Glacial landforms in the southwestern part of the Anatolian Peninsula are found at lower elevations than the rest, suggesting that glaciers were present during the Late Pleistocene. Karadağ, located west of the Western Taurus Mountains, provides evidence of the climatic conditions that facilitated this extensive glaciation. It is characterized by numerous peaks exceeding 2300 m above sea level (asl), with the highest peak reaching 2418 m, making it the region's largest glaciation area. This high mountain mass is composed mainly of limestone and dolomite. This study focuses on the glacial landforms in Karadağ to reconstruct the Late Pleistocene glacial chronology and palaeoclimate of the Western Taurus Mountains. We employed detailed UAV photogrammetry, extensive fieldwork and mapping, surface exposure dating with cosmogenic 36Cl, meteorological measurements, palaeoglacier reconstruction, and palaeo-equilibrium line altitude (pELA) calculations. Karadağ, a topographic barrier to humid air masses from the Mediterranean Sea, ranks as the second wettest area in the Western Taurus Mountains. At a meteorological station we installed in Karadağ, an annual precipitation of 1700 mm or more was recorded, highlighting its significant precipitation. In Karadağ, we have identified two glacial valleys with a maximum length of 4.5 km and six cirques. The glaciers reached their maximum extent around 22.4 ± 2.8 ka during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), facilitated by the lowering of the pELA to 2090 m. During the LGM, the glaciers covered an area of approximately 3.5 km2 and reached a maximum thickness of about 140 m. Sample TRKR 10 at 2015 m probably belongs to the LGM period. Although a single sample does not conclude definitive conclusions, the presence of the moraine at its highest position indicates the maximum thickness of the glacier. Following the LGM, two more significant glacier advances occurred during the Lateglacial (15.5 ± 2.7 ka) and the Younger Dryas (12.4 ± 1.1 ka). During the late Pleistocene glaciations, and especially during the LGM, Karadağ probably received more precipitation than today, leading to the formation of glaciers at relatively lower elevations than on the Anatolian Peninsula.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1A new hybrid mobile CNN approach for crosswalk recognition in autonomous vehicles
Doğan, Gürkan; Ergen, Burhan
While automobile transportation is increasing worldwide, it also negatively affects the safety of road users. Along with the neglect of traffic rules, pedestrians account for 22% of all highway traffic deaths. Millions of pedestrians suffer non-fatal injuries from these accidents. Most of these injuries and deaths occur at crosswalks, where the highway and pedestrians intersect. In this study, deep learning-based a new hybrid mobile CNN approaches are proposed to reduce injuries and deaths by automatically recognizing of crosswalks in autonomous vehicles. The first of these proposed approaches is the HMCNet approach, which is a hybrid model in which the MobileNetv3 and MNasNet CNN models are used together. This model achieves approximately 2% more accuracy than the peak performance of the lean used MobileNetv3 and MNasNet models. Another proposed approach is the FHMCNet approach, which increases the success of the HMCNet approach. In the FHMCNet approach, LSVC feature selection method and SVM classification method are used in addition to HMCNet. This approach increased the classification success of HMCNet by more than approximately 2%. Finally, the proposed FHMCNet offered approximately 3% more classification accuracy than state-of-the-art methods in the literature.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1Characteristics of Hozat apricot seed oil as a new source of oilseed
Aydin, Çağlar Mert
There has been an increase in apricot consumption due to its high bioactive and fiber content. However, the seed, inside part of the fruit, is considered as a food waste. In this study, potential usage of apricot seeds (bitter and sweet), that were cultivated in Hozat region- Tunceli, as an alternative oil source was evaluated. No comprehensive research has been undertaken to assess the seeds as an oil source before. In assessing its suitability for consumption, proximate composition of seed and physicochemical properties of the seeds’ oil had been determined. The proximate composition included the content of protein, ash, moisture, oil and the acidity as pH, in addition; iodine value, refractive index, nutritional quality, total phenolic content, antioxidant content, fatty acid composition and rheological properties of the oil were determined. Also, the effect of variety on them was examined. Overall, oil content was found to be the major component of the seed, thus the seed is good enough to be used as an oil source. Five different fatty acids were identified in the oil, that produced from the seed. These were palmitic, heptadecanoic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic acid. The oil had a refractive index between 1.4617 and 1.4628, iodine value between 100.47 and 102.11 gms, total phenolic content between 0.83 and 1.29 mg GAE g−1 oil, antioxidant activity between 11.21 and 11.60 mg TE g−1 oil for DPPH assay and 7.92–8.20 mg TE g−1 oil for ABTS assay, and apparent viscosity of 0.04 Pa.s. Moreover, viscous flow tests showed that the oil has a Newtonian flow behavior, and the nutritional indexes, that include unsaturated, atherogenicity, thrombogenicity and hypocholesterolemic/ hypercholesterolemic ratio, indicated that the oil is good enough for consumption as an oil source. The variety was found to have a significant effect on total phenolic content, antioxidant activity and refractive index of the oil, that was produced from apricot seed.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ2Zr and V-doped effect on Martensitic transformations and magnetic properties of NiMnIn shape memory alloy
Taşgın, Yahya; Kanca, M. Sait; Kök, Mediha; Öner, Ecem Özen; Güler, Ömer
In this study, the elements vanadium (V) and zirconium (Zr) were doped separately as a fourth element to the ternary NiMnIn Heusler magnetic shape memory alloy and the alloys were produced as ingots by arc-melting method. The shape memory properties, microstructures, magnetic and microstructural changes of these new alloys were investigated in detail. The vanadium (V) and zirconium (Zr) elements doped into the alloy caused a decrease in the transformation temperature values of the alloy, but did not cause a significant change in its magnetic properties. The master sample, which has low hysteresis, undergoes a phase transition from the martensite phase to the austenite phase due to an increase in the nucleation of austenite phases at the twinning boundaries. Here, the vanadium and zirconium doping of the alloy caused an increase in the strength and ductility values of the alloy and this caused the formation of the second phase. Due to the increase of this phase formation in the alloy, it can be said that there is a slight decrease in the shape retention of the alloy.

