Reflections of nature-oriented outdoor sports activities on coronavirus-19 phobia during the pandemic process

    Sandikç, Muhammed Bahadır; Önen, Cihan

Study Objectives: This study was carried out to evaluate the impact of participation in nature-oriented outdoor sports activities on Coronavirus-19 phobia during the pandemic process. Methods: The population of the cross-sectional study consists of 289 people who were engaged in nature-oriented outdoor sports activities in the Tunceli region between 28.06.2021 and 20.07.2021. Results: COVID-19 phobia was statistically higher in women, people under 35, singles, those with high school or lower education, and those who do not have children. Although many nature sports activities reduce the phobia of COVID-19, there was especially a statistically significant decrease in COVID-19 phobia among those who engage in rock climbing. Besides, those who practiced outdoor sports with fear of death and quarantine had a statistically higher COVID-19 phobia score. There was a weakly significant negative relationship between the years of experience, the number of types of outdoor sports activities that the individuals engage in, and the COVID-19 phobia score. As the years of experience in these activities and their types increased, the COVID-19 phobia decreased, albeit weakly. Conclusion: Performing nature-oriented outdoor sports activities from different fields can be beneficial, even partially, in reducing the phobia caused by COVID-19. In pandemics, such as COVID-19, which have a wide range of negative effects on society, individuals can be directed to nature sports against COVID-19 phobia.

Electrocoagulation induced treatment of indigo carmine textile dye in an aqueous medium: the effect of process variables on efficiency evaluated using biochemical response of Gammarus pulex

Tanyol, Mehtap; Yildirim, Nuran Cikcikoglu; Alparslan, Dilek

Indigo carmine removal from aqueous solutions was investigated by the electrocoagulation process and biochemical responses of Gammarus pulex to solutions before and after treatment were studied. Electrocoagulation experiments in the first stage were carried out with central composite design (CCD) using response surface methodology (RSM). Optimization of process variables that maximize indigo carmine removal by electrocoagulation process was carried out by using a second-order model within the studied test range of various process variables. According to the optimization results, optimum conditions for obtaining 82.55% maximum indigo carmine removal were pH 5.86, a current density of 13.31 mA/cm2, an indigo carmine concentration of 20.01 mg/L, and a time period of 115.80 min. Under optimum conditions for indigo carmine removal, the amount of sludge formed was 0.928 kg/m3, electrode consumption was 0.0305 kg/m3, and energy consumption was 7.461 kWh/m3. The operating cost was calculated as 0.79 US$/m3 under treatment conditions where optimum indigo carmine removal was achieved. In the second stage, G. pulex was exposed to treated and untreated synthetic indigo carmine solutions obtained from experiments according to optimum conditions in order to investigate the biochemical response for 24 and 96 h. Treatment efficiency was evaluated with superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) biomarkers. Results clearly showed that the electrocoagulation process was a simple and effective treatment method for the decolorization of wastewaters containing indigo carmine dye. The bioassays used in the present study provided good credibility for checking the detoxification of treated and untreated indigo carmine solutions.

Low-velocity impact, bending, and compression response of carbon fiber/epoxy-based sandwich composites with different types of core materials

    Dogan, Akar

This study focuses on the investigation of the effects of different core types on the low velocity impact, three-point bending and out-of-plane compression loading performance of sandwich composites. Three core materials were selected: Balsa wood, PVC foam, and Ayous wood. The facesheets of sandwich composites were produced by woven carbon/epoxy. Balsa and PVC foam are widely used in sandwich composites as core materials. In this study, Ayous wood, which is the lightest tree after Balsa, was used as core material in addition to traditional core materials. Woven carbon fiber fabrics with an areal density 200 g/m2 as reinforcement and epoxy matrix were used to produce the sandwich composite. Vacuum-assisted resin infusion molding method was used to manufacture composite panels. A number of tests under various impact energy levels for three different sandwich composites were conducted with Fractovis Plus impact testing machine in order to investigate the energy absorption capacity of sandwich composites. Maximum contact forces, absorbed energies, and the maximum deflections of sandwich panels were obtained for each impact energy level. Despite having the same facesheets, Ayous core sandwich composites possess a higher perforation threshold than Balsa and PVC foam sandwich composites. The perforation threshold of Balsa, PVC foam, and Ayous sandwich composites are 85, 72, and 170 J, respectively. In addition, the Ayous core sandwich composites have better bending and compression strengths. The bending strength of the Ayous sandwich composite is higher about six times than PVC sandwich composite and about two times than Balsa sandwich composite.

