participants (N = 56,968) from 65 nations completed the SCS–SF in 40 languages. Using these data, we tested various hypothesised models of the SCS–SF in the total sample and, using multi-group confirmatory factor analysis, tested for invariance of the optimal model across national groups, languages, gender identities, and age groups. Results: In the total dataset, we found that an 11-item, 2-factor model (i.e., SCS-11) provided best fit to the data, with the two factors tapping distinct constructs of compassionate and uncompassionate self-responding. The SCS-11 was found to be partially scalar invariant across national groups and languages, and fully scalar invariant across gender identities and age groups. There was wide variation in latent means for the two factors, particularly across national groups and languages. Further analyses showed negligible associations between the two factors and sociodemographic variables, including marital status, financial security, and urbanicity. Conclusions: Our results suggest that it may be possible to derive a stable 2-factor model of the SCS–SF for use in cross-cultural research, but also highlight the likelihood of cross-national and cross-linguistic variations in the way that self-compassion is understood.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1New comparative approach to multi-level thresholding: chaotically initialized adaptive meta-heuristic optimization methods
Serbet, Fatmanur; Kaya, Turgay
One method aimed at enhancing the performance of meta-heuristic optimization techniques is the incorporation of chaotic systems. Instead of irregular distributions in the search space, chaotic distributions are employed in the initial population of optimization algorithms to improve the efficiency of the search process. This approach enables search agents distributed in a chaotic manner to effectively explore the search space. The initial populations of both the well-established PSO algorithm and the enhanced WSO algorithm, which incorporates advanced search techniques, are distributed in the search space according to the characteristics of Logistic, Chebyshev, Circle, Sine, and Piecewise chaotic maps in this study. The original PSO and WSO algorithms, as well as the resulting chaotically initialized PSO and chaotically initialized WSO algorithms, were tested using 23 benchmark functions. Subsequently, the Otsu method was integrated into the tested optimization algorithms to obtain multi-level thresholding values. These algorithms were applied to five different test images with a manually determined number of thresholds. The results obtained were presented in the study and evaluated using statistical tests.

Phlomis pungens var. hirta Velen has been used by local people for food and to treat diseases but there are limited number of investigations in literature about this plant and cyto/genotoxicity analyses have not been done before. Hence, this study aimed to find out cell-protective activity and DNA damage prevention ability of P. pungens var. hirta by MTS, micronucleus, 8-OHdG and somatic mutation recombination tests (SMART). In addition, liquid chromatography, antioxidant/antibacterial activity analyses and in silico biological activity profiling were performed. The healthy lymphocyte cell growth was supported by the plant extracts and none of the extracts was genotoxic. 8-OHdG test showed that methanolic and ethanolic extracts of the plant were able to decrease the oxidative DNA damage. According to the SMART results, extracts could suppress the genotoxic effects of an important environmental pollutant, H2O2. Rutin hydrate and quercetin were found in highest concentrations and the extracts could be characterized as antioxidant/antibacterial. In silico analysis also showed that the major compounds of this plant can be considered as chemoprotective. This is the first study that assessed the cell protective activity and DNA damage prevention capacity of P. pungens var. hirta, which should be regarded as a potential source for nutritional supplements and therapeutic products.

Pekdemir, Mustafa Ersin; Yılmaz, Demet; Selçuk Pekdemir, Sibel; Taşgın, Yahya; Ekmen, Busenur
In this study, structural, thermal and radiation shielding properties of Polylactic acid (PLA)/polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs)/Tungsten Carbide (WC) nanocomposite films were investigated. PHA/PLA/WC composite films were prepared by using different amounts of WC (5%, 10%, 18%, 28%). Characterization of the composite films was carried out by Attenuated Total Reflection Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-IR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The linear and mass attenuation coefficients (LAC and MAC), mean free path (MFP), Half-Value Layer (HVL), Tenth Value Layer (TVL), effective atomic numbers (Zeff), and effective electron densities (Nel) of the synthesized composite films were experimentally measured from 53.16 to 383.85 keV. Also, the neutron equivalent dose rates for the prepared film samples were determined. Exposure buildup factor (EBF) and fast neutron removal cross section (ΣR) were theoretically calculated. The particle shielding characteristics of the composite films were evaluated. The MFP values at 356.01 keV are 8.211 cm, 7.772 cm, 7.360 cm, 6.710 cm and 5.942 cm for PLA/PHA, PLA/PHA/5%WC, PLA/PHA/10%WC, PLA/PHA/18%WC and PLA/PHA/28%WC, respectively. It was observed that an increase in WC content enhances the gamma shielding abilities in PHA/PLA films. The results revealed that PHA/PLA/WC composite materials can be used as protective coating materials.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1A novel post-processing approach for improving minimum nonlinearity in S-boxes: A case study based on 2D hyper chaotic Schaffer transformation map
Aydın, Yılmaz; Garipcan, Ali Murat; Özkaynak, Fatih
Substitution boxes (s-boxes), providing nonlinearity in block cipher algorithms, constitute a fundamental security layer against linear and differential cryptanalysis attacks. In this study, an innovative s-box generation method is proposed by integrating a 2D hyper-chaotic Schaffer map (SM) with biomolecular DNA-based encoding techniques. Furthermore, to enhance the security of s-box structures, a novel post-processing algorithm is developed, aiming to simultaneously optimize both the average (NLavg) and minimum (NLmin) nonlinearity levels by targeting linear components. Unlike traditional meta-heuristic methods, the proposed algorithm avoids random exploration across large search spaces, instead identifying dominant linear components through Walsh spectrum analysis and applying targeted permutation operations to suppress their effects. This strategy not only increases the NLavg value but also balances the contribution of each Boolean function to security, thereby establishing a homogeneous and consistent security structure across all input–output combinations. Comparative experimental analyses with existing methods demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms prior techniques in terms of both cryptographic security metrics and computational efficiency. In this respect, the study presents an advanced s-box design framework, characterized by high nonlinearity and a balanced spectral distribution, suitable for integration into modern block cipher systems.

