Characteristics of the growth rate, fatty acid profile, and shell content of the freshwater snail Viviparus contectus (Millet, 1813)

Kocabaş, Filiz Kutluyer; Kizak, Volkan; Özçiçek, Esin; Kocabaş, Mehmet; Yilmaz, Ökkeş

Freshwater snails are a nutritious food source, providing vital amino acids, minerals, and protein with low lipid levels. Hence, the adaptation ability, growth rate, fatty acid (FA) profile, and shell content of Viviparus contectus were determined. Biometric measurements were recorded for 6 months. Over the 6-month cultivation period, specific growth rates were recorded as 0.32% · day-1 for shell length and 0.92% · day-1 for body weight. The FA profile of the freshwater snail included a total of 32 compounds with saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated FAs represented by 13, 10, and 9 types, respectively. Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) exhibited the highest concentration, followed by saturated fatty acids (SFAs) s at 35.14% and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) at 14.57%. Stearic acid (C18:0), erucic acid (C22:1 n-9), and arachidonic acid (C20:4 n-6) were determined as the most abundant FAs within the saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated FAs classes, respectively. The energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy spectra analysis revealed that the shell powder composition consisted of the elements, such as carbon, oxygen, calcium, iron, manganese, and silicium. Overall, V. contectus showed a clear increase in growth over the cultivation period, and future studies are needed to obtain the best culture conditions and intensive production of the species.

Relative Efficiencies of Live, Dry and Mixed Food Diets for Larval Rearing of Tigris Scraper (Capoeta umbla) and the Influence of Stocking Density on Fry Growth Characteristics

Gün, Abdulselam; Kızak, Volkan; Gündüz, Fatih

In this research, larval growth features by applying different diets and growth characteristics of fry at different stocking densities were studied under controlled conditions for the Tigris scraper (Capoeta umbla). In the first experiment, the growth and survival rates of Tigris scraper postlarvae were evaluated under three different diet regimes over 21 days. The highest mean total length was 24.04±0.27 mm in the group L1 fed solely Artemia nauplii, and the lowest mean total length was 17.89±0.16 mm in the group L2 fed only dry feed. The highest mean specific growth rate was in the L1, and the lowest mean specific growth rate was in the L2. In the second experiment in which the growth characteristics of fry were investigated at different stocking densities for 98 days, the highest mean live weight was found in S1 with 2.819±0.157 g and the lowest mean live weight was determined as 0.859±0.073 g in S5. The highest mean specific growth rate was in S1, while the lowest rate was in S5. High stocking densities were found to be disadvantageous for growth of C. umbla fry. The findings suggest that successful rearing of Tigris scraper postlarvae and fry is feasible under controlled conditions.

Alterations of Growth Performance and Blood Chemistry in Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis Nuoticus) Affected by Copper Sulfate in Long-Term Exposure

Mutlu, Ekrem; Aydin, Seyit; Kutlu, Banu

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of copper sulfate (CuSO4(5 H2O)) on the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Median (LC50) and minimum (LC1O) lethal concentrations of copper sulfate on Nile tilapia were determined via acute tests. LC50 values of copper sulfate for the 48th, 72nd and 96th hours were 13.15, 12.95 and 12.85 mg/L, respectively. LC10 values of 12, 11 and 9.5 mg/L were obtained for similar exposure periods (48th, 72nd and 96th hours), respectively. The effects of 1.5 mg/L dose of copper sulfate on growth rate, gross clinical observations and blood biochemical parameters of Nile tilapia were evaluated after 35, 65 and 95 days of exposure periods. The differences of growth rates between control and copper sulfate-exposed groups were not significant (P>0.05) at the end of 35, 65 and 95 days. Continuous exposure of Nile tilapia to 1.5 mg/L concentration of copper sulfate in water solution for three periods (35, 65 and 95 days) decreased the total protein, albumin, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), glucose (except the elevation in the exposed group at the end of 95 days period), magnesium (Mg+2), calcium (Ca+2), iron (Fe+2), potassium (K+), sodium (Na+1), chloride (Cl-) and phosphate values in serum. The cholesterol, low density lipid (LDL), triglyceride, globulin, creatinine, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, uric acid and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentrations in the serum increased in copper sulfate-exposed fish.

