Boylu, F.; Obuz Teker, Gülsen; Ersever Angur, Gafure; Ozdemir, O.; Çelik, M.S.
In this study, a more sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly approach for selective lithium extraction via water leach assisted by planetary mill mechanical activation was applied on clayey wastes of the Kırka Boron Plant. A detailed systematic study on wastes was performed to optimize both mechanical activation and leaching conditions and to characterize the active powders by XRD, FTIR and EDS/EDX. The results show that lithium can be recovered at relatively low leach temperatures of 50–60°C and short leach times of 3–5 min, achieving leach recoveries of 44.71 (without salt addition) and 57.71% (with 20% salt addition, w/w) without the need for pre-concentration of the waste. Despite relatively low lithium recoveries, water leaching of activated powder produced remarkably low concentrations of co-leached ionic impurities less than 10 ppm Mg, 20 ppm Ca, and 250 ppm K, compared to significantly higher concentrations observed during 1 M acid leaching (9422 ppm Mg, 564.5 Ca, and 72.5 ppm K, upon 1 M acid leaching, respectively). The presence of Mg ions, in particular, is known to be highly detrimental competing ion in metal recovery processes. Therefore, the proposed method offers both economic and environmental advantages by enabling higher purity lithium recovery under much milder conditions.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ2Production and Thermal–Structural Characterization of Nano-Oxide-Doped Paraffin-Based Phase Change Composite Materials for Thermal Storage Applications
Yücel, Halit Lutfi; Özdemir, Osman; Kahraman, Gökhan
Paraffin-based composite phase change materials (PCMs) have been synthesized for thermal energy storage applications to enhance thermal conductivity and stability while maintaining latent heat storage capacity. In this study, RT42 paraffin was modified with inorganic nano-oxides (Al2O3, CuO, SiO2, and ZnO) in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as a surfactant. The incorporation of SDS improved nanoparticle dispersion and reduced agglomeration, resulting in enhanced phase-change behavior and improved structural homogeneity. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis revealed slight variations in melting and crystallization temperatures, while the ZnO-doped composite retained up to 92% of the latent heat storage capacity of pure RT42. Among all the investigated composites, the Al2O3-doped sample exhibited the highest thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated an increase of approximately 15–20°C in the decomposition temperature, demonstrating enhanced thermal stability. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses confirmed the preservation of the crystalline structure and improved microstructural uniformity. The developed SDS-assisted nano-oxide/RT42 composites exhibit significant potential for passive thermal regulation in renewable energy and building applications.

Karaaslan Ayhan, Nagihan; Seker, Seda
In this study, magnetic iron oxide@neodymium/alginate (Fe3O4@Nd/Alg) beads were prepared by ionic crosslinking with neodymium (Nd) ions, then subjected to heat treatment, and for the first time, effective removal of Reactive Blue 4 (RB 4) dye from aqueous solution was achieved with these beads. For this purpose, ideal adsorption conditions that significantly affect the removal of this dye were determined. The ideal adsorption conditions were determined as pH:5, contact time (t):60 min, amount of magnetic Fe3O4@Nd/Alg bead (m):10 mg, initial RB 4 dye concentration (C0):25 mg/L, temperature (T): 25 °C. Adsorption isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic studies were carried out under the ideal adsorption conditions. The adsorption data was found to completely follow Langmuir model for RB 4 dye and the maximum adsorption capacity of RB 4 was found to be 263.16 mg/g. The adsorption kinetic data was found to be compatible with pseudo-second order and adsorption processes were explained by intraparticle diffusion. In adsorption thermodynamics studies, it has been determined that the nature of the adsorption reaction is spontaneous, endothermic and with increasing randomness. Furthermore, reuse studies of magnetic Fe3O4@Nd/Alg beads were carried out and it was determined that these beads could be used successfully up to 10 adsorption/desorption cycles.

