- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ2Depositional settings and basin-fill evolution of the restricted platform system on the Intra Pontide belt during the Late Eocene-?Early Oligocene transition, western black sea region, Turkey
Us, Muhammed Sami; Tekin, Erdoğan; Akgün, Funda; Kayseri-Özer, Mine Sezgül; Varol, Baki Erdoğan
This study presents an integrated sedimentological, microfacies, and palynological analyses of the Late Eocene–?Early Oligocene (Priabonian–?Rupelian) Akçapınar Formation, exposed along the Soğanlı Stream in the Intra-Pontide Belt of the Western Black Sea region, Turkey. The formation, which overlies the evaporitic Pürçükören Formation and locally the Soğanlı Formation, records deposition in restricted shallow-marine to a lagoonal setting during a phase of significant tectonic and climatic reorganization. Detailed field mapping and measured stratigraphic sections, supported by petrographic, XRD, and SEM analyses, reveal mud-supported textures, limited faunal diversity, and thin-shelled gastropods, consistent with low-energy, brackish conditions. Palynological assemblages, identified here for the first time, refine the age constraints and document freshwater influence, whereas mineralogical data indicate alternating arid (smectite-rich) and humid (chlorite–illite-rich) intervals. Microfacies patterns (Mf1–Mf4) and lithofacies associations (Lf1–Lf8) were synthesized into three-dimensional depositional models, illustrating progressive basin restriction, episodic subaerial exposure, and evaporite precipitation. The multi-proxy approach, integrating sedimentology, microfacies, palynology, and mineralogy, refined the depositional model of the Akçapınar Formation, revealing facies heterogeneity driven by the interplay of tectonically induced basin isolation, relative sea-level fluctuations, and paleoclimatic oscillations during the Eocene–Oligocene transition, and providing new insights into the paleogeographic evolution of the northern Neo-Tethys during the final stages of its closure.

The vagus nerve plays a modulatory role in the gut-brain axis. Intestinal barrier dysfunction and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) leakage into the systemic circulation are associated with several conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and migraine headache. This study investigates the impact of non-invasive transauricular vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) on the neuroinflammatory markers and pain behavior following an acute LPS challenge. Sprague–Dawley rats (n = 28) were given LPS or vehicle and subjected to tVNS or sham intervention in an acute LPS animal model that mimics the systemic consequences of barrier dysfunction. Behaviors were evaluated at the baseline and 6 h later, complemented by testing the levels of serum and brain neuroinflammatory markers. Behavioral analyses revealed that LPS exposure reduced the time spent in the open arm, grooming duration, and periorbital mechanical pain thresholds, and increased freezing duration. The tVNS intervention reversed these behavioral changes induced by LPS. LPS administration triggered elevated serum levels of IL-6, CGRP, haptoglobin, and VE-cadherin. LPS also increased IL-1β, PAR-2, haptoglobin, CGRP, and HMGB1 levels in the brain tissue. The tVNS intervention reversed the effects observed in the brain, but it did not change the elevated levels of inflammatory molecules in the systemic circulation. tVNS has the potential to modulate neuroimmune interactions, with an early impact on the brain during LPS surge. tVNS may have potential therapeutic benefits in managing pain-related disorders associated with LPS endotoxemia.
- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ1Impact of soft-storey irregularity on the seismic safety of reinforced concrete buildings
Tektaş, Şeyhmus; Tam, Gürkan; Yön, Burak
This study evaluates the effect of soft-storey irregularity on the seismic fragility of reinforced concrete buildings by comparing fragility curves based on inter-storey drift and element damage. This comparison highlights the novelty of the study. For numerical analyses, a typical four-storey reinforced concrete building with a ground storey of 4.5 m and typical storeys of 3 m, having a current storey plan, was modeled as both a regular and soft-storey building. To model nonlinear behavior, the assumption of lumped plastic hinges at the ends of the structural elements was made. Static pushover analyses of the building models created in SeismoStruct 2022 were performed until the roof displacement reached 3% of the building height, while nonlinear incremental dynamic analyses were carried out using 11 real ground motion records obtained from AFAD. The records were scaled between 0.1 g and 1.0 g and applied in the x- and y-directions for both buildings, yielding a total of 440 dynamic analyses. Static pushover analyses generated capacity curves for both regular and soft-storey buildings. Incremental dynamic analyses revealed maximum responses, inter-storey drifts, damage distributions, and fragility curves for both regular and soft-storey buildings. Fragility curves were obtained using both HAZUS inter-storey drift limit values and TBEC 2018 section-based strain limits. The results showed that fragility curves generated based on inter-storey drifts yielded more sensitive results than those generated based on damage at the critical storey. Furthermore, it was determined that for an earthquake acceleration of 0.5 g, the probability of a soft-storey building collapsing was 30% higher than that of a regular building.
- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ3Characteristics of the growth rate, fatty acid profile, and shell content of the freshwater snail Viviparus contectus (Millet, 1813)
Kocabaş, Filiz Kutluyer; Kizak, Volkan; Özçiçek, Esin; Kocabaş, Mehmet; Yilmaz, Ökkeş
Freshwater snails are a nutritious food source, providing vital amino acids, minerals, and protein with low lipid levels. Hence, the adaptation ability, growth rate, fatty acid (FA) profile, and shell content of Viviparus contectus were determined. Biometric measurements were recorded for 6 months. Over the 6-month cultivation period, specific growth rates were recorded as 0.32% · day-1 for shell length and 0.92% · day-1 for body weight. The FA profile of the freshwater snail included a total of 32 compounds with saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated FAs represented by 13, 10, and 9 types, respectively. Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) exhibited the highest concentration, followed by saturated fatty acids (SFAs) s at 35.14% and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) at 14.57%. Stearic acid (C18:0), erucic acid (C22:1 n-9), and arachidonic acid (C20:4 n-6) were determined as the most abundant FAs within the saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated FAs classes, respectively. The energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy spectra analysis revealed that the shell powder composition consisted of the elements, such as carbon, oxygen, calcium, iron, manganese, and silicium. Overall, V. contectus showed a clear increase in growth over the cultivation period, and future studies are needed to obtain the best culture conditions and intensive production of the species.
- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ2Influence of Low-SiC Content on the Tribological and Electrical Properties of Cu Composites Produced by Spark Plasma Sintering
Çelik, Ertuğrul
In this study, copper matrix composites reinforced with varying silicon carbide (SiC) contents (0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1 wt.%) were fabricated using spark plasma sintering (SPS). The effects of SiC reinforcement on the microstructure, hardness, porosity, electrical conductivity, and tribological performance were systematically investigated. Brinell hardness values increased with higher SiC content, reaching up to 76 HB for the 1 wt.% SiC composite. This improvement was accompanied by a gradual increase in porosity from 0.6 to 2.1%. Electrical conductivity decreased from 93% IACS to 66% IACS with increasing SiC content. Tribological tests revealed that the specific wear rate was significantly reduced, reaching as low as 1.1 × 10−4 mm3/N m at 15 N due to the formation of a protective tribolayer. These results demonstrate that incorporating small amounts of SiC can substantially improve hardness and wear resistance, while maintaining acceptable electrical performance, making Cu-SiC composites promising candidates for durable electrical contact applications.

- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ1Effect of Ni–Co–Cr additions on the microstructural and magnetic field–induced radiation shielding behavior of Fe–Si–B alloys
Taşgın, Yahya; Taşar, Fatih
Fe–Si–B–based amorphous metallic glasses were synthesized via powder metallurgy and arc melting, followed by alloying with 10 wt% Ni, Co, or Cr. The alloys were examined in both as-cast and heat-treated conditions to assess the combined influence of composition, thermal relaxation, and magnetic processing on their mechanical and radiation-shielding properties. Microstructural characterizations (XRD, SEM, EDS) confirmed homogeneous alloying and the presence of Fe2B, Fe0.91Si0.09, and Ni/Co/Cr-boride phases. After alloying and heat treatment, the average Vickers hardness increased from 313 HV (base Fe-Si-B) to 480 HV. All synthesized samples were exposed to a 1 T magnetic field, and their gamma-ray attenuation behavior was subsequently evaluated using a Ba-133 source (80.99–383.85 keV). After magnetic exposure, the linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) increased by ≈ 3–4% for Co-doped alloys, ≈ 2% for Ni-doped and base Fe–Si–B alloys, and < 0.5% for Cr-doped alloys, accompanied by a corresponding reduction in half-value layer (HVL) from 1.86 cm to 1.79 cm. The fast-neutron removal cross-section (ΣR) also exhibited a modest rise (≈2%). These enhancements are attributed to field-induced microstructural relaxation, including domain alignment, internal-stress reduction, and partial free-volume collapse, which subtly modify the local electron-density distribution without altering the bulk composition. Overall, the findings demonstrate that Ni–Co–Cr alloying, combined with controlled magnetic-field exposure, offers an effective and non-destructive route to enhance both the mechanical durability and γ-ray/fast-neutron shielding performance of Fe-based amorphous alloys, highlighting their potential for magnetically tunable protective coatings and advanced smart-shielding applications. In some applications, both the magnetic properties and radiation shielding properties of the material used are important. This study investigates the effects of Ni, Co, and Cr on the magnetic properties of the Fe-Si-B alloy, while also demonstrating changes in radiation shielding properties.

- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ3Bioactive compounds in mucus and shell microstructure of the European ear snail (Radix auricularia)
Kocabaş, Kutluyer; Kocabaş, M.; Kizak, V.; Korkmaz, B.
Radix auricularia is a non-native and invasive freshwater snail species and it may have destructive impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem structure. In recent years, snail mucus, as a sticky substance, has garnered significant attention in the medical and cosmetic industries due to its content of numerous bioactive compounds. Despite frequently being discarded as waste due to the build-up of calcium carbonate crystals through biomineralization, shells of freshwater snail serve multiple functions in aquatic environments and have potential industrial applications. Hence, this study aims to identify bioactive compounds in the mucus and analyze the shell microstructure and mineralogy of the European ear snail (Radix auricularia). Bioactive constituents of mucus were characterized by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-FID-MS) analysis. We also conducted analyses on the organic matrix of shells from R. auricularia using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Our results indicated that ten compounds are characterized by Eicosane (34.16%), 9-Octadecen-1-ol, (Z)-(11.86%) and N,N-Dimetylpalmitamide (5.55%) as the main components of mucus. The antioxidant potential, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties of Eicosane was in notable quantity in the mucus. In addition, the elemental composition of shell powder comprised of carbon, aluminium, oxygen, calcium, iron, magnesium, silicium, manganese, sodium, sulphur and phosphorus. Aragonite emerged as the dominant mineralogy in the inorganic layer of their shells, as confirmed by XRD. Overall, individual compounds of mucus could be isolated and purified mucus compounds could have applications in pharmaceuticals and health sectors. The shells of R. auricularia offer potential for diverse applications and contribute to environmental sustainability as valuable biomaterials.
- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ1Modeling stack voltage and remaining useful life of proton exchange membrane fuel cells using deep neural networks
Dogan, Gurkan; Imak, Andaç
Currently, various energy conversion systems are being developed to reduce environmental impacts. Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), which stand out with their high efficiency characteristics, have emerged as an important alternative. However, these advantages, along with high costs and uncertainties regarding remaining useful life (RUL) estimation, restrict their further commercialization, especially in the automotive industry. This study presents a forecasting framework using a long short-term memory (LSTM) architecture enhanced with the Bahdanau attention mechanism for predicting RUL and long-term degradation trends. The model thus exhibits a performance that can more effectively capture dependencies in time series and adaptively weight significant time steps. Furthermore, the tree-structured parzen estimator (TPE) was chosen for the appropriate selection of hyperparameters in the developed forecasting framework. The validity, stability, and performance of the proposed model under different operating conditions were examined on the FC1 and FC2 datasets. Experimental studies have shown that the proposed method is the most successful among the best methods, achieving RE metric values of 1.628 × 10−3, 0.003 × 10−1, 99.16 × 10−2, and 0.044 × 10−1 respectively in estimating the best RMSE, MAPE, R2, and RUL.

