- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ2Phase Stability, Structural Properties, Electronegativity, Mechanical Properties, and Neutron and Gamma-Ray Attenuation Properties of Cantor High Entropy Alloys for Advanced Nuclear Applications
Tekin, H.O.; Güler, Ömer; Özkul, İskender; AlMisned, Ghada; Baykal, Duygu Sen; Alkarrani, Hessa; Kilic, G.; Mesbahi, A.
High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) hold considerable potential for sophisticated nuclear applications, offering a vast spectrum of compositional tuning to enhance mechanical properties at high temperatures, as well as to increase resistance to radiation and corrosion. This study explores the suitability of Cantor HEAs, specifically the CoCrFeMnNi matrix enriched with elements such as Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta, and W, for nuclear applications. These elements were selected for their high atomic numbers and neutron capture cross-sections, vital for enhancing gamma-ray and neutron shielding properties. Utilizing advanced computational and theoretical methods, the elastic modulus of these alloys was theoretically estimated while their radiation attenuation capabilities were evaluated through different Monte Carlo simulation codes. CoCrFeMnNiW demonstrated the highest elastic modulus (340.9 GPa), indicating significant mechanical robustness. The addition of W resulted in superior gamma-ray attenuation, with the lowest gamma-ray transmission factors and highest neutron shielding effectiveness among the studied alloys. The calculated mass attenuation coefficients and effective removal cross-sections values demonstrate the potential of these HEAs to provide effective radiation shielding. Our results showed a clear correlation between the elastic modulus and radiation attenuation properties, suggesting that mechanical stiffness does not compromise shielding capabilities. The comprehensive analysis of thermodynamic and structural parameters, including entropy of mixing, mixing enthalpy, and Valence Electron Concentration (VEC), provided essential insights into phase stability and microstructural characteristics. It can be concluded that CoCrFeMnNiW and its related Cantor HEAs as promising materials for advancing nuclear technology, offering a new horizon for safer and more efficient nuclear systems.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ1Modifying the magnetic characteristics of ferrimagnetic TbFeCo by adjusting the thickness of the L11-ordered CoPt
Yüzüak, Gizem Durak
This study investigates structural and magnetic properties of 200 nm TbFeCo ferrimagnetic thin films. These films were formed by depositing L11-ordered CoPt buffer layers on Si(100) substrates, followed by (111)-textured Pt layers. The TbFeCo films were produced at room temperature by magnetron sputtering, and their characteristics were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and magnetic force microscopy (MFM). The above-mentioned techniques were used to figure out the films’ crystallographic structure, magnetic properties, and the surface characteristics. XRD analysis showed that TbFeCo films without the CoPt layer were only crystalline in the Pt(111) and Pt(222) directions. Conversely, films that were buffered with a CoPt layer developed the L11-ordered CoPt phase, especially in the CoPt(222) and CoPt(444) directions. This issue was linked to an increase in the CoPt unit cell parameter, indicating bulk-like crystallinity, particularly in the 20 nm CoPt layer, while the TbFeCo layer remained amorphous. The FIB-SEM showed that the layers were all gathered the thickness of 20 nm for Pt, 10 or 20 nm for CoPt, and 200 nm for TbFeCo with homogeneous distributed the elements in the Tb46Fe41Co13 composition matrix. Magnetic characterization from VSM measurements ranged from 5 to 350 K and revealed significant differences based on CoPt thickness. At 300 K, the coercive field (HC) got stronger as the thickness of the CoPt layer risen up. For 0, 10, and 20 nm CoPt, the HC was 2.8, 3.3, and 4.1 kOe, and the MS values were about 205, 229, and 234 emu/cm³, respectively. The L11-ordered CoPt underlayer facilitated strong exchange coupling at the TbFeCo/CoPt interface, which is responsible for these improvements. AFM and MFM measurements indicated that surface roughness, and hence magnetic pinning sites, increased dramatically with CoPt thickness. These pinning sites inhibited magnetic domain wall motion, increasing HC values in the out-of-plane direction. This kind of magnetic stability leads to excellent qualities, like higher HC and better thermal stability up to 350 K, that make these films interesting for use in spintronics and data storage, where HC and thermal resilience are important.

