This study identified not only the wild plants collected for food purposes by local people of Karaisalı County in the Mediterranean Region, but also the uses and local names of these plants. Field study was carried out over a period of approximately 2 years (2008–2010). During this period, 76 vascular plant specimens were collected. Demographic characteristics of participants, vernacular plant names, edible parts and utilization methods of the plants were investigated and recorded. In the scope of the study, the plant species were collected; herbarium materials were prepared; and the specimens were entitled. In addition, the use-value of the species was determined and was calculated for the food plants included in the study. A total of 76 food plants belonging to 30 families were identified in the region. The most common families are: Asteraceae (12 plants), Lamiaceae (10 plants), Rosaceae (9 plants), Polygonaceae (5 plants), Apiaceae (4 plants). The study showed that the plants used are either eaten raw or ripe, cooked as vegetable dish, consumed as jam, consumed as coffee, as spice, frying in oil or baked to be served as dishes such as stew, pie made by roasting the leaves, prepared sour souce is added to food. During this ethnobotanical research, it was verified that wild edible plants play an important role in diet in Karaisalı. We examined whether the plants used had literature records or not. Varied usages of a number of plants have been recorded for the first time by us. Tree of those plant are endemic. The plant flora of Karaisalı is threatened by such factors as grazing, expansion of new agricultural lands, and unsustainable picking of plants to generate income. Steps should be taken immediately to ensure the inclusion of relevant flora within conservation designations.

The effect of hygrothermal aging on the glass and carbon reinforced epoxy composites for different stacking sequences

    Dogan, Akar; Arman, Yusuf

The present paper examines the effects of hygrothermal aging on the reinforced epoxy composites. The roles of reinforcement types and stacking sequence on the mechanical properties of composites under hygrothermal aging are investigated. Four different composite materials with different stacking sequence were produced. Unidirectional E-glass and carbon fabrics with an areal density 300 gr/m2 as reinforcement and epoxy as matrix were used. Composites were manufactured using vacuum-assisted resin infusion molding. In order to determine the mechanical properties of the composites, specimens were prepared according to the ASTM standards. The aging process was carried out in climatic test cabin at a temperature of 90oC and a humidity of 90%. As a result of the tests, while the tensile strength of the glass reinforced composites decreased with aging time, no significant change was observed for carbon and hybrid composites. On the other hand, the tensile strength decreased in the transverse direction for all types of composites. XPS analysis was used to understand the distribution of atoms on the surface of specimens.

Dynamic of solitary wave solutions in some nonlinear pseudoparabolic models and Dodd–Bullough–Mikhailov equation

    Ilhan, O.A.; Bulut, H.; Sulaiman, T.A.; Baskonus, H.M.

In this study, the modified exp (- Φ (η)) -expansion function method is used in constructing some solitary wave solutions to the Oskolkov–Benjamin–Bona–Mahony–Burgers, one-dimensional Oskolkov equations and the Dodd–Bullough–Mikhailov equation. We successfully construct some singular solitons and singular periodic waves solutions with the hyperbolic, trigonometric and exponential function structures to these three nonlinear models. Under the choice of some suitable values of the parameters involved, we plot the 2D and 3D graphics to some of the obtained solutions in this study. All the obtained solutions in this study verify their corresponding equation. We perform all the computations in this study with the help of the Wolfram Mathematica software. The obtained solutions in this study may be helpful in explaining some practical physical problems.

Yildirim, Ozal; Eristi, Bekis; Eristi, Huseyin; Unal, Sencer; Erol, Yavuz; Demir, Yakup

In this paper, a new generation Internet-based Power Quality Monitoring System (IPQMS) that transmits real-time power quality (PQ) data over the internet has been developed. The monitoring system has the ability to measure PQ parameters in accordance with the related standards. This monitoring system includes many hardware and software designs and presents an efficient structure. PQ parameters are determined by signal processing algorithms that are applied to the current and voltage signals continuously obtained from the electrical power network. These signal processing algorithms are performed as embedded functions in the FPGA device. The PQ data obtained from the measurement points are transmitted to a server by UDP/IP communication protocol that is implemented in the FPGA device. The monitoring, reporting and permanently storing tasks are accomplished with the real-time automation software and web applications that running on the server computer. With its innovative software and hardware designs, the proposed monitoring approach presents a very useful monitoring structure that can be used in the PQ field.

