Traditional knowledge on wild plants in Uzumlu (Erzincan-Turkey)

Korkmaz, Mustafa; Karakus, Sinem; Selvi, Selami; Çakilcioglu, Ugur

This survey was conducted in Uzumlu district and its surrounding villages in order to determine the useful plants consumed for different ethnobotanical purposes such as animal fodder, ornamental plant, good, fuel, and dye by the local people living in the area between 2010 and 2011 summer vegetation periods. Totally 77 traditional uses of 64 plant taxa were determined at the end of the study. The biggest families with the numbers of taxa were Fabaceae (10), Asteraceae (9), Rosaceae (6), Salicaceae (4) Brassicaceae, Poaceae, and Liliaceae (3). All parts of 42 plants, stems of 11 plants, flowers of 6 plants, branches of 5 plants, seeds of 3 plants, fruits of 3 plants, aerial parts of 2 plants, fruit exocarp of 2 plants, and root of 1 plant were determined to be used for different purposes. In addition, local names and ethnobotanical aspects of totally 17 taxa (26.5 %) were presented firstly in this study. East Anatolia is a very important region of Turkey in terms of plant diversity, and many studies have been conducted on the traditional uses of plants; but, the least have been carried out in Erzincan province. Because of that, this study was conducted in the area.

Spawning and Larval Rearing in Hybrid Striped Bass (Morone chrysops ♀ X Morone saxatilis ♂) in Turkey

Guner, Yusuf; Kizak, Volkan; Altunok, Muhammet; Celik, Ihsan

This study is the first spawning and larval rearing of the F-1 hybrid striped bass (Morone chrysops female X M. saxatilis male) grown in culture conditions in Turkey. The F-1 Hybrid striped bass was fed with commercial pellet feed in floating net cages. They reached the sexual maturity at two years old. Female brood fish were given 30 mu g/kg of LHRH-a (Lutenizing hormone releasing hormone analogue) and male fish given 10 mu g/kg; of CHP(Dried carp pituitary), 4 mg/kg was used for the female and half that amount for the male for induced breeding. The fish injected LHRHa were successfully induced to both strip spawning and tank spawning by a single hormone injection. However, fish injected CPH and saline, untreated control did not spawn. Latency period was found to be 20.41 +/- 0.91 hour. In term of fertilization rate, larval deformity rate no significant difference was found between tank spawning and strip spawning (p>0.05). Fertilization rates ranged from 56.3% to 85.4% and hatch rates were between 0.99% and 46.88%, whereas the level of larval deformities ranged between 81.25% and 100%. Hatched larvae were placed into 400-liter rectangular tanks with water discharge of 4 liter/minute at a stocking density of 30 larvae/liter. After larvae hatching, they were given artemia nauplii for 5-19 days. Trout granule feed (300-500 micron) also started to be given in addition to artemia nauplii afterwards. Granule feed was started eating completely 24 th days. The larvae obtained from a single hatch in the production season reached 2.87 cm length in 32 days with 2.7% survival rate. Of this study was terminated due to white spot disease (Ichtyophthirius multifilis) arising from sudden change in water temperature. The F-2 progenies were not deemed to be available for aquaculture due to poor fertilization, poor hatching, low survival rate and high deformity rate. For the progenies of the hybrid striped bass that grow in natural water, it was suggested that their ecology in waters in Turkey be first studied and brought into aquaculture afterwards.

Binuclear cyanido complexes containing [Pt(CN)4]2- building block: Synthesis, crystal structures, magnetic properties and anticancer activities

Korkmaz, Sengul Asian; Karadag, Ahmet; Aydin, Ali; Yerli, Yusuf; Soylu, Mustafa Serkan