Effects of Intensive and Semi-Intensive Rearing on Growth, Survival, and V-Shaped (Lordotic) Skeletal Deformities in Juvenile Gilthead Sea Bream (Sparus aurata)

    Can, Erkan

Intensive production can reduce production costs and improve efficiency of larvae culture. This study compared the effects of intensive and semi-intensive production on growth, survival, and V-shaped skeletal deformities in juvenile gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata). At the end of the 50-day study, survival was 68.01 +/- 0.8%, mean weight was 1.32 +/- 0.03 g, and lordosis was 32% among juveniles raised in the intensive system. Survival and mean weight were significantly higher, 92.06 +/- 1.1% and 1.61 +/- 0.02 g, respectively, among juveniles raised in the semi-intensive system, and none had lordosis (p<0.05). Results suggest that semi-intensive systems are more advantageous than intensive for rearing sea bream juveniles.

Comparison of Growth Performance, Gonadal Structure and Erythrocyte Size in Triploid and Diploid Brown Trout (Salmo trutta fario L, 1758)

Kizak, Volkan; Güner, Yusuf; Türel, Murat; Kayim, Murathan

The aim of this study was to compare growth, gonadal structure and red blood cell sizes of triploid and diploid brown trout (Salmo trutta fario). Triploidy was induced by providing a heat shock treatment to the fertilized eggs. From the 18th month post-fertilization triploid (TBT) and control diploid (CBT) brown trout groups were investigated up to 32nd month. Survival, specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio, condition factor, relative growth rate, absolute growth rate, gonadosomatic index, hepatosomatic index and carcass yield were determined in both groups. It has been determined that the triploid fish showed greater live weight than diploid fish despite the difference was not significant (P>0.05). In triploid group triploidisation success was obtained as 95% and male/female ratio was found as 44.4-55.6%. The red blood cells were significantly larger in triploids than diploid ones (P<0.05). Regarding histological section of gonads, triploidy resulted in reduced gonadal development in female, while triploid males seem to exhibit normal gonadal development. Our results suggest that since triploid females could grow more than males, the growth performance studies on triploid brown trout should be performed with all-female stocks under fish farming practices especially for the production of large size trout.

The Effects of Different Dosage of Kefir with Different Durations on Growth Performances and Antioxidant System in the Blood and Liver Tissues of Coruh Trout (Salmo coruhensis)

Can, Erkan; Kurtoglu, Ilker Zeki; Benzer, Fulya; Erisir, Mine; Kocabas, Mehmet; Kizak, Volkan; Kayim, Murathan; Çelik, Huseyin Tugrul

The objective of the present work is to examine the effects of different doses (0, 10, 20 and 40 g kg(-1) fish diet mass) of kefir on growth performance and oxidant-antioxidant status in the blood and liver tissues of Coruh trout, Salmo coruhensis, in different periods (2 and 3 months). In this study, survival was more than 88.3%, and irrespective of dietary kefir levels at the end of the study. There were no significant differences in SGR (Specific growth rate), FCR (Feed conservation rate), CF (Condition factor) among fish fed diets with 0, 10, 20 and 40 g kg(-1) kefir, however, these growth values were significantly different in terms of durations between 2-month and 3-month treatment (P<0.05). Our results indicated that TAS (Total Antioxidant Status) and TOS (Total Oxidant Status) in blood tissues reduced with kefir treatment at the end of third month (P<0.05). Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in liver decreased in all groups compared with control group and a considerable extent decrease was observed in 40 g dose of kefir treatment at the end of third month. The data obtained from this experiment indicated that the same dose of kefir was more effective at the end of 3-month treatment than 2-month treatment (P<0.001). Although there was no statistical difference among groups, an increase in the glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) enzyme activity was observed in all groups compared to control groups. While catalase (CAT) activity decreased in all groups compared to control group at the end of second month (P<0.01), the decrease was insignificant level at the end of third month. In glutathione (GSH) levels, statistical differences were no observed in all groups compared to the control group with 2-month treatment while there were significant increases with 3-month treatment (P<0.001). It was concluded that kefir could play an antioxidant role and its effectiveness depended on dosage and time of application in Coruh trout, S. coruhensis.

