- MakaleAçık Erişim2019The Power of Expectations in School Management: Pygmalion Effect
Gündüzalp, Seda; Özan, Mukadder Boydak
This study aims to discover the pygmalion effect, which suggests to affect a person's expectations from other people on the actions of those people, by taking the opinions of primary school teachers. In order for the study to reach its goal, triangulation technique, which is a mixed method design, has been used. A likert-type five-point scale made up of 18 items and a semi-structured interview form comprising two open-ended questions have been used to acquire data. The scale has applied to take the opinions of teachers working at the schools administered by 25 managers mastering in a postgraduate program without thesis at the Education Management Inspection Planning and Economy Department of Firat University Institute of Education Sciences. The quantitative and qualitative data acquired have been analyzed by means of statistical softwares. It has been concluded from the findings acquired from teachers' views reveal the reality and accuracy of pygmalion effect in the field of education, and show that high expectations pave the way for teachers' motivation, effort, active working, commitment as well as the growth of their enthusiasm. It is seen that high expectations will generally reveal high performance, while low expectations, due to their negative effects on employees, will cause decrease in motivation as well as unwillingness towards the job being done and therefore, a decline or stability in performance.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2019Scopus SJRQ1Performance Evaluation of Using Evotherm in SBS Modified Binder
Kök, Baha Vural; Yilmaz, Mehmet; Akpolat, Mustafa
Recently, various types of additives are being used to enhance the properties of bitumen. Until now, few researchers have handled the utilization of different additives in the same binder. In this study, styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) and Evotherm were used both separately and in the same blend. Dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and bending beam rheometer (BBR) tests were applied to SBS and Evotherm modified binders. SBS and Evotherm were added to pure bitumen in three different ratios. Sixteen different combinations were produced using the two additives, and a pure binder in the same binder was evaluated in the DSR test. Eight different combinations were evaluated in the BBR test. The conclusion reached was that the maximum usage of Evotherm (0.9%) induces a 20% reduction in the rutting parameter of both the 5% and 6% SBS modified binders. The 0.5% Evotherm with 4% and 5% SBS modification does not have an adverse effect on rutting performance. Evotherm modification could prevent the stiffness increment that originates from using the SBS additive, especially at high content. Using 0.7% Evotherm with 4% SBS can acquire the pure binder's low temperature performance. (c) 2019 American Society of Civil Engineers.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2019Evaluation of Middle School Mathematics Course Curriculums from 2005 to 2018
Ilhan, Aziz; Aslaner, Recep
In this research, secondary mathematics teaching programs published by the Ministry of National Education (MoNE) Education and Training Board (TB) from 2005 to 2018 (2005, 2006, 2009, 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2018), content (learning areas), vision, approach, philosophy, achievements, skills and implementation steps of the program. For this reason, it is preferred to use a qualitative analysis method for document review. Working in this method direction; the research was carried out in six steps: identifying research problems, collecting data, evaluating data, analyzing findings, evaluating the knowledge gained from the research topic, and making proposals. The data were analyzed with the coding key prepared from 2005 to 2018 to allow comparison of the seven secondary mathematics teaching programs published by MoNE TB. As a result of the research findings, mathematics curriculum developed from 2005 to 2009 it has been determined that the number of objectives are generally reduced, simplified and clarified, some arrangements have been made in the learning areas and the number of competencies and skills to be gained have been increased. In addition, the achievements in the curriculum have been reduced by simplifying, consolidating, or updating the curriculum and the length of the courses has been increased by a factor of four at the emphasis on mathematics. It is suggested that researchers who want to study in this area should conduct new research which analyzes in detail the between objectives, learning areas, targeted competencies and skills, achievements and the relationships class hours.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2019The Predictive Power of Teachers' Proactive Personality Traits on Their Problem Solving Skills
Sener, Gonul
In this research, it was aimed to determine the level of teachers' proactive personality traits predicting the problem-solving skills consisting of the sub-dimensions of confidence in problem-solving ability, personal control and approach-avoidance. The relational screening model was used in this research which was prepared in accordance with the quantitative research paradigm. Accordingly, the concept of proactive personality was discussed as an independent variable, and problem solving skills were discussed as dependent variables. It is seen that there is a positive and significant relationship between teachers' proactive personality traits and problem solving skills and confidence in problem-solving ability, approach-avoidance and personal control, which are the sub-dimensions of problem solving. Based on the ANOVA values are examined for all three sub-dimensions, it could be said that the value p is significant, in other words, the regression model is valid. According to the t-test results regarding the significance of the regression coefficients, it is seen that proactive personality traits are a significant predictor on the sub-dimensions of confidence in problem solving ability, approach-avoidance and personal control. Furthermore, according to Durbin-Watson values for all sub-dimensions, the assumption that there is no relationship between error terms is confirmed.

