Bernstein-smoothed estimation and bootstrap inference for the lower-tail Spearman's rho curve

Lyu, Guanjie; Ouimet, Frédéric; Susam, Selim O.

This paper studies a Bernstein-smoothed plug-in estimator for the lower-tail Spearman's rho curve, a rank-based measure of local concordance defined through a normalized copula integral over the lower-left square (Formula presented.). The estimator applies the lower-tail Spearman functional to the empirical Bernstein copula and introduces a degree parameter that controls finite-sample regularization. The contribution is target-specific estimation and inference for the lower-tail Spearman's rho curve rather than a new general-purpose copula estimator. We establish uniform strong consistency on compact intervals away from zero whenever (Formula presented.). Under a target-specific integrated Bernstein-bias condition and (Formula presented.), we derive functional weak convergence with the same first-order Gaussian limit as the empirical copula-based estimator; this degree regime includes (Formula presented.). For inference, we justify a smoothed beta bootstrap based on sampling from the empirical beta copula and construct pointwise confidence intervals from the absolute centred bootstrap root. Monte Carlo experiments for the Farlie–Gumbel–Morgenstern, Gaussian, Clayton, and Frank copulas assess pointwise coverage over the threshold grid and show that Bernstein smoothing generally reduces integrated variance and often lowers mean integrated squared error under weak to moderate dependence. Additional common-sample experiments compare the proposed estimator with the empirical beta and empirical checkerboard Bernstein copula estimators in terms of pointwise error, integrated error, computation time, selected degrees, numerical stability, and pointwise coverage. A sensitivity analysis shows that (Formula presented.) is a simple theoretically admissible default that avoids the most severe oversmoothing. A descriptive application to the Loss–ALAE insurance claims data illustrates how the lower-tail Spearman's rho curve can reveal local dependence features that are not captured by the global Spearman correlation.

The Strategic Use of Instructor Visibility in Educational Videos: An Eye-Tracking Data-Based Study

Türel, Yalın Kılıç; Alpsülün, Mustafa; Yuruk, Süleyman Eren; Aslan, Alper; Kokoç, Mehmet; Polat, Hamza; Öztürk Akca, Cemile; Kurşun, Engin

This study developed an exploratory heuristic decision-support framework for dynamically regulating instructor visibility in instructional videos based on learners’ eye-tracking data. Eye-movement data were collected from 40 university students using a Tobii Pro Fusion while viewing 16 explanatory and procedural instructional videos. Instructor and Learning Content Areas of Interest were analyzed using normalized eye-tracking indicators. Descriptive analyses were complemented by Wilcoxon signed-rank tests, binary logistic regression, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses. Learners allocated significantly greater visual attention to learning content than to the instructor across both video types. Logistic regression identified instructor attention percentage, visit-related metrics, and blink frequency as significant predictors of visibility decisions. ROC analysis showed that instructor attention percentage provided the highest discriminative performance, with an optimal threshold of approximately 30%. Findings suggest that instructor visibility may be particularly appropriate during introductory, summary, and conceptually demanding segments, providing empirically grounded, attention-aware guidance for adaptive instructional video interfaces.

Postural control impairment in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): The role of respiratory muscle weakness and spinal curvature

Topcuoğlu, Ceyhun; Ozel, Alp; Tutun Yumin, Eylem; Sertel, Meral; Tug, Tuncer

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with respiratory muscle dysfunction, postural alterations and balance impairment. However, the impact of respiratory muscle weakness on postural control and its relationship with spinal curvature and mobility remain insufficiently clarified. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to compare postural control in individuals with COPD with and without respiratory muscle weakness; to examine the relationship among spinal curvature, spinal mobility, postural control and respiratory muscle strength; and to determine the effect of respiratory muscle strength on postural control. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 41 clinically stable individuals with COPD aged 40–75 years. Respiratory muscle strength was assessed using a mouth pressure measurement device. Postural control and balance were evaluated with the Biodex Balance System and functional tests. Higher stability index values indicate greater postural sway and poorer balance performance, whereas lower values reflect better postural stability. Spinal curvature and mobility were assessed using the Spinal Mouse®. RESULTS: Individuals with respiratory muscle weakness showed significantly higher overall, anterior–posterior and medial–lateral stability indices, as well as worse eyes-open and eyes-closed firm-surface indices compared to those without weakness (p < 0.05). In participants with severe and very severe COPD, thoracic kyphosis angle was significantly associated with MIP, MIP% and multiple balance indices under different surface and visual conditions (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Respiratory muscle weakness is associated with impaired postural control and balance performance in individuals with COPD, and thoracic spinal curvature appears to be linked to both respiratory muscle strength and balance outcomes.