Say, Yakup; Aslan, Naim; Cihangir, Salih; Murat, Oğuzkağan; Çaydaş, Ulaş
The Ti-6Al-4V alloy is particularly favored for orthopedic applications. However, important issues such as corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and ion release need to be addressed. Therefore, this study aims to enhance the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility and reduce the ion release of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy by applying Y2O3-doped bioglass bioceramic coatings. The coatings were synthesized using the sol-gel method, including pure BioGlass and BioGlass with 1, 5, and 10 wt pct Y2O3. These coatings were then evaluated for their corrosion resistance, adhesion strength, degradation behavior, bioactivity, and ion release. The results showed that all coatings exhibited homogeneous, crack-free, and porous morphologies, which are favorable for osteointegration. The addition of 10 wt pct Y2O3 to the BioGlass coating resulted in a 52 pct increment in adhesion strength, which increased from 13.72 ± 2.80 MPa for single BioGlass coatings to 20.81 ± 2.53 MPa. All samples showed degradation values lower than 1 wt pct. Single BioGlass coatings significantly enhanced the bioactivity of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. However, the addition of Y2O3 negatively impacted BioGlass bioactivity, leading to a noticeable decrease as the Y2O3 content increased. Conversely, the presence of Y2O3 negatively impacted bioactivity and corrosion resistance while increasing the release of Ti ions. Specifically, the release of Ti ions increased from 79.5 ± 0.8 ppb in uncoated samples to 253.7 ± 15.3 ppb in BG-coated samples. For 1, 5, and 10 pct Y2O3-added samples, Ti releases were measured as 192.2 ± 33.6 ppb, 168.5 ± 62.4 ppb, and 194.3 ± 54.4 ppb, respectively. This research highlights the potential of tailored BioGlass coatings to improve the performance of Ti-6Al-4V alloys in orthopedic implant applications, particularly for enhancing bone integration and reducing implant failure.

Karaduman, Oktay; Kalay, Ece; Ozkul, Iskender; Kurgun, Mehmet Ali; Canbay, Canan Aksu; Guler, Omer; ALMisned, Ghada; Baykal, Duygu Sen; Tekin, H.O.
A novel Cu-based high-temperature shape memory alloy (HTSMA) with the composition 70.84Cu–23.80Al–4.14Mn–1.22Fe (at. %) was successfully synthesized via arc melting in this study. The effects of thermal aging duration on the alloy’s martensitic transformation behavior, shape memory effect (SME), and microstructural evolution were systematically investigated. Six samples were prepared from the as-cast ingot: one was homogenized in the β-phase region and quenched into ice-brine to induce a martensitic structure, while five others were subsequently aged at 350 ℃ for varying durations and air-cooled. Thermal and structural characterizations were conducted. These included differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and optical microscopy. Prolonged aging altered transformation temperatures and reduced both enthalpy and entropy values. It also promoted the formation of observed precipitates, vacancies, and coarsened 2H martensites. Prolonged aging altered the microstructure and thermal response, leading to partial SME degradation. Additionally, the alloy’s gamma-ray and fast neutron shielding parameters were theoretically estimated using simulation software to explore its potential functional scope. The calculated results indicate that the CuAlMnFe HTSMA is predicted to exhibit favorable attenuation performance across a wide energy spectrum, with appropriate values of mass attenuation coefficient (MAC) and half-value layer (HVL). In particular, the fast neutron removal cross-section was calculated as 0.139 cm−1, which is significantly higher than those of water (0.1023 cm−1), graphite (0.0773 cm−1), and B4C (0.0714 cm−1). In conclusion, the CuAlMnFe HTSMA developed in this study offers a unique profile combining tailorable shape memory behavior with a computationally predicted potential for nuclear radiation shielding. These properties offer novel insights into the alloy’s potential for applications in high-radiation environments that require both mechanical actuation and radiation protection, pending experimental validation of its shielding performance.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ2Hydrocolloid materials of fish bone-derived in edible films: can hydroxyapatite be an alternative approach to improving fillet shelf life?
Alak, Gonca; Kuzgun, Nermin Karaton
The valorization of industrial fish waste has gained significant scientific interest due to its integrated benefits such as waste management and resource recovery. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of fish bones, which is one of the wastes of aquaculture processing and constitutes approximately 9–15% of the waste generated as a result of the process, as a preservative in the food industry within the scope of green chemistry applications, sustainability and green product targets. In line with this objective, in the first stage, hydroxyapatite (HAP) was obtained from the fish bones, in the second stage, chitosan (Ch)-based coating solutions were enriched with HAP at different levels (0.02, 0.04 and 0.08 g / L) and in the last stage, fillets were coated with this solution and fillet quality parameters were monitored by microbiological, chemical and sensory analyses at certain intervals (0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 days) during 12 days of storage (at + 4 °C). Based on the data obtained during the storage period, the shelf life of control (Chitosan, Ch). chitosan + low HAP (Ch + L-HAP) and chitosan + medium HAP (Ch + M-HAP) fillet groups increased by 50%, 26% and 20%, respectively, compared to chitosan + high HAP (Ch + H-HAP). In the findings obtained, it was determined that the high concentration application (Ch + H-HAP) had a negative effect on all the parameters studied in fillets, and when the data on the last day of storage, especially the microbiological results were taken into consideration, it was determined that the shelf life decreased by 20–50% on average compared to the other concentrations (Ch + L-HAP and Ch + M-HAP) and Ch group and caused serious negativities in sensory parameters. Based on this result, it would be useful to try low and medium levels of this compound in different combinations. These findings indicate that HAP-enriched chitosan coatings have potential as a promising delivery system for the effective and controlled transport of bioactive ingredients in the food industry.

