The wastewaters containing organic and inorganic pollutants after many industrial processes such as metal plating, mining, textile, alloy, battery and industrial chemicals, are often discharged to environment. Heavy metals among these pollutants have highly stable, toxic, non-degradable and carcinogenic characters. They affect not only ecological system, but also human health and many life forms. Therefore, these contaminants should be eliminated or reduced to allowable levels before releasing to environment. Most of heavy metals have toxic character even at low concentrations of about 0.1-0.3ppm. Treatment technologies such as filtration, ion exchange, precipitation, electrodeposition, reverse osmosis, sedimentation, and adsorption have been applied for removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. Adsorption is one of the most common and widely applied methods to eliminate the metal ions from waste solutions because of its simplicity and cost effectiveness. Activated carbon, clay minerals, ion exchange resins and various agricultural residues can be used as adsorbent materials in this process [1-3].

Kucukgul, Altuğ; Kucukgul, Azime
Chemical composition of the essential oil was analyzed by GC-MS, and found to contain the phenol (40.95 %) as major component. Results showed that Y. ruckeri (3 × 107cfu fish-1) infection caused the characteristic symptoms on rainbow trout (petechial hemorrhages on the surface of body and liver). Y. ruckeriinducedinhibitions of Cas-3, Cas-8, p53 and HSP-70. After the administration of thyme essential oil (10 mg kg-1 diet) to infected fish tissues, Cas-3, Cas-8, p53 and HSP-70 mRNAs were up-regulated by 9.31, 9.18, 9.58, and 6,1 fold change, respectively. According to the results of the study, the inhibitions seen all analyzed genes were due to Y. ruckeri infection. However, they were entirely increased by thyme treatment. Thus, targeting pro-apoptotic proteases by agents such as T. vulgaris could improve therapeutic options for infectious disease in fish.

This study aims to explore the optimum conditions for P. eryngii var. ferulae in adsorption of sulfamethazine (SM) from synthetic solutions via reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD). The optimum conditions were optimized using the response surface methodology (RSM) developed by the application of the quadratic model associated with the central composite design. For this aim, RSM was employed to determine the effects of some parameters on this adsorption process by fungal biomass as an effective and available adsorbent. The investigated parameters were initial concentration of sulfamethazine (70–235 mg L−1), solution pH (3–7), adsorbent dosage (0.3–1.5 g), and contact time (5–25 min). The significant factors on each experimental design response were identified from the analysis of variance. The results of RSM analyzes revealed that optimum conditions of initial SM concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, and contact time for maximum COD removal (82%) were achieved as 400 mg L−1, 11, 1.46 g, and 15.4 min, respectively. The results showed that dead biomass of P. eryngii var. ferulae were an appropriate adsorbent for the removal of COD in the SM medium from synthetic solutions.

Korunur, Murat
In this work, under the assumption that the universe is locally rotationally symmetric (LRS) Bianchi type-II and filled with anisotropic dark uid (dark energy and dark radiation), we investigate whether the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) is still valid. We also consider another important condition for LRS Bianchi type-II spacetimes whereby the model expansion is proportional to the shear, which leads to B = An (where n is a constant and A and B are the metric potentials). Based on this, we derive a general circumstance for the GSLT and find that its validity depends on the anisotropies of both the dark uid and the metric potentials. We conclude that the GSLT still holds at all times even if these two anisotropic conditions are removed from the results.

Göktaş, Oktay; Işık Göktaş, Nebile
In this study, we use Hough Transform as a test tool to investigate the quality of the electron beam lithography. A graphene like thin film of metal layer is fabricated on top of GaAs substrate by electron beam lithography. Hough Transform is applied to the SEM images of the fabricated pattern and the quality of the lithography process is quantitatively investigated. All the existing critical dimensional measurements on the SEM images which would otherwise take several days are done in a single step. The power and potential use of Hough Transform for the SEM image inspection especially for the quality test of nano-patterning processes is demonstrated.

