Lead (Pb) is a widespread environmental pollutant that induces systemic toxicity in aquatic organisms primarily through oxidative stress, hematological disruption, and immune dysfunction. This study investigated the protective effects of ellagic acid (EA) against Pb-induced toxicity in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) using a multi-biomarker approach and molecular docking. Fish were assigned to six experimental groups: control, EA-treated, Pb-I, Pb-I + EA, Pb-II, and Pb-II + EA. Fish in the Pb-I and Pb-II groups were exposed to 2.5 and 5 mg/L Pb, respectively, while EA was administered via diet at 100 mg/kg for 14 days. At the end of the exposure period, hematological indices, innate immune parameters, and oxidative stress biomarkers were assessed in blood, liver, kidney, and gill tissues. Pb exposure caused marked hematological impairment, suppressed immune responses, increased malondialdehyde levels, and disrupted antioxidant defense by reducing SOD, CAT, GSH-Px, and GSH levels while increasing GST activity. In contrast, dietary EA supplementation significantly mitigated Pb-induced alterations, improved hematological and immunological responses, reduced lipid peroxidation, restored antioxidant capacity, and normalized GST activity to control levels. Molecular docking analyses further showed that EA interacts with hemoglobin and immunoglobulin M, supporting its potential role in preserving oxygen transport and immune functions under Pb-induced stress. Overall, the findings demonstrate that Pb-induced toxicity involves coordinated disruption of redox homeostasis and immune function, whereas EA exerts a multi-target protective effect through biochemical and molecular mechanisms. This study provides mechanistic insight into chemical-biological interactions and supports the potential application of natural bioactive compounds in mitigating heavy metal-induced toxicity.

Anti-oxidants are vital for protecting sperm and can mitigate the negative effects associated with cryopreservation. This study was conducted to evaluate the protective effects of adding anti-oxidants (vitamins and amino acids) to extender in sex-reversed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) sperm. The collected sperm was diluted at the ratio of 1: 5 by the extenders supplemented with different anti-oxidants including 1.00 mM of ascorbic acid and L-tryptophan, 2.00 mM of cysteine and α-tocopherol, and their combination. After dilution, the semen was aspirated into 0.50 mL straws, and the straws were placed on the tray, frozen for 10 min, and plunged into liquid nitrogen. Straws were thawed in a 30.00 ˚C water bath for 15 sec. The Sperm Class Analyzer System was used to evaluate sperm kinematics. The activity of anti-oxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation were determined as oxidative stress indices. Our data indicated that the incorporation of anti-oxidants and amino acids increased sperm motility duration. The elevated activity of glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase in post-thaw samples indicates that the anti-oxidant system in sex-reversed rainbow trout sperm likely plays a crucial role in protecting membrane compounds from oxidation. In conclusion, the combination of 1.00 mM L-tryptophan and ascorbic acid to the extender media caused a prolonging effect in sperm motility after thawing and they have the potential to serve as effective agents for improving sperm cryosurvival.

Freshwater snails are a nutritious food source, providing vital amino acids, minerals, and protein with low lipid levels. Hence, the adaptation ability, growth rate, fatty acid (FA) profile, and shell content of Viviparus contectus were determined. Biometric measurements were recorded for 6 months. Over the 6-month cultivation period, specific growth rates were recorded as 0.32% · day-1 for shell length and 0.92% · day-1 for body weight. The FA profile of the freshwater snail included a total of 32 compounds with saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated FAs represented by 13, 10, and 9 types, respectively. Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) exhibited the highest concentration, followed by saturated fatty acids (SFAs) s at 35.14% and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) at 14.57%. Stearic acid (C18:0), erucic acid (C22:1 n-9), and arachidonic acid (C20:4 n-6) were determined as the most abundant FAs within the saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated FAs classes, respectively. The energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy spectra analysis revealed that the shell powder composition consisted of the elements, such as carbon, oxygen, calcium, iron, manganese, and silicium. Overall, V. contectus showed a clear increase in growth over the cultivation period, and future studies are needed to obtain the best culture conditions and intensive production of the species.

Gün, Abdulselam; Kızak, Volkan; Gündüz, Fatih
In this research, larval growth features by applying different diets and growth characteristics of fry at different stocking densities were studied under controlled conditions for the Tigris scraper (Capoeta umbla). In the first experiment, the growth and survival rates of Tigris scraper postlarvae were evaluated under three different diet regimes over 21 days. The highest mean total length was 24.04±0.27 mm in the group L1 fed solely Artemia nauplii, and the lowest mean total length was 17.89±0.16 mm in the group L2 fed only dry feed. The highest mean specific growth rate was in the L1, and the lowest mean specific growth rate was in the L2. In the second experiment in which the growth characteristics of fry were investigated at different stocking densities for 98 days, the highest mean live weight was found in S1 with 2.819±0.157 g and the lowest mean live weight was determined as 0.859±0.073 g in S5. The highest mean specific growth rate was in S1, while the lowest rate was in S5. High stocking densities were found to be disadvantageous for growth of C. umbla fry. The findings suggest that successful rearing of Tigris scraper postlarvae and fry is feasible under controlled conditions.