Effects of Optimized Operating Parameters on Combustion Characteristics and NOx Emissions of a Burner based on Orthogonal Analysis

Xu, Qian; Akkurt, Nevzat; Yang, Gang; Zhu, Lidong; Shi, Kejian; Wang, Kang; Zou, Zhenwei; Liu, Zhihui; Wang, Jiulong; Du, Zhiwei

To optimize the structure of the burner, improve the combustion performance, and reduce the emission of NOx, a self-circulating low NOx combustion technology was used to design a new type of flue gas self-circulating low NOx burner. Based on previous research on the numerical model of combustion and the composition of mixed gas on combustion and NOx emissions, the effect of various factors on the ejection coefficient of the flue gas self-circulating structure was analyzed using the orthogonal test method, and the burner operating parameters, such as preheating temperature and excess air coefficient, were deeply studied through the three-dimensional finite element numerical model in this paper. The results show that the diameter ratio of the nozzle and the length of the cylindrical section of the flue gas self-circulating structure have great influence on its ejection and mixing ability. The optimal ejection coefficient was 0.4829. Overall, the amount of NOx emissions greatly increased from 6.23×10−6 (volume fraction) at the preheating temperature 973 K to 3.5×10−3 at preheating temperature 1573 K. When the excess air coefficient decreased from 1.2 to 1, the maximum combustion temperature decreased from 2036.3 K to 1954.22 K, and the NOx emissions decreased from 352.29×10−6 to 159.73×10−6.

A modified failure modes and effects analysis using interval-valued spherical fuzzy extension of TOPSIS method: case study in a marble manufacturing facility

    Gul, Muhammet; Ak, M. Fatih

Failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) is a commonly used step-by-step approach to assess potential failures existing in a product or process design. In this paper, a modified FMEA model based on an interval-valued spherical fuzzy extension of technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (IVSF-TOPSIS) is proposed to cope with drawbacks of the traditional risk priority number (RPN) computation. Spherical fuzzy sets are the integration of Pythagorean fuzzy sets and neutrosophic sets. They provide more freedom to experts in decision making by including the degree of membership, non-membership, and hesitation of fuzzy sets. Therefore, initially, TOPSIS is merged with a special branch of spherical sets “interval-valued spherical fuzzy sets” to determine priorities of emerged failures. As a novelty to traditional RPN of FMEA, three parameters called cost, prevention, and effectiveness in addition to the existed parameters of severity, occurrence and detection are attached to the proposed approach. Weights of these parameters are determined via an interval-valued spherical weighted arithmetic mean operator (IVSWAM). As a demonstration, a case study in a marble manufacturing facility is provided to show the applicability of the novel model. Results show that the most crucial failure modes concern with the maintenance and repairing works of the factory and the lack of technical periodic checks of lifting vehicles regarding “block area: crane” failures. Some comparative and validation studies are also performed to test the solidity of the approach.