Sabanci, Serdal; Icier, Filiz
Sour cherry juice having total soluble solids (TSS) of 19.2% was evaporated up to 65% TSS at vacuum (gauge pressure of 580 mm-Hg) by applying ohmic heating at three different voltage gradients (10–14 V/cm). Total process times were determined as 40, 55, 75, and 85 min for 14 V/cm, 12 V/cm, and 10 V/cm, and vacuum evaporation (VE), respectively. The change of moisture content during ohmic assisted vacuum evaporation and VE processes were investigated by seven different empirical models. The best fitting model was Midilli model for three different voltage gradients and VE. The electrical conductivity values at different voltage gradients varied between 0.41 and 1.13 S/m for different TSS contents. The changes of EC values were examined in detail for three different regions; heating up period, first evaporation period, and second evaporation period. EC increased until a critical % TSS content (32% TSS), then remained constant for certain time (until 45% TSS) depending on voltage gradient, and then it had tendency to decrease. Ohmic heat generation increased sharply during heating period, then decreased dramatically during evaporation periods. It is recommended that ohmic heating could be alternatively used as the heat source to shorten the process times of vacuum evaporation applied for concentration of fruit juices.

- MakaleYalnız künye2017Scopus SJRQ1Passive flow control in the near wake of a circular cylinder using attached permeable and inclined short plates
Ozkan, Gokturk M.; Firat, Erhan; Akilli, Huseyin
The main objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of attached permeable plates in suppressing nominally two-dimensional vortex shedding from a fixed cylinder. The permeable plate along the entire span of the cylinder was made of a chrome-nickel screen and was attached normal to the cylinder surface. The main parameters of the study are porosity of the permeable plate, β, and the plate angle of the cylinder-plate arrangement, θ, with respect to the freestream. Experiments were performed using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Flow Visualization Techniques. Additionally, drag force measurements were carried out in a wind tunnel to analyze the effects of permeable plates on drag coefficient of the circular cylinder. The results revealed that the use of a permeable plate successfully suppresses the vortex shedding downstream of the circular cylinder by reducing the velocity fluctuations in the wake, elongating the vortex formation region further downstream and attenuating the vortex shedding frequency. The porosity values of β=0.4 and 0.5 with plate angles in the range of 35°≤θ≤90° were found to be effective on suppressing the vortex shedding. Furthermore, both the drag coefficients of the cylinder-plate arrangement and the <TKE>maxwere reduced almost for all porosity ratios for θ<30°.

Özceylan, Eren; Mete, Süleyman; Çil, Zeynel Abidin; Drobne, S.; Zerovnik, J.; Zadnik Stirn, L.; Kljajic Borstar, M.
A growing number of cities are implementing bike-sharing programs to increase bicycle use. One of the key factors for the success of such programs is the location of bike stations in relation to potential demand. In this paper, potential locations of bike sharing stations in Gaziantep University campus are investigated to provide optimal utilization for users. To do so, first of all, 20 demand points and 20 potential bike stations are determined. Second, set covering mathematical model is handled to determine coverage capability of potential bike stations. Finally, P-center and P-median mathematical models are applied to set up potential stations and to assign demand points to the opened stations so that the total walking distance can be minimized. Computational experiments prove that our approach can find new potential bike stations which cover all demand points.

Bozkir, Hamza; Baysal, Taner
This study was evaluated the use of a novel concentration technique, a vacuum microwave evaporator (VME) in the production of clear apple juice concentrate and the investigation of its effects on the quality characteristics of the juice. The optimum processing conditions of the VME for apple juice concentrate were determined using response surface methodology. The apple juice concentrate was produced by VME, a rising film evaporator (RFE), and a rotary evaporator (RE) at the optimum process conditions. The results show that the evaporation rate of VME was three times higher than that of RE and was two times higher than that of RFE. VME produced minimum changes in the color of the apple juices (L*, a*, b*, ΔE, Hue°, and ΔC) compared to RE and RFE. VME was also found the best group that preserved the quality characteristics of apple juices (TTA, NEBI, and TPC) compared with conventional evaporation methods. Practical applications: Microwave heating provides volumetric heating of food. The concentration carried out quickly with the combined system, microwave and vacuum, which allows mass and energy transfer quickly at a short time. The physicochemical, and biochemical properties of the concentrated apple juices processed using VME were found to be better than those of the juices produced using the other conventional methods. The obtained data can be useful for optimization of fruit juice concentrate production in industrial concentration processes.

The rapid penetration of electric vehicles may lead to peak problems in a traditional grid so that some of the smart grid research is focused on charging strategies for electric vehicles. The charging problem is suitable for using a queue structure, and fuzzy queueing can be implemented for this purpose. This paper presents a fuzzy queueing based model, which can also control the power demand of electric vehicle charging. A charging model should guarantee that all charging requirements can be satisfied before vehicles leaving the charging stations. Simulation results exhibit that the proposed model decreases average waiting time of vehicles and also the proposed model utilize charging stations better than a traditional queueing model.

