- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Evaluating the impact of firm size, firm age, international opportunity recognition, and business network on internationalisation performance
Ataman, Göksel; Platin, Nida
This study examines the cumulative impact of firm size, firm age, business network participation, and international opportunity recognition on the internationalisation performance of small and medium- sized enterprises (SMEs). The study population consists of 160 SMEs in the Kayseri, Inegöl, and Istanbul Organized Furniture Industry area, specifically focusing on those involved in business networks. The data was collected through a survey methodology, and the research objective was assessed using a quantitative approach in SPSS 21. The study aims to examine the gradual impact of variables on internationalisation performance. The stepwise regression in the analysis underscores the crucial impact of firm size and various aspects of international opportunity recognition on internationalisation performance. Notably, the business network's structure positively influences performance, providing optimism for firms seeking to enhance their internationalisation efforts. However, the strength of the tie subdimension of the business network does not impact performance significantly. These findings offer valuable insights for firms aiming to improve their internationalisation efforts.

The purpose of this study is to reveal the digital game addiction from children’s perspective between the ages of 10 and 14 and how they are affected by digital games. In this context, the phenomenology pattern was adopted. Criterion sampling which is one of the purposeful sampling methods was chosen in the selection of participants. Data collected via individual interviews with 24 children who are included in the sampling were analyzed by using content analysis techniques. Findings showed that the majority of children liken digital game addiction to substance addiction. Children explained that digital games caused addiction because of the several factors such as completing mission, winning the game, passing to the next level and entertaining. It was concluded that digital games affect children academically, socially, physically and psychologically. Besides, while addicted children mostly expressed the effects of “increasing in tendency to violence”, non-addicted children also stated the effects of “entertainment”. It was determined that social isolation and the disruption of family relationships become prominent in the effects of digital games on children’s social life. Furthermore, children stated that digital games cause skeletal and muscular system disorders and weight gain as well as children mostly mentioned eye diseases among the physical effects of digital games.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2024Cross-dressing in contemporary british feminist theatre
Şentürk, Gamze
Sex and gender are two concepts that are often unconsciously used interchangeably, but they have distinct meanings. They are crucial in understanding the gender hierarchy or the distinction between man and woman created by the patriarchal order. While sex refers to a biological difference or an innate existence based on signs such as chromosomes and genitals, gender is a socio-cultural identity subsequently acquired through social interaction. While the biology-oriented approach reduces femininity and masculinity to the body based on an essentialist approach, the socio-culturally oriented approach underlines that femininity and masculinity are culturally constructed, fluid, and changeable. The gender roles assigned to man and woman in patriarchal society bring along certain expectations based on their sexes and their society’s values and beliefs about gender. The fact that both woman and man are expected to wear appropriate dress for their gender roles is the reflection of this expectation. When a man wears clothing traditionally associated with women or when a woman wears clothing traditionally associated with men, they might face ridicule or criticism because these clothing choices challenge established gender norms, and because the clothes are reminders of roles or symbols that favour social roles. Contrary to this, cross-dressing is described as an act of wearing clothes and accessories that belong to the opposite sex, and it is possible to see its examples as a deconstructive strategy in contemporary British feminist theatre. This article aims at discussing the functions of cross-dressing as a body memory in contemporary British feminist theatre over selected plays such as Caryl Churchill’s plays Cloud Nine (1979) and Top Girls (1982), Timberlake Wertenbaker’s New Anatomies (1984), and Moira Buffini’s Silence (1999).

