Ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, has been detected in the aquatic environment, but little is known about its effects on fish and other aquatic organisms. This study aimed to investigate the effect of ibuprofen on micronucleus levels in erythrocytes and whole-body antioxidant parameters of carp (Cyprinus carpio) fry. Fish were exposed to immersion in two different doses of ibuprofen concentrations (50 and 250 μg/L) for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h and 14 days. No mortalities occurred in any group during the test. Abnormal behaviours such as irregular swimming, loss of balance and hanging vertically in the water were observed in some fish exposed to acute toxicity. In this study, a significant increase in the micronucleus number of red blood cells was observed throughout the study period (p < 0.05). Antioxidant parameters were measured spectrophotometrically. Results obtained showed that ibuprofen significantly increased (p < 0.05) malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, glutathione S-transferase (GST) and catalase (CAT) activities, but decreased (p < 0.05) the glutathione (GSH) levels of whole-body carp fry in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, ibuprofen significantly increased MDA, GST and CAT levels, but increased the GSH levels of whole-body carp fry in a time-dependent manner. These results indicate that carp fry is sensible to human pharmaceutical agents in aquatic environments. The manner and the constructed interactions between ibuprofen and two protein targets (immunoglobin and haemoglobin) were investigated using molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation. The results indicated that ibuprofen could affect the haemoglobin activity. Finally, absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity analysis was performed to examine the drug potential of the studied molecules.

The present study focuses on understanding the role of different antioxidants in plant defense against oxidative stress caused by fenoxaprop-p-ethyl herbicide. Besides ameliorative effect of exogenously applied salicylic acid (SA) and selenium (Se) on fenoxaprop-p-ethyl-induced toxicity was examined in Avena sativa L. It was determined that the MDA (malondialdehyde) content in the groups to which only herbicide was applied was higher than that of the groups to which SA and Se applied together with the herbicide. In plants exposed to fenoxaprop-p-ethyl, the activities of peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione reductase (GR) and content of glutathione (GSH) increased in the treatment groups compared to the control groups. The antioxidant activity increased in the control and treatment groups that were pre-treated with SA and Se compared to the groups that were not pre-treated with SA and Se. While catalase activity (CAT) decreased in SA pre-treated plants, it increased in Se pre-treated plants. These results indicate that the fenoxaprop-p-ethyl induces various plant defense responses in target plants and that treatment with exogenous SA and Se can increase stress resistance by altering these responses.

We evaluated antioxidant responses of Oncorhynchus mykiss, experimentally exposed to different concentrations of hidrogen peroxide (H2O2). Different concentrations of H2O2 (50 and 100 ppm) were administrated to the fish for 30, 60 and 90 min. Samples of the gill were collected at the end of the experiment, and analysed for their oxidant antioxidant status, including the malondialdehyde (MDA) level, the catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity as well as the reduced glutathione (GSH) concentration. Results obtained showed that H2O2 significantly increased MDA level. Compared to controls, GSH level and GSH-Px and CAT activities were significantly reduced in the fish that were exposed to different concentrations of H2O2. The current data suggest that H2O2 has an oxidative-stress-inducing potential in fish. The various parameters studied in this investigation can also be used as biomarkers of exposure to H2O2.