Five new complexes of composition [Ni(N-bishydeten)Pt(CN)(4)] (1), [Ni(N-bishydeten)(2)][Pt(CN)(4)] (2), [Cu (N-bishydeten)Pt(CN)(4)] (3), [Cu(N-bishydeten)(2)][Pt(CN)(4)] (4) and [Cd(N-bishydeten)(2)][Pt(CN)(4)] (5) (N-bishydeten = N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-ethylenediamine) have been obtained and characterized by IR and EPR spectroscopies, elemental and thermal analysis and magnetic measurements. X-ray studies of 2 and 3 exhibited different structures and two different coordination modes of N-bishydeten ancillary ligand with a ratio of M:L. While N-bishydeten acts as a tetradentate with N', N', O and O' atoms in a molar ratio of 1:1 formed 2,2-CT-type zigzag chain for 3, it behaves tridentate ligand by ending up with six coordinated Ni-II center in a complex salt by using 1:2 M ratio for 2. None of the 1 and 3 complexes produced in this study showed sufficient anticancer activity but all did exhibit apoptotic properties and one of them also performed low cytotoxic activity against cell tested. Erguven, G. Onder; Bayhan, Hurrem; Demir, Goksel; Ikizoglu, Bahar; Kanat, Gurdal

Aclonifen was used as the most preferable type of herbicide which is used in sunflower farming in the Thrace Region. Bacteria and fungi were isolated from the soil samples taken from the Thrace Region, and a mixed culture was prepared from equal volumes (10(8) CFU/mL) of liquid cultures of microorganisms. Including the witness sample, five different setups were prepared, to which Aclonifen, with a concentration of 1900 mu g/L, was added. Each unit was diluted with distilled water for six weeks. The water filtered at this stage was measured for chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand, total organic carbon (TOC), and Aclonifen. Additionally, pH and dissolved oxygen measurement was performed. According to the results of the study, the highest bioremediation was observed in the soil sample to which 10 mL of mixed culture of microorganisms was added and Aclonifen, COD, BOD5, and TOC remediation was observed as 93.2%, 97.8%, 98.8%, and 98.7%, respectively.

    Baskonus, Haci Mehmet; Bulut, Hasan

In this study, a new method called improved Bernoulli sub-equation function method has been proposed. This method is based on the Bernoulli sub-ODE method. After we mention the general properties of proposed method, we apply this algorithm to the (2+1)-dimensional Boiti-Leon-Pempinelli equation system. This gives us some new prototype solutions such as exponential and rational function solutions. Then, we have plotted two- and three-dimensional surfaces of analytical solutions. Finally, we have submitted a comprehensive conclusion.

The effects of sebum configuration on Demodex spp. density

Demirdag, Hatice Gamze; Özcan, Hamdi; Gürsoy, Sule; Beker Akbulut, Gulcin

Background/aim: Demodex spp. are ectoparasites living in the pilosebaceous units, which feed on the host's sebum and cellular proteins. The protective barrier of the skin consists of sebum secretion, moisture, and the acid mantle. In this study, we aimed to determine the effects of skin sebum, moisture, pH levels, and sebum configuration on Demodex spp. density Materials and methods: Forty-five patients who had demodicosis were enrolled in the study group, while the control group consisted of 40 subjects without demodicosis. Body fat percentage, serum triglyceride and cholesterol levels, skin sebum, moisture, and pH levels were measured. Demodex spp. density was determined with a standardized skin surface biopsy. Sebum samples were taken from the forehead and a high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) method was performed on these samples. Subsequently, densitometric analyses were applied to the HPTLC plates. Results: Demodex spp. were found on the cheeks and lived in an alkali environment. Skin sebum and moisture levels were low in all groups. The skin pH levels and cholesterol ester in the sebum configuration were determined to be significantly higher in the group with demodicosis. Conclusion: We suggest that Demodex spp. may use cholesterol ester in the sebum as nutriment. In other words, cholesterol ester may be a suitable growth medium for the proliferation of Demodex spp.