Acar, Ramazan; Akbas, Ergun; Koycegiz, Cihangir; Esit, Musa
Climate change and anthropogenic factors have a significant impact on rainfall variability. In this study, the trends of monthly total precipitation in the transboundary Euphrates-Tigris River Basin (ETRB), where these effects are intensely observed, were analyzed by trend analysis methods with various perspectives. After decomposing the monthly total rainfall series (1964–2021) obtained from 18 stations representing 12 months of the year, statistical (Mann-Kendall, Wilcoxon, Onyutha), graphical (Innovative Polygon Trend Analysis, IPTA), Trend Polygon Star Concept, TPSC), sub-trend (Onyutha) and spatial trend analyses were performed. Based on the results, it was observed that rainfall in the basin has significant spatial and temporal variability. A monotonic strong decreasing trend was observed in cold months with high rainfall, while an increasing trend was observed in warm months with low rainfall. Extreme rainfall during the winter months has shifted towards the end of the cold months. Graphical and statistical analysis methods have shown strong consistency in identifying monotonic trends. However, the implementation of various methods provides specific insight (transition, sub-trend, etc.) into the temporal and spatial variability of rainfall. Sub-trend analysis shows that rainfall characteristics in the cold months show a significant change before and after the 1990–2000 period. In warmer months, this variability is significantly affected by local and global driving forces. The central and marginal parts of the ETRB have different rainfall characteristics. During cold months, the monotonic trend (decreasing) is significant in the central part. In warm months, the monotonic trend (increasing) increases its intensity in the eastern parts.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ3New Record of Peregriana labiata (Rossmässler, 1835) (Gastropoda: Lymnaeidae) in Kelkit Basin (NE Anatolia): Effect of Altitudes on Distribution and Morphological Characters
Kocabaş, Filiz Kutluyer; Kocabaş, Mehmet; Kara, Cemil; Bozali, Nuri; Gürlek, Mustafa Emre
Abstract: Peregriana labiata (Rossmässler, 1835) is a broadly distributed Palaearctic freshwater snail belonging to the family Lymnaeidae and it is an intermediate host of Fascioloides manga causing Fasciolosis as a snail-borne trematode disease. The disease negatively influences the livestock sector and human health with increasing prevalence in the last decades. As a helpful tool, geographical distribution of P. labiata was assessed in Kelkit Basin (North-East Anatolia) as a risk area for fasciolosis transmission. 85 sampling sites were sampled from different habitats in Kelkit Basin (NE Anatolia). The first evidence of P. labiata occurrence was revealed in the basin. In addition, the effects of altitudes on abundance, distribution and shell characters of P. labiata were investigated in several ecosystems. The highest values for SL (standard length) and W (weight) were recorded as 11.80 ± 0.10 mm and 0.17 ± 0.14 g at an altitude of 1233 m, respectively. The highest occurrence of P. labiata was observed at altitudes of 728 m (17%) and 1223 m (16%). PCA analysis showed a strong correlation between SpH (spire height) and AW (aperture width). Overall, the broad range of samples gathered from different altitudes strengthened the idea that the shell characteristics vary with altitude.

Adali, Zafer; Yeter, Fatih; Çoban, Mustafa Necati; Sarı, Sacit
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of influential and easily understood sustainability principles. SDG2 defines Zero Hunger, which is once again a key goal in the SDGs. A sustainable food system depends on the grazing land footprint, one of the elements of the ecological footprint. For food security to be maintained, the grazing land footprint has to be taken into consideration. In order to provide adequate global food systems and mitigate climate change, research on the stochastic features of grazing land footprint is crucial. The goal of this research is to look at the stochastic characteristics of the grazing land footprint in 13 nations that produce almost two-thirds of the world’s milk and meat. The study includes data for 13 nations over the years 1961–2022. Several unit root tests are conducted to provide more precise data about the effectiveness of the policy shocks, including whether or not they allow for repeated, smooth structural breakdowns. The results show that because the series is prone to following its long-term trends, shocks cannot lead it to diverge from those trends. Thus, any shocks brought on by policies cannot have a lasting effect on the series. However, the series includes a unit root. The unit root tests have made it clear that any policy shocks would have a long-lasting effect on the series and that policymakers may set a goal for the series. Policy suggestions have been provided for the investigated nations in conjunction with these results.

The walking catfish Clarias batrachus is popular and affordable in Southeast Asian countries. The development of breeding technology for this species is ongoing, with sperm cryopreservation being a key aspect of study that supports its breeding program. Cryopreservation is an essential method in fish breeding, particularly for sustaining breeding initiatives that supply larvae throughout the years. However, this process can lead to oxidative stress, which may decrease sperm quality due to structural and physiological damage, including DNA fragmentation. Adding an antioxidant to the freezing medium could help mitigate these negative effects and maintain sperm quality. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of various types and concentrations of antioxidant on the quality of C. batrachus sperm post-cryopreservation. Four types of antioxidants were tested: ascorbic acid, Myoinositol, alpha-tocopherol, and Butylated Hydroxytoluene, each at concentrations of 0, 20, 40, and 60 mg/L. Ringer solution, 5% DMSO and 5% egg yolk were used as extender and cryoprotectants, respectively. Sperm samples were stored in liquid nitrogen for 2 weeks, after which sperm quality was analyzed. The results showed that both the type and concentration of antioxidant had a significant effect (p<0.05) on all measured sperm quality parameters. Ascorbic acid at a concentration of 40 mg/L produced the best results, achieving 62.33% motility, 66.00% viability, and 61.67% fertility. Electrophoresis analysis showed no DNA fragmentation in any of the treatments, indicating that the genetic structure of sperm remained intact. Ascorbic acid at 40 mg/L is the most effective antioxidant for cryopreservation of sperm C. batrachus.