    F(T, R) theory of gravity

Salti, Mustafa; Korunur, Murat; Acikgoz, Irfan; Pirinccioglu, Nurettin; Binbay, Figen

We mainly focus on the idea that the dynamics of the whole universe may be understood by making use of torsion T and curvature R at the same time. The f(T,R)-gravity can be considered as a fundamental gravitational theory describing the evolution of the universe. The model can produce the unification of the general relativity (GR), teleparallel gravity (TPG), f(R)-gravity and f(T)-gravity theories. For this purpose, the corresponding Lagrangian density is written in terms of an arbitrary function of the torsion and curvature scalars. Furthermore, we use the absence/existence puzzle of relativistic neutron stars and thermodynamical laws as constraining tools for the new proposal.

Arrhythmia detection using deep convolutional neural network with long duration ECG signals

Yıldırım, Özal; Pławiak, Paweł; Tan, Ru-San; Acharya, U. Rajendra

This article presents a new deep learning approach for cardiac arrhythmia (17 classes) detection based on long-duration electrocardiography (ECG) signal analysis. Cardiovascular disease prevention is one of the most important tasks of any health care system as about 50 million people are at risk of heart disease in the world. Although automatic analysis of ECG signal is very popular, current methods are not satisfactory. The goal of our research was to design a new method based on deep learning to efficiently and quickly classify cardiac arrhythmias. Described research are based on 1000 ECG signal fragments from the MIT - BIH Arrhythmia database for one lead (MLII) from 45 persons. Approach based on the analysis of 10-s ECG signal fragments (not a single QRS complex) is applied (on average, 13 times less classifications/analysis). A complete end-to-end structure was designed instead of the hand-crafted feature extraction and selection used in traditional methods. Our main contribution is to design a new 1D-Convolutional Neural Network model (1D-CNN). The proposed method is 1) efficient, 2) fast (real-time classification) 3) non-complex and 4) simple to use (combined feature extraction and selection, and classification in one stage). Deep 1D-CNN achieved a recognition overall accuracy of 17 cardiac arrhythmia disorders (classes) at a level of 91.33% and classification time per single sample of 0.015 s. Compared to the current research, our results are one of the best results to date, and our solution can be implemented in mobile devices and cloud computing.

Anthocyanin profile of strawberry fruit as affected by extraction conditions

    Karaaslan, Nagihan M.; Yaman, Mehmet

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of extraction conditions to determine anthocyanin compounds in strawberry fruit. Anthocyanin profile of this fruit were determined via high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry. Flow rate of mobile phase, fragmentor potential, injection volume, and column temperature were applied to be optimum values as 0.5 mL min−1, 110 V, 5 µL, and 30°C, respectively. The extraction process was the important step in the isolation and identification of anthocyanins. For this purpose, anthocyanin contents in strawberry fruit were examined in terms of solvent type, extraction time, and liquid:solid ratio (v:w). The best extraction conditions in this fruit were found to be methanol as solvent, 30 min as extraction time and 1:1 as liquid:solid ratio (v:w). The results showed that the anthocyanin contents of strawberry fruit change by altering extraction conditions.

Trace Metal Levels in Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Cultured in Net Cages in a Reservoir and Evaluation of Human Health Risks from Consumption

Varol, Memet; Kaya, Gülderen Kurt; Alp, Sumru Anık; Sünbül, Muhammet Raşit

Although fish consumption has positive health effects, metals accumulated in fish can cause human health risks. In this study, the levels of ten metals in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farmed in the Keban Dam Reservoir, which has the biggest rainbow trout production capacity in Turkey, were determined and compared with the maximum permissible levels (MPLs). Also, human health risks associated with rainbow trout consumption were assessed. The metal concentrations in rainbow trout were found below the MPLs. The estimated daily intake of each metal was much lower than the respective tolerable daily intake. The target hazard quotient (THQ) for individual metal and total THQ for combined metals did not exceed 1, indicating no health risk for consumers. The cancer risk (CR) value for inorganic arsenic was within the acceptable lifetime risk range of 10−6 and 10−4. For carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects, the maximum allowable fish consumption rates were high enough to ensure the human health. According to these results, the consumption of rainbow trout farmed in the Keban Dam Reservoir does not pose a risk on human health.