Ethnopharmacological survey of medicinal plants in Ulukisla (Nigde-Turkey)

Paksoy, Mehmet Yavuz; Selvi, Selami; Sauran, Ahmet

This study aimed to identify wild plants collected for medicinal purposes by the local people of Ulukisla County, located in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey and to establish the uses and local names of these plants. A field study was carried out over a period of approximately 2 years (2002-2003). During this period, 59 vascular plant specimens were collected. Demographic characteristics of participants, local plant names, plant parts used and preparation methods of the plants were investigated and recorded. Within the scope of the study, the plant species were collected; herbarium materials were prepared; and the plant specimens were named. In addition, the relative importance value of the species was determined and was calculated for the medicinal plants included in the study. A total of 59 medical plants belonging to 27 families were identified in the region. The most common families were Lamiaceae, Rosaceae, Asteraceae, Poaceae and Apiaceae. This study identified not only the wild plants collected for medical purposes by local people of Ulukisla County in the Central Anatolia Region, but also the uses and local names of these plants. Comparison of the data obtained in this study from the plants growing in Ulukisla with the experimental data obtained in previous laboratory studies showed mostly the same ethnobotanical usages. The plant flora of Ulukisla is threatened by such factors as grazing, expansion of new agricultural lands, and unsustainable picking of plants to generate income. Steps should be taken immediately to ensure the inclusion of relevant flora within conservation designations. Published by Elsevier GmbH.

Steady, dynamic, creep/recovery, and textural properties of yoghurt/molasses blends: Temperature sweep tests and applicability of Cox-Merz rule

Eroglu, Ali; Bayrambas, Kadir; Eroglu, Zeynep; Toker, Omer S.; Yilmaz, Mustafa T.; Karaman, Safa; Dogan, Mahmut

In this study, physicochemical, rheological (steady, dynamic, and creep/recovery), and textural properties of yoghurt/molasses blends (0, 5, 10, and 15% molasses) were investigated. The blends showed shear thinning behavior, as described by Ostwald de Waele model (R-2 >= 0.955). Consistency coefficient value (K) of the blends decreased with increasing molasses concentration in the sample. Storage modulus (G') of blends was higher than loss modulus (G ''), exhibiting weak gel-like behavior. Molasses addition decreased G' and G '' values. Temperature sweep tests indicated that blends followed Arrhenius relationship. A modified Cox-Merz rule was applicable using shift factors. Compliance values (J(t)) increased as molasses concentration increased, revealing that deformation stability and internal viscosity (eta(1)) decreased with concentration. Creep behavior was characterized using Burger model. Obtained J data as a function of time could be satisfactorily fitted to Burger model (R-2 >= 0.994). The final percentage recovery of blends remarkably decreased with the increase of molasses concentration. Firmness, consistency, cohesiveness, and viscosity index values decreased with molasses addition. According to the results of the current study, molasses amount to be added to the yoghurt should be determined regarding rheological properties since resistance of the sample to deformation decreased with increase in molasses concentration.

New wave behaviors of the system of equations for the ion sound and Langmuir Waves

    Baskonus, Haci Mehmet; Bulut, Hasan

This manuscript focuses on the new wave behaviors of the system of equations for the ion sound wave under the action of the ponderomotive force which results from a nonlinear force that a charged particle experiences in an inhomogeneous oscillating electromagnetic field due to high-frequency field. The sine-Gordon expansion method which is one of the powerful methods has been considered for finding traveling wave solutions of the system of equations for the ion sound wave under the pressure of the Langmuir wave. This algorithm yields new complex hyperbolic function solutions to the system considered in this paper. Wolfram Mathematica 9 has been successfully used throughout the paper for mathematical calculations.

Cultural perceptions and clinical experiences of nursing students in Eastern Turkey

    Karatay, G.; Bowers, B.; Karadag, E. B.; Demir, M. C.

Aim: This study explored Turkish nursing students' perceptions of providing care to patients culturally different from themselves. Background: Increasing migration will increase the need for nurses to provide care across cultural groups. Methods: Twenty one students in the second year of a 4-year nursing programme participated in 3 focus groups. Data were analysed using directed content analysis. Research questions were based on Campinha-Bacote's model. Results: Three themes were identified: perceived cultural barriers, perceived cultural facilitators and identifying culturally sensitive actions. Generally, students were able to define culture but were unable to say how culture would affect nursing practice. Discussion: Students were unprepared to practice in a multicultural setting. Cultural awareness is insufficient for determining how to respond to cultural differences. Limitations: The study is limited by its restriction to a single school of nursing and a single curriculum. Conclusions: The multiple, ongoing political, religious and ethnic conflicts will require nurses to provide care to patients from other cultural groups, in some instances to people identified as adversaries to the group the nurse may represent. Understanding cultural differences is insufficient to do this effectively. Implications for nursing education: Learning culturally competent care requires opportunities to provide, be guided through and reflect on care to individuals from different cultural groups. Implications for organizational and public policies: Standards for culturally competent care should be adopted by all care delivery settings. Public and organizational policies openly declaring healthcare settings as cultural safe zones, and explicit organizational commitment to culturally safe care, would set clear expectations for providers and help ensure a positive patient experience.

