- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Scopus SJRQ2Statistical evaluation of the bioremediation performance of Ochrobactrum thiophenivorans and Sphingomonas melonis bacteria on Imidacloprid insecticide in artificial agricultural field
Onder Erguven, Gokhan; Demirci, Ulas
Background: Pesticides are applied directly on the soil or on the vegetation, and thus, they can reach the receiving environment easily. In this way, environmental damage that stems from pesticides also affects public health and the natural habitat. Pesticides are one of the most harmful pollutant groups in terms of human health, fauna and the environment. They penetrate the application field and the applicator right after the application and start to show adverse effects. Methods: The bioremediation of the Imidacloprid (C9H10ClN5O2) insecticide, which is used commonly in Mediterranean climate, was compared with some soil bacteria in artificially prepared fields. For this purpose, firstly, it was determined whether the soil samples taken from a field where cotton was cultivated in Adana in Turkey was suitable for bioremediation. Then, the bacteria were isolated from these soils with the 16sRNA method. The enhanced microbial consortia of these isolated bacteria were inoculated to the artificial fields, meanwhile, the recommended concentrations of Imidacloprid were added to these agricultural fields. Imidacloprid, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5) and Total Organic Carbon (TOC) measurements were performed every day for two weeks on the filtrate samples taken from the artificial fields. Results: As a result of the monitoring, it was determined that Ochrobactrum thiophenivorans (Ot) and Sphingomonas melonis (Sm) species and their mixtures could eliminate the Imidacloprid pesticide within two weeks’ time. The removal efficiencies were 100% for active ingredient for each bacterium and their mixtures while COD were 97% and 96% for Ot. and Sm., respectively. TOC and BOD5 removal rates were 97% for both types and their mixtures in one or two-week period. Mixture of Ot and Sm shows 98.5% for COD, BOD5 parameters and 97.5% for TOC parameter. Conclusions: The results that will be obtained will help in the rehabilitation of the receiving environments that are exposed to pesticides in our country and take precautions to avoid the accumulation of pesticides in the body of the humans who are at the top of the food chain.

Ozturk, Tulin; Talo, Muhammed; Yildirim, Eylul Azra; Baloglu, Ulas Baran; Yildirim, Ozal; Rajendra Acharya, U.
The novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-2019), which first appeared in Wuhan city of China in December 2019, spread rapidly around the world and became a pandemic. It has caused a devastating effect on both daily lives, public health, and the global economy. It is critical to detect the positive cases as early as possible so as to prevent the further spread of this epidemic and to quickly treat affected patients. The need for auxiliary diagnostic tools has increased as there are no accurate automated toolkits available. Recent findings obtained using radiology imaging techniques suggest that such images contain salient information about the COVID-19 virus. Application of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) techniques coupled with radiological imaging can be helpful for the accurate detection of this disease, and can also be assistive to overcome the problem of a lack of specialized physicians in remote villages. In this study, a new model for automatic COVID-19 detection using raw chest X-ray images is presented. The proposed model is developed to provide accurate diagnostics for binary classification (COVID vs. No-Findings) and multi-class classification (COVID vs. No-Findings vs. Pneumonia). Our model produced a classification accuracy of 98.08% for binary classes and 87.02% for multi-class cases. The DarkNet model was used in our study as a classifier for the you only look once (YOLO) real time object detection system. We implemented 17 convolutional layers and introduced different filtering on each layer. Our model (available at (https://github.com/muhammedtalo/COVID-19)) can be employed to assist radiologists in validating their initial screening, and can also be employed via cloud to immediately screen patients.

Kaya, Sema Kayapinar
The extent of the outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) had a major impact on health, social life, economic and environmental activities in almost every country over the world. It has disrupted the sustainable development of countries and brought many uncertainties for their future capabilities. In this study, the effects of the COVID-19 on OECD countries' sustainable development were investigated, and the sustainable development performance of the countries was evaluated by the MultiAttributive Ideal-Real Comparative Analysis (MAIRCA) method. Data for the second quarter of 2020 and the same quarter of the previous year is considered. Then, the results obtained by the MAIRCA method were compared with two different multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods called MABAC (Multi‐Attributive Border Approximation Area Comparison) and WASPAS (Weighted Aggregated Sum Product Assessment). The effectiveness and validity of the results obtained from these methods were tested with Spearman's correlation coefficient. Finally, to examine the effect of COVID-19 on the indicators of sustainable development, a non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test was applied. As a result, it was concluded that COVID-19 negatively affected the sustainable development of countries. However, sustainable development performances of developed countries have been observed to be better than developing countries.

