Rainbow trout aquaculture is challenging due to the restricted spawning seasons. Sperm cryopreservation technology can help ensure a successful spawning season, but its effectiveness is restricted by oxidative stress during freezing and thawing, which reduces the availability of male gametes. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of several types and concentrations of antioxidants on post-cryopreservation rainbow trout sperm quality. Subsequently, a factorial completely randomized design with three replications was applied, testing four types of antioxidants Ascorbic acid, Myo-inositol, Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), and Alpha-tocopherol at concentrations of 0, 20, 40, and 60 mM, respectively. The evaluation parameters included motility rate, sperm lifespan, and sperm motion characteristics using the Computer Assisted Sperm Analysis system. The results showed that the type and concentration of antioxidants significantly affected sperm motility and sperm lifespan (P<0.05). The treatment method carried out using 40 mM Ascorbic acid and 20 mM BHT led to the highest sperm motility of 46.67% and sperm lifespan of 34 seconds. Although both antioxidants showed similar effectiveness, BHT at a concentration of 20 mM is more recommended due to its lower toxicity and technical as well as economic efficiency considerations.

Gün, Abdulselam; Kızak, Volkan; Gündüz, Fatih
In this research, larval growth features by applying different diets and growth characteristics of fry at different stocking densities were studied under controlled conditions for the Tigris scraper (Capoeta umbla). In the first experiment, the growth and survival rates of Tigris scraper postlarvae were evaluated under three different diet regimes over 21 days. The highest mean total length was 24.04±0.27 mm in the group L1 fed solely Artemia nauplii, and the lowest mean total length was 17.89±0.16 mm in the group L2 fed only dry feed. The highest mean specific growth rate was in the L1, and the lowest mean specific growth rate was in the L2. In the second experiment in which the growth characteristics of fry were investigated at different stocking densities for 98 days, the highest mean live weight was found in S1 with 2.819±0.157 g and the lowest mean live weight was determined as 0.859±0.073 g in S5. The highest mean specific growth rate was in S1, while the lowest rate was in S5. High stocking densities were found to be disadvantageous for growth of C. umbla fry. The findings suggest that successful rearing of Tigris scraper postlarvae and fry is feasible under controlled conditions.

Serdar, Osman
This study aimed to investigate both the protective and therapeutic effects of propolis (PP) against pesticide-induced oxidative stress in aquatic environments. For this purpose, Gammarus pulex was exposed to 0.00 (control), 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2 ppm concentrations of cyfluthrin (CYF) to determine its toxic effects. To evaluate the protective effect of PP, 5 ppm of PP was added to each pesticide concentration. Samples were collected from all experimental groups after 24 and 96 hours under appropriate conditions. SOD activity decreased under CYF exposure but increased significantly after PP supplementation. Although CAT activity did not show significant changes with CYF alone, it increased in the presence of PP. GPx activity remained statistically unchanged under CYF exposure but increased following PP treatment. CYF exposure led to decreased GSH levels; however, PP did not significantly alter GSH levels. TBARS levels increased due to CYF, and this increase was alleviated by PP application.

As a result of the increased use of metals such as copper (Cu), copper pollution in the environment is also increasing. In order to investigate the effect of copper mixed into the water environment and on aquatic biota, the microalga Navicula cryptocephala var. veneta was chosen as a model organism. N. cryptocephala var. veneta it was aimed to determine the accumulation and elimination amounts and some biomarker responses. Metal accumulation amounts in the organisms used in the study. The amount of metal accumulated in relation to the wet weight mass of the samples was determined using Atomic Absorption Spectophotometry (AAS) mass spectrometry. In the bioassays conducted within the scope of the study, lipid peroxidation (TBARS) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels, superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme activity, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) enzyme activity and catalase (CAT) enzyme activity were determined with an ELISA microplate reader at 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 hours. According to the study data, it was observed that Cu metal accumulated in Navicula cryptocephala var. veneta and caused oxidative stress in the organism, affecting the organism by causing changes in TBARS, GSH levels and antioxidant enzymes SOD, CAT and GPx activities. Additionally, it was observed that different elimination levels occurred in the application groups.

Can, Erkan; Özçiçek, Esin; Erol, Nida Demirtaş; Austin, Brian
There has been much discussion about which is better, farmed (= aquaculture) or wild-caught fish (= capture-fisheries), with supporters and opponents of both approaches. On balance, aquaculture should be the better option because of the ability to control all aspects of production. The result is that farmed products are often cheaper than wild-caught equivalents. However, there are negative aspects to aquaculture, including habitat destruction, for example the removal of mangroves for the construction of shrimp farms, the effect of escapees on native fish populations, and the possible negative impact of pollution from organic material, pathogens and antimicrobial compounds. The use of wild-caught “trash” fish as a source of protein and oil for the diets of carnivorous fish species in aquaculture is unsustainable. In contrast with wild-caught fish, there is greater variability in supply because of overfishing, quotas imposed by governments, and the effects of adverse weather. Moreover, fishing in distant waters is expensive and hazardous. Certainly, the quality of the product is more difficult to control because the history of the catch is largely unknown. However, there are concerns about illegal fishing activities, and the capture of undersized specimens which impacts negatively on future stocking levels. For the forseeable future, there will be roles for both aquaculture and capture-fisheries to meet the increasing global demand for aquatic food.

Pollutants such as copper nanoparticles (CuNP), which form residues in the environment, especially in water environments, cause serious damage to the environment and the organisms living in the environment. In this study, Navicula cryptocephala var. veneta was selected as a model organism. The EC50 values of CuNP on Navicula cryptocephala var. veneta were determined as 4.94 mg\L and 3 different application concentrations were determined considering this ratio. The experiments were carried out in 3 replicates and samples were taken at 24 and 96 hours. At the end of 120 hours, samples were taken to determine the elimination values. CuNP accumulation amounts in the samples were measured by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrophotometer (ETAAS). For biomarker analysis, thiobarbituric acid (TBARS) and glutathione (GSH) levels and superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities were performed using CAYMAN ELISA kit. According to the study data, as CuNP concentration and application time increased, the amount of accumulation in Navicula cryptocephala also increased. Increasing-decreasing changes were observed in elimination. CuNP caused oxidative stress in N. cryptocephala and caused changes in TBARS and GSH levels. In addition, it caused increases in SOD activities and statistically significant decreases (P<0.05) in CAT and GPx activities.

The depletion of unique genetic resources and increased risk of extinction may result from hybridization between native and introduced species. In the present study, morphological and molecular analysis were performed on two putative natural interspecific hybrids of the genus Salmo and their parent species, Salmo labrax and Salmo munzuricus, collected from Uzunçayır Dam Lake, which is fed by Munzur and Pülümür streams. Molecular analyses revealed the presence of S. labrax in Uzunçayır Dam Lake for the first time. Phylogenetic analysis using the cytochrome b (Cytb) gene of mitochondrial DNA to determine the maternal origin revealed that hybrid individuals belonged to the same clades as S. labrax or S. munzuricus. Recombination activating gene 1 (Rag1) sequence of nuclear DNA was analyzed for paternal analysis and it was determined that hybrid individuals carried similar single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to S. labrax or S. munzuricus. These findings support that individuals derive from different parental species. Therefore, evidence from trout samples assumed to be natural hybrids in this study suggests interspecific hybridization between S. labrax and S. munzuricus, but further studies are required.
