- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ3Experimental and Theoretical Study on the Freshwater Productivity of a Single-Slope Solar Still
Tuğan, Volkan; Işık, Erdem; İnallı, Mustafa
Converting saline water into freshwater using renewable energy resources is crucial to address global shortages of freshwater. This study aims to investigate the freshwater productivity of a single-slope solar still (SSS) operating with solar energy, one of the renewable energy sources. The main motivation of this study is to evaluate the experimental, theoretical, and economic performance of the solar still under climate conditions that have not been sufficiently studied before. Experimental analyses were conducted under the climatic conditions of Tunceli, a city located in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Türkiye. In addition, a comprehensive theoretical analysis was carried out using energy equations, and the experimental and theoretical results were compared with each other. Finally, the economic feasibility of the system was evaluated through a cost analysis. The SSS's experimental and theoretical productivity were found to be 1883.9 and 2458.7 g/m2/day, respectively. The experimental thermal efficiency for this still was 15.1%, whereas the theoretical thermal efficiency was 19.7%. It was concluded that the theoretical productivity and efficiency values were close to the experimental values and the difference between them originated from the assumptions of theoretical calculations. The cost of water distilled by the single-slope solar distillation unit was found to be $0.077/kg, and the payback period was found to be 9 months.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1A new lightweight convolutional neural network model for detecting drivable road regions
Doğan, Gürkan; Uyanık, Hakan; Ergen, Burhan
Nowadays, due to the rapid increase in the number of autonomous vehicles on the market, the safe navigation of these vehicles in drivable road areas has become extremely important. One of the most crucial factors in ensuring safe navigation is addressing the detection of drivable road areas as a task of semantic segmentation. Considering that autonomous vehicles are modular, the algorithm to perform this task must have the optimum trade-off in terms of lightweight, computational complexity, and segmentation accuracy. In this study, RoNet, a new model based on convolutional neural networks that provides an optimum trade-off for the detection of drivable road regions, was designed and proposed. The standard convolution types for the encoder and decoder bottleneck module of the RoNet model, as well as the spatial edge attention mechanism, have been optimized by developing asymmetric convolution types using asymmetric atrous convolution, asymmetric convolution types using Prewitt and Sobel kernels. Spatial edge attention mechanism is designed to reduce the loss of detailed information in small-resolution feature maps. In experimental tests performed with CamVid and FUVid datasets, RoNet achieved a better trade-off in terms of segmentation accuracy, number of parameters, and computational complexity compared to other state-of-the-art methods.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Improvement of mechanical, dynamic mechanical, and thermal properties of almond shell powder reinforced acrylonitrile butadiene styrene composites by addition of cerium oxide
Doğan, Akar; Güneş, Çağdaş
Currently, natural materials are gradually replacing synthetic materials in polymer composites due to factors including cost-effectiveness, sustainability, and the availability of raw materials. This study examined the variations in thermal, mechanical, and dynamic mechanical properties of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) thermoplastic composite materials incorporating varying ratios of almond shell powder (ASP) and Cerium Oxide (CeO2). Tensile tests, three-point bending tests, dynamic mechanical analyses, and thermogravimetric analyses were conducted. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analyses were employed to assess pure ABS and nine distinct composite materials. The tensile strength, elastic modulus, and three-point bending strength of the composite material exhibited increases of 6%, 7%, and 7.5%, respectively, compared to pure ABS, with various ratios of almond shell powder and CeO2 reinforcement. Moreover, composite materials exhibit elevated glass-transition temperatures and storage moduli compared to pure ABS. Microstructure images obtained through SEM and EDS element mapping illustrate the distribution of ASP and CeO2 in ABS, influencing its mechanical and thermal properties. Highlights: Almond shell powder and cerium oxide were used as filler materials in ABS. Mechanical, morphological, and dynamic mechanical properties were investigated. Almond shell powder enhanced the mechanical properties of the ABS composite. Low cerium oxide supplementation improved the mechanical properties.

