Kahramanoğullari, Merve; Erişir, Mine; Yaman, Mine; Parlak Ak, Tuba

Mercury chloride is a type of heavy metal that causes the formation of free radicals, causing hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity and apoptosis. In this study, the effects of naringenin on oxidative stress and apoptosis in the liver and kidney of rats exposed to mercury chloride were investigated. In the study, 41 2-month-old male Wistar-Albino rats were divided into five groups. Accordingly, group 1 was set as control group, group 2 as naringenin-100, group 3 as mercury chloride, group 4 as mercury chloride + naringenin-50, and group 5 as mercury chloride + naringenin-100. For the interventions, 1 mL/kg saline was administered to the control, 0.4 mg/kg/day mercury (II) chloride to the mercury chloride groups by i.p., and 50 and 100 mg/kg/day naringenin prepared in corn oil to the naringenin groups by gavage. All the interventions lasted for 20 days. Mercury chloride administration was initiated 1 h following the administration of naringenin. When mercury chloride and the control group were compared, a significant increase in plasma urea, liver and kidney malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, in kidney superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activities (p <.001), and a significant decrease in liver and kidney glutathione (GSH) levels (p <.001), in liver catalase (CAT) activity (p <.01) were observed. In addition, histopathological changes and a significant increase in caspase-3 levels were detected (p <.05). When mercury chloride and treatment groups were compared, the administration of naringenin caused a decrease aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) (p <.01), urea, creatinine levels (p <.001) in plasma, MDA levels in liver and kidney, SOD, GSH-Px, GST activities in kidney (p <.001), and increased GSH levels in liver and kidney. The addition of naringenin-100 increased GSH levels above the control (p <.001). The administration of naringenin was also decreased histopathological changes and caspase-3 levels (p <.05). Accordingly, it was determined that naringenin is protective and therapeutic against mercury chloride-induced oxidative damage and apoptosis in the liver and kidney, and 100 mg/kg naringenin is more effective in preventing histopathological changes and apoptosis.

Molecular characterization of apple endophytic bacteria and biological effect on Alternaria rot on apple

Bektas, Idris; Yazdıc, Ferit Can; Kusek, Mustafa

Apple rot disease, caused by Alternaria alternata, is causing significant losses in apple production, especially in post-harvest periods. Alternaria alternata, was isolated from rotten apple fruit of cv Amasya. Identification of the strain isolated from rotten apple fruit was made by ITS sequence and morphological analysis. In the present study, 58 different endophytic bacteria strains were isolated from apple fruit for use in apple rot disease control. Among the isolated strains, 26 endophyte strains were determined to inhibit the radial growth of mycelia of A. alternata in binary culture in PDA media. Based on 16S rRNA sequencing analysis, these antagonistic endophytic bacteria strains were identified as Bacillus ssp. Bacillus methylotrophicus (ib17) showed the highest significant inhibitory effect on the mycelial growth of A. alternata at a rate of 79.5% in PDA medium. The results of in vivo experiments showed that Bacillus licheniformis (ib20) achieved 100% biocontrol when endophyte bacterial strains were inoculated 24 h before the inoculation of A. alternata. When the three bacteria species and A. alternata were inoculated simultaneously, Bacillus myloliquefaciens (ib1), Bacillus licheniformis (ib21) and the Endophytic bacterium (ib16) showed the highest biocontrol efficacy against A. alternata at 81.8%. Furthermore, when the bacterial strains were inoculated at 24 h after inoculation of A. alternata, B. licheniformis (ib21) showed the highest biocontrol efficacy of 83.3% against the fungal pathogen compared to the controls. The endophytic bacterial strains produced fungal cell wall hydrolysing enzymes such as chitinase, cellulase, amylase and protease. According to the results of this study, apple endophytic bacteria are potential candidates to control apple decay caused by A. alternata through cell wall hydrolysing enzymes and reduce disease severity. However, the efficacy of the biological control was dependent on the applied time of epiphytic bacterial strains. Further research is needed on the biochemical mechanisms underlying the activity of these bacteria against A. alternata.

