Immunostimulating Effect of Levamisole on Spleen and Head-Kidney Leucocytes of Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Walbaum 1792)

Seker, Engin; Ispir, Unal; Dörücü, Mustafa

An in vitro cultivation method for spleen and head kidney organ section were used to investigate the effects of levamisole on the immune response. After 10 days of culture with 10 mu g/ml, 50 mu g/ml and 100 mu g/ml or no levamisole in the culture media, the non specific defense reaction were measured by glass-adherent NBT (nitroblue tetrazolium) positive cells activation and phagocytic activity. Elevation in phagocytic activity was found for 10 mu g/ml and 50 mu g/ml levels of levamisole (P < 0.001), but no differences were found at levels of phagocytic activity in between 100 mu g/ml levamisole groups and control groups (P > 0.05). In the spleen and head kidney leucocytes, increased response to levamisole was shawn for all doses in the glass-adherent NBT positive cells activation.

CONTROL OF FLOW AROUND A SQUARE PRISM BY USING SYNTHETIC JET

Akansu, Yahya Erkan; Firat, Erhan; Vit, T; Dancova, P

Control of the flow around a square prism by means of synthetic jet through a single slot located on middle of upper surface of the model has been investigated experimentally for Reynolds number of 8000. Synthetic jet was implemented by using a pneumatic piston-cylinder which was driven by means of an electrical motor. The frequency and stroke of the piston were changed to obtain various values of the flow control parameters. For various excitation frequency and momentum coefficients of the synthetic jet, the mean and fluctuating pressure distributions on the square prism were measured. The velocity measurements at the slot exit and at a specific coordinate were conducted by means of constant temperature anemometer (CTA). Vortex shedding frequencies obtained by the spectral analysis of both pressure-time and velocity-time history. At a value of synthetic jet excitation frequency, vortex pairs generated at slot were perturbed the shear layer that separated from the upper leading edge of square model and disturbs it. When the synthetic jet excitation frequency closes enough to the vortex shedding frequency, the lock-in of vortex shedding frequency onto the exciting frequency was occurred. On the other hand, increasing excitation frequency of the synthetic jet causes a pressure recovery on the surface of the prism within the wake region. The efficiency of the synthetic jet is classified depending on change of the drag coefficient and vortex shedding frequency.

Variation in Advertisement Call Properties of the Japanese Quail

    Sezer, M.; Tekelioglu, O.

The aim of this study was to investigate the amount variation in four spectral and six temporal properties of advertisement calls between and within-male Japanese quail and to establish the effect of age of sexual maturation to these properties. The first, second, third syllables and damping parts were 68.2, 74.3, 501.1 and 95.9 ms long, on average, and had peak frequencies of 1719.9, 1989.9, 2203.2 and 2352.7 Hz, respectively. There was high between individual variations in all call traits. In relation to within-male variation, there were high medians and low ranges for spectral properties while low medians and high ranges for temporal properties. Moderate positive correlations between syllable lengths and age of sexual maturation, low negative correlations between interval lengths and age of sexual maturation were observed. Repeatability of the advertisement call characteristics were hid, but estimates for spectral properties were slightly lower (0.66-0.82) than that for temporal properties (0.89-0.96). These results suggest that temporal call parameters have the potential to be used in individual identity and these traits might carry information used by females in mate choice. Spectral properties could be recognized as stable call properties that may be used in efficient transmission or species recognition.

Biochemical Flavour Parameters of Milk in Early Lactation

    Bayril, T.; Cimen, M.; Tekelioglu, O.

This research was aimed to investigate the biochemical flavour-parameters of milk by machine milking in early lactation period. In the experiment, milk samples from 50 Holstein cows were used. Cows were fed high-energy concentrate diet (140 g crude protein and 10.3 metabolizable energy MJ/d). The data was collected from DIMES Company during July month. The milk fat rates were lower (p < 0.05) for cows in first and second weeks than last week. Cows were shown to be more sensitive to milk fat syndrome for first and second weeks. A decrease in milk fat percentage for summer period (2.3-2.6 %) can directly lead to taste loss. There were statistically no significant differences between the weeks for milk acidity (sH and pH) values during July. The milk acidity values (sH and pH) during July were tolerable for desired taste and favourable for consumer preference.

