Happiness and Psychological Well-Being Among Fathers of Young Children: Evidence From Tunceli, Turkey

    Şen Montazerirad, Buket; Yeşiltepe, Akgün

Fatherhood significantly influences psychological well-being and happiness, yet fathers particularly of young children are underrepresented in research. This study examines the relationship between happiness and psychological well-being in this group. This study aims to explore the relationship between happiness and psychological well-being among fathers of children in early childhood. A descriptive-correlational study was conducted with data collected online using validated self-report questionnaires on demographic characteristics, happiness, and psychological well-being from 257 participants. A statistically significant, strong, and positive relationship was found between happiness and psychological well-being (r = 0.626, p = 0.000). Regression analysis revealed that happiness explained 39.2% of the variance in psychological well-being and was a significant predictor (R2 = 0.392). Each unit increase in psychological well-being was associated with a 0.794-unit increase in happiness (β = 0.794; p < 0.05). Fathers’ happiness is a key determinant of their psychological well-being and psychosocial interventions targeting fathers may enhance both paternal and child well-being.

Antioxidant capacity and α-glucosidase inhibitor activity of Bryonia aspera extracts and its major constituent p-coumaric acid: Phytochemical analysis, biological evaluation and computational approach

Tuncay, Salih; Karasakal, Ömer Faruk; Açar, Mikail; Toptancı, İsra; Şenol, Halil; Çırak, Olgun; Işık, Mesut; Beydemir, Şükrü

This study comprehensively investigated the phenolic composition, antioxidant potential, and α-glucosidase inhibitory properties of B. aspera Steven ex Ledeb. extracts using integrated in vitro and in silico approaches. LC-MS/MS analysis identified seven major phenolic compounds, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, galangin, gallic acid, naringenin, p-coumaric acid, and rutin, with p-coumaric acid being the most abundant (306.71 mg/kg in aerial and 155.56 mg/kg in root extracts). Both extracts exhibited strong antioxidant and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities, particularly the aerial extract (IC50 = 0.678 and 0.173 for DPPH, ABTS, respectively and 0.022 mg/mL for α-glucosidase inhibition). Molecular docking and MM-GBSA analyses supported these findings, showing that p-coumaric acid had the strongest binding to α-glucosidase (–7.783 kcal/mol, ΔG = –47.76 kcal/mol), stabilized by key interactions with Asp-62, Arg-200, His-332, and Arg-400. A 250 ns molecular dynamics simulation confirmed the stability of the complex, and in silico ADME analysis revealed good oral absorption (67%) and compliance with Lipinski’s rule. Overall, results indicate that p-coumaric acid is the primary bioactive compound contributing to the antioxidant and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of B. aspera, with promising potential as a natural lead for α-glucosidase inhibition.

Smart logistics with a maturity assessment perspective

    Göçmen Polat, Elifcan; Derse, Onur

The logistics sector is influenced by digitalisation and technological advancement in improving sustainability and efficiency. Logistics companies, which are highly capable of incorporating innovative technologies into their business flows, have made profound impacts, ultimately leading to a transformation in logistics services. In this context, this study presents the current and target maturity levels to make an international logistics company smarter and provides recommendations as an improvement road map for the logistics sector. Within the scope of this research, nine dimensions and 36 maturity items of the smart logistics (SL) concept are discussed to assess the maturity levels using the weighted maturity score calculation model (WMSC), in which evaluation of all maturity items using the capability maturity model (CMM) maturity levels and calculation of the criteria weights using fuzzy DEMATEL (F-DEMATEL) is integrated. Computational results show that warehouse management systems and material flow control systems have lower maturity levels. Thus, product picking by voice, integrating the warehouse management system, ensures real-time updates and data integration, reducing stockouts and overstock.

