- MakaleAçık Erişim2013Scopus SJRQ1Effect of Tween 20 on antibacterial effects of acidic, neutral and alkaline decontaminants on viability of Salmonella on chicken carcasses and survival in waste decontamination fluids
Dikici, Abdullah; Arslan, Ali; Yalcin, Halil; Ozdemir, Pinar; Aydin, Isil; Calicioglu, Mehmet
The effect of Tween 20 on antimicrobial effects of acidic (lactic acid), neutral (cetyl pyridinium chloride) and alkaline (trisodium phosphate) decontaminants to reduce the numbers of Salmonella inoculated to broiler carcasses were studied. In addition, survival of Salmonella in waste decontamination fluids was investigated. For this purpose, an average of 7 +/- 1 log(10) cfu/ml Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium cocktail was surface-inoculated on to a total of 110 broiler carcasses. Contaminated carcasses were immersed in to tap water (control), lactic acid (LA) (1-2%), cetyl pyridinium chloride (CPC) (0.5-1%), or trisodium phosphate (TSP) (8%) and the combinations of these treatments with Tween 20 (TW20) (0.5%) for 15 min. Results indicated that. Salmonella numbers significantly decreased (P < 0.05) in all groups, except control and 1% LA. No significant difference was found between treatments with and without TW20. In waste decontamination fluids, 6.68 and 3.41 log(10) cfu/ml of Salmonella were recovered from control and CPC groups, respectively, while no viable Salmonella cell was detected in LA and TSP groups by direct plating. It was concluded that regardless of TW20, the antimicrobials tested were effective to reduce Salmonella in poultry carcasses. However, the pathogen may survive in neutral waste decontamination fluid such as CPC and can pose a risk for consumer health by contaminating the plant environment. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. - MakaleAçık Erişim2013Scopus SJRQ4Occurrence and Assessment of Chemical Contaminants in Drinking Water in Tunceli, Turkey
Demir, Veysel; Ergin, Sezai
The objective of this study was to analyze drinking water samples from 21 sites in the city center and seven municipalities of Tunceli, Turkey, in order to determine the presence of nitrate, nitrite, fluoride, bromate, pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), trihalomethanes (THMs), and some other chemicals. In all locations, the concentrations of chemicals investigated were below the permissible limits set by local and international organizations for drinking water. Low levels of nitrate (4.79 +/- 4.20 mg/L), fluoride (0.11 +/- 0.08 mg/L), and THMs (6.63 +/- 5.14 mu g/L) were detected in all locations. A low level of tetra, chloroethane, which is suspected to be a human carcinogen, was also detected in 8 locations in the range of 0.26-0.43 mu g/L. These contaminants may pose adverse health effects or minimum hazard due to long-term exposure. In all locations, bromate, benzene, total PAH, 1-2 dichloroethane, vinyl chloride, acrylamide, and epichloridine levels in drinking water samples were under detection limits.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2013Scopus SJRQ4Adsorption of the 2,2-Dichlorovinylphosphate on Raw and Modified Bentonites
Yönten, Vahap; Kubilay, Senol
This study aims to investigate the adsorption of the 2,2-dichlorovinylphosphate (DDVP) on raw and modified bentonite via high pressure liquid chromatography and infrared spectroscopy. The modified bentonites were prepared by adding HNO3 and Na2CO3. The Freundlich adsorption isotherm defines 2,2-dichlorovinylphosphate adsorption in aqueous and aqueous ethanol solutions through raw and modified bentonite. Variables such as temperature, time and pH were observed on 2,2-dichlorovinylphosphate adsorption. Then the capacity for maximum 2,2-dichlorovinylphosphate adsorption was measured on modified bentonite with HNO3 under the conditions of pH 3 and 40 degrees C. The modified bentonite with Na2CO3 clay used in experimental work played a major role on the adsorption of 2,2-dichlorovinylphosphate; thus modified bentonite with Na2CO3 is considered to possess better characteristics than modified bentonite with HNO3 and raw bentonite. The Freundlich isotherms of modified bentonite with Na2CO3 in aqueous-ethanol solution were found to be better than isotherms of aqueous solution for a much better 2,2-dichlorovinylphosphate adsorption.

