This is the first study about removal of lead (Pb(II)) from energy drinks. In this paper, food waste, namely eggshell (hydroxyapatite) utilization, was used to remove Pb(II) from mineral water and energy drinks. Mineral water and energy drinks were chosen for removal of lead since the latter is severely hazardous to human health even in small amounts. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was performed to optimize the application process by practice of the quadratic model united with the Central Composite Design (CCD) and quadratic combined program was utilized to study the most effective parameters on aforementioned liquids. Through the application of variance analysis (ANOVA) factors critical to removing of lead were identified for each experimental design response. Maximum adsorption capacity of eggshell was achieved as 923 mg g(-1) for Pb(II). The obtained optimum conditions were applied to drinks. Results showed that used adsorbent was quite effective in removing Pb(II) from drinks. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Esen, Yuksel; Dogan, Zulfu Murat
The objective of this study is to investigate the usability of siderite aggregates mentioned above as a heavy-weight aggregate in the heavy-weight concrete production and their effects on physical properties of the heavy-weight concrete mixture. For this purpose, normal-weight aggregate content was decreased at the rate of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% by volume of the concrete mixture prepared and mixtures were prepared by its substitution with siderite aggregate at the same rates. Based on the increase in siderite aggregate in the concrete mixture, a considerable increase in unit weight, compressive strength and tensile strength of concrete was obtained. Plate-shaped concrete specimens obtained from combined normal-weight and heavy-weight aggregates were exposed to radiation with different X-ray source (118 keV, 164 keV) and Co-60 (1250 keV) beam source at cekmece Nuclear Facility. It is clearly seen that the concrete mixture containing siderite aggregate improved 70% radiation absorption characteristics compared to that of the concrete mixture without siderite aggregate. - MakaleYalnız künye2016Scopus SJRQ1Determination of the effect of lead mine waste aggregate on some concrete properties and radiation shielding
Çullu, Mustafa; Ertas, Haydar
The aim of this study is to determine the radiation absorption capacity of concretes produced from lead mine waste which cannot be processed economically as the lead content is low in the mines they are extracted. Lead mine waste (tallow) were exchanged at ratios of 25%, 50% and 75% respectively with barite and limestone aggregates and samples were prepared at C16, C25 and 05 classes. The compressive strength and the unit weight of the prepared samples were determined. The linear absorption coefficients of prepared concrete samples at 662 keV of energy were determined. In addition the relationship between the radiation absorption capacity and the compressive strength-unit weight was investigated. The experiments demonstrated that best absorption was in concrete samples with 100% barite content (100B). On the other hand in the concrete samples prepared from the mixture of limestone and lead mine waste aggregates, it was observed that radiation absorption capacity decreased due to decreasing amount of barite. In concrete samples prepared from the mixture of lead mine waste and limestone aggregates, it was observed that radiation absorption capacity increased due to increasing amount of mine waste aggregates in the concrete. As a result it was observed that lead mine waste aggregates do not absorb as much radiation as barite aggregates depending on the ratio increase of lead mine waste in the aggregate added to the concrete mixture. However the absorbed radiation amount was observed to be higher compared to limestone aggregates. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Gürsul, Isil; Gueven, Alper; Grohmann, Anne; Knorr, Dietrich
Pulsed electric field (PEF), among numerous stresses, provides a large potential as an external stimulus to enhance secondary metabolite biosynthesis from plant cell cultures. PEF treatment was combined with the sub-culturing technique to increase phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) activity, the key enzyme for secondary metabolite synthesis from tomato cell culture. In reference to the analysis, maximum accumulation of total phenolic (TP) compounds in the cells was determined as a function of stress reaction time (SRT). Also, PEF application increased PAL activity. PEF resulted in an increase in the porosity of the cell membrane, thus decreasing cell vitality. On the other hand, SRT decreased vitality, while increasing TP content. Sub-culturing enhanced the cell structure and improved the cell membrane permeability. PEF treatment potentially offers an alternative to other methods for increasing PAL activity in plant cell cultures. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2016Scopus SJRQ1A modified human reliability analysis for cargo operation in single point mooring (SPM) off-shore units
