Pala, Ayşegül; Serdar, Osman; Mişe Yonar, Serpil; Yonar, Muhammet Enis
Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is an organophosphate pesticide that is frequently and widely used to control both agricultural and domestic pests worldwide. In this study, the protective effect of Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) essential oil (FEO) was investigated in carp (Cyprinus carpio) exposed to CPF. The fish were divided into six groups that one control group (no treatment) and five experimental groups (FEO (3ml/100g diet) group, CPF1 (0.023 mg/l) group CPF2 (0.046 mg/l) group, CPF1 (0.023 mg/l) plus FEO (3ml/100g diet) group, CPF2 (0.046 mg/l) plus FEO (3ml/100g diet) group). Blood and tissue (liver, kidney, gill, and brain) samples were taken from the fish at the end of 14 days of application. Hemoglobin (Hb) level, nitoblue tetrazolium (NBT) activity, and total immunoglobulin (TI) level were measured in blood samples of fish. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity was determined in brain tissue while malondialdehyde (MDA) level, reduced glutathione (GSH) level, catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity were determined in liver, kidney, and gill tissues. The results showed that there was a significant decrease in Hb level, NBT activity, and TI levels in CPF-treated fish compared to the control group. In addition, increased in MDA levels and significant decreases in GSH level, AChE, CAT, and GPx activities were observed in CPF-treated groups. However, FEO-treated was showed a significant improvement in all parameters except AChE activity compared to CPF groups. These study findings showed that FEO could improve CPF-induced toxicity in C. carpio, except inhibition of AChE activity.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ3Analysis of heavy metal contamination in surface sediments of Iskenderun Bay, Turkey
Kutlu, Banu; Özcan, Tahir; Özcan, Gülnaz
The ecological risk resulting from the accumulation of some heavy metals in the sediments of Iskenderun Bay was assessed using the following measures: enrichment and contamination factor, pollution load index (PLI), and potential ecological risk index (RI). The concentrations of the studied heavy metals were in the following order: Fe > Ni > Mn > Cr > Zn > Cu > As > Pb > Cd > Hg. Ni and As had the highest EF values. This situation is most likely due to the presence of iron, pesticide, and fertilizer plants in the region. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Ni, As, Mn, and Cr may have harmful effects on faunal communities in sediments. According to the RI, Site 4 was more contaminated and toxic than the other seven study sites, with "moderate"ecological risk. Pearson's correlation coefficient was determined by multivariate methods - cluster and principal component analysis. As can be inferred from the RI values, the potential toxic effect of As and Ni in the sediments is moderate.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ1An effective method to improve nonlinearity value of substitution boxes based on random selection
Artuğer, Fırat; Özkaynak, Fatih
In today's digital society, new design alternatives are needed for substitution box structures, which has critical importance in developing secure information systems that are resistant to algebraic and application attacks, as new attacks negatively affect designs based on mathematical transformations. Although random selection-based substitution box structures are a good alternative against algebraic and application attacks, the low value of nonlinearity criterion is an important problem. Solution suggestions using optimization algorithms have been proposed to address this problem. “Information Sciences 523 (2020) 152–166” is the study that reached the highest nonlinearity value based on optimization algorithms to date. However, the high computational costs of optimization algorithms are another challenge that must be overcome. In this study, it has been shown that the nonlinearity values of random (chaotic) selection substitution box structures can be improved as much as mathematically based designs by using a method that is too simple to compare with optimization algorithms. It has been shown that the nonlinearity value can be improved up to 110 for random selection-based substitution box designs. Although this nonlinearity value is the highest achievable value in the literature based on the random selection principle, the fact that it requires only 2×255×255 processes in the worst case has been evaluated as an important success of the proposed method compared to other design approaches. Other advantages of the proposed method are that the improved substitution box structures are resistant to side-channel attacks, simple structure, easy hardware implementation, and successful results in practical applications such as image encryption. It is believed that all these results will be a motivation for new post-processing techniques to be designed in the future for random selection-based substitution box designs.