The present study focused on changes in the C-reactive protein (CRP) and adrenomedullin (ADM) levels in the liver and gill tissues of Capoeta umbla as biomarkers of environmental pollution and ecosystem health in inland waters of Tunceli (Turkey). The CRP levels in liver and gills were not significantly changed in March and September at every site (p>0.05) except for site 3 in gill tissues (p<0.05). The results of statistical analysis indicate that significant differences in CRP levels were found in liver and gills among sites (p<0.05), but no changes in the gills at March (p>0.05). In March, ADM levels in gills and liver were statistically changed among sites (p<0.05), while no statistical changes were determined in September (p>0.05). The results of this study indicated that CRP levels in the tissues of the C. umbla could be utilized as a significant bioindicator for disease pathogenesis in fish infections.

This is the first study about removal of lead (Pb(II)) from energy drinks. In this paper, food waste, namely eggshell (hydroxyapatite) utilization, was used to remove Pb(II) from mineral water and energy drinks. Mineral water and energy drinks were chosen for removal of lead since the latter is severely hazardous to human health even in small amounts. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was performed to optimize the application process by practice of the quadratic model united with the Central Composite Design (CCD) and quadratic combined program was utilized to study the most effective parameters on aforementioned liquids. Through the application of variance analysis (ANOVA) factors critical to removing of lead were identified for each experimental design response. Maximum adsorption capacity of eggshell was achieved as 923 mg g(-1) for Pb(II). The obtained optimum conditions were applied to drinks. Results showed that used adsorbent was quite effective in removing Pb(II) from drinks. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2017Scopus SJRQ3The Effect of Porosity and Cu Rate on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Co Alternative Powder Metallurgy Compound
Çelik, Ertugrul; Aslan, Ali Kemal
Cu-Ni-MX1480 powder compound were prepared at six different alloy ratios and cold pressed with a pressure of 300 MPa. Then 12 samples were obtained by hot pressing at 700 degrees C with 20 MPa pressure and at 800 degrees C with 30 MPa pressure for 4 minutes in a vacuum atmosphere hot pressing machine. Porosity ratios of samples were calculated by the different between theoretical density and measured density of samples. Effect of porosity on microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated by performing SEM, XRD, hardness measurements and TRS tests. It was observed that as a result of increased hot pressing parameters and increased Cu ratio, porosity ratio was decreased and better mechanical properties achieved.

Mutlu, Ekrem; Kutlu, Banu
In this study, the preliminary findings obtained from 3 sampling points, which represent the whole, on Maruf Irrigation Dam, which is located in Boyabat district of Sinop province, for 12 months between September 2015 and August 2016 were examined. The parameters monitored are temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, electrical conductivity, total hardness, total alkalinity, chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, and dissolved anions and cations (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, ammonium, nitrate, phosphate, chloride, sulfate, and sulfite). Because of its low dissolved ionic matter content, Maruf Dam was characterized as an alkali dam with mid-hard water and low electrical conductivity. In terms of parameters A and B of Surface Water Quality Management Regulation, the dam is considered high-quality and unpolluted. Besides the irrigation purposes, for which the barrage was constructed, the dam can also be used for aquaculture, animal breeding, and farming needs.

