Does Social Climate in the Hospital Affect Nurses' Loneliness?

    Sezgin, Eray Ekin

Loneliness is a widespread emotion across the world and is something that many people experience at some point in their lives. Loneliness in the workplace is often caused by employees' inability to form strong bonds with their coworkers or managers. Loneliness can both reduce individual performance and negatively affect the overall workplace atmosphere. In particular, an important element of understanding employees' workplace loneliness is to consider the interaction between employees and their environment, especially the social systems in which these employees are embedded. In recent years, it has been increasingly studied by researchers and practitioners as it has serious negative effects at both individual and organizational levels. This study is based on a comprehensive framework that includes the social exchange approach, the human relations approach and the need to belong approach in order to comprehend the phenomenon of workplace loneliness and the factors affecting this phenomenon. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted on 194 nurses selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and data analysis was carried out using the original SPSS-26 package program. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to test the hypotheses. The research data were collected with the “Social Climate Scale” and “Workplace Loneliness Scale”. As a result of the study, it was found that nurses' perception of social climate was above average and workplace loneliness level was below average. In addition, in the current study, it was determined that social climate has a significant negative effect on workplace loneliness. As a result of the correlation analysis, it was determined that there was a negative and significant relationship between nurses' perceptions of in-group communication and professional cooperation and their workplace loneliness levels. This study makes a unique and significant contribution to the organizational behavior literature by revealing the link between interpersonal harmony, organizational support, in-group communication, work ethics, professional cooperation and non-work relationships and workplace loneliness.

Assessing Environmental Policy Impact through the Ecological Footprint: The Case of Türkiye

    Sarı, Sacit

This study investigates the long-term effectiveness of environmental policies in Türkiye by examining the stochastic properties of the ecological footprint (EF) and its six subcomponents, carbon footprint, cropland footprint, grazing land footprint, forest products footprint, fishing grounds footprint, and built-up land footprint over the period 1961–2022. Annual per capita data obtained from the Global Footprint Network are analyzed using two-unit root testing methodologies: the conventional Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test and the more robust RALS-LM unit root test, which accounts for structural breaks and non-normal error distributions. The findings reveal that both the EF and its largest component, the CF, are stationary, suggesting that past environmental policy interventions have yielded transitory effects. Only the CRF and FGF exhibit nonstationarity, indicating that agricultural and fisheries-related policies may have induced permanent shifts in environmental outcomes. Overall, the results suggest that environmental policies in Türkiye to date have not led to long-term and permanent improvements in the ecological footprint indicator. Therefore, it is concluded that policy design should be more comprehensive, consistent, and structurally transformative to achieve environmental sustainability.

Molecular Insight on Phylogeny and Systematics of the Narrowly Endemic Centaurea bingoelensis (Asteraceae)

Yazdıç, Ferit Can; Açar, Mıkaıl; Cakilcioglu, Ugur; Tasar, Neslihan; Çelik, İbrahim Seyfettin

Centaurea L. is a genus that is systematically discussed and whose taxonomic issues need to be clarified in the light of molecular techniques developed in recent years. This study aims to contribute taxonomically in molecular terms by studying the morphological and phylogenetic relationships of Centaurea bingoelensis. This limited, endemic species grows naturally in the Bingöl province of Türkiye. A phylogenetic analysis based on the molecular marker ITS, which is the most preferred in evolutionary studies and found in nuclear DNA, has been proposed as a molecular marker of C. bingoelensis , an endemic plant in Türkiye, and has not yet been molecularly identified. For this purpose, PCR amplification of the fragment mentioned above was performed, followed by direct sequencing, analysis of nucleotide variation, and phylogenetic analysis with different species. The Centaurea species identified so far have been shown to have three main distinct major clades and the specific phylogenetic methods used (NJ, ML, MP) and the ITS nucleotide sequences analyzed revealed a close phylogenetic relationship between C. bingoelensis and C. spectabilis. For a more accurate phylogenetic classification of this species within the Asteraceae family, their close relationships were probed using similar sequences from the GenBank Database. Phylogenetic analysis of C. bingoelensis specimens using ITS sequences reveals their position in the Asteraceae family and molecular support for these specimens being new species as proposed. Although morphologically similar to C. fenzlii and C. obtusifolia, the remarkable point of our study is that C. bingoelensis is phylogenetically closer to C. spectabilis. This work has exciting implications for understanding the evolution and diversification of the genus Centaurea. In addition, the results of this study show that the samples identified as Centaurea species in Türkiye are still not entirely determined genetically.

