    Erust, Ceren

The cathode material of nickel–metal hydride (Ni–MH) batteries includes nickel, cobalt, and rare-earth elements (REEs) such as La, Ce, Nd, and Pr, which are among the critical raw materials (CRMs). Ionic liquids as the environmentally friendly approaches are proposed by various investigations for the extraction of critical metals from spent Ni–MH batteries. In this study, three different Bifunctional Ionic Liquids (Bif-ILs) were designed for comparative studies, namely Aliquat 336–Cyanex 272 (AL–CY), Aliquat 336–PC88A (AL–PC), and Aliquat 336–D2EHPA (AL–D2). The extraction results indicated that temperature has a direct effect on the extraction of critical metals in the presence of all Bif-ILs. Among three types of Bif-ILs, AL–D2 has an optimal extraction power (La: 98.8%, Ce: 94.2%, Nd: 99.2%, and Pr: 98.4%) after precipitation of 99.99% of Ni and Co. Furthermore, kinetics modeling is used for reaction mechanisms investigation. Results indicated that the mixed controlled model by shrinking core model (diffusion controlled and chemical reaction controlled) was the best model fitted to all data (coefficient of determination (R2) > 0.90). according to the Arrhenius equation, activation energies for all REEs in the presence of all Bif-ILs are between 13 and 42 kJ/mol that reflects a mixed controlled reaction.

Kaya, Turgay; Kaya, Duygu; Atar, Fatmanur

This study introduces a DL and metaheuristic optimization-based framework for fetal health assessment using cardiotocography (CTG) signals to mitigate maternal and neonatal mortality. One-dimensional CTG signals were transformed into 2D representations, and deep feature extraction was performed using AlexNet. Feature vectors FC6, FC7, and their combination were subjected to optimization via Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA + DL) and War Strategy Optimization (WSO + DL), utilizing updated fitness functions tailored for feature selection. Experimental results with SVM classifiers demonstrated superior performance with FC6 (89.98 %) and WSO + DL (90.17 %). FC6 exhibited strong discriminative capacity, while FC7 contained semantically richer features. The concatenated FC6 + FC7 vector increased feature diversity. WSO + DL achieved optimal balance across classification accuracy, feature subset size, convergence rate, and overall performance metrics. The integration of DL and metaheuristic algorithms effectively isolated informative feature subsets, improving training efficiency, minimizing redundant/noisy data, reducing overfitting risk, and enhancing classification accuracy. Optimization method selection proved critical to overall model performance.

Eu2O3-driven tailoring strategies on Al6061-Alloy for nuclear applications: A comprehensive study on structural, physical, and radiation transmission properties

Basgoz, Oykum; Guler, Seval Hale; Guler, Omer; ALMisned, Ghada; Baykal, Duygu Sen; Kilic, G.; Tekin, H.O.

In this study, Al6061–Eu2O3 composites were fabricated via mechanical alloying and systematically characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy to evaluate structural and compositional features. The incorporation of Eu2O3 in varying weight percentages (1–20 wt%) was confirmed by XRD, revealing phase retention and crystallite refinement, while SEM–EDS analyses indicated uniform elemental distribution at low doping and localized clustering at higher reinforcement levels. Radiation shielding properties were comprehensively assessed through mass and linear attenuation coefficients, half value layer, effective atomic number, fast neutron removal cross section, buildup factors, and photon transmission factors. The results demonstrated a strong correlation between increasing Eu2O3 content and improved shielding performance. The E20 composite exhibited a mass attenuation coefficient of 22.33 cm2/g at 0.015 MeV, over threefold higher than the base alloy, and fast neutron removal cross section improved by 22.5 % compared to Al6061 alone. Additionally, EBF and EABF values decreased significantly, confirming reduced secondary photon build-up. These findings validate the effectiveness of Eu2O3 as a reinforcement phase for tailoring Al6061 for multifunctional applications, particularly in nuclear, aerospace, and radiological environments requiring lightweight materials with superior gamma and neutron attenuation.

