‘I want to play too’: exploring the experiences of students with disabilities in inclusive physical education

    Şahin, Aykut; Karakaya, Yunus Emre

Although physical education (PE) classes are recognized as a critical setting for students with special needs (SSN) to develop physical literacy and social belonging, practices in integrated settings often fall short of this potential. In this study we utilized Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), to understand the lived experiences of SSN students participating in integrated PE classes in Turkish middle and high schools and to question inclusivity claims through the lens of ‘student voice’. The study group consisted of 31 students with special needs (visual, hearing, orthopedic, and neurological), selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The results revealed that despite a strong desire to ‘be included in the game’, students experienced a profound ‘inclusion illusion’. Findings were grouped under five themes: (1) Emotional meanings attributed to the physical education class, (2) The dual nature of experienced realities, (3) Spatial injustice and tokenism, (4) Teacher competence, (5) The ideal physical education teacher. Our findings suggest that current inclusion policies focus on spatial integration (physical placement) but fail to create a sense of legitimate participation and belonging. To address these systemic gaps, we recommend that Turkish policy makers and educators transition toward a social justice-focused pedagogy that positions students as ‘experiential experts’ in lesson co-design, ensuring that physical education moves beyond mere physical placement to achieve legitimate qualitative inclusion.

Sufi thought in the diwan of the French Christian poet Charles Vernay

    Kayaokay, İlyas

This article examines how the French Christian poet Charles Vernay (1842–1866) engaged with Ottoman Sufi poetic discourse in his Divan-ı Verne (1858), a collection of poems written in Ottoman Turkish and Persian. While openly preserving his Christian identity, Vernay frequently employs key Sufi concepts, including ‘tevhid’ (divine unity), ‘aşk-ı hakiki’ (mystical love), ‘irfan’ (gnosis), ‘hakikat’ (truth) and the ‘tarik’ (spiritual path). Through a close textual analysis of selected poems, this study explores the relationship between Vernay’s Christian identity and the Sufi vocabulary that shapes his poetic imagination. The findings demonstrate that Vernay’s use of Sufi terminology extends beyond conventional imitation of classical Ottoman poetry. He employs these concepts to articulate his own spiritual worldview while simultaneously referring to the Bible, Jesus Christ and the doctrine of the Trinity. Although Vernay adopts the metaphysical language of Ottoman Sufism, he does not reproduce its Prophet Muhammad-centred framework. Instead, he reinterprets Sufi concepts within a Christian religious horizon and constructs a spiritual discourse shaped by unity, love, truth and faith. Divan-ı Verne thus reveals how Ottoman Sufi poetic language could be appropriated across religious boundaries and provides new insight into intercultural literary exchange in the nineteenth-century Ottoman world.

Investigating the relationships between pre-service science teachers’ topic-specific personal and enacted pedagogical content knowledge

    Kılıç, Aygün

This study aimed to investigate pre-service science teachers’ (PSTs') PCK levels regarding celestial bodies and the relationships between PCK components. The pre-service teachers’ PCK was analyzed in two ways: personal PCK (pPCK) and enacted PCK (ePCK). PSTs' topic-specific pPCK represented their declarative knowledge of PCK regarding celestial bodies, and their topic-specific ePCK represented their enacted competencies in teaching this science topic in the classroom. Pre-service teachers’ pPCK and ePCK were examined through four components: science curriculum, students’ understanding, instructional strategy and method, and assessment. 22 PSTs participated in the study, and data on pre-service teachers’ PCK was collected through interviews, field observation notes, and teaching video records. The study used two rubrics to analyze the data obtained regarding the PSTs' pPCK and ePCK. Accordingly, PSTs' levels of pPCK/components and ePCK/components revealed idiosyncratic and topic-specific differences. Furthermore, their pPCK and ePCK interact and the internal and mutual relationships between pPCK components and ePCK components are topic-specific. This study provides comprehensive and valuable information for teacher education programs by revealing the dynamic interaction between pre-service teachers’ knowledge and actions. It also highlights the need for more teaching experiences from the early years of these programs to improve their classroom practice.

Flyting versus Karşılaşma: A Comparative Study of Verbal Duelling as a Form of Poetic Competition

    Demir, Ayşegül

This study compares two traditions of verbal duelling: flyting in Scotland and karşılaşma in Türkiye. Both forms of poetic competition use insults and ridicule to entertain, while displaying the poet’s wit and cultural knowledge. Flyting is characterized by direct insults, while karşılaşma uses indirect, literary language. Despite stylistic differences, these traditions share similar purposes and motivations such as asserting poetic authority, displaying linguistic skill, and reflecting societal values. This article highlights the importance of these traditions in reflecting different cultural values and practices across different contexts.