This study aims to comparatively investigate the production of jam from Rheum ribes L., a plant known for its functional properties, using both conventional and ohmic heating methods, and to evaluate the effects of these methods on quality parameters. Ohmic heating was applied at three different voltage gradients (25, 30, and 35 V/cm) and compared with conventional heating. In both methods, jam samples were produced until they reached a total soluble solids (TSS) content of 66%, after which total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant activity, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and individual phenolic compounds were analyzed. According to the results, the highest TPC (488.37 mg gallic acid equivalent [GAE]/kg), antioxidant activity (595.6 mg ascorbic acid equivalent [AAE]/kg), and vitamin C content (23.6 ppm) were obtained at 35 V/cm. In contrast, the conventional method yielded significantly lower values for these parameters and a higher HMF content (29.9 ppm). Ohmic heating enabled a much shorter processing time, reducing energy consumption by approximately sixfold and contributing to better retention of nutritional components. Additionally, higher voltage gradients resulted in improved preservation of individual phenolic compounds (such as gallic acid, catechin, and rutin). The findings indicate that, compared to the conventional method, ohmic heating offers higher efficiency, better retention of bioactive compounds, and a more sustainable production approach due to its lower energy requirement.
- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2026The European Charter of Local Authorities and Türkiye in the Internationalization Process
Atmaca, Yıldız; Boyali, Handan
The European Charter of Local Authorities is an important international document adopted by the Council of Europe in 1985 with the aim of protecting the democratic and independent structure of local authorities and guaranteeing the autonomy of local authorities. This condition enables local governments to make independent decisions within their own areas of authority and responsibility, to encourage public participation in local government processes, and to have control over financial resources. Thus, local governments are no longer an extension of the central government but are becoming a structure that is closer to the public and more accountable. Türkiye, which ratified the European Charter of Local Self-Government in 1991, has tried to implement administrative reforms to strengthen the local government system. Increasing the authority and responsibilities of local governments, improving financial autonomy, and increasing citizen participation have become priority issues in the restructuring of local governments in Türkiye. However, Türkiye's reservations on some articles while accepting the charter show that it has not been able to fully implement the autonomy of local governments. For example, articles 4 and 9 of the charter limit the determination of the duties and authorities of local governments by the central government and support financial autonomy. However, the influence of the central government on local governments in Türkiye is still quite high, and the distribution of financial resources is under the control of the central authority. This is one of the most important factors limiting the autonomy of local governments. In terms of the internationalization process, Türkiye’s adoption of the European Charter of Local Self-Government has been an important step towards the country’s compliance with international democratic norms and standards. This process is also closely related to Türkiye’s European Union membership goals. This process is also closely related to Türkiye’s European Union membership goals. Türkiye aims to accelerate the harmonization process with the European Union through local government reforms and to develop the understanding of local democracy in the international arena. Türkiye’s full compliance with the principles of autonomy and participatory democracy in local governments will enable it to act in accordance with the spirit of the European Charter of Local Self-Government and to move further in the democratization process in the international arena. In this context, this study aims to examine Türkiye's internationalization process within the framework of the European Charter of Local Authorities. The contribution of the Charter to the Turkish local government system was evaluated using the literature review method.
- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ1Electrochemically assisted leaching of rare earth carbonates in non-aqueous green solvents: Solvent design, characterization, and process optimization
Cihangir, Salih
This study presents a systematic approach to the design, characterization, and application of non-aqueous green solvents (NAGSs) for the leaching of rare earth carbonate hydrates (RECHs). Four NAGSs based on choline chloride, ethylene glycol, and various carboxylic acids were synthesized and evaluated for their physicochemical and electrochemical properties. Among the evaluated formulations, the choline chloride–ethylene glycol–Na₂EDTA·2H₂O mixture (N1) and the chloride–levulinic acid mixture (N2) were found were found suitable for both traditional and electrochemically assisted leaching due to their optimal viscosity, conductivity, and electrochemical stability. Electrochemical assistance significantly enhanced leaching efficiency, with improvements ranging from 22 % to over 300 % for certain elements compared to conventional methods. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the application of an oxidative potential facilitates the protonation and dissolution of RECHs, likely through the generation of localized acidic environments and the formation of intermediate species. The FTIR analysis confirmed the dissolution of carbonate phases and the formation of rare earth–ligand complexes, particularly in the N1 system, where new bands associated with carboxylate and amine coordination were observed. Importantly, the proposed electrochemically assisted method can be applied to different primary or secondary sources in both aqueous and non-aqueous solutions. The results demonstrate the advantages of combining non-aqueous green solvents with electrochemical assistance as an environmentally benign alternative to conventional acid-based leaching, especially for challenging carbonate forms of rare earth elements. This work provides important guidelines for the development of sustainable hydrometallurgical processes, with future directions including solvent recyclability, selective recovery, and environmental assessment.

- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ1Sleep quality in children with epilepsy and their mothers: A cross-sectional study
Veziroğlu, H.; Kemer, D.
Background The aim of this study is to evaluate the sleep quality of children with epilepsy and their mothers, and to identify the factors affecting sleep quality. Methods The sample comprised 103 mothers of children with epilepsy aged 318 years. Data were collected during face-to-face interviews using the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), the Mann-Whitney U test, and correlation analysis. Results According to PSQI, 76.7% of mothers were found to have poor sleep quality. The mean total CSHQ score was 49.99 ± 7.60, indicating clinically significant sleep problems among the children. Mothers' PSQI total scores were significantly associated with income status, number of children, duration of epilepsy, and time spent in digital environments (p < 0.05). Children's CSHQ total scores were significantly associated with age at first seizure, seizure frequency, occurrence of seizures during the last three months, presence of nocturnal seizures, number of antiepileptic drugs used, and ownership of a phone/computer (p < 0.05). Conclusion It was found that children with epilepsy experienced sleep problems related to bedtime resistance and daytime sleepiness, and that their mothers had poor sleep quality. Therefore, the development of supportive intervention programs is recommended to prevent and manage sleep problems in children with epilepsy and their mothers. Implications to practice Multidisciplinary collaboration and nurse-led interventions should be implemented to promote sleep health and improve the quality of life of children with epilepsy and their families.
- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ1Hydrogeochemical controls on chromium speciation and potential human health risks in surface waters of an ultramafic mining watershed
Kutlu, Banu; Baydar, Tarık; Yıldırım, Vesile; Konurhan, Zekeriya
Accurate assessment of chromium contamination in mining-influenced watersheds requires distinguishing between the environmentally contrasting Cr(III) and Cr(VI) species, yet environmental monitoring and risk assessments still rely predominantly on total chromium concentrations. This study evaluated whether chromium speciation provides additional information beyond operational total chromium for assessing chromium occurrence and potential human health risks in an ultramafic, mining-influenced watershed. Surface-water samples were collected from 28 sampling stations across the Pülümür and Ovacık regions of the Eastern Anatolia Basin (Türkiye) between March 2025 and February 2026. Chromium speciation was determined using species-specific UV–Visible spectrophotometric methods and integrated with hydrochemical characterization, multivariate statistical analyses, mineralogical investigations (XRD, SEM–EDS, and FTIR), and deterministic and empirical-bootstrap human health risk assessments. Operational total chromium, defined as the sum of separately measured Cr(III) and Cr(VI), ranged from below the detection limit to 578.13 µg L−1. For contextual screening, this calculated value exceeded World Health Organization (WHO) drinking-water guideline for total chromium at 14 stations; however, it was not an independently measured total-Cr concentration. The highest Cr(VI) concentration occurred at a localized hotspot, whereas Cr(III) predominated throughout most of the watershed. Nevertheless, Cr(VI)-based screening thresholds were exceeded at multiple stations under the assumed untreated drinking-water ingestion scenario, indicating that operational total chromium alone did not consistently identify the spatial distribution of Cr(VI)-related potential risk. Screening-level hazard quotient (HQ) estimates were higher for children than for adults; however, direct untreated consumption of the sampled surface waters was not verified. Mining-influenced stations generally exhibited higher chromium concentrations, although the relative contributions of geogenic weathering and mining-related mobilization could not be quantitatively apportioned. Overall, chromium speciation provided additional environmentally and toxicologically relevant information beyond operational total chromium for evaluating chromium mobility and screening-level potential human health risks in this ultramafic watershed.
- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ3Diverse optical soliton solutions to the generalized resonant nonlinear Schrödinger equation through an integral method
Atas, Sibel Sehriban; Ali, Karmina K.
This paper is concerned with the generalized resonant nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an arbitrary index, which describes ultra-short pulse propagation in optical fibers. The study uses the main integration method: the modified generalized Riccati equation mapping method, to construct and analyze combined forms of optical soliton solutions. The results are multifaceted, revealing a variety of optical soliton solutions, such as rational solutions in hyperbolic functions, combined solutions of hyperbolic and trigonometric functions, bright, singular, , kink-shaped, smooth kink, and periodic singular. Moreover, two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and contour graphs of some obtained optical soliton solutions are plotted to illustrate the importance of the generalized resonant nonlinear Schrödinger equation, using suitable values of physical parameters. Two-dimensional graphs are used to illustrate the dynamic behavior of the solutions, taking into account the impact of the nonlinear index n and the time parameter t. The obtained optical solutions are considered novel and most likely have not been reported in the literature before.

- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ1Enhancement of chlorogenic acid application on the quality, biochemical properties, and cold storage stability of sweet cherry fruit
Gundogdu, Muttalip; Sen, Fatih; Aglar, Erdal; Kılıncer, Mustafa
This study investigated the effects of chlorogenic acid (ChlA) applications on postharvest quality characteristics and biochemical components of sweet cherry (Prunus avium L. cv. ‘0900 Ziraat’) fruit. Fruits were treated with control, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 mM ChlA and stored at 4 ± 0.5 °C for 21 days. Storage significantly increased weight loss and decay rate while reducing respiration rate and biochemical quality. At the end of storage, the 1.5 mM ChlA treatment reduced weight loss from 8.32% in the control to 5.20% and decreased decay rate from 9.16% to 4.50%. ChlA applications also slowed changes in soluble solids content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA), and pH, contributing to a more stable chemical composition. The highest vitamin C content at the end of storage was recorded in the 1.5 mM ChlA treatment (11.71 mg 100 g⁻¹), compared with 9.97 mg 100 g⁻¹ in the control. Similarly, chlorogenic acid significantly delayed losses of organic acids and phenolic compounds; for example, quercetin content was maintained at 6.80 mg 100 g⁻¹ in 1.5 mM ChlA-treated fruit compared with 3.78 mg 100 g⁻¹ in the control after 21 days of storage. Principal component analysis (PCA) and correlation analysis revealed strong relationships among quality attributes and biochemical compounds and demonstrated the positive role of ChlA in preserving overall fruit quality. Overall, chlorogenic acid, particularly at 1.5 mM, effectively reduced postharvest quality losses and enhanced biochemical stability during cold storage.

