In the present study, tensile bond strength between on acrylic resin and a soft liner, molloplast B, was studied. To enhance the bonding capacity between these materials, acrylic resin surface was modified using ethyl methacrylate, iso-butyl methacrylate or tert-butyl methacrylate monomers. The monomers were applied onto the surfaces of methacrylate components for 60, 120 or 180 s and the bond strength values were obtained. The values were statistically compared. Changes on the modified surfaces were investigated by fourier transform infared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR). The highest bond strength value was obtained from 120 s treatments with ethyl methacrylate and the lowest value was obtained from 60 s treatments with iso-butyl methacrylate. These high alkyl monomers also had secondary interactions on the acrylic surfaces, evidenced by FTIR-ATR.

Çimen, Okay; Koç, Sukru; Sari, Ali
The study area is located in the south of Daghacilar village of Goynuk town in Bolu Province, Turkey. This study is a pioneering work in Turkey on the genesis and environmental characteristics of oil shales and other shallow marine-type sedimentary rocks regarding their major and rare earth element contents. The abundances of SiO2, Al2O3, TiO2, K2O and Fe2O3 decrease in the following order: claystone > oil shale > marl. CaO and MgO abundances are ranked in the decreasing order as follows: marl > oil shale > claystone. These results reveal the presence of two different genetic groups - detrital and marine. The same groups were also established in the correlation studies of elements. TOT/C and TOC contents of rocks observe the following order: oil shale > marl > claystone, and as a result of variations in redox conditions they also vary in a wide range. Total carbon and total organic carbon are positively correlated with the group representing clays and negatively correlated with CaO, MgO and MnO. That is why TOT/C and TOC are associated with clays. The positive correlations between some major oxides (e.g. SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, TiO2 and K2O) and REE might indicate that clays and iron oxy-hydroxyls play an important role in transportation and deposition processes. The only slight negative Ce and positive Eu anomalies and Ce/Ce* and Eu/Eu* values recorded in the depositional environment indicate low oxygenated and anaerobic (reducing) conditions.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2013Scopus SJRQ1Optimal feature selection for classification of the power quality events using wavelet transform and least squares support vector machines
Eristi, Huseyin; Yildirim, Ozal; Eristi, Belkis; Demir, Yakup
In this paper, a new optimal feature selection based power quality event recognition system is proposed for the classification of power quality events. While Apriori algorithm is capable of processing categorical data, an effective feature vector, which represents distinctive features of digital power quality event data, has been obtained by means of the proposed k-means based Apriori algorithm feature selection approach. The proposed k-means based Apriori algorithm feature selection approach is presented with a power quality event recognition system. In the power quality event recognition system, normalization and segmentation processes have been applied to three-phase event voltage signals. Using 9-level multiresolution analysis, wavelet transform coefficients of the event signals have been obtained. By applying nine different feature extraction processes to these coefficients, a 90 dimensional feature vector belonging to three-phase event voltage signals has been extracted. Optimal feature vector has been obtained by applying the k-means based Apriori algorithm feature selection approach to the obtained feature vector, which has been applied as the last step to the input of the least squares support vector machine classifier and recognition performance results have been obtained. Real power quality event data have been used to evaluate the performance of the proposed feature selection approach and power quality event recognition system. According to the results, the proposed k-means based Apriori algorithm feature selection approach and power quality event recognition system are efficient, reliable and applicable and classify three-phase event types with a high degree of accuracy. This study is aimed to determine the bioaccumulation of copper and zinc in hemolymph of freshwater crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) fed with zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) collected from Keban Dam Lake. This is the first study on bioaccumulation of Cu and Zn in hemolymph of males and females of A. leptodactylus. The average concentrations of Cu and Zn in the hemolymph samples were found out as 0.54 and 35.07 ppm respectively for male and 0.42 and 15.59 ppm respectively for female control freshwater crayfish. The levels of Zn in the hemolymph of both male and female ones among control and diet groups were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The Cu levels among control and diet groups in female ones were statistically significant (P < 0.05) but not in the male ones (P > 0.05). The results of current study revealed that feed treatment with boiling was not effective at the levels of metal bioaccumulation in hemolymph. It was observed that this metal bioaccumulation is more related with sex differences.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2013Scopus SJRQ1Survival of Listeria monocytogenes during Production and Ripening of Traditional Turkish Savak Tulum Cheese and in Synthetic Gastric Fluid
Dikici, Abdullah; Calicioglu, Mehmet
This study investigated the survival and acid tolerance of Listeria monocytogenes during the 2-day processing stage and 90-day ripening of Savak tulum cheese, a traditional cheese in Turkey. Experimental Savak tulum cheese was produced from raw sheep's milk that was inoculated with a L. monocytogenes mixture consisting of five strains (average 7.0 log CFU/ml) and was ripened at 6 degrees C for 90 days. Microbiological and chemical analyses and acid exposure experiments in synthetic gastric fluid (SGF) (pH 1.5 to 2.5) were carried out on days 1 and 2 during processing and on days 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, and 90 during ripening. The numbers of L. monocytogenes did not decrease during processing, but a total of 4.1 log CFU/g reduction was observed during ripening. Throughout the ripening period, L. monocytogenes cells survived direct 90-min exposures of the cheese samples to SGF. These results suggest that, although the pathogen numbers decreased in Savak tulum cheese ripened at 6 degrees C for 90 days, a sublethal environment may have occurred in the cheese during the production stage, activating the acid-tolerance mechanisms of the pathogen and allowing L. monocytogenes to maintain its viability in the SGF for 90 min.