BackgroundThe positive effects of grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) on bone health, which is a potent antioxidant, are known but its effects on fracture healing are not sufficiently covered in the literature. This study aims to investigate the effects of GSPE on fracture healing and biomechanics of healing bone.Materials and methodsSixty-four adult Wistar-Albino male rats were divided into 8 groups of 8 animals in each group. Osteotomy was performed to the right femurs of all groups except the negative control (G1) and positive control (G2) groups, and intramedullary Kirchner wire was used for fixation. GSPE was given to half of the rats (G2-G4-G6-G8) 100mg/kg/day by oral gavage. The rats were sacrificed on the tenth (G3-G4), twentieth (G5-G6), and thirtieth (G1-G2-G7-G8) days, respectively, and histopathological, radiological, and biomechanical examinations were performed.ResultsHistopathological examination of the specimens from the callus tissues revealed that bone healing was more prominent in the groups supplemented with GSPE (G4, G6, G8). There was a statistically significant improvement in radiological recovery scores and callus volumes in groups with GSPE. When biomechanical strengths were evaluated, it was found that GSPE increased bone strength not only in fracture groups but also in the positive control group (G2).ConclusionsAs a result, this study showed that GSPE, a potent anti-oxidant, had a positive effect on bone healing and improved mechanical strength of the healing bone.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2019Public transportation graph: A graph theoretical model of public transportation network for efficient trip planning
Serin, Faruk; Mete, Suleyman
The presentation and usage of traditional graphs is very important for effective and fast solution of routing in public transportation. However, the traditional graph approach is unable to consider the passenger requests such as total travel time, minimum number of transfer and total distance of travel without pre-processing and/or post-processing. Moreover, the vehicles are not represented on traditional graph. In this paper, after analyzing the different kind of graphs, we propose a novel graph named as public transportation graph. The proposed graph models the public transportation system and considers distance, waiting time, travel time, self-transportation and number of transfers simultaneously for efficient trip planning. In this way, passenger requests can be met without pre-processing and post-processing. In addition, the vehicles are also considered and demonstrated in the proposed graph.

Extreme learning machine (ELM) and deep learning methods are well-known with their efficiency, accuracy, and speed. In this study, we focus on the application of ELM to a deep learning structure for person recognition with facial expressions. For this purpose, a new convolutional neural network (CNN) model containing Kernel ELM classifiers was constructed. In this model, ELM was not used only as a fully connected layer replacement and energy function was employed to generate feature maps for the ELM. There are two advantages of the proposed model. First, it is fast and successful in face recognition studies. Second, it can drastically improve the performance of a partially-trained CNN model. Consequently, the proposed model is very suitable for CNN models, where the learning process requires a lot of time and computational power. The model is tested with the Grimace data set and experimental results are presented in details.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2019AHP–TOPSIS integration extended with Pythagorean fuzzy sets for information security risk analysis
Ak, M. Fatih; Gul, Muhammet
Risk analysis (RA) contains several methodologies that object to ensure the protection and safety of occupational stakeholders. Multi attribute decision-making (MADM) is one of the most important RA methodologies that is applied to several areas from manufacturing to information technology. With the widespread use of computer networks and the Internet, information security has become very important. Information security is vital as institutions are mostly dependent on information, technology, and systems. This requires a comprehensive and effective implementation of information security RA. Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) are commonly used MADM methods and recently used for RA. In this study, a new RA methodology is proposed based on AHP–TOPSIS integration extended with Pythagorean fuzzy sets. AHP strengthened by interval-valued Pythagorean fuzzy numbers is used to weigh risk parameters with expert judgment. Then, TOPSIS with Pythagorean fuzzy numbers is used to prioritize previously identified risks. A comparison of the proposed approach with three approaches (classical RA method, Pythagorean fuzzy VIKOR and Pythagorean fuzzy MOORA) is also provided. To illustrate the feasibility and practicality of the proposed approach, a case study for information security RA in corrugated cardboard sector is executed.