Cypermethrin-induced in vitro alterations on oxidative stress and quality of salmo coruhensis spermatozoa

Kutluyer, Filiz; Kocabaş, Mehmet; Erişir, Mine; Benzer, Fulya

The use of insecticides has been increasing along with increasing agriculture activities and has caused deleterious environmental impacts. Non-target organisms in particular, including fish, are affected by pesticides. In this work, the impacts of cypermethrin (CYP) on sperm oxidative stress markers and sperm motility were investigated in vitro. The CYP concentrations were 0 μg L-1 control, ethanol), 1.025 μg L-1, 2.05 μg L-1 and 4.1 μg L-1. Lipid peroxidation [Malondialdehyde (MDA)], non-enzymatic antioxidants [glutathione (GSH)] and enzymatic [superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and catalase (CAT)] activities in sperm cells were examined for determination of oxidative stress status. Our findings showed that motility and survival of sperm cells significantly decreased with exposure to CYP. Biochemical assays revealed that CAT activity and levels of MDA and, GSH increased in spermatozoa based on CYP concentration while activity of GSH-Px and SOD decreased. Consequently, spermatozoa were highly sensitive to CYP exposure. It can be deduced that CYP has the potential to disrupt sperm quality and to cause to oxidative stress in sperm cells of S. coruhensis.

    Ciancio, A.; Baskonus, H.M.; Sulaiman, T.A.; Bulut, H.

In this study, the modified exp (- ϕ(η)) -expansion function method is utilized in acquiring some new results to the coupled nonlinear Maccari’s system. The Maccari’s system is a nonlinear model that describes the dynamics of isolated waves, confined in a small part of space, in various fields such as hydrodynamic, plasma physics and nonlinear optics. We construct some new results with a complex structure to this model, such as; the trigonometric and hyperbolic function solutions. Under the suitable choice of the values of parameters, we plot the 2D, 3D and the contour graphs to some of the obtained solutions in this study. We observed that our results may be helpful in detecting the movement of an isolated wave in a small space to some practical physical problems.

Cattani, Carlo; Sulaiman, Tukur Abdulkadir; Baskonus, Haci Mehmet; Bulut, Hasan

In this paper, we construct a family of wave solutions to the doubly dispersive equation, such as topological, non-topological, singular, compound topological-non-topological bell-type and compound singular, soliton-like, singular periodic wave and exponential function solutions. These analytical solutions are obtained by using the extended sinh-Gordon equation expansion method and the modified exp (- φ(ζ)) -expansion function method. The doubly dispersive equation is an important nonlinear physical model describing the nonlinear wave propagation in the elastic inhomogeneous Murnaghan’s rod. Under a suitable choice of parameters, the 2D, 3D and contour graphics to the reported results are also plotted.

Assessment of pollution potential of the Hasangazi chromite pit (Tunceli, Turkey): implications for the natural environment

Çimen, Okay; Öztüfekçi Önal, Ayten; Akyol, Eylem Akarsu

The Hasangazi chromite pit is an abandoned mine located to the east of the town of Pülümür (Tunceli, Turkey). The surface water that circulates in the pit flows into the Pülümür stream via the Turnadere creek. The quality of the surface water and soil from the region is important regarding the ecosystem in the Tunceli area. The open pit operations in the chromite deposits may be the cause of toxic element enrichments. To understand the effects of such pits, samples from the sediments, soil, waste material, and surface water were collected from the Hasangazi pit and its surrounding area. Samples were mineralogically and geochemically analyzed by XRD, ICP-OES, and ICP-MS methods. Mineralogical analyses showed the presence of chrysotile and plagioclase in the sediment and soil samples. These samples are also enriched in toxic elements, e.g., Cr, Ni, and Co. In particular, the Cr and Ni concentrations exceed the limits of soil pollution regulation of Turkey and the US Environmental Protection Agency. Overall the Cr, Ni, and chrysotile contents demonstrate the impact of the abandoned pit and the ultramafic rocks. Moreover, the surface water samples in the dry season have Zn concentrations above the toxic levels that may have been derived from the volcanic rocks. Environmental remediation precautions should immediately be taken around this inactive pit.