PURPOSE. This in vitro study intended to investigate the mechanical and thermal characteristics of Valplast, and of polymethyl methacrylate denture base resin in which different esthetic fibers (E-glass, nylon 6 or nylon 6.6) were added. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Five groups were formed: control (PMMA), PMMA-E glass, PMMA-nylon 6, PMMA-nylon 6.6 and Valplast resin. For the transverse strength test the specimens were prepared in accordance with ANSI/ADA specification No.12, and for the impact test ASTM D-256 standard were used. With the intent to evaluate the properties of transverse strength, the three-point bending (n=7) test instrument (Lloyd NK5, Lloyd Instruments Ltd, Fareham Hampshire, UK) was used at 5 mm/min. A Dynatup 9250 HV (Instron, UK) device was employed for the impact strength (n=7). All of the resin samples were tested by using thermo-mechanical analysis (Shimadzu TMA 50, Shimadzu, Japan). The data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Tukey tests for pairwise comparisons of the groups at the 0.05 level of significance. RESULTS. In all mechanical tests, the highest values were observed in Valplast group (transverse strength: 117.22 +/- 37.80 MPa, maximum deflection: 27.55 +/- 1.48 mm, impact strength: 0.76 +/- 0.03 kN). Upon examining the thermo-mechanical analysis data, it was seen that the E value of the control sample was 8.08 MPa, higher than that of the all other samples. CONCLUSION. Although Valplast denture material has good mechanical strength, its elastic modulus is not high enough to meet the standard of PMMA materials.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2012Scopus SJRQ3An investigation on the sperm number and reproductive parameters of males in wild caught freshwater crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus, Eschscholtz)
Harlioglu, Muzaffer Mustafa; Kutluyer, Fitiz; Gür, Seyfettin
In the present study, the sperm number of wild caught Astacus leptodactylus was counted in the beginning of reproduction season. In addition, the reproductive system, testes, and vasa deferentia were weighed, and gonado-somatic index and testicular index were calculated. Twenty-five adult males of A. leptodactylus were used for the study. Significant linear regressions were found between body length (and weight) and sperm count, reproductive system weight, testes weight and vasa deferentia weight (P < 0.05). The mean sperm number of vas deferens for the size range of 41-56 mm carapace length crayfish was 5.72 +/- 4.54 x 10(9) sperm/distal vas deferens (DVD) section. Sperm number ranged from 4 x 10(8) to 8.5 x 10(9) sperm/DVD section. The results revealed that an increase in body weight causes an increase in sperm number. For example, mean sperm number was 3.87 +/- 2.87 x 10(9) for the weight range of 15-24 g crayfish, 5.01 +/- 2.62 x 10(9) for the weight range of 25-35 g crayfish and 7.37 +/- 2.87 x 10(9) for the weight range of 36-42 g crayfish. In conclusion, this study provides some data on the male reproduction characters and needs to be improved with details about the reproductive performance of males (i.e., sperm number and quality) in order to reach a maximum reproductive efficiency in captivity.

Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus Linnaeus, 1758) were infected with Streptococcus iniae (Cat No: ATCC 29178) and the plasma changes in the acute phase protein (APP) members were examined at different time periods. A total of 72 fish with average body weights of 60 g were used. Fish in the infected group (group I) were intraperitoneally injected with S. iniae at 3.3 x 10(5) colony forming unit (CFU) in 0.1 mL level to the fish. The other group (group II) was subjected to handling stress near the infection. The control group was constituted by providing optimum conditions. On days 7, 14, and 21, blood samples were taken from the caudal veins of the fish under the appropriate anesthesia. The samples were examined on the basis of APPs, C-reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen (FB), serum amyloid A (SAA), and transferrin (TF) and the changes in the plasma values were recorded. The internal and external symptoms seen during the examinations were detected as follows: the color concentration in 1-2 days in the infected groups, irregularity and retardation in the movements of the fish, hyperemic spots on the skin, and bloody effusion in the internal organs. In both of the infected groups, the CRP and SAA plasma values increased on days 7, 14, and 21 (P < 0.05). Remission was observed in the plasma TF levels in the first week; however, aft er the second week the levels reached normal values. Decreases in the FB levels of all of the samples were detected. Based on the data acquired in this study, it was concluded that changes in the plasma levels of the APP members can be used as a significant bioindicator in the pathogenesis of the disease in fish infections.