Turbine faults in hydroelectric power plants not only reduce the operation time of the plant, but also cause a serious loss of income. One of the most important turbine faults is the turbine wheel wear caused by the cavitation and accordingly the other machine equipment faults which cause excessive vibration. In this study, cavitation intensity that the turbines have been exposed in operating conditions has been investigated. As a result of the calculations, optimum working conditions of the units have been determined with graphs obtained in various operating conditions. The obtained data can be easily applied to all hydroelectric power plants exposed to cavitation, and safe operating conditions can be determined.

Criminal justice response to terrorism and to the support for terrorism is still a hot topic in Turkey due to ongoing American military support for the PYD, which is Syrian wing of the internationally designated terrorist organization PKK whose indiscriminate attacks in Turkey has claimed lives of thousands of civilians. This article first discusses, in light of recent developments, whether exclusion of a separate crime of terrorism from the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court can be a valid argument against Turkey’s accession to it. After discovering some of the possible contributions of Turkey’s Rome Statute accession to its decades-long struggle against terrorism, this study concludes that Turkey’s all other concerns regarding the accession should be periodically reevaluated.

Widespread Maastrichtian siliciclastics and carbonates cropping out in the Haymana (S Ankara) and Nallihan (NW Ankara) districts in the northwest and central Anatolia basins include rich Orbitoides occurrences. Microborings in the Orbitoides tests are interesting to notify. In this study, the details of their morphologic structures were investigated. Microborings were analyzed in more than 650 equatorial thin sections of the Orbitoides tests and 100 hard rock thin sections. The abundance of microborings increases in the siliciclastics towards the Cretaceous/Palaeogene boundary (K/Pg). They were identified as Maeandropolydora osmaneliensis Nielsen and Görmüs, Maeandropolydora isp. Curvichnus semorbis Nielsen, Oichnus simplex Bromley, Oichnus isp. Maeandropolydora osmaneliensis Nielsen and Görmüs. Maeandropolydora isp., semicircular to circular microborings of Curvichnus semorbis Nielsen and Oichnus simplex Bromley are related to parasitic life modes. Irregular wider unidentified microborings are hermit type life mode tunnels. Abundance of the microborings might be related to shallower siliciclastic environmental conditions such as feeding and suitable Eh-pH, test shape, and easy entrance to the test for parasites. Smaller benthic foraminifera are seen in both microspheric and megalospheric Orbitoides tests as parasites. In conclusion, occurrences of microborings and encrustations are associated with parasitism by appearances of Maeandropolydora osmaneliensis Nielsen and Görmüs, Curvichnus semorbis Nielsen and Oichnus simplex Bromley and commensally attachment by microalgae.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2019Scopus SJRQ1Petrology and 40Ar-39Ar dating of paragneisses from the Devrekani Massif (Central Pontides, Northern Turkey): Implications for the Jurassic high-T metamorphism in an extensional tectonic environment
Gücer, Mehmet Ali; Arslan, Mehmet; Çimen, Okay; Sherlock, Sarah C.
The Devrekani Massif in the northern part of the Central Pontides (Northern Turkey) provides important clues to the regional tectonics and geodynamic processes associated with Jurassic high grade metamorphic conditions. This study reports new paragenetic assemblages, mineral compositions, whole-rock geochemistry and 40Ar-39Ar geochronological data from the paragneisses in the massif, and, discusses the P–T conditions and geodynamic implications of the Jurassic metamorphism during continental extension in the Central Pontides. Upper amphibolite to lower granulite facies paragneisses form one of the main lithological units in the massif. Within these, there are five different mineral parageneses with diagnostic mineral assemblages of: quartz, K-feldspar (An0-1Ab4-26Or73-96), plagioclase (An18-35), biotite [XPhl: 0.28–0.57; Mg/(Mg + Fe2+): 0.33–0.61], sillimanite, cordierite [Mg/(Mg + Fe2+): 0.48–0.71] and garnet (Alm43-80Grs0-18Prp5-23And0-4Sps10-33) with minor hercynite. Based on Na-in-Crd thermometry and GASP barometry results, the peak metamorphic conditions are 775 ± 25 °C and 6 ± 1 kbar in the massif. The field relations, petrography and bulk chemical data suggest that the paragneisses, derived from shale-wackestone and pelitic sedimentary protoliths, are typical rock lithologies of an active continental margin. They display enrichments in LILE over HFSE, coupled with negative Nb and Ti anomalies, which are geochemical signatures of subduction-related sources. It is likely that the peak metamorphism took place during the Middle–Upper Jurassic period (ca. 174–156 Ma), suggesting that the metamorphic rocks cooled to 300–350 °C at ca. 156 Ma. The mineral assemblages reveal that the prograde history passed from sillimanite zone conditions up to the cordierite-garnet-K-feldspar zone. The petrological and geochronological data indicate that the protoliths are related to multiple sources such as volcano-sedimentary successions. We conclude that the Devrekani Massif represents the products of pre-Jurassic sedimentation, and Permo-Carboniferous continental arc magmatism, overprinted by Jurassic metamorphism.

