Effects of Cadmium and Nickel on Embryonic Development of Fish: A Review

Danabaş, Durali; Naz, Saima; Chatha, Ahmad Manan Mustafa

In fish embryos, a variety of abnormalities have been found, including stunted growth, a reduced survival rate, and aberrant development. One plausible explanation is that early embryonic stages are more sensitive. Embryonic studies provide additional information regarding the various impacts of heavy metals on fish, but information on larval abnormalities caused by waterborne metals is lacking. It is found that cadmium (Cd) causes a decrease in thyroid hormone levels as well as a disruption in fish growth hormone expression. Similarly, negative health effects have been documented as a result of nickel (Ni) exposure. Some toxic effects on organs, skin irritation, skin itches or blisters and allergic reactions may occur as a result of Ni exposure. This review study focuses on the impacts of Cd and Ni, on the embryonic development of different fish species. The evidence on abnormalities in fish larvae caused by Cd and Ni was also provided in text.

Experimental investigation of engineering properties of silica sand filled mortars containing high doses of SWCNT

Subaşı, Serkan; Dehghanpour, Heydar; Maraşlı, Muhammed; Doğan, Fatih

Recently, great efforts have been made by researchers on the mixture of electrically conductive concretes that have been developed for different purposes. In this study, an experimental research was carried out on electrically conductive mortar mixtures especially for shell elements produced for building facade cladding. Six different mixtures were produced, including the non-conductive reference mixture. Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) was used as nano-sized conductive additive material. SWCNT was added at 0.2% and 0.3% of cement weight. SF was added to the same mixtures as another group at the rate of 4% by total weight. 2, 14, 28, 90 and 180 days electrical resistivities of the obtained conductive mortar samples were measured. As a non-destructive method, dynamic resonance testing was performed and the 28-day damping rates of the samples were determined. Ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) and Leeb hardness tests were performed, respectively, by using other non-destructive testing methods to obtain information about the internal structure voids and surface hardness of the samples. SWCNT, which causes low machinability and therefore internal structure voids, caused a decrease in compressive strength and flexural strength, as well as a significant increase in electrical conductivity.

We thoroughly evaluated the effects of various treatments on the structural and electrical properties of the two as-cast materials, “Sb-doping Bi-Te (p-type)” and “Se-doping Bi-Te (n-type)” which are frequently present in abandoned Peltier modules. To investigate the thermoelectric properties of Bi2Te3-based materials, waste alloys characterized by electrical conductivity using the hot-end method. Alloys were purified by performing arc melting on a water-cooled copper crucible in a vacuum of at least 10-3 mbar, with five times melting sessions to assure homogeneity. A single and long milling period of 144 hours is applied. After the compressing operation, the resulting discs with nanostructures were annealed for an hour at 600 K under vacuum conditions. The discs' structural properties were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and their surfaces and stoichiometries were determined using scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive feature. The Seebeck coefficient of the nanoparticle formed n-type Bi-Te based sample is -35.3 μV.K-1 and p-type Bi-Te based sample is 100 μV.K-1 (15% of mean error margin). It was found that a notable improvement was attained in comparison to the initial state with the addition of nanoparticles.

The role of mental practice and technology in traditional violin teaching and learning

    Çit, Uğur

Music is a creative art that requires spontaneous emotional expression. This art necessitates proficiency with musical instruments, such as the violin. Despite the fact that the approaches for advancing the skill of violin playing are generally recognized, new teaching methods have emerged as a result of the Internet and technological breakthroughs. Based on this context, this study aims at examining how the advances on the Internet and technology are affecting violin education and learning, and accordingly, the effects of YouTube, an online Web 2.0 tool, and Suzuki and Zhang's audio and online video teaching methods on violin education. Document analysis, a qualitative research method, was used in the research methodology. As the working document of the research, the teaching techniques of violin instructors who use the traditional approach method for the applicability of new learning approaches in violin education were analyzed, and their individual teaching experiences were discussed. The results of these experiences show that there is a consensus regarding the significance of mental practice in developing mind-body coordination during the initial stages of learning to play the violin. The research findings demonstrate that the online method, one of Suzuki and Zhang's technological approaches, lags behind the traditional approach method. It was found that technological approaches, in particular, are insufficient in meeting the needs of students in violin education and in guiding the learning development of their mental practices. However, YouTube has also been deemed significant because it allows students to view masterclasses and performances by renowned musicians and orchestras.