A new species, Mattiastrum pulumurense, has been described from Tunceli in eastern Türkiye. It is generally distinguished from other species (except M. racemosum var. scabridum) by a sparsely hairy or glabrescent above-ground part. It is most similar morphologically to M. longipes, M. calycinum, and Paracaryum hedgei (P. hedgei is potentially a member of the genus Mattiastrum). However, it differs from M. longipes and M. calycinum by its 3–3.5-mm-long and linear lanceolate scales, 2.5–4.5-mm-long anthers, and 10–15-mm-long styles; it differs from Paracaryum hedgei by its 3–3.5-mm-long scales, 2.5–4.5-mm-long anthers. In addition, this new species differs from M. racemosum var. scabridum by having 3–3.5-mm-long scales and no scale appendages. A description of the new species, an illustration, a comparative Table of morphological characters, detailed photographs, and a distribution map of the new species together with adjacent species were provided. In addition, the evolutionary relationships of these species were calculated using both Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood analyses based on the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) and combined chloroplast data set (rps16 and trnL genes, trnL-trnF intergenic spacer). According to the phylogeny-based combined chloroplast data set, both populations of Mattiastrum pulumurense generate a monophyletic clade and are closely related to M. longipes, P. hedgei, and M. calycinum. According to ITS-based phylogeny, Mattiastrum pulumurense is closely related to Rindera tetraspis, which is seen in the paraphyletic and nested genera Mattiastrum-Paracaryum-Rindera.

- BildiriAçık Erişim2024A New Hybrid CNN Model for Abnormal Behaviour Detection in Smart Campus
Yilmazer, Merve; Karakose, Mehmet; Ay, Berhan Turku
Security and monitoring systems are provided through video cameras in public places such as universities, hospitals, cinemas and theater halls. In smart campuses created by the integration of various sensors and digital technologies, there are many video cameras indoors and outdoors in the campus areas to ensure the safety of students, academics, administrators and visitors. Examining the images recorded with these video cameras in terms of security and detecting abnormal behaviours requires a long time and effort. In this study, a new hybrid convolutional neural network (CNN) model is proposed to detect abnormal behaviors occurring in smart campus areas. In the proposed method, firstly, the features of the UTI public dataset, which includes various student behaviors, are extracted with the hybrid use of InceptionV3 and MobileNetV2 deep transfer learning models. The extracted features of the images were combined and classified by converting them into a single feature vector. 6 different behavior classes, 3 of which are normal and 3 of which are abnormal, have been classified and detected with 92.7 % accuracy. Experimental results show that the proposed method for abnormal behavior detection produces more efficient results than other methods in terms of feature extraction, accuracy and computational costs.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ2Hysteresis gap-shrinking and structural effects of minor Al and Ti modifications on binary CuAl-based high-temperature shape memory alloys
Karaduman, Oktay; Özkul, İskender; Aksu Canbay, Canan
Cu-based shape memory alloys (SMAs), except for exhibiting shape recovery, superelasticity, and high damping, are desirable because these smart materials have higher electrical and thermal conductivity and much lower prices than NiTi SMAs. However, they also have some downsides in mechanical strength and brittleness (mostly stemming from their coarse grain structure) and thermal instability. Therefore, adding some grain refining elements to these SMAs to improve their shape memory effect (SME), and thermal, structural, and mechanical properties is a widespread and simple way that significantly affects their martensitic phase transitions, structure, and mechanical properties. One of these grain-refining elements is titanium. Its thermal conductivity is lower than those of Cu and Al elements and has a low solubility in Cu-matrix. Besides the effects of small Al variations, the use of minor amounts of titanium in binary CuAl-base alloys can show impressive effects on all characteristics of these shape memory alloys, such as shape memory effect properties, martensitic transformation kinetics parameters, and microstructural features. In this research work, CuAlTi ternary high-temperature shape memory alloys (HTSMAs) with new compositions were produced by the arc melting method without a complicating use of Mn or Ni components in usual ternary CuAlMn and CuAlNi shape memory alloys. Thermal analyses of the prepared samples of the alloys were investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) measurements. In contrast, x-ray diffraction (XRD) test results and optical micrographs were used for analyzing the structure of the alloy samples. The effect of different amounts of low soluble and grain refining Ti element on the binary CuAl alloy system was investigated.

