Survey of wild food plants for human consumption in Gecitli (Hakkari, Turkey)

Kaval, Idris; Behçet, Lutfi; Çakilcioglu, Ugur

This study aims to record accumulation of knowledge on plants which are used as food by native people of Gecitli (Hakkari, Turkey) that has a rich culture and a very natural environment. In addition, the medical uses of these plants were compiled from the literature. Study area was located on the East of Anatolian diagonal, in the Eastern Anatolia region. Field study was carried out over a period of approximately two years (2008-2010). During this period, 84 vascular plant taxa were collected. The plants were pressed in the field and prepared for identification. A total of 84 food plants belonging to 30 families were identified in the region. In the study being conducted, use of wild plants as food points out interest of people in Gecitli in wild plants. The fact that a large proportion of edible plants are also being used for medicinal purposes indicates that the use of wild plants has a high potential in the region. The present study shows that further ethnobotanical investigations are worthy to be carried out in Turkey, where most of knowledge on popular food plants are still to discover. In Turkey, the number of ethnobotanic studies is ever-increasing. However, traditional uses of many wild plants have not been recorded yet. In terms of food safety, the adverse effects that may arise due to the use of wild plants, without sufficient knowledge must be reported to the native people.

    Baskonus, Haci Mehmet; Bulut, Hasan

In this paper, we apply the Fractional Adams-Bashforth-Moulton Method for obtaining the numerical solutions of some linear and nonlinear fractional ordinary differential equations. Then, we construct a table including numerical results for both fractional differential equations. Then, we draw two dimensional surfaces of numerical solutions and analytical solutions by considering the suitable values of parameters. Finally, we use the L-2 nodal norm and L-infinity maximum nodal norm to evaluate the accuracy of method used in this paper.

ON SOME NEW ANALYTICAL SOLUTIONS FOR THE (2+1)-DIMENSIONAL BURGERS EQUATION AND THE SPECIAL TYPE OF DODD-BULLOUGH-MIKHAILOV EQUATION

    Baskonus, Haci Mehmet; Bulut, Hasan

Some new travelling wave transform methods are very important for obtaining analytical solutions of special type of nonlinear partial differential equations (NLPDEs). Some of these solutions of NLPDEs may be in the different forms such as rational function solutions, trigonometric function solutions, hyperbolic function solutions, exponential function solutions and Jacobi elliptic function solutions. These forms tell us the various properties of the NLPDEs from scientifical applications to engineering. In this research, we have studied to obtain the analytical solution of the nonlinear (2+1)-dimensional Burgers equation which is named from Johannes Martinus Burgers and the nonlinear special type of the Dodd-Bullough-Mikhailov equation introduced to the literature by Roger Dodd, Robin Bullough, and Alexander Mikhailov.

Effects of Temperature and Hole Drilling on Adhesively Bonded Single-Lap Joints

Arikan, Volkan; Dogan, Akar; Dogan, Tolga; Sabanci, Eray; Al-Shamary, Adel Kadum Jassim

In this study, the load-carrying capacity of a single-lap joint bonded by an adhesive was determined experimentally. Glass fiber-epoxy composite material was chosen as adherends and Loctite (R) 9466 A&B2 was used as adhesive. The vacuum assisted resin infusion method (VARIM) was used to manufacture composites. In this experimental study, the effects of hole drilling and temperature were investigated. Five hole configurations and three temperatures (room temperature, 50 degrees C, and 80 degrees C) were considered. The results show that hole drilling elevate the failure load and when the temperature increases the load-carrying capacity decreases.

Automatic Mining of Numerical Classification Rules with Parliamentary Optimization Algorithm

    Kiziloluk, Soner; Alatas, Bilal

In recent years, classification rules mining has been one of the most important data mining tasks. In this study, one of the newest social-based metaheuristic methods, Parliamentary Optimization Algorithm (POA), is firstly used for automatically mining of comprehensible and accurate classification rules within datasets which have numerical attributes. Four different numerical datasets have been selected from UCI data warehouse and classification rules of high quality have been obtained. Furthermore, the results obtained from designed POA have been compared with the results obtained from four different popular classification rules mining algorithms used in WEKA. Although POA is very new and no applications in complex data mining problems have been performed, the results seem promising. The used objective function is very flexible and many different objectives can easily be added to. The intervals of the numerical attributes in the rules have been automatically found without any a priori process, as done in other classification rules mining algorithms, which causes the modification of datasets.