Self-Powered Mechanical Energy Sensor Application of SnO2/Ag and PMMA/ITO Nanocomposites via Triboelectric Effect

Yüzüak, Ercüment; Cetin, Mehmet; Yüzüak, Gizem Durak

The triboelectric nanogenerator is a state-of-the-art device for addressing the growing problem of meeting the world's ever-increasing energy needs by converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. Using the popular semiconductor SnO2 nanostructured thin films as a triboelectric layer over contact regions, as opposed to polymers with lesser performance, increases the output power and life time of nanogenerators. In order to design a triboelectric nanogenerator, deposited thin film SnO2 is used as a friction layer with Ag electrode after heat-treatment at 623 K with a contrary layer of PMMA poly (methyl-methacrylate) with ITO electrode. The structural and electrical properties were analyzed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electro-impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements. The increased output power of the triboelectric nanogenerator is attributed to the nanoscale PMMA contact charge created by tunneling electrons in the SnO2/Ag nanocomposite thin film layer. Due to its proximity to the PMMA/ITO surface, the SnO2/Ag layer causes electron field emission, and tapping the SnO2/Ag layer may result in electron cloud overlap. Similar to a semiconductor/insulator interface, the Fermi level of SnO2 plays a crucial role in electron transport. The system efficiency stated as a touch detector in a conventional keyboard that generates its own power is revealed in part by an analysis of its operating state up to the 4V.

Effect of Longer Waiting Time During OCP and Pre-Applied Cleaning Potential In Corrosion Analysis of Zinc Metal

    Cihangir, Salih

Tafel analysis is a widely accepted technique for corrosion studies in electrochemistry. A general literature search for one of the electronegative metals, zinc, revealed serious deviations in corrosion results. In order to understand the reasons behind these deviations, zinc metal was investigated at macro and micro levels during and after the Tafel corrosion analysis. In-situ macro surface investigation during the OCP period and Tafel analysis were performed, and it was found that the zinc surface undergoes proceeding corrosion attack following the immersion in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. In-situ macro surface analysis exhibited that the pre-oxidation of the surface proceeds as nonuniform at local regions. SEM-EDS and XRD analysis proved that the particular crystal planes of the zinc form ZnO with increasing immersion time. A linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) technique was applied to detect the oxygen removal and starting hydrogen evolution potentials. Three identical Tafel experiments were performed on samples without any treatment, and another three consecutive Tafel experiments were performed on the samples which applied pre-reduction potential. Obtained results revealed that in-situ pre-applied reduction potential just before the Tafel analysis cleaned the surface and allowed uniform oxide formation, resulting in the lowest standard deviation of the calculated Tafel elements.

Examining the relationship between attitudes of ambivalent sexism and dating violence

    Yeşiltepe, Akgün; Tire, Olcay

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between attitudes towards dating violence and conflicting sexist attitudes. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using a total of 283 students at the Faculty of Letters of Munzur University in Türkiye between February and June 2021. The data were collected using a descriptive information form, the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory and the Dating Violence Questionnaire, and analyzed using Mann Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis tests, Spearman’s correlation analysis and Bonferroni test. A statistically significant moderately positive relationship was found between the students’ attitudes of ambivalent sexism and dating violence. The students had a high level of ambivalent sexism and a low level of dating violence. In the study, it was determined that men (74.93±22.41) exhibit higher ambivalent sexism attitudes than women (60.14±22.02), and the mean dating violence rate of men (1.56±0.38) is higher than that of women (1.30±0.29). As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the hostile and protective sexist attitude, which is the sub-dimensions of ambivalent sexism, is higher in male students than in female students. Finally, it was found that those with high protective sexism attitudes have more dating violence attitudes than those with high hostile sexism attitudes. The findings reveal that the ambivalent sexist attitude supports dating violence.