İncele - MakaleYalnız künye2024Forced To Become Entrepreneurs: Investigating the Impact of Workplace Bullying on the Entrepreneurial Intentions of Immigrant Workers in Turkey
Uyan, Umut
Purpose: The issue of migrant workers has been frequently addressed in management and organiza- tion studies, as in many other fields since migration has become a global phenomenon. By referring to the push-pull theory of entrepreneurship, the current study aims to understand to what extent the bullying behavior that migrant workers are exposed to in the workplace encourages them to engage in entrepreneurship. The main assumption that constitutes the hypotheses is that negative workplace experiences push migrant workers to create alternatives against undesirable working conditions. Methodology: A quantitative research design was employed, involving standardized questionnaires to gather data from 231 migrant workers employed in Turkey’s textile sector. The hypotheses were tested using the AMOS statistical program. Findings: The findings support the bullying behavior that migrant workers are exposed to in their workplaces pushes them to become entrepreneurs (β= 0.36, p<.001). Further, the findings indicate that individual entrepreneurship orientation (IndEO) does not moderate the relationship mentioned (β = 0.03, p= .33). Originality: Unlike mainstream entrepreneurship literature, this study demonstrated that entrepre- neurship can be an ‘imperative’ stemming from unfavorable working conditions of migrant workers, rather than an ‘attractive’ phenomenon. Yet, the success and sustainability of such entrepreneurial activities is debatable. The study is expected to provide a clearer picture of migrant entrepreneurial initiatives and, therefore, guide policymakers in developing effective strategies to support economies.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024An Evaluation of the logistics Performance Index Using the ENTROPY-based ORESTE Method
Mete, Süleyman; Özdemir, Ümit; Çıray, Deniz
Logistics performance measurement has become increasingly important for countries as the competitive environment has increased. For this purpose, the World Bank has begun publishing logistics performance index (LPI) reports. The LPI ranking of countries is determined by the experts’ scoring system. By re-analyzing this scoring and reevaluating it without the need for expert opinion, this study analyzed the evaluation of country rankings according to criteria weights from several different angles. This study aims to provide a detailed analysis of the World Bank’s 2023 report using the ENTROPY-based ORESTE method, which has not previously been used in LPI evaluation and provides a more accurate and robust approach to the research. Although several studies have explored this similar topic in the literature, using a new method and comparing the criteria weights by including them in the analysis gave the present study a broader perspective. LPI analysis is an important tool for assessing and improving a country’s competitiveness, and it can help investors compare logistics infrastructure and processes across countries. This can help stakeholders to better plan and make direct investments. Logistics researchers can use the LPI to examine sectoral and economic trends and forecast future developments. Furthermore, the LPI can be used in academia to train and raise awareness about assessment, logistics, and supply chain management programs. This is an important resource for training future logistics professionals and managers and providing policymakers and practitioners with a more refined tool for identifying areas for improvement and investment in logistics infrastructure.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2024Investigation of tool wear and thrust force in drilling aisi 316 austenitic stainless steel using electrophoresis method
Mahmat, Aybars
Cutting tool costs are an important component of machining. For this reason, improving machining methods in machining affects the life of the cutting tool. Recently, various machining methods have been used to extend tool life by reducing cutting tool wear. One of these methods is electrophoresis-assisted processing. Electrophoresis-assisted machining is a non-traditional machining method created by the impact of abrasive nanoparticles on the machining area with the help of the generated electric field. Electrophoresis-assisted machining increases the machinability of difficult-to-machine materials with high strength and hardness properties compared to traditional machining methods. In this study, the impacts of various cutting parameters on the drilling performance of AISI 316 L stainless steel material were searched using electrophoresis-assisted drilling (EAD) and conventional drilling (CD) methods. In the study, SiC powder was used as nanoparticles in the solution obtained to create the electric field. Within the scope of the experiments, the effects of different machining methods, cutting speeds and feed rates on thrust forces and cutting tool wear values were experimentally examined. As a result of the investigations, the cutting tool wear and thrust cutting force obtained with EAD are better than CM. Increasing feed rate and cutting speed increased cutting tool wear in both machining methods. It has been determined that the thrust force decreases as the cutting speed increases, while it increases as the feed rate increases. Keywords: Electrophoresis, drilling, cutting force, tool wear, AISI 316
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Experimental Investigation of Rejuvenated Asphalt Mixtures Using Bio-Oils from Different Biomass Sources
Altundoğan, Hamdi Soner; Furtana, Beyza; Yılmaz, Mehmet
Asphalt mixes containing Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP) materials are generally harder than traditional mixes. Different rejuvenators are used to soften recycled asphalt pavement by reducing this hardness. In this study, recycled asphalt pavement was added to bituminous hot mixtures at 3 different rates (25%, 50% and 75%). To rejuvenate bituminous hot mixtures containing RAP, three different rejuvenators (pine cone, olive pomace and wheat straw) were added to the mixtures. This study investigated the effect of asphalt mixtures containing RAP and rejuvenator on the mechanical properties. Marshall test and moisture damage test were performed to examine the mechanical properties of asphalt mixture samples. As the bio-oil content in asphalt mixtures increases, the stability values of the mixtures decrease. As the bio-oil ratio in asphalt mixtures increases, tensile strength (TS) values decrease in both unconditioned and conditioned mixtures. While the increase in bio-oil reduces the tensile strength ratio, the shrinkage ratio of mixtures prepared with RAP increases. The bio-oil derived from pomace has been identified as the most effective rejuvenator among those tested.