Dogan, Akar; Mahmat, Aybars; Agar, Salih
Recently, the production of materials obtained from plant sources has been increasing due to their environmentally friendly and sustainable sources. Natural fibers and waste materials offer a remarkable alternative in composite production due to their biodegradability, low cost and renewability. In this study, composite materials were produced using hybrid Jute and industrial tea waste-reinforced epoxy materials by vacuum assisted resin infusion molding. In this context, the reason for using natural and industrial resources such as jute fiber and tea waste is to contribute to both the improvement of mechanical properties and the reduction of environmental impacts. It was observed that tensile and flexural strength decreased as the amount of tea waste increased. Conversely, the energy absorbed during the quasi-static punch shear and Charpy impact tests increased, unlike the tensile and flexural strength. Approximately 50% decrease was observed in the tensile strength of the 60% tea waste reinforced material compared to the pure jute composite material. In Charpy impact and quasi-static punch shear tests, a 5% increase in the energy absorbed in the 60% tea waste reinforced composite materials was obtained.

High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) hold considerable potential for sophisticated nuclear applications, offering a vast spectrum of compositional tuning to enhance mechanical properties at high temperatures, as well as to increase resistance to radiation and corrosion. This study explores the suitability of Cantor HEAs, specifically the CoCrFeMnNi matrix enriched with elements such as Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta, and W, for nuclear applications. These elements were selected for their high atomic numbers and neutron capture cross-sections, vital for enhancing gamma-ray and neutron shielding properties. Utilizing advanced computational and theoretical methods, the elastic modulus of these alloys was theoretically estimated while their radiation attenuation capabilities were evaluated through different Monte Carlo simulation codes. CoCrFeMnNiW demonstrated the highest elastic modulus (340.9 GPa), indicating significant mechanical robustness. The addition of W resulted in superior gamma-ray attenuation, with the lowest gamma-ray transmission factors and highest neutron shielding effectiveness among the studied alloys. The calculated mass attenuation coefficients and effective removal cross-sections values demonstrate the potential of these HEAs to provide effective radiation shielding. Our results showed a clear correlation between the elastic modulus and radiation attenuation properties, suggesting that mechanical stiffness does not compromise shielding capabilities. The comprehensive analysis of thermodynamic and structural parameters, including entropy of mixing, mixing enthalpy, and Valence Electron Concentration (VEC), provided essential insights into phase stability and microstructural characteristics. It can be concluded that CoCrFeMnNiW and its related Cantor HEAs as promising materials for advancing nuclear technology, offering a new horizon for safer and more efficient nuclear systems.

