Application of interval type-2 fuzzy sets DEMATEL methods in maritime transportation: The case of ship collision

    Celik, E.; Akyuz, E.

Accident analyse in marine industry is one of the critical issues for safety practitioners to prevent loss of life. Although considerable efforts were undertaken to prevent marine accident, numerous researches revealed that marine accidents are still on-going. In order to minimize accidents in the marine transportation, this paper presents a proactive decisionmaking tool which is integrating Decision-Making Trail and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method with interval type-2 fuzzy sets (IT2FSs). As the DEMATEL enables to analyse cause and effect relationship in decision-making, the IT2FSs overcome ambiguity and vagueness of linguistic assessment of decision-makers through the DEMATEL. Thus, significant accident causal factors and their effects can be analysed on the basis of cause-effect diagram. The application of proposed approach is demonstrated with a real ship collision case. Beside its theoretical contribution, the proposed approach provides practical benefits to ship owners and operators to perceive cause and effect relationship and to avoid marine accident.

A solution approach based on beam search algorithm for disassembly line balancing problem

Mete, Süleyman; Çil, Zeynel Abidin; Ağpak, Kürşad; Özceylan, Eren; Dolgui, Alexandre

The disassembly line balancing (DLB) problem is the process of allocating a set of disassembly tasks to an ordered sequence of workstations in such a way that optimizes some performance measures (e.g., cycle time, number of stations). Since DLB problems belong to the class of NP hard, many heuristic and meta-heuristic algorithms are applied to cope with the complexity of the DLB problems in order to obtain acceptable solutions in a reasonable amount of time. In this study, a beam search (BS) based approach for the DLB problem is proposed. Minimization of number of workstations is used as the performance measure. The proposed algorithm is compared with the optimal solutions of well-known real cases and generated test problems. The results indicate that the proposed approach based on BS is a very competitive and promising tool for further researches.

Geochemistry of the metavolcanic rocks from the Çangaldağ complex in the central pontides: Implications for the middle jurassic arc-back-arc system in the neotethyan intra-pontide ocean

Çimen, Okay; Göncüoğlu, M. Cemal; Sayit, Kaan

The Cangaldağ Complex in northern central Turkey is one of the main tectonic units of the Central Pontide Structural Complex that represents the remains of the poorly known Intra-Pontide branch of the Neotethys. It comprises low-grade metamorphic rocks of intrusive, extrusive, and volcaniclastic origin displaying a wide range of felsic to mafic compositions. Petrographically the complex consists of basalts-andesites-rhyodacites and tuffs with minor amount of gabbros and diabases. On the basis of geochemistry, the Cangaldağ samples are of subalkaline character and represented by both primitive and evolved members. All rock types are variably depleted in Nb compared to LREEs, similar to the lavas from subduction-related tectonic settings. In N-MORB normalized plots, the primitive members are separated into 3 groups on the basis of levels of enrichment. The first group is highly depleted and displays characteristics of boninitic lavas. The second group is relatively enriched compared to the first group but still more depleted than N-MORB. The third group, however, is the most enriched one among the three, whose level of enrichment is around that of N-MORB. The overall geochemical features suggest that the Cangaldağ Complex has been generated with the involvement of a subductionmodified mantle source. The chemistry of the primitive members further indicates that the melts generated for the formation of the Cangaldağ Complex probably occurred in both arc and back-arc regions above an intraoceanic subduction within the Intra-Pontide branch of the Neotethys.

A fuzzy DEMATEL method to evaluate critical operational hazards during gas freeing process in crude oil tankers

    Akyuz, Emre; Celik, Erkan

Gas freeing process in crude oil tanker ships is widely recognized one of the most hazardous aspects of shipboard operations. Although the process provides practical benefits to ship by removing the explosive or poisonous gases from the cargo tanks and raising the oxygen level up to 21 percent, the consequences of failure may cause serious damage to human health, marine environment and cargo. Therefore, the crew exercise utmost care and become aware of the potential hazards in gas freeing process. In this context, this paper provides a fuzzy DEMATEL (Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory) method to evaluate critical operational hazards in gas freeing process. While the DEMATEL method enables to identify and analyse the potential hazards of gas freeing process with respect to causal effect relation diagram, fuzzy sets deal with the uncertainty in decision-making and human judgements through the DEMATEL. Thus, the hybrid approach provides smart solution for safety practitioners to prevent critical hazards in gas freeing process. The results of the research will contribute to maritime safety at sea and prevention of environment pollution as well as loss of life on-board crude oil tankers ships. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Kutluyer, Filiz; Ögretmen, Fatih; Inanan, Burak Evren