Serdar, Osman; Ketenalp, Zozan; Yildirim, Nuran Cikcikoglu

In this study, zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) were exposed to advanced biological wastewater treatment plant effluent (ABWTPE) for 96 h. At the end of the 96th hour, antioxidant parameters such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione S-transferase (GST), malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) were examined. The objective of the study was to identify biomarkers that are useful for assessing the potential toxic effects of ABWTPE in freshwater environments. We observed an increase in GPX, SOD activity and MDA levels, and a decrease in CAT, GST activity and GSH levels. The results obtained in our study showed that the measured biochemical parameters (GSH, MDA, SOD, CAT, GPX and GST) are useful biomarkers in determining the possible toxicity of ABWTPE in aquatic environments.

Preparation and characterization of the highly efficient tetraphenylimidazole substituted Phthalocyanine/ZnO composite and investigation of its effect on the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol

Karaoğlu, Kaan; Yüzüak, Gizem Durak; Yüzüak, Ercüment; Turan, Hanife; Akçay, Hakkı Türker

Growing concerns about industrial waste-induced environmental degradation have driven research towards sustainable solutions. Photocatalytic degradation, fueled by light and avoiding harmful chemicals, offers a promising avenue due to its minimal environmental impact. ZnO, TiO₂, and their derivatives are particularly effective and widely studied photocatalysts. This study aims to prepare new composite materials bearing phthalocyanine and investigate the photocatalytic properties on the degradation of Rhodamine B dye and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) as the model compounds. In the initial step, ZnO materials were synthesized using the solvothermal method. Subsequently, a novel Zn(II) complex, including peripherally tetra phenyl imidazole substituted phthalocyanine, was successfully prepared. The composite catalysts were prepared from ZnO materials produced with the tetraphenyl imidazole phthalocyanine Zn(II) complex, called TFI-Zn. The were characterized using instrumental techniques. The photocatalytic characteristics of the composite materials developed were further examined under varying quantities of catalyst and Rhodamine B, variable pH conditions, and varying intensities of UV-A light. In addition, the reusability of the catalyst was investigated. With the new composite photocatalyst prepared within the scope of this study, 98% degradation efficiency and 8.0 × 10−4 min−1 degradation rate was obtained on Rhodamine B solution in 40 min. The newly developed photocatalyst displayed remarkable catalytic activity that remained virtually unchanged for five consecutive cycles, indicating excellent reusability and operational stability. The photocatalytic degradation performance of ZnO-TFI-Zn (1) was also examined on TCP and 90% degradation activity was obtained at the end of 80 min.

Assessment of critical raw materials by addressing sustainable development goals using fuzzy MCDM approach

    Göçmen-Polat, Elifcan

Critical raw materials (CRMs), constituting the first step of the industry, are vital to meet sustainable development. With increasing digital technology and green transition efforts under the scope of twin transformation, demand for CRMs has increased, and supply interruption is expected in the future. All countries should plan the supply chain of CRMs in the context of the green and digital transition. The sustainable development goals (SDGs) have presented a reference based on sustainability metrics. In the chapter, hesitant-fuzzy analytical hierarchy process-based order preference technique based on similarity to ideal solutions (HF-AHP based TOPSIS) has been developed to evaluate the critical raw materials in the context of sustainability. Most relevant goals with the CRMs are obtained as SDG 1, SDG 3, SDG 5, SDG 6, SDG 7, SDG 8, SDG 9, SDG 11, SDG 17. The findings show how raw materials have important strengths and weaknesses in sustainable development. Policies recommended for the most important CRMs are effective road maps in the context of twin transformation.

Otherness and censorship in the theatre of Turkey (1960s-70s)

    Çelik, Duygu

This chapter delves into the relationship between censorship and 'otherness', examining three plays across distinct political epochs from the multi-party period of 1945-60 to the post-coup regimes of 1960 and 1971, marked by democratic transitions and restricted liberties Musa Anter's Birîna Reş (1959), recognised as the first Kurdish play on Republican history, encountered state prohibition and confiscation in 1965. Erol Toy's Pir Sultan Abdal (1968), centered on the Alevi folk poet, faced a ban exclusively in Tunceli, a city predominantly inhabited by Alevis, amidst violent events resulting in a civilian's death. Deprem ve Zulüm (1977), a collaborative piece by the Revolutionary Ankara Art Theatre, explores the aftermath of a 1976 earthquake in Van, a Kurdish-dominated city. These plays share a commonality in addressing the concept of the 'Other' and were censored under the accusation of promoting separatism, thereby violating constitutional norms. By scrutinising these cases, the chapter aims to unravel the dynamics between artistic expression, political climates, and the imposition of censorship, shedding light on how the theme of 'otherness' becomes entangled in the suppression of voices across diverse socio-political contexts.

