Göksu, İdris; Aslan, Alper; Turgut, Yiğit Emrah
The aim of this study is to examine mobile games in the context of their content and to evaluate the situations faced by children through document analysis in terms of age-rating, game score, access permissions, the inclusion of advertisements, in-game purchases, encouraging consumerism, the inclusion of violence, bad habits, and educational value. The review and rating data of the games which can be found in Common Sense Media and Google Play Store were included in the study. These data were analyzed by descriptive content analysis using frequency (f) and percentage(%) values. According to our findings, it was revealed that 92% of the games involved in the study included in-game purchases and 75% of them included advertising. As a result of the investigations, it was also found that mobile games requested a lot of access permissions during installation. In addition, it was concluded that 90% of mobile games encouraged consumerism and 50% contained violence and fear elements. We think that the results are important in the way that they reveal the possible risks encountered by young people while they are playing mobile games and also in terms of increasing the awareness on the subject for both the users and their parents.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Scopus SJRQ1Thermal Image Processing Technique for Determination of Temperature Distributions of Minced Beef Thawed by Ohmic and Conventional Methods
Döner, Deniz; Çokgezme, Ömer Faruk; Çevik, Mutlu; Engin, Mustafa; İçier, Filiz
In the present study, the effectiveness of ohmic thawing (OT) on temperature distribution (TD) was evaluated by using a non-destructive measurement method: thermal imaging (TI). The effects of both OT process parameters and sample properties on TD of thawed minced beef were determined. Thermal images were taken from the central cross-sectional area of a thawed sample. In the first part of the study, the effects of OT system parameters (voltage gradient; 10–13–16 V/cm and electrode type; E1:titanium foil electrode with a smooth surface, E2: needled-type titanium electrode, E3: titanium electrode with pyramid surface shaped) and sample shape (X: 13 × 4 × 3 cm3; Y: 13 × 6 × 2 cm3; Z: 13 cm height × 3.91 cm diameter) were analyzed in detail. The best thawing condition (electrode type E2 and sample shape Y) was determined by taking into account of thawing time and TD properties obtained from a developed TI processing technique. In the second part of the study, the effects of OT process on TD properties of minced beef having different fat contents (2–10–18%) were compared with those of two different conventional thawing processes (stationary cold ambient + 4 °C -RT and under cold running water + 4 °C -WT). The percentage of thawed portions in central section was above 68% for OT and varied between 12 and 54% for CT. Rectangular-shaped samples had more homogeneous temperature distributions than cylindrical samples (p < 0.05). TI could be used to control the process by non-destructive monitoring of temperature during OT.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Scopus SJRQ3Age and growth of the phaeton dragonet, Synchiropus phaeton (Actinopterygii: Perciformes: Callionymidae), from the gulf of iskenderun, north-eastern mediterranean, Turkey
Başusta, Asiye; Ozcan, Ebru İfakat; Başusta, Nuri
Background. Synchiropus phaeton (Günther, 1861) is a sexually dimorphic, benthic species that inhabits mud bottoms. This fish is one of the important by catch species in the trawl fishing. There is no commercial value. But it has ecological importance in this area. The information about the biology of S. phaeton is very limited. This study was conducted to investigate the age and growth relation of phaeton dragonet inhabiting the Gulf of Iskenderun, north-eastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Materials and methods. A total of 289 phaeton dragonets were collected as discards during the commercial trawl fishing at the depth range of 100–150 m in the Gulf of Iskenderun, north-eastern Mediterranean. The fish age was determined from sagittal otoliths. The age readings were performed using Leica S8APO microscope and were documented with the Leica Application Suite (Ver. 4.8.0) software. The index of the mean percentage error (IMPE) was calculated to assess the precision of the age determination between two independent readers. Growth parameters for all specimens were subsequently determined by fitting the observed and the length-at-age data using the von Bertalanffy growth equations. Total length–weight relations (LWRs) and the condition factor (CF) were determined. Results. The total length and weight of S. phaeton ranged from 7.0 to 19.0 cm and from 2.01 to 22.0 g, respectively. The age of the studied individuals ranged from 2 to 7 years. The parameters of von Bertalanffy growth fitted to the mean observed total lengths-at age for each sex separately and were estimated as L∞ = 23.358 cm, K = 0.248 year–1, t0 = –0.501 years for females and L∞ = 26.543 cm, K = 0.156 year–1, t0 = –0.662 years for males, respectively. The overall growth performance index (G) value was determined as 3.46 for the combined sexes. The total length– weight relations were determined as W = 0.0121TL2.55, R² = 0.94; 95% confidence intervals of b = 2.395–2.687, t-test P < 0.05 for females and W = 0.0094TL2.64,R2 = 0.93; 95% confidence intervals of b = 2.470–2.803, t-test P < 0.05 for males. The types of growth were found negatively allometric (b < 3). The highest condition factor was found at the age of 2 (0.62), while the lowest was found at the age of 6 (0.26). Conclusions. The presently reported study provides the first data on the age and growth of the S. phaeton that had not been studied previously in the Gulf of Iskenderun, north-eastern Mediterranean of Turkey. This study will contribute significantly to the conservation and management strategies of the species of S. phaeton in the future.