BACKGROUND: Amino acids protect spermatozoa against cell damage during cryopreservation due to have antioxidant property and found in seminal plasma at high concentration. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present work was to analyse the effect of extender supplementation with L-methionine on post-thawed sperm motility, duration and DNA damage and also it was tested the feasibility of using straws and pellets method for the cryopreservation of goldfish (Carassius auratus) sperm. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Extenders were supplemented with different L-methionine concentrations of 1 mM; 1.5 mM; 3 mM; 6 mM. Semen samples diluted at the ratio of 1:9 by the extenders were subjected to cryopreservation. After dilution the semen was aspirated into 0.25 ml straws and 0.1 ml pellets, the straws and pellets were placed on the tray, frozen in nitrogen vapor and plunged into liquid nitrogen. DNA damage was determined with comet assay after cryopreservation.. RESULTS: Our results indicated that an increase in the concentration of L-methionine caused a significant increase in the motility rate and duration of sperm in goldfish (C. auratus) (p<0.05). In addition, duration and percentage of motility in pellets were higher than in straws. Comparing all concentrations of L-methionine, the best concentration of L-methionine was 1.5 mM. Highest post-thaw motility (45.00 +/- 7.07%) and duration of motility (17.00 +/- 0.71s) were obtained with the extender at concentration 1.5 mM in pellets. Addition of the extender with L-methionine was reduced DNA damage compared to control group. CONCLUSION: Consequently, pellets could be use for goldfish sperm cryopreservation and the tested amino acid affected the motility parameters, and semen extenders could be supplement with L-methionine.

Mutlu, Ekrem; Aydin, Seyit; Kutlu, Banu

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of copper sulfate (CuSO4(5 H2O)) on the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Median (LC50) and minimum (LC1O) lethal concentrations of copper sulfate on Nile tilapia were determined via acute tests. LC50 values of copper sulfate for the 48th, 72nd and 96th hours were 13.15, 12.95 and 12.85 mg/L, respectively. LC10 values of 12, 11 and 9.5 mg/L were obtained for similar exposure periods (48th, 72nd and 96th hours), respectively. The effects of 1.5 mg/L dose of copper sulfate on growth rate, gross clinical observations and blood biochemical parameters of Nile tilapia were evaluated after 35, 65 and 95 days of exposure periods. The differences of growth rates between control and copper sulfate-exposed groups were not significant (P>0.05) at the end of 35, 65 and 95 days. Continuous exposure of Nile tilapia to 1.5 mg/L concentration of copper sulfate in water solution for three periods (35, 65 and 95 days) decreased the total protein, albumin, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), glucose (except the elevation in the exposed group at the end of 95 days period), magnesium (Mg+2), calcium (Ca+2), iron (Fe+2), potassium (K+), sodium (Na+1), chloride (Cl-) and phosphate values in serum. The cholesterol, low density lipid (LDL), triglyceride, globulin, creatinine, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, uric acid and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentrations in the serum increased in copper sulfate-exposed fish.

Capacity of a newly isolated fungus Pleurotus eryngii from Tunceli, Ovacik for chemical oxygen demand reduction and biodecolorization of Azo-Dye Congo Red

    Yildirim, N.; Gonen, U.

Biodecolorization of Congo red dye in both agar-plate and agitated liquid culture mediums by newly isolated white rot fungus Pleurotus eryngii has been studied. This fungus isolated from Tunceli-Ovacik province of Turkey. We have also examined the chemical oxygen demand reduction after decolorization under agitated liquid culture medium. For agar plate screening the decolorization capacity of P. eryngii, growth and decolorization halos were determined on saboroud dextrose agar (SDA) plates containing 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1 and 2 g/l of Congo red. P. eryngii showed certain decolorization capacities and was able to decolorize all studied concentrations of Congo red, but not to the same extent. Our results indicated that the new isolate P. eryngii had maximum decolorization (87% at 100 mg/l initial dye concentration) and chemical oxygen demand reduction (82% at 25 mg/l initial dye concentration) activities after 7 days under agitated submerged culture conditions. This new isolate could be an effective bioremediation tool for treatment of Congo red containing textile wastewater.

EVALUATING THE DILUTION OF MUNICIPAL WASTEWATER ON BIOMASS INCREASE, LIPID PRODUCTION AND NUTRIENT REMOVAL BY THE BLUE-GREEN ALGAE Spirulina platensis (Geitler)