Dürrani, Ömerhan; İşgüzar, Seda; İmak, Andaç; Ateşşahin, Tuncay; Cömert, Zafer; Dürrani, Syeda Zahra; Türkoğlu, Muammer

Fishery management is crucial to sustain marine ecosystems by preventing overfishing and ensuring a fair distribution of fishing quotas. Accurately identifying the geographical origins of fish stocks is a key challenge in region-specific management strategies. Otoliths, calcified structures found in the heads of all fish species (except sharks and rays), provide insights into the life history and geographical origins of these fish. Traditional otolith analysis is time-consuming and error-prone because of manual inspection. Our study presents a novel approach using deep learning and computer vision to automate the geographical recognition of fish using otolith images. We propose a model that integrates MobileNet, which is known for its efficiency, with an advanced Mlp-Mixer that incorporates an attention mechanism to extract enhanced features. When tested on a diverse dataset of otolith images from five regions, the proposed model achieved a remarkable 96% accuracy, significantly outperforming traditional methods. This high accuracy demonstrates the potential to revolutionise fishery management by providing a fast, reliable, and automated solution for geographical region identification. In conclusion, the proposed method demonstrates the transformative potential of combining MobileNet and an attention-based Mlp-Mixer for automated fish geographic recognition using otolith images. This innovative method addresses the limitations of traditional manual inspection and paves the way for more effective and sustainable fishery management practices.

Garipcan, Ali Murat; Aydin, Yılmaz; Özkaynak, Fatih

In this study, an innovative substitution box (s-box) method is proposed, which combines the complexity and unpredictability of chaotic systems with the natural randomness and security features of Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) encoding, in response to the increasing security requirements in the field of modern cryptography. This method, based on the integration of a two-dimensional (2D) hyper-chaotic Vincent map (VM) and DNA encoding techniques, aims to produce secure and high-performance s-boxes. To evaluate the reliability of the s-boxes, fundamental cryptographic criteria such as nonlinearity (NL), strict avalanche criterion (SAC), differential probability (DP), linear approximation probability (LAP), and bit independence criterion (BIC) are considered. Additionally, a novel chaos-based evolutionary optimization algorithm is proposed to optimize the NL criterion of the s-boxes. This algorithm offers a cost-effective and highly efficient alternative compared to classical metaheuristic methods, providing a balanced structure between security and performance. Experimental findings and comparison results demonstrate that the proposed s-boxes offer effective and reliable solutions for modern cryptographic applications, such as secure data transmission and storage. From a broader perspective, the study makes a meaningful contribution to the literature in the field of data security by presenting a high-performance s-box design meeting the security requirements of cryptographic systems and is resilient against current threats.

In Vitro Control of Anisakis Larvae Using Nanoemulsified Thyme, Garlic, and Grape Seed Essential Oils Combined with Brines

Cadun, Aslı; Pekmezci, Gökmen Zafer; Şen Yılmaz, Evren Burcu; Bulat, Fevziye Nihan; Demirtaş, Nida; Çaklı, Atilla; Inci, Abdullah; Yıldırım, Alparslan; Karademir, Gupse Kübra; Erdem, Omer Alper

Introduction: Anisakiasis is a zoonotic parasitic disease transmitted through consumption of fish, with increasing global cases. While thorough cooking kills Anisakis larvae, thermo-stable allergens can still cause allergic reactions. Traditional Mediterranean seafood methods such as marinating, salting, and brining, which lack heat treatment, pose a high risk of anisakiasis. Materials and methods: This study investigated the antilarval effects of nanoemulsions made from thyme, garlic, and grape seed essential oils combined with brines on Anisakis L3 larvae in vitro. Results: Larvae were collected from mackerel, chub mackerel, anchovy, horse mackerel, and sardine, with 1746 larvae examined, mostly Anisakis type I and molecularly identified as A. pegreffii. Thyme oil’s main components, carvacrol and thymol, showed strong antimicrobial and antioxidant effects and superior larvicidal activity at lower doses compared to garlic and grape seed oils. Garlic oil, rich in organosulfur compounds, was more effective in Lakerda samples. High salt brine alone inactivated larvae within 24 h. The thyme oil nanoemulsion had droplet sizes below 90 nm, enhancing stability, whereas garlic and grape seed oils had larger droplets. Conclusion: These results indicate that nanoemulsified essential oils, especially thyme oil, are promising natural agents to control Anisakis larvae in traditional sea-food products.