Imak, Andaç
This study, focusing on sustainable energy production and particularly the hydrogen (H2) economy, presents an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) framework for accurately predicting H2 production from sucrose photocatalysis catalyzed by LaFeO3 (GLFO) and the H2 concentration in syngas derived from biomass conversion. The research was conducted along two main directions: (i) deep learning (DL) architectures comprising nine specially designed recurrent neural network-based models and (ii) six conventional machine learning (ML) algorithms. For both H2 production systems, the best-performing models were identified and further interpreted using explainable AI (XAI) based on SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP). Among all investigated algorithms, a hybrid One-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network–Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory–Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit (1D-CNN–BiLSTM–BiGRU) model demonstrated the highest predictive performance. Using 10-fold cross-validation, the proposed model achieved outstanding accuracy, with an R2 value of 0.9987 ± 0.0011 for photocatalytic H2 production prediction and 0.9980 ± 0.0006 for syngas H2 concentration prediction. These results highlight the potential of the proposed framework as a precise, reliable, and practical methodological approach for modeling and optimizing complex thermochemical energy systems.
- MakaleYayıncıda açık erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Radon anomalies environmental radiation transfer and radiological risk assessment in a fault controlled Lake system
Dartay, Mürşide; Yılmaz, Mücahit; Kırat, Güllü
This study investigates the coupling between radon (222Rn) anomalies, seismic activity, hydrogeochemical transport, and radiological risk in Lake Hazar, an active fault controlled lake located along the East Anatolian Fault Zone (EAFZ), Türkiye. Soil gas and dissolved 222Rn concentrations were periodically monitored on a monthly basis from September 2024 to August 2025 using a DURRIDGE RAD7 detector coupled with RAD H2O accessories and the results were evaluated with regional seismicity within a 50 km radius. Natural radionuclide activities (40K, 238U, and 232Th) were determined using 2″ × 2″ NaI(Tl) well-type gamma spectrometry detector. 222Rn anomalies were assessed using μ + σ, μ + 2σ thresholds, the Standardized Radon Index (SRI), and the Dobrovolsky preparation radius model. Soil 222Rn ranged from 87.6 to 541.8 Bq/m3, with the highest value (SRI = 2.81) recorded in September 2024, approximately one month before the Mw 6.0 earthquake in October 2024. Although this temporal coincidence is consistent with previous observations reported for tectonically active regions, the present dataset does not allow a definitive causal interpretation. Dissolved 222Rn varied from 34.1 to 69.8 Bq/L and showed delayed but detectable responses during periods of Mw ≥ 5 seismic activity. Radiological indices calculated for fish tissues remained far below international safety thresholds: Hin and Hex were < 1, Raeq values were substantially lower than the recommended limit of 370 Bq/kg, and absorbed dose rates were below the global average value of 59 nGy/h reported by UNSCEAR. In addition, annual effective dose values from fish muscle consumption remained well below the public exposure limit of 1 mSv/year recommended by ICRP, and ELCR values were within the low risk range commonly used in environmental radiological assessments. These findings indicate that active fault controlled lake systems may provide integrated environmental settings where tectonic stress, 222Rn migration, aquatic radionuclide transfer, and radiological exposure processes interact. Novelty statement: This study presents an integrated environmental investigation of soil gas and dissolved water 222Rn variability, radionuclide transfer in aquatic biota, and radiological risk assessment within the tectonically active Hazar Lake system located on the East Anatolian Fault Zone (EAFZ), Türkiye. The novelty of the present study lies in the following aspects: • Simultaneous evaluation of soil and dissolved water 222Rn anomalies together with seismic activity in a fault controlled lake ecosystem. • Application of the Standardized Radon Index (SRI) approach for normalized temporal interpretation of radon anomaly behavior in both soil gas and aqueous environments. • Integration of tectonic hydrogeochemistry with environmental radioactivity and aquatic radionuclide transfer assessment. • Combined investigation of radon anomaly behavior and radionuclide accumulation in fish tissues within the same tectonically active environmental system. • Inclusion of radiological risk indices (Hin, Hex, Raeq, Iγ, AGED) together with internationally accepted reference values for environmental and public health interpretation. • Development of a multidisciplinary environmental monitoring framework linking lithospheric, hydrospheric, and biospheric processes in active fault controlled lake environments. To the best of our knowledge, this is among the limited studies combining 222Rn anomaly monitoring, aquatic radionuclide transfer, and radiological risk assessment within an integrated tectonic lake ecosystem framework.