The microbiological and sensory quality of fish (Cyprinus carpio) meatballs prepared with different essential oils; [La calidad microbiológica y sensorial de las albóndigas de pescado (Cyprinus carpio) elaboradas con diferentes aceites esenciales]

    KARATON-KUZGUN, Nermin; ȘAHÎN, Seher

In this study, the shelf life of fish meatballs made from common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and flavoured with lemon, ginger and mint essential oils was investigated under refrigeration conditions (4 ± 1 °C). In the study, fish mince obtained from common carp was mixed with breadcrumbs, cumin, salt, black pepper, allspice, garlic powder, sweet paprika and sunflower oil to form the experimental control group, whilst the remaining fish mince was mixed with essential oils to form four different groups. The fish meatballs were stored under refrigeration conditions, and microbiological and sensory analyses were conducted on the analysis days. As a result of these analyses, the shelf life of the fish meatballs was determined to be 20 days. Microbiologically, the limit value (6 log CFU/g) for total mesophilic aerobic bacteria was exceeded in Group control patty samples on the 10th day of storage, in Group ginger and mint patty samples on the 15th day, and in Group lemon patty samples on the 20th day. The evaluation of sensory analyses also revealed that the group of fish cake samples receiving the highest sensory approval was the group to which lemon essential oil had been added. It was concluded that offering fish-based meatballs created by adding essential oils which are natural additives in a variety of flavours would broaden the product range, further encourage consumption, and contribute to the shelf life of the resulting products.

Comparative Microstructural, Mechanical, and Tribological Evaluation of Cu Matrix Composites Reinforced with B4C, B, Cr, Co, Al2O3, and Graphite via Powder Metallurgy

Macit, Cevher Kursat; Gürgenç, Turan; Aksakal, Bunyamin; Aslan, Naim

Copper and its alloys are widely used in electrical, automotive, aerospace, and energy applications because of their excellent thermal and electrical conductivity. However, the low hardness and poor wear resistance of pure Cu limit its use under tribologically demanding sliding conditions. In this study, Cu matrix composites reinforced with 1 wt.% boron carbide (B4C), boron (B), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), alumina (Al2O3), and graphite (Gr) were fabricated by powder metallurgy and comparatively evaluated under identical processing and testing conditions. Phase constitution and microstructural characteristics were analyzed by XRD, SEM, and EDS, while mechanical and tribological behavior was assessed by Vickers hardness and dry sliding wear tests. All reinforcements improved the hardness of the Cu matrix compared with unreinforced Cu. The hardness increase followed the order Cu–B4C (68.91%) > Cu–B (66.43%) > Cu–Gr (63.97%) > Cu–Al2O3 (61.79%) > Cu–Cr (42.69%) > Cu–Co (36.04%). Dry sliding wear tests, performed under a 10 N normal load, 0.05 m s−1 sliding speed, and 1000 m sliding distance against a 316L stainless-steel ball, showed that all reinforced composites exhibited lower mass loss and more stable sliding behavior than pure Cu. Among all samples, Cu–B4C displayed the best wear performance, with a 154.8% improvement in wear resistance relative to pure Cu. SEM analysis of the worn surfaces revealed that reinforcement addition reduced severe plastic deformation, groove formation, and delamination, leading to a more stable wear regime. Graphite- and boron-containing composites benefited from interfacial lubrication and contact stabilization, whereas B4C and Al2O3 improved wear resistance through rigid-particle strengthening and enhanced load-bearing capacity. By comparing ceramic, metalloid, metallic, oxide, and solid-lubricating reinforcements at the same low addition level and under identical processing and testing conditions, this study provides a reinforcement-selection framework for Cu-based composites requiring improved hardness and dry-sliding durability.

A Strategic Pre-Mechanical Activation Approach for Reducing Acid Consumption and Ion Release on Acid Leaching of Lithium-Bearing Clays

Boylu, Feridun; Obuz Teker, Gülsen; Ersever Angur, Gafure; Özdemir, Orhan; Güven, Onur; Celik, Mehmet S.

