To solve the problem of low efficiency of NOx emission reduction in self-reflux burners, this study is based on the concept of coordinated control of self-reflux burner structural and thermal parameters. After completing the structural design and optimization of thermal parameters, we continue to adjust the two key structural parameters: the nozzle axis distance and the length of the cylindrical section, to minimize NOx emissions. These are the two parameters that chiefly affect the mixing of flue gas and fuel gas. The results show that increasing nozzle axis distance can delay the mixing of gas and air and create a more uniform oxygen concentration field for the combustion process. The maximum combustion temperature is reduced from 1973.65 K to 1935.88 K and the volume fraction of NOx in the flue gas is reduced from 188.08×10−6 to 143.47×10−6. However, compared with the nozzle axis distance, the length of the cylindrical section of the burner has little effect on the mixing of the flow field. Under different cylindrical section lengths, the maximum combustion temperature does not change more than 3 K, and the volume fraction of NOx in the flue gas changes within 5×10−6.

In the present study, the protective effects of chrysin (CHR) against testicular damage caused by lead acetate (PbAc) were examined. In this way, 30 min after rats were given 25 and 50 mg/kg/b.w CHR orally for seven consecutive days, 30 mg/kg/b.w PbAc was administered orally. In biochemical analysis of testicular tissue, it was found that PbAc-reduced antioxidant parameters [glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT)], while it increased lipid peroxidation, inflammatory markers [nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), prostaglandin E2 (PGE-2), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS)], and 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG). In the immunohistochemical examination, it was determined that PbAc increased the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and caspase-3. Accordingly, PbAc was found to cause a decrease in sperm motility and an increase in the percentage of dead sperm. However, it has been observed that CHR relieves oxidative stress due to its antioxidant properties, thus protecting against inflammation and apoptosis. It also allowed the CHR sperm parameters to return to control group levels. The results revealed that CHR could be a natural substance to be used in Pb-induced testicular toxicity. Practical applications: Lead (Pb) is an important environmental contaminant heavy metal. Pb is believed to reduce fertility in men. Oxidative stress plays a significant role in the damage caused by Pb to testicular tissue. CHR is an antioxidant substance that occurs naturally in various plants and has various pharmacological properties. In the present study, it was investigated whether CHR has a protective effect against testicular toxicity induced by PbAc. The results revealed that in rats, CHR protects the testicular tissue from PbAc toxicity by showing antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects, thus bringing sperm parameters closer to normal.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ2Investigation of time effect on pectin production from citrus wastes with ohmic heating assisted extraction process
Sabanci, Serdal; Çevik, Mutlu; Göksu, Ali
Pectin is usually extracted by exposure to a high temperature and a specific pH value by conventional methods. However, due to reasons such as low energy efficiency of the process and damage to the pectin, alternative thermal and non-thermal methods are used in the pectin extraction process. In this study, the effect of different processing times (0, 5, 15, 30, 60, 120, 180 min) on pectin extraction was investigated for grapefruit, lemon, and orange samples at 80°C. Besides, it was determined that the electrical conductivity value ranged between 1.46–2.06 S/m during heating, the electrical conductivity value of the pH solution adjusted with sulfuric acid. Accordingly, it was figured out that the total amount of energy consumed increases as the process holding time increases. However, it was determined that there was a decrease in the average power value by turning on–off the system. Practical Application: Pectin is one of the additives used in many areas in the food industry. Pectin is now produced especially from agricultural waste peel. During this production, it is subjected to long processes at certain pH and certain temperatures. With the present study, determination of pectin yield over a wide period of time by using ohmic heating process and total ohmic heating energy was determined. In this way, it is thought that a serious contribution will be made to the literature and industry regarding different industrial agricultural waste peel (orange, grapefruit, lemon) during pectin production.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ2Developing Antibacterial Cotton Fabric with Zinc Borate Impregnation Process
İpek, Yeliz; Ertekin, Özlem
Cotton fabric is a commonly used textile because of its natural and healthy properties. The chemical structure of cotton consists cellulose with a ratio of over 90 %. Cellulose is a natural polymer and cotton fabric is a quiet useful textile because of its better moisture absorption, softness, and easy care properties. Moisture absorbtion property comes from the cellulosic structure of the fabric. However, its features such as being hydrophilic and inclinable to bacterial growth limits its application areas. Antibacterial cotton fabric may be used for hospital textiles such as hospital gowns, patient clothes, wound bandages; food packaging and storage textiles; home textiles like curtain, bed cover; clothing, etc. In this study, a novel environmentally friendly antibacterial cotton fabric was developed. Flame retardant zinc borate was used as antibacterial agent. For this purpose, zinc borate with a formula of ZnO·3B2O3·7H2O had been synthesized with wet chemical precipitation method and cotton fabric was treated with this material via sol-gel impregnation method. The impregnation method for cotton fabric provided a uniform distribution of zinc borate particles and processing the entire volume of the fiber. This method is also suitable for large quantity production processes. In the microbiological studies, Enterococcus which is commonly associated with the nosocomial infections and food spoilage was used. As a result, the antibacterial activity was observed in the fabrics treated with 0.1 mol·l−1 and 0.2 mol·l−1 concentration of zinc borate solutions.

In this study, the protective effects of chrysin (CR) on lead acetate (PbAc)-induced renal toxicity in Sprague-Dawley rats were investigated with biochemical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical methods. In the study, rats were given orally at 30 mg/kg/body weight (BW) PbAc after CR of 25 and 50 mg/kg/BW was administered to them orally (a total of 7 administrations for 7 days). The results showed that CR reduced urea and creatinine levels by alleviating PbAc-induced kidney damage. It was determined that CR decreases PbAc-induced lipid peroxidation due to its antioxidant properties and increases catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities, and glutathione (GSH) levels. It was also detected that CR protects DNA from the toxic effects of PbAc and reduces 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) levels. Biochemical and immunohistochemical findings demonstrated that CR had anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic effects and reduced nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), interleukin-33 (IL-33), prostaglandin-E2 (PGE-2), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), p53 levels, and the activities of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), which were increased with PbAc administration. Moreover, CR was found to increase the levels of aquaporin-1 (AQP-1) and nephrine in PbAc-induced kidney tissue. CR decreased the contents of lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), sodium (Na), and copper (Cu) and increased those of potassium (K) calcium (Ca) in renal tissue. These results indicated that CR considerably alleviates kidney toxicity caused by PbAc.

Reconstruction process of scalar field models (quintessence, tachyon, dilaton and K-essence), which can be performed by making use of some dark energy density definitions such as holographic, Ricci, new agegraphic and ghost types proposals, has been an interesting and very attractive area to many physicists in literature. In this work, in a five-dimensional framework, we establish a correspondence between the quintessence, tachyon and the dilaton type scalar field definitions and the generalized ghost dark energy model by considering the extended form of the Kaluza-Klein (EKK) gravity. Accordingly, we numerically study the associated equation of state parameters, as well as their kinetic energy and scalar potential terms.

Aslan, Naim
Reduced graphene oxide–amorphous carbon nanocomposites were coated on p-Si wafers to prepare graphene-based photodiodes or photodetectors. Electrophoretic deposition was used to prepare electronic devices. Scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used in the morphological and structural characterization. Characterization methods confirm that deposited films are in reduced graphene oxide–amorphous carbon nanocomposite structure. Photoresponsive characteristics were checked using I–V, I–t and C–t techniques. It was seen that diodes are responsive to illumination where increased photocurrent and photocapacitance were obtained for increased illumination intensity. Electrical properties were assessed; C–V, G–V properties were found to depend on AC signal frequency. Signal frequency-dependent behavior was attributed to interface states. The density of interface states was calculated, and it was seen that the density of interface states increases with increasing AC signal frequency. It was illustrated that electrical characteristics of photodiodes were affected by signal frequency and the density of interface states.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ2Investigation of Microstructural and Mechanical Properties of Different Titanium Alloys for Gamma Radiation Properties and Implant Applications
Taşgın, Yahya
In this study, the advantages and disadvantages of different titanium alloys used as industrial and biomedical implant materials are evaluated within the scope of multiple parameters. This research is supported by simulations and aims to understand how titanium and titanium alloys differ mechanically, micro-structurally and in terms of radioactivity. The matrix material of the eight samples used in this research is titanium. The effects of different elements such as Al, V, Sn, Ni, Pb, Mo, Cr, Zr, Fe, Nb, Co on titanium have been examined, the results are compared by considering multiple parameters, and the superior properties of the prominent alloys are highlighted. As a result of the mechanical and electrical tests performed on the alloys, it is obvious that the titanium alloy consisting of Mo and Nb has the highest Brinell hardness, elastic modulus, tensile strength and electrical conductivity parameters compared to other alloys examined within the scope of this research. In the metallographic studies and analyses on samples made up of different alloys, different structures and images emerge for each alloy. These elements rapidly lower the solidification temperature of the material, allowing the β phase to be formed. It has been observed that the two-phase situation has positive effects on the material. On the other hand, the results of gamma ray attenuation tests reveal that Mo and Nb, which make up the alloy, have superior performance compared to other alloy samples due to their high atomic number. Hexagonal fuzzy numbers (HFNs) can be used as a proficient logic to simplify understanding of ambiguity information. HFNs present the usual information in a comprehensive way and also the ambiguity section can be exemplified in a reasonable way. In this chapter, we proposed an improved Fine–Kinney occupational risk assessment approach using a well-known MCDM method Multi-Objective Optimization by Ratio Analysis (MULTIMOORA) using hexagonal fuzzy numbers. Since the mere MULTIMOORA has failed to handle uncertainty and vague information which usually exist in real world problems, we follow integration of HFNs and MULTIMOORA (HFMULTIMOORA). To show the applicability of the novel approach, a case study of risk assessment of a raw mill in cement plant was provided. Comparative analysis with using two aggregation tools as reciprocal rank method and dominance theory are carried out. Finally, the Python implementation of the proposed approach is implemented to be effective for those concerned in the future.

Cevik, Mutlu; Icier, Filiz
The ohmic thawing (OT) of minced meat sample was mathematically modelled using different numerical methods (Finite Difference-FD and Finite Volume-FV) for different process conditions (voltage gradients of 10, 13 and 16 V/cm and fat contents of meat sample as 2%, 10% and 18%). FD method was successful to predict the temperature changes for both heating and phase change regions. FV method was performed by using two different heat generation functions; depending on process time (UDF-1) or the center temperature (UDF-2). The description of the change of heat generation term depending on process time (UDF-1) in the ANSYS module was more successful with the experimental data compared to the description of the change of heat generation term depending the center temperature (UDF-2). Although FV model is more complex than FD model it can be applied for simulation of detailed temperature distributions. On the other hand, FD model can be applied for practical predictions of temperature histories for center temperatures in simple geometries. It is thought that the simulation of OT performed at different conditions with the FD and the FV methods would contribute valuable data in the design of household ohmic thawing/cooking systems for solid food materials.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ1Sustainable supplier evaluation and transportation planning in multi-level supply chain networks using multi-attribute- and multi-objective decision making
Lo, Huai-Wei; Liaw, Ching-Fang; Gul, Muhammet; Lin, Kuan-Yu
Supplier selection and transportation planning are essential tasks in managing supply chain networks (SCNs). The choice of a supplier has a significant influence on the transportation planning of SCNs, as the transportation routes will change. A limited number of studies in the literature have addressed the supplier selection and transportation planning issues simultaneously. This study proposes a two-stage multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach for sustainable supplier evaluation and transportation planning in multi-level SCNs. Initially, a supplier evaluation framework is proposed using the modified indifference threshold-based attribute ratio analysis (ITARA) and the performance calculation technique of the integrated multiple multi-attribute decision-making (PCIM-MADM) to determine the supplier's performance index. Subsequently, a multi-level SCN model is established, and the sustainable supplier selection and transportation planning problem is solved by the fuzzy multi-objective linear programming (FMOLP) method. A set of real-world data provided by a smart audio manufacturing company has been used to demonstrate the proposed approach. Decision-makers understand the importance of criteria through the weights constructed by the modified ITARA. Moreover, the results of the PCIM-MADM can effectively determine the supplier's ranking and provide improving strategies for underperforming suppliers. The augmented max–min technique of the FMOLP can produce a single optimal solution of the transportation allocation. The results show that our approach can effectively evaluate sustainable supplier performance and optimize transportation planning in SCNs.

Tang, Saihong; Akkurt, Nevzat; Zhang, Kai; Chen, Lufang; Ma, Mingquan
Cool roofs with higher solar reflectance and emittance can effectively reduce building energy consumption. However, it is still limited to use at night on account of the development of roof materials during the past decades. The newly proposed metamaterial-based cool roof (MCR) greatly improves the possibility of the radiative cooling in the daytime. To study the influence of MCR on the energy consumption for the office building, a small single-floor office was adopted to analyse the cooling performance of MCR by using EnergyPlus. In this study, the optimization analysis was conducted based on the proposed dimensionless thermal resistance (θRTR) and roof pitch (Δ). Then the annual electricity saving potential of the office building with MCR was evaluated in details based on the selected cities from all five climate zones in China. The results show that more annual electricity saving can be achieved under the optimized values of θR7 = 1.53 and Δ = 20°. Furthermore, more than 15.7% of annual cooling electricity saving can be achieved while the optimized θRTR and Δ are applied.