Kirat, Güllü; Erdem, Özlem
This study investigated the enrichment factor (EF) and geochemical relationships of rare earth elements (REEs) in different grain size fractions of soils collected from Başören village, Kuluncak district, Malatya province, Türkiye. A total of 22 surface soil samples were collected and separated into five grain size fractions (< 75, 75–150, 150–180, 180–250, and > 250 μm), yielding 110 samples. Concentrations of La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Yb, Lu, and Y were determined by ICP-MS. EF values were calculated using Al as the reference element, and Pearson correlation was applied to evaluate the relationships between REEs. Strong positive correlations were observed among most REEs (r = 0.999–1.000, p < 0.01), whereas weaker correlations were shown between Eu and Gd elements and La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Tb, Dy, Ho, Yb, Lu, and Y elements. Moderately positive relationships were determined between Al and REEs, with coefficients of determination (R2) ranging from approximately 0.33 to 0.54, indicating that REE distributions are primarily controlled by aluminosilicate minerals and fine-grained fractions. EF values varied between sampling areas and grain size fractions. While negligible to moderate enrichment was observed in most samples, significant to very high enrichment was observed in some samples, particularly for Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Yb. Samples T16 and T20 showed the highest enrichment levels, with Gd reaching very high enrichment classes (EF = 20–40). The results show that the spatial distribution and enrichment patterns of rare earth elements are largely influenced by lithogenic sources and grain size-dependent mineralogical characteristics.

Gulmez, Nihan; Kockal, Niyazi Ugur
Geopolymer mortars show significantly higher shrinkage than normal Portland cement mortars. So, one of the most important disadvantages of these promising alternative binding materials for their wider applications is the cracking occurring by shrinkage. Different inserts and fibers are used in fresh mixtures in order to control drying shrinkage cracks and to provide mechanical capacity. The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of using both metal particles (iron particles) and metallic fibers (steel particles) in geopolymer composites to reduce drying shrinkage. In addition, microstructural properties of composites were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses and causes of shrinkage were investigated in detail. Mixtures containing 20% silica fume have 38.4% lower drying shrinkage than slag-based mixtures. In slag-based composites, decreases in drying shrinkage were found as 18.8% and 49.1% when adding 10% iron particles or 10% steel particles compared to metal-free composites.

Rare-earth oxide nanoparticles offer a strategy to tune dielectric films via interfacial polarization while maintaining low-loss insulating behavior. Here, polystyrene/samarium oxide (PS/Sm2O3) nanocomposite films containing 0, 1, 3, 5, and 10 wt.% Sm2O3 were fabricated by solvent casting and evaluated as a low-loss dielectric for frequency-sensitive electronic applications. FTIR, XRD, SEM/EDX, and XPS confirmed successful Sm2O3 incorporation, preservation of the PS structure, formation of PS/Sm2O3 interfacial regions, and Sm3+/Sm–O species. XRD revealed amorphous PS with increasingly intense crystalline Sm2O3 reflections, whereas SEM/EDX showed relatively uniform filler distribution at low and moderate loadings and partial agglomeration at 10 wt.%. Dielectric spectroscopy at room temperature from 1 kHz to 1 MHz showed a frequency-dependent response governed by interfacial polarization and limited charge transport. At 1 kHz, the dielectric constant increased from 8.67241 ± 0.00280 for pure PS to 10.13061 ± 0.00641 for PS-10, while the loss tangent remained low (∼ 0.068). The dielectric loss increased moderately from 0.59535 ± 0.00236–0.69194 ± 0.00710, and AC conductivity rose from (3.31202 ± 0.01314) × 10−10 to (3.84935 ± 0.03948) × 10−10 S cm−1. These results indicate interface-controlled dielectric enhancement without conductive percolation, highlighting PS/Sm2O3 films for capacitor dielectric layers, insulating films, flexible electronics, and frequency-sensitive dielectric technologies.