Tsallis Holographic Dark Energy with Granda-Oliveros Scale in Bianchi-Type V Universe

    Korunur, Murat; Korunur, Sibel

A wide variety of cosmological observations show us that our universe is in an accelerated expansion phase. Dark Energy and Dark Matter are thought to be two of the causes of this accelerated expansion. Therefore, scientists have recently been doing many studies on dark energy and matter. In particular, many energy density relations are written, and research is done about space-time structure. In this sense, the Tsallis holographic dark energy model is also in a current and interesting position. The study establishes a relationship between the Tsallis holographic dark energy (THDE) model and some scalar fields (quintessence, tachyon, dilaton scalar fields, etc.) specific to the Bianchi-type V space-time model. The relationship above is discussed within the Granda-Oliveros (GO) cut-off framework. The state equation parameter is calculated analytically, and the phase of our universe for this model is investigated with the graphs drawn. In addition, there is how the kinetic energy and the scalar potential change with time. The results are again analyzed numerically with graphs.

An integrated Bayesian Best-Worst Method and GIS-based approach for offshore wind power plant site selection: A case study in North Aegean and Marmara Sea (Türkiye)

Gul, Muhammet; Yucesan, Melih; Konurhan, Zekeriya

In today’s world, renewable energy sources are in great demand due to the negative ef- fects of fossil fuels on the environment. Wind power plants are an important renewable energy source alternative to fossil fuel consumption. Offshore wind farms established in coastal areas and seas are used effectively in many parts of the world. The wind power plants, especially in the Northwest region of Turkey and the Aegean coasts, constitute an important potential. This study selects suitable sites for offshore wind farms in the Marmara Sea and North Aegean Coasts of Turkey by integrating the Bayesian Best-Worst method (BWM) and GIS. Bayesian BWM improves the traditional BWM integrating the preferences of multiple experts. In the study, 17 sub-criteria were determined under four main criteria of “technical”, “socio-economic”, “environment,” and “location”. Ex- perts’ judgments through the filled enabled the criterion weights to be obtained. The criteria weights found using the Bayesian-BWM model were integrated into the GIS, and suitable locations for the offshore wind farm were determined. Accordingly, the study area off the coasts of Aliağa, Bozcaada, and Gökçeada on the North Aegean coast, and the part south of the Marmara Sea and the area around Kapıdağ Peninsula are sugges- ted as suitable areas for wind power plants.

Does Tourism Reduce Regional Inequality? Spatial Appearance of Tourism Development in Turkey

    Kervankiran, Ismail; Sert Eteman, Fatma

Interregional development disparities have emerged as one of the most controversial issues in contemporary discourse. Across the globe, disparities in various facets, including social, cultural, tourism, and economic dimensions, are strikingly evident. Turkey, a nation renowned for its importance in the global tourism landscape, is no exception to this phenomenon. The spatial distribution of tourism development in Turkey reveals an inequality. This study aims to examine the variations in interregional tourism development by establishing a comprehensive tourism development index for Turkish cities and subsequently categorizing them based on their distinctive levels of development. To achieve this, a dataset consisting of 18 variables from various public institutions in the year 2017 was compiled. With this data set, Principal Component Analysis was employed to compute the tourism development index for each city, and the Hierarchical Cluster Method was used to categorize cities into distinct development categories. In conclusion, the research underscores the influence of both policy interventions, planning, and the intrinsic characteristics of cities in shaping the spatial disparities in tourism development within Turkey. The implementation of neoliberal policies has notably concentrated capital, investments, and the tourism market in the Mediterranean and Aegean coastal regions, exacerbating spatial inequality in tourism. The implications of this study hold the potential to guide policymakers in narrowing the gaps in interregional tourism development within Turkey, thereby fostering a more equitable and sustainable future.