Say, Yakup; Guler, Omer; Dikici, Burak
In this study, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of AZ61 and AZ91 magnesium matrix composites reinforced with 01, 0.2, and 0.5 wt% carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were investigated, detailly. CNTs have been successfully synthesized with 15–20 nm diameters by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method and then, added to magnesium alloys by using the powder metallurgy (PM) technique. The composite compacts were consolidated by cold-pressing under 500 MPa pressure and sintered for 2 h at 500 °C under Ar atmosphere. The characterization studies of the unreinforced alloys and composites were carried out by scanning and transmission electron microscopes (SEM, TEM), electron dispersive spectroscope (EDS), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The mechanical properties and corrosion behaviors of the composites have been compared with compression tests and potentiodynamic scanning (PDS) techniques, respectively. The results showed that the effect of CNTs reinforcement on strength increase was greater in AZ61 series samples than AZ91-based composites. The corrosion results of the presented study showed that the composites reinforced with lower CNTs (such as 0.1 or 0.2 wt%) and unreinforced alloys had better corrosion resistance than high CNTs (such as 0.5 wt%) containing structures. However, the most resistant structure to the corrosion for both AZ61 and AZ91 alloys were obtained in the composites reinforced with 0.2 wt% CNTs.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Scopus SJRQ1Geodynamic importance of the strike-slip faults at the eastern part of the Anatolian Scholle: Inferences from the uplift and slip rate of the Malatya Fault (Malatya-Ovacık Fault Zone, eastern Turkey)

Controversy remains over when present-day configuration of the Anatolia boundary faults came into existence, and the issue of what are the driving forces of the Anatolian westward motion. The NW-striking dextral and NE-striking sinistral second-order strike-slip faults at the eastern part of the Anatolian Scholle play a crucial role within these long-lasting discussions, and the NE-striking sinistral Malatya–Ovacık Fault Zone (MOFZ) is particularly important in this ongoing debate. Although the MOFZ is defined as one of the intra-plate structures, it has been proposed that it was an inter-plate fault between the Anatolia and Arabian plates from the latest Miocene to mid-Pliocene and that it has been inactive during the last ca. 3.5 Ma. This study provides results from the first morphochronology-based uplift and slip rate estimates on the Malatya Fault within the southern section of the MOFZ. The cosmogenic isochron burial and cosmogenic depth burial of ages from the sinistrally offset Tohma River remnant terraces enabled us to calculate 1.0 ± 0.01 and 1.12 ± 0.01 mm/yr minimum and maximum horizontal slip rates, respectively, for the last 1.4 ± 0.1 Ma. Furthermore, we conclude that the 96 ± 11 m/Ma mean uplift has been driven by the Malatya Fault. Integrated interpretation of the findings of this study and available data on both the MOFZ and other strike-slip faults at the eastern part of the Anatolian Scholle support the hypothesis that they are plate-boundary related active deformation belts that originated from paleotectonic structures during the tectonic escape of the Anatolian Scholle.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Scopus SJRQ33d surface modeling of late pleistocene glaciers in the Munzur mountains (Eastern Turkey) and its paleoclimatic implications
Çilğin, Zeynel
Located in the Eastern Anatolian Region in Turkey, the Munzur Mountains (Munzurs; 3463 m above sea level) are one of the most important glacial landscapes in Turkey, with evidence for extensive glaciations in the past and small-scale glaciation at present. As Turkey’s second-largest glaciated region, these mountains include various glacial landforms, primarily glacial valleys, hanging valleys, cirques, and moraines. However, only limited data are available on the extent and chronology of former glaciations in the Munzur Mountains. This study produced data on the extent of paleoglaciers, calculated their equilibrium line altitudes (ELAs), revealed paleoclimate conditions, and modeled paleo temperatures during maximum ice extent using numerically derived reconstruction methods (GlaRe and ELA calculation tools) based on geomorphic evidence. The major glacial landforms were first mapped in detail before the reconstruction. Six hundred and eighty cirques and 30 glaciated valleys were identified. Paleoglaciers did not override the entire mountains, however, valley glaciers converged where topographic conditions were suitable. The maximum extent of glaciation covered an area of ca. 600 km2. The largest glacier was ca. 19 km in length. Moreover, 15 of the valley glaciers were over 10 km in length. Their average thickness was 75 m, and the maximum glacial thickness, in the Eastern Munzurs, was found to be ca. 300 m. The total volume of ice reached ca. 45 km3. The paleoglaciers reached as low as 1350 m above sea level. The average ELA was calculated approximately 2600 m above sea level, indicating an equilibrium line altitude depression of 1000–1100 m. The paleotemperatures, estimated based on different scenarios at the time of the maximum extent of Munzur glaciers, were 8–10 °C lower than today. The mountains experienced an increase in precipitation through this period with respect to the current precipitation scheme.