We investigated the accumulation of critical raw materials (CRMs) in macroalga (green alga Cladophora fracta) in mine gallery water with the aim of presentation of the possibility of using the algae as a bioaccumulator of CRMs. The CRMs investigated in the present study were lanthanum (La), vanadium (V), tungsten (W), scandium (Sc), bismuth (Bi), antimony (Sb), gallium (Ga) and cobalt (Co). The highest concentrations of La, V, W, Sc, Bi, Sb, Ga and Co were determined as 3.16 ± 0.15, 22 ± 1.0, 2.0 ± 0.1, 2.4 ± 0.12, 0.21 ± 0.01, 2.47 ± 0.13, 1.4 ± 0.07 and 7.28 ± 0.35 mg/kg, respectively. Bioconcentration factor values followed the order of La > V>W > Ga > Sb > Bi > Co > Sc. Also, metal pollution index (MPI) is used in order to identify the degree of pollution of C. fracta. The MPI values calculated were between 1.09 and 2.2. As a result, it was determined that C. fracta highly accumulated the CRMs from the mine gallery water and was a good bioaccumulator in remediation technology. In this way, it is possible to minimize or eliminate the environmental risks of the materials in the gallery waters.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Scopus SJRQ2A novel method for performance improvement of chaos-based substitution boxes
Artuğer, Firat; Özkaynak, Fatih
Symmetry plays an important role in nonlinear system theory. In particular, it offers several methods by which to understand and model the chaotic behavior of mathematical, physical and biological systems. This study examines chaotic behavior in the field of information security. A novel method is proposed to improve the performance of chaos-based substitution box structures. Substitution box structures have a special role in block cipher algorithms, since they are the only nonlinear components in substitution permutation network architectures. However, the substitution box structures used in modern block encryption algorithms contain various vulnerabilities to side-channel attacks. Recent studies have shown that chaos-based designs can offer a variety of opportunities to prevent side-channel attacks. However, the problem of chaos-based designs is that substitution box performance criteria are worse than designs based on mathematical transformation. In this study, a postprocessing algorithm is proposed to improve the performance of chaos-based designs. The analysis results show that the proposed method can improve the performance criteria. The importance of these results is that chaos-based designs may offer opportunities for other practical applications in addition to the prevention of side-channel attacks.

In this study, genetic variation and phylogenetic analysis of 13 populations of 6 species belonging to Conringia genus spreading in Turkey were performed using RAPD markers. Genomic DNA isolation from the leaves of the Conringia plant samples was performed via using a commercial kit. Seven RAPD primers were used to identify the genetic diversity between the populations. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) was performed using DNA samples and primers. PCR products were resolved using agarose gel electrophoresis and visualized under UV light. All gel images were analyzed, and the absence and presence of polymorphic bands were scored. The total of 34 DNA bands were detected by seven RAPD primers. PAUP 4.0b10 analysis program was used to calculate phylogenetic tree and genetic distances between the species. The phylogenetic tree was obtained using the UPGMA algorithm and it was composed of two clades. According to the PAUP analysis, the species having the closest distance between each other are C. planisiliqua (Ankara-AyaG) and C. planisiliqua (Ankara-Nallihan) with the value of 0.000 and those having the longest distance are C. grandiflora (Akseki Cukurkoy) and C. orientalis (Elazig-Baskil) with the value of 0.6000. The results suggest that the RAPD markers are useful tools to demonstrate the genetic relationships between populations of the Conringia species.

Etli, Serkan; Güneyisi, Esra Mete
In this study, the seismic behavior of regular and irregular composite moment resisting frame (CMRF) buildings was investigated. To this aim, 5, 8, 10, 13 and 15-story CMRFs having concrete filled steel tube columns and composite beams were designed at high ductility level and their performances were evaluated comparatively. The case study CMRF structures were categorized into two groups as regular and irregular in elevation. Examined irregular structures have setbacks in different story levels. During the design and performance analysis, SeismoStruct software was employed. Nonlinear static pushover and incremental dynamic analyses were used in the seismic performance assessment. The uniform and triangular load distributions were considered in the pushover analysis while a total of 22 earthquake acceleration records were utilized in the dynamic analysis. The variation in the lateral response, global yielding value, interstory drift, behavior factor, inherent strength factor, overstrength factor, and ductility factor were examined for the regular and irregular CMRF structures. It was observed that the regular CMRFs were more consistent with the design assumptions as compared to the irregular ones. Moreover, the former exhibited more uniform non-elastic demands over the building height according to the results of the incremental dynamic analysis. Under the seismic scenario adopted, all the building types yielded higher values of the behavior factor complied with the limits available in the code.

Advances in artificial intelligence technologies have made it possible to obtain more accurate and reliable results using digital images. Due to the advances in digital histopathological images obtained using whole slide image (WSI) scanners, automated analysis of digital images by computer support systems has become interesting. In particular, deep learning architectures, are one of the preferred approaches in the analysis of digital histopathology images. The deeper networks trained on large amounts of image data are adapted for different tasks using transfer learning technique. In this study, automated detection of invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC), which is the most common subtype of breast cancers, is proposed using deep transfer learning technique. We have used deep learning pre-trained models, ResNet-50 and DenseNet-161 for the IDC detection task. The public histopathology dataset containing 277,524 image patches were used in our experimental studies. As a result of training on the last layers of pre-trained deep networks, DenseNet-161 model has yielded F-sore of 92.38% and balanced accuracy value of 91.57%. Similarly, we have obtained F-score of 94.11% and balanced accuracy value of 90.96% using ResNet-50 architecture. In addition, our developed model is validated using the publicly available BreakHis breast cancer dataset and obtained promising results in classifying magnification independent histopathology images into benign and malignant classes. This study was designed to synthesize poly(sodium acrylate-co-N-isopropylacrylamide) via aqueous free-radical polymerization using the 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile initiator system at 60°C. The structural characterization of the copolymer was determined by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The polymer was synthesized in two different ratios, namely, poly(NaAc-co-NIPA1:1) and poly(NaAc-co-NIPA2:1), to investigate whether it affects their antibacterial–antifungal activities and anti-tumour effects. When the antimicrobial activities of different proportions of the copolymer extracts prepared with pure water were examined using the agar disc diffusion sensitivity test (at 120 μL: 10.8 mg/µL), it was observed that they had effect at increasing rates against all the bacteria, yeasts and dermatophyte fungi such as Staphylococcus aureus COWAN 1, Staphylococcus cohnii ATCC 29974, Bacillus megaterium DSM 32, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Klebsiella pneumoniae FMC 5, Pseudomonas aeruginosa DMS 50071 SCOTTA, Candida albicans FMC 17, Candida glabrata ATCC 66032, Trichophyton sp. and Epidermophyton sp. The results of this study revealed that the obtained copolymers have significant effects on the treatment of diseases. In addition, the anti-tumour activities of the poly(NaAc-co-NIPA1:1) copolymer on human breast (MCF-7) and ovarian cancer (A-2780) cell line were specified and it was determined that high doses of the copolymer showed anti-tumour effects on both types of cancer cell lines. Also, this article reviews its antimicrobial and anticancer activities that will be of help for future scientists.