Tanyol, Mehtap; Ogedey, Aysenur; Oguz, Ensar

This study examines the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) from landfill leachate generated from the municipal landfill site of Bingol, Turkey. The effect of parameters such as current density, pH, and inter-electrode distance during the electrocoagulation (EC) process on COD removal of the process was investigated. Moreover, for COD removal, the energy consumption and operating costs were calculated for iron electrode under the EC conditions. COD removal efficiency was 72.13% at the current density of 16 mA m-2, pH of 8.05, and the inter-electrode distance of 9 mm at the detention time of 60 min with iron electrode and the COD concentration was reduced from 6,100 mg L-1 to 1,700 mg L-1 by EC. The highest value of the electrical energy and electrode consumptions per kg of COD in the optimum conditions were determined as 0.055 kWh kg-1 COD and 3.43 kg kg-1 COD and the highest operating cost value was found to be 1.41 US$ kg-1 COD for 0-60 min time intervals.

Evaluation of anesthetic potential of rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora) oil as a new anesthetic agent for goldfish (Carassius auratus)

Kizak, Volkan; Can, Erkan; Danabaş, Durali; Can, Şafak Seyhaneyildiz

The aim of this research was to investigate the efficacy of rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora) essential oil (EO) as a new herbal anesthetic compared with camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) EO and commonly used chemical agent 2-phenoxyethanol (2-PE) on goldfish (Carassius auratus). The anesthetic efficacies of these herbal EOs and 2-PE were evaluated in goldfish with mean body weight of 7.36 ± 0.77 g. Fish were exposed to each anesthetic concentrations and the lowest effective concentrations (LECs) were established according to deep anesthesia (AD < 3 min) and full recovery (RF < 5 min) times. RD and CP showed anesthetic characteristics and induced AD. The LECs for each anesthetic were established at 250 μl L−1 for RD (AD; RF → 171 ± 2.28 s; 297 ± 7.69 s), 250 μl L−1 for CP (AD; RF → 129 ± 4.18 s; 291 ± 2.81 s) and 700 μl L−1 for 2-PE (AD; RF → 177 ± 2.35 s; 214 ± 4.93 s). At concentrations of 50, 100, 150, 200 μl L−1 for RD, 50, 100, 150 μl L−1 for CP and 400, 500 μl L−1 for 2-PE failed to induce AD in goldfish. There were significantly differences found among RD, CP and 2-PE concentrations in terms of induction and recovery times (p < 0.05). The fastest AD and RF were obtained by 300 μl L−1 CP (120 ± 1.94 s) and 600 μl L−1 2-PE (190 ± 4.34 s), respectively. Fish exposed to 300 μl L−1 RD and 800 μl L−1 2-PE took slightly longer to achieve AD than 300 μl L−1 CP. Induction and recovery times for EOs and 2-PE were significantly dependent on concentrations. Negative relationships was recorded between AD and RF for all anesthetics. No mortality or adverse effects occurred and fish stayed calm during trials. Results showed that RD was found to be an effective anesthetic as well as CP for goldfish and can be used at least 3-fold lower concentrations than 2-PE. In conclusion, rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora) EO, as a new potential anesthetic for fish, proved to be an effective natural agent resulting in rapid induction and recovery.

H-curvature tensors on IK-normal complex contact metric manifolds

    Turgut Vanli, Aysel; Unal, Inan

IK-normal complex contact metric manifolds have some important properties. There are several applications of this kind of contact manifolds in theoretical physics. In this paper, we studied on H-curvature tensors for IK-normal complex contact metric manifolds. We have shown that there is no IK-normal complex contact metric manifold with constant sectional curvature and an IK-normal complex contact metric manifold is not Ricci semi-symmetric.