A New Approach to Detecting Free Parking Spaces Based on YOLOv6 and Keyframe Detection with Video Analytics

Yilmazer, Merve; Karakose, Mehmet; Tanberk, Senem; Arslan, Samed

With urbanization and population growth, automobile use has also increased. As a result of this, there is a need to expand parking management and inspection systems to ensure safe and efficient use of parking areas. A new deep learning-based method has been proposed as an alternative to traditional systems to control free spaces in parking areas monitored by CCTV security cameras. A large amount of video data needs to be processed for parking areas recorded with video cameras 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Repeating frames in videos cause overlearning in deep learning models. It also increases memory and computation cost. For this reason, keyframe detection based on sampling was first performed on the sample video of the Dragon Lake Parking (DLP) dataset and a summary of the dataset was obtained. Then, empty parking areas were detected by YOLOv6 deep neural network. It has been observed that the model can detect empty parking areas at a rate of 96.6% mAP.

Resistance to magnesium sulphate attack of binary and ternary cementless self-compacting alkali-activated mortar

    Şahin Yön, Merve; Karataş, Mehmet

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of sulphate on self-compacting alkali-activated mortars (SCAAMs) produced using volcanic scoria (V), boron waste (B) and granulated blast furnace slag (G) together with alkali activators. Thus, the production of cement-free alkali-active mortar by recycling waste and reducing the CO2 effect increases the importance of this study. The fact that the waste material is provided free of charge and that V is readily available from nature provides economic advantages in the production of these mortars. In this experimental study, magnesium sulphate solution was utilized to define the sulphate resistance of SCAAMs. In binary SCAAMs, B was used with G in a ratio of NS:NH = 3.0, with an increase from 5 % to 15 %; in ternary mixtures, B was used together with G and V in the same proportions, in a ratio of NS:NH = 1.0. The tests involved immersion in 5 % magnesium sulphate solution for 1, 3 and 6 months. Mass development, compressive strength, visual inspection and microstructural changes were investigated. In general, the binary SCAAMs performed better in magnesium sulphate solution than the ternary SCAAMs, except in the 6th month. Considering the samples with the highest B content, a 100 % loss of compressive strength occurred in the B15G85 sample under the influence of sulphate for 6 months, while a loss of compressive strength of about 15 % occurred in the B15G40V45 sample. The results showed that the increase in B content caused a severe deterioration of the sulphate effect in the samples over time and that the V additive had a positive effect on the sulphate resistance.

Impact of a Novel Valerian Extract on Sleep Quality, Relaxation, and GABA/Serotonin Receptor Activity in a Murine Model

Sahin, Kazim; Gencoglu, Hasan; Korkusuz, Ahmet Kayhan; Orhan, Cemal; Aldatmaz, İsmail Ertuğ; Erten, Fusun; Er, Besir; Morde, Abhijeet; Padigaru, Muralidhara; Kilic, Ertugrul

Insomnia is a major global health issue, highlighting the need for treatments that are both effective and safe. Valerian extract, a traditional remedy for sleep problems, offers potential therapeutic options. This research examined the potential sleep-enhancing effects of VA (Valerian Pdr%2) in mice. The study evaluated sleep quality by comparing the impact of the VA extract against melatonin on brain activity, using electrocorticography (ECoG) to assess changes in brain waves. For this purpose, the study utilized two experimental models on BALB/c mice to explore the effects of caffeine-induced insomnia and pentobarbital-induced sleep. In the first model, 25 mice were assigned to five groups to test the effects of caffeine (caffeine, 7.5 mg/kg i.p) alone, caffeine with melatonin (2 mg/kg), or caffeine with different doses of valerian extract (100 or 300 mg/kg) given orally on brain activity, assessed via electrocorticography (ECoG) and further analyses on the receptor proteins and neurotransmitters. In the second model, a different set of 25 mice were divided into five groups to examine the impact of pentobarbital (42 mg/kg) alone, with melatonin, or with the valerian extract on sleep induction, observing the effects 45 min after administration. The study found that ECoG frequencies were lower in groups treated with melatonin and two doses of valerian extract (100 and 300 mg/kg), with 300 mg/kg showing the most significant effect in reducing frequencies compared to the caffeine control group, indicating enhanced sleep quality (p < 0.05). This was supported by increased levels of serotonin, melatonin, and dopamine and higher levels of certain brain receptors in the melatonin and valerian extract groups (p < 0.05). Modulatory efficacy for the apoptotic markers in the brain was also noted (p < 0.05). Additionally, melatonin and both doses of VA increased sleep duration and reduced sleep onset time compared to the pentobarbital control, which was particularly notable with high doses. In conclusion, the findings suggest that high doses (300 mg/kg) of valerian extract enhance both the quantity and quality of sleep through the GABAergic pathway and effectively increase sleep duration while reducing the time to fall asleep in a pentobarbital-induced sleep model in mice.