Background. The population of Lagocephalus spadiceus (Richardson, 1845), one of the Lessepsian species that migrated from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea through the Suez Canal, has been growing rapidly in Turkey in recent years. This situation poses a serious danger to fisheries and human health. There is little information about the biology of this species. The presently reported study permits a greater understanding of the age and growth characteristics of the pufferfish L. spadiceus from the Gulf of Iskenderun, north-eastern Mediterranean. Materials and methods. Samples were captured by commercial bottom trawlers at depths of 24–50 m during 9 trawling operations conducted during the fishing seasons between 2012 and 2013 in the Gulf of Iskenderun, northeastern Mediterranean. Age determinations were carried out using vertebrae. Images of vertebrae suitable for age determination were obtained with a dissecting microscope. The index of the mean percentage error (IMPE) was calculated to assess the precision of the age determinations between two independent readers. Growth parameters for all individuals were then determined by fitting observed and length-at-age data using the von Bertalanffy growth equation. In addition, the condition factor (CF) was determined. Results. A total of 1116 specimens (529 females and 587 males) were sampled, ranging from 6.7 to 34.0 cm in total length and from 4.30 to 557.64 g in weight. The female-to-male ratio was 1:1.1. Age determination was conducted using vertebral band counts. The age of the examined specimens ranged from 0 to 10 years. One female individual was determined to be 17 years of age (45.6 cm and 1269.0 g). The von Bertalanffy growth equations were Lt = 47.21[1 – e–0.116(t+ 2.04)] and Wt = 1296.18 [1 – e–0.116(t+ 2.04)]2.846 for females, Lt = 46.36 [1 – e–0.133(t+ 1.76)] and Wt = 1381.86 [1 – e–0.133(t+ 1.76)]2.817 for males and Lt = 46.90 [1 – e–0.120(t+ 1.97)] and Wt = 1345.67 [1 – e–0.120(t+ 1.97)]2.831 for all individuals. The growth performance index (Ф´) value was calculated as 2.421 for all individuals. The condition factor ranged from 0.890 to 2.768 for females and from 0.899 to 2.767 for males. Conclusions. It is very important to investigate L. spadiceus, an invasive species, in order to prevent its harmful effects on fisheries and human health. As this study is the first study on the age and growth of L. spadiceus in the northeastern Mediterranean, it will significantly contribute to future ecosystem conservation and management strategies.

Alp, Hevidar; Ince, Muharrem; Ince, Olcay Kaplan; Onal, Ali
In this study, Eriochrome Black T (EBT) removal from aqueous media by Agaricus campestris (AC) which is an eco-friendly biosorbent was investigated using a central composite design (CCD) combined with response surface methodology. The CCD was chosen as the statistical prediction method to reduce the number of experiments which, in turn, will directly save time and chemicals. To opti-mize the process, various experimental independent variables such as the pH of the solution, contact time, adsorbent dosage and temperature were selected. The optimal experimental conditions were obtained as 6.5, 30°C, 20 min and 20 mg, for solution pH, temperature, contact time and adsorbent dosage, respectively. Under these optimized conditions, maximum EBT (100 mg L–1 initial concentra-tion) removal efficiency was calculated as 64.2 mg g–1. The independent variables and their interaction significance were checked using analysis of variance and it was found that the EBT biosorption on AC was highly significant (p < 0.001). The results were justified by the relatively high correlation coefficients (R2 = 0.9967) of the statistical prediction. The EBT biosorption was confirmed by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis monitoring the functional groups during EBT biosorption on AC. This was the first report on the parameter optimization of EBT biosorp-tion using AC in an experimental design. The used biosorbent was characterized by FTIR, scanning electron microscope coupled with energy dispersive spectrometer and thermogravimetric analysis. Driver behavior plays a major role in road safety because it is considered as a significant argument in traffic accident avoidance. Drivers mostly face various risky driving factors which lead to fatal accidents or serious injury. This study aims to evaluate and prioritize the significant driver behavior factors related to road safety. In this regard, we integrated a decision-making model of the Best-Worst Method (BWM) with the triangular fuzzy sets as a solution for optimizing our complex decision-making problem, which is associated with uncertainty and ambiguity. Driving characteristics are different in different driving situations which indicate the ambiguous and complex attitude of individuals, and decision-makers (DMs) need to improve the reliability of the decision. Since the crisp values of factors may be inadequate to model the real-world problem considering the vagueness and the ambiguity, and providing the pairwise comparisons with the requirement of less compared data, the BWM integrated with triangular fuzzy sets is used in the study to evaluate risky driver behavior factors for a designed three-level hierarchical structure. The model results provide the most significant driver behavior factors that influence road safety for each level based on evaluator responses on the Driver Behavior Questionnaire (DBQ). Moreover, the model generates a more consistent decision process by the new consistency ratio of F-BWM. An adaptable application process from the model is also generated for future attempts.