Yüksel, Fahrettin; Demirol, Ferhat; Gündüz, Fatih
The population size was researched by using Leslie method on the zones of Keban Dam Lake where crayfish is fished for commercial purposes. The data were compiled by using effort expended and catch obtained by 28 fishing boats during 2012 crayfish fishing season. 28 fishing boats fished 16,867 kilograms of crayfish during the fishing season by using 45,600 pieces of crayfish fyke nets. It is determined that the quantity catch per unit effort (CPUE) varies between 2.74 to 6.35 kg/100 fyke nets/week during the 9 weeks fishing period. The population size at the beginning was estimated to be 28,450 kg (at minimum legal length of >= 10 cm). The 95% confidence interval of this estimation was calculated to be 25,607-32,533 kg. Similar researches on crayfish populations concluded that removal method can offer very important details.

The effect of dietary n-3 series fatty acids on the number of pleopadal egg and stage 1 juvenile in freshwater crayfish, Astacus leptodactylus was investigated. Crayfish were fed with n-3 series fatty acids supplemented diets and a control diet for 251days. Control diet did not comprise additional n-3 series fatty acids. However, D2, D3 and D4 groups were supplemented with n-3 series fatty acids at 1%, 2% and 3% level respectively. Results showed the beneficial effects of dietary n-3 series fatty acids on the production of pleopodal egg and stage 1 juvenile number. At the end of the experiment, pleopodal egg (from 177 to 234) and stage 1 juvenile number (from 167 to 225) increased significantly with increased dietary n-3 series fatty acid level. In addition, an increase in dietary n-3 series fatty acids led to an increase in number of pleopodal egg and stage 1 juvenile produced per gram of female crayfish weight. It can be concluded that the reproductive efficiency of A. leptodactylus (i.e., pleopodal egg and stage 1 juvenile number) can be improved in controlled hatchery conditions by adding n-3 series fatty acid into the diet of this species.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2013Scopus SJRQ2Chemical fingerprints of Raki: a traditional distilled alcoholic beverage
Gueven, Alper
Fourteen brands of commercial Raki samples were analysed chemically and compared with two samples produced in a local distillery, according to traditional methods, to determine whether the raw materials ( grape or raisin) and distillation practices result in distinguishable chemical fingerprints in the final product. The samples were analysed with respect to the content of trans- anethol, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, higher alcohols and other volatiles, using gas chromatography. Principal component analysis showed that chemometric analysis could be used to distinguish between traditional and flavoured Raki products. Copyright (C) 2013 The Institute of Brewing & Distilling

- MakaleAçık Erişim2013Scopus SJRQ2Characterization and pollution potential assessment of Tunceli, Turkey municipal solid waste open dumping site leachates
Demirbilek, Deniz; Önal, Ayten Oztufekci; Demir, Veysel; Uslu, Gulsad; Arslanoglu-Isik, Hilal
Environmental monitoring of leachate quality from an open municipal solid waste dumping site in Tunceli, Turkey was studied in this research. The most commonly examined pollution parameters were determined on a seasonal basis. The annual average 5-day biological oxygen demand (BOD5) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) values of station points were measured as 70 and 425 mg/L, respectively, and also the average BOD5/COD ratio (a measure of biodegradability) was calculated as 0.20. The low ratio of biodegradability and slightly alkaline pH values in the leachate samples indicated that the site was characterized by methanogenic conditions. The mean ammonium-nitrogen (NH4 (+)-N) and corresponding phosphate (orthophosphate) values were assayed as 70 and 11 mg/L, respectively. The average solids content in the leachates was measured as 4,681 mg/L (total solids) and 144 mg/L (suspended solids). Very low concentrations of iron, manganese, copper, and zinc in the leachate samples were found and the concentration of cadmium was measured below detection limits. Excessive amount of nutrients and high organic and inorganic pollutant content in the leachates pose serious pollution potential to the environment. Since no drainage system or bio treatment exists in this open dumping site, high permeability of natural soil at the site and in the surrounding area and very fractured and crackled rocks under natural soil are indicators of high groundwater pollution potential in this site.