Impact of green innovation on environmental issues: Findings from BRICS-T countries based on spatial analysis

Han, Ayşegül; Pehlivan, Ceren; Konat, Gökhan; Koncak, Ahmet

This study examines the impact of green innovations on environmental sustainability in BRICS-T countries between 2008 and 2021. Using indicators such as renewable energy consumption, R&D investments, industrial design activities, and carbon emissions, the analysis employs both conventional and spatial panel estimation techniques. The findings reveal that investments in renewable energy play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and positively contribute to environmental sustainability. However, the effectiveness of environmental innovation policies and R&D expenditures in mitigating emissions remains limited, particularly in the short term. Additionally, industrial design activities are identified as a significant contributor to rising emissions, highlighting the need for a transition toward more sustainable industrial practices. The study also uncovers spatial dependencies among countries, demonstrating that carbon emissions in one nation can influence those in neighboring countries, emphasizing the necessity of regional cooperation and coordinated environmental policies. Based on these findings, the study provides policy recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of green innovations, stressing the importance of increasing investments in renewable energy, aligning R&D expenditures with environmentally sustainable technologies, and promoting sustainable industrial practices across BRICS-T countries.

Green synthesis is a prominent procedure used to easily and environmentally friendly fabricate nanostructures and nanoparticles (NPs), without complex instrumentation, intricate procedures, and harmful chemicals. This study investigated the green synthesis of silver NPs (AgNPs), with Aronia melanocarpa fruit extract as the reducing agent. Following synthesis optimization, AgNPs were characterized using a range of analytical techniques, including UV–Vis, XRD, SEM-EDX, BET, and TEM analyses. Based on the characterization results, an Ag/AgCl hybrid structure was formed. The Ag/AgCl NPs obtained were utilized as adsorbents to remove Cd(II) and Pb(II) heavy metals. The experimental factors that were optimized included pH (5.5), sample volume (5 mL), eluent type and concentration (2 M HNO3), adsorbent amount (5 mg), and extraction time (30 min). Under optimized conditions, the limits of detection were determined to be 9.6 and 4.8 µg/L for Pb(II) and Cd(II), respectively. These limits were established within a concentration range of 50–3,000 µg/L.

A flexible parameter estimation method for the Farlie-Gumbel-Morgenstern copula: a simulation study

    Susam, Selim Orhun

This research presents a minimum distance method based on the Bernstein empirical copula process for estimating the dependence parameter of the Farlie-Gumbel-Morgenstein copula. Also, this study examines its performance through a comprehensive Monte Carlo simulation study. The findings in this paper demonstrate that selecting the optimal degree of the Bernstein empirical copula has a significant impact on the performance of the new estimation method. The proposed estimator achieves optimal performance in terms of mean squared error (MSE) for the parameter range (Formula presented.) in small sample sizes, while outside this range, its performance varies depending on the degree of the Bernstein empirical copula. Finally, we apply the new method to real data for illustrative purposes.

Tailoring ZrWNb-Based Refractory High Entropy Alloys: A Multidirectional Characterization Through Elemental, Physical, Thermodynamic, and Nuclear Radiation Attenuation Properties

Güler, Ömer; Özkul, İskender; Almisned, Ghada; Sen Baykal, Duygu; Alkarrani, Hessa; Kilic, G.; Mesbahi, A.; Tekin, H.O.

This study explores the development and characterization of 18 novel ZrWNb[(X)(Y)] (where XY are Hf, Ta, Mo, V, Ti) refractory high entropy alloys (RHEAs) designed to enhance mechanical robustness, thermodynamic stability, and radiation shielding effectiveness. Through a rigorous analysis, we evaluated the elastic modulus, entropy, and enthalpy of mixing, atomic size difference, valence electron concentration, and the omega parameter to understand the alloys’ phase behavior and structural integrity. Our findings revealed a broad range of elastic modulus values, indicating diverse mechanical adaptability suitable for high-stress applications. The thermodynamic assessment highlighted several RHEAs with favorable phase stability, particularly ZrWNbTaHf and ZrWNbTiTaHf, which are poised for high-performance usage due to their balanced mixing entropy and enthalpy. This study also benchmarks the RHEAs against conventional alloys, with sample R1 exhibiting the lowest fast neutron effective removal cross section, underscoring its superior neutron shielding capabilities. Additionally, R1 demonstrated exceptional photon attenuation, as evidenced by its competitive half-value layer performance across an extensive energy spectrum. Collectively, these results position R1 as a standout candidate, offering a significant advancement in materials science for applications demanding stringent radiation shielding, such as in nuclear reactor environments and space exploration.