Utku, Anıl; Kutlu, Banu; Utku, Esen Damla Balo

Water quality plays a vital role in public health, environmental sustainability and ecosystem balance. However, industrialization, urbanization, and agricultural activities cause water pollution to increase, threatening both human health and aquatic ecosystems. Traditional water quality monitoring methods are usually time-consuming, costly, and require manual intervention. Therefore, developing automatic, data-driven, and high-accuracy prediction models is crucial for sustainable water management. This study created a hybrid ConvLSTM model to increase prediction accuracy. The created model was comparatively analyzed with RF, SVR, XGBoost, MLP, CNN, and LSTM. The dataset used includes historical measurement values of chemical pollutants. Input data includes geographical coordinates of sample points, chemical parameter type, and compliance with regulatory standards. Experimental results show that ConvLSTM provides the lowest prediction errors by learning spatial and temporal dependencies and reaches the highest accuracy rate with 0.994 R2 compared to other models.

Comparison of Secondary Models for Modelling the Growth of Salmonella in Leafy Greens

    Omaç, Basrı

This study evaluated the performance of three mathematical models—the Ratkowsky square-root, Arrhenius-type, and Cardinal models—in describing the temperature-dependent growth of Salmonella in leafy greens. Therefore, data on the maximum growth rate (μmax) of Salmonella enterica in leafy greens under different temperature conditions were collected from peer-reviewed scientific publications available in databases. The Integrated Pathogen Modeling Program (IPMP) software was then used for modelling and analysis. The results indicated that the sub-optimal Ratkowsky model most accurately captured growth rates below the organism’s optimum temperature, with parameters a=0.02 and Tmin=7.3°C estimated with high precision. In contrast, the model’s supra-optimal parameters were weakly constrained due to limited high-temperature data. Despite achieving strong explanatory power (R2=0.90), the Arrhenius-type and Cardinal models had significant parameter uncertainty over the whole temperature range, which limited their usefulness. These findings support the use of simpler, empirically grounded models in predictive microbiology when thermal data are incomplete. Future research should prioritize gathering data at higher temperatures to better characterize growth decline in the supra-optimal range.

Determination of Suitable Drying Model and Energy Efficiency of Mixed Culture Microalgal Biomass by Infrared Drying

    Yoğurtçu, Hakan; Kalender, Mehmet

In this study, a modeling approach using infrared (IR) drying data of mixed-culture algae, an energy efficiency analysis of the drying process, and some surface proper-ties of the dried product were presented. New model equations derived from com-monly known drying models were applied to experimental data obtained from drying microalgal biomass at various temperatures ranging from 5 to 105 °C. Among these, the DM13 equation, based on the Newton model, best represented the drying behav-ior. The specific moisture extraction rate (SMER) and moisture extraction rate (MER) increased with higher drying temperatures, while, as expected, the specific energy consumption (SEC) decreased. According to the energy efficiency analysis, the IR drying method can be considered suitable for drying microalgal biomass. FT-IR re-sults indicated characteristic green algae peaks attributed to components such as carbohydrates, proteins, and cellulose–fatty acids. Peaks at 2900 cm⁻¹ and 3386 cm⁻¹ decreased with increasing drying temperature and disappeared at 105 °C. SEM imag-es showed that microalgal cells experienced shrinkage at 60 °C. Furthermore, while dried microalgal biomass exhibited a porous structure at 50 °C and 60 °C, pores were almost absent at 70 °C and 105 °C.

Three-Dimensional (3D) Airport Runway Design Model for Tunceli Province

    Cemalgil, Selim; Kaçmaz, Muhammed Nur

This research article addresses the design of an airport runway for the province of Tunceli, which is characterized by a geographically challenging topography. The study highlights the inadequacies of traditional two-dimensional (2D) analyses in complex terrains and proposes a decision support approach based on three-dimensional (3D) modelling. In this context, two alternative sites were evaluated. The first site, assessed using conventional 2D methods, was found unsuitable due to excessive natural slope and significant obstacle penetrations. The second site, analyzed through a 3D environment using Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data in Blender, enabled the volumetric modelling of Obstacle Limitation Surfaces (OLS) and provided a more realistic representation of terrain-obstacle interactions. In this study, the Boeing 737-800 classified under ICAO Code 4C and widely used in Türkiye’s domestic flights, was selected as the reference aircraft for the airport runway design. Considering site-specific altitude and temperature conditions, the required runway length was calculated as 3200 m. The 3D analyses indicated full compliance with approach, takeoff-climb and inner horizontal surface criteria for the north-south orientation. Overall, the results demonstrate that 3D data-driven methods offer a more reliable and precise framework for airport planning in mountainous regions compared with traditional 2D approaches.

