Organoleptic and Chemical Changes during Storage of Sea Bass Marinades (Dicentrarchus labraxL., 1758)

    Kaya, Gulderen Kurt; Bastürk, Ozden

Chemical and organoleptic changes in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) preserved at 4C for 200 days have been investigated in this study. To prepare the fish fillets for study, they were put, at a ratio of 1:1.5 (fish:marinade brine), for marination into the brine containing 11% salt and 3.5% acetic acid. After the maturation process, samples were divided into two groups and packed in sealed plastic containers as plain and sauced and preserved for 200 days. At both groups packed as plain and sauced, TVB-N, TBA, TMA-N and peroxide number values were at acceptable limits during the storage of 200 days. It can be determined that both of the groups were approved in organoleptic terms; however, the sea bass marinades packed as plain were better approved. Our study shows that sea bass marinades packed as plain and sauced can be stored for 200 days without any quality problems. Practical Applications As the processed products are easy to store and bring a large margin of profit and always ready for the market, developing new products will contribute greatly to the aquaculture processing sector. Marinade processing technology is one of the cheapest technologies in aquaculture products processing and preservation methods, and it is very important in that it enriches the taste of fish, adds flavor and provides a longer shelf life. In the Mediterranean countries, sea bass ranks first in saltwater aquaculture and is among the most important aquaculture products. However; making use of the fish, especially which could not be sold or are undersold in the yield period, with the help of alternative processing methods can contribute to producers, the fisheries processing sector and the national economy. It was determined that sea bass marinades packed as plain and sauced can be stored for 200 days and can still retain their quality.

Comparision of Low-Cost and Eco-Friendly Adsorbent for Adsorption of Ni(II)

    Ince, Muharrem

In this study, samples of clay, tea waste, astragalus plant, chestnut shell, and egg shell were used as low-cost and eco-friendly adsorbents for the adsorption of Ni(ID from aqueous solutions. The effect of various parameters such as pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, and final volume on the adsorption capacities of these natural adsorbents were investigated by batch experiments. The adsorption capacity for Ni(II) was found to be 19.4 mg g(-1), 5.4 mg g(-1) 1.3 mg g(-1), 5.6 mg g(-1), 72.0 mg g(-1) for clay, tea waste, astragalus plant, chestnut shell, and egg shell, respectively. Egg shell has maximum adsorption capacity at pH 12, 45-minute contact time, and 0.5 g adsorbent mass. Nickel-free and nickel-loaded adsorbents were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, which evidenced the functional groups involved in nickel uptake. This work investigated the utilization of eco-friendly and low-cost adsorbents as an alternative natural adsorbent for Ni(II) ions.

Effect of Swirl Generator Inserted Into a Tube on Exergy Transfer: Decaying Flow

    Kurtbas, I.; Guelcimen, F.; Kiliçarslan, A.; Kaya, M.

This study experimentally investigates the effect of conical injector type swirl generator inserts on heat and exergy transfer in a uniform heat flux tube for turbulence regime. One hundred twenty watts of heat are applied by coiling a flexible silicone heater on the tube (copper pipe) with an inside diameter of 62mm and length of 1,200mm. The conical injector type swirl generator has a conical shape, which is similar to a funnel, with angle (alpha) of 30 degrees, 45 degrees, and 60 degrees. Circular holes are drilled on the conical injector type swirl generator as three different cross-sectional areas (A(h)). The total areas (A(t) =N.A(h)) of the holes on the conical injector type swirl generator equal each other. Because of this, the three different holes numbers (N) are produced. Flow directors having three different angles (beta=30 degrees, 60 degrees, and 90 degrees) to radial direction are attached to every one of the holes. This study is a typical example for decaying flow. Reynolds number (Re) was varied from 10,000 to 35,000, so the flow was considered as only a turbulent regime. All experiments were conducted with air accordingly; Prandtl number was approximately fixed at 0.71. The local and average heat transfer Nusselt number (Nu(h)) and exergy transfer Nusselt number (Nu(e)) are calculated and discussed in this article. It is found that the Nu(h) increases with an increase in Reynolds number, director angle (beta), and director diameter (d) but with a decrease in the conical injector type swirl generator angle (alpha). However, Nu(e) decreases depending on the same independent parameters.