Immunological biomarkers reflect the effects of exposure to environmental contaminants. In this study, the suitability and sensitivity of cytokine responses, interleukin 1 beta (IL-1 beta), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) in gill tissues of Capoeta umbla (Heckel, 1843), collected from different regions, as early warning indices of environmental pollution and ecosystem health was evaluated. Fish and water samples were taken from ten stations in March and September 2011 and 2012. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha, IL-1 beta and IL-6 levels were determined in samples of the gill tissues by using an ELISA kit. Significant variations of TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta and IL-6 levels observed between stations and seasons. The results of this study show that seasonal variations of cytokine responses in gills of Capoeta umbla are sensitive to the contaminants present in Uzuncayir Dam Lake (Tunceli, Turkey) water and are valuable biomarkers for environmental pollution and ecosystem health.

Switched reluctance motor control without position sensor by using data obtained from finite element method in artificial neural network

Polat, Mehmet; Oksuztepe, Eyyup; Kurum, Hasan

Switched reluctance motors (SRMs) require sensitive rotor information in order to work sensitively and properly and especially for the commutation of phase currents. Position information is generally acquired from a sensor which is generally placed into the stator or connected to the rotor. However, sensors have disadvantages in terms of cost, safety, complexity and volume. In order to remove these disadvantages, recent studies concentrate on SRMs working without a position sensor. In this study control methods working without a position sensor are examined, the applied method is presented comprehensively. The education and test data of the artificial neural network is not obtained from simulation or experimental results; it is obtained from magnetic analyses carried out in ANSYS 10 and the results are used in position speed and current sensorless control of SRM. The validity of proposed method is demonstrated by using DS 1103.

The capacity of some newly bacteria and fungi for biodegradation of herbicide trifluralin under agiated culture media

    Erguven, G. O.; Bayhan, H.; Ikizoglu, B.; Kanat, G.; Nuhoglu, Y.

Bioremediation is the use of microorganisms to degrade environmental contaminants (pesticides, polyaromatic hydrocarbons etc.) into less toxic forms or compounds. In this study microbial biodegradation of trifluralin was performed in liquid media with 11 different types of identified fungi and bacteria cultures and their mixtures in agiated culture media. The isolated fungi and bacteria mixtures showed the highest degradation, reaching 93% in the chemical oxygen demand (COD) parameter in four days and 82% as trifluralin active ingredient in five days. Bacteria and fungi mixtures achieved 69% and 66% degradations of trifluralin active ingredient respectively. In the fungi studies, the best removal was achieved by M. Chlamydosporia at 80%, in the bacteria studies, the best removal was achieved by Bacillus simplex about 95% in five days. These different removal rates were due to the microbial differencies.

Chronic exposure of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) to iron oxide nanoparticles: Effects of particle morphology on accumulation, elimination, hematology and immune responses

Ates, Mehmet; Demir, Veysel; Arslan, Zikri; Kaya, Hasan; Yilmaz, Sevdan; Camas, Mustafa