Private Pain, Public Ruin: Corporeal Allegories of South African Apartheid in Age of Iron

    Hotaman, İncihan

    J. M. Coetzee’s Age of Iron presents a profound exploration of the interplay between private experience and public reality within apartheid-era South Africa. This paper argues that the novel situates Mrs. Elizabeth Curren’s personal suffering, her terminal illness, and her moral awakening as a microcosm of the broader social, political, and ethical collapse of the nation. Through the epistolary form, Coetzee provides a lens into Mrs. Curren’s growing awareness of the violent oppression endured by Black South Africans, highlighting the intersections of complicity, guilt, and the consequences of historical injustice. The novel’s meticulous depiction of her deteriorating body, her decaying home, and her limited interactions with figures such as Florence serves as an allegorical reflection of South Africa’s fragmented society and failing apartheid state. Mrs. Curren’s cancer functions as both a personal and cultural symbol, embodying the cumulative effects of shame and moral repression, while her experiences in the township of Guguletu reveal the stark contrast between mediated images of reality and lived oppression. By analyzing the novel’s layering of personal illness, ethical reflection, and socio-political critique, this paper demonstrates how Coetzee transforms large-scale historical violence into intimate, embodied experience. Ultimately, Age of Iron illuminates the inextricable connection between individual conscience and collective responsibility, illustrating how witnessing oppression entails both suffering and moral reckoning. The novel’s conclusion, which signals the emergence of a new identity rather than simply marking death, underscores the potential for ethical and personal renewal even amidst systemic collapse.

Metaphorical Perceptions of University Students Regarding the Concept of "Academic"

    Karatay, Mahmut

This study aims to reveal university students' perceptions of the concept of "academician" through the metaphors they produce. The study was conducted with 270 undergraduate students studying at a state university. Employing a phenomenological design within qualitative research methods, this study integrates content analysis with thematic network analysis to analyze students' metaphorical perceptions of academicians, ensuring alignment between methodology and analytical techniques. The findings indicate that academicians are perceived as sources of knowledge and guides, but also as authoritarian, biased, and sometimes oppressive figures. The metaphorical analysis categorized academicians into seven groups: sources of knowledge and guides, disciplined and hardworking, enabling development and change, emotional and social, injustice and ego, negative perceptions, and ambiguity and contradiction. Gender differences show that females focus more on fairness and guidance, while males emphasize authority and oppression. By class, first- and second-year students view academicians as knowledge sources, whereas third- and fourth-year students perceive more injustice and stress. Overall, negative metaphors predominate (55%), indicating academicians are seen as significant sources of stress.

Neo-orientalism in reverse: the voice of the “other” in mohsin hamid’s the reluctant fundamentalist

    Hotaman, İncihan

This article offers a postcolonial and narratological analysis of Mohsin Hamid’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist, arguing that the novel actively reverses Neo-Orientalist discourse through its narrative structure and use of focalization. Situating the text within post-9/11 cultural and political contexts, the study examines how dominant Western media and literary narratives have constructed Muslim identity through binaries of threat, irrationality, and otherness. Against this background, the article demonstrates how Hamid reclaims narrative authority by centering a Muslim protagonist who speaks in his own voice and controls the terms of representation. Drawing on postcolonial theory and narratology, particularly Gérard Genette’s concept of focalization and its later revisions, the paper argues that the novel’s monologic form and first-person narration transform the Muslim subject from an object of the Western gaze into an active focalizer. By rendering the Western listener silent and epistemologically subordinate, the novel destabilizes conventional subject–object hierarchies that underpin Neo-Orientalist representation. Ultimately, the article contends that The Reluctant Fundamentalist functions not only as a thematic critique of post-9/11 Islamophobia but also as a formal intervention that reconfigures narrative power and challenges hegemonic modes of seeing, knowing, and speaking about the Muslim “Other.”.

Improving earthquake resistance in rc buildings via steel bracing members

    Yön, Burak; Tam, Gürkan

In this study, the effect of retrofitting with steel bracing members on the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete buildings was examined. A reinforced concrete building with low concrete strength was modeled for the numerical study. This modeled building was strengthened with steel X-braced members to create a total of two buildings. To evaluate the seismic behavior of the modeled buildings, incremental dynamic analyses were performed using static pushover analysis and 11 different earthquake records. Due to the symmetrical structure of the modeled buildings, a total of 220 analyses were carried out simultaneously in the x and y directions. As a result of the analysis, the capacity curves of the existing building and the strengthened building with steel bracing members, maximum responses, inter-storey drifts, and fragility curves according to the damage status were obtained. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the maximum response of the building strengthened using X steel cross members increased significantly compared to its current state, while the damage to the structural elements was significantly reduced.