Multivariable assessment of ınfill strategies for enhanced mechanical properties in 3D-printed curved beams

    Arıkan, Volkan; Dogan, Akar

Purpose – This study specifically focuses on low-to-medium infill densities where the influence of internal geometry on structural performance becomes most dominant. This study aims to explore how different infill patterns and densities affect the mechanical response of curved-axis beams produced by fused filament fabrication-based additive manufacturing (AM), providing insights for optimizing lightweight and material-efficient components subjected to bending loads. Design/methodology/approach – Twenty-seven PLA-based specimens with varying curvature radii (500, 750 and 1000 mm), infill patterns (grid, triangular and trihexagonal) and densities (20%, 30% and 40%) were manufactured. Each was subjected to three-point bending tests following ASTM standards. The experimental approach focused on analyzing force-displacement behavior to evaluate stiffness, load capacity and deformation characteristics under static loading conditions. Findings – Increasing infill density enhanced the maximum force capacity of curved beams but reduced their displacement tolerance, reflecting greater rigidity. The trihexagonal (TH) pattern exhibited the highest displacement values, confirming its energy absorption capability, while the triangular (TA) pattern provided the greatest rigidity with lower deformation. The grid (GR) pattern showed intermediate behavior, with displacement capacity strongly influenced by curvature radius. Straighter beams generally displayed reduced displacement and higher stability, while more curved beams exhibited greater deformation. These results highlight the critical role of infill geometry and curvature in balancing strength, stiffness and energy absorption in three-dimensional (3D)-printed curved beams. Originality/value – Unlike prior studies that focus on high or near-solid infill levels, this work uniquely highlights the mechanical response of additively manufactured curved beams within the low-to-medium infill density range, where infill geometry plays a critical role. The study presents the first detailed comparison of how infill strategies interact with curvature in 3D-printed beams. It delivers practical design guidance for engineers working with curved structures in mechanical, aerospace and civil applications. Its novelty lies in demonstrating how trihexagonal patterns can optimize performance across various geometries, supporting enhanced structural resilience in AM.

Impacts of methyl jasmonate treatments on quality properties and bioactive compounds of jujube fruit (Ziziphus jujuba) during cold storage

Ozturk, Burhan; Karakaya, Orhan; Aglar, Erdal; Hancı, Mehmet Utku; Ozturk, Ahmet; Asghari, Mohammadreza

Background: Jujube is an important fruit species due to its high nutritional value and health benefits. However, the short shelf life of fruit causes quality losses, making it difficult to trade. This study was conducted to determine the effects of postharvest methyl jasmonate (MeJA) applications on the fruit quality and biochemical properties of ‘Li’ jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) cultivar. In the study, fruits were pre-cooled at 7 °C and 85 ± 5% humidity for 24 h and those with diseases, pests, and mechanical damage were eliminated. Then, MeJA was applied to the fruits at concentrations of 0.2 mM and 0.4 mM and stored at 0 ± 0.5 °C and 90 ± 5% humidity for 45 days and analyzes were performed at 15-day intervals. Results: This study showed that MeJA applications positively affected the postharvest quality of jujube fruit. MeJA-applied fruits exhibited lower weight loss and lower respiration rates, and MeJA applications helped preserve fruit color and maintained fruit firmness for a longer time. MeJA was effective in maintaining the total phenolic and flavonoid content in fruit content and the loss of vitamin C content was lower with MeJA application. MeJA was effective for determining soluble solids content (SSC), and titratable acidity and delayed ripening in fruit. Conclussion: MeJA application increases the commercial value of fruits by reducing weight loss, slowing down the ripening process, and preserving higher nutritional content and antioxidant activities and suggest that it can be used as a feasible method for improving fruit protection strategies. MeJA application stands out as an effective method for extending the shelf life of jujube fruits by preserving their post-harvest quality and nutritional values.