Effects of chronic exposure to alpha and gamma iron oxide nanoparticles (alpha-Fe2O3 and gamma-Fe2O3 NPs) were investigated through exposure of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) to 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mg/L (9.2 x 10(-4), 4.6 x 10(-3) and 9.2 x 10(-3) mM) aqueous suspensions for 60 days. Fish were then transferred to NP-free freshwater and allowed to eliminate ingested NPs for 30 days. The organs, including gills, liver, kidney, intestine, brain, spleen, and muscle tissue of the fish were analyzed to determine the accumulation, physiological distribution and elimination of the Fe2O3 NPs. Largest accumulation occurred in spleen followed by intestine, kidney, liver, gills, brain and muscle tissue. Fish exposed to gamma-Fe2O3 NPs possessed significantly higher Fe in all organs. Accumulation in spleen was fast and independent of NP concentration reaching to maximum levels by the end of the first sampling period (30th day). Dissolved Fe levels in water were very negligible ranging at 4-6 mu g/L for alpha-Fe2O3 and 17-21 mu g/L for gamma-Fe2O3 NPs (for 1 mg/L suspensions). Despite that, Fe levels in gills and brain reflect more dissolved Fe accumulation from metastable gamma-Fe2O3 polymorph. Ingested NPs cleared from the organs completely within 30-day elimination period, except the liver and spleen. Liver contained about 31% of alpha- and 46% of gamma-Fe2O3, while spleen retained about 62% of alpha- and 35% of the gamma-polymorph. No significant disturbances were observed in hematological parameters, including hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cell and white blood cell counts (p > 0.05). Serum glucose (GLU) levels decreased in treatments exposed to 1.0 mg/L of gamma-Fe2O3 NPs at day 30 (p < 0.05). In contrast, GLU levels increased during the elimination period for 1.0 mg/L alpha-Fe2O3 NPs treatments (p < 0.05). Transient increases occurred in glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). Serum Fe levels did not change during exposure (p > 0.05), but increased significantly within elimination period due to mobilization of ingested NPs from liver and spleen to blood. Though respiratory burst activity was not affected (p > 0.05), lysozyme activity (LA) was suppressed suggesting an immunosuppressive effects from both Fe2O3 NPs (p < 0.05). In contrast, myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels increased significantly in treatments exposed to alpha-Fe2O3 NPs (p < 0.05), and the effect from gamma-polymorph was marginal (p > 0.05). The results indicate that morphological differences of Fe2O3 NPs could induce differential uptake, assimilation and immunotoxic effects on O. niloticus under chronic exposure. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Characterization of hot pressed CuAl-TiC composites with different TiC grain sizes

    Islak, S.; Çelik, E.; Kir, D.; Özorak, C.

In this study, the CuAl-TiC composite materials were produced using hot pressing process. Effect of TiC grain size (0.2, 4 and 20 mu m) on some properties of these materials was investigated experimentally. Production of CuAl-TiC composites was carried out under pressure of 35 MPa, at 700A degrees C, and for a sintering time of 5 minutes. SEM-MAP studies showed that the TiC grains were relatively homogeneously distributed in the CuAl matrix. Microstructure analysis revealed that the composite materials consist of Cu, Al, Cu9Al4, CuAl2 and TiC phases. With the decreasing of TiC grain size, the hardness, transverse rupture strength, relative density and sintered density of composites increased.

Evaluation of microbiological quality of sushi sold in restaurants and supermarkets in turkey

Cadun, Asli; Sen Yilmaz, E. Burcu; Demirtas, Nida; Vongkamjan, Kitiya

Sushi is a popular traditional Japanese food in worldwide. This study was conducted to investigate the physical, chemical, sensory and microbiological quality of sushi sold in supermarket and restaurants. 300 sushi samples were purchased from 5 different popular restaurants (A, B, D, E, and F) and 1 supermarket (C). Four main types of sushi (California roll (CR), sesame roll (SMR), sake roll (SR), take roll (TR)) were chosen from each station. pH values of sushi rice samples were found to be all below 4.6. According to sensory overall quality of sushi samples, CR and SMR from station C had significantly the lowest values (p<0.05). Among the sushi samples, pathogenic bacteria Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus were not detected in 25 g portion of any samples. Counts of total aerobic bacteria were high in stations A, B, D, E, and F (between 4.3-7 log CFU/g), except for station C (3.5 log CFU/g). Results for coliform counts showed similar trends as those of E. coli counts in samples. E. coli counts of all sushi types from all stations (except SMR, SR and TR from station D and SR from station E) exceeded the limit of acceptability (<100 MPN/g). Our finding may suggest a common presence of coliforms and E. coli in raw materials used in sushi preparation.