Kurnaz Yetim, Nurdan; Aslan, Naim; Koç, Mumin Mehmet
Catalytic properties of Bi2S3 nanostructures, Fe3O4 nanoparticles and novel Bi2S3@Fe3O4 magnetic nanocomposites were investigated. Flower-like Bi2S3 nanostructures were produced using hydrothermal synthesis. Bi2S3 nanostructures were doped with Fe3O4 nanoparticles where Bi2S3@Fe3O4 novel magnetic nanocomposites was obtained. Structural characterization of the nanoflowers were performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Microscopic characterization of the nanoflowers was performed using electron microscopy where scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were used in the characterization which confirms the flower like structures. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) confirmed the magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic characteristics of the magnetic nanocomposites. Optic properties of the nanoparticles were assessed using Ultraviolet - visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. Band gap energies of the Bi2S3, Fe3O4 and Bi2S3@Fe3O4 were found to be 1.80 eV, 2.0 eV and 2.72 eV, respectively. Catalytic properties of the Bi2S3@Fe3O4 nanoparticles were confirmed using UV spectroscopy where reduction of p-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol was assessed in the presence of NaBH4. It was concluded that Bi2S3 nanostructures and Bi2S3@Fe3O4 nanocomposites showed better catalytic performance than that of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Such a case was attributed to increased surface area - volume ratio. Results indicate that nanocomposites have the potential to be used in the wastewater treatment.

Ipek, Yeliz
Zinc borate is a boron-containing chemical material that is used to increase the flame retardancy of polymeric materials, dyes, cables, fabrics, carpets, and the internal parts of automobiles and planes. Commercially used zinc borate, which has the formula of 2ZnO·3B2O3·7H2O, has a particle size between 10 and 20 μm. However, recent studies have shown that nanosized flame retardants have more superior flame retardancy and less negative effects on mechanical properties than microsized flame retardants. Nanosized flame retardants disperse more homogeneously and even low quantities are sufficient to provide high flame resistance. In this study, nano zinc borate powder was synthesized by a wet chemical method and the effects of nonionic, anionic, and cationic surfactants on the particle size and morphology of the zinc borate particles were investigated. Chemical purity and physical structures of the synthesized zinc borate powder were analyzed by XRD, FTIR, TG-DTA, TEM, and Zetasizer. The analysis results showed that the zinc borate powder had a chemical formula of 2ZnO·3B2O3·7H2O. TEM and Zetasizer results indicated that the nano zinc borate powder, which had nanoscale particle size distribution with needle- and flake-like structures, was synthesized using nonionic, anionic, and cationic surfactants.

İncele - MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ3A fuzzy-based occupational health and safety risk assessment framework and a case study in an international port authority
Gul, Muhammet
Ports are complex systems that play a crucial role in the transportation of maritime-related products and services. Since ports face various safety issues in design, installation, operation and maintenance processes, there are many aspects open for improvement in Occupational Health and Safety risk assessment and it is required to deal with risks, reduce them to an acceptable level and control. To struggle with emerging risks and manage this process better, a risk assessment framework is proposed for ports in this study. A case study is performed in a Turkish international port authority using the proposed framework. Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP), which is a commonly used fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making method, was used in weighting two risk factors: likelihood and severity. The orders of priority of hazards were then determined by a fuzzy-based VIKOR method based on the output of FAHP. The proposed framework overcomes some drawbacks, including a lack of assignment on the weight to two risk assessment factors and lack of the high dependence of the prioritisation on the experts’ opinions. To validate the results, a sensitivity analysis was conducted. In conclusion, the study contributes to the applicability of the proposed framework to assess the risks in ports and provides a distinct risk prioritisation.