Background: This study aims to investigate the effects of postharvest melatonin (ML) and salicylic acid (SA) applications on fruit quality and biochemical properties in tomatoes. The potential synergistic effects were investigated by applying these compounds to the ‘Depar’ tomato variety grown in Bolu in the 2024 production season. The tomato fruit that were mature and free from physical damage were selected and sterilized according to predetermined criteria. Afterwards, ML and SA solutions (1 mM) were sprayed on each fruit and then the fruit were stored at 5 ± 0.5 °C and 90 ± 5% relative humidity. Pomological and biochemical measurements and analyses were carried out on fruit stored for 24 days in three different periods (8th, 16th and 24th days). Results: With the extension of storage period, the increase in spoilage and ripening symptoms such as weight loss (8.53%), pH increase (5.01) and soluble solids content (SSC) accumulation (4.95%) was observed in tomatoes. In addition, the significant decreases occurred in malic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid, oxalic acid, vitamin C and phenolic compounds. However, SA and ML applications slowed down these negative changes, with the best results generally obtained in the SA + ML combination. This combination significantly limited the decreases in weight loss and chemical contents, delayed the ripening of tomatoes and maintained their nutritional value. Especially in early and middle storage periods (8th and 16th days of the cold storage), SA + ML applications gave the most effective results. However, some protective effects were reduced by the 24th day the cold storage. Conclusion: SA and ML applications are recommended as an effective biopreservation strategy to extend the shelf life of tomatoes, prevent commercial value loss and maintain quality. This study demonstrates the potential of using bioactive compounds to preserve the quality and nutritional values of tomatoes after harvest.

Sahilli, Yeliz Çakir; Korkmaz, Volkan
Abstract: Glyphosate (GLY) is one of the most widely used herbicides in modern intensive agriculture to enhance crop production. However, the chemical additives in commercial formulations and the active ingredient itself can adversely affect biological and chemical processes in aquatic organisms. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of sub-lethal concentrations of GLY (0, 0.23, 0.58, and 1.17 μg/L) on oxidative stress biomarkers—namely lipid peroxidation (measured as malondialdehyde, MDA), and antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, SOD; catalase, CAT; and reduced glutathione, GSH)—in Daphnia magna after 24 and 96 h of exposure. The results showed that SOD activity increased in all treatment groups compared to the control at both time points while CAT activity decreased in all groups. GSH and TBARS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) levels were significantly elevated after 24 and 96 h in all exposed groups. Overall, D. magna was sensitive to sub-lethal concentrations of GLY, and changes in SOD and CAT activities, as well as GSH and TBARS levels, these biomarkers can serve as useful indicators for detecting glyphosate-induced oxidative stress and water pollution.