Effect of Nano Titanium Dioxide on the Electrical and Thermal Properties of Poly(2,2,2-Trifluoroethyl Methacrylate) for Dielectric Materials

    Barım, Esra; Torgut, Gülben

The increasing application areas of energy storage devices in recent years make it necessary to produce materials with sufficient efficiency. In this study, composites of poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate) P(TFEM) homopolymer with nano titanium dioxide (TiO2 NPs) were prepared for applications of these devices requiring thermoelectric properties, and their thermal, dielectric, and electrical properties were investigated. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that TiO2 NPs in all composites limited the thermal diffusion of TiO2 NPs in the polymer matrix and increased the thermal stability of P(TFEM) from 341°C to 361.5°C. As dielectric properties, the dielectric constant (ε′), dielectric loss (ε″), AC conductivity (σac), and real (Z′) and imaginary (Z″) components of impedance of the composites containing TiO2 NPs were evaluated as functions of frequency and different weight percentages of TiO2 NPs. Increases in ε′ and ε″ at up to 15 wt% TiO2 NPs suggested increased dipole polarization. At 100 Hz, the ε″ value of P(TFEM) increased from 3.2 × 10−2 to 1.1 × 10−2, σac increased from 4.98 × 10−10 to 1.00 × 10−8, Z′ increased from 3.67 × 1010 to 8.66 × 1010, and Z″ increased from 2.09 × 108 to 4.42 × 108. Furthermore, ε′, ε″, and impedance decreased with increasing frequency for both P(TFEM) and TiO2 NPs composites, while σac increased with increasing frequency.

The current study investigated the chemical composition, antioxidant activity, enzyme inhibition, and cytotoxic activities of extracts from Achillea maritima, a wild medicinal plant used for various therapeutic purposes. The antioxidant activities were assayed through different assays like DPPH, ABTS, CUPRAC, FRAP, and phosphomolybdenum, whereas in enzyme inhibition studies, cholinesterase, tyrosinase, α-amylase, and α-glucosidase were assayed. Cytotoxicity studies are conducted on S17, RAW, and HepG2 to assess its selectivity and effectiveness. Chemical profiling by UHPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS revealed multiple bioactive compounds in the extracts. Polar solvents (ethanol, ethanol/water, and water) resulted in high concentrations of phenolic acids as well as chlorogenic and caffeoylquinic acids, as well as flavonoids like vicenin and apigenin. On the other, the nonpolar (hexane extract) was rich in octadecatrienoic acid hydroperoxy and hydroxyoctadecatrienic acid. Among these, the water extract contained the highest phenolic content of 32.26 mg GAE/g, while the ethyl acetate extract was the richest in flavonoids, with 7.83 mg RE/g. In the antioxidant studies, the water and ethanol/water extracts consistently display the most potent activities, thus indicating their significant free radical scavenging and metal chelation abilities. The studies on enzyme inhibitions showed remarkable BChE inhibitory activities of the ethanol extract in 12.50 mg GALAE/g, thus showing potential in managing disease conditions related to cholinesterase. Tyrosinase inhibition was significant by the ethanol extract, presenting 55.59 mg KAE/g. The ethyl acetate extract exhibited the most potent inhibitory activity against α-amylase with 0.66 mmol ACAE/g, while ethanol extract showed significant inhibition of α-glucosidase with 4.35 ACAE/g. Cytotoxicity results showed that the water extract was most effective against the HepG2 cancer cell line by reducing cell viability to 38.4% at high doses while preserving low toxicity against normal cells, as observed by high viability percentages in S17 and RAW cell lines. These results highlight the usefulness of A. maritima extracts in nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, and cosmeceutical applications.