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ2Preservice teachers' nomophobia levels, sense of loneliness and adjustment to college life
Çevik-Durmaz, Yadigar; Yalçinkaya-Önder, Eylem; Timur, Serkan
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate whether preservice teachers' nomophobia levels, sense of loneliness and adjustment to university life vary based on their demographic characteristics. Additionally, regression analyses were carried out to determine whether their sense of loneliness, nomophobia levels, and adjustment to university life were predictors of each other. Design and Methods: In this quantitative study, the cross-sectional survey research model was used. A total of 234 preservice teachers, 65 of whom were studying at the elementary mathematics department, 81 of whom were studying at the preschool education department, and 88 of whom were studying at the science education department, participated in this study. Independent-samples t test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and simple linear regression analyses were used to analyze the quantitative data. Findings: The main conclusions from this study were that (a) the students with the highest sense of loneliness were the students of the elementary mathematics department, the students with the highest level of nomophobia were the science education students, and the students who adjusted the most to university life were the preschool education students. (b) There were no significant differences between the 1st and 2nd year preservice teachers in terms of their sense of loneliness, nomophobia levels, and adjustment to university life. (c) There were statistically significant differences between the mean total nomophobia scores of the male and female students in favor of the females especially in the “losing connectedness” and “not being able to access information” subscales of nomophobia. (d) A statistically significant difference was found between the preservice teachers whose mothers were high school and university graduates in terms of their academic adjustment in favor of the preservice teachers with mothers who had university degrees. (e) The preservice teachers, who stated that their relationship with their family was very good, had higher levels of sense of loneliness, mobile phone addiction, and adjustment to university life than the others. The results were statistically significant in all total scores of the loneliness scale and dimensions except for the dimensions of nomophobia. (f) The students who were hopeful for the future had a high sense of loneliness and adjustment to university life. It was also determined that the students who were desperate for their future had high mobile phone addiction levels. Apart from nomophobia and its dimensions and the social adjustment dimension of university life, statistically significant differences were found between the hopeful and hopeless students in terms of their sense of loneliness and adjustment to university life. (g) Statistically significant mean differences were found between the students who were generally satisfied with and those that were not satisfied with their life in terms of their sense of loneliness and adjustment to university life with its all dimensions in favor of the satisfied ones. (h) The preservice teachers who lived alone at home had a higher sense of loneliness and better adjustment to university life. It was also noteworthy that the students living in dormitories had higher nomophobia levels than the others. (i) A linear relationship was found between the students' sense of loneliness and adjustment to university life, and sense of loneliness was a significant predictor of adjustment to university life. Practical Implications: Determining students' nomophobia levels, sense of loneliness, and adjustment to university life would be beneficial in bringing students who have difficulty adapting to new living environments into social life.