Does a university degree matter for wives? Investigating the relationship between husbands’ socioeconomic resources and wives’ labour force participation

    Acar, Sedat

The labour market engagement of women in traditionally oriented societies is frequently constrained by their husbands’ socioeconomic resources. The rise in women’s educational attainment plays a pivotal role in reshaping the gender-based division of labour and enhancing their labour force participation. Drawing on nationally representative cross-sectional data from the Turkish Income and Living Conditions Survey (2006–2022; N = 136,874), this study examines the moderating role of wives’ educational attainment in the association between husbands’ socioeconomic resources (income and education) and wives’ labour force participation. The interaction model reveals that the probability of labour force participation is higher for wives with university-educated husbands only among those who are university-educated themselves; in contrast, participation rates decline for non-university-educated wives. Among university-educated wives, labour force participation is markedly higher in educationally homogamous marriages than in hypogamous marriages. While the negative income effect attributed to husbands persists across both educational strata of wives, its magnitude is significantly attenuated among university-educated wives. These findings indicate that in Turkey, a university degree serves as a critical mechanism for married women to circumvent economic and cultural barriers to labour force participation, with homogamous marital unions further facilitating their engagement.

Airbnbfication and gentrification from the perspective of rent gap theory: the case of Beyoğlu, Istanbul

    Çobangil, Orçun; Ateş, Erdem

This paper examines how Airbnbification affects the rental market in Istanbul's historic Beyoğlu district using rent gap theory. Given Turkey's recent soaring inflation rates, special emphasis is placed on inflation, aligning with Neil Smith's focus on its impact on rent gap formation. Beyoğlu's history and urban development in the context of neoliberalisation of Istanbul are considered, highlighting why it alone hosts 15.36% of Turkey's Airbnb listings. The analysis proceeds in four stages: first, by comparing long-term rental incomes with Airbnb revenues; second, by assessing inflation and rental growth rates; third, using Pearson correlation to analyse inflation and Airbnbification; and finally, employing the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) to explore both short- and long-term relationships and Granger causality. These findings suggest Airbnb listings, rising rents, and inflation contribute to the ongoing rent gap, positioning Airbnbification as the latest phase of Beyoğlu's gentrification.

The Effect of the Health Literacy Levels of Teachers on Their Vaccine Hesitancy: The Example of Turkey

    Yeşiltepe, Akgün; Çal, Ayşe

Teachers assume important responsibilities in improving the health literacy levels of the society. Health literacy and vaccination are important prerequisites for health protection and promotion. This study aimed to investigate the effect of teachers’ health literacy levels on their vaccine hesitancy. This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The health literacy and vaccine hesitancy levels of the teachers were found to be moderate. A negative and weak significant relationship was observed between health literacy and vaccine hesitancy, indicating that as health literacy increases, vaccine hesitancy may decrease. In addition, it was revealed that general health perception and over-the-counter drug use are associated with health literacy, and age, income status, and place of residence are associated with vaccine hesitancy. The health literacy and vaccine hesitancy levels of teachers should be improved. As health literacy increases, vaccine hesitancy decreases, which is an important finding in terms of increasing the effectiveness of vaccination programs.

İkinci Katil [The Second Murderer]: A Turkish Adaptation of Shakespeare's Scottish Play, Macbeth

    Öğütcü, Murat

Serhat Yiğit’s İkinci Katil (2017) is a Turkish adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Reminiscent of Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead (1966), it focuses on minor characters and their otherwise disregarded and peripheral microcosms. However, different from the post-modern self-reflexivity of Stoppard’s play, Yiğit uses an Aristotelian model in his play. Through its concentration on hitherto insignificant minor characters, non-self-reflexive intertextuality, and non-Brechtian acting, İkinci Katil departs both from conventional Shakespearean tragedies and conventionalised avant-garde post-Shakespearean interpretations of these tragedies. The construction of the stage and scenery allows to construct and to deconstruct the play and the source text’s interplay of textual allusions by setting the story of Macbeth to the periphery and the story of the Second Murderer, Warden, to the centre of the action. Therefore, this article will analyse Yiğit’s İkinci Katil and illustrate how the play borrows, adapts and transforms Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Teaching Shakespeare digitally: the Turkish experience

    Öğütcü, Murat

Although teaching Shakespeare in Turkey naturally creates barriers of language, space and time, the use of digital humanities helped me to overcome these obstacles. My experiences at Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey, showed me that combining conventional methods of teaching Shakespeare in Turkey with digital tools helps to familiarise students with Shakespeare's plays both in the Early Modern English and Modern Turkish contexts. To motivate students to study Shakespeare's plays within and without the classroom environment, I used conventional methods like teacher-led assignments and methods including the use of social media and social projects which were then unconventional.