THE OTTOMAN BERATS OF THE GREEK ORTHODOX PATRIRACH OF JERUSALEM (1872-1931)

    Satis, Ihsan; Ceyhan, Muhammed

Ottoman Berats (charters(1)) were official documents issued by Sultans delineating the tasks, powers, exemptions and concessions granted to Greek Orthodox Patriarchs to be the applicable within the jurisdiction of the Patriarchs. The Berat also showed that the Patriarch was elected by the Synod and approved by the Sultan. A Patriarch who did not have Berat could not perform his duties or exercise executive authority. This article critically examines the Berats of the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem in the period 1873-1931. These Berats are analysed in terms of their contents as well as in connection to the way non-Muslims were subject to rules which applied to the domestic relations of the Greek Orthodox community and to public law areas which came within the scope of Sharia law.

Stripping voltammetric analysis of dicofol on graphene-modified glassy carbon electrode

Koçak, Berna; Er, Engin; Çelikkan, Huseyin

This study is related to the development of a highly sensitive and selective electrode for the electroanalysis of dicofol (DCF) by the modification of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with graphene (GR) nanosheets. GR was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electrochemical methods. The electrochemical reduction of DCF was observed on both bare GCE and GR-modified GCE (GRE). The electrochemical reaction of DCF on GRE was observed to be an adsorption controlled. Differential pulse stripping voltammetry was chosen in the electrochemical analysis of DCF, and two linear calibration ranges from 5.0 x 10(-8) to 5.0 x 10(-7) M and from 5.0 x 10(-7) to 4.2 x 10(-4) M were obtained with a low detection limit of 1.08 x 10(-7) M (N = 5) under the optimized experimental conditions. The electrode developed was successfully used to monitor dicofol in a series of spiked samples.

Solutions of Nonlinear Fractional Differential Equations Systems through an Implementation of the Variational Iteration Method

Baskonus, Haci Mehmet; Belgacem, Fethi Bin Muhammad; Bulut, Hasan; Cattani, C; Srivastava, HM; Yang, XJ

In this book chapter, the Variational Iteration Method is used to solve systems of nonlinear fractional differential equations. Implementations with two separate nonlinear fractional differential equations systems illustrate a high degree of effectiveness. In the absence of explicit analytical methods, the Variational Iterative Method turns out to be a powerful tool to understand the behavior of nonlinear fractional differential equations and systems. Numerical solutions plots are obtained for each system via the Mathematica Symbolic Algebra Software 9.

Experimental and numerical analysis of RC structure with two leaf cavity wall subjected to shake table

Onat, Onur; Lourenço, Paulo B.; Koçak, Ali

This paper presents finite element (FE) based pushover analysis of a reinforced concrete structure with a two-leaf cavity wall (TLCW) to estimate the performance level of this structure. In addition to this, an unreinforced masonry (URM) model was selected for comparison. Simulations and analyses of these structures were performed using the DIANA FE program. The mentioned structures were selected as two storeys and two bays. The dimensions of the structures were scaled 1: 1.5 according to the Cauchy Froude similitude law. A shake table experiment was implemented on the reinforced concrete structure with the two-leaf cavity wall (TLCW) at the National Civil Engineering Laboratory (LNEC) in Lisbon, Portugal. The model that simulates URM was not experimentally studied. This structure was modelled in the same manner as the TLCW. The purpose of this virtual model is to compare the respective performances. Two nonlinear analyses were performed and compared with the experimental test results. These analyses were carried out in two phases. The research addresses first the analysis of a structure with only reinforced concrete elements, and secondly the analysis of the same structure with reinforced concrete elements and infill walls. Both researches consider static loading and pushover analysis. The experimental pushover curve was plotted by the envelope of the experimental curve obtained on the basis of the shake table records. Crack patterns, failure modes and performance curves were plotted for both models. Finally, results were evaluated on the basis of the current regulation ASCE/SEI 41-06.

The aim of this work was to determine the seasonal changes in the activities of selected biomarkers in Capoeta umbla (Heckel, 1843) caught from Uzuncayir Dam Lake (Tunceli, Turkey) and to evaluate the effects of environmental factors on these activities. Fish were sampled on seasonal basis, and superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase activities and levels of glutathione and malondialdehyde in gills were determined. Significant variations of oxidative stress biomarkers were observed between seasons and sites. The results of this study show that seasonal variations of oxidative stress responses and lipid peroxidation in gills of C. umbla are sensitive to the contaminants present in water of Uzuncayir Dam Lake and selected parameters are in valuable biomarkers for monitoring of water systems, since they give an early warning signal of effects of xenobiotics on aquatic organisms at molecular levels which help to prevent their effects at organismal level. ANTIOXIDANT RESPONSES OF RAINBOW TROUT (Oncorhynchus mykiss) GILLS AFTER EXPOSURE TO HYDROGEN PEROXIDE

Seker, Engin; Ispir, Unal; Yonar, Serpil Mise; Yonar, M. Enis; Turk, Cebrahil

We evaluated antioxidant responses of Oncorhynchus mykiss, experimentally exposed to different concentrations of hidrogen peroxide (H2O2). Different concentrations of H2O2 (50 and 100 ppm) were administrated to the fish for 30, 60 and 90 min. Samples of the gill were collected at the end of the experiment, and analysed for their oxidant antioxidant status, including the malondialdehyde (MDA) level, the catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity as well as the reduced glutathione (GSH) concentration. Results obtained showed that H2O2 significantly increased MDA level. Compared to controls, GSH level and GSH-Px and CAT activities were significantly reduced in the fish that were exposed to different concentrations of H2O2. The current data suggest that H2O2 has an oxidative-stress-inducing potential in fish. The various parameters studied in this investigation can also be used as biomarkers of exposure to H2O2.