Research on Comparative Analysis of Intuitionistic Fuzzy PROMETHEE and TOPSIS Methods

    Tuğrul, Feride

IF based MCDM methods are a current research area that attracts the attention of many re-searchers. In this study, studies examining Offset, Laserjet and Inkjet printing performances of recycled papers using the intuitionistic fuzzy-based PROMETHEE and TOPSIS methods were revised with a new perspective. The most important difference that distinguishes this study from other studies is the creation of a system that simultaneously evaluates all the criteria and the elimination of uncertainty thanks to intuitionistic fuzzy sets. For this purpose, a comparative analysis of the IF based- PROMETHEE and TOPSIS methods was made. The results of the PROMETHEE method, which was created according to numerical data, and the TOPSIS method, which reflects the opinions in linguistic terms, were discussed. Evaluating all the criteria at the same time is what makes the study original. As a result; findings that will shed light on the relevant literature and give researchers a new perspective were obtained.

Türkiye in the Framework of the Preston Curve and Wilkinson Hypothesis: The Transformation of Income Growth, Income Distribution, and Life Expectancy

    Sarı, Sacit

This study examines the validity of the Preston Curve and Wilkinson Hypothesis in the context of the Turkish economy, analyzing the impact of per capita income, income inequality, and public health expenditures on life expectancy. Using data from 1960 to 2022, graphical analysis and time series methods were employed to investigate the relationships between these variables. The key findings indicate that the Preston Curve is valid for Türkiye, as higher per capita income increases life expectancy, but the effect diminishes beyond a certain income level. A negative and statistically significant relationship was found between income inequality and life expectancy, supporting the Wilkinson Hypothesis. Additionally, public health expenditures positively and significantly influence life expectancy, highlighting the importance of government investments in healthcare. The findings suggest that the impact of economic growth on health indicators is not solely determined by rising income levels but also by the reduction of income inequality and increased public health expenditures. Policy recommendations include expanding healthcare spending, implementing social policies to mitigate income inequality, and addressing regional disparities in healthcare access.

Shaping the Future of Datça Peninsula: Exploring Suitable Settlement Areas and Land-Use Scenarios

    Konurhan, Zekeriya; Ceylan, Mehmet Akif

This study examines land use/land cover (LULC) scenarios and identifies areas suitable for settlement on the Datça Peninsula. Datça is one of the four peninsulas in the Aegean Sea and is administratively part of the Muğla province of Türkiye. Forests prevail across the landscape, especially around the stretch shaped by the Datça–Marmaris highway, while agriculture is concentrated on the Datça Plain, Cumali, and Yaka. This study aims to determine land use scenarios and identify suitable areas for future development and settlement. The GeoSOS-FLUS software package, developed based on Markov Chains and Artificial Neural Networks for land use simulations, was used. Aware of the limitations of simulations that do not consider land suitability, a suitability analysis was performed using the Best-Worst Method (BWM), one of the Multi-Criteria Decision Making approaches. Sixteen criteria within four groups—topography, socioeconomics, location, and environment—were evaluated. The suitability analysis results were compared with simulated land use scenarios, and the most suitable areas for future settlements in the Datça Peninsula were identified. This integrated approach provides important information for the sustainable development of the region and the shaping of land use planning.

Macroeconomic determinants of food inflation in Türkiye: Empirical evidence from RALS-based time series analysis

    Sarı, Sacit

This study aims to analyse the macroeconomic determinants of food price inflation in Türkiye using monthly data for the period 2015:01–2025:03. Fluctuations in food prices have significant impacts, particularly on the quality of life and food security of low-income households. In this context, food price inflation is used as the dependent variable. In contrast, the agricultural input price index, commercial loan interest rate, exchange rate, and oil prices are employed as explanatory variables. The stationarity properties of the series are examined through the Zivot-Andrews test and the RALS- LM test with structural breaks. The presence of a long-run cointegration relationship among the variables is tested using the RALS-EG test, and long-run coefficients are obtained via the DOLS method, which addresses endogeneity and serial correlation by augmenting the levels equation with leads and lags of first differences. Empirical findings suggest that agricultural input prices, interest rates, and exchange rates have a positive and significant impact on food inflation. Based on the results, reducing agricultural production costs, expanding the availability of low-interest farm loans, and effectively managing energy subsidies are critical to controlling food inflation.
