Removal of Reactive Blue 4 Dye from Aqueous Solution with Magnetic Fe3O4@Nd/Alg Beads

    Karaaslan Ayhan, Nagihan; Seker, Seda

In this study, magnetic iron oxide@neodymium/alginate (Fe3O4@Nd/Alg) beads were prepared by ionic crosslinking with neodymium (Nd) ions, then subjected to heat treatment, and for the first time, effective removal of Reactive Blue 4 (RB 4) dye from aqueous solution was achieved with these beads. For this purpose, ideal adsorption conditions that significantly affect the removal of this dye were determined. The ideal adsorption conditions were determined as pH:5, contact time (t):60 min, amount of magnetic Fe3O4@Nd/Alg bead (m):10 mg, initial RB 4 dye concentration (C0):25 mg/L, temperature (T): 25 °C. Adsorption isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic studies were carried out under the ideal adsorption conditions. The adsorption data was found to completely follow Langmuir model for RB 4 dye and the maximum adsorption capacity of RB 4 was found to be 263.16 mg/g. The adsorption kinetic data was found to be compatible with pseudo-second order and adsorption processes were explained by intraparticle diffusion. In adsorption thermodynamics studies, it has been determined that the nature of the adsorption reaction is spontaneous, endothermic and with increasing randomness. Furthermore, reuse studies of magnetic Fe3O4@Nd/Alg beads were carried out and it was determined that these beads could be used successfully up to 10 adsorption/desorption cycles.

Cetiz, Mehmet Veysi; Zengin, Gokhan; Leyva-Jiménez, Francisco Javier; Fernández-Ochoa, Álvaro; de la Luz Cádiz-Gurrea, Maria; Custódio, Luísa; Rodrigues, Maria João; Pereira, Catarina G.; Lazarova, Irina; Balos, Mehmet Maruf

Members of the Ajuga genus are of significant interest due to their traditional applications in various countries, and have therefore been the subject of phytochemical research investigating their natural bioactive compounds. The aim of this study was to determine the chemical composition and biological activities of various Ajuga vestita extracts (ethyl acetate, ethanol, ethanol/water and water). The biological effects assessed included antioxidant, enzyme inhibition and cytotoxic activities. The extracts were chemically profiled using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography – electrospray ionization – quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS), which identified 121 compounds, including iridoids, flavonoids, and phenolic acids. The ethanol/water extract exhibited superior radical scavenging activity (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH): 43.13 mg Trolox equivalent (TE)/g; 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS): 45.37 mg TE/g) and reducing power (cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC): 103.43 mg TE/g; ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP): 45.29 mg TE/g). Regarding enzyme inhibition, the ethanol extract exhibited the greatest inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), glucosidase, and tyrosinase, whereas the ethyl acetate extract was most effective against amylase. Regarding cytotoxicity, the ethyl acetate extract exhibited the strongest effect, significantly reducing cell viability in all cell lines and having a particularly strong impact on murine bone marrow stromal (S17) cells, with viability at 30.8 ± 2.7% at a concentration of 100 µg/mL. By contrast, the aqueous extract exhibited low cytotoxicity, maintaining high cell viability (over 94% at 50 µg/mL and over 74% at 100 µg/mL). Additionally, network pharmacology, molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations were employed to investigate the multi-target mechanisms and binding stability of A. vestita phytochemicals. These findings provide new, detailed insights into A. vestita and suggest its potential as a raw material for developing health-promoting nutraceutical and pharmaceutical products.

Postural control impairment in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): The role of respiratory muscle weakness and spinal curvature

Topcuoğlu, Ceyhun; Ozel, Alp; Tutun Yumin, Eylem; Sertel, Meral; Tug, Tuncer

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with respiratory muscle dysfunction, postural alterations and balance impairment. However, the impact of respiratory muscle weakness on postural control and its relationship with spinal curvature and mobility remain insufficiently clarified. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to compare postural control in individuals with COPD with and without respiratory muscle weakness; to examine the relationship among spinal curvature, spinal mobility, postural control and respiratory muscle strength; and to determine the effect of respiratory muscle strength on postural control. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 41 clinically stable individuals with COPD aged 40–75 years. Respiratory muscle strength was assessed using a mouth pressure measurement device. Postural control and balance were evaluated with the Biodex Balance System and functional tests. Higher stability index values indicate greater postural sway and poorer balance performance, whereas lower values reflect better postural stability. Spinal curvature and mobility were assessed using the Spinal Mouse®. RESULTS: Individuals with respiratory muscle weakness showed significantly higher overall, anterior–posterior and medial–lateral stability indices, as well as worse eyes-open and eyes-closed firm-surface indices compared to those without weakness (p < 0.05). In participants with severe and very severe COPD, thoracic kyphosis angle was significantly associated with MIP, MIP% and multiple balance indices under different surface and visual conditions (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Respiratory muscle weakness is associated with impaired postural control and balance performance in individuals with COPD, and thoracic spinal curvature appears to be linked to both respiratory muscle strength and balance outcomes.