A fuzzy AHP and electre method for selecting stabilizing device in ship industry

Demirel, Hakan; Balin, Abit; Çelik, Erkan; Alarçin, Fuat

Roll stabilizer systems are studied for different types of ships by many researchers. It is well known that roll motion is caused by external disturbances (wave, wind etc) and large roll motion can cause capsizing easily. In addition, undesirable roll motion effect badly crew performance and passenger comfort. So, roll reduction has an important role for all types of ships. In our study, we proposed a fuzzy AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) and ELECTRE (Elemination and Choice Translating Reality English) method for selecting the most effective roll stabilizing system for a trawler type fishing vessel. Alternatives and criteria in relation to the stabilizers are determined by experts’ experiences and literature review. This paper intends to give a comprehensive procedure for determining the most suitable roll motion stabilizing system of trawler for safety and efficiency fishing in the open literature.

Preliminary study on age, growth and reproduction of mustelus mustelus (Elasmobranchii: Carcharhiniformes: Triakidae) inhabiting the gulf of Iskenderun, north-eastern mediterranean sea

    Ozcan, Ebru Ifakat; Başusta, Nuri

Background. Shark populations within the eastern Mediterranean are declining due to overfishing. Unfortunately, our knowledge on the biology of sharks and specifically dogfishes within eastern Mediterranean is extremely limited due to the lack of landings. Mustelus mustelus (Linnaeus, 1758) is one of such deficiently known cartilaginous fishes and the relevant information on its age and growth in the eastern Mediterranean is missing. The understanding of growth and reproductive behaviour is important for management and conservation of this species. The presently reported study was intended to determine age, growth, and some reproductive parameters of Mustelus mustelus collected in the Gulf of Iskenderun, the north-eastern Mediterranean Sea. Materials and methods. In this study, a total of 155 Mustelus mustelus were caught in the north-eastern Mediterranean Sea between March 2012 and October 2015. Fish age was determined based on band counts of sectioned vertebrae. The periodicity of band pair formation was examined using the marginal increment analysis. Growth parameters for all specimens were then determined by fitting the observed and the length-at-age data using the von Bertalanffy Growth Equation. The size and age at which 50% of both sexes reached maturity was estimated by a logistic model for maximum likelihood process and the gonadosomatic index was determined. Results. The total length and weight of the specimens examined ranged from 44.3 to 162.6 cm and from 241.3 to 12 060 g, respectively. The presently reported study provides new maximum lengths (162.6 cm) for M. mustelus from the north-eastern Mediterranean. The fish studied represented age groups from 0 through 25. The observed sex ratio was 1 ÷ 1.04 (females ÷ males). Von Bertalanffy growth parameters were estimated to be L∞ = 195.13 cm, W∞ = 20 060 g, K = 0.06, and t0 = −4.27 for all specimens. Length–weight relation was found to be W = 0.0027L3.0054 (R2 = 0.98) and 95% confidence intervals of b = 2.936–3.075, t-test P < 0.05. All studied specimens of M. mustelus represented isometric growth (b = 3). Condition factor ranged from 0.148 to 2.87 for females and from 0.103 to 1.024 for males. The length at 50% maturity and the age at 50% maturity were 109 cm and 8 in females and 92 cm and 7 in males, respectively. It was observed that mean GSI values were low in September and July, reaching a maximum in January to February. Conclusion. The results of this study could give useful insight for management plans and conservation of M. mustelus in the Mediterranean coast of Turkey.

Determination of effective constitutive parameters of inhomogeneous metamaterials with bianisotropy

Hasar, Ugur Cem; Buldu, Gul; Kaya, Yunus; Ozturk, Gokhan

A recursive algorithm is proposed to accurately extract the electromagnetic parameters of isotropic/bianisotropic metamaterial (MM) slabs of inhomogeneous structures. The algorithm is based on the recursive calculations of measured/ simulated forward and backward scattering (S-) parameters from previously extracted wave impedances and refractive indices of each homogeneous layer (except the analyzed intermediate layer) by a suitable retrieval method. There are two main advantages of our proposed method over existing extraction algorithms. First, it could retrieve the electromagnetic parameters of both isotropic and bianisotropic MM slabs. Second, it is applicable for electromagnetic parameter extraction of inhomogeneous structures. For validation of our method and assessing its accuracy over existing extraction methods, we used the simulation results of various inhomogeneous structures constructed by different isotropic/bianisotropic MM slabs (split-ring-resonator (SRR), SRR-wire, omega, and omega-wire). For completeness, the effects of noise present in S-parameters and iterative error (by increasing the value of iteration numbers) are examined to test the robustness of the proposed algorithm.