The aim of the present study was to quantify selected phenolic compounds, determine antioxidant activity and enzyme inhibitory effects of the aerial parts of Alkanna trichophylla Hub.-Mor. (A. trichophylla) and Convolvulus galaticus Rost.ex Choisy (C. galaticus) extracts prepared by homogenizer-assisted extraction (HAE), maceration (MAC) and infusion techniques. This is the first time such study has been designed to validate the phytochemical composition and bioactivity of these plants. Multivariate analysis was conducted on collected data. Rutin and caffeoylquinic acid derivatives were the most significant compounds in A. trichophylla and C. galaticus, respectively. The highest antioxidant activity of A. trichophylla was mostly exhibited by HAE/methanolic extracts as determined by DPPH, ABTS, FRAP (51.39, 112.70 and 145.73 mg TE/g, respectively) and phosphomolybdenum (2.05 mmol TE/g) assays. However, significant antioxidant activities varied within the extracts of C. galaticus. HAE/methanolic extract of A. trichophylla significantly depressed AChE (2.70 mg GALAE/g), BChE (5.53 mg GALAE/g) and tyrosinase (26.34 mg KAE/g) activities and that of C. galaticus inhibited AChE (2.04 mg GALAE/g), tyrosinase (31.25 mg KAE/g) and α-amylase (0.53 mmol ACAE/g) activities significantly. We concluded that HAE was the most efficient extraction technique as high yield of compounds and promising bioactivities were recorded from extracts prepared. Multivariate analysis showed that types of solvents influenced recovery of compounds and biological activities. This research study can be used as one methodological starting point for further investigation on these plants as all results are clearly promising and open the door to further research challenges such as cytotoxicity evaluation, molecular docking analysis, and more screening of pharmacological actions.

Çilingir, Seda; Goksu, Ali; Sabanci, Serdal
The ohmic heating process is known as homogeneous, efficient, and rapid heating. In the present study, it was aimed to analyze the extraction of pectin from lemon peel using ohmic heating, to evaluate the specific pectin production coefficient (SPPC, mg/kJ) and compared it with traditional pectin production (TPP). The extraction process was carried out at 3 different temperatures (70–90 °C), 3 different solid:liquid ratios (1:30, 1:40, 1:50 g/ml), 3 different extraction holding times (0–30 min), and a constant pH (pH 2 that adjusted with citric acid). From the results, extraction conditions affected the pectin yield. As the temperature and extraction holding time increased, the pectin yields increased. In general, the 30-min pectin yields of the ohmic heating-assisted extraction (OHAE) process were similar to the pectin yields obtained from the TPP under the same conditions. Performance evaluation of pectin production was made for 90 °C, and energy efficiency was found to be over 69% for 3 different solid to liquid ratios. It has been stated that as an alternative to the TPP method, the OHAE process can be applied.

As a widespread pollutant, glyphosate (GLY) adversely affects the aquatic environment and can impair the reproductive ability and functions of fish. The purpose of the current study was to assess in vitro effect of GLY on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) sperm cells. The sperm cells were exposed to different GLY concentrations (2.5, 5, 10 mg/L). Sperm motility parameters were analyzed with computer assisted sperm analysis. DNA fragmentation (%) was measured by the comet assay using fluorescence microscopy. With increased GLY concentration, sperm motility and duration decreased after exposure. DNA fragmentation (% DNA in tail) in sperm cells was higher in treatments containing GLY than control (p < 0.05). Consequently, sperm cells are sensitive to low doses of GLY, and this can negatively affect natural populations.

The bioremediation of this insecticide was investigated via the performance of O.thiophenivorans and S. melonis in agitated culture media. The agricultural soil used for the isolation of these two bacteria was taken from the cotton cultivated agricultural area in Adana province in Turkey. For this purpose, the isolated and enriched bacteria were added to the recommended insecticide concentrations, and the Imidacloprid active material, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Total Organic Carbon (TOC), pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) parameters were determined for two weeks on each day of the study. O. thiophenivorens and S. melonis bioremediate the Imidacloprid insecticide with high efficiency (over 90%). According to these results, it is understood that these bacteria can be preferred in the bioremediation of receiving environments that are contaminated with such pesticides and can be useful for scientists to handle the opposite effects of such persistent organic pollutants and COD, BOD5 and TOC parameters can easily give opinions about decreasing of pesticides like the active materials