The increasing demand for lithium and the limited availability of high-grade resources have accelerated interest in lithium-bearing clays as a promising alternative, despite their relatively lower lithium content. Lithium extraction from such clay minerals typically requires thermal treatment or acid leaching to disrupt the clay crystal lattice and enhance lithium solubility. The enrichment tailings from the Kırka Boron Processing Plant in Türkiye consist predominantly of dolomite-rich clay minerals and contain approximately 900–1200 ppm Li. Considering the substantial quantities of these tailings currently stored on-site, recovering lithium and converting these materials into a valuable resource would be of significant economic importance. However, due to their mineralogical composition, conventional acid leaching of these tailings demands relatively high sulfuric acid consumption (1.5–2.0 M H2SO4). This leads to excessively low solution pH and the generation of highly acidic waste streams, while also promoting the co-dissolution of iron (Fe) and aluminum (Al) ions at pH levels below 2, which negatively affects lithium recovery and downstream processing. In this study, mechanical activation was applied to the tailings prior to acid leaching. As a result, the acid requirement to achieve lithium extraction efficiencies of 90% and above was successfully reduced from 1.5 M to 1.0 M H2SO4. Moreover, solution pH was maintained near neutral (~7), and the undesirable dissolution of Fe and Al ions was effectively suppressed and kept under control.

The impact of narcissistic personality traits on social media interaction and body image: individual and team athletes

Kiliç, Kübra; Sezer, Burcu Sıla; Aydinli, İbrahim; Tutar, Ömer Faruk; Kiliç, Yakup

Introduction – The aim of this study is to examine the effect of narcissistic personality traits on body image through social media interaction and to comparatively evaluate these relationships in the context of athletes engaged in individual and team sports. Methods – The research group consisted of a total of 389 athletes, namely 158 female (age = 21.53 ± 3.16; years of sports experiences = 5.56 ± 4.17) and 231 male (age = 23.00 ± 5.09; years of sports experience = 8.28 ± 5.44) athletes, all residing in the Eastern Anatolia region and having a sports background. A personal information form, the “Narcissism on Social Media Scale, ” and the “Body Image Scale” were used as data collection tools. Analysis of the obtained data revealed a normal distribution; therefore, t-tests were used to compare two groups, ANOVA for comparisons of two variables, Pearson Correlation to evaluate relationships between parameters, and regression analysis to determine the effect. Results – As a result of the analyses, no significant difference was observed in terms of the type of sport variable. The study found that, among athletes engaged in individual sports, body image levels were higher in males compared to females and, in individual athletes, the narcissistic rivalry dimension was more prevalent in athletes who used social media for 5 h or more compared to those using it for less than 1 h. Multiple correlation analysis revealed no significant relationship between scale dimensions and years of sports experience. Regression analysis showed that body image level had a low but significant effect on narcissistic admiration and narcissistic rivalry. Conclusion – In conclusion, it was determined that athletes in individual sports are sensitive to demographic variables, and that the duration of social media use, in particular, is a factor that increases narcissistic competitive tendencies. The fact that years of sports experience and type of sport did not make a difference suggests that the dimensions used are shaped more by current psychosocial interactions. Indeed, the regression analysis also shows that the relationship between body image and narcissistic admiration and competition points to a weak but significant psychological interaction network.

Positive body image is a pathway between nature contact and life satisfaction across 58 nations

Swami, Viren; Voracek, Martin; Stieger, Stefan; Aavik, Toivo; Ranjbar, Hamed Abdollahpour; Adebayo, Sulaiman Olanrewaju; Afhami, Reza; Ahmed, Oli; Aimé, Annie; Akel, Marwan

Time spent in nature benefits human mental and physical well-being. However, much of the variance in outcomes of nature contact remains unexplained, suggesting that new mechanistic pathways need to be considered. Here, we tested a novel conceptual model linking nature contact with life satisfaction via pathways involving positive experiences of living in and experiencing the world through the physical self. Using data from the Body Image in Nature Survey (BINS; N = 50,363), representing respondents from 58 nations and speaking 36 different languages, we find that nature contact is associated with greater self-compassion and greater perceived restoration in nature, which in turn are associated with more positive body image. In addition, more positive body image is associated with greater life satisfaction. These associations were robust to sensitivity tests, generalised to all gender identities and age groups, and held individually in almost all national groups and languages. Although replications are needed, we propose that the materialities of natural environments help to link bodily experiences to the production and experience of well-being, a process that is largely stable across national groups.

The relationship between muscle strength and oxygenation and activities of daily living in adolescents and young adults with pulmonary arterial hypertension

Dik, Jan; Topcuoglu, Ceyhun; Vardar-Yagli, Naciye; Goksuluk, Merve Basol; Aypar, Ebru; Alehan, Dursun; Saglam, Melda

Pulmonary arterial hypertension leads to dyspnoea, fatigue, and oxygen desaturation, limiting activities of daily living and functional capacity. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of pulmonary arterial hypertension on activities of daily living performance, functional capacity, peripheral muscle strength, oxygen dynamics, and energy expenditure. Eighteen adolescents and young adults with pulmonary arterial hypertension (10 females, 8 males; age 9–30 years) and 15 healthy controls (10 males, 5 females; age 9–30 years) were included. Peripheral muscle strength was assessed using a handheld dynamometer, functional capacity via the 6-minute walk test, and muscle oxygenation through near-infrared spectroscopy. Lower-limb endurance was evaluated with the 1-minute sit-to-stand test and activities of daily living performance with the Glittre Activities of Daily Living test. Compared to controls, the pulmonary arterial hypertension group had significantly lower 6-minute walk test distance (441.9 m versus 636.9 m; p < 0.001), reduced sit-to-stand repetitions (28 versus 42.1; p < 0.001), weaker peripheral strength, and lower minimum muscle oxygen saturation (24.9% versus 51.8%; p < 0.001). Glittre Activities of Daily Living test duration was longer (143 s versus 105 s; p < 0.001), with greater oxygen desaturation (−13% versus −1%; p < 0.001), higher dyspnoea scores using modified Borg scale (5 versus 1; p < 0.001), and blunted heart rate response (ΔHR [change in heart rate]: 32 versus 64; p = 0.011). These findings demonstrate that pulmonary arterial hypertension significantly impairs both cardiopulmonary and peripheral muscle function. Protecting muscle health and improving functional capacity should be prioritised to enhance quality of life in this population.

This study explores the physical, structural, and radiation shielding enhancements in Inconel 718 superalloys reinforced with 1 wt% Y2O3 and varying Pr2O3 contents from 0 to 10 wt%, respectively. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed preservation of the face-centered cubic structure, with increasing Pr2O3 inducing peak broadening and partial amorphization. The scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy results verified the homogeneous dispersion of oxides without agglomeration. Gamma-ray shielding parameters, including the mass attenuation coefficient (MAC), half-value layer, and effective atomic number, significantly improved with higher Pr2O3 content, particularly at low to mid photon energies. The 718Y-10PO sample exhibited the lowest transmission factors and the highest MAC values across all the tested energies. Buildup factors decreased in the Pr-rich samples, confirming reduced photon scattering. Notably, the fast neutron removal cross section for 718Y-10PO as 0.15521 cm−1 exceeded the benchmark materials like graphite and B4C. These findings establish the 718Y-10PO alloy as a promising candidate for advanced nuclear shielding applications, combining structural integrity with promising gamma and neutron attenuation capabilities.

Synthesis, structural characterization, and radiation interaction behaviour of (ErSmGdYPr)2Hf2O7 high-entropy oxide powder: A preliminary investigation for potential applications in nuclear environments

Güler, Ömer; Güler, Seval Hale; Özkul, İskender; ALMisned, Ghada; Baykal, Duygu Sen; Tekin, Huseyin Ozan

This study represents an initial investigation toward exploring the multifunctional potential of the (ErSmGdYPr)2Hf2O7 high-entropy oxide as a thermal barrier coating (TBC) material in radiation environments. Therefore, the evaluated parameters should be considered as a preliminary step rather than a complete representation of the material’s overall performance in such complex applications. In this context, (ErSmGdYPr)₂Hf2O7 powders were synthesized through high-energy ball milling of commercial rare-earth oxide precursors followed by calcination at different temperatures. Structural evolution during synthesis was investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and thermal analysis techniques. The results confirmed the formation of a defective fluorite-type high-entropy oxide structure after calcination at elevated temperatures, accompanied by homogeneous elemental distribution and stable ceramic microstructures. In addition to structural characterization, the radiation interaction behaviour of the synthesized material was evaluated through gamma-ray attenuation parameters and fast neutron removal cross-section analysis. The obtained results indicate that the presence of multiple rare-earth elements provides favorable interaction characteristics with both photons and fast neutrons. These findings highlight the potential of this high-entropy oxide as a precursor for multifunctional coating materials. However, it should be noted that this work represents a preliminary powder-level investigation, and further research on actual coating deposition and thermal testing is required to validate its service performance.

Phytoremediation of elements in municipal wastewater treatment plant effluent by Lemna gibba L.: a full-scale study

Topal, Murat; Öbek, Erdal; Çelik, Erdal; Arslan Topal, E. Işıl

In this study, capacity of naturally growing Lemna gibba L. in removing elements (B, As, Al, Ca, Ba, Co, Fe, Cu, K, Cr, Li, Mo, Ni, Mn, Na, Mg, Sb, P, Si, Pb, Se, Ti, Zn, V, and Sr) from the effluent of secondary clarifier of a municipal wastewater treatment plant (MWWTP) was determined week by week (W1, W2, W3, and W4) and analyzed as a whole using statistical models. To determine the removal contribution of Lemna gibba L. to the MWWTP effluent, secondary clarifier without Lemna gibba L. was used as a control. The aim here is to determine the contribution of Lemna gibba L. to MWWTP’s removal efficiency. Trace elemental quantification was conducted via validated ICP-MS following microwave-assisted acid digestion. In this context, according to the analysis results, the removal efficiency of Lemna gibba L. for Al was highest at 89.66% over the weeks. Furthermore, treatment efficiencies above 50% were achieved for Co (57.86–60.61%), Sb (64.25–67.35%), and Ti (63.27–66.21%). Based on statistical analyses, PCA (principal component analysis)) and HCA (hierarchical cluster analysis) models explained 85% of the total variance. As a result, this study demonstrated that Lemna gibba L. removes elements from MWWTP effluent, contributing to the removal efficiency of the secondary clarifier and clearly showing its potential use in phytoremediation.

From trash to technology: Ai-driven waste classification with hybrid CNN-transformer approach for sustainable recycling

    Utku, Anil

The increasing amount of waste globally requires more efficient recycling processes and increases the importance of intelligent, automatic classification systems. Since traditional waste separation methods are time-consuming and have high error rates, artificial intelligence-based solutions have great potential in this area. In this study, the effectiveness of deep learning-based waste classification models was investigated, and nine different waste types were classified using DenseNet121, EfficientNetB0, ResNet50, ViT, DenseNet121-ViT, EfficientNetB0-ViT, ResNet50-ViT. Experimental results show that hybrid CNN-ViT models achieved the highest accuracy rates. Mainly, the EfficientNetB0-ViT model exhibited the best performance with a 95% accuracy rate and made a balanced classification for all waste types. The model can optimize recycling processes by ensuring the correct separation of wastes and contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing misclassification. Artificial intelligence-supported waste management systems offer an effective solution in critical areas such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, saving energy, and supporting environmentally friendly urban planning. The findings of this study reveal that deep learning-based artificial intelligence models are an important tool for sustainable environmental management.

Optimization of native plant selection for phytomining of strategic/critical raw materials using Artificial Bee Colony algorithm

Arslan Topal, E. Işıl; Topal, Murat; Çelik, Erdal; Öbek, Erdal

This study investigates the potential of native plant species (NPs) as secondary sources for strategic/critical raw materials (SCRMs) through phytomining, aiming to identify the most efficient accumulator for sustainable element recovery. To achieve high-precision results, the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm, a robust meta-heuristic optimization technique inspired by the foraging behavior of honeybees, was utilized to minimize the error between experimental data and predicted models to optimize the accumulation of key elements including cobalt (Co), strontium (Sr), antimony (Sb), vanadium (V), phosphorus (P), lanthanum (La), magnesium (Mg), titanium (Ti), aluminum (Al), and scandium (Sc). The research focused on three NP species—Musk thistle (MT), curly dock (CD), and Juncus (JS)—collected from a geothermal hot spring area. Methodological validation was performed through comparative statistical analysis and the calculation of bioconcentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) to assess phytoremediation efficiency. The ABC optimization results revealed that MT exhibited the most significant accumulation capacity, particularly for Mg, reaching a peak concentration of 3,910 mg/kgdw in the leaves. The concentration range (lowest to highest value) was between 0.01 (for La) and 3,910 mg/kgdw for the studied plants. Principal component analysis (PCA) corroborated these findings, explaining cumulative variances of 80.4% (MT), 89.4% (CD), and 76.4% (JS). The innovation of this study lies in the application of the ABC algorithm to the field of phytomining, which offers a more dynamic and flexible alternative to traditional regression-based models. The primary advantage of this proposed method is its superior global search capability and ability to handle multi-elemental interactions with high predictive accuracy. However, a potential disadvantage remains the computational complexity and the requirement for fine-tuning control parameters to ensure consistent convergence. Overall, MT is identified as a highly promising candidate for the phytomining of SCRMs, with Mg emerging as the most effectively accumulated element under the optimized ABC model.