In this study, titanium dioxide (TiO2)-based graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs)-reinforced composite materials were produced and the electrical and optical properties of the composite materials were investigated. Graphene, which was used as a reinforcing material, was produced by using liquid-phase exfoliation method. While the TiO2 used as matrix material was commercially available for the first group of samples, it was produced by using the sol–gel method for the second group of the samples. Different rates of graphene were added to the TiO2 powders which were commercially available and produced by using sol–gel method. GNPs used as a reinforcing material were subjected to TEM analysis. The resulting composite materials were structurally examined in SEM and XRD. Then, the changes in electrical conductivity of these composites under the impact of temperature were measured. UV–Vis spectrometers of the samples were taken and their optical properties were determined. When temperature-based electrical examination of the produced composite materials was performed, an increase was observed on the electrical conductivity values in both groups of samples as a result of addition of the reinforcing element. In addition, TiO2-containing composites produced by using sol–gel method had lower electrical conductivity comparing with commercially purchased TiO2-containing composites especially at high temperatures. In the optical measurements, it was observed that there was an increase in the optical bandgap energy range values with GNPs reinforcement but a decrease in the reflectance values.

Çimen, Okay; Corcoran, Loretta; Kuebler, Corinne; Simonetti, Stefanie S.; Simonetti, Antonio
In Turkey, the largest fluorine (F)-rare earth element (REE)-thorium (Th) deposits are located within the Eskişehir-Kızılcaören (north-western Anatolia) and the Malatya-Kuluncak (east-central Anatolia) regions, and these are associated with Oligocene extensional alkaline volcanic and Late Cretecaous-Early Paleocene postcollisional intrusive rocks, respectively. In the Kızılcaören region, the basement units include the Triassic Karakaya Complex and the Late Cretaceous oceanic units (Neotethyan suture) that are cut and overlain by phonolite and carbonatite intrusions and lava flows. In the Kuluncak region, the plutonic rocks are mainly composed of syenite, quartz syenite, and rare monzonite, and these cut the late-Cretaceous Karapınar limestone, which hosts the F-REE-Th mineralization in contact zones. A carbonatite sample from the Kızılcaören region displays both a total rare earth element (TREE) concentration (4795 ppm) and δ11B (–6.83‰) isotope composition consistent with mantle-derived carbonatite; whereas it is characterized by heavier δ13C (+1.43‰) and δ18O (+20.23‰) isotope signatures compared to those for carbonatites worldwide. In contrast, the carbonates which host the F-REE-Th mineralization in the Kuluncak region are characterized by lower TREE concentrations (5.13 to 55.88 ppm), and heavier δ13C (–0.14 to –0.75‰), δ18O (+27.36 to +30.61‰), and δ11B (+5.38 to +6.89‰) isotope ratios compared to mantle-derived carbonatites. Moreover, the combined initial87Sr/86Sr (0.70584 to 0.70759) and143Nd/144Nd (0.512238 to 0.512571) isotope ratios for samples investigated here are distinct and much more radiogenic compared to those for carbonatites worldwide, and therefore indicate significant crustal input and/or hydrothermal metasomatic-related alteration. Overall, stable and radiogenic isotope data suggest that the host carbonate rocks for the F-REE-Th mineralization in both the Kızılcaören and the Kuluncak regions consist of hydrothermally metasomatized carbonatite and limestone, respectively. The mineralization in the Kızılcaören region may potentially be related to carbonatite magmatism, whereas the mineralization in the Kuluncak region, which most likely formed through interactions between the plutonic rocks and surrounding limestone at contact metamorphism zone, involved hydrothermal/magmatic fluids associated with extensive postcollisional magmatism.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ3Investigation of the Effect of Operating Conditions Change on Water Hammer in Hydroelectric Power Plants
Kahraman, Gökhan
Renewable energy sources do not harm the environment, and they contribute greatly to national economies. Hydraulic energy is the leading renewable energy source. Hydraulic energy is used more widely than other renewable energy sources around the world. This situation of hydraulic energy makes it important to solve the faults in hydraulic turbine-generator units. In this study, water hammer impacts have been investigated. This issue is important and can be dangerous in hydroelectric power plants. As a result of the research, the optimum sudden shutdown time of the adjusting wings in the snail is determined by considering the different operating conditions of a hydroelectric power plant. When the turbine-generator units are operated according to the specified instantaneous shutdown time, they will be protected against the impact of the water hammer pressure and the turbine shaft overspeed. Thus, they will be operated with less risk.

