Designing the Clamp System with the Emergency Braking System in the trains by using PLC and SCADA

Ustundag, Aybike; Gencer, Cetin; Paul, R.

As a result of the developments in rail technologies, the vehicles and equipment used in these systems are also developing rapidly. It is in a rapid technological development in vehicles used in rail systems. The resistance forces affecting the movement of the rail system vehicles try to prevent its movement. In addition, the incident adherence and skidding that occur during the course of the rail system vehicles play an important role in the movements of these vehicles. Calculation of forces affecting the movement of rail system vehicles and designing these vehicles accordingly is also important for the safety of these vehicles. When braking is applied on a train running at a certain speed; It stops for a certain time and distance according to road condition, braking and speed on the train. The distance traveled until braking and stopping is the braking distance. Trains have an emergency braking system, but this system locks the train wheels. In this study along with the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), the rail clamping system was designed with PLC and SCADA. By using the ABS used in cars on the locomotive and wagons of the train, it is aimed to lock the wheels when the train brakes and to prevent the train from derailment in case of sudden braking with the rail clamp system.

Facile preparation of commercial Bi2O3 nanoparticle decorated activated carbon for pseudocapacitive supercapacitor applications

Üner, Osman; Aslan, Naim; Sarıoğlu, Akın; Semerci, Fatih; Koç, Mümin Mehmet

In this work, a facile method to prepare Bi2O3 decorated activated carbon (Bi2O3@AC) composites with high pseudocapacitive properties was presented. The inorganic–organic composites synthesized using commercial Bi2O3 and active carbon with different weight ratio. The composites were assessed using spectroscopic, microscopic, and diffractive techniques. Our assessments confirmed that active carbons were successfully doped with commercial Bi2O3 nanoparticles with different dopant rates. The electrochemical performance of as-prepared materials was researched by cyclic voltammetry, chronopotentiometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 6 M KOH electrolyte. Higher specific capacitance was achieved for increased Bi2O3 nanoparticle in composites. The 20%-Bi2O3@AC had a maximum specific capacitance of 565 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g. In addition, the symmetrically assembled supercapacitor delivers a high energy density (23.0 Wh kg−1). Moreover, 67% of the initial capacitance is maintained after 1500 cycles at 200 mV/s, suggesting good cycling stability. Due to the synergistic effect of compositing a promising electrochemical performance was observed that was not obtained by bare AC or Bi2O3. As a result, the electrochemical properties of 20%-Bi2O3@AC composite is promising and it may be used as potential electrode for supercapacitor.

Zengin, Gokhan; Stojković, Dejan; Mahomoodally, Mohamad Fawzi; Jugreet, Bibi Sharmeen; Paksoy, Mehmet Yavuz; Ivanov, Marija; Gašić, Uroš; Gallo, Monica; Montesano, Domenico

Seseli L. is one of the largest genera of the Apiaceae family widely known for their traditional uses as herbal remedies. In the present study, the methanolic and water extracts of two Seseli species, S. gummiferum and S. transcaucasicum were evaluated for their bioactive contents and biological activities. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents in the extracts ranged from 19.09 to 24.33 mg GAE/g and from 0.45 to10.09 mg RE/g, respectively. Moreover, while narcissin was detected as the most abundant component in the methanolic extract of S. transcaucasicum (261.40 µg/g), chlorogenic acid was identified as the major component in all the other extracts, although a high amount was also present in the methanolic S. transcaucasicum extract (107.48–243.12 µg/g). The total antioxidant capacity was also determined by the phosphomolybdenum assay (0.66–1.18 mM TE/g). Other antioxidant assays such as the radical scavenging assays (DPPH: 5.51–11.45 mg TE/g; ABTS: 43.46–51.91 mg TE/g), reducing assays (CUPRAC: 41.67–53.20 mg TE/g; FRAP: 31.26–34.14 mg TE/g), as well as the metal chelating activity assay (14.38–38.57 mg EDTAE/g) were conducted. All the extracts showed inhibitory potential against the enzyme’s amylase (0.12–0.78 mM ACAE/g), acetyl-and butyryl-cholinesterase (0.15–9.71 mg GALAE/g), while only the methanolic extracts acted as inhibitors of tyrosinase (107.15 and 109.37 mg KAE/g) and only the water extract of S. gummiferum displayed anti-glucosidase activity (0.13 mM ACAE/g). Interestingly, the methanolic extracts of both Seseli species showed lower cytotoxicity towards HaCaT cells (IC50: >500 µg/mL), compared to the water extracts (IC50: 267.8 and 321.41 µg/mL). Besides, only the methanolic extracts showed a slight wound healing effect (28.21 and 31.23%). All extracts showed antibacterial action against Staphylococcus lugdunensis (minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations: 0.025–2 mg/mL). S. gummiferum methanolic extract, which exhibited the highest antibacterial potency was found to inhibit adhesion and invasion of S. lugdunensis to HaCaT cells as well. Taken together, this study demonstrated the two Seseli species to harbour interesting bioactive components, in particular polyphenolics and to exhibit several biological properties that could be further investigated for their potential exploitation as healing agents as supported by various traditional medicinal uses.