Seismicity of East Anatolian of Turkey and Failures of Infill Walls Induced by Major Earthquakes

Doǧangün, Adem; Yön, Burak; Onat, Onur; Emin Öncü, Mehmet; Saǧlroǧlu, Serkan

There are three major fault zones in Turkey scattered around the country known as East Anatolian Fault (EAF), North Anatolian Fault (NAF) and Anatolian-Aegean Subduction Zone (AASZ). Last two decades, EAF has been rather quiescent compared with NAF. However, this quiescence was broken in the beginning of the millennium. The strong shaking was started in 2003 with Bingöl earthquake (Mw = 6.3) and the last earthquake on the EAF is the Sivrice-Elazlǧ (Mw = 6.8) on January 24, 2020. Strong seismicity of these faults damaged the structures severely and caused death of the habitants. This study aims to present, seismotectonic of the region, general characteristics of the earthquakes and more specifically to report structural damage of infill walls of the structure's damages caused by these earthquakes. Damage evaluation and identification of the observed infill wall damages due to 2003 Bingöl, 2011 Van earthquakes and January 24, 2020 Sivrice-Elazlǧ earthquake occurred Turkey's Eastern region, were presented, and possible solutions were suggested. Moreover, the effects of the infill walls on the behavior of structures under static and dynamic load cases are discussed that experienced in these earthquakes. Damages are classified according to formations such as in-plane or out-of-plane, evaluations and the results obtained from the discussions are presented for each category.

Hazard identification, risk assessment and control for dam construction safety using an integrated BWM and MARCOS approach under interval type-2 fuzzy sets environment

    Celik, Erkan; Gul, Muhammet

Undoubtedly, dams are one of the projects developed by people to make optimal water use and generate hydroelectric energy power. In addition to the importance of detailed project planning, faultless production, and optimal working conditions in dam constructions, it is equally important to identify and analyze the risks from the occupational health and safety (OHS) perspective that may arise during construction and operation. In this context, hazard identification, risk analysis, and control, which are the main issues of dam safety, have gained importance. In this study, a novel approach is developed for dam construction safety. Two newly proposed multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods of “Best-Worst Method-BWM” and “measurement of alternatives and ranking to Compromise solution-MARCOS”, are merged under the context of interval type-2 fuzzy sets (IT2FSs). Severity and probability, two essential parameters of the risk score, have been weighted using BWM. Subsequently, the priority orders of hazards have been determined by the MARCOS. In implementing the approach to the blasting process in dam construction, several control measures are suggested for stakeholders. Some comparative works and sensitivity analyses are performed to test the approach's validity and solidity from the methodological viewpoint.

Calculation of Gamma Shielding Properties for Glass Ceramics using FLUKA

Nur, Kuluöztürk Zehra; Demir, Nilgün; Dal, Murat

Abstract: In this paper, gamma radiation shielding properties of same glass ceramics are reported for 356, 662, 1173, and 1330 keV gamma energies. Firstly, the validity of the FLUKA method was determined using the (90–x)TeO2-xMoO3-10ZnO glass system whose shielding parameters were determined by different analytical methods in the literature. The mass attenuation coefficients (µm), half-value layer, and mean free path parameters for the glass ceramic samples were calculated by the FLUKA. When the results obtained with the FLUKA and XCOM database were examined, it was found that glass f6, which is one of the PbO–Al2O3–SiO2–TiO2 glass-ceramic samples, had the highest gamma shielding property among the glass ceramics. Additionally, comparisons show that the FLUKA code is an alternative method to analytical methods for determining gamma shielding parameters and it is a tool that can provide preliminary information and comparisons for experimental studies.

Boron-Doped Hydroxyapatite Coatings on NiTi Alloys Using the Electrophoretic Deposition Method: Enhanced Corrosion and Adhesion Performances

    Aksoy, M.E.; Aksakal, B.; Aslan, N.; Dikici, B.