Aktitiz, İsmail; Varol, Remzi; Akkurt, Nevzat; Saraç, Mehmet Fahri
The interest of additive manufacturing with 3D printing increases day by day, which provides improved mechanical, electrical, magnetic and thermal properties of 3D parts. The production of 3D parts with the stereolithography (SLA) method, which allows it to be produced with high precision, resolution and complex geometries, distinguishes itself from other alternative additive manufacturing methods (FDM. SLS. LOM. LMD etc.). However, studies on the preparation of functional 3D polymer nanocomposites with the SLA method are quite limited. This study aims to produce silver (Ag) and/or copper (Cu) based 3D polymer nanocomposites for enhancing its mechanical strength, thermal stability and electrical conductivity. Mono and bimetallic (Cu/Ag) nanoparticles have been in-situ synthesized by selective irradiation of laser beam method using a commercial SLA device. In this method, metal (Cu/Ag) acrylate containing photocurable resin is not only cured but also leads to thermal decomposition of metal ions into nanoparticles to form functional 3D structures. The mechanical, electrical and thermal properties of polymer nanocomposites are characterized in detail. As a result of the analysis, the nanoparticles, with an average diameter of 25–55 nm, are well dispersed in the polymer matrix without agglomeration. The temperature at which 5% weight loss of Ag and Cu based polymer structures is measured as 179.3 °C while the glass transition temperature is found to be 223.81 °C. Most importantly, the resistance values are significantly decreased from 456.62 GΩ (Gigaohm) to 1.50 GΩ by increasing the amount of Ag addition at 3D polymeric structures. Therefore, this study allows the production of polymer nanocomposites not only in complex structures but also in desired properties especially for electrically conductive materials, capacitors and electronic applications.

Demir, Pelin; Gul, Muhammet; Guneri, Ali Fuat
The adverse impact of occupational accidents and occupational diseases on the society have recently increased a lot since the industrial-oriented society is getting more and more widespread. Although attempts regarding occupational health and safety (OHS) increase in Turkey, they are still at an inadequate level. OHS experts prepare employees for a healthy and safer working environment, so that work accidents can be eliminated and employees can be healthy psychologically and physically. At the same time, the worksites can be prevented from being financially damaged and productivity can be improved. The aim of this study is to measure OHS service quality by the evaluations of OHS experts from various sectors and workplaces. In this way, the OHS performance is measured, the difference between perceptions and expectations of the OHS experts is determined and deficiencies are revealed. In the study, the OHS activities are examined in five dimensions using the SERVQUAL scale; tangibility, reliability, responsiveness, assurance and empathy. The questionnaire is carried out using a Likert-type five-point scale among 81 OHS experts from different sectors. In conclusion, SERVQUAL analysis is introduced as a useful tool for employers to better understand what they need to know about OHS services.

Yön, Burak; Onat, Onur; Öncü, Mehmet Emin
Infill and partition walls as nonstructural elements are generally constructed with hollow brick masonry and briquette as single or multilayered vertical walls. The seismic responses of infill walls and reinforced concrete (RC) framed buildings have been investigated with field observations after earthquakes all over the world. This study focuses on the reasons infill and partition walls failed as a result of the October 23, 2011 (Mw=7.2), and November 9, 2011 (Mw=5.7), Van earthquakes in Turkey. In this paper, in-plane, out-of-plane, and combined failure mechanisms of single and multilayered infill walls enclosed within reinforced concrete structures were investigated, and construction rules were suggested. To limit the failure of nonstructural elements enclosed within an RC frame, design and construction requirements should be included in the seismic code by adopting suitable solutions for both in-plane and out-of-plane behavior. This paper will be a reference for future studies that investigate infill wall damage. (c) 2019 American Society of Civil Engineers.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2019Comparative Micromorphological and Anatomical Investigations on the Subsection Distantes R. Bhattacharjee (Stachys L./Lamiaceae)
Açar, Mikail; Satil, Fatih
In this study; comparative anatomical and micromorphological studies were performed on the subsection Distantes of the Stachys L. genus (Lamiaceae). Also, it was determined distinctive anatomical characters for the taxa of subsection in the study. In anatomical studies, free-hand cross-sections and the paraffin embedding method was applied with the microtome. Micromorphological studies were performed in LM (Light Microscope) and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope). In anatomical studies, besides of similarities in stem and leaf structures there were also some differences in taxa. In micromorphological studies, the trichome and nutlet characteristics were found to be useful characters on taxa and at species and subspecies level. As a result of the study, the presence of sclerenchyma like a bundle in the stem structure and the presence and types of glandular trichomes and ornamentation on the surface of nutlet, the presence of the wing and ventral structure in the nutlet were important characters that can be used to distinguish taxa. According to the numerical findings, trichome and nutlet micromorphological characters were more important than anatomical characters.