Özkul, İskender; Kalay, Ece; Karaduman, Oktay; Kizilgün, Yasİn; Güler, Ömer; Canbay, Canan Aksu
This study investigates the effects of different cerium additions on the properties of Cu-Al-Mn high-temperature shape memory alloy (HTSMA), such as the characteristic martensitic transformation temperatures, transformational kinetic parameters, and martensitic microstructures which are related to its shape memory mechanism and also to its magnetic behavior. Polycrystalline alloys with a base composition of Cu77.32Al21.02Mn1.67 (at.%) were synthesized, and varying concentrations of cerium (Ce-1 to Ce-4) were added for comparison. Differential scanning calorimetry tests revealed notable increments in transformation temperatures with cerium additions. Specifically, the austenite start temperature of the reference alloy increased from 143.75 °C to 194.88 °C by 0.05 at.% of Ce addition (Ce-3 alloy), corresponding to the formation of CeCu5 and Mn1.15Cu3.85Ce phases. However, excessive Ce addition in Ce-4 led to the over-stabilization of secondary phases, reducing the transformation temperatures. Microstructural analysis indicated that Ce addition of refined grains changed the crystallite size of the martensite structure and reduced lattice strain (from 0.72% to 0.34%). Magnetic characterization demonstrated that Ce addition shifted the alloy towards paramagnetic behavior, with M-H curves showing no significant coercive field or remanent magnetization across the studied alloy samples. These findings suggest that cerium can enhance the high-temperature performance of Cu-Al-Mn HTSMAs, with potential applications in environments requiring both shape memory and magnetic properties.

Imak, Andaç; Doğan, Gürkan; Sengur, Abdulkadir; Ergen, Burhan
Colorectal cancer is a frequently analyzed cancer type seen today. It is the third leading of cancer in terms of incidence. It is among the second leading cases resulting in death. However, when detecting pre-cancerous polyps using traditional methods, the rate of being overlooked is high. Therefore, the rate of missed polyps can be greatly reduced with deep learning-based computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) methods. In this study, a novel convolutional neural network based on CADx, called HASK-Net, is proposed for automatic polyp detection. While HASK-Net uses ResNet50 as a feature extractor in the encoder network, the novely designed hybrid attention selective kernel convolution uses it in the decoder network to increase the representation power in feature maps and learn more complex features. In experimental results on the publicly available Hiper-Kvasir and EndoTech 2020 benchmark datasets, HASK-Net showed extremely promising performance with a dice similarity score of 97.02% and 84.83% and an mIoU score of 95.38% and 84.32%, respectively.