Metallic implants are functionalized with coatings due to the need to protect against biological corrosion in the body. Hydroxyapatite (HAp) has desirable biocompatibility and structural properties, but poor mechanical properties limit its use as a standalone coating. In this study, boron-doped hydroxyapatite (B-HAp) biocomposites containing 5, 10, and 15% boron by weight were synthesized by the sol-gel method and applied as a coating to NiTi using electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The deposition was carried out for 60, 90, and 120 s, and sintering at 750 °C for 75 minutes under vacuum. The coated substrates were then characterized by XRD, SEM, and FT-IR, and their adhesion strengths and in-vitro corrosion behaviors in simulated body fluid were compared with uncoated samples. The results showed that the microporous powders formed well-bonded structures, which positively affect adhesion strength. The highest adhesion strength (30 MPa) and corrosion resistance were achieved with 15 wt.% B-HAP coating at 120 s deposition time and 76.5 μm coating thickness.

Effect of pumice powder and artificial lightweight fine aggregate on self-compacting mortar

Etli, Serkan; Cemalgil, Selim; Onat, Onur

An experimental program was conducted to investigate the fresh properties, mechanical properties and durability characteristics of the self-compacting mortars (SCM) produced with pumice powder and Artificial Lightweight Fine Aggregate (aLWFA). aLWFA was produced by using fly ash. A total of 16 different mixtures were designed with a constant water-binder ratio of 0.37, in which natural sands were partially replaced with aLWFA and pumice powder at different volume fractions of 5%, 10% and 15%. The artificial lightweight aggregates used in this study were manufactured through cold bonding pelletisation of 90% of class-F fly ash and 10% of Portland cement in a tilted pan with an ambient temperature and moisture content. Flowability tests were conducted on the fresh mortar mixtures beforehand, to determine the self-compacting characteristics on the basis of EFNARC. To determine the conformity of the fresh mortar characteristics with the standards, mini-slump and mini-V-funnel tests were carried out. Hardened state tests were conducted after 7, 28 and 56 days to determine the flexural strength and axial compressive strength respectively. Durability, sorptivity, permeability and density tests were conducted at the end of 28 days of curing time. The test results showed that the pumice powder replacement improved both the fresh state and the hardened state characteristics of the mortar and the optimum mixture ratio was determined as 15%, considering other studies in the literature. In the aLWFA mixtures used, the mechanical and durability characteristics of the modified compositions were very close to the control mixture. It is concluded in this study that mixtures with pumice powder replacement eliminated the negative effects of the aLWFA in the mortars and made a positive contribution.

Failure prioritization and control using the neutrosophic best and worst method

    Yucesan, Melih; Gul, Muhammet

Failure prioritization process is described by identifying potential failures and its effects, quantifying their priorities and determining appropriate ways to mitigate or control. In the literature, many approaches are suggested to prioritize failures and associated effects quantitatively. Multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) approaches are forefront that they can express the failures verbally based on decision-makers’ judgments. They explain different types of uncertainties, which are generally modeled by fuzzy sets. However, fuzzy sets focus only on one membership value in decision-making. At this point, neutrosophic sets are more suitable than classical fuzzy sets by proposing three membership values named truth-membership, indeterminacy-membership and falsity-membership. Therefore, in this study, a novel approach based on the neutrosophic best and worst method (NBWM) is proposed and a case study is also performed in the implant production. The best and worst method (BWM) is merged with neutrosophic sets since it has fewer pairwise comparisons while determining the importance weights of failures. To show the applicability of the approach, a case study in an implant manufacturing plant that produces many products, including implants in different shapes and sizes in Turkey is carried out. Besides the case study, a comparative study is performed to test the validity of the proposed NBWM approach. This approach can make the decision-making process more dynamic in real-world problems with indeterminate and inconsistent information, considering the benefits of BWM and neutrosophic sets either individually or in integration. The present study contributes to the knowledge both methodologically and in an application by proposing NBWM for failure assessment problems for the first time in the literature and creating an adaptive model for manufacturing and other industries.