Paleoseismology of the Ilipinar Segment (Karliova, Bingol), The North Anatolian Fault Zone

    Sançar, Taylan; Akyüz, H. Serdar

The last century earthquakes produced more than 1000 km surface rupture on the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ), which is one of the most active deformation belts in the World. Paleoseismic data from different parts of the NAFZ exposes critical information about the earthquake history of the fault zone. To research paleoseismicity of the Ilipinar Segment and relationship between the segment and last century earthquakes, two paleoseismologic trench studies performed on the Yoncalik basin, where positioned at eastern section of the Ilipinar segment. We identified two paleo-earthquakes, which correspond to BC 8500-6150 and BC 5960-4300 time intervals in the Yoncalik-1 trench. On the other hand the analyses of stratigraphy and structural features of the Yoncalik-2 trench similarly yield two events, from which the older happened before BC 6325 and the younger was between BC 6325-2105. Despite of the wide range of these intervals, both trench results are coincide within their uncertainty limits. We interpret that events in both trenches reflects the same surface ruptures. By the joint analysis of both trenches, we conclude that the most recent and penultimate events should have occurred between BC 5960-4300 and BC 8500-6325, respectively. The results from paleoseismology of the Ilipinar Segment, which constitute the easternmost part of the NAFZ, indicate that the seismic behaviour of the segment is not in accord with the general characteristic of the NAFZ. The reasons behind the disparity are considered to be related with complex fault geometry in the vicinity of Karliova triple junction and partitioning of accumulated strain on these structures.

Cryopreservation of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss spermatozoa: Effects of extender supplemented with different antioxidants on sperm motility, velocity and fertility

Kutluyer, Filiz; Kayim, Murathan; Ögretmen, Fatih; Büyükleblebici, Serhat; Tuncer, P. Barbaros

In present study, it was examined whether addition of different antioxidants to the cryopreservation extenders had an effect on semen post-thaw fertility and motility in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and also it was investigated the sperm characteristics post-thaw sperm characteristics and fertility. The collected semen was pooled to minimize individual variation. Each pooled ejaculate was split into 12 equal aliquots and diluted with base extenders supplemented with the antioxidants, and a base extender with no additives (control). The pooled semen samples diluted at the ratio of 1:10 by the extenders were subjected to cryopreservation. Antioxidants were separately added to the extenders (one per experimental group): catalase (250 U/l), superoxide dismutase (250 U/l), peroxidase (250 U/l), oxidized glutathione (1.5 mmol/l), reduced glutathione (1.5 mmol/l), L-methionine (1.5 mmol/l), uric acid (0.25 mmol/l), L-ascorbic acid (0.5 mmol/l), alpha-tocopherol (2.0 mmol/l), beta-carotene (0.5 mmol/l) and camitine (0.5 mmol/l). After dilution the semen was aspirated into 0.25 ml straws, the straws were placed on the tray, frozen for 10 min, and plunged into liquid nitrogen. Our results indicated that the post-thaw motility rate increased in extenders supplemented with uric acid, L-methionine, SOD, L-carnitine, alpha-tocopherol and L-reduced glutathione (p < 0.05). The motility duration of frozen thawed semen increased in extenders supplemented with uric acid, L-methionine, SOD, alpha-tocopherol and L-reduced glutathione (p < 0.05). Fertilization rate and hatching rate of frozen-thawed semen was not affected by the tested antioxidants. Consequently, the tested antioxidants affected the motility parameters and cryopreservation extenders could be supplement with antioxidants. This study suggested usage of antioxidants in the cryopreservation of rainbow trout. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

    Kizak, Volkan; Güsner, Yusuf

The morphometric and meristic characters of 2 F-2 hybrid striped bass (M. chrysops female x M. saxatilis male x M. chrysops female x M. saxatilis male) from the family Moronidae are described. Two specimens were caught from Kemer Dam Lake. The body of the F-2 hybrid striped bass was elongated, moderately compressed, and scaly. Dorsal surface and sides were silver and black to olive-gray, and the abdomen was white in color. Four or 5 longitudinal broken stripes ran above the lateral line to the caudal fin. The stripes were less visible behind the pectoral fins and below the lateral line. The bodies of the F-2 specimens were deeper than 1/4 the fork length. The 2 dorsal fins were separated entirely. The first dorsal fin had 8-9 spines, and the second dorsal fin had a spine and 13-14 soft rays. The caudal fin was slightly forked. The anal fin had 3 spines with 12-14 soft rays. One tooth patch was present on the anterior of the tongue. According to our results, the fish were F-2 hybrid striped bass offspring of F-1 hybrid striped bass, which can reproduce naturally in Turkey. Morphological criteria showed that the F-2 hybrids tended to resemble white bass (M. chrysops).