Keçeci, Ali; Koçak, Berna; İpek, Yeliz
Promising clinical results were obtained in the treatment of coronavirus disease by using favipiravir, umifenovir, remdesivir, ribavirin, lopinavir–ritonavir, oseltamivir, etc., antiviral drug active agents. In this study, quantitative analysis of oseltamivir neuraminidase inhibitor was carried out using electrochemical techniques. DNA-based electrochemical biosensors are generally used for analysis of anticancer and antitumor medicines. The present study introduces a novel DNA-based electrochemical sensor for neuraminidase inhibitor drug oseltamivir. The developed sensor enables the analysis of oseltamivir in a more environmentally friendly, more economical and faster way. It can be used in quality control laboratories in tablet production and will provide traceability of the drug in drug development studies and analysis in urine samples. For this purpose, a modified glassy carbon electrode was used as a working electrode. The glassy carbon electrodes alone cannot detect the oseltamivir. Guanine base, which was determined to interact with oseltamivir and found in the deoxyribonucleic acid structure, was used as an electrochemical biosensor agent. The guanine base was immobilized on glassy carbon electrode using glutardialdehyde as a crosslinker material and GA2–Guanine/GCE electrode was achieved. Two working ranges were determined for the Britton-Robinson buffer solution, tablet sample, and urine sample containing oseltamivir. The lowest detection limits (LODs) were calculated as 7.16 × 10−9 mol L−1, 9.05 × 10−9 mol L−1 and 6.19 × 10−6 mol L−1 for Britton-Robinson buffer solution, tablet sample solution, and urine sample solution, respectively. The recovery ratio for the proposed sensor ranged between 86.6 and 103.5%.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ2Experimental comparison of conventional and ultrasonic-assisted high-speed drilling of glass fiber reinforced epoxy composites
Ağar, Salih; Mahmat, Aybars; Doğan, Akar
Glass fiber reinforced epoxy composites are favored in several industries, including automotive and aerospace, owing to their superior strength-to-weight ratio. Drilling is a prevalent machining procedure employed to add fasteners for laminate assembly. Nonetheless, drilling these composites presents significant challenges due to the abrasive characteristics of the reinforcement, necessitating an examination of machining performance. During the drilling of composites, cutting temperature, thrust force, and delamination damage are primary concerns. In recent years, high-speed ultrasonic drilling, an innovative machining technique designed to address these challenges, has garnered significant interest. This investigation involved high-speed ultrasonic drilling and conventional drilling of glass fiber reinforced epoxy material. In the studies, optimal conditions were studied by evaluating thrust force, cutting temperature, and delamination damage by varying speeds, feed rates, and frequencies. The thrust force was 11 N in the traditional approach at 40,000 rpm, but it was recorded at 9 N with the ultrasonic method. Moreover, with ultrasonic drilling, cutting temperatures decreased by over 25% relative to traditional drilling, attributable to the harmonic motion that dissipates heat in the drilling zone. Analysis of the drilling region revealed a notable enhancement in damage, particularly in delamination, with the application of ultrasonic drilling. The experimental results indicate that ultrasonic machining enhances machining performance.

Artuğer, Fırat
The most used approach for data encryption is block cipher. One of the most important structures for block cipher algorithms is undoubtedly s-boxes. The s-box structure used in the AES algorithm contains 256 values. Therefore, obtaining powerful s-boxes is a rather difficult search problem. Because the search space is very large (256!). In this study, a new method based on squirrel search algorithm (SSA) is proposed to overcome this problem. The proposed method is displacement-based. In an s-box taken at the entrance, stronger s-box structures are sought by changing the location of the elements. The most important innovation in this study is that the elements to be displaced in the s-box were selected with the positioning states of the SSA. The chaotic Gompertz map was used for the initial population. Four different s-boxes were produced with the method developed thanks to the effective positioning states of SSA. As the fitness function, the nonlinearity value, which is the most important evaluation criterion of an s-box structure, was used. The proposed four s-box structures increased up to 110 nonlinearity values after only 4500 iterations. Here, it has been shown that the algorithm can be effective in all s-boxes by generating four different s-boxes. Considering these results, it has been determined that the proposed method gives more effective results than most methods in the literature.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ1Bridging experiment and simulation: Image processing-driven FEA of carbon fiber powder reinforced LDPE
ARIKAN, Volkan; DOGAN, Akar
Short fiber-reinforced polymers are widely used in engineering applications due to their improved mechanical performance and processability. However, accurately predicting the elastic behavior of such composites remains a challenge, especially when fibers are randomly distributed and lack defined orientation. To address this, this study investigates the mechanical properties of composite materials developed by incorporating carbon fiber powder (CFP) into a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) matrix at different reinforcement ratios (3 %, 6 %, and 9 %). The effects of CFP content on elastic modulus, tensile strength, and ductility were examined experimentally and through finite element analysis (FEA). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to analyze the microstructure, and image processing techniques were applied to quantify fiber orientation, which was then integrated into the FEA framework (Oriented FEA). Results indicate that CFP addition increases stiffness and tensile strength while reducing ductility, with 3 % CFP specimens showing the most favorable balance of mechanical properties. The proposed image-based orientation modeling approach provides improved simulation fidelity and offers a scalable methodology for evaluating the mechanical behavior of short fiber-reinforced composites.

In this study, the structural and optical properties of CdO thin films subjected to heat treatment at different temperatures were investigated. CdO films were deposited on glass substrates by thermal evaporation. X-ray diffraction technique (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements were taken to investigate the crystal structure and surface morphology of the prepared films UV-vis spectrometer was utilized to measure the optical properties. As a result of XRD measurements, it was observed that the CdO thin film without and with heat treatment has a cubic crystal structure. The increase in the sharpness of x-ray peaks in CdO thin films with heat treatment means an increase in crystallization, and the calculated crystal sizes showed that the crystal size generally tends to increase with a rise in the applied annealing temperature. As can be seen from the SEM images, it was observed that the small grains on the surface were replaced by large grains as a result of the merger of small grains with each other with rising annealing temperature. The optical band gap Eg, which changes with heat treatment, was calculated to be between 2.45 and 2.27 eV. It was concluded that heat treatment improves the conductivity of CdO thin films by reducing the Eg value.