Akyuz, Emre; Celik, Erkan
A Single Point Mooring (SPM) unit is a widely recognised off-shore terminal facility in the marine industry since a considerable amount of liquid cargoes can easily be transferred into huge tankers such as VLCCs or ULCCs. Although the system presents high safety standards, any minor accidents due to human error may cause serious harm to the marine environment, human life and the commodity itself. Therefore, nominated crew on-board the tanker and the unit should be very careful during SPM cargo operations. At this point, human reliability plays a critical role in avoiding potential operational or technical failures. In this context, the aim of this paper is to perform a comprehensive human reliability assessment during cargo operations of an SPM unit to enhance maritime safety in off-shore units. The paper prompts a methodological extension of human error assessment and reduction technique (HEART) by incorporating interval type-2 fuzzy sets which overcome more of the uncertainty of experts' judgement and expression in decision-making. The proposed approach not only provides theoretical insight but practical contribution to human reliability assessment in the marine and off-shore industries. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Say, Yakup; Aksakal, Bunyamin; Dikici, Burak
REX-734 stainless steel alloy was coated with hydroxyapatite (HA)-silicon dioxide (SiO2) composite (hybride) coatings by using the sol-gel method. Surface morphologies, adhesion resistances and corrosion behaviors of the coatings were examined and the characterization of the coatings was performed by using XRD, SEM, and EDS. It was observed that porous and crack-free surface morphology enhanced adhesion strength of the coatings. Through the shear tests, it was found that the adhesion resistance was 25.14 MPa in HA coatings and 25.47 MPa in HA-SiO2 coatings. Corrosion analyses of the coatings were performed by using potentiodynamic polarization (PDS) tests. It was determined that corrosion dimples formed on the coating surface and the corrosion resistance in HA+SiO2 coatings increased with decreasing porosity; however, in the further steps of corrosion, it reached to the base material by causing a pitting effect on the coated surface. - MakaleYalnız künye2016Scopus SJRQ1A fuzzy multi criteria risk assessment based on decision matrix technique: A case study for aluminum industry
Gul, Muhammet; Guneri, Ali Fuat
Decision matrix risk-assessment (DMRA) technique is a systematic approach widely used in the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) risk assessment. In a typical matrix method approach, a measure of risk value is obtained by evaluating two risk factors as the likelihood of a hazard and the severity of the hazard when it arises. In this paper, a fuzzy approach enabling experts to use linguistic variables for evaluating two factors which are the parameters of matrix method is proposed to deal with shortcomings of a crisp risk score calculation and to decrease the inconsistency in decision making. The parameters likelihood and severity related to the hazards in an aluminum plate manufacturing plant are weighted by using Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP), then the orders of priority of 23 various hazard groups are determined by using Fuzzy TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method. As a follow-up study of the case application, the proposed risk assessment methodology is applied for hazard types in each department of the plant. Depending on the hazard control hierarchy, control measures are overtaken for the hazards that are placed at first of intra-department rankings. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Theileria annulata is an apicomplexan parasite which is responsible for tropical theileriosis in cattle. Due to resistance of T. annulata against commonly used antitheilerial drug, new drug candidates should be identified urgently. Enolase might be a druggable protein candidate which has an important role in glycolysis, and could also be related to several cellular functions as a moonlight protein. In this study; we have described three-dimensional models of open and closed conformations of T. annulata enolase by homology modeling method for the first time with the comprehensive domain, active site and docking analyses. Our results show that the enolase has similar folding patterns within enolase superfamily with conserved catalytic loops and active site residues. We have described specific insertions, possible plasminogen binding sites, electrostatic potential surfaces and positively charged pockets as druggable regions in T. annulate enolase. - MakaleAçık Erişim2015Scopus SJRQ1A fuzzy DEMATEL method to evaluate critical operational hazards during gas freeing process in crude oil tankers