Heusler shape memory alloys are important for many applications due to their typical magnetic and shape memory behaviors. In this study, a Ni50Mn36Sn12Co2 (at.%) alloy was manufactured by arc-melting technique, then the ingot cooled to ambient temperature in the natural atmosphere. Three different temperatures, including 500 °C (773 K), 700 °C (973 K), and 900 °C (1173 K), was selected for aging the samples cut from the main ingot. The impact of aging on the crystalline; microstructure; caloric; and magnetic properties of the alloys were investigated through x-ray diffraction (XRD); scanning electron microscope; differential scanning calorimetric (DSC), differential thermal analysis, and thermal gravimetric (TG); and physical property measuring system was investigated, respectively. The aging in different temperatures led to the shift DSC curve, such that the martensitic phase transformation temperatures of the sample aged at 773 K increased, however, the transformation at 973 and 1173 K decreased compared to the as-casted alloy. The different phase transformation behavior showed that the alloy aged at 773 K has the maximum elastic energy, enthalpy and entropy change compared to the reset of samples, on the other hand, its crystallite sized obtained from XRD analysis comparably diminished. Besides, the TG analysis revealed that the mass gain almost occurs at a temperature above 773 K, therefore the magnetization of the alloys aged at 973 and 1173 K decreased due to a thin oxide layer formed on the surface of the alloys.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ2Drying of licorice root by novel radiative methods
Icier, Filiz; Ozmen, Duygu; Cevik, Mutlu; Cokgezme, Omer Faruk
In this study, licorice root was successfully dried using two different radiative dryers (Carbon fiber-assisted cabin drying-CFACD and infrared drying-ID), and their effects on some drying characteristics, quality properties, and energy-exergy efficiency were investigated. Page and Verma models were the best models describing the drying behavior of licorice root for CFACD and ID methods, respectively. ID protected total phenolic content (TPC) better than CFACD while the changes of color properties were higher for ID. Energy and exergy efficiencies of CFACD were 40.20 ± 0.20% and 31.87 ± 0.10%, respectively, while these values were 10.39 ± 0.33% and 9.99 ± 0.27% for ID, respectively. Practical applications: The radiative heating method has advantages such as shorter drying time, high-energy efficiency, and high heat transfer coefficient compared to convective drying methods. Infrared drying (ID) is known as the common energy efficient drying method for food materials while the information on the performance of other type of radiative carbon fiber assisted drying (CFACD) systems is limited. In this study, the use of carbon fiber assisted cabin dryer for drying of licorice was evaluated by comparing other radiative type infrared dryer. The drying characteristics of licorice samples having high amount of phenolic contents were compared both in terms of quality and energy performance characteristics of dryers. Energy and exergy efficiencies of CFACD were found to be higher than ID. In addition, more homogeneous temperature distribution and less color change were obtained in the CFACD process. It was determined that the CFACD process could be recommended for drying of licorice samples rather than ID.

This article presents the results of the first paleoseismological studies conducted along the Ulubat Fault and their inferences on the earthquake behavior of the south branch of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ). The Ulubat Fault is divided into 3 segments according to its geometric characteristics and paleoseismological behavior. Along the fault segments, at least 6 paleoearthquake event have been distinguished in the last 16 thousand years with paleoseismolgic fault excavations. The dating results correlated with the historical records show that the latest surface ruptures along the Ulubat Fault occurred with the earthquakes of <161/170 AD (I=IX), 1143 AD (M=6.0) and 1855 AD (M=7.3), respectively, and migrated to the west. Although it does not provide sufficient statistical evaluation opportunity, the paleoseismological data presented in this study proves that the segments of the NAFZ south branch do not present characteristic earthquake behavior in terms of recurrence period and this irregularity may be due to the multi-fragment geometry of the fault zone in the region.