Can, Safak Seyhaneyildiz; Demir, Veysel; Can, Erkan

Wastewater generated daily in urban localities could provide nourishment to algae for potential production of biofuel and biochemicals. This study presents an integrated approach to the use of Spirulina platensis cultures for the treatment of domestic wastewater and lipid extraction. In this experimental approach, wastewater subjected only to the primary settling process was used as nutrient media at different concentrations of 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25% wastewater diluted with distilled water, and Spirulina platensis was cultured in these mediums for 20 days. The inoculated medium was incubated at 30 degrees C in the presence of light (42 mu mol photon m(-2).s(-1)) by using light/dark cycle of 12 hours. S. platensis consumed nitrite, nitrate, phosphate and ammonium from wastewater, and it increased its biomass and its lipid amount. Although the highest biomass increase was observed at the wastewater medium without dilution (100% wastewater) (the control group was not included), the highest lipid production was found in 25% wastewater. On the other hand, the percent reduction in the level of nitrite, nitrate, phosphate and ammonium in 75% wastewater medium was 91%, 99%, 99% and 99%, respectively. Despite the low lipid content, since Spirulina platensis can live in harsh conditions and increase its biomass rapidly, they can be easily cultivated in wastewater. Therefore, their use in wastewater for biodiesel production was found appropriate. The resulting algae biomass after oil extraction can be also used in different industrial sectors.

A Time Series Approach for Precipitation in Turkey

    Balibey, Mesut; Türkyilmaz, Serpil

The climate that has a dynamic structure varies continuously. Basic climatological features of any region depend on many meteorological variables, such as precipitation and temperature records. The changes in these two variables reveal important clues about climate variations. Turkey is one of the sensitive areas for climate variation around the world. In this study, statistical analysis is applied to historical data set consisted of monthly precipitation totals (mm.) which are provided by the Turkish State Meteorological Service(TSMS) for 1999-2010 period in Turkey. Furthermore, a sinusoidal model for each region obtained by using a time series method is proposed in order to obtain a sinusoidal form for the precipitation to each region. Besides a basic form of Frequency Domain Techniques, usual Box-Jenkins ARIMA approach is applied in this study. In conclusion, it is observed that the sinusoidal model predictions are more appropriate than ARIMA techniques and usual generalized linear model (GLM) techniques.

Optimization of lipase production on agro-industrial residue medium by Pseudomonas fluorescens (NRLL B-2641) using response surface methodology

Tanyol, Mehtap; Uslu, Gulsad; Yönten, Vahap

The aim of our research was to explore the most cost-efficient and optimal medium composition for the production of lipase from Pseudomonas fluorescens (NRLL B-2641) culture grown on sunflower oil cake (SuOC) by applying response surface methodology (RSM). The oil cake was used instead of carbon sources. Peptone, ammonium sulphate and the carbon source (SuOC) were the most important factors as it is obligatory for microbial growth. Subsequently, the optimum values for the carbon source, peptone and ammonium sulphate were found to be 11.10% (w/v), 1.18% (w/v) and 0.83% (w/v), respectively. Experiments carried out under optimum conditions revealed a maximum lipase activity of 10.8 U mL(-1), which was achieved after 48 h of fermentation. The obtained results were finally verified with batch experiments carried out under the optimum conditions evaluated and it was demonstrated that the SuOC from agro-industrial residue as substrates can be used as an inexpensive base (carbon source) for the production of lipase by P. fluorescens (NRLL B-2641).

Aksu, Onder; Yildirim, Nuran Cikcikoglu; Yildirim, Numan; Danabas, Durali; Danabas, Seval

The discharge of textile effluents into the environment without appropriate treatment poses a serious threat for the aquatic organisms. The present study was undertaken to investigate biochemical response of crayfish Astacus leptodactylus exposed to textile wastewater (TW) treated by indigenous white rot fungus Coriolus versicolor. Glutathione S-transferase (GST), cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1), and acetylcholinesterase (AchE) levels in hepatopancreas and abdomen tissues of crayfish exposed to untreated, treated, and diluted rates (1/10) in both TW during 24 and 96 h were tested. Physiochemical parameters (electrical conductivity (EC), chemical oxygen demand (COD), pH, and total dissolved solid (TDS)) of TW were determined before and after treatment. Physiochemical parameters of TW decreased after treatment. The GST activity and AchE were generally increased, but CYP1A1 activity was decreased in hepatopancreas tissue of crayfish exposed to different kinds of untreated TW. After treatment by indigenous white rot fungus (C. versicolor), GST and CYP1A1 activities were returned to control values, while AchE activities were increasing further. In this study, only GST and CYP1A1 activities of A. leptodactylus confirmed the efficiency of TW treatment with C. versicolor.

Removal of Phosphate from Aqueous Solutions by Chemical- and Thermal-Modified Bentonite Clay