Aslan, Naim; Aksakal, Bunyamin; Fidan, Ferzan
AISI 316L stainless steel (SS) is one of the most widely used biomaterials in the manufacture of implants and biomaterials. It has advantages over equivalent biomaterials such as low cost, good mechanical properties and biocompatibility. The pores found in porous biomaterials provide mechanical interlock, ensuring strong attachment of the implant to the tissue. In this study, 20%, 30% and 40% by volume of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and Boron powder were added into 316L powder to obtain porous SS implant. To investigate the effect of porosity and boron effect on the stainless-steel implant material, the samples produced in PVA and Boron added groups, were sintered at 1180 oC under an argon atmosphere. With the evaporation of PVA in the structure, porous and boron added samples were obtained in two groups. Finally, the samples were subjected to Brinell hardness and compression tests and analyzed by SEM, EDS and XRD. As a result of the hardness tests, the highest values were measured as 37.006, 31.32, 25.28 HB. 39.5, 34.5, 26.2 MPa strengths were measured for 20%, 30% and 40% porous samples respectively.

Karabulut, Büşra; Yon, Merve Sahin; Karataş, Mehmet
Portland cement fabrication is a significant factor that increases the amount of carbon dioxide released into nature. For this reason, it is very important to use natural and waste materials with pozzolanic properties instead of portland cement. In this article, the usability of diatomite rock, a natural pozzolanic material that can be substituted with portland cement, in the manufacture of self-compacting mortar was studied. In the experimental study, prismatic specimens with dimensions of 40 × 40 × 160 mm were used to examine the impact of ground diatomite on the early age mechanical properties of self-compacting mortar; it was produced by replacing 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% of diatomite with portland cement, respectively. The slump-flow test to obtain self-compacting mortar was conducted according to the European Federation of Specialized Construction Chemicals and Concrete Systems guidance. Specimens prepared using 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% diatomite were cured in water at 23±2 ̊C temperature for 3 days. 3-day (early age) flexural and compressive strength worths were gained for the samples whose curing period was completed. As a result of this experimental study, it was specified that the highest strengths were in the series containing 5% diatomite, exceeding the reference samples. Additionally, it has been determined that mechanical strength decreases when the diatomite ratio in mixtures is more than 5%.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2024Anti-inflammatory activity of a novel lectin isolated from Pleurotus eryngii var. ferulae mushroom
Seliman, Thoiba Mogahid Hussein; Ülbegi, Gulsum Altiparmak; Ozsoy, Nurten; Kavlo, Hevidar Alp; Sagirli, Pinar Aksoy
Background and Aims: Pleurotus species are edible mushrooms with important economic and medicinal value. Many pharmacological properties of these species, such as anticancer, immunomodulating, and anti-inflammatory activities, have been attributed to lectin. The aim of this study was to purify a novel lectin from Pleurotus eryngii var. ferulae (PEFL) and investigate its anti-inflammatory activity. Methods: PEFL was purified by 80% ammonium sulphate fractionation, diethylaminoethyl (DEAE)-Sepharose-4B anion exchange, and Sephadex G-100 gel filtration chromatography. The molar mass of the purified lectin was determined by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) under denaturing conditions. Inhibition of lectin-induced haemagglutination by several carbohydrates and one glycoprotein (ovalbumin) was also performed using the haemagglutination inhibition activity test. The anti-inflammatory effect of PEFL was tested in a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation model in mouse macrophage cells (RAW 264.7). The levels of prostaglandin (PG)-E2, tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin1-beta (IL-1 beta), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-10 (IL-10), and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. Furthermore, the expression of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) was estimated by western blot analysis. Results: PEFL was obtained in 16% yield. The specific activity of PEFL was calculated as 1280 haemagglutinating units (HU)/mg protein and was inhibited only by D-galactose. The molecular weight was determined to be 46 kDa. PEFL showed an anti-inflammatory effect by reducing the production of pro-inflammatory PGs through COX-2 inhibition, as well as reducing iNOS expression.