Automatic classification of harmonic data using k-means and least square support vector machine

Eristi, Huseyin; Tümen, Vedat; Yildirim, Ozal; Eristi, Belkis; Demir, Yakup

In this paper, an effective classification approach to classify harmonic data has been proposed. In the proposed classifier approach, harmonic data obtained through a 3-phase system have been classified by using k-means and least square support vector machine (LS-SVM) models. In order to obtain class details regarding harmonic data, a k-means clustering algorithm has been applied to these data first. The training of the LS-SVM model has been realized with the class details obtained through the k-means algorithm. To increase the efficiency of the LS-SVM model, the regularization and kernel parameters of this model have been determined with a grid search method and the training phase has been realized. Backpropagation neural network and J48 decision tree classifiers have been applied to the same data and results have been obtained for the purpose of comparing the performance of the LS-SVM model. The real data obtained from the output of distribution system have been used to assess the performance of the proposed classifier system. The obtained results and comparisons suggest that the proposed classifier system approach is quite efficient at classifying harmonic data.

Classification of Kashar Cheeses Based on Their Chemical, Color and Instrumental Textural Characteristics Using Principal Component and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis

Eroglu, Ali; Dogan, Mahmut; Toker, Omer Said; Yilmaz, Mustafa Tahsin

Principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis were applied to investigate physicochemical and instrumental textural properties of fresh kashar cheese. Four different principal components sufficiently explained the variability in the cheese samples. In addition, hierarchical cluster analysis was performed to group the kashar cheese samples regarding physicochemical and instrumental textural properties. Instrumental textural properties indicated greater variability than chemical composition of cheese samples. Principal component analysis revealed that color parameters were positively correlated with textural and chemical parameters. The results of this study revealed that other parameters rather than chemical composition would be effective on the instrumental textural properties. It was proved that principal component analysis was a very effective statistical tool to determine quality of cheese samples. According to the principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis results, the attributes defining the kashar cheese samples were determined to be primarily the texture profile analysis parameters.

    Albayrak, S.; Cinar, A. E. Korkmaz; Paksoy, M. Y.; Aksoy, A.

The antioxidant activities of methanol (ME), ethanol (EE), water (WE) and ethyl acetate (EAE) extracts of four Inula helenium L. taxa (I. helenium ssp. orygalis (Boiss.) Grierson, I. helenium ssp. pseudohelenium Grierson, I. helenium ssp. turcarasemosa Grierson and I. helenium ssp. vanensis Grierson) were investigated. The phosphomolybdenum assay, beta-carotene linoleate bleaching and DPPH radical scavenging activity were used to evaluate the antioxidant capacity. The total phenolic contents determined by Folin-Ciocalteu assay of the extracts ranged from 4.18 to 102.91 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g dry extract. The extracts showed considerable effect on reducing the oxidation of beta-carotene. The highest radical scavenging activity was obtained for ME of I. helenium ssp. orygalis in DPPH assay. ME, EE and EAE of four Inula helenium taxa showed significant antibacterial activity against 13 bacteria tested. WEs had no inhibitory effect against bacteria tested except for I. helenium ssp. orygalis. EE of I. helenium ssp. orygalis was only effective against C. albicans.

An Effective Schema for Solving Some Nonlinear Partial Differential Equation Arising In Nonlinear Physics

    Baskonus, Haci Mehmet; Bulut, Hasan

In this paper, a new computational algorithm called the Improved Bernoulli sub-equation function method has been proposed. This algorithm is based on the Bernoulli Sub-ODE method. Firstly, the nonlinear evaluation equations used for representing various physical phenomena are converted into ordinary differential equations by using various wave transformations. In this way, nonlinearity is preserved and represent nonlinear physical problems. The nonlinearity of physical problems together with the derivations is seen as the secret key to solve the general structure of problems. The proposed analytical schema, which is newly submitted to the literature, has been expressed comprehensively in this paper. The analytical solutions, application results, and comparisons are presented by plotting the two and three dimensional surfaces of analytical solutions obtained by using the methods proposed for some important nonlinear physical problems. Finally, a conclusion has been presented by mentioning the important discoveries in this study.