Compositional control of structural, magnetic, and gamma-ray attenuation properties in rare-earth substituted Ho-based double perovskite oxides synthesized via mechanical alloying and oxidation

Özkul, İskender; Kalay, Ece; Güler, Seval Hale; Karaduman, Oktay; Şimşek, Telem; Bülbül, Zeynel Abidin; Aksu Canbay, Canan; Sen Baykal, Duygu; ALMisned, Ghada; Tekin, H.O.

Rare-earth substitution provides a route for tailoring the structural, magnetic, and gamma-ray attenuation behaviour of Ho-based Co-Mn double perovskites; however, the combined effects of rare-earth ionic size, magnetic character, and substitution level remain insufficiently understood. In this study, Ho1.5La0.5CoMnO6, Ho1.2Er0.8CoMnO6, Ho1.3Sm0.7CoMnO6, and Ho2CoMnO6 were synthesized through a two-step route involving mechanical alloying to obtain precursor powders, followed by annealing at 1000 °C in air to promote oxidation and double-perovskite phase formation. Their structural, thermal, surface-chemical, magnetic, and gamma-ray attenuation properties were examined by X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, SEM-EDS, vibrating-sample magnetometry, and theoretical shielding calculations based on half-value layer (HVL) and transmission factor (TF) parameters. The XRD patterns were consistent with predominantly monoclinic P21/n type double-perovskite structures, while weak additional reflections suggested possible minor secondary phases. SEM-EDS showed homogeneous elemental distributions, and XPS analysis indicated Co2+ dominated and mixed Mn-valence characteristics in the spectra where reliable component analysis was possible. All compositions exhibited a low-temperature ferromagnetic-like field response but did not reach magnetic saturation at 3 T. Ho2CoMnO6 and Ho1.3Sm0.7CoMnO6 showed the highest field-dependent magnetization values at 10 K, whereas Ho1.2Er0.8CoMnO6 displayed the lowest response. The theoretical gamma-ray attenuation calculations showed clear composition-dependent differences. At 0.662 MeV, the HVL values were 1.0650, 0.9972, 1.0438, and 0.9967 cm for Ho1.5La0.5CoMnO6, Ho1.2Er0.8CoMnO6, Ho1.3Sm0.7CoMnO6, and Ho2CoMnO6, respectively. At the same photon energy and a thickness of 1.0 cm, the corresponding TF values were 0.0896, 0.0858, 0.0882, and 0.0860. Thus, Ho1.2Er0.8CoMnO6 and Ho2CoMnO6 exhibited the lowest HVL and TF values among the investigated compositions. The shielding calculations identified Ho1.2Er0.8CoMnO6 and Ho2CoMnO6 as the most effective attenuators, with lower HVL and TF values across the investigated energy range. These results show that rare-earth substitution enables compositional tuning of magnetic and theoretical gamma-ray attenuation behaviour, with the observed trends reflecting the combined influence of rare-earth ionic size, magnetic character, substitution level, and valence-state complexity.

Biochemical effects and theoretical study of a metformin in the carp (Cyprinus carpio) fry

İSPİR, Ünal; Tüzün, Burak; KIRICI, Muammer; Poustforoosh, Alireza; YONAR, Muhammet Enis; YONAR, Serpil MİŞE; ŞEKER, Engin

Pharmaceutical chemicals are frequently detected in wastewater, and metformin, an oral hypoglycemic agent, is among the most common. In this study, the effects of metformin on biochemical (total protein, glycogen, lipid) and antioxidant (malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), glutathione S-transferase (GST), catalase (CAT)) parameters were investigated in carp ( Cyprinus carpio ) fry. Fish were exposed to 40 and 80 µg/L metformin for 96 h, 14 and 21 days. No mortalities occurred in any group. At 80 µg/L for 21 days, total protein activity and lipid levels significantly decreased. Glycogen activity showed no significant differences compared to controls. Antioxidant parameters measured spectrophotometrically revealed that MDA levels, CAT and GST activities decreased with time but increased with dose, while GSH levels rose with time yet decreased with dose. Overall, significant time- and dose-dependent effects ( p < 0.05) were observed. In silico analyses were also performed. The activity of metformin against antioxidant proteins was evaluated, and molecular dynamics simulations confirmed strong interactions with the most active protein. ADME/T analysis provided pharmacokinetic insights, and Gaussian-based quantum chemical calculations (EHOMO, ELUMO, ΔE, dipole, etc.) characterized electronic and structural properties. These combined results indicate that metformin alters key biochemical pathways in carp fry and has significant reactivity toward antioxidant proteins. Findings suggest potential ecotoxicological risks in aquatic systems and relevance to pharmacological profiling.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Lactobacillus leichmannii as a probiotic bacteria, Saccharomyces boulardii as a yeast, and β-glucan as a prebiotic on the binding ability of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and its bioaccessibility in a cereal-based fermented beverage. For this purpose, nine study groups with their combinations were formed. The amount of unbound AFB1 was determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) after incubation and during the stomach, small intestine, and colon stages using an in vitro digestion model. After incubation, the highest percentage of AFB1 binding (27.79%) was obtained with S. boulardii. The lowest bioaccessibility was observed with L. leichmannii + S. boulardii at the stomach stage (41%), L. leichmannii + β-glucan at the small intestine stage (52%), and L. leichmannii + S. boulardii + β-glucan at the colon stage (35%). These findings suggest that probiotics and prebiotics reduce aflatoxin bioaccessibility, thereby limiting gastrointestinal absorption.

Multi-Task NILM with Anomaly Detection Using a Hybrid CNN–BilSTM–Transformer Model

Gunay, Mihriban; Demir, Yakup; Zhilevski, Marin

Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) enables estimation of the energy use of individual appliances in smart buildings from a single aggregate meter. In practice, however, this task is not straightforward. Signals from different appliances can overlap, and the measured data may also include distortions such as spikes, drops, and noise. To address these issues, this study presents a multi-task triple-hybrid deep learning framework that handles appliance classification and anomaly detection together. The model brings together 1D-CNN, BiLSTM, and Transformer Attention so that local patterns, temporal dependencies, and wider contextual information can be learned within the same structure. It also uses a dual-output design to classify appliance categories and detect anomaly types simultaneously. Experiments were carried out on Building 1 of the UK-DALE dataset with four appliances: kettle, microwave, washer dryer, and fridge freezer. For the anomaly task, synthetic disturbances were added to segmented signal windows and grouped as normal, spike, drop, and noise. To check how well the proposed framework handled different scenarios, it was tested on both the UK-DALE and REDD datasets. Looking at the main UK-DALE results, the model correctly identified appliances 99.48% of the time and spotted anomalies with 98.80% accuracy. A secondary test on the REDD dataset yielded an 86.44% classification score. This proves the architecture can adjust to completely new power grid environments without losing its edge. On top of that, when pitted against standard benchmark models like Seq2Point, this triple-hybrid design clearly does a better job of mapping out complex signal changes. As a result, it yields much stronger anomaly detection metrics.

Affective States of Academics: The Dissolving Fantasy of the ‘Good Academy’

    Gülçiçek, Demet; Erdoğan, Emine

Drawing on the affective trajectories of academics in social science and humanities departments, this article asks how they imagine a ‘good academy’ and how they navigate the tension between that imagination and the demands of contemporary university regulations. Based on sixteen in-depth interviews with early-career researchers in Ankara, Turkey, it traces how academics narrate their affective relationship with the academy. Bringing together Berlant's conceptualisation of cruel optimism and Ngai's analysis of low-key affective states such as ugly feelings, the article shows that the attachment to the good academy is narrated as something that obstructs flourishing due to the institutional demands in higher education. This in-betweenness is analysed in relation to loosening attachment to the academy that is produced by a mood of irritation.