The aim of study was to compare the effects of supplementation of food with herbal oils (Thymus vulgaris and Foeniculum vulgare) on biochemical properties and electrolytes of rainbow trout infected with Yersinia ruckeri. In total, 120 healthy fish (mean weight 84 +/- 1.02 g) were equally divided into four experimental groups. The experimental study was carried out for one week. The first group was control without supplementation and infection, the second group was infected and without oil supplementation, the third group was supplemented with oils (10 ml.100 g(-1) rates) for one week and infected with Y ruckeri and the last group was oil supplemented without infection. Results indicated that fish fed with dietary supplements showed enhanced bactericidal activity, total protein, albumin, cholesterol, triglyceride and bilirubin compared to the control (P < 0.05). As the value of herbal oils was increased in diets, the plasma glucose level decreased. The levels of K, Na, Ca, and Mg increased whereas Cl values decreased, compared to the control. It can be concluded that diet supplementation with herb oils used in this study can increase disease resistance by increasing levels of some biochemical parameters and electrolytes in rainbow trout to Y ruckeri infection.

The objective of the present study was to obtain data about cooking time and temperature of kiymali pide in the restaurants and to investigate thermal inactivation of E. coli O157:H7 during experimental kiymali pide making. A field study was conducted in randomly selected 23 of 87 pide restaurants. Processing parameters including oven temperature, cooking period and post-cooking temperature were determined. Kiymali pide samples were prepared using ground beef filling experimentally inoculated with E. coli O157:H7 (7.6 log(10) CFU/g). Pide samples were cooked at a conventional oven at 180 degrees C for 180, 240, 270, 300 and 330 s. Results of the current study suggest that cooking kiymali pide at 180 degrees C for at least 330 s (5.5 min) may provide sufficient food safety assurance (>= 6 log(10) CFU/g) for E. coli O157:H7. - MakaleAçık Erişim2013Scopus SJRQ3Effects of essential oil compounds on survival of Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli O157:H7 in cig kofte
Dikici, Abdullah; Ilhak, Osman Irfan; Çalicioglu, Mehmet
This study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of some essential oil compounds for the inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli O157:H7 in cig kofte. In experiment 1, a cig kofte batch was inoculated with high levels of E. coli O157: H7 or L. monocytogenes (7.00 log(10) cfu/g) and the batches were divided into 6 groups. Each group was treated with 18 mL/kg of normal saline, cineole, limonene, carvone, linalool, or eugenol. Treatment with carvone, linalool, and eugenol resulted in a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in the numbers of both pathogens. In experiment 2, the cig kofte was inoculated with the same pathogens and each group was treated with 0 (control), 20, 22.5, and 25 mL/kg of eugenol. Increases in concentration did not cause a difference in pathogen reduction. The results showed that eugenol, carvone, and linalool can be used for the inactivation of E. coli O157: H7 and L. monocytogenes in cig kofte or similar foods.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2013Scopus SJRQ3Effect of Fly Ash and Silica Fume on compressive strength, sorptivity and carbonation of SCC
Turk, Kazim; Karatas, Mehmet; Gonen, Tahir
In this paper, ASTM C 618 Class F Fly Ash (FA) at 25%, 30%, 35% and 40% and Silica Fume (SF) at 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% replacement of Portland Cement (PC) CEM I 42.5 in SCC was used to evaluate the effect of types and quantity of powder additions on compressive strength and permeations properties of SCC. To this end, eight types of SCC were designed, in comparison with Vibrated Traditional Concrete (VTC). The results indicated that SCC specimens with SF15 had the highest compressive strength with 73.87 MPa for 130 days. The sorptivity values of SCC specimens with FA and SF were lower than those of VTC specimens regardless of type and quantity of powder additions. On the other hand, the carbonation resistance of VTC was higher than that of SCC specimens containing both SF and FA for all accelerated carbonation periods. Consequently, it can be said that type and quantity of powder additions had an important effect on the correlation among the compressive strength and permeation properties of SCC.