This study examined the adverse effects of sublethal concentrations of cadmium (Cd) and the potential of curcumin (CUR) to mitigate Cd-induced toxicity. We administered 1.5 and 3 mg/L of Cd and 100 mg/kg of CUR to fish (Cyprinus carpio) separately and in combination over 14 days. At the end of the experiments, various haematological and immunological parameters, oxidative stress levels and antioxidant parameters of fish were measured, and the differences between the groups were evaluated. Simultaneous CUR treatment with Cd reversed the changes in haematological parameters in fish, increased immune responses, reduced oxidative stress and normalized the impaired antioxidant enzyme activities. In summary, our study showed that dietary supplementation with CUR may be an effective strategy to reduce the toxic effects of Cd in carp.

Can, Erkan; Özçiçek, Esin; Erol, Nida Demirtaş; Austin, Brian
There has been much discussion about which is better, farmed (= aquaculture) or wild-caught fish (= capture-fisheries), with supporters and opponents of both approaches. On balance, aquaculture should be the better option because of the ability to control all aspects of production. The result is that farmed products are often cheaper than wild-caught equivalents. However, there are negative aspects to aquaculture, including habitat destruction, for example the removal of mangroves for the construction of shrimp farms, the effect of escapees on native fish populations, and the possible negative impact of pollution from organic material, pathogens and antimicrobial compounds. The use of wild-caught “trash” fish as a source of protein and oil for the diets of carnivorous fish species in aquaculture is unsustainable. In contrast with wild-caught fish, there is greater variability in supply because of overfishing, quotas imposed by governments, and the effects of adverse weather. Moreover, fishing in distant waters is expensive and hazardous. Certainly, the quality of the product is more difficult to control because the history of the catch is largely unknown. However, there are concerns about illegal fishing activities, and the capture of undersized specimens which impacts negatively on future stocking levels. For the forseeable future, there will be roles for both aquaculture and capture-fisheries to meet the increasing global demand for aquatic food.

The depletion of unique genetic resources and increased risk of extinction may result from hybridization between native and introduced species. In the present study, morphological and molecular analysis were performed on two putative natural interspecific hybrids of the genus Salmo and their parent species, Salmo labrax and Salmo munzuricus, collected from Uzunçayır Dam Lake, which is fed by Munzur and Pülümür streams. Molecular analyses revealed the presence of S. labrax in Uzunçayır Dam Lake for the first time. Phylogenetic analysis using the cytochrome b (Cytb) gene of mitochondrial DNA to determine the maternal origin revealed that hybrid individuals belonged to the same clades as S. labrax or S. munzuricus. Recombination activating gene 1 (Rag1) sequence of nuclear DNA was analyzed for paternal analysis and it was determined that hybrid individuals carried similar single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to S. labrax or S. munzuricus. These findings support that individuals derive from different parental species. Therefore, evidence from trout samples assumed to be natural hybrids in this study suggests interspecific hybridization between S. labrax and S. munzuricus, but further studies are required. Zinc (Zn) is an essential micro mineral needed for the proper growth and immune function of fish. This investigation was designed to examine the antioxidant role of a fortified diet with different Zn levels in the muscle and liver tissues of carp fry. A four-iso-nitrogen (35% crude protein) practical diet was produced that included graded levels of dietary zinc sulphate as a nutritional zinc resource in the fundamental diet supplemented with increased zinc levels (T1, control, 85 mg Zn kg-1, T2 105 mg Zn kg-1, T3, 125 mg Zn kg-1 and T4, 145 mg Zn kg-1). Even though the SOD and CAT analysis results did not show a linear increase in the increasing Zn ratio in the diets, higher values were obtained compared to the control groups. SOD highest values in T3 for the liver (0.713 ± 0.220 U/ml) and T1 for muscle (0.751 ± 0.144 U/ml), CAT values were highest in T2 for the liver (0.849 ± 0.115 nmol/dk/m) and T2 for muscle (1.059 ± 0.148 nmol/dk/m) was obtained. MDA values were completely higher for the muscle than for the control group, and for the liver, a lower value was obtained in the T2 trial group than in the control group (1.671 ± 0.230 µM). The results of the study showed that Zn contributed significantly to the nutrition of carp fish. It can be concluded that the findings of SOD and CAT analysis endorse the positive contributions of using 105 mg Zn in the diets to promote the antioxidant defense of juvenile carp fish.

This study examined the occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of 384 fishes classified into four species from 11 sites in 2022 from the southern part of the Caspian Sea. GITs of fishes were collected and digested in H2O2 and KOH at 45 °C for 72 h. After filtration, extracted MPs were observed under a stereomicroscope, and selected MP particles were identified using FTIR. Presence of MPs was 68.98% in the GIT of the investigated fish. The mean abundance of MPs was 5.9 ± 0.9 MPs/GIT in Rutilus kutum, 9.2 ± 1.2 MPs/GIT in Chelon auratus, 3.6 ± 0.7 MPs/GIT in Alosa braschnikowi, and 2.7 ± 0.5 MPs/GIT in Vimba vimba. The predominant form of MPs was fiber (58.21%), followed by fragment (34.77%). Black (34.4%), white (19.07%), and blue (14.58%) were the most frequently detected colors of MPs. Overall, 6 MP polymers were identified, dominantly polypropylene (42.86%), polystyrene (17.86%), and cellophane (14.28%). The western part of the Caspian Sea (mostly tourist spots and urban areas) showed more MP pollution in fish compared to the eastern part. Polymer hazard index (PHI) revealed alarming microplastic contamination in the southern Caspian Sea. The PHI value of the present study showed that PES (PHI = 8403.78) and PS (PHI = 535.80) were “Extreme danger” and “Danger” risk categories, respectively.