Akyuz, Emre; Celik, Erkan
Gas freeing process in crude oil tanker ships is widely recognized one of the most hazardous aspects of shipboard operations. Although the process provides practical benefits to ship by removing the explosive or poisonous gases from the cargo tanks and raising the oxygen level up to 21 percent, the consequences of failure may cause serious damage to human health, marine environment and cargo. Therefore, the crew exercise utmost care and become aware of the potential hazards in gas freeing process. In this context, this paper provides a fuzzy DEMATEL (Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory) method to evaluate critical operational hazards in gas freeing process. While the DEMATEL method enables to identify and analyse the potential hazards of gas freeing process with respect to causal effect relation diagram, fuzzy sets deal with the uncertainty in decision-making and human judgements through the DEMATEL. Thus, the hybrid approach provides smart solution for safety practitioners to prevent critical hazards in gas freeing process. The results of the research will contribute to maritime safety at sea and prevention of environment pollution as well as loss of life on-board crude oil tankers ships. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of lactic acid against Shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli (O157:1-17 and non-O157 serogroups including O103, O111, O145 and O26) at different conditions. Soybean sprouts and spinach leaves inoculated with each serogroup of E. coli (similar to 7.00 + 1.00 log(10) cfu/g) were treated with the lactic acid solutions at different concentrations (0% (control), 1.5%, 2.0%, or 2.5%) and at different temperatures (20, 40, or 50 degrees C) for 3 min. Results indicated that regardless of the treatment temperature, no significant reduction in the numbers of any serogroup occurred in the control group (0%) (p > 0.05). However, lactic acid at concentration of 1.5%, 2% and 2.5% was found to be effective against all organisms tested. There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) between E. coli O157:H7 and non-O157 STEC serogroups at any treatment group. The highest reductions (ca. 400 log(10) cfu/g) of all serotypes in both produces were observed after immersing into 2.5% lactic acid at 50 degrees C. The results of this study showed that decontamination of fresh produces such as spinach and soybean sprout with lactic acid solutions prepared at mild temperatures (40 degrees C and 50 degrees C) might be an effective safety measure in preventing public health risks associated with these products contaminated with STEC. Eristi, Huseyin; Yildirim, Ozal; Eristi, Belkis; Demir, Yakup
In this paper, a new S-Transform and Extreme Learning Machine (ST-ELM)-based event recognition approach for the purpose of classifying power quality (PQ) event signals automatically has been proposed. In this approach, the distinctive features of the PQ event signals have been obtained with the S-Transform-based feature extraction. The feature vector obtained with feature extraction has been applied as input to the ELM classifier. Ten different classification procedures were determined within the framework of this study to assess the performance of the ELM classifier on PQ event data. Real PQ event data and synthetic PQ event data obtained from MATIAB/Simulink environment have been used in these procedures. Also, three different PQ event data sets, which are formed by adding noises of 20, 30 and 50 dB to the synthetic PQ event data respectively, have been used in order to assess the performance of the proposed approach on noisy conditions. According to the results of performance evaluations, the proposed ST-ELM-based PQ event recognition system has a very high performance of recognizing PQ event data. Besides, classification of noisy data showed that the proposed approach is robust at recognizing noisy data. The performance of the ST-ELM-based recognition system on PQ data shows that this approach has an effective recognition structure that can be used in real power systems. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. An organic-inorganic rectifying contact was fabricated by forming a thin film of a Zinc Phthalocyanine (ZnPc) derivative, Zinc 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octakis(octyloxy)-29H, 31H-phthalocyanine (oc-ZnPc), on a p-Si wafer and evaporating Al on the structure. The current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements of Al/oc-ZnPc/p-Si structure were taken in dark at room temperature. The I-V measurements proved that the structure showed excellent rectification. Some basic diode parameters like ideality factor and barrier height were calculated from lnI-V plot. Ideality factor and barrier height values were found as 144 and 0.78 eV, respectively. The series resistance value of the structure was determined as 5.46 k Omega by means of Norde functions. The C-V measurements were taken for various frequencies and it was seen that the capacitance value decreased with increasing frequency. In addition I-V measurements of the Al/oc-ZaPc/p-Si/Al were repeated under light which had illumination intensity of 40-100 mW/cm(2). It was observed that reverse bias current of the diode increased with the light intensity. Therefore, the structure showed photodiode characteristics and it can be used for electrical and optoelectronic applications. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The effect of Tween 20 on antimicrobial effects of acidic (lactic acid), neutral (cetyl pyridinium chloride) and alkaline (trisodium phosphate) decontaminants to reduce the numbers of Salmonella inoculated to broiler carcasses were studied. In addition, survival of Salmonella in waste decontamination fluids was investigated. For this purpose, an average of 7 +/- 1 log(10) cfu/ml Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium cocktail was surface-inoculated on to a total of 110 broiler carcasses. Contaminated carcasses were immersed in to tap water (control), lactic acid (LA) (1-2%), cetyl pyridinium chloride (CPC) (0.5-1%), or trisodium phosphate (TSP) (8%) and the combinations of these treatments with Tween 20 (TW20) (0.5%) for 15 min. Results indicated that. Salmonella numbers significantly decreased (P < 0.05) in all groups, except control and 1% LA. No significant difference was found between treatments with and without TW20. In waste decontamination fluids, 6.68 and 3.41 log(10) cfu/ml of Salmonella were recovered from control and CPC groups, respectively, while no viable Salmonella cell was detected in LA and TSP groups by direct plating. It was concluded that regardless of TW20, the antimicrobials tested were effective to reduce Salmonella in poultry carcasses. However, the pathogen may survive in neutral waste decontamination fluid such as CPC and can pose a risk for consumer health by contaminating the plant environment. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Eristi, Huseyin
This paper proposes a new fault diagnosis approach based on combined wavelet transform and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system for fault section identification, classification and location in a series compensated transmission line. It performs an effective feature extraction approach based on norm entropy in order to obtain the features represented main frequency, harmonic and transient characteristics of the fault signals. The proposed method uses the samples of fault voltages and currents for one cycle duration from the inception of fault. The feasibility of the proposed method has been tested on a 400 kV, 300 km series compensated transmission line for all the ten types of faults using MATLAB/Simulink for a large data set of 23,436 fault cases comprising of all the 10 types of faults. Fault signals varying with fault resistance, fault inception angle, fault distance, load angle, percentage compensation level and source impedance are applied to the proposed algorithm. The results also indicate that the proposed method is robust to wide variation in system conditions and has higher fault diagnosis accuracy with regard to the other approaches in the literature for this problem. Eristi, Huseyin; Yildirim, Ozal; Eristi, Belkis; Demir, Yakup
In this paper, a new optimal feature selection based power quality event recognition system is proposed for the classification of power quality events. While Apriori algorithm is capable of processing categorical data, an effective feature vector, which represents distinctive features of digital power quality event data, has been obtained by means of the proposed k-means based Apriori algorithm feature selection approach. The proposed k-means based Apriori algorithm feature selection approach is presented with a power quality event recognition system. In the power quality event recognition system, normalization and segmentation processes have been applied to three-phase event voltage signals. Using 9-level multiresolution analysis, wavelet transform coefficients of the event signals have been obtained. By applying nine different feature extraction processes to these coefficients, a 90 dimensional feature vector belonging to three-phase event voltage signals has been extracted. Optimal feature vector has been obtained by applying the k-means based Apriori algorithm feature selection approach to the obtained feature vector, which has been applied as the last step to the input of the least squares support vector machine classifier and recognition performance results have been obtained. Real power quality event data have been used to evaluate the performance of the proposed feature selection approach and power quality event recognition system. According to the results, the proposