- MakaleAçık Erişim2015Scopus SJRQ2Automatic classification of harmonic data using k-means and least square support vector machine
Eristi, Huseyin; Tümen, Vedat; Yildirim, Ozal; Eristi, Belkis; Demir, Yakup
In this paper, an effective classification approach to classify harmonic data has been proposed. In the proposed classifier approach, harmonic data obtained through a 3-phase system have been classified by using k-means and least square support vector machine (LS-SVM) models. In order to obtain class details regarding harmonic data, a k-means clustering algorithm has been applied to these data first. The training of the LS-SVM model has been realized with the class details obtained through the k-means algorithm. To increase the efficiency of the LS-SVM model, the regularization and kernel parameters of this model have been determined with a grid search method and the training phase has been realized. Backpropagation neural network and J48 decision tree classifiers have been applied to the same data and results have been obtained for the purpose of comparing the performance of the LS-SVM model. The real data obtained from the output of distribution system have been used to assess the performance of the proposed classifier system. The obtained results and comparisons suggest that the proposed classifier system approach is quite efficient at classifying harmonic data.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2015Scopus SJRQ1Classification of Kashar Cheeses Based on Their Chemical, Color and Instrumental Textural Characteristics Using Principal Component and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis
Eroglu, Ali; Dogan, Mahmut; Toker, Omer Said; Yilmaz, Mustafa Tahsin
Principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis were applied to investigate physicochemical and instrumental textural properties of fresh kashar cheese. Four different principal components sufficiently explained the variability in the cheese samples. In addition, hierarchical cluster analysis was performed to group the kashar cheese samples regarding physicochemical and instrumental textural properties. Instrumental textural properties indicated greater variability than chemical composition of cheese samples. Principal component analysis revealed that color parameters were positively correlated with textural and chemical parameters. The results of this study revealed that other parameters rather than chemical composition would be effective on the instrumental textural properties. It was proved that principal component analysis was a very effective statistical tool to determine quality of cheese samples. According to the principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis results, the attributes defining the kashar cheese samples were determined to be primarily the texture profile analysis parameters.

Albayrak, S.; Cinar, A. E. Korkmaz; Paksoy, M. Y.; Aksoy, A.
The antioxidant activities of methanol (ME), ethanol (EE), water (WE) and ethyl acetate (EAE) extracts of four Inula helenium L. taxa (I. helenium ssp. orygalis (Boiss.) Grierson, I. helenium ssp. pseudohelenium Grierson, I. helenium ssp. turcarasemosa Grierson and I. helenium ssp. vanensis Grierson) were investigated. The phosphomolybdenum assay, beta-carotene linoleate bleaching and DPPH radical scavenging activity were used to evaluate the antioxidant capacity. The total phenolic contents determined by Folin-Ciocalteu assay of the extracts ranged from 4.18 to 102.91 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g dry extract. The extracts showed considerable effect on reducing the oxidation of beta-carotene. The highest radical scavenging activity was obtained for ME of I. helenium ssp. orygalis in DPPH assay. ME, EE and EAE of four Inula helenium taxa showed significant antibacterial activity against 13 bacteria tested. WEs had no inhibitory effect against bacteria tested except for I. helenium ssp. orygalis. EE of I. helenium ssp. orygalis was only effective against C. albicans.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2015Scopus SJRQ2An Effective Schema for Solving Some Nonlinear Partial Differential Equation Arising In Nonlinear Physics
Baskonus, Haci Mehmet; Bulut, Hasan
In this paper, a new computational algorithm called the Improved Bernoulli sub-equation function method has been proposed. This algorithm is based on the Bernoulli Sub-ODE method. Firstly, the nonlinear evaluation equations used for representing various physical phenomena are converted into ordinary differential equations by using various wave transformations. In this way, nonlinearity is preserved and represent nonlinear physical problems. The nonlinearity of physical problems together with the derivations is seen as the secret key to solve the general structure of problems. The proposed analytical schema, which is newly submitted to the literature, has been expressed comprehensively in this paper. The analytical solutions, application results, and comparisons are presented by plotting the two and three dimensional surfaces of analytical solutions obtained by using the methods proposed for some important nonlinear physical problems. Finally, a conclusion has been presented by mentioning the important discoveries in this study.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2015Scopus SJRQ2The in vitro effect of Lambda-cyhalothrin on quality and antioxidant responses of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss spermatozoa
Kutluyer, Filiz; Erisir, Mine; Benzer, Fulya; Ögretmen, Fatih; Inanan, Burak Evren
There is little information in the scientific literature about effect of in vitro exposure of fish spermatozoa to pesticides. In vitro effect of Lambda-cyhalothrin (La) on sperm quality and oxidative stress has not been fully explored yet. The effects of LCT, which is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide, on quality and oxidative stress of spermatozoa were investigated in vitro due to extensively use to control a wide range of insect pests in agriculture, public health, and homes and gardens. To explore the potential in vitro toxicity of La, fish spermatozoa were incubated with different concentrations of LCT (0.6, 1.2 and 2.4 mu g/L) for 2 h. Reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in spermatozoa were analyzed for determination of oxidant and antioxidant balance. Our results indicated that the percentage and duration of sperm motility significantly decreased with exposure to LCT. Activity of GSH-Px and MDA (P < 0.05) and GSH levels (P < 0.05) increased in a concentration-dependent manner while CAT activity decreased (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the oxidant and antioxidant status and sperm quality were affected by increasing concentrations of LCT. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2015Scopus SJRQ2Influence of Alpha and Gamma-Iron Oxide Nanoparticles on Marine Microalgae Species
Demir, Veysel; Ates, Mehmet; Arslan, Zikri; Camas, Mustafa; Celik, Fatih; Bogatu, Corneliu; Can, Safak Seyhaneyildiz
The effects of alpha-iron oxide (alpha-Fe2O3) and gamma-iron oxide (gamma-Fe2O3) nanoparticles (NPs) on marine microalgae species (Nannochloropsis sp. and Isochrysis sp.) were investigated in this study. Both Fe2O3 NPs covered the surface of algae with the agglomerates of the nanoparticles. This form of physical NP toxicity significantly decreased the sizes of phytoplankton. Both NPs were toxic to the tested algal species, while alpha-Fe2O3 showed less toxicity than gamma-Fe2O3 NPs for both algal species. A comparative analysis of growth data of the two algal species treated with alpha-Fe2O3 or gamma-Fe2O3 NPs revealed that Isochrysis sp. are more sensitive than Nannochloropsis sp. Toxicity of these widely used NPs to primary producers forming the base of the food chain in aquatic environments might result in widespread adverse effects on aquatic environmental health.

Adiguzel, Ragip; Gunduz, Bayram; Turan, Nevin; Topcu, Yildiray
We investigated the optical properties and the transmittance characterizations of the stock solutions of the Co (II) and Ni(II) complexes of Saccharin and determined the molar extinction coefficients at different molarity. The molar extinction coefficients (epsilon) values of the Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes in the first region decrease with increasing molarity, and the e values of the Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes at lower wavelength are higher than that of the values at higher wavelength. The absorption band edge values of the Co(II) complex shift from 3.584 to 3.139 eV with the increasing molarity, while the absorption band edge values of the Ni(II) complex shift from 3.574 to 3.493 eV with the increasing molarity. The plots of refractive index of the Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes consist of two anomalous (abnormal) dispersion regions and one normal dispersion region. The direct energy-gap of the Co(II) complex can be more decreased with molarity. The absorbance, molar extinction coefficients, refractive index values of the Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes decrease, while the average transmittance in the visible region, direct optical band-gap values of the Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes increase with increasing volume of DMF solvent or decreasing volume of the solutions of the Coal) and Ni(II) complexes.