An eight-week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of total (100%) replacement of dietary fish oil with alternative lipid sources in juvenile rainbow trout. Six iso-nitrogenous and iso-lipidic experimental diets were formulated: CO (14%) -cod liver oil; SSO (14%) -safflower seed oil; SBO (14%) -soybean oil; LO (14%) -linseed oil; SBO (7%) + LO (7%) -a blend of soybean oil and linseed oil; and SSO (7%) + LO (7%) -a blend of safflower seed oil and linseed oil. Growth performance [specific growth rate (SGR), weight gain (WG), food conversion ratio (FCR) and survival rate (SR)], growth hormones [growth hormone (GH-I), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and insulin-like growth factor-II (IGF-II)], immune transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) and antioxidant [superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), catalase (CAT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST)] response, and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) mRNA levels were determined in muscle and liver. Our data indicated that final weight, weight gain, FCR and SGR showed significant difference among the six dietary treatments (P<0.05) while there were no significant differences in survival rate between the rainbow trout from supplement fed groups and control group. HSP70 mRNA level expression in muscle was higher in fish fed SSO (P<0.05) while highest level in liver was obtained from fish fed SBO compared to the other treatments (P<0.05). There were no significant differences among treatments for TGF-beta mRNA expression level in muscle and liver. In conclusion, growth performance and expression levels of growth hormones, antioxidants, HSP70, except TGF-beta were affected by five separate lipid sources. In addition, LO positively increased growth performance of juvenile rainbow trout by means of preventing oxidative stress and HSP70 and, enhanced expression of growth hormone related gene.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2017Scopus SJRQ1Plant intelligence based metaheuristic optimization algorithms
Akyol, Sinem; Alatas, Bilal
Classical optimization algorithms are insufficient in large scale combinatorial problems and in nonlinear problems. Hence, metaheuristic optimization algorithms have been proposed. General purpose metaheuristic methods are evaluated in nine different groups: biology-based, physics-based, social-based, music-based, chemical-based, sport-based, mathematics-based, swarm-based, and hybrid methods which are combinations of these. Studies on plants in recent years have showed that plants exhibit intelligent behaviors. Accordingly, it is thought that plants have nervous system. In this work, all of the algorithms and applications about plant intelligence have been firstly collected and searched. Information is given about plant intelligence algorithms such as Flower Pollination Algorithm, Invasive Weed Optimization, Paddy Field Algorithm, Root Mass Optimization Algorithm, Artificial Plant Optimization Algorithm, Sapling Growing up Algorithm, Photosynthetic Algorithm, Plant Growth Optimization, Root Growth Algorithm, Strawberry Algorithm as Plant Propagation Algorithm, Runner Root Algorithm, Path Planning Algorithm, and Rooted Tree Optimization.

- MakaleYalnız künye2017Scopus SJRQ2Marine Fungi Against Aquaculture Pathogens and Induction of the Activity via Co-Culture
Özkaya, Ferhat Can; Peker, Zerife; Camas, Mustafa; Camas, Anil Sazak; Altunok, Muhammet
Ethyl acetate extracts from 70 strains of marine-derived fungi, isolated from sponges, were screened against four fish pathogenic bacteria. Sixteen of the fungal isolates exhibited antibacterial activity against at least one pathogen. All the strains showed antibacterial activity against Vagococcus salmoninarum. Three isolates showed strong inhibition against all test pathogens and they may therefore be remarkable as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial. Nine isolates showed antibacterial activity against Lactococcus garvieae, six were against Vibrio anguillarum, and four isolates inhibited the growth of Yersinia ruckeri. Co-culture of the fungus with the mix of the pathogen bacteria led to the induction of bioactivity in two isolates. Aspergillus iizukae produced strong and broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against pathogens with minimum inhibitory concentrations of 0.8-406 mu gmL(-1). The screening results confirmed the sponge associated fungi as a source of environmentally friendly antimicrobials that may contribute the sustainable development of aquaculture. In addition, co-culture technique is a promising strategy to increase antimicrobial activity that can stimulate the production of novel compounds, and increases the antimicrobial activities of marine derived fungi.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2017Pleistocene Glaciations in Karadag, Western Taurus Mountains, Turkey
Bayrakdar, Cihan; Çilgin, Zeynel; Saris, Faize
Karadag is one of the mountains subjected to the Pleistocene glaciations in the Teke Peninsula (Western Taurus) along with Beydaglari, Akdag, and Sandiras Mountains. Karadag, which reaches 2418 m summit at a 30 km straight distance from the northeast of Fethiye Bay, has many peaks over 2300 m. There are plenty of glacial researches and dating studies aim to reveal Pleistocene glaciation chronology of the mountains such as Sandiras and Akdag in the Teke Peninsula. On the other hand, glaciations in Beydaglari were mentioned superficially and in general terms. Lastly, there has not been known any glaciation phenomenon in Karadag, in other words there are not any studies concerning the glaciation on the mountain. However, Karadag has distinctive cirques and moraines on the slopes of high elevations near the peak. In this study, we identified glacial valleys, cirques developed in different sizes and aspects and lastly frontal and hummocky moraines in front of these cirques. They are descending to the elevation of 1800 m. With this study, a new glacial area was identified in Turkey and made a contribution to the glaciation inventory of Turkey. This study aims to reveal the geomorphological and climatological characteristics of this area with regard to tectonic, climatic and karstic characteristics during Pleistocene. Maps and relevant outputs were created and analyzed by geographic information systems using the spatial data obtained from the field studies, unmanned aerial vehicles and meteorological stations.