The goal of our study was to characterize the proportions and seasonal prevalence of Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7, Listeria spp. and Salmonella spp. in fermented sausages, sosis and salami. A total of 192 samples consisting of sausage (n=96), sosis (n=48) and salami (n=48) purchased from different butcher shops and markets in the Elazig Province of eastern Turkey for one year duration were processed and tested by culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the presence of E. coli O157:H7, Listeria spp. and Salmonella spp. L. innocua was found to be the most predominant Listeria spp. in fermented sausages and sosis whereas, L. monocytogenes (1.04%) and Salmonella spp. (1.04%) were detected at much lower prevalence in fermented sausage. No L. monocytogenes and Salmonella spp. were determined in salami samples. In addition, no Salmonella spp. was detected in sosis samples. L. welshimeri (12.5%) was observed most frequently on salami samples. No E. coli O157:H7 was isolated in any samples of fermented sausage, sosis and salami. Seasonal prevalence of Listeria spp. in fermented sausages, sosis and salami was highest in July, with no L. monocytogenes and Salmonella spp. being isolated during autumn, winter and spring months of the year. Although the proportion of L. monocytogenes in fermented sausages and sosis is much lower in the current study, the presence of L. monocytogenes in these samples in the Elazig Province of eastern Turkey could still present a major public health threat.

Ozdemir, Yasal; Gul, Muhammet; Celik, Erkan
University laboratories involve various occupational hazards during the research and course activities, which might affect health and safety of both researchers and students, including chemical, physical, electrical, mechanical, as well as ergonomic and psychosocial risk factors. There are many aspects open to improvements in Occupational Health and Safety management of laboratories, and it is required to deal with risks, reduce them in an acceptable level, and implement control measures. In this study, a risk assessment approach is proposed for the university laboratory operations. The proposed approach incorporates 5S methodology, failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA), interval type-two fuzzy sets (IT2FSs), analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and the VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR). AHP is injected into IT2FSs in the phase of evaluation and weighting of severity (S), occurrence (O), and detectability (D) parameters of FMEA. By applying IT2FVIKOR, it is aimed at prioritizing the emerged hazards in the chemical laboratory of the observed university. The proposed approach reveals the important hazards and suggests control measures for managing them. The study methodologically contributes to risk assessment in the knowledge, while a case study in a chemical laboratory of a newly established university offers an insight into education industry in safety improvement.

In a robotic assembly line, a series of stations are arranged along a conveyor belt and a robot performs on tasks at each station. Parallel assembly lines can provide improving line balance, productivity and so on. Combining robotic and parallel assembly lines ensure increasing flexibility of system, capacity and decreasing breakdown sensitivity. Although aforementioned benefits, balancing of robotic parallel assembly lines is lacking – to the best knowledge of the authors- in the literature. Therefore, a mathematical model is proposed to define/solve the problem and also iterative beam search (IBS), best search method based on IBS (BIBS) and cutting BIBS (CBIBS) algorithms are presented to solve the large-size problem due to the complexity of the problem. The algorithm also tested on the generated benchmark problems for robotic parallel assembly line balancing problem. The superior performances of the proposed algorithms are verified by using a statistical test. The results show that the algorithms are very competitive and promising tool for further researches in the literature.

The concentrations of ten metals in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farmed in the Karakaya Dam Reservoir (Turkey) on the Firat River were determined. The metal concentrations in rainbow trout did not exceed the maximum permissible levels. Biomagnification factors (BMF) of ten metals were < 1, indicating that these metals were not biomagnified. The estimated daily intake (EDI) of each metal was much lower than the respective tolerable daily intake (TDI). The target hazard quotient (THQ) for individual metal and total THQ for combined metals were lower than 1, indicating no health risk for consumers due to the intake of either individual metal or combined metals. The cancer risk (CR) value for toxic inorganic As was below 10–6, indicating no carcinogenic risk. According to the calculated maximum allowable consumption rates (CRmm), an adult may safely consume 28 meals of rainbow trout from the dam reservoir per month with no adverse carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health effects. According to these results, the consumption of rainbow trout farmed in this dam reservoir is completely safe for human health.