Cisplatin (CP) is one of the most effective cancer chemotherapeutic agent used against various solid tumors. This study was designed to investigate the antioxidant effects of Grape Seed Extract (GSE) on CP induced oxidative damage in rabbit kidney. The material of study was consist of 18 male New Zealand rabbit. Animals were divided into 3 groups. The first group was administered a single intraperitoneal (i.p.) close of 0.9% saline. The second group of rabbits was treated with CP (a single i.p. dose of 5 mg kg(-1) body weight); The third group of rabbits was treated with GSE by gavage at the dose of 250 mg kg(-1) body weight for 6 consecutive days before and 6 consecutive days after a single i.p. CP injection. As a result of CP administration, kidney function tests; urea, BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) and creatinine levels were increased (p<0.001). It was observed that CP increase malondialdehide (MDA) levels, the most important indicator of oxidative damage and decreased the activity of catalasc (CAT). Administration of CP did not caused statically a change in glutathione (GSH) levels and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-P-x) activity (p>0.05). GSE treatment has high levels of MDA to compared to normal levels (p<0.001) but not an increase in CAT (p<0.05). In CP treatment group, severe acute tubular necrosis was seen. It was determined that in CP+GSE group mild degenerative changes were received instead of acute tubular necrosis. GSE has been found to be partially protective effect against CP induced biochemical and histopathological changes in rabbit kidney.

The objective of the present work is to examine the effects of different doses (0, 10, 20 and 40 g kg(-1) fish diet mass) of kefir on growth performance and oxidant-antioxidant status in the blood and liver tissues of Coruh trout, Salmo coruhensis, in different periods (2 and 3 months). In this study, survival was more than 88.3%, and irrespective of dietary kefir levels at the end of the study. There were no significant differences in SGR (Specific growth rate), FCR (Feed conservation rate), CF (Condition factor) among fish fed diets with 0, 10, 20 and 40 g kg(-1) kefir, however, these growth values were significantly different in terms of durations between 2-month and 3-month treatment (P<0.05). Our results indicated that TAS (Total Antioxidant Status) and TOS (Total Oxidant Status) in blood tissues reduced with kefir treatment at the end of third month (P<0.05). Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in liver decreased in all groups compared with control group and a considerable extent decrease was observed in 40 g dose of kefir treatment at the end of third month. The data obtained from this experiment indicated that the same dose of kefir was more effective at the end of 3-month treatment than 2-month treatment (P<0.001). Although there was no statistical difference among groups, an increase in the glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) enzyme activity was observed in all groups compared to control groups. While catalase (CAT) activity decreased in all groups compared to control group at the end of second month (P<0.01), the decrease was insignificant level at the end of third month. In glutathione (GSH) levels, statistical differences were no observed in all groups compared to the control group with 2-month treatment while there were significant increases with 3-month treatment (P<0.001). It was concluded that kefir could play an antioxidant role and its effectiveness depended on dosage and time of application in Coruh trout, S. coruhensis.

Down syndrome is a chromosome abnormality with specific clinical symptoms and mental retardation caused by trisomy of chromosome 21. There is evidence that oxygen free radicals play an important role in the pathophysiology of many neuropsychiatric disorders. Although, it has not been investigated yet, several recent studies proposed that nitric oxide related to oxidative stress and arginase may have a pathophysiological role in mental retardation. The purpose of this study was to determine plasma nitric oxide levels and erythrocyte arginase activities in patients with Down syndrome and in healthy children. Plasma nitric oxide levels and erythrocyte arginase activity were measured in 20 patients with Down syndrome (median age: 15.6 +/- 7.5) and 20 age-matched healthy subjects (median age: 16.2 +/- 7.4). Significant differences were found between erythrocyte arginase activity of the patients with Down syndrome (35.2 +/- 2.7 U/g hemoglobin (Hb)) and those of healthy children (43.5 +/- 2.9 U/g Hb), (P < 0.05). But we have not found any statistical difference between persons with Down syndrome and control group for nitric oxide (P > 0.05). It was concluded that the level of erythrocyte arginase activity could be considered as a useful marker for assessing the level of mental retardation in children with Down syndrome.