An Analysis of Dependence Relationships Between Covid-19 Pandemic and Environmental Conditions Cases Study in Indonesia, England, and Türkiye

Handhayani, Teny; Caglar, Durdane Kocacoban; Wibowo, F.W.

This study explores the causal relationships between environmental conditions and Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) using Bayesian networks in three geographically distinct cities: Jakarta (Indonesia), London (England), and Istanbul (Türkiye). The datasets collected from these cities span from January 2020 to October 2022, encompassing a variety of environmental variables (Particulate Matter (PM2.5), temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind speed, and Ultraviolet (UV) index) and COVID-19 variables (new cases, deaths, and population density). By using the PC algorithm and Greedy Equivalence Search (GES) to generate causal graphs, and applying the Intersection-Validation (InterVal) method to derive agreement graphs, this research reveals significant geographical differences in how environmental factors influence COVID-19 dynamics. The Peter-Clark (PC) algorithm identifies conditional dependencies, while GES optimizes the structure of the causal graph. The study highlights the significant impact of temperature, UV index, and humidity on COVID-19 dynamics, emphasizing the importance of localized public health strategies tailored to specific environmental conditions. These findings contribute to the understanding of environmental influences on COVID-19 and offer valuable insights for future research and policy-making aimed at mitigating the impact of pandemics in diverse geographical settings.

Fabrication and structural, physical, and nuclear radiation shielding properties for Oxide Dispersion-Strengthened (ODS) alloys through Erbium (III) oxide, Samarium (III) oxide, and Praseodymium (III) oxide into 316L matrix

Güler, Seval Hale; Güler, Ömer; Kavaz, E.; ALMisned, Ghada; Albayrak, M. Gökhan; Issa, Bashar; Tekin, H.O.

We report a comprehensive investigation on customization process of Oxide Dispersion-Strengthened alloys through Sm2O3, Pr2O3, and Er2O3 incorporation into 316L stainless steel matrix in terms of a desired enhancement in structural, physical, and nuclear radiation shielding properties. Oxide powders are incorporated into 316L stainless steel powder all with the same purity of 99.5%. These were Erbium oxide (Er2O3), Praseodymium oxide (Pr2O3), and Samarium oxide (Sm2O3). First, X-Ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscope/Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses are conducted in order to investigate their physical and structural properties. Next, two different experimental setups are employed using a133Ba and 241Am/Be sources for the measurements of gamma-ray and neutron transmission properties of Oxide Dispersion-Strengthened alloys. The maximum density increment is achieved through Er2O3 compared to other reinforced oxides. The detector counting value reached its minimum level when a 5% Er2O3 oxide dispersion was introduced into the 316L SS matrix. Similarly, the most significant degree of photon absorption, the highest values of mass attenuation coefficient, lowest half value layer, and most effective atomic number, were all attained by the same sample. Based on the findings derived from the investigation, it can be concluded that incorporating Er2O3 oxide into 316L steel can be considered as a viable option in terms of enhancing the critical properties of Oxide Dispersion-Strengthened alloys for extreme conditions such as nuclear reactors and other similar fields, where the behavioral attributes of the utilized materials are at utmost importance.

High thermal stability effect of vanadium on the binary CuAl base alloy for a novel CuAlV high-temperature shape memory alloy

Karaduman, Oktay; Özkul, İskender; Güler, Seval Hale; Aksu Canbay, Canan

In this study, two high-temperature shape memory alloys (HTSMAs) of CuAlV with unprecedented chemical compositions were fabricated using the arc melting technique, followed by traditional ice-brine water quenching after the melting process. To characterize the shape memory properties and structure of the alloys, a series of tests including differential calorimetry (DSC and DTA), EDS, optical microscopy, and XRD were conducted. The DSC tests, performed at different heating and cooling rates, demonstrated highly stable reversible martensitic phase transformation peaks at high temperatures, which were also confirmed by the results of DTA tests. Microstructural XRD and optical microscopy tests were conducted at room temperature, revealing the martensitic structure of the alloys in both cases. Based on all the results, the effects of different minor amounts of vanadium additives directly on the CuAlV alloy were discussed.