The probiotics are very important for aquaculture because of their role in enhancing the fish health status, improving disease resistance, growth performance, and body composition, reducing malformations, improving gut morphology and the overall microbial balance. The objective of the presently reported study was to investigate effects of kefir as a probiotic product on the digestive and hepatic enzyme activities, as well as glucose level of Coruh trout, Salmo coruhensis Turan, Kottelat et Engin, 2010. The experiment was performed with four treatments: control group (no kefir), D1, D2, and D3 (kefir-supplemented diet: 10, 20, and 40 g . kg(-1) fish body mass, respectively). The activity of: alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotranferase (AST), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), lipase, amylase-as well as the glucose levels were determined after 4 months. The results indicated that glucose levels (P < 0.05) and digestive enzymes (lipase and amylase) in the blood serum decreased in fish fed diets containing kefir (P > 0.05). On the contrary, the activity of liver enzymes (ALT, AST, and LDH) increased insignificantly (P > 0.05). In conclusion, digestive and liver enzyme activities were affected by quantitative changes in dietary kefir insignificantly but further research is needed to establish whether the liver and digestive enzyme physiology of Coruh trout can be affected by kefir-supplemented diets in a long-term trial.

Automatic recognition system of underlying causes of power quality disturbances based on S-Transform and Extreme Learning Machine

Eristi, Huseyin; Yildirim, Ozal; Eristi, Belkis; Demir, Yakup

In this paper, a new S-Transform and Extreme Learning Machine (ST-ELM)-based event recognition approach for the purpose of classifying power quality (PQ) event signals automatically has been proposed. In this approach, the distinctive features of the PQ event signals have been obtained with the S-Transform-based feature extraction. The feature vector obtained with feature extraction has been applied as input to the ELM classifier. Ten different classification procedures were determined within the framework of this study to assess the performance of the ELM classifier on PQ event data. Real PQ event data and synthetic PQ event data obtained from MATIAB/Simulink environment have been used in these procedures. Also, three different PQ event data sets, which are formed by adding noises of 20, 30 and 50 dB to the synthetic PQ event data respectively, have been used in order to assess the performance of the proposed approach on noisy conditions. According to the results of performance evaluations, the proposed ST-ELM-based PQ event recognition system has a very high performance of recognizing PQ event data. Besides, classification of noisy data showed that the proposed approach is robust at recognizing noisy data. The performance of the ST-ELM-based recognition system on PQ data shows that this approach has an effective recognition structure that can be used in real power systems. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Gulec, Azime Kucukgul; Erecevit, Pinar; Yuce, Ebru; Arslan, Ali; Bagci, Eyup; Kirbag, Sevda

The chemical composition of hydro distilled essential oil from Origanum acutidens (Hand. and Mazz.) Ietswaart was collected from Tunceli (Turkey) were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Essential oil and methanol extract of Origanum acutidens were tested against Yersinia ruckeri (ATCC 29473), Aeromonas hydrophila (ATCC 607920), Lactococcus garviae (ATCC 43921) Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 29213) fish pathogenic bacterial strains. The analysis of the essential oil of Origanum acutidens showed the presence of 6 components accounting for 93.8 % of the total amount. Calvacrol (61.8 %), p-cymene (15.5 %) and thymol (12.7 %) that possessed antimicrobial activity were found as the major component. The final concentrations of the methanol extract and the essential oil were determined by using disk diffusion assay. Mean inhibition zones of bacterial strains for Origanum acutidens essential oil varied from 28.0 +/- 1.2 and 36.7 +/- 0.7 mm. The inhibition zones of methanol extract (10 mu L and 20 mu L) of Origanum acutidens against bacterial strains were in the range 8.7 +/- 0.7 - 11.0 +/- 0.6 mm and 12.7 +/- 0.67 - 22.7 +/- 1.3 mm, respectively. Our results suggest that both the methanol extract and the essential oil of Origanum acutidens may be valuable as potential antibacterial agents against the major fish pathogens.