Ethnopharmacological relevance: This paper provides significant ethnobotanical information on medicinal plants in Espiye in the Black Sea Region. Recording such data calls for urgency. This is the first ethnobotanical study in which statistical calculations about plants are carried out by means of FIC method in Northern (Espiye-Giresun) part of Turkey. This study aims to identify the wild plants collected for medicinal purposes by locals of Espiye which is located in the Black Sea Region of Turkey, and to identify the uses and local names of these wild plants. Materials and methods: A field study had been carried out for a period of approximately 2 years (20122014). During this period, information about medicinal use of 55 wild and 15 cultivated plants were collected. Demographic characteristics of participants, names of the local plants, their utilized parts and preparation methods were investigated and recorded. Through face-to-face interviews, we identified and recorded demographic characteristics of the respondents. We interviewed 128 persons who are over the age of 29. The plant taxa were collected within the scope of the study; and herbarium materials were prepared. In addition, the relative significance value of the taxa was determined, and informant consensus factor (FIC) was calculated for the medicinal plants included in the study. Results: We have found out in the literature review of the plants included in our study that 70 plant taxa are already used for medicinal purposes while 3 plants are not available among the records in the literature. The most common families are Asteraceae, Rosaceae, Lamiaceae, Malvaceae, and Ericaceae. We include in our study and report for the first time the medicinal uses of Alchemilla crinita Buser, Stachys sylvatica L., and Thymus leucotrichus Hal. var. leucotrichus Hal. Names of local plants in Turkey vary especially due to vernaculars. The plants that the locals of Espiye use are called with the same or different local names in various parts of Anatolia. Conclusion: We found out that locals living in the research area use for therapeutic purpose 70 plants taxa which belong to 36 families. Turkish citizens with different ethnic backgrounds took the questionnaire. These people use these wild plants in treatment of several diseases. Comparison of the data obtained in this study with the experimental data obtained in the previous laboratory studies on the wild plants which grow in Espiye proved ethnobotanical usages to a great extent. Literature review indicated that the therapeutic plants that grow in Espiye are used in different parts of the world for the treatment of similar diseases. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. - MakaleAçık Erişim2015Scopus SJRQ2Accumulation and Toxicity of CuO and ZnO Nanoparticles Through Waterborne and Dietary Exposure of Goldfish (Carassius auratus)
Ates, Mehmet; Arslan, Zikri; Demir, Veysel; Daniels, James; Farah, Ibrahim O.
Dietary and waterborne exposure to copper oxide (CuO) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) was conducted using a simplified model of an aquatic food chain consisting of zooplankton (Artemia salina) and goldfish (Carassius auratus) to determine bioaccumulation, toxic effects, and particle transport through trophic levels. Artemia contaminated with NPs were used as food in dietary exposure. Fish were exposed to suspensions of the NPs in waterborne exposure. ICP-MS analysis showed that accumulation primarily occurred in the intestine, followed by the gills and liver. Dietary uptake was lower, but was found to be a potential pathway for transport of NPs to higher organisms. Waterborne exposure resulted in about a 10-fold higher accumulation in the intestine. The heart, brain, and muscle tissue had no significant Cu or Zn. However, concentrations in muscle increased with NP concentration, which was ascribed to bioaccumulation of Cu and Zn released from NPs. Free Cu concentration in the medium was always higher than that of Zn, indicating CuO NPs dissolved more readily. ZnO NPs were relatively benign, even in waterborne exposure (p0.05). In contrast, CuO NPs were toxic. Malondialdehyde levels in the liver and gills increased substantially (p<0.05). Despite lower Cu accumulation, the liver exhibited significant oxidative stress, which could be from chronic exposure to Cu ions. (c) 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Environ Toxicol 30: 119-128, 2015.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2015Scopus SJRQ1Comparison of effects of mild heat combined with lactic acid on Shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli O157:H7, O103, O111, O145 and O26 inoculated to spinach and soybean sprout
Dikici, Abdullah; Koluman, Ahmet; Calicioglu, Mehmet