Sonochemical removal of Pb (II) ions from the water medium using Bi2S3 nanostructres

Kurnaz Yetim, Nurdan; Berberoğlu, Elif Aybike; Aslan, Naim; Koç, Mümin Mehmet; Özcan, Cemile

Removal of heavy metals becomes increasingly crucial for public health and the environment. In this regard, Bi2S3 nanoflowers were produced for heavy metal ion removal applications. Nanoflowers are fabricated using hydrothermal synthesis, and then tested as adsorbents for the removal of lead (Pb2+) ions from aqueous systems. To assess the morphological and chemical characteristics, Bi2S3 nanoflowers were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. Flame atomic adsorption spectroscopy (FAAS) was used in the assessment of heavy metal ion recovery. To determine the optimum conditions of the adsorption system, the effect of different parameters such as pH, eluent type and amount, adsorbent dose, adsorbent time, etc. were investigated. For lead removal, the optimum pH value was determined as 5.0, eluent dose and type were found 1 M HNO3. For 20 mL, the optimum adsorbent dose and time were found 50.0 mg, and 30 min, respectively. The adsorption capacity of the Bi2S3 nanoflowers was found to be quite higher than the results reported in similar works. It was illustrated that Bi2S3 nanoflowers have great potential to be used in water remediation applications as sorbent material.

A new CNN-based semantic object segmentation for autonomous vehicles in urban traffic scenes

    Doğan, Gürkan; Ergen, Burhan

Semantic segmentation is the most important stage of making sense of the visual traffic scene for autonomous driving. In recent years, convolutional neural networks (CNN)-based methods for semantic segmentation of urban traffic scenes are among the trending studies. However, the methods developed in the studies carried out so far are insufficient in terms of accuracy performance criteria. In this study, a new CNN-based semantic segmentation method with higher accuracy performance is proposed. A new module, the Attentional Atrous Feature Pooling (AAFP) Module, has been developed for the proposed method. This module is located between the encoder and decoder in the general network structure and aims to obtain multi-scale information and add attentional features to large and small objects. As a result of experimental tests with the CamVid data set, an accuracy value of approximately 2% higher was achieved with a mIoU value of 70.59% compared to other state-of-art methods. Therefore, the proposed method can semantically segment objects in the urban traffic scene better than other methods.

Exposure and connectedness to natural environments: An examination of the measurement invariance of the Nature Exposure Scale (NES) and Connectedness to Nature Scale (CNS) across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups

Swami, Viren; White, Mathew P.; Voracek, Martin; Tran, Ulrich S.; Aavik, Toivo; Ranjbar, Hamed Abdollahpour; Adebayo, Sulaiman Olanrewaju; Afhami, Reza; Ahmed, Oli; Aimé, Annie

Detachment from nature is contributing to the environmental crisis and reversing this trend requires detailed monitoring and targeted interventions to reconnect people to nature. Most tools measuring nature exposure and attachment were developed in high-income countries and little is known about their robustness across national and linguistic groups. Therefore, we used data from the Body Image in Nature Survey to assess measurement invariance of the Nature Exposure Scale (NES) and the Connectedness to Nature Scale (CNS) across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups (N = 56,968). While multi-group confirmatory factor analysis (MG-CFA) of the NES supported full scalar invariance across gender identities and age groups, only partial scalar invariance was supported across national and linguistic groups. MG-CFA of the CNS also supported full scalar invariance across gender identities and age groups, but only partial scalar invariance of a 7-item version of the CNS across national and linguistic groups. Nation-level associations between NES and CNS scores were negligible, likely reflecting a lack of conceptual clarity over what the NES is measuring. Individual-level associations between both measures and sociodemographic variables were weak. Findings suggest that the CNS-7 may be a useful tool to measure nature connectedness globally, but measures other than the NES may be needed to capture nature exposure cross-culturally.