The primary objective of this study was to examine the effect of Momordica charantia L. extract (MCE) on the generation of heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) in meatball samples. Meatballs were prepared with varying usage rates of MCE (0%, 0.5%, and 1%) and pan-fried at 150 °C, 200 °C, and 250 °C for a total cooking duration of 10 min. The samples were analyzed for proximate composition, pH, cooking loss, and HAA levels. Results indicated that increased cooking temperatures led to higher total HAAs, with specific types and quantities of HAAs varying according to both cooking temperature and MCE concentration. The total HAA content in the meatball samples ranged from 0.81 ng/g and 10.75 ng/g. Specifically, the total HAAs were 1.29 ± 0.38 ng/g, 3.40 ± 1.52 ng/g, and 7.60 ± 2.48 ng/g in meatballs cooked at 150 °C, 200 °C, and 250 °C, respectively (p < 0.05). The addition of MCE at different concentrations reduced the generation of total HAAs, with 0.5% MCE showing the highest inhibitory effect, reducing total HAAs by 30.8%. These findings underscore the significance of considering cooking conditions, including temperature and usage rate, when incorporating antioxidant compounds into meat products.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Investigating forest fire causes through an integrated Bayesian network and geographic information system approach
Konurhan, Zekeriya; Yucesan, Melih; Gul, Muhammet
Forests are among the most critical natural resources worldwide and are essential for a sustainable ecosystem. In recent years, climate change and human activities have increased their impact on forests, and forest fires-especially in summer- have caused significant forest losses globally. This paper integrates Bayesian Network (BN) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to pinpoint the possible causes of forest fires and analyze their complex interactions. The study used data from 1465 fires between 2017 and 2022 in Muğla province in southwestern Türkiye. Within the scope of the study, 11 variables were chosen, such as elevation, slope, aspect, wind speed, population density, and road network, to build a BN model that combines physical and human geographical features. These variables overlapped using the pairwise intersect tool from ArcGIS Pro during the BN model setup, and probability values were calculated. The overall probability of fire in the BN model was determined to be 0.81, with probabilities ranging from 0.81 to 0.56 in low-altitude, moderately sloped, and south-facing areas. Scenario analyses examined fire risk under different conditions, highlighting the most influential variables for fire prevention efforts. The study identified fire-prone areas as spatial data, revealing that densely forested coastal and certain inland regions are at higher risk, whereas bare high-altitude areas with steep slopes pose lower risk. The BN model can be further enhanced by incorporating additional variables, making it a valuable tool for future fire risk assessment and mitigation strategies research.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ1Aerodynamic characteristics of a symmetrical airfoil in the presence of segmentally distributed leading-edge tubercles
Seyhan, Mehmet; Demirci, Veysel; Çolak, Aleyna; Kan, Furkan Erman; Firat, Erhan; Sarioglu, Mustafa
In recent decades, experimental and numerical studies have demonstrated that wings with leading-edge (LE) tubercles exhibit advantageous aerodynamic performance at high attack angles compared to their unmodified counterparts. A substantial portion of these studies employed a single sinusoidal function to design the tubercles applied along the entire span. In this study, two functions were utilized to design tubercles. This experimental study was conducted to evaluate the effects of segmentally distributed (i.e., equally spaced) LE tubercles on the aerodynamic characteristics (ACs) of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) 0018 airfoils and to associate them with the flow patterns observed on the suction surface. To this end, five different airfoil models have been produced and tested. The models consist of one plain airfoil, one fully tubercled airfoil, and three segmentally tubercled airfoils. The test results were obtained at Reynolds numbers (Re) of 0.6 × 10 5 to 1.2 × 10 5 . It has been determined that the distance between neighboring tubercled segments possesses a critical value with regard to performance enhancements in the post-stall regime. In the range below this critical distance, the tubercled segments lack the capacity to reattach the separated flow from the plain segments of the airfoil. Furthermore, the presence of a novel vortical structure (i.e., single rotating vortex cell, SRVC) under certain conditions was demonstrated qualitatively.

Luciobarbus esocinus (mangar), a critically endangered mega-fish species (≤ 140 kg) endemic to the Euphrates and Tigris river systems, faces severe threats due to habitat fragmentation. To assess its spatial ecology in the Keban Reservoir, 30 individuals were acoustically tagged and monitored for 218–437 days using 18 receivers deployed in the reservoir. The tagged fish exhibited low site fidelity, with station residency indices (RI) ranging from 0.00 to 0.46 and detection periods lasting 59–153 days. Depth and temperature data (115,318 and 112,789 records, respectively) revealed seasonal habitat shifts: individuals occupied deeper waters in winter (mean 10.1 m), shallower depths in spring (4.4 m) and summer (3.8 m), and tolerated temperatures of 7.4°C–28.4°C. Although depth use was weakly correlated with temperature, trends indicated shallower occupancy during warmer periods. Home range analyses showed a maximum linear home range (LHR) of 36.5 km and the areal home range estimated via minimum convex polygon (MCP) was 6422.8 ha. In addition, kernel density (KD) analysis revealed the 95% KD area was 2877.0 ha, the 75% KD area was 67.7 ha and the 50% KD area was 33.8 ha. Seasonal migrations spanned 25–30 km upstream/downstream from release sites, particularly toward tributaries in spring. Around the Keban Reservoir, 14 hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) present and most of these HPP are not designed suitable fish passages. Urgent conservation measures are needed, including Fish Conservation Zones in critical habitats and connectivity restoration via functional fishways, to safeguard this imperilled species in fragmented river-reservoir ecosystems.
- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ2Removal of Impurities from Sepiolite by Gravity/Sizing Methods for Better Viscosity Development
Angur, G. Ersever; Çınar, M.; Çelik, M.S.
Sepiolite, a natural strategic clay mineral within the phyllosilicate group, is utilized in numerous applications because of its physical, and rheological properties. In particular, outstanding rheological properties are utilized in areas including drilling mud, paint, cosmetics, adhesives, etc. Several studies have been performed for the purification of clays, such as air classification, calcination, hydrocyclone, and flotation, for different purposes. In this study, relatively easy physical upgrading methods involving hydroxyclone, Falcon, and shaking table have been tested with the aim of obtaining a high-viscosity sepiolite product for rheological applications. It is shown that dispersion time, particle size, and pH are the most critical parameters in the viscosity development of sepiolite. The results indicate that, depending on the dispersion time of the raw HS1 sepiolite sample used in this study, the highest quality rheological material remains in the size range of – 2 mm to + 1 mm. Below – 0.1 mm, the viscosity value of the sepiolite sample decreased to its lowest value of 6000 cP. The pH-dependent viscosity measurements of a raw HS1 sepiolite sample exhibited the highest viscosity value of 13,000 cP at its natural pH of 8.5. Polyacrylic acid sodium salt (PAA) is the most effective dispersing agent in the decantation process for the enrichment of HS1 sepiolite samples. Among the three gravity/sizing beneficiation techniques tested, the middlings product of the shaking table achieved the highest quality sepiolite product of 17,000 cP with 49.2 wt.% using the size range of – 2.83 mm to + 1 mm; this material is suitable for high-grade rheological applications.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ3The effect of addition of powder jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) fruit at different rates into mixed diets on antioxidant and some blood parameters of broiler chickens*
Arslan, S.; Parlak Ak, T.; Guler Ekmen, E.; Karakoc, Ş.; Ciftci, M.
This study was conducted to determine the effects of addition of jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) fruit at different rates into the mixed feed on intestinal morphology, antioxidant and some blood parameters of broiler chickens. A total of 160 male broiler (initial body weights were determined as 209.25±2.17, 209.18±2.13, 209.18±1.74 and 209.20±2.58, respectively) chickens (Ross-308), including 40 in each group, were used in the study. The groups were divided into 4 sub-groups, each of which include 10 broiler chickens. The study groups were the control group (the group without jujube fruit), the H-0.5% group (the group with 0.5% jujube fruit), the H-1 group (the group with 1% jujube fruit), and the H-2 group (the group with 2% jujube fruit). At the end of the experiment (42nd day), the control group had the highest levels of blood glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, very low density lipoprotein cholesterol, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and uric acid, and the lowest level of creatine (P<0.05). While the lowest malondialdehyde level was detected in the H-2 group (P<0.001), the highest glutathione peroxidase (P<0.01) and catalase (P<0.05) levels were observed in the H-1 and H-2 groups. The control group also had the lowest values for villus height and crypt depth and the highest values for villus height/crypt depth (P<0.001). As a result, it was concluded that jujube fruit, which is mainly used for its antioxidant properties, can be used in poultry compound feeds especially at the level of 1% due to its positive effects on antioxidant and blood parameters and intestinal morphology.