ALMisned, Ghada; Güler, Ömer; Özkul, İskender; Baykal, Duygu Sen; Alkarrani, Hessa; Kilic, G.; Mesbahi, A.; Tekin, H.O.
This study investigates the radiation shielding properties of aluminum-based superalloy high-entropy alloys (HEAs) for potential use in advanced nuclear reactor applications. These HEAs, composed of five or more metals in equimolar or near-equimolar ratios, were evaluated for their thermodynamic stability, mechanical strength, and radiation attenuation capabilities. Key parameters such as entropy of mixing (ΔSmix), enthalpy of mixing (ΔHmix), valence electron concentration (VEC), and atomic size difference (δ) were analyzed. Radiation shielding properties, including mass attenuation coefficients (MAC), half-value layer (HVL), effective atomic number (Zeff), and exposure buildup factor (EBF), were assessed using various simulations. Alloy 12, with its superior MAC, lowest HVL, and high ΣR value, demonstrated exceptional effectiveness in gamma and neutron attenuation. These findings underscore the potential of aluminum-based HEAs, particularly Alloy 12, to enhance the operational capabilities and longevity of nuclear reactors, paving the way for the development of next-generation materials for high-radiation environments.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ2The impact of global value chains on climate change
Ateş, Erdem; Şanlısoy, Selim
Climate change can be defined as the increase in average temperatures due to rising greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, predominantly due to human activities. Carbon emissions have increased at an alarming rate with the emergence of globalization, with its accompanying global value chain, and the consequent increase in global production volume with its polluting sectors. To combat this alarming situation, production with environmentally friendly technologies has emerged recently, and developing countries are embracing more and more costly environmentally friendly production techniques, although they are disadvantaged when it comes to covering the costs. However, it has been observed that they stay behind in this race to adopt environmentally friendly techniques compared to developed countries. The aim of the study, which is a novel contribution to the existing literature, is to examine the relationship between the global value chain and climate change by considering the distinction between developed and developing countries. The study used the data of 156 countries from the years 2000–2018. The results obtained from the generalized method of moments (GMM) show that participation in global value chains has different effects in developed and developing countries regarding carbon emissions. When the level of participation in GVC (global value chain) and FVA (foreign value added) increases, countries’ carbon emissions decrease, and it increases when the DVA (domestic value added) level increases. As a result, in particular, developing countries should green their production methods, and for this purpose, financial support mechanisms should be established.

The primary objective of this study was to examine the effect of Momordica charantia L. extract (MCE) on the generation of heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) in meatball samples. Meatballs were prepared with varying usage rates of MCE (0%, 0.5%, and 1%) and pan-fried at 150 °C, 200 °C, and 250 °C for a total cooking duration of 10 min. The samples were analyzed for proximate composition, pH, cooking loss, and HAA levels. Results indicated that increased cooking temperatures led to higher total HAAs, with specific types and quantities of HAAs varying according to both cooking temperature and MCE concentration. The total HAA content in the meatball samples ranged from 0.81 ng/g and 10.75 ng/g. Specifically, the total HAAs were 1.29 ± 0.38 ng/g, 3.40 ± 1.52 ng/g, and 7.60 ± 2.48 ng/g in meatballs cooked at 150 °C, 200 °C, and 250 °C, respectively (p < 0.05). The addition of MCE at different concentrations reduced the generation of total HAAs, with 0.5% MCE showing the highest inhibitory effect, reducing total HAAs by 30.8%. These findings underscore the significance of considering cooking conditions, including temperature and usage rate, when incorporating antioxidant compounds into meat products.

Angur, G. Ersever; Çınar, M.; Çelik, M.S.
Sepiolite, a natural strategic clay mineral within the phyllosilicate group, is utilized in numerous applications because of its physical, and rheological properties. In particular, outstanding rheological properties are utilized in areas including drilling mud, paint, cosmetics, adhesives, etc. Several studies have been performed for the purification of clays, such as air classification, calcination, hydrocyclone, and flotation, for different purposes. In this study, relatively easy physical upgrading methods involving hydroxyclone, Falcon, and shaking table have been tested with the aim of obtaining a high-viscosity sepiolite product for rheological applications. It is shown that dispersion time, particle size, and pH are the most critical parameters in the viscosity development of sepiolite. The results indicate that, depending on the dispersion time of the raw HS1 sepiolite sample used in this study, the highest quality rheological material remains in the size range of – 2 mm to + 1 mm. Below – 0.1 mm, the viscosity value of the sepiolite sample decreased to its lowest value of 6000 cP. The pH-dependent viscosity measurements of a raw HS1 sepiolite sample exhibited the highest viscosity value of 13,000 cP at its natural pH of 8.5. Polyacrylic acid sodium salt (PAA) is the most effective dispersing agent in the decantation process for the enrichment of HS1 sepiolite samples. Among the three gravity/sizing beneficiation techniques tested, the middlings product of the shaking table achieved the highest quality sepiolite product of 17,000 cP with 49.2 wt.% using the size range of – 2.83 mm to + 1 mm; this material is suitable for high-grade rheological applications.