In the current article, we examine Lorentzian para-Kenmotsu (shortly, LP-Kenmotsu) manifolds with regard to the generalized symmetric metric connection (Formula presented.) of type (Formula presented.). First, we obtain the expressions for curvature tensor, Ricci tensor and scalar curvature of an LP-Kenmotsu manifold with regard to the connection (Formula presented.). Next, we analyze LP-Kenmotsu manifolds equipped with the connection (Formula presented.) that are locally symmetric, Ricci semi-symmetric, and (Formula presented.) -Ricci symmetric and also demonstrated that in all these situations the manifold is an Einstein one with regard to the connection (Formula presented.). Moreover, we obtain some conclusions about projectively flat, projectively semi-symmetric and (Formula presented.) -projectively flat LP-Kenmotsu manifolds concerning the connection (Formula presented.) along with several consequences through corollaries. Ultimately, we provide a 5-dimensional LP-Kenmotsu manifold example to validate the derived expressions.

Effect of oxidation on radiation shielding capacity of ZrNbTaMoW Refractory High Entropy Alloys (RHEA) for nuclear reactor applications: Experimental and theoretical assessment

    Sakar, E.; Guler, O.; Alim, B.; Guler, S.H.; Dikici, B.; Lampke, T.

This study presents the production and comprehensive assessment of a Refractory High Entropy Alloy (RHEA) with a ZrNbTaMoW composition for possible usage nuclear reactor applications. The alloy was synthesized using the mechanical alloying (MA) method, and its radiation properties were examined. Elemental powders of Zr, Nb, Ta, Mo, and W were utilized in equimolar quantities during the 120-hour MA process, conducted under a high-purity Ar atmosphere to prevent oxidation. The obtained HEA was then subjected to a mechano-thermal process to transform it into Refractory High-Entropy Oxide (RHEO) for comparing their radiation-shielding performance under oxide conditions. The characterization of the produced alloys through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The photon shielding parameters of the alloys were experimentally obtained for various energies emitted from a 133Ba radioactive source, employing a Canberra UltraLEGe semiconductor detector. Furthermore, theoretical calculations were performed to validate the experimental data and to evaluate the alloys' photon shielding capabilities comprehensively. For this purpose, Phy-X/PSD software was employed to determine mass attenuation coefficients, half-value layer, effective atomic number, and effective electron density. Fast neutron absorption capabilities were determined through the calculation of average absorption cross-sections in the 2–12 MeV energy range. The results showed that the oxidation process significantly diminished the photon absorption capacity of RHEA.

AISI 52100 steel has been widely used in the bearing, mold, and automotive industries because of its superior wear resistance and mechanical properties. However, its high wear resistance caused poor machinability in conventional machining methods. Low surface quality, rapid tool wear, high cutting temperature, and high cutting force are the main difficulties in the conventional machining of AISI 52100 steel. On the other hand, ultrasonic-assisted machining has become widely used in the past decades for the machining of materials that have low machinability in conventional methods. Conventional turning and ultrasonic-assisted turning were selected as machining methods. Ultrasonic-assisted turning experiments were conducted under 20 and 30 kHz vibration frequencies. Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) cutting tools were used in machining experiments. In machining operations 50, 100, and 150 m/min cutting speeds were selected, and feed rate (0.1 mm/rev) and depth of cut (0.5 mm) were kept constant in experiments. Minimum quantity lubrication technique which used 1% Al2O3 nanoparticle additives cutting fluid and dry cooling methods were used. CBN insert was used as a cutting tool. The effects of cutting speed, cutting method, and cooling condition on surface quality, cutting force, cutting zone temperature, and cutting tool wear were studied experimentally. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was carried out to determine the significance of the effects of input variables on process outputs. As a result of this study, it is determined that combined UAT and nanoMQL have significant effects on the process outputs.

For the first time, CuAlVMg high-temperature shape memory alloy (HTSMA) with unprecedented alloy composition and with extended solubility of vanadium element was fabricated as-cast ingot by arc melting method, then homogenization of the alloy in high β-phase temperature region and quenching in iced-brine water were performed, respectively. The characteristic forward martensite to austenite martensitic transformation (MT) temperatures were detected at around 390 °C, which put the novel alloy in the category of HTSMAs. The thermal response of the alloy at high-temperatures was observed by DTA test as coherent with usual Cu-based HTSMAs. The residual sub-eutectoid precipitations emerging at around 500 °C hindered the direct martensitic transformation. The martensite structure of the alloy was revealed by XRD, SEM and optical microscopy tests.