Studies on the improvement of thermal, dielectric and optical properties of poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate) by the addition of graphite oxide as fillers

    Barim, Esra

In this study, poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate) homopolymer (PTFEMA) was synthesized via free radical polymerization method, and its composites with graphite oxide (GO) were prepared to improve its dielectric and thermal properties. Thermogravimetric evaluation revealed that graphite oxide acts to limit thermal diffusion throughout the PTFEMA loaded graphite oxide (GO) composite, and hence, thermal stability of composites improved. While the initial decomposition temperature of pure PTFEMA was found to be 233°C from thermogravimetric analysis measurements, the initial decomposition temperature of PTFEMA containing 5 wt% graphite oxide was found to be 251°C. The glass transition temperatures of the composites increased from 76°C to 86°C due to the increase in the amount of graphite oxide added to PTFEMA. The dielectric properties of composites were investigated from 100 Hz to 10 kHz for different temperatures. While the dielectric constant, ε′, of pure PTFEMA at 1 kHz at room temperature was found to be 3.00, that of the PTFEMA containing 5 wt% GO was found 10.32. Therefore, graphite oxide doped PTFEMA composites may be suitable candidates for energy storage applications. The dc conductivity and dielectric loss factor of PTFEMA containing 5 wt% graphite oxide were seen to increase with temperature.

Forecasting daily natural gas consumption with regression, time series and machine learning based methods

Yucesan, Melih; Pekel, Engin; Celik, Erkan; Gul, Muhammet; Serin, Faruk

An effective short-term natural gas forecasting method contributes to social contributions and allows industrial chain elements to function effectively and minimize economic losses. We dealt with a comparative framework on the applicability of different methods in daily natural gas service (NGS) consumption forecasting. In this context, time series, machine learning, evolutionary and population-based approaches, and their hybrid versions are applied to the NGS data. Hybridized approaches are tested in the scope of NGS consumption forecasting for the first time in the literature in this study. The case of Turkey is handled, and its NGS data is used to demonstrate the comparative framework’s applicability. The comparative study is assessed in the lights of common forecasting accuracy measures of mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), R-squared (R2), and mean squared error (MSE). According to each method’s results, the seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average with exogenous regressors (SARIMAX) and artificial neural network (ANN) hybrid model provides the most dominant performance with respect to MAPE. The lowest error was obtained with a MAPE value of 0.357 in this hybrid model constructed under seven neurons in its ANN structure. This model is followed by another hybrid model, autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA)-ANN, with a MAPE value of 0.5 under nine neurons in terms of accuracy performance. The worst performance value belongs to the Genetic algorithm-ANN hybrid model with a MAPE value of approximately 26%.

Bioaccumulation of copper by Gammarus pulex (L., 1758): monitoring through a statistical modelling approach

Pala, Aysegul; Ince, Muharrem; Serdar, Osman

The aim of this study is to test freshwater gammarids as ecotoxicological biomarkers. Gammarids were collected from fresh water and adapted to the laboratory environment. Then, the influence of various variables was investigated. For monitoring and detecting the bioaccumulation level in Gammarus pulex exposed to controlled copper ions and to evaluate potential human and ecological risks, the use of G. pulex as sentinel indicators of water quality is one rational approach. Copper bioaccumulation rate and fate are currently not sufficiently studied. For optimization, the experimental conditions to ensure bioaccumulation level and to find the effects of various variables on proses, a Box–Behnken experimental design was performed. Used mentioned model with statistical underpinnings for Cu2+ ions bioaccumulation have been analyzed, tested and verified and the viability of G. pulex as a biomonitor. The variables’ optimum levels (temperature; 18.1, pH; 4.3, initial concentration of Cu2+ ions, mg L−1; 11.2 and exposure time, h; 42.2) were achieved by employing the quadratic regression model. Critical role of G. pulex in freshwater biomonitoring and their potential to be evaluated as biomarkers for Cu2+ ions was confirmed. It was also explored to see if G. pulex may serve as a potential tool for estimating aquatic quality.

Assessments of heavy metal contaminations of surface water and sediment of Pülümür Stream (Türkiye)

Kutlu, Banu; Çevik, Fatma; Çetindağ, Serdar

The primary considerations within aquatic ecosystems are water and sediment quality, rendering it imperative to assess their concentrations, pollution levels, origins, and ecological hazards. In this study, heavy metal concentrations in surface waters and sediments of the Pülümür Stream were investigated to assess the level, distribution, source of pollution and the associated human risks. Water and sediment samples from the river were collected monthly from February 2021 to January 2022 and examined using the Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP– MS) technique. Metal concentrations in the sediment followed a decreasing or derivative sequence of Fe > Al > Mn > Ni > Cr > Zn > Cu > Pb > As >Cd > Hg. The ecological indices of the stream water have low degrees of contamination by heavy metals. Igeo and EF showed that most of the sites are moderately to highly polluted due to Ni, and Cr, while PLI and PERI showed a progressive deterioration of the environment at site 9. Moreover, the modified hazard quotient (mHQ) indicates low ecological risk for Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Hg metals, while Ni, As and Cr reach high pollution at sediment sites. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that the presence of Zn, Cu, Pb, Hg, and Mn metals in the sediment analysis has a lithogenic source, and As, Ni, Cd, and Cr accumulate due to human activities, mainly domestic and agricultural irrigation wastes and mining wastes, all of which affect the aquatic environment. According to this study, more attention should be paid to the comprehensive monitoring of metals in the water and sediment for both aquatic biota and human risk of the Pülümür River.