The European Water Framework Directive (WFD) (2000/60/EC) is the most visionary piece of European environmental legislation that aims to achieve good water status of both surface water and groundwater bodies. The Directive provides a fundamental basis for surface water monitoring activities in the European Member States. The objective of this study is to investigate the occurrence of micropollutants in the Yesilirmak River and to develop a cost-effective monitoring strategy based on spatiotemporal data. A 2-year seasonal monitoring program was conducted between 2016 and 2018, and the water samples were analyzed for 45 priority substances as defined by the WFD and 250 national river basin–specific pollutants. In the basin, 166 pollutants were quantified in at least one of the samples with individual concentrations ranging from 6 × 10−6μg/L to 100 mg/L. Fifty-four pollutants with a frequency of occurrence greater than 5% were selected for further evaluation. Based on statistical evaluation of the data, 20 pollutants were identified as the pollutants of primary concern. These 20 pollutants were grouped under three categories (metals, biocides, and industrial organic compounds) and their spatiotemporal distributions in the basin were assessed to establish a monitoring strategy specific to each pollutant category. The results of the study revealed that the common season for the monitoring of all pollutant categories was the spring. This study provides a generic methodology for the development of a cost-effective water quality monitoring strategy, which can be applicable for use in different basins and pollutant datasets.

A multiple criteria decision-making approach for increasing the preparedness level of sales departments against COVID-19 and future pandemics: A real-world case

Ortiz-Barrios, Miguel; Borrego-Areyanes, Arlen Alaine; Gómez-Villar, Iván Darío; De Felice, Fabio; Petrillo, Antonella; Gul, Muhammet; Yucesan, Melih

The impact of the pandemic and the lockdown has been more devastating than expected on the world economy. It is essential to formulate strategies in real-time. In this research, a multicriteria decision-making model for increasing the preparedness level of sales departments when facing COVID-19 waves and future pandemics is proposed. The model is comprised of 8 criteria, 29 sub-criteria, and 7 alternatives. The study is based on the integration of the AHP and TOPSIS techniques. AHP is used for calculating the criteria and sub-criteria weights. While, TOPSIS is used for calculating the preparedness level, ranking the companies, and identifying the weaknesses that should be addressed for increasing their effectiveness in the current market scenario. The model is developed with the aid of an experts’ group from the electrical appliance sector and studies from the reported literature. This application is completely novel in the literature and has been applied in the wild with remarkable companies in Colombia. A case study in the electrical appliance sector is presented as a pilot study but it should be noted that the methodology is flexible and scalable in any scenario.