Di Prima, Simone; Stewart, Ryan D.; Abou Najm, Majdi R.; Ribeiro Roder, Ludmila; Giadrossich, Filippo; Campus, Sergio; Angulo-Jaramillo, Rafael; Yilmaz, Deniz; Roggero, Pier Paolo; Pirastru, Mario
Water-repellent soils usually experience water flow impedance during the early stage of a wetting process followed by progressive increase of infiltration rate. Current infiltration models are not formulated to describe this peculiar process. Similarly, simplified methods of soil hydraulic characterization (e.g., BEST) are not equipped to handle water-repellent soils. Here, we present an adaptation of the BEST method, named BEST-WR, for the hydraulic characterization of soils at any stage of water-repellency. We modified the Haverkamp explicit transient infiltration model, included in BEST for modeling infiltration data, by embedding a scaling factor describing the rate of attenuation of infiltration rate due to water repellency. The new model was validated using analytically generated data, involving soils with different texture and a dataset that included data from 60 single-ring infiltration tests. The scaling factor was used as a new index to assess soil water repellency in a Mediterranean wooded grassland, where the scattered evergreen oak trees induced more noticeable water repellency under the canopies as compared to the open spaces. The new index produced results in line with those obtained using the water drop penetration time test, which is one of the most widely test applied for quantifying soil water repellency persistence. Finally, we used BEST-WR to determine the hydraulic characteristic curves under both hydrophilic and hydrophobic conditions.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ2Comparison of quality attributes of minced beef samples thawed by ohmic and conventional methods
Cevik, Mutlu; Icier, Filiz
Frozen minced meat samples having different fat contents (2%, 10%, or 18%) were thawed using two different standard thawing methods (RT: +4°C refrigeration thawing, URWT: +4°C under running water thawing), and a novel alternative method (ohmic thawing-OT at voltage gradients of 10, 13, and 16 V/cm). The drip loss values of meat samples changed in the range of 0.01%–1.65%. For OT, the change in the color increased as the fat content increased. OT shortened the thawing time, on average, by 64% and 87% compared to URWT and RT, respectively, while it resulted in similar effects on proximate composition and microbiological load with standard thawing methods. This novel thawing method did not cause any mutagenic formation, and the metal migration was in allowable limits. It is thought that the results showed that OT method has the potential to be applied as a novel alternative method for thawing of meat products. Practical applications: For long-term storage of meat and meat products, freezing is commonly used. However, frozen food must be thawed before use. For this reason, two different conventional thawing methods were recommended by US-FDA. However, conventional thawing methods have some disadvantages such as long process times, high energy consumptions, and waste water formation. Ohmic thawing has shorter process time, high energy efficiency, and does not produce any waste water. In this study, frozen minced meat samples (with fat content of 2%, 10%, or 18%) were thawed using different thawing conditions (RT, URWT, and OT at voltage gradients of 10, 13, and 16 V/cm). OT shortened the thawing time. Drip loss was found to be high for OT. The effect of OT on microbiological load and proximate composition was not different from conventional thawing. OT method did not cause any mutagenic formation.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Fermatean fuzzy TOPSIS-based approach for occupational risk assessment in manufacturing
Gul, Muhammet; Lo, Huai-Wei; Yucesan, Melih
The importance of risk assessment in the context of occupational health and safety by manufacturing operators strengthens their hands in solving the problems they may encounter in business processes related to health and safety. One of the most important phases of conducting an exhaustive occupational risk assessment is to analyze potential hazards and associated risks quantitatively. Since manufacturing is one of the industries that require workers to be highly exposed to work, creating a safer environment to reduce occupational injuries is an important task. This study proposes a novel fuzzy risk assessment approach developed by integrating Fermatean fuzzy sets (FFSs) and technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) method for ranking potential hazards in manufacturing. FFSs are a new version of fuzzy set theory that covers the intuitionistic fuzzy sets and Pythagorean fuzzy sets. This version of the fuzzy set is crucial in the decision-making process to handle uncertain information more easily and reflect uncertainty better. A linguistic scale under Fermatean fuzzy documentation has also been developed for experts/decision makers to disclose their judgments easily. Occupational risk analysts can benefit from this approach since FFSs are used for the first time in occupational risk assessment, and the approach is presented in integration with TOPSIS. The proposed approach is applied in the aluminum plate-manufacturing process risk assessment. In the conclusion of the implementation, risks arising in the production are prioritized. In addition, this study made comparisons with other fuzzy methods to demonstrate the proposed approach’s difference and practicality. This study’s results can support practitioners and risk analysts in formulating the improvement measures to increase the safety of the work environment further.

Sancak-Uzunpazar Fault Zone is N40E-trending sinistral shear zone that has a 50 km length and 5 km width between Karakocan (Elazığ) in southwest and Kaynarpınar (Bingöl) in northeast. The fault extends parallelly to East Anatolian Fault is bounded by the North Anatolian Fault to the northeast and Karakoçan Fault to the southeast. Herein, morphological features, the tectonic setting of the Sancak-Uzunpazar Fault Zone and the first paleoseismological studies on it is represented. The Sancak-Uzunpazar Fault Zone is consist of two parallel segments (called East and West) with a 1.5 km distance. Conducted field studies and aerial photogrometry show that the segments exhibit morphological features like faceted surfaces, faulted scarps, shutter ridges, and offset streams. Especially, average offsets are about 7-12 m along the eastern segment while the cumulative maximum offset reaches 1.1 km. Moreover, revealed paleoseismological data show evidence of at least two surface ruptures during Holocene. Obtained morphological data reveal that the Sancak-Uzunpazar Fault Zone may have a relatively lower slip rate when compared to other active faults in the region and the reflection of the slip rate to the morphology is more evident in the eastern segment.

Sevindik, Emre; Aydogan, Melike; Paksoy, Mehmet Y.
In this study, phylogenetic analysis of Turkish Conringia (Brassicaceae) species was conducted based on nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrITS) and chloroplast DNA (trnL-F) sequences. In addition, the relationships between the sequences of some Brassicaceae family species retrieved from NCBI, and Conringia species were documented. All of the plant specimens were collected at their flowering and vegetation periods from different regions of Turkey, and brought to the laboratory. Total genomic DNA was extracted using the GeneMark kit. In PCR analyses, ITS4 and ITS5A primers were used for the amplification of the nrITS region, while the trnLe and trnLf primers were used for the cpDNA trnL-F region. The DNA sequences obtained were then edited using BioEdit and FinchTV, and analyzed using MEGA 6.0 software. Neighbor joining (NJ) and bootstrap trees were constructed in order to identify the relationships among Conringia taxa. The nrITS sequences ranged between 573 and 672 nucleotides, while the trnL-F sequences ranged between 346 and 764 nucleotides. The divergence values of nrITS sequences differed between 0.177 and 0.00 and divergence values of trnL-F sequences differed between 0.902 and 0.00. NJ tree generated using nrITS and trnL-F sequences consisted of two clades. In trees generated with both the nrITS and trnL-F sequences, C. orientalis, C. grandiflora and C. austriaca appeared within the same group. In addition, according to the phylogenetic analysis results obtained with other Brassicaceae species, it is revealed that the Conringia genus is polyphyletic.

Magnesium (Mg) deficiency may affect bone metabolism by increasing osteoclasts, de-creasing osteoblasts, promoting inflammation/oxidative stress, and result in subsequent bone loss. The objective of the present study was to identify the molecular mechanism underlying the bone protective effect of different forms of Mg (inorganic magnesium oxide (MgO) versus organic magnesium picolinate (MgPic) compound) in rats fed with a high-fat diet (HFD). Forty-two Wistar albino male rats were divided into six group (n = 7): (i) control, (ii) MgO, (iii) MgPic, (iv) HFD, (v) HFD + MgO, and (vi) HFD + MgPic. Bone mineral density (BMD) increased in the Mg supplemented groups, especially MgPic, as compared with the HFD group (p < 0.001). As compared with the HFD + MgO group, the HFD + MgPic group had higher bone P (p < 0.05) and Mg levels (p < 0.001). In addition, as compared to MgO, MgPic improved bone formation by increasing the levels of osteo-genetic proteins (COL1A1 (p < 0.001), BMP2 (p < 0.001), Runx2 (p < 0.001), OPG (p < 0.05), and OCN (p < 0.001), IGF-1 (p < 0.001)), while prevented bone resorption by reducing the levels of RANK and RANKL (p < 0.001). In conclusion, the present data showed that the MgPic could increase osteogenic protein levels in bone more effectively than MgO, prevent bone loss, and contribute to bone formation in HFD rats.

The authors regret that the total evapotranspiration shown in Fig. 7 (821 mm) was the measured H2O flux for the whole two year measurement period. The correct average value for the two years was 411 mm yr−1, or 33% of the measured annual average precipitation. This left 827 mm yr−1 as the “estimated runoff” (see corrected figure). The sign of the average NEE values in the Abstract and Conclusions should be negative. All other information is correct, including the equations and interpretations. The authors would like to apologise for any inconvenience this has caused. [Figure presented]

The corundum is found in the rocks of the Berit metaophiolite in Eastern Anatolia, near Doğanşehir a province of Malatya. Metaophiolitic rocks consist mainly of garnet metagabbro, granulite, amphibolite, mylonitic amphibolite, garnet amphibolite, amphibole schist, pyroxenite, mylonitic pyroxenite, orthopyroxenite, harzburgite, serpentinized dunite and diorite units. Corundum occurrences are mostly found in pyroxenites, amphibolites, peridotites and granulites. Their colors change in range between reddish pink, pink and light pink. They are usually in structure of translucent, vitreous and sometimes cracked. They are seen scattered or clustered together inside the rocks in which they are found. The size of their crystals ranges from 0.5 cm to 10 cm and their euhedral crystals are observed in pseudohexagonal form. As a result of the petrographic examinations, it was observed that pyroxene, amphibole, garnet and plagioclase minerals accompanied with the corundum. The samples of the rocks containing the corundum has qualifications which will be as an object of gemstone and ornament by means of cutting and shining. Large specimens of corundum can be processed alone. Samples, being as scattered and small granules inside the rock can be processed together with the host rock. In the processed samples, it was obtained patterns like the samples of corundum with zoisite which were in great demand in the world gemstone market.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ1Sequential infiltration analysis of infiltration curves measured with disc infiltrometer in layered soils
Moret-Fernández, D.; Latorre, B.; Lassabatere, L.; Di Prima, S.; Castellini, M.; Yilmaz, D.; Angulo-Jaramilo, R.
The soil sorptivity, S, and saturated hydraulic conductivity, Ks, can be estimated from the inverse analysis of a cumulative infiltration curve using the quasi-exact implicit (QEI) formulation or its corresponding 4-Terms (4T) approximation. Although these models consider the soil as homogeneous media, there is no information about how heterogeneous profiles can affect the inferred soil properties. This work analyzes the influence of layered soils on Ks and S estimates using QEI and 4T models, and designs a new procedure for treating infiltration curves measured on layered soil profiles. The Sequential Infiltration Analysis (SIA) method considers a sequence of increasing time series from the cumulative infiltration data to estimate Ks and S, and its corresponding RMSE as a function of the number of samples used. A procedure to estimate the thickness of the upper uniform soil layer from the estimated wetting front advance (WFA) is also reported. The SIA method was applied on: (i) synthetic homogeneous profiles of loam soil and six layered profiles involving a 1, 2 and 3 cm thickness loam layer over silty or sandy loam soils, respectively, (ii) stratified laboratory soil columns, and (iii) 20 experimental infiltrations performed in a semiarid region of North-Eastern Spain. Similar results were found between QEI and 4T models for all cases. Erroneous estimates of Ks and S were observed when the total infiltration time series was considered for the analysis, regardless of the presence of soil layering. In opposite, estimates improved when the SIA method was applied to the layered systems. The SIA method exploits the fact that the RMSE increases when the wetting front reaches the interface between the soil layers. Such increase allows: (i) detection of the soil heterogeneity, (ii) determination of the infiltration time, to, required for the wetting front to reach the lower layer, and, (iii) accurate estimates of the upper layer Ks and S along with its thickness. Laboratory experiments on layered soils and field measurements demonstrated that the SIA method could be satisfactorily applied on different curves with contrasting shapes and magnitudes. Although soil layering encountered on most field samplings restricted the treatment of the observed infiltrations to short-medium times, the SIA method allowed robust estimates of Ks and S. These results indicate that the proposed method is a promising tool for characterizing the hydraulic properties of layered and heterogeneous soil profiles.