Özçiçek, Esin; Kocabaş, Filiz Kutluyer; Kocabaş, Mehmet; Yilmaz, Ökkeş
Abstract: As an important challenge restricting hatchery production, gamete quality and subsequent larvae and juvenile are influenced by broodstock nutritional status (i.e., protein, essential amino acids, fatty acid profile and minerals). Hence, the fatty acid (FA) profiles of muscle and gametes in threatened Abant trout (Salmo abanticus) from wild was elucidated and quantitated using the gas chromatography. Our results indicated that the saturated fatty acids (SFAs) in muscle and sperm (38.00 and 60.98%) of S. abanticus occurred in higher quantities than unsaturated fatty acids. The egg of S. abanticus in the wild is characterized by high (mostly n-6 HUFA, 33.59%). Tricosanoic acid (C23:0) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6 n-3) were not determined in sperm of S. abanticus. Overall, the current study provides FA composition in the reproduction cells and muscle of mature S. abanticus and the gametes and muscle had similar general FA profiles with the dominance of C18:1 n-9 (Oleic acid), C16:0 (Palmitic acid), C4:0 (Butyric acid), C18:2 n-6 (Linoleic acid, LA) and C20:5 n-3 (Eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA).

Altı, Aziz
Elephants have always been a focus of attention for humanity, thanks to both their physical structure and their potential strength. This attractive effect of elephants also made itself felt in the Ottoman Empire, and elephants took their place in Ottoman property from the early periods of the state. The elephants sent from the “Eastern” world to the Ottoman sultans within the scope of diplomatic relations now became permanent residents of the state. In fact, within the Ottoman Empire, positions such as chief elephant keeper and filbân (elephant caretaker) were created to care for and train elephants. The filbâns, whose numbers changed from time to time, worked under Mîrâhûr in the Ottoman state organization. The filbâns, who were paid salaries as ulufe, also routinely received allowances for the needs of the elephants. Shelters were provided for elephants in suitable areas in Istanbul. Elephants were not only found in Istanbul, but also in provincial cities, especially in Edirne. Elephants, who contributed to the authority and charismatic personality of the Sultan, were kept in the Ottoman Empire to serve different purposes. As a matter of fact, elephants appeared as important figures in the reception of ambassadors, festivals, wars and diplomatic relations between states. In this context, the subjects of this study were the actions that took place in the social, military and political life of the Ottoman Empire.

Dietarian identity reflects an individual’s cognitive, emotional, and behavioral orientation toward the consumption or avoidance of animal-based foods, including red meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy. This study aimed to adapt and validate the Dietarian Identity Questionnaire (DIQ) for Turkish-speaking populations by establishing its cultural and linguistic suitability and examining dietarian identity profiles among different dietary patterns. The DIQ was adapted into Turkish and administered via a webbased survey to 487 Turkish-speaking adults (Mean age=28.9±10.7 years; 34.7% male, 64.1% female, and 1.2% non-binary). Participants were categorized as omnivores, vegetarians, or vegans based on self-reported dietary exclusions. Structural validity was assessed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis, while internal consistency, composite reliability, and convergent and discriminant validity were evaluated through Cronbach’s alpha and average variance extracted. Group differences across dietary identity profiles were examined using ANOVA, and interrelationships among the DIQ-Turkish (DIQ-T) subscales were explored through Pearson correlation analysis. The results indicated that the eight-factor DIQ-T demonstrated a strong model fit (χ2 (465) =1841.45, p<0.001, CFI=0.924, TLI=0.914, RMSEA=0.078, SRMR=0.050), confirming its structural validity. Reliability analysis indicated high internal consistency across all subscales, and significant differences were observed between omnivores and vegan/vegetarian groups across multiple dimensions (p<0.001), highlighting distinct psychological and motivational patterns associated with dietarian identity. These findings support DIQ-T as a valid and reliable instrument for assessing dietarian identity, providing a valuable tool for researchers and health professionals investigating dietary behaviors and their potential implications for public health and nutrition interventions.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Evaluation of aerobic and anaerobic capacity in pubertal karate athletes: performance analysis and development strategies
Korkmaz, Kübranur; Aygören, Caner; Düzova, Halil