A holistic FMEA approach by fuzzy-based Bayesian network and best–worst method

Yucesan, Melih; Gul, Muhammet; Celik, Erkan

Failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) is a risk analysis tool widely used in the manufacturing industry. However, traditional FMEA has limitations such as the inability to deal with uncertain failure data including subjective evaluations of experts, the absence of weight values of risk parameters, and not considering the conditionality between failure events. In this paper, we propose a holistic FMEA to overcome these limitations. The proposed approach uses the fuzzy best–worst (FBWM) method in weighting three risk parameters of FMEA, which are severity (S), occurrence (O), and detection (D), and to find the preference values of the failure modes according to parameters S and D. On the other side, it uses the fuzzy Bayesian network (FBN) to determine occurrence probabilities of the failure modes. Experts use a procedure using linguistic variables whose corresponding values are expressed in trapezoidal fuzzy numbers, and determine the preference values of the failure modes according to parameter O in the constructed BN. Thus, the FBN including expert judgments and fuzzy set theory addresses uncertainty in failure data and includes a robust probabilistic risk analysis logic to capture the dependence between failure events. As a demonstration of the approach, a case study was conducted in an industrial kitchen equipment manufacturing facility. The results of the approach have also been compared with existed methods demonstrating its robustness.

Next‐generation ultrasol curcumin boosts muscle endurance and reduces muscle damage in treadmill‐exhausted rats

Sahin, Emre; Orhan, Cemal; Erten, Fusun; Er, Besir; Acharya, Manutosh; Morde, Abhijeet A.; Padigaru, Muralidhara; Sahin, Kazim

Curcumin positively affects performance during exercise and subsequent recovery. However, curcumin has limited bioavailability unless consumed in larger doses. In the current study, we examined the impact of a new formulation of curcumin, Next‐Generation Ultrasol Curcumin (NGUC), which is relatively more bioavailable than natural curcumin on exhaustion time, grip strength, muscle damage parameters, and serum and muscle proteins. A total of 28 rats were randomly grouped as control (C, non‐supplemented), exercise (E, non‐supplemented), E+NGUC100 (supplemented with 100 mg/kg BW NGUC), and E+NGUC200 (supplemented with 200 mg/kg NGUC). Grip strength and exhaustion time were increased with NGUC supplementation (p < 0.0001). Creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), lactic acid (LA), myoglobin, malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations were reduced in serum, and muscle tissue in NGUC supplemented groups (p < 0.05). In contrast, NGUC supplementation elevated the antioxidant enzyme levels compared to the non‐supplemented exercise group (p < 0.01). Additionally, inflammatory cytokines were inhibited with NGUC administration (p < 0.05). NGUC decreased PGC‐1α, p‐4E‐BP1, p‐mTOR, MAFbx, and MuRF1 proteins in muscle tissue (p < 0.05). These results indicate that NGUC boosts exercise performance while reducing muscle damage by targeting antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, and muscle mass regulatory pathways.

In this study, the novel azo dye FeII, CoII, ZnII, and RuII complexes with an azo dye ligand (L: (E)-4-((4-methoxyphenyl)diazenyl)-3-methyl-1H-pyrazol-5-amine) were synthesized. The structures of the complexes were characterized by FT-IR, elemental analysis, UV-Vis, mass spectra (FeII and CoII), NMR spectra (only diamagnetic ZnII and RuII), thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA). All of the newly synthesized compounds were tested for their biochemical properties, including enzyme inhibitory and antioxidant activities. According to the in vitro ABTS, DPPH, CUPRAC, and FRAP antioxidant methods, the ligand and its metal complexes showed close antioxidant activities to the standards (BHA, BHT, ascorbic acid, and α-tocopherol). Enzyme inhibitions of the metal complexes were investigated against glutathione S-transferase (GST), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) enzymes. The best inhibition values (Ki) were observed for Ru(II) complex against GST (14.36 ± 2.16 µM), AChE (16.86 ± 2.74 µM), and BChE (14.12 ± 2.04 µM).

Electrogravimetric analysis of poly(aniline-co-o-toluidine) copolymer films in the presence of fluoride ions

Unal, Asuman; Robert Hillman, A.; Ryder, Karl S.; Cihangir, Salih

Polyaniline itself can be converted to its conductive form from its insulating form by applying an oxidising potential in which polyaniline is converted to its positive charge state. Anions in the target solution are driven into the positively charged polymer film by electrostatic force, and this process is reversed when a reduction potential is applied. Consequently, interfacial processes of polyaniline modified electrode make it viable to remove undesirable ions from the target solution. During this process, polyaniline operates as an ion-exchanger by directing specific ions at definite potentials, which is the principle of the electrochemically switched ion-exchange technique. Therefore, polyaniline can be employed as a convenient material to perform as a new ion-exchanger modified film in an acidic environment. On the other hand, an abrupt decrease in the electroactivity of polyaniline at elevated pH values restricts its use in such practical applications. To overcome this problem, copolymerization of aniline and o-toluidine is expedient as it will be able to enhance the electrochemical properties of polyaniline. Hence, several copolymers were synthesised in the presence of different aniline and o-toluidine feedstock ratios. It was found that the surface coverage value of a representative poly(aniline-co-o-toluidine) copolymer film was 139.7 nmol cm−2 compared with 76 nmol cm−2 for pure Pani under identical conditions. In addition, the redox cycling in monomer-free NaF solutions showed that the poly(aniline-co-o-toluidine) film exhibited excellent reversibility between redox reactions at pH 6.60. These outcomes clearly illustrate the contribution of o-toluidine to the electrochemical properties of polyaniline at raised pH medium.

Tectonic geomorphology of the yatağan fault (Muğla, sw turkey): Implications for quantifying vertical slip rates along active normal faults

Basmenji, Mehran; Sançar, Taylan; Dikbaş, Aynur; Boulton, Sarah J.; Akyüz, Hüsnü Serdar

South Western Anatolia is dominated by E-W and NW-SE trending active faults. The dip-slip Yatağan Fault is one of these active structures that trends in a NW direction for ~30 km. To assess the relative tectonic activity of the Yatağan Fault, two geomorphic segments were defined along the fault: the FS-1 (northern segment) and the FS-2 (southern segment). The vertical slip rate pattern of the fault was analyzed using steepness indexes, chi (χ) plots, and log-log slope area graphs. Results of the analyses indicate that the steepness of the streams draining the footwall reveal increasingly higher values downstream along the fault. All of the main basins contain at least one slope-break knickpoint associated with tectonic uplift. Facet morphology-based investigations using empirical methods along faceted spurs of the Yatağan Fault indicate vertical slip rates of 0.16 ± 0.05 mm/year and 0.3 ± 0.05 mm/year for the FS-1 and the FS-2, according to relationship of facet slope angle (Rsa ). Additionally, using the facet basal height relationship (Rbh ) we calculated slip rates of 0.24 mm/year and 0.36 mm/year for the FS-1 and the FS-2 segments, respectively. Mountain front sinuosity analysis yields values of 1.34 and 1.2, while the ratio of valley-floor width to valley height gives values of 0.64 and 0.24 for the FS-1 and the FS-2 respectively, indicating typical active mountain front where the uplift rates are ≥ 0.5 mm/year. Hypsometric analysis suggest a transition from mature to older stage for catchments along the Yatağan Fault. Comprehensive interpretation of the results from morphometric analysis, vertical slip rate calculations, and data based on field observations suggest preponderance of tectonic activity over erosional process along the Yatağan Fault. Our analyses reveal that the rate of the tectonic activity gradually increases from the FS-1 to the FS-2 along the fault.

Optimization of the adsorption of methyl green dye on almond shells using central composite design

    Tanaydin, Mehmet Kayra; Goksu, Ali

Almond shells, known as the agricultural industry’s waste, were utilized to adsorb methyl green dye from aqueous solutions. The effects of initial concentration (2–10 mg/L), the adsorbent dosage (0.1–0.5 g), shaking speed (150–250 rpm), pH (4–7), temperature (20°C–50°C), and particle size (137–892 μm) on methyl green adsorption on the almond shell were examined. The response surface methodology was used to optimize the methyl green dye’s adsorption process using the almond shell. The central composite design was utilized to obtain optimum experimental conditions. Performed experiments obtained the isotherm data, and it was analyzed by utilizing the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models. The isotherm data can be fitted well by the Langmuir model. The pseudo-second-order model can anticipate the adsorption kinetics. The thermodynamic parameters such as ΔG° ΔH°, and ΔS° were calculated and found to be –2.878, 42.12 kJ/mol, and 0.151 kJ/mol K, respectively. These values demonstrated that the present adsorption process was feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic in the temperature scope of (20°C–50°C). This study indicates that almond shells were considered an efficient adsorbent to remove from the aqueous solutions. The maximum adsorption capacity of the almond shell (1.1 mg/g) was obtained. In this system, the almond shell’s pre-activation process was not preferred because it will create an extra cost. Adsorption kinetics studies showed that the model is represented as a pseudo-second-order of adsorption data.

Study on the thermal and electrical properties of novel poly[propyl acrylate-co-phenyl methacrylate] containing acetamido group

    Biryan, Fatih; Pihtili, Güzin

In the available research, firstly a new 3-acetamido phenyl acrylate (APhA) monomer and a novel copolymer containing acetamido phenyl group were synthesized. 3-acetamido phenyl acrylate (APhA) monomer was acquired by the reaction of acryloyl chloride and N-(3-hydroxyphenyl) acetamide. 3-acetamido propyl methacrylate (AAPMA) monomer was prepared in our previous study. A series of copolymers were prepared using these monomers in different mole ratios by free-radical polymerization method at 70 °C The structure of P(AAPMA-co-APhA) copolymer systems was characterized by FT-IR and NMR techniques. Thermal characteristics of P(AAPMA-co-APhA) copolymers were evaluated through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) in an N2 atmosphere. Due to the presence of the amide group, we can say that the polymer with the least weight loss and the highest residue percentage at 500 °C is poly(APhA). AC electrical conductivity and dielectric and electrical parameters were analyzed in a range of 100 Hz–20 kHz frequency. The dielectric constant values of poly(AAPMA-co-APhA0.63) and P(AAPMA-co-APhA0.30) were 4.98 and 4.57 respectively. According to the results, the dielectric value decreased as the APhA units increased.

A novel approach for efficient stance detection in online social networks with metaheuristic optimization

    Can, Umit; Alatas, Bilal

In the 19th and 20th centuries, social networks have been an important topic in a wide range of fields from sociology to education. However, with the advances in computer technology in the 21st century, significant changes have been observed in social networks, and conventional networks have evolved into online social networks. The size of these networks, along with the large amount of data they generate, has introduced new social networking problems and solutions. Social network analysis methods are used to understand social network data. Today, several methods are implemented to solve various social network analysis problems, albeit with limited success in certain problems. Thus, the researchers develop new methods or recommend solutions to improve the performance of the existing methods. In the present paper, a novel optimization method that aimed to classify social network analysis problems was proposed. The problem of stance detection, an online social network analysis problem, was first tackled as an optimization problem. Furthermore, a new hybrid metaheuristic optimization algorithm was proposed for the first time in the current study, and the algorithm was compared with various methods. The analysis of the findings obtained with accuracy, precision, recall, and F-measure classification metrics demonstrated that our method performed better than other methods.

The lupine is a nutritious and protective plant against diabetes. Objective: In the present study, the effects of Lupinus albus fruits on malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), total protein, ADEK vitamins, and cholesterol values, which are the indi-cators of oxidative damage and antioxidant defense. In this regard, muscle, liver, renal, and brain tissues of STZ-induced type I diabetes rats were studied. Methods: The analyzes of ADEK vitamins and cholesterol levels in tissues were performed via Shimadzu HPLC device. The lipid peroxidation levels were measured at 532 nm in spectrophotome-ter. Determination of GSH was read at 412 nm against blank, and for the total protein levels Lowry method was applied. Results: According to the results obtained, it was determined that among the rats with induced type I diabetes, the group applied lupine fruit extract was found to have increased GSH level and decreased MDA levels in all the tissues. The protein values were increased in liver tissues but decreased in the other tissues. The level of vitamins was significantly increased in almost all the tissues in the diabetic group. Conclusion: In the present study, it was shown that the lupine reduced the devastating effects of type I diabetes by decreasing the fasting blood glucose and lipid peroxidation values and increasing the glutathione level in comparison to the diabetic group.