Sub-Sahara Africa is burdened with a high incidence of parasitic infections, including schistosomiasis, trypanosomiasis, trichomoniasis, and leishmaniasis. Currently, there is a rapid widespread development of resistance to prescription drugs for these neglected diseases. Microbes provide the largest chemical and biological diversity in drug discovery screening programs; therefore, our project seeks to explore microbes in the sub-region for new drugs. The oxylipin (9Z,11E)-13-oxooctadeca-9,11-dienoic acid (1) was isolated from the Ghanaian endophytic fungus, Penicillium herquei strain BRS2A-AR obtained from the leaves of a Laguncularia racemosa tree growing on the banks of the River Butre in the Western Regional wetlands of Ghana. Compound 1 was isolated on reverse phase HPLC at tR of 34.3 minutes. The structure of compound 1 was confirmed by a combination of mass spectrometry, 1D and 2D-NMR techniques. Compound 1 showed minimal antiparasitic activity when tested against Plasmodium falciparum 3d7 (IC50>100µM; aretesunate, IC50 36nm), Trypanosoma brucei brucei (IC50>100µM; Coptis japonica, IC50 8.20µM), Leishmani donovani (IC50>100µM; amphotericin B, IC50 0.32µM) and Leishmania major (IC50>100µM; amphotericin B, IC50 0.31µM). Compound 1 produced IC50 of 44.47µM when tested against Trichomonas mobilensis with metronidazole (IC50 5.20µM) as standard. These results show the potential to further engineer the structure of compound 1 into a potent anti-Trichomonas scaffold.

In this study, a poly(acrylonitrile-co-N-vinyl pyrrolidone)/zeolite (poly(AN-co-VP)/zeolite) composite was synthesized by in situ free radical polymerization (FRP). The structural properties of the composite were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The characterization results indicated that the composite had a homogeneous and 3-dimensional (3D) structure. The decomposition temperature and glass transition temperature (Tg ) were found as 410∘ C and 152∘ C, respectively. A poly(AN-co-VP)/zeolite composite was used to investigate the adsorption of brilliant green (BG) which is a water-soluble cationic dye. The kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics of adsorption were examined, and results showed that equilibrium data fitted the Langmuir isotherm model, and the adsorption kinetics of BG followed pseudo-second-order model. According to the thermodynamic properties, the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. Response surface methodology (RSM), which was improved by the application of the quadratic model associated with the central composite design, was employed for the optimization of the study conditions such as adsorbent mass, time, and initial dye concentration. The RSM indicated that maximum BG removal (99.91%) was achieved at the adsorbent mass of 0.20 g/50 mL, an initial BG concentration of 40.20 mg/L, and a contact time of 121.60 minutes.