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of lactic acid against Shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli (O157:1-17 and non-O157 serogroups including O103, O111, O145 and O26) at different conditions. Soybean sprouts and spinach leaves inoculated with each serogroup of E. coli (similar to 7.00 + 1.00 log(10) cfu/g) were treated with the lactic acid solutions at different concentrations (0% (control), 1.5%, 2.0%, or 2.5%) and at different temperatures (20, 40, or 50 degrees C) for 3 min. Results indicated that regardless of the treatment temperature, no significant reduction in the numbers of any serogroup occurred in the control group (0%) (p > 0.05). However, lactic acid at concentration of 1.5%, 2% and 2.5% was found to be effective against all organisms tested. There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) between E. coli O157:H7 and non-O157 STEC serogroups at any treatment group. The highest reductions (ca. 400 log(10) cfu/g) of all serotypes in both produces were observed after immersing into 2.5% lactic acid at 50 degrees C. The results of this study showed that decontamination of fresh produces such as spinach and soybean sprout with lactic acid solutions prepared at mild temperatures (40 degrees C and 50 degrees C) might be an effective safety measure in preventing public health risks associated with these products contaminated with STEC. Ates, Mehmet; Demir, Veysel; Arslan, Zikri; Daniels, James; Farah, Ibrahim O.; Bogatu, Corneliu
In this study, Artemia salina (crustacean filter feeders) larvae were used as a test model to investigate the toxicity of aluminum oxide nanoparticles (Al2O3 NPs) on marine microorganisms. The uptake, toxicity, and elimination of -Al2O3 (50 nm and 3.5 m) and -Al2O3 (5 nm and 0.4 m) NPs were studied. Twenty-four and ninety-six hour exposures of different concentrations of Al2O3 NPs to Artemia larvae were conducted in a seawater medium. When suspended in water, Al2O3 NPs aggregated substantially with the sizes ranging from 6.3 nm to >0.3 mu m for spherical NPs and from 250 to 756 nm for rod-shaped NPs. The phase contrast microscope images showed that NPs deposited inside the guts as aggregates. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis showed that large particles (3.5 m -Al2O3) were not taken up by Artemia, whereas fine NPs (0.4 m -Al2O3) and ultra-fine NPs (5 nm -Al2O3 and 50 nm -Al2O3) accumulated substantially. Differences in toxicity were detected as changing with NP size and morphology. The malondialdehyde levels indicated that smaller -Al2O3 (5 nm) NPs were more toxic than larger -Al2O3 (0.4 mu m) particulates in 96 h. The highest mortality was measured as 34% in 96 h for -Al2O3 NPs (5 nm) at 100 mg/L (LC50 > 100 mg/L). -Al2O3 NPs were more toxic than -Al2O3 NPs at all conditions. (c) 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Trichlorfon is among the most commonly used products to treat fish parasites in aquaculture. We investigated the effectiveness of propolis in alleviating the toxicity of trichlorfon on haematological and oxidant/antioxidant parameters in carp Cyprinus carpio. Fish were exposed to sublethal concentrations (11 and 22 mg l(-1)) of trichlorfon, and propolis (10 mg kg(-1) of fish weight) was simultaneously administered. At the end of 14 d administration, blood and tissue (liver, kidney, gill) samples were collected. Haematological changes (red and white blood cell count, haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit level and erythrocyte indices: mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration) were determined in the blood samples, while antioxidant parameters (malondialdehyde and reduced glutathione levels and superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities) were evaluated in the liver, kidney and gill samples. Trichlorfon led to negative alterations in the haematological and antioxidant parameters investigated. The administration of propolis alleviated this effect and suggests that fish treated with trichlorfon improve their physiological status when fed a propolis-supplemented diet.

- MakaleYalnız künye2015Scopus SJRQ3A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE EFFECTS OF LEAD AND ZEOLITE ON SERUM BIOCHEMISTRY OF CARP FISH, Cyprinus Carpio Linnaeus, 1758 (Cyprinidae)
Mutlu, Ekrem; Demir, Tugba; Kutlu, Bann
One of the pollutants leading to heavy metal pollution is the lead element. The studies on exposure of fish to lead have shown that this exposure leads to negative effects on body weight, and digestive enzymes and lipase. In humans, the symptoms of chronic lead toxicity are renal malfunction, anemia, brain and liver damage, cancer, hyperactivity, and general psychological impairment. For struggling with this heavy metal contamination, we have a useful tool named Zeolite. Zeolites are used in many fields such as agriculture, metal industry, energy sector, manufacturing industry, water treatment, animal husbandry, struggling with environmental pollution, and etc. In this study, we utilized the biochemical parameters of carp fish (Cyprinus carpio) in order to reveal the effects of zeolite on fish health and production. The experiments were performed within 100 L glass aquariums with 85x40x30 dimensions. The study was planned for 3 different durations as 35 days, 90 days, and 120 days. The subjects were divided into 4 groups for each of experiment durations. The groups were named Pb(NO3)(2) group, Pb(NO3)(2) + Zeolite group, Zeolite group, and control group. At the end of each of the experiment period (on 35(th), 90(th), and 120(th) days), the fish in groups were weighed, and the average growth rates of each of the groups were calculated. The parameters used in blood analyses are glucose (GLU), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), total protein (TP), albumin (ALB), globulin (GLB), creatinine (CR), total bilirubin (TBIL), uric acid ([JA), and direct bilirubin (DBlL).