Factors affecting ICT integration in TURKISH education: a systematic review

    Turgut, Yigit Emrah; Aslan, Alper

This research aims to reveal factors affecting Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) integration in learning environments in Turkey. The meta-synthesis method is used to make in-depth analysis and to interpret qualitative research findings on this issue. Through inclusion and exclusion criteria, 60 studies among 907 candidate studies accessed from databases named Web of Science, Education Resource Information Center (ERIC) and the Turkish Academic Network and Information Center (ULAKBIM) are included in this research. As a result of analyses, it is revealed that ICT integration into learning environments in Turkey is affected by five factors; students, educational material, infrastructure, management, and teachers. Considering these factors, it has been found that certain factors become prominent namely: the ICT and pedagogy competence of teachers; students’ ICT competence; a lack of technical equipment and technical support; a lack of educational materials; the attitudes of school administrators; and the quality and lack of in-service training for ICT. It is concluded that the factors affecting the ICT integration in education are directly or indirectly related to each other, and that ICT integration should be addressed with all its stakeholders and phases as a whole.

A new type of two-supply, one-return, triple pipe-structured heat loss model based on a low temperature district heating system

Xu, Qian; Wang, Kang; Zou, Zhenwei; Zhong, Liqiong; Akkurt, Nevzat; Feng, Junxiao; Xiong, Yaxuan; Han, Jingxiao; Wang, Jiulong; Du, Yanping

Based on the design concept of a fourth-generation smart pipe network system, this paper innovatively proposes a new TOTS (Two-supply/One-return, triple pipe structure) arrangement method for district heating systems. Moreover, to accurately predict the heat loss due to the pipeline operation of the multi-pipe system, based on the multipole calculation method, a new heat loss theoretical analytical model for the TOTS was created; additionally, a corresponding three-dimensional numerical simulation model was established, which was analyzed and numerically solved. The results showed that in comparison with thermal loss data measured by Danfoss et al., the above analytical and numerical models have a high accuracy, and the deviation is within 2%. Additionally, through calculations, it was found that the distance between the heating pipes is an important factor that affects the total heat loss from the new multi-control heating system and the actual heat exchange between pipes.

Late Eocene to Late Miocene palaeoecological and palaeoenvironmental dynamics of the Ereğli-Ulukışla Basin (Southern Central Anatolia)

Akgün, Funda; Kayseri-Özer, Mine Sezgül; Tekin, Erdoğan; Varol, Baki; Şen, Şevket; Herece, Erdal; Gündoğan, İbrahim; Sözeri, Koray; Us, Muhammed Sami

The Ereğli-Ulukışla Basin which is the focus of this study is situated at the south-eastern edge of the Central Anatolian Cenozoic basins (Tuzgölü, Haymana, Çankırı-Çorum, and Sivas), and is divided into two sub-basins, the Aktoprak (AT) and Hacıbekirli-Tepeköy (HT). These sub-basins mainly comprise a stratigraphically discontinuous and laterally variable series, represented by ‘fluvio-lacustrine’ siliciclastic and carbonate sediments deposited over a wide range of environments, including meandering and braided rivers, coastal fluvial and fan deltas, mixed carbonate-siliciclastic shores, dry lake flats, and coal-bearing swamps. In the Ereğli-Ulukışla Basin, higher palaeotopographic conditions existed in the AT because of the uplift of the Central Anatolian Plateau during late Middle Miocene (Serravallian)-early Late Miocene (Tortonian) and the subsequent uplift of the Taurus Mountains in the latest Miocene (Messinian) as deduced in the Tepeköy region (northeast) of the HT sub-basin. Diversity and abundance of archaic pollen (Normapolles) in the pollen biostratigraphy decreased from the Eocene to Oligocene, while forms with advanced angiosperm morphology (post-Normapolles), were observed with the increase in post-Normapolles during the Miocene. The dominance of woody angiosperms in the pollen assemblages, and increasing variety and abundance of ‘open herbs’ and shrub pollen from the Early Miocene to Late Miocene defines an important change in flora. Furthermore, the palaeoclimatic conditions changed from humid-subtropical to warm-temperate during the sediment deposition in the Ereğli-Ulukışla Basin. Recurrent arid phases during the Late Miocene are indicated by the deposition of reddish caliche conglomerates in broad dry lake flats (HT), and evaporites in local playa lakes (AT), respectively.

Using finite element analysis to predict the damage in FGM-3D notched plate under tensile load; Different geometric concept

    Houari, A.; Mokhtari, M.; Bouchikhi, A.S.; Polat, A.; Madani, K.

FGM (functionally graded materials) have experienced rapid expansion in recent years in several industrial fields. The analysis of their mechanical behavior by the finite element method requires the use of subroutines established under a FORTRAN compiler given the difficulty in implementing the type of behavior of the materials constituting the FGM. Our work aims to establish a program in MATLAB (UMM) making possible to introduce the behavior of the FGM by element in the mesh model of the structure, hence the advantage and reliability of graded the material in three dimensions for two or even three constituents of FGM and secondly, for different geometric designs. This technique is more sensitive to the mesh, hence the adaptation strategy of a driven mesh in order to improve the precision and the convergence of results under minimal computation time. The constitutive law of our model follows the von Mises equivalent stress flow theory with a hardening variable in incremental form. Moreover, to describe the elastic–plastic behavior of FGM, the model of TTO (Tamura-Tomota-Ozawa) was used for both methods that of UMAT in the form of a numerical algorithm and for our new method in the form of calculated values by the MATLAB code. The parameters used in the two calculation methods are taken from the results of stress–strain tests of the two materials; ceramic (TiB; Titanium mono biorde) and metal (Ti; Titanium). A comparison between the two methods has taken place in the form of load–displacement curves in order to present the capacities of our technique with respect to the usual UMAT technique. However, for damage, the use of the XFEM technique in our UMM method has shown its advantage in the separation of the structure after crack initiation. The crack path as well as its propagation speed under the effect of the volume fraction exponent of the FGM has been highlighted. The two models used in this study (UMM and UMAT) were validated on the one hand with analytics through the TTO model and on the other hand by the experimentation of a tensile test.

Green supplier selection for textile industry: a case study using BWM-TODIM integration under interval type-2 fuzzy sets

Celik, Erkan; Yucesan, Melih; Gul, Muhammet

Although environmental awareness has reached a high level, enterprises—regardless of their working domains—follow the concept of greenness for their practices. This awareness among the stakeholders and supply chain experts has a positive impact on the purchasing departments of enterprises in various sectors to consider greenness in their procurement processes. The critical decision that must be made in green supply chain management (GSCM) is supplier selection. In the textile industry, a highly competitive market in recent years, suppliers for this industry have crucial roles in business activities considering environmental issues. Therefore, green supplier selection (GSS) in the textile industry is considered a must-be process for the stakeholders. In this study, a GSS problem is tackled as a multi-criteria decision process. Best worst method (BWM) and TODIM (an acronym in Portuguese of interactive and multi-criteria decision-making) methods are merged under an improved fuzzy concept of interval type-2 fuzzy sets (IT2FSs). In determining green suppliers’ evaluation criteria, BWM with interval type-2 fuzzy numbers (IT2F-BWM) is used. In selecting green suppliers, an interval type-2 fuzzy TODIM (IT2F-TODIM) is applied. Considering the characteristics of IT2FSs, BWM, and TODIM methods either individually and in integrated style, the proposed approach can handle uncertainty in the decision-making of GSS. To demonstrate the applicability of the approach, a case study in the Turkish textile industry is performed. Three green supplier alternatives (S1, S2, and S3) are assessed under forty-two sub-criteria. The study shows the most significant sub-criteria are recognized as dye and print quality, product design and pattern suitability, profit on the product, variation in price, and purchase cost. S2 green supplier has been selected as the most appropriate one. A sensitivity analysis is also fulfilled to check variation in the ranking of green suppliers.