Carvedilol is a beta–blocker. Beta–blockers affect the heart and circulation. carvedilol is used to treat heart failure and hypertension. Although this substance has effects in humans and some animals, its effect on the physiological and antioxidant status of daphnids is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of carvedilol doses (0, 0.125, 0.45 and 0.90 mg·L-1) on physiological activities (heart rate, postabdominal paw activity and thoracic limb movements) and oxidative stress. In Daphnia magna; malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), total glutathione (GSH) and glutathione S transferase (GST) markers were examined. The activity of physiological parameters in D. magna exposed to all carvedilol concentrations was found to be lower than in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.01). Application of carvedilol to D. magna resulted in lower GSH content in all groups throughout the experimental period. MDA, SOD, CAT and GST activity were improved. These findings indicate that carvedilol causes physiological and biochemical changes in D. magna. Daphnia species have great potential to provide valuable insights into the mechanisms of human medicine. More comprehensive research is needed on this subject.

On February 6, 2023, two catastrophic earthquakes occurred on the East Anatolian Fault. The earthquakes had magnitudes of Mw = 7.7 and 7.6 and struck Kahramanmaraş-Pazarclk and Kahramanmaraş-Elbistan, respectively. The Kahramanmaraş-Pazarclk earthquake was triggered at 04:17 local time on the Dead Sea Fault (a branch of the East Anatolian Fault). The last earthquake on the addressed fault occurred about 500 years ago. The recorded peak ground acceleration (PGA) at the Pazarclk station reached 2.05g. In addition, the Pazarclk earthquake triggered two independent earthquakes, the Nurdaǧl and Islahiye earthquakes, which occurred 10 min later than the Pazarclk earthquake. However, the last earthquake, with its epicenter in Kahramanmaraş-Elbistan, struck at 13:24 local time. The recorded PGA for the Elbistan earthquake is 0.68g. This study aims to present the fault rupture mechanism of the February 6, 2023, Kahramanmaraş earthquakes, earthquake characteristics, and to evaluate the performance of masonry dwellings during the Kahramanmaraş earthquake doublet, which affected 10 provinces and numerous towns and villages. This paper also aims to illustrate the damage and failure mechanisms of the masonry dwellings, despite unexpectedly high accelerations that exceeded the design spectrum in the field, specifically in Kahramanmaraş, Gaziantep, Hatay, and Malatya, according to the current earthquake code in use.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ2Titanium alloys: A closer-look at mechanical, gamma-ray, neutron, and transmission properties of different grade alloys through MCNPcode application
ALMisned, Ghada; Guler, Omer; Sen Baykal, Duygu; Kilic, G.; Tekin, H.O.
Titanium alloys play a vital role in optimizing the effectiveness and security of nuclear reactors, strengthening structural durability, and facilitating the effective handling of nuclear waste. The aim of this study is to investigate the gamma-ray, neutron, and transmission properties of four common titanium alloys through the examination of the deposited energy amount in the liquid sodium coolant material, in relation to the mechanical properties of these alloys. MCNP (version 6.3) is utilized for designing the titanium pipes. Next, the pipes were re-designed considering the elemental mass fractions and densities of the investigated titanium alloys. Grade 26 sample is reported with the highest values of mass attenuation coefficients and the lowest HVL values among those investigated alloys. Grade 26 is reported to have the lowest TF value, whereas Grade 12 demonstrated the highest TF value. The highest Effective Removal Cross Section (ΣR, 1/cm) value against fast neutrons is reported for Grade 26. The utilization of Grade 26 sample as pipe material resulted in the lowest deposited energy amount (MeV/g) and subsequent lowest contamination in the coolant material. Out of the alloys that were chosen for analysis, it has been determined that Grade 26 exhibits the highest level of strength. It can be concluded that the Grade 26 alloy exhibits desirable characteristics for applications in nuclear technologies that require superior gamma-ray and neutron absorption properties, as well as exceptional mechanical properties. Nevertheless, it is essential to emphasize the importance for ongoing studies to enhance the existing material properties of Grade 26, with the aim of achieving improved safety and efficacy in nuclear applications.