Ates, Mehmet; Demir, Veysel; Adiguzel, Ragip; Arslan, Zikri
The increased use of nanosized materials is likely to result in the release of these particles into the environment. It is, however, unclear if these materials are harmful to aquatic animals. In this study, the sublethal effects of exposure of low and high concentrations of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) on goldfish (Carassius auratus) were investigated. Accumulation of TiO2 NPs increased from 42.71 to 110.68 ppb in the intestine and from 4.10 to 9.86 ppb in the gills of the goldfish with increasing exposure dose from 10 to 100mg/L TiO2 NPs. No significant accumulation in the muscle and brain of the fish was detected. Malondialdehyde as a biomarker of lipid oxidation was detected in the liver of the goldfish. Moreover, TiO2 NPs exposure inhibited growth of the goldfish. Although there was an increase (8.1%) in the body weights of the goldfish for the control group, in the low and high exposure groups 1.8% increase and 19.7% decrease were measured, respectively. The results of this study contribute to the current understanding of the potential ecotoxicological effects of nanoparticles and highlight the importance of characterization of NPs in understanding their behavior, uptake, and effects in aquatic systems and in fish.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2013Scopus SJRQ4Column Studies on Effect of Phosphate Immobilization on Removal of Metals from Stormwater Runoff in Bioretention Cell
Demir, V.; Bin-Shafique, S.
Batch studies indicated that low cost native materials such as loam soil, juniper mulch, hardwood mulch, pine mulch and sawdust performed efficiently as media in bioretention cell for removal of copper and lead from stormwater runoff. Juniper mulch performed best in batch studies was used in column studies. Column studies suggested that the presence of phosphate has a pronounced effect on metal immobilization. This is due to the formation of metal phosphates that have extremely low solubility. The remaining metals were adsorbed on bioretention media of the bioretention cell. Breakthrough adsorption and desorption curves for lead and copper were measured in presence and absence of phosphate immobilization. Copper reached a breakthrough curve in around 20 days and lead in 30 days. Column studies showed that in all samples addition of phosphate also decreased the leaching of lead and copper back to aqueous solution consistent with lead and copper immobilization.

Akkus, Sukran; Bal, Tulin; Karaaslan, Nagihan M.; Yaman, Emre; Kilinc, Ersin; Yaman, Mehmet
Five-step sequential extractions were employed to fractionation of Ni, Cr and Cu in soil polluted by anthropogenic activities and determine the mobility of the metals. Twelve samples were collected on an agricultural area that was located near an airport and intercity roads in Elazig-Turkey. Exchangeable, organically bounded, carbonate bounded, adsorbed species on Fe and Mn oxides and residual species (except silicates) of Ni, Cr and Cu were extracted into solution by using CaCl2, Na4P2O7, Na(2)EDTA, NH2OH-HCl and HNO3-H2O2, respectively. Mobile metal concentrations in fractions and total recoverable in soils were determined by using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Total recoverable Ni, Cr and Cu concentrations were in the range of 40-119, 45-126 and 23-72mgkg(-1), respectively. It was observed that total concentrations of metals in some of the samples were higher than the permitted values. The sum of the mobile percentages of metals was found to be lower than 50%. The Ni, Cr and Cu percentages for exchangeable species are in the ranges of 0.18-1.64, 0.03-0.59 and 0.42-2.53%, respectively.

Keser, Serhat; Celik, Sait; Turkoglu, Semra
Grape is one of the world's largest fruit crops, with an approximate annual production of 58 million metric tons, and it is well known that the grape skins, seeds and stems, waste products generated during wine and grape juice processing, are rich sources of polyphenols. It contains flavonoids, phenolic acids and stilbenes. In this study, we tried to determine antioxidant properties and phenolic contents of grape and grape products (fresh fruit, seed, dried fruit, molasses, pestil, vinegar) of ethanol and water extracts. Antioxidant properties of extracts were investigated by DPPH center dot, ABTS(center dot+), superoxide, H2O2 scavenging, reducing power, metal chelating activity and determination of total phenolic contents. The seed extracts revealed highest ABTS(center dot+), DPPH center dot, H2O2 scavenging and reducing power activities. Furthermore, these extracts showed higher total phenolic contents than other grape product extracts.