Systems failure analysis using Z-number theory-based combined compromise solution and full consistency method

Yousefi, Samuel; Valipour, Mahsa; Gul, Muhammet

Financial and time constraints force managers to put limited failure modes in priority to implement corrective and preventive actions. Thus, how prioritization can be done more constructively is of particular importance. This study aims to introduce an improved Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) technique based on an extension of the Combined Compromise Solution (CoCoSo) method and the Full Consistency Method (FUCOM) to assess and prioritize failures in a production process. These developed methods called Z-CoCoSo and Z-FUCOM rely on the Z-number theory. They can consider uncertainty and reliability simultaneously in determining the weights of risk factors and the value of these factors in the studied problem. The proposed approach can cover some shortcomings of the conventional FMEA technique employed in identifying potential failures before their occurrence. Applying this approach enables experts to consider different weights for risk factors and uncertainty in the risk assessment process and provides them with a reliable ranking with high separability. Implementing the introduced approach for a real case study in the automotive parts industry has been compared with FMEA and other existent versions of the used methods demonstrating its reliable prioritization.

Nanofiller reinforced biodegradable PHA/PLA composites: physico-chemical, thermal and dielectric properties

    Torğut, Gülben; Gürler, Nedim

In this study, the electrical, thermal, morphological and physical properties of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) and polylactic acid (PLA) blends and its nanocomposites prepared in different content of montmorillonite (3%wt, 5%wt, 7%wt) were investigated. Biodegradable blends of PHA/PLA were prepared in different compositions ranging from 30–70%. Nanocomposite films were analyzed by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and scanning electron microscopy for morphology (SEM). The effects of the amount of MMT used as a reinforcing filler on the morphology, color, opacity, thermal stability, and dielectric properties of PHA/PLA films were investigated. SEM analyses showed good interaction between MMT and PHA/PLA film. As the MMT concentration increases, the transparency of the films decreases. In addition, MMT has improved thermal stability. Also, the dielectric properties and electrical conductivity of nanocomposite films were studied. The measurements were performed at frequencies between 100 Hz to 10 kHz at room temperature. As the frequency increased, dielectric permittivity (έ), the dielectric loss (ε'') and the electrical conductivity (σ) decreased and remain constant at high frequencies. έ, ε'' and the σ increased with increasing MMT content.

The Fine–Kinney method (Fine in J Saf Res 3:157–166, 1971; Kinney and Wiruth in Practical risk analysis for safety management. Naval Weapons Center, pp 1–20, 1976), which was first introduced as an occupational health and safety risk analysis tool in the 1970s, is a systematic methodology that provides a mathematical formula for calculating the risk that arises due to a specified hazard. In the traditional version of Fine–Kinney as suggested in its original version, a risk score (RS) is calculated as a result of mathematical multiplication of probability (P), exposure (E), and consequence (C) parameters. These calculated risk scores are used to establish priorities for the corrective efforts in order to eliminate risks or reduce their effects to a reasonable level. This simple and useful method is preferred and implemented by small and medium-sized enterprises. In the academic literature, it has been applied for many risk analysis problems, although it includes several drawbacks recently revealed. In this method, no weight assignment is made for each risk parameter. Also, it is hard to assess consequence, exposure, and probability, precisely. Multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) is a pool of methods used in occupational health and safety risk analysis both by international standard-setting organizations and scholars from the literature. In classical MCDM methods, performance values and weights of decision criteria are known precisely and are specified with crisp numbers. However, many real-world problems contain uncertainties, and the knowledge and judgment of experts cannot be expressed precisely. Fuzzy-based MCDM methods, which are developed to reflect types and degrees of uncertainties better, produce more accurate results compared to classical methods. In this chapter, we first present the basics of Fine–Kinney method, including its implementing procedure, basic terminology, and drawbacks. Then, we provide a state-of-the-art review of Fine–Kinney occupational risk assessment method and its extensions by fuzzy sets. Graphical results obtained from the review are demonstrated to show the current state. Future work suggestions are also included to the chapter to show the possible gaps and possible opportunities.