Kizak, Volkan; Guner, Yusuf; Turel, Murat; Can, Erkan; Kayim, Murathan

Rainbow trout is an intensively cultured species because of their more cultivable character than brown trout. Culture of brown trout could not be expanded due to low growth performance of brown trout compared to rainbow trout. This experiment was conducted in a commercial trout farm, Aegean area (Turkey). Growth performances and survivals of rainbow and brown trouts from fry to fingerling was observed for 155 days. Growth performances, feed conversion rates (FCR) and survivals were determined. Initial weights of rainbow and brown trouts were 0.1 +/- 0.01 g. Final weights were 26.5 +/- 5.19 and 12.97 +/- 2.74 g, respectively at the end of the experiment. Survival and FCR of rainbow and brown trouts were 83.9, 80 and 0.59, 0.61% respectively. As a result, there is a similarity between these two trout species in point of survivals and FCR's although, growth performance was obviously better than brown trout in early development of rainbow trout.

The Effects of Different Feeds under the Same Salinity Conditions on the Growth and Survival Rate of Artemia

Kayim, Murathan; Ates, Mehmet; Elekon, Hasan Alper

This study reports effects of 4 different feeds under same salinity conditions on feeding of anemia in terms of growth and survival rate. The feeds comprised of four groups (Group A: -16% Selco + 80% Headstart + 4% Molasses mixture feed; Group B: -85% Chlorella + 15% Molasses mixture feed; Group C: 50% Chlorella + 50% Headstart mixture feed and Group D: -100% Chlorella feed). Through stabilizing temperature, oxygen, pH and salinity values as general water parameters and replacing 10% sea water from the tank on daily basis, the survival rate and the growth in length of the anemia were analysed as well as the changes in nitrite content in the water. The results showed that the highest increase of 1400 mu in anemia with average pre-test length of 450 mu was observed on feed C. The highest rate of 58.33% survival was recorded on feed D. Similarly, the highest nitrite of 1.50 mg L-1 was measured in trial tank containing artemia fed on feed A and least nitrite generation of 0.45 mg L-1 was noted in trial tank containing anemia fed on feed C.

The effects of commercial diets supplemented with mannanoligosaccharide (MOS) and vitamin B12 on the growth and body composition of the shabbout fries (Tor grypus H. 1843)

    Atar, Hasan Huseyin; Ates, Mehmet

Four hundred shabbout fries (Tor grypus L. 1758), with average initial weight of 0.95+/-0.02 g and total average length of 4.10+/-0.05 cm, were fed for a period of 90 days commercial feed with addition of mannanoligosaccharide (MOS) and vitamin B-12. The shabbouts were divided into four different groups and fed by different feeds (Control, Group A with MOS, Group B with vitamin B-12, Group C with the combination of MOS + vitamin B-12). The effects of feeding through MOS and vitamin B-12 in different proportions on growth in view of live weight and total length, survival rate, feed conversion, condition factor and protein efficacy were studied. The best growth in view of live weight of 4.51+/-0.16 g and length of 7.71+/-0.08 cm was maintained through vitamin B-12 in Group B. As a consequence, the growth parameters of the shabbout fries fed through commercial feeds with the addition of MOS and vitamin B-12 in different doses under empirical conditions showed affirmative effects on the survival rate, feed assessment, condition factor and protein efficacy.