Erten, Fusun; Ozdemir, Oguzhan; Tokmak, Muhammed; Durmus, Ali Said; Ozercan, Ibrahim Hanifi; Morde, Abhijeet; Padigaru, Muralidhara; Sahin, Kazim
The study tested new oral plant-based formulations (F) on rats with monosodium iodoacetate (MIA)-induced osteoarthritis, measuring inflammation, antioxidant levels, paw size, stride, and analyzing knee joint images. Fifty-six female Sprague Dawley rats were allocated into 8 groups: (1) Control, (2) MIA (OA induced with MIA), (3) MIA + F1 [curcuminoids+gingerols+acetyl-11-keto-β boswellic acid (AKBA)], (4) MIA + F2 (curcuminoids+Withania glycosides+AKBA), (5) MIA + F3 (curcuminoids+total withanolides+AKBA), (6) MIA + F4 (curcuminoids, AKBA), (7) MIA + UCII (type II collagen), and (8) MIA + GCHON (Glucosamine Chondroitin). Treatments F1 to F4 reduced right joint diameter and improved stride length and paw area in OA rats. Despite improvements with treatments F1 to F4, there was no significant difference between these groups (p >.05). In OA animals, F1 to F4 treatments decreased MDA levels and increased antioxidant enzymes activities (p <.001). This was done by reducing levels of inflammatory markers and enzymes like IL-1β, IL-6, MMP-8, TNF-α, CRP, COMP, and LOX-5, while increasing the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. In conclusion, these plant-based treatments significantly reduced osteoarthritis severity, slowed disease progression by reducing inflammation, and protected joints from damage, showing a protective effect in rats with induced osteoarthritis, likely due to their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

This study aims to determine the COD, NH3-N and turbidity disposal efficiencies from leachate in the Bingöl landfill and highlight the electrocoagulation (EC) process’s performance in removing these pollutants. After establishing that landfill leachate was intermediate aged, its characteristics were identified using physical, chemical and elemental analyses. Six parallel-connected electrode plates with stainless steel as the cathode and aluminium as the anode were used to construct an electrocoagulation cell. After a 40-min treatment interval, the optimal disposal efficiencies for COD and turbidity from the leachate were determined to be 87% and 62%, respectively, at pH 5. Following a 40-min reaction, BOD5 concentration and BOD5/COD ratio were determined to be 85.75 mg O2/L and 0.64, respectively, at pH 5. At a NaCl concentration of 10 mM, the optimum disposal efficiency for NH3-N was determined to be 33%. The reaction kinetics matched pseudo-first-order (PFO) kinetics due to high correlation coefficients (R2 = 0.93–0.99) in removing COD, NH3-N and turbidity under different experimental conditions. The optimal reaction rate constants were determined as 2.93 × 10−2 min−1, 1.92 × 10−2 min−1 and 7.3 × 10−3 min−1 for the disposal of COD, NH3-N and turbidity, respectively. Energy consumption, unit energy consumption and total consumption cost rose in the EC process when the current density was augmented from 15 to 25 mA/cm2.

Due to increasing climate change, it has become important to determine whether the dose-response relationship of organisms to some substances is affected by temperature. For this reason, in this study, it was aimed to reveal the effect of the temperature variable on the toxic response using the Dreissena polymorpha model organism and some of its biomarkers. For this purpose, acetylcholinesterase (AChE), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in Dreissena polymorpha exposed to subletal concentrations of λ-cyhalothrin at different temperatures were measured using commercial ELISA kits. According to the results obtained, there was a statistically significant increase in MDA levels in the groups exposed to λ-cyhalothrin, while a decrease in GSH levels was found. AChE levels were inhibited especially in the groups exposed high concentrartion of λcyhalothrin. It was also found that the inhibition levels increased depending on the application times. While SOD enzyme activity decreased, CAT enzyme activity increased depending on the exposure concentration. It has been observed that different temperature have different effects on the toxicity of λ-cyhalothrin. It was observed that λ-cyhalothrin caused oxidative stress and neurotoxicity, and the toxicity of λ-cyhalothrin changed depending on the temperature.