Aydin, Ali; Korkmaz, Sengul Aslan; Demir, Veysel; Tekin, Saban
Background: In cancer, apoptosis relevant proteins-such as CaM kinase, Bcl-2 or P53, topoisomerase I, cell migration feature and DNA/BSA-macromolecules represent significant targets for current chemotherapeutics. Objective: We recently reported two coordination compounds-[Cu(C6H16N2O2)(2)][Ni(CN)(4)] (1) and [Cu(C6H16 N2O2) Pd(CN)(4)] (2)-together with their IR spectra, magnetic properties, thermal analyses and crystal structures. Herein, we describe the ability of these complexes to induce apoptosis in relevant proteins and stimulate topoisomerase I activity, cell migration velocity and DNA/BSA binding properties. Method: The in vitro antiproliferative effects and cell toxicity of both compounds were investigated through pharmacological measurement techniques, and interactions between both compounds and CT-DNA/BSA were studied with UV-Vis spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. Results & Conclusion: Studies on cells revealed that 2 (i) demonstrated a high antiproliferative effect, which was higher toward HeLa and C6 cancer cells than toward healthy Vero cells; (ii) impaired the migration of HeLa cells; (iii) altered the P53-Bcl-2 ratio in favor of apoptosis; (iv) strongly bound to DNA/BSA macromolecules; and (v) inhibited human topoisomerase I and KpnI or BamHI restriction endonucleases. In conclusion, this preliminary information demonstrates that 2 may represent a promising antiproliferative agent and a potential candidate for a therapeutic approach against HeLa.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2017Scopus SJRQ1Evaluation of physical and mechanical characteristics of siderite concrete to be used as heavy-weight concrete
Esen, Yuksel; Dogan, Zulfu Murat
The objective of this study is to investigate the usability of siderite aggregates mentioned above as a heavy-weight aggregate in the heavy-weight concrete production and their effects on physical properties of the heavy-weight concrete mixture. For this purpose, normal-weight aggregate content was decreased at the rate of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% by volume of the concrete mixture prepared and mixtures were prepared by its substitution with siderite aggregate at the same rates. Based on the increase in siderite aggregate in the concrete mixture, a considerable increase in unit weight, compressive strength and tensile strength of concrete was obtained. Plate-shaped concrete specimens obtained from combined normal-weight and heavy-weight aggregates were exposed to radiation with different X-ray source (118 keV, 164 keV) and Co-60 (1250 keV) beam source at cekmece Nuclear Facility. It is clearly seen that the concrete mixture containing siderite aggregate improved 70% radiation absorption characteristics compared to that of the concrete mixture without siderite aggregate. Sonmez, Feray; Kutlu, Banu; Sesli, Ahmet
The environmental factors that affect the seasonal change of the phytoplankton community and composition in Karkamis Dam Lake were investigated on samples taken from five stations between January 2015 and December 2015. It was found that the phytoplankton of Karkamis Dam Lake consisted of 85 taxa belonging to Bacillariophyta (56 taxa), Chlorophyta (15 taxa), Chrysophyta (1 taxon), Cyanophyta (10 taxa), Dinophyta (2 taxa) and Euglenophyta (1 taxon). Members of Bacillariophyta and Chrysophyta increased well during spring, summer and also at the end of fall whilst Chlorophyta grew well only in summer and fall. Cyanophyta became dominant at the end of spring and in summer. However Dinophyta was remarkably conspicuous in winter as well as in spring and fall in terms of prevalence. Excessive reproduction of Cyanobacteria, which is a characteristic aspect of mesotrophic lakes, was observed in Karkamis Dam Lake in both May and July. Results of physical and chemical measurements and analysis indicated that the lake was mesotrophic based on PCA and Carlson trophic state index. Phytoplankton composition was found to be affected by environmental factors such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, phosphate and nitrate through the year. Using these data, a strong model was developed for sustainable management in Karkamis Dam Lake.