Lighting examples in the world and in Türkiye are examined and positive-negative aspects identified. The examples are evaluated in terms of various criteria such as illuminance levels, colour, accents, visual order, and architectural suitability, and the necessary criteria for lighting design were established. Based on the theoretical background of the study, a lighting design process has been defined for Kızkalesi. The lighting design proposal was developed not only for touristic and architectural purposes, but also in line with basic principles such as increasing the night visibility of the cultural asset, revealing the values of the structure, and taking into account ecological sensitivities, environmental management, and light pollution. It is thought that this plan, which defines how the process should be handled from beginning to end and which experts and actors should guide the process, can also be helpful in the illumination process of other historical buildings.

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) have recently attracted considerable attention due to their unique combination of high strength, hardness, and corrosion and wear resistance, making them promising candidates for advanced structural and functional applications. Among these, AlCoCrFeNi-based HEAs are well known for their high hardness and good wear resistance; however, their limited tribological stability under operational conditions restricts their broader application. To address this limitation, tungsten (W) was incorporated into the AlCoCrFeNi system to enhance its mechanical and tribological performance. In this study, the microstructural, mechanical, and tribological properties of AlCoCrFeNiWx (x = 0, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5 and 1 mol) HEAs were systematically investigated. The alloys were fabricated using the vacuum arc melting method and characterized by XRD, SEM-EDS, elemental mapping, microhardness, and wear tests. The addition of W caused a shift in the 2θ ≈ 44° (110) peak toward lower angles. While the W-free alloy exhibited Body-Centered Cubic (BCC) + B2 phases, W addition led to the formation of a new W-rich phase, and at higher W contents, a pure W phase appeared. The hardness increased from 507.11 HV1 to 651.81 HV1 with increasing W content. Furthermore, wear resistance improved and the coefficient of friction decreased with higher W addition. When comparing the W-free alloy to the alloy with the highest W content, the wear rate decreased by approximately 1.85 times under a 2 N load and 1.89 times under a 5 N load. These results demonstrate that W addition significantly enhances the wear resistance of AlCoCrFeNi-based HEAs by nearly twofold.

High entropy alloys (HEAs) are innovative materials combining multiple principal elements, known for their exceptional properties and wide-ranging applications. This study assesses the gamma-ray shielding capacity of twelve boron-based HEAs through advanced computational methods. Key parameters in terms of understanding the material's ability to reduce radiation intensity, specifically half-value layer (HVL) and tenth-value layer (TVL); its capacity to absorb or scatter photons, including mass attenuation coefficient (MAC) and linear attenuation coefficient (LAC); and other related factors such as equivalent atomic number (Zeq), effective atomic number (Zeff), effective electron density (Neff), mean free path (MFP), and fast neutron removal cross-section (FNRCS) were calculated for photon energies between 0.015 and 15 MeV using the computational method Phy-X/PSD (Photon Shielding and Dosimetry). Additionally, the interaction of alpha particles and protons with these alloys was assessed by calculating energy deposition KERMA (Kinetic Energy Released per Unit Mass) and mass stopping power (MSP) using PAGEX (interaction of protons, alpha, gamma rays, electrons, and X-rays with matter) software, while SRIM (Stopping and Range of Ions in Matter) was employed to estimate particle penetration depths. Electron interactions were evaluated using ESTAR (Stopping Power and Range Tables for Electrons) for stopping power and penetration depth. Among the alloys, Sample 10, S10, (Zr10.8%-Hf21.3%-Nb11.0%-Ta21.6%-W22.0%-B13.1%) exhibited efficient shielding properties due to its high density and interaction characteristics. It can be concluded that boron-based HEAs with optimized compositions and high densities demonstrate significant potential for advanced radiation protection applications.