Tanyol, Mehtap; Yonten, Vahap; Demir, Veysel

The study investigated phosphate adsorption from aqueous solutions using chemical- and thermal-modified bentonite in batch system. The adsorbent was characterized by SEM, BET, and FTIR spectroscopy. Contact time, beginning phosphate concentration, pH of the solution, and the effects of the temperature on phosphate adsorption capacity were determined by a series of experimental studies. In a wide pH range (3-10), high phosphate removal yields were obtained (between 94.23 and 92.26 %), and with the increase in temperature (from 25 to 45 degrees C), phosphate removal increased. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were used to determine the sorption equilibrium, and the results demonstrated that equilibriumdata displayed better adjustment to Langmuir isotherm than the Freundlich isotherm. Phosphate sorption capacity, calculated using Langmuir equation, is 20.37 mg g(-1) at 45 degrees C temperature and pH 3. Mass transfer and kinetic models were applied to empirical findings to determine the mechanism of adsorption and the potential steps that control the reaction rate. Both external mass transfer and intra-particle diffusion played a significant role on the adsorption mechanism of phosphate, and adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order-type kinetic. Furthermore, thermodynamic parameters (Delta H degrees, Delta G degrees, Delta S degrees) which reveal that phosphate adsorption occur spontaneously and in endothermic nature were determined. The results of this study support that bentonite, which is found abundant in nature and modified as an inexpensive and effective adsorbent, could be used for phosphate removal from aqueous solutions.

Rutin attenuates gentamicin-induced renal damage by reducing oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, and autophagy in rats

Kandemir, Fatih Mehmet; Ozkaraca, Mustafa; Yildirim, Betul Apaydin; Hanedan, Basak; Kirbas, Akin; Kilic, Kubra; Aktas, Esra; Benzer, Fulya

Gentamicin is commonly used against gram-negative microorganisms. Its therapeutic use is mainly limited by nephrotoxicity. This study was aimed at evaluating the effect of rutin on oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, and autophagy in gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. The rats were treated with saline intraperitoneally (group I), 150 mg/kg of rutin orally (group II), 80 mg/kg of gentamicin intraperitoneally for 8 d (group III), or 150 mg/kg of rutin plus 80 mg/kg of gentamicin (group IV). The serum urea, creatinine, kidney malondialdehyde (MDA), and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels and superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity and protein concentration were measured, and renal histopathology analysis and immunohistochemical staining were performed. Rutin pretreatment attenuated nephrotoxicity induced by gentamicin by reducing the urea, creatinine, and MDA levels and increasing the SOD, CAT, and GPx activity, and the GSH levels. The rutin also inhibited inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cleaved caspase-3 and light chain 3B (LC3B), as evidenced by immunohistochemical staining. The present study demonstrates that rutin exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and anti-autophagic effects and that it attenuates gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats.

Arginase activity and total oxidant/antioxidant capacity in cows with lung cystic echinococcosis

Hanedan, Basak; Kirbas, Akin; Kandemir, F. Mehmet; Ozkaraca, Mustafa; Kilic, Kubra; Benzer, Fulya

The aim of this study was to investigate arginase activity, total oxidant capacity (TOC), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and oxidative stress index (OSI) in cows with lung cystic echinococcosis (CE). The subjects were 20 cows with lung CE (parasitized group) and 20 healthy cows (control group). A significant increase in arginase activity, TOC, and OSI, and a significant decrease in TAC were found in the parasitized group compared with the control group (P < 0.001). Histopathological examination revealed a fibrous tissue reaction with inflammatory cell infiltration surrounding the CE in the lungs. The study revealed that increased arginase activity, TOC, and OSI levels and decreased TAC levels occurred in lung CE in cows. Increased arginase activity may be an important parameter for pulmonary fibrosis associated with lung CE in cows. Oxidant production due to chronic inflammation, as evidenced by the increased OSI levels, might contribute to persistent lung injury.

Effect of semen extender supplementation with cysteine on postthaw sperm quality, DNA damage, and fertilizing ability in the common carp (Cyprinus carpio)

Ögretmen, Fatih; Inanan, Burak Evren; Kutluyer, Filiz; Kayim, Murathan

Amino acids have an important biological role for prevention of cell damage during cryopreservation. The objective of this study is to determine the effects of cysteine on postthaw sperm motility, duration of sperm motility, DNA damage, and fertility in the common carp (Cyprinus carpio). Sperm collected from 10 individuals was cryopreserved in extenders containing different cysteine concentrations (2.5, 5, 10, and 20 mM). Semen samples diluted at the ratio of 1:9 by the extenders were subjected to cryopreservation. After dilution, the semen was aspirated into 0.25-mL straws; the straws were placed on the tray, frozen in nitrogen vapor, and plunged into liquid nitrogen. DNA damage was evaluated by comet assay after cryopreservation. Our results indicated that an increase in the concentration of cysteine caused a significant increase in the motility rate and duration of sperm in the common carp (C carpio; P < 0.05). Comparing all concentrations of cysteine, the best concentration of cysteine was 20 mM. Higher postthaw motility (76.00 +/- 1.00%) and fertilization (97.00 +/- 1.73%) rates were obtained with the extender at the concentration of 20 mM. Supplementation of the extender with cysteine was increased the fertilization and hatching rate and decreased DNA damage. Consequently, cysteine affected the motility, fertilization, and DNA damage positively, and extenders could be supplemented with cysteine. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