Background: This study investigated the effects of gender’s foot arch structure (normal arch vs. pes planus) on aerobic and anaerobic performance in pubertal karate athletes. Method: Children with chronic cardiovascular and musculoskeletal diseases were excluded from the study. Participants included boys with normal foot arches (B-nfa, n = 7), boys with pes planus (B-pp, n = 11), girls with normal foot arches (G-nfa, n = 16), and girls with pes planus (G-pp, n = 11). Aerobic capacity was evaluated using the 6-Minute Walk Test, while anaerobic performance was assessed through the Vertical Jump Test and sprint tests (10 m and 30 m). The height of the foot arch was measured using the Navicular Drop test. Nonparametric data were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis test and Dunn's post-hoc test to identify significant differences. Parametric data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test. Pearson's test was used for parametric correlation, while Spearman's test was used for nonparametric correlation. The significance threshold was set at p < 0.05. Results: Individuals in the G-nfa group exhibited higher anaerobic power than those in the G-pp group (p = 0.0452). There was a strong negative correlation between arch pes planus and Spear equations (r = 0.63, p = 0.0004). B-nfa participants performed faster than both B-pp (p = 0.0015) and G-pp (p = 0.0015). The G-nfa completed the 10 m sprint test faster than both B-pp and G-pp (p = 0.0052). B-nfa outperformed G-pp in the 30 m sprint (p = 0.036) and covered greater distances in the six-minute walk test compared to B-pp (p = 0.034) and G-pp (p = 0.002). Conclusion: In this study, we concluded that flat feet do not negatively affect the development of aerobic capacity in prepubertal children undergoing professional karate training. Still, they may significantly impact the growth of anaerobic power.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ3Negative Outcome Expectation as a Barrier for Knowledge Sharing: Conceptualisation and Measurement Development
Uyan, Umut
Knowledge sharing has become the critical success factor for effective knowledge management since it bridges the gap between knowledge creation and utilisation. So far, socio-psychological factors have yet to attract the attention of scholars despite numerous barriers impeding the flow of knowledge. The current study is, therefore, designed to develop a self-reporting measurement instrument that uncovers hidden sharing barriers triggered by negative outcome expectations. To test the psychometric properties of the newly designed instrument, a stepwise procedure was applied. The findings indicate that the instrument aimed at developing is a multidimensional construct consisting of 13 items and four dimensions (assumption of being ignored, assumption of not meeting expectations, assumption of being non-sense and assumption of conflict avoidance). The results of this study provide preliminary evidence for the reliability and validity of the 13-item negative outcome expectation scales as a measure of hidden assumptions towards knowledge sharing.

This study investigates the impact of the Flipped Classroom Model (FCM) on university students’ learning achievement, self-directed learning skills (SLS), and course interaction within the context of live online classes (LOC). Employing a 14-week quasi-experimental design, the research involved an experimental group (n = 34) exposed to the FCM and a control group (n = 25) taught through traditional methods. Pre-tests indicated that the groups were not statistically different at baseline. Post-intervention analyses revealed no statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of immediate learning achievement or course interaction. However, results from a delayed post-test indicated that students in the experimental group demonstrated significantly higher retention of learning content compared to their counterparts. No significant improvements were observed in self-directed learning skills, suggesting that the FCM, as implemented, may not effectively foster such competencies across all learners. Furthermore, the model did not significantly enhance student interaction in the online classroom environment. These findings suggest that while the FCM may support long-term retention, its overall impact on achievement, interaction, and the development of SLS in LOC settings is limited and may be moderated by students’ existing self-regulatory capacities.

The moisture, protein, ash, fat, and carbohydrate content of the CM was 6.46% ± 0.35%, 17.44% ± 0.62%, 11.49% ± 0.39%, 1.27% ± 0.10%, and 63.16% ± 0.58%, respectively. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy identified acidic (–COOH) functional groups in the CM. Four distinct cookie samples were examined: The control-cookie, 20% CM-cookie, 40% CM-cookie, and 60% CM-cookie were prepared by replacing shortening with CM at 0%, 20%, 40%, and 60% levels, respectively. The mucilage-incorporated doughs were softer, springy, cohesive, and resilient compared to the control dough (p < 0.05). As for the cookies, the fat content of the 20% CM-cookie, 40% CM-cookie, and 60% CM-cookie samples decreased by 12.52%, 31.49%, and 50.12%, respectively, compared to the control-cookie. The control-cookie had the lowest baking loss (p < 0.05), and the baking loss values of the mucilage-incorporated cookies increased with increasing fat replacement level. The highest spread ratio was recorded in the 20% CM-cookie, followed by the control-cookie (p < 0.05). The highest hardness and brittleness values (70.68 ± 3.37 N and 11.52 ± 0.34 mm) belonged to the 60% CM-cookie, whereas the lowest (19.42 ± 1.42 N and 8.80 ± 0.26 mm) belonged to the control-cookie (p < 0.05). Incorporating mucilage into the cookie formula increased the total phenolic compound content but decreased the antioxidant activity. These results show that CM has potential utility as a fat substitute in cookie production without significant quality loss.