The members of the genus Marrubium are of great interest because they contain biologically active compounds. With in this mind, we aimed to examine the chemical profiles and biological activities (antioxidant, enzyme inhibition and antimicrobial effects) of different extracts of Marrubium astracanicum subsp. macrodon. Extractions of the plants were carried out with the solvent n-hexane, acetone, acetone/water (70 %), and water. The antioxidant activity of these extracts was evaluated through six different assays, namely 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), metal chelating ability (MCA), and phosphomolybdenum (PBD). Additionally, the inhibitory effects of these solvents on five enzymes acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), tyrosinase, amylase, and glucosidase were investigated. The study detected 38 compounds in a plant, with the highest content in acetone and acetone/water extracts. The acetone/water extract demonstrated the highest antioxidant activity aligning with its superior total phenolic (51.9 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g) and flavonoid (31.0 mg rutin equivalent (RE)/g) content, highlighting a direct correlation between bioactive compound concentration and antioxidant potential across various assays. Regarding the enzyme inhibition activity, the acetone/water extract of this plant exhibited significant AChE inhibition measuring 2.5 mg galantamine equivalent (GALAE)/g and anti-glucosidase activity measuring 1.2 mmol acarbose equivalent (ACAE)/g. In antimicrobial evaluation, the acetone extract exhibited good antimicrobial activity against B. cereus at 0.2 mg/ml dose. In molecular docking analysis, delphinidin 3,5 diglucoside showed a good interaction with the active site of AChE active. Through the application of network pharmacology, an in-depth exploration was conducted to unravel the potential of compounds from M. astracanicum against Alzheimer's disease. The study specifically focused on identifying key targets within the Alzheimer's disease pathway, pinpointing crucial proteins such as Glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK3), Prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 (PTGS2), and Alzheimer's-associated amyloid precursor protein (APP). In summary, the plant can serve as a valuable ingredient in the production of functional products within the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and cosmeceutical applications.

Based on this information, we aimed to evaluate the biological properties (antioxidant, enzyme inhibition and cytotoxicity) and chemical profile of the extract of Centaurea stapfiana, an unstudied species. The highest total phenolic content was found in the ethanol/water extract with 32.17 mg GAE/g. A total of 102 of them were identified by HPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS analysis. These compounds were mainly hydroxybenzoic acid and hydroxycinnamic acid as well as flavonoids. In the antioxidant tests, the ethanol/water extract had the best free radical scavenging and reducing ability. However, in the enzyme inhibition test, the ethanol extract was the most active. The extracts were also tested on two tumour cell lines (RAW 264.7 and HepG2) and one non-tumour cell line (S17). The ethanol extract showed the promising effect on HepG2 (cell viability: 28.6 % at 50 g/ml). Furthermore, we examined the interactions between the compounds and enzymatic and cellular targets. A good interaction was found between quercetin-3-xylosyl-(1- > 6)-glucoside and iNOS. In summary, our results suggest that C. stapfiana can be considered as a versatile raw material for the development of health-promoting applications in the pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical fields.

Dalğıç, Aras; Yılmazer Polat, Berivan
Geopolymer concrete (GC), also known as green concrete, contains slag, silica fume, and fly ash as binders. The absence of cement in concrete is critical to protect the world from the environmental impacts of cement production. In addition, exposure to high temperatures is a critical parameter that causes loss of strength in concrete. In this study, Geopolymer concrete samples were prepared with 10 different samples containing different proportions of slag, silica fume, and porous ash and subjected to various physical, mechanical, and optical tests. The sample (GS90) with optimum workability and compressive strength, which also showed high performance in water absorption, freeze-thaw, and UPV tests, was used in high-temperature tests. Portland cement concrete (PCC) was used as a control sample. This study investigated the effect of high temperatures on the physical and mechanical properties of fiber-free GCs containing 2%, 5%, and 10% by volume of ceramic fibers. Therefore, fiber-reinforced, fiber-free, and PCC specimens were subjected to high-temperature tests at 100, 300, 600, and 900 °C. As a result of the observation of crack growth, color changes, and compressive strength parameters in the samples subjected to high-temperature tests, the thermal resistance of the 10% ceramic fiber geopolymer concrete sample was 2.5% higher than other samples. There is no study in the literature that examines the behavior of ceramic fiber-reinforced geopolymer concrete at high temperatures. This research revealed an important finding by proving that ceramic fiber reinforcement increases the compressive strength of geopolymer concretes at a remarkable rate after high-temperature impact.