Evaluating occupational health and safety service quality by SERVQUAL: a field survey study

Demir, Pelin; Gul, Muhammet; Guneri, Ali Fuat

The adverse impact of occupational accidents and occupational diseases on the society have recently increased a lot since the industrial-oriented society is getting more and more widespread. Although attempts regarding occupational health and safety (OHS) increase in Turkey, they are still at an inadequate level. OHS experts prepare employees for a healthy and safer working environment, so that work accidents can be eliminated and employees can be healthy psychologically and physically. At the same time, the worksites can be prevented from being financially damaged and productivity can be improved. The aim of this study is to measure OHS service quality by the evaluations of OHS experts from various sectors and workplaces. In this way, the OHS performance is measured, the difference between perceptions and expectations of the OHS experts is determined and deficiencies are revealed. In the study, the OHS activities are examined in five dimensions using the SERVQUAL scale; tangibility, reliability, responsiveness, assurance and empathy. The questionnaire is carried out using a Likert-type five-point scale among 81 OHS experts from different sectors. In conclusion, SERVQUAL analysis is introduced as a useful tool for employers to better understand what they need to know about OHS services.

Designing the airport service with fuzzy QFD based on SERVQUAL integrated with a fuzzy multi-objective decision model

    Kayapınar, Sema; Erginel, Nihal

Airport service quality is a crucial issue in the transportation industry. Although many studies focus on service quality and measurement of the airports, only a small number of studies that consider linguistic expression and fuzzy approach exist in the literature. This study aims to propose a new integrated approach to develop airport service quality. An integrated approach involving fuzzy Quality Function Deployment (QFD) based on SERVQUAL is used to measure airport service quality and to determine fuzzy weights of technical design requirements. Firstly, passengers’ needs are prioritised by using the SERVQUAL method and gap scores, then QFD matrix is constructed by defining fuzzy relationships between passengers’ needs and expectations, and technical design requirements under imprecise knowledge. Technical design requirements are weighted by using fuzzy QFD matrix as fuzzy numbers. Finally, a fuzzy multiple objective decision model is proposed to select the significant technical design requirements with two objectives: maximising the total fuzzy weights of technical design requirements and minimising the fuzzy technical difficulty level under a fuzzy budget constraint. A two-phase approach is used to solve the constructed fuzzy multi-objective decision model. The final results indicate four design requirements named as ‘the number of information board’, ‘capacity of wi-fi’, ‘emergency help button and automation’, and ‘the number of the signboard’, which maximise the total fuzzy weights of technical design requirements and minimise the sum of the fuzzy technical difficulty of each design requirements under the fuzzy budget constraint. This study is a real-world application which was implemented at the Anadolu University Airport in Turkey.

A quantitative risk analysis by using interval type-2 fuzzy FMEA approach: the case of oil spill

    Akyuz, Emre; Celik, Erkan

Risk assessment in maritime domain is one of the most cited topics since maritime transportation poses potential hazard for human life, marine environment and property. To mitigate risk and enhance safety awareness in maritime transportation, safety researchers have been seeking proactive solutions. This article prompts a quantitative risk-based approach combining interval type-2 fuzzy sets (IT2FSs) with failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) to perform a comprehensive risk analysis. Thus, potential failure modes and their effects are revealed by calculating risk prioritisation numbers (RPNs). Whilst the FMEA method provides a robust risk analysing tool with relevant control options, the IT2FSs deals with ambiguity and vagueness of linguistic assessment of decision-makers through the FMEA. Hence, expert’s linguistic assessment in risk assessment can be transformed into useful information in terms of enhancing safety and pollution prevention in maritime industry. To demonstrate the proposed approach, potential failures and effects of a real shipboard oil spill case are handled. The findings show that incomplete information exchanged with local maritime authorities, malfunction of oil skimmer and poor organization of shoreline clean-up team  are the most important failures during case of oil spill. The proposed approach provides not only theoretical insight into the maritime transportation industry but also practical contributions to chemical/oil tanker safety and environmental protection by mitigating risk in terms of technical or operational aspects.