    Cimen, M.; Yildirim, N.; Dikici, A.; Kaplan, O.; Yildirim, N. Cikcikoglu

CIMEN, M., N. YILDIRIM, A. DIKICI, O. KAPLAN and N. CIKCIKOGLU YILDIRIM, 2010. Seasonal variations of biochemical taste parameters in milks from conventional and environment-friendly organic farming. Bulg. J. Agric. Sci., 16: 728-732 The aim of this study is to research the milk biochemical taste components in organic (ORG) and conventional (CON) systems for different season. In study, all data were investigated for all season of 2004. Milk fat levels in both groups for summer season were lower than any other season. Average milk fat values in ORG treatment were lower than the values of CON treatment in all season except winter period. Therefore, a decrease in fat percentage for organic milk can directly lead to taste loss. Similarly, total solid rates in conventional milks in spring period were more favorable than rates in organic milk for desired taste. However, the pH value in organic milk was more acceptable for required flavor in summer season.

Agar-Plate Screening for Acid Dyes Decolourization by Three Strains of Pleurotus eryngii Isolated from Tunceli, Elazig and Hakkari Province of Turkey

    Yildirim, N.; Yildiz, A.; Aydin, H.

Many synthetic dyes present in industrial wastewaters are resistant to degradation by conventional treatments. In this study, the ability to decolourize two textile dyes by Pleurotus eryngii strains collected from geographically different habitats of Turkey was evaluated on agar plates For all strains, growth and decolourization halos were determined on malt extract agar plates containing 0 1 and 0.2 g/L of acid red 183 or acid green 25. Each P eryngii strain showed certain decolourization capacities and was able to decolourize both acid red 183 and acid green 25 on the malt extract agar plates, but not to the same extent Both dyes at all concentrations were found to be toxic for P eryngii growth The presence of the dyes in plates reduced the mycelial growth of all strains in comparison with the control culture growing in the medium without dyes. A positive correlation was found between the mycelial growth rate and the decolourization ability

Biochemical Taste Parameters in Meat and Sea Products

    Kayim, M.; Cimen, M.; Can, E.; Kizak, V.

Flavour of meat or sea products is generally thought to consist of the volatile components sense in the nose, both through the nostrils and from inside the mouth. Taste results from the combination of basic flavors (sweet, sour, bitter, salt and umami). The flavors and aromas associated with meat and sea foods are generally those that develop during heating and cooking. Animal products such as meat and sea foods have very complex composition and definition of their quality are very complicated.

Milk Components from Machine Milking Cows in Winter and Spring Periods

    Tekelioglu, O.; Cimen, M.; Soylu, D.; Soylu, I.

The aim of this study is to research the biochemical components in milks of machine milked cows for spring and winter season in different regions of Turkey. In study, all data were investigated for winter (December, January and February) and spring (March, April and May) periods in 2006. The milk fat levels were the highest in the winter season in Kayseri, Malya, Sahilkoy, Turhal and Pazar regions. The milk total solid levels were the lowest in the spring season for Kayseri Province. The milk sH values were the lower in the spring than winter season in Malya region. Whereas, there were no significant differences among regions for pH values in different periods. Low fat levels in total milk for spring period can cause to economical loss since the milk price depends on milk fat levels. Further studies are needed to investigate on milk components in different climatic conditions.

The Biochemical Parameters Having Economic Importance in Sheep and Fish Meats

    Kayim, M.

In this study, 10 meat samples from fish (Trachurus trachurus L. 1758) and sheep (Akkaraman) were used. In the experiment, the used fish meat was a total body meat. However, the sheep longissimus muscle (lean) from 6th rib cut was sampled for determination of chemical components. The concentrations of total fat were lower (p < 0.01) for fish than sheep. However, the concentrations of pH were also lower (p < 0.05) for sheep material. There were no effects of animal species on the moisture concentrations. The rates of ash were lower (p < 0.01) for sheep group. The pH concentrations close to neutral in meat from fish may be advantage for eating quality. However, this pH level is disadvantage for shelf life of product. However, the high amounts of fat in the sheep meats may have a negative effect upon consumer's preference and health.