Background: Respiratory efficiency is considered important in karate due to its role in sustaining muscular performance during high-intensity actions. This study examined the association between pulmonary function and isometric muscle strength in national-level karate athletes. Methods: A total of 23 elite karate athletes (mean age: 23.0 ± 2.3 (mean ± SD) years) participated in the study. Pulmonary function was assessed using a digital spirometer, while isometric handgrip, lower back, and leg strength were measured using a dynamometer. The correlation between pulmonary function and isometric strength was analyzed, and linear regression was employed to examine the predictive capacity of pulmonary parameters for muscle strength. Results: The results revealed significant correlations, ranging from large to very large, between pulmonary function and isometric muscle strength, with correlation coefficients from 0.639 to 0.812 (p < 0.01). Pulmonary function was strongly associated with isometric strength, accounting for 27% to 67% of the variance (p < 0.05). Multiple regression analysis revealed that pulmonary function parameters accounted for 71% of the variance in handgrip strength, 47% in leg strength, and 71% in back strength (p < 0.05). Conclusions: These findings highlight the strong associations between pulmonary function and isometric muscle strength in elite karate athletes. The results emphasize the importance of pulmonary health and respiratory muscle function in athletic performance, particularly for sports requiring high-intensity, dynamic movements like karate. Future longitudinal studies are needed to explore the mechanisms underlying the association and potential implications, and for training and performance optimization.

Yayla, Nihal; Albayrak, M.Gökhan; Güler, Ömer; Baykal, Duygu Sen; Alkarrani, Hessa; ALMisned, Ghada; Zakaly, Hesham M.H.; Tekin, H.O.
This study explores the structural, mechanical, and radiation shielding properties of 316L stainless steel composites reinforced with varying weight percentages of Pr2O3. The aim is to enhance radiation attenuation capabilities while maintaining structural integrity for nuclear applications. The composites were fabricated using the mechanical alloying method, followed by detailed characterization through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Key radiation shielding parameters, including mass attenuation coefficient, linear attenuation coefficient, half-value layer, and effective atomic number, and transmission factor values were analysed using theoretical and computational models. Additionally, elastic modulus calculations were performed to assess mechanical properties. The results indicate that incorporating Pr2O3 significantly enhances shielding performance. The 316L-SS%20Pr2O3 composite exhibited the highest mass and linear attenuation coefficients values, with a notable reduction in half value layer values compared to the unreinforced 316L stainless steel. At lower photon energies, effective atomic number improved by 39.3 % for the 316L-SS%20Pr2O3 sample, while neutron shielding efficiency also increased. However, the elastic modulus decreased with higher Pr2O3 content, reflecting a trade-off between mechanical stiffness and radiation shielding efficiency. The findings demonstrate that 316L-SS%20Pr2O3 is a promising material for applications requiring superior radiation shielding, particularly in environments where mechanical load is secondary.

The fruits harvested at different maturity stages were stored at 0 ± 0.5 °C and 90 ± 5 RH in MAP and control conditions for 42 d and changes in quality, physiological and biochemical parameters were evaluated. Results: The lowest value was recorded in the early maturity (M-1) + MAP group for weight loss. Respiration rate decreased with advancing maturity, MAP treatments slowed down this process. Oxygen consumption and CO₂ production changed according to maturity level, MAP applications balanced gas exchange. MAP maintained brightness and color intensity of the fruit better. It also slowed down the firmness loss. The highest soluble solid content (SSC) was determined in the late maturity (M-3) + MAP group. Titratable acidity (TA) showed lower increase in MAP treatments. MAP significantly reduced the losses of vitamin C. Total phenolic, total flavonoids and antioxidant activity decreased during storage, while MAP treatments limited this decrease. Conclusions: The findings revealed that packaging jujube fruit with MAP, especially in early and mid-maturity stages, better preserves its quality parameters. Accordingly, MAP applications appropriate to the ripeness stage are recommended as an effective strategy to extend the fresh consumption period of jujube fruit and preserve its bioactive compounds.

Artuğer, Fırat
With today's developing technologies, the need for new image encryption algorithms to encrypt images is inevitable. In this study, an innovative image encryption algorithm is proposed. The proposed algorithm first XORs each layer of the image with a unique and strong new key. Each layer is then subjected to a random permutation process. Each of the encrypted layers obtained here is finally passed through a new s-box structure with a high nonlinearity value. After these processes, all layers are combined to obtain an encrypted image. Thus, XOR and s-box confusion meet the criteria, while random permutation meets the diffusion criteria. In this study, both key and s-box structures were originally obtained with a chaotic Gaussian map. The outputs of the chaotic map were converted into bit sequences and five different sequences with a length of 1 million were obtained. All these arrays have successfully passed all NIST SP 800-22 tests. On the other hand, the proposed s-box structures surpassed many studies with nonlinearity values of 108, 108.5, and 108.75. The images were successfully encrypted with the proposed algorithm, and the encrypted images successfully completed tests such as NPCR-UACI, information entropy, histogram analysis, and correlation analysis. It is thought that this study will make many contributions to the fields of s-box development, random number generation, and image encryption.