Objectives: The 12-item Self-Compassion Scale–Short Form (SCS–SF) is a widely used instrument for the assessment of self-compassion. To date, there have been few examinations of this instrument’s psychometric properties, particularly across nations and languages. Therefore, we used data from the Body Image in Nature Survey (BINS) to assess measurement invariance of the SCS–SF across nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups. Methods: Participants (N = 56,968) from 65 nations completed the SCS–SF in 40 languages. Using these data, we tested various hypothesised models of the SCS–SF in the total sample and, using multi-group confirmatory factor analysis, tested for invariance of the optimal model across national groups, languages, gender identities, and age groups. Results: In the total dataset, we found that an 11-item, 2-factor model (i.e., SCS-11) provided best fit to the data, with the two factors tapping distinct constructs of compassionate and uncompassionate self-responding. The SCS-11 was found to be partially scalar invariant across national groups and languages, and fully scalar invariant across gender identities and age groups. There was wide variation in latent means for the two factors, particularly across national groups and languages. Further analyses showed negligible associations between the two factors and sociodemographic variables, including marital status, financial security, and urbanicity. Conclusions: Our results suggest that it may be possible to derive a stable 2-factor model of the SCS–SF for use in cross-cultural research, but also highlight the likelihood of cross-national and cross-linguistic variations in the way that self-compassion is understood.

Post-harvest quality and product losses are significant for hawthorn fruits, which have a short shelf life and limited marketing period. This study examined the effects of putrescine applications to maintain the physical quality and biochemical contents of hawthorn fruits and extend their shelf life during cold storage. Hawthorn fruits were treated with different doses of putrescine (0.5 mM, 1 mM, and 2 mM) and stored for 30 days. The effects of putrescine applications on weight loss, decay rate, fruit firmness, soluble solids content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA), total phenolic content, total antioxidant content, individual phenolic compounds, and organic acid properties were evaluated on the 10th, 20th, and 30th days of storage. At the end of the cold storage, the lowest weight loss and decay rate and the highest fruit firmness were observed in the 1 mM putrescine application. In general, putrescine applications maintained total phenolic content, with the increase in total antioxidant content continuing until the 20th day. The highest increase in total phenolic and total antioxidant content was observed with the 1 mM putrescine application. Succinic acid, a decreasing phenolic compound, was identified as the primary acid in hawthorn fruits throughout storage. The storage period and putrescine application dose caused increases and decreases in phenolic compounds. Gallic acid was determined as the highest phenolic compound in hawthorn fruit. The 1 mM putrescine application was found to be the most effective application for organic acids and phenolic compounds. Putrescine, one of the main polyamines, was shown to be an effective method for maintaining the quality and shelf life of hawthorn fruit. Additionally, this study is expected to serve as a foundation for future similar studies.

Natural fiber-reinforced epoxy composites (NFRCs) have gained significant attention in recent years due to their potential as environmentally friendly and sustainable materials. These composites combine natural fibers, derived from plants, with epoxy resins to create a material with enhanced properties. The objective of this study is to investigate the mechanical, wear and thermal properties of NFRCs incorporating cotton, sisal, coir and wool fibers. The vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) technique was employed to produce composite plates, followed by conducting tests on tensile, wear and thermal properties. The cotton composite showcased the highest tensile strength, reaching 52.81 MPa, while the coir composite exhibited the lowest, measuring 15.34 MPa. Sisal composite exhibited a moderate wear rate (1.423 mm3/Nm) and a lower coefficient of friction (0.233), implying smoother relative motion. Coir composite presented the highest wear rate (4.615 mm3/Nm), attributed to its coarse fiber nature. Thermal conductivity is highest at cotton composite (1.017 W/mK) and is lowest at coir composite (0.187 W/mK). Additionally, the highest specific heat was observed in the coir composite (26.313 MJ/m3K). Cotton demonstrated potential for efficient heat transfer, while wool outperformed in insulation. Sisal displayed versatility for structural applications. Coir emerged as an effective insulator with energy-saving applications.