The Efficacy of Structured Exercise Program Versus Aerobic Exercise in Tension-Type Headache: A Randomised Clinical Trial

    Ataş, Kübra; Mutlu, Ebru Kaya

Background: Despite the widespread use of exercise in managing tension-type headache, there remains a lack of research on the effectiveness of combined structured exercise programs. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a structured exercise program versus aerobic exercise of equal duration on tension-type headache (TTH). Methods: Fifty-four female participants aged between 18 and 55 years were randomised to receive a 12-week exercise program, conducted twice a week for 45 min per session. The Structured Exercise Group (SEG) participated in a combination of aerobic, strengthening, and stretching exercises, whereas the Aerobic Exercise Group (AEG) performed only aerobic exercises. The primary outcome measure was the Headache Impact Test (HIT-6), a quality-of-life questionnaire. Secondary outcome measures included headache intensity, disability level, pressure pain threshold, proprioception, muscle strength, cervical posture, exercise capacity, anxiety, and depression. Results: Both groups showed statistically significant improvements in quality of life, pain intensity, disability, anxiety, depression, exercise capacity, pressure pain threshold, and proprioception (p < 0.05). Between-group comparisons revealed that the SEG demonstrated significantly greater improvements in quality of life, pressure pain threshold, proprioception, muscle strength, and posture (p < 0.05), whereas the AEG showed superior gains in exercise capacity (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Both exercise programs appear similarly effective for self-reported outcomes. Based on clinical measurement results, we recommend incorporating strengthening and stretching exercises into the aerobic exercise program and extending the duration to 12 weeks for additional benefits. Significance Statement: This study highlights the clinical value of supervised, physiotherapist-led exercise and the integration of personalised, multi-component strategies in managing tension-type headache. While both structured and aerobic programs improved pain, activity, and participation, the structured approach provided additional benefits in pressure pain threshold, proprioception, muscle strength, and posture. Tailoring interventions to individual clinical needs and extending the duration beyond 8 weeks may further enhance outcomes.

Current Trends and Future Perspectives for Post-Disaster Assembly Areas

    Polat, Elifcan Göçmen; Polat, Erkan

Disasters bring about significant material damage and social disruptions, affecting entire communities or specific groups. These events can halt daily life and human activities, often exceeding the handling capacity of the affected population. For effective disaster management, all stages-including prevention, mitigation, preparation, response, and recovery must be spatially planned. The identification of post-disaster assembly areas is critically important for minimizing loss of life and property. This study examines theoretical and practical research on assembly areas from the literature. In determining suitable assembly areas, factors such as population density, accessibility, proximity to hazard sources, land type, and access to essential services and methods as Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) provide valuable framework for addressing assembly area selection challenges. Findings from the literature indicate that the assembly areas should be reassessed in the context of evolving needs and regulatory requirements.

The contamination of aquatic ecosystems by heavy metals has been identified as a significant environmental hazard for aquatic animal species, including fish. The objective of this study was to investigate the tolerance of Vagococcus salmoninarum bacteria to copper and the impact of copper exposure on antibiotic susceptibility. The bacterial isolates, comprising six strains, were obtained from rainbow trout reared in cage culture at Kılavuzlu Dam Lake. The initial assessment of antibiotic susceptibility was conducted using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method, which was subsequently validated through the determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The broth microdilution method was employed, with the bacterial isolates exposed to concentrations of copper sulphate ranging from 0.1 to 1 mM. The resistance to multiple antibiotics was altered to be significantly altered following exposure to copper sulphate. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of copper was observed to be 0.4 mM against V. salmoninarum. It was noted that V. salmoninarum, which has been exposed to copper in its natural environment, has developed the capacity to withstand stress and has undergone a change in its physiological status.

Determination of Oxidative Stress Responses in Dreissena polymorpha Exposed to Rare Earth Elements (Terbium, Lanthanum, Gadolinium and Praseodymium) with Temperature

    Serdar, Osman; Aydın, Ayşe Nur

The continuous development of industry pushes people to search for new resources, and for this reason, the usage areas of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) are increasing day by day. Increasing concentrations of REEs, as a result of increased use, create pollution in the environment and harm living organisms. This pollution interacts with increasing temperature and causes more negative synergistic effects of the pollutant in the environment and in the living body. In this study, sublethal concentration values were determined by literature review and the concentration value was determined as 125 mg/L. In the present study tt was aimed to investigate some oxidative stress and antioxidant responses of Terbium, Lanthanum, Gadolinium and Praseodymium REEs in Dreissena polymorpha at 125 mg/L concentration at 3 different temperatures (16, 18, 20 0C) with biomarkers. For this purpose, 24 and 96 hour experimental trial design was created and 7 D. polymorpha were used in each trial group, and the application experiments were carried out with 3 replications. The samples at the end of the experimental phase were stored at -80 degrees Celsius until they were analyzed. In this study, Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) enzyme activities and glutathione (GSH) and Thiobarbituric acid (TBARS) level biomarker responses were determined by ELISA test microplate reader. CAYMAN brand SOD (Catalog No 706002), CAT Catalog No 707002) and GPx (Catalog No 703102), GSH (Catalog No 703002) and TBARS (Catalog No 10009055) were used in the study. SPSS 24.0 package program one-way ANOVA (Duncan 0.05) was used for the evaluation of biochemical analyzes. According to the study data, statistically significant decreases were observed in SOD and CAT activities in the oxidative stress responses of REEs on D. Polymorpha with increasing temperature, while there was no significant change in GPx activities. It was determined that there were increases in TBARS levels and decreases in GSH levels. It is thought that the temperature factor, application concentration and application time are effective in the formation of these changes. It can be said that temperature change and pollutants cause oxidative stress in organisms and cause cell damage.

Milk Production Curves Obtained from Cows Raised in Türkiye According to Years and Determination of Production Differences with the Help of Cluster Analysis and Friedman Test

    Çimen, Murat; Güven, Alper

In the study, cluster analysis and Friedman tests were used to create curves for cow milk yields in Türkiye between 2010-2023 and to determine yield differences. For this purpose, milk yield records obtained from TUIK for the years in question were used. Since data before 2010 could not be accessed, 2010 was taken as the starting date. When the figures obtained in the study are examined, it is striking that the years generally show similar curves. These curves generally show a decrease from January to February, then an increase until May. Milk yield values, which reach their peak in May, decrease again until November. After this month, a new increase is noted in December. The months showing maximum and minimum values in the graphs of 2016 and 2017 are different. Therefore, different curves were obtained for these years compared to other years. When the curves of all years, cluster analysis and Friedman test results are examined in general, it can be said that the highest production was determined in May and the lowest production in November. The reason for these differences should be investigated for the years 2016 and 2017, when different curve results were obtained. The findings of this study are important in terms of providing preliminary information for those who will conduct model studies on milk production in our country. In addition to the evaluation of curve graphs, it has been seen from the research findings that different statistical techniques such as cluster analysis and Friedman test give effective results in this type of data. Both cluster analysis and Friedman test methods are test methods that can be used safely in new studies where curve graphs will be made.

Effects of molar ratio, temperature and water content on acidity and viscosity of deep eutectic solvent formed from Choline Chloride-Ethylene Glycerol

    Aydın, Çağlar Mert

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) become preferred solvents owing to unique features and promising environmentally friendly nature they have. Evaluation their properties is essential in order to use them effectively. Even though DESs are a good alternative to classic solvents, their viscosity is high, limiting their usage in industrial applications. However, this can be overcome by adding cosolvent or varying application conditions. In this study, the effect of temperature ranging from 200C to 600C (293.15- 333.15 K), molar ratio (1:1 to 1:9) and cosolvent addition (water) on acidity and viscosity of DES were investigated. Overall, as a result of this study, operation conditions had a significant effect on acidity and viscosity of DESs. Acidity and viscosity of DESs were on decrease as molar ratio increased, and the increase in temperature negatively affected viscosity of DESs. Dynamic viscosity of DESs were temperature dependence, following Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann (VFT) equality. Cosolvent addition decreased viscosity of DESs. Addition of water higher than 25% did not have a significant effect on viscosity. In addition, water addition decreased acidity of DES up to 1:5 molar ratio, but no significant effect regardless of the amount of water addition on the acidity was determined. These results provide a new perceptive about the mechanism of DES designed for usage in food applications.

Deep learning: evolution, innovations, and applications in the last decade

Yıldırım, Özal; Günay, Mıhrıban; Demir, Yakup

Deep learning has become a popular method in the last ten years with its superior performance in many fields, especially in health. Although it is a sub-branch of machine learning, one of the most important reasons for researchers to use this method is that it automates the difficult processes of feature extraction stages in traditional machine learning methods. With the advancement of technology every year, it has become easier to create large data sets or to access large data sets that have been used before on the web. Researchers who want to work on large data sets use deep learning methods effectively because of their advantages instead of using traditional machine learning methods. The foundations of deep learning were laid with the deep belief networks method, which was first developed in 2006. Later, with the significant success of the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) method developed in 2012 in image classification, deep learning methods have been used in many applications in other disciplines. The success of the deep reinforcement learning algorithm that defeated Alpha Go champion Lee Sedol in 2016, the remarkable success of the contentious generating networks in creating their own unique images, the success of the Siamese networks with the ability to learn from little data in signature verification and facial recognition systems, the success of the artificial intelligence chat bot ChatGPT, which was launched in the last months of 2022, attracted attention in a short time, and the ability of DALL-E, a similar language model, to create images from texts, shows that deep learning is in constant innovation and development. This study aims to give an idea to researchers who will work in this field in the future by talking about the basic concepts of deep learning and the innovative and popular approaches used.

Investigation of the Benefits of the Floating Solar Power Plant to be Established on Keban Dam Lake using Penman, Linacre and Artificial Neural Networks Methods

Esen, Hikmet; Kurt, Savaş; Toka, UnalT Unal

In this study, it will be calculated how much water evaporation will be prevented if a Floating Solar Power Plant (FSPP) is installed on a certain part of the Keban Dam lake in Elazığ (38.41˚N, 39.14˚E), Türkiye by using the Penman and Linacre methods and the Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) method, which are widely used in evaporation calculation. Thus, it will be calculated how much energy can be produced with this saved water. Keban Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP), examined in this study, is Türkiye's 3rd largest hydroelectric power plant with an installed power of 1.330 MWe. It is the fourth largest lake in Türkiye and the second largest dam lake after the Atatürk Dam. Keban Dam meets the electrical energy needs of 1.750.733 people in their daily lives with an average electricity production of 5.794.927,279 kWh. It has been calculated that thanks to a floating photovoltaic power plant that will cover 10% of the dam lake, a total of 31.305.282 m3 of water in normal water code will be prevented from evaporating annually, and thanks to this water, energy benefit will be provided with the power plant with an installed power of 6.624,84 MWe. In addition, it has been analyzed that 11.297.018 kWh of electricity can be produced from the dam turbines with the water prevented from evaporating thanks to FSPP. Approximately 72.39 MWe energy is needed for the Ağın, Pertek, Serince, Palu-Kovancılar, Uluova, Kuzova irrigation projects around the Keban Dam lake. It has been determined that the amount of water and energy needed for irrigation of these plains can be obtained thanks to FSPP.

The potential effects of the Zangezur Corridor on Türkiye’s foreign trade

    Ates, Erdem

The Zangezur corridor connects Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. An exclave of Azerbaijan. After the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War, the obstacles to opening the Zangezur corridor were solved through the ceasefire agreement. Implementing the Zangezur corridor will shorten the route used nowadays by the Baku—Tiflis—Kars railway by almost 150 km. For this reason, it is thought that this corridor would decrease transportation costs and increase trade volumes. Türkiye, which will have direct land contact with Turkic countries, is the country of one of the most prominent effects of the opening of the Zangezur corridor. The main objective of this study is to determine the effect of Türkiye’s trade volumes on the opening of the Zangezur corridor. To investigate this, the study constructs a built-in structural gravity model with a new economic geography perspective covering 182 countries from 2007 to 2023. Then, the coefficient values obtained from the model are used to determine the possible change in Türkiye's trade with nine Asian countries that are expected to use this corridor directly. According to the results, it is expected that Türkiye’s top three export-enlarging countries, respectively, are Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan, which will be import-enlarging Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Uzbekistan.

The original scale comprises 35 items across five factors. To explore the factor structure in the Turkish context, exploratory factor analysis was conducted with data from 307 internet users. The original 5-factor structure was reduced to four factors due to the analysis. It was determined that all factors explained 68.4% of the variance. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted with 300 participants to test the suitability of the resulting 4-factor structure for Turkish culture. Confirmatory factor analysis results supported the 4-factor structure, and the fit indices indicated acceptable, good, and excellent model fit. Convergent and discriminant validity analyses were also conducted to assess construct validity, and the results were found to be within acceptable ranges. Based on the findings, the 20-item version of the scale was confirmed to be valid and reliable for use within the Turkish context.
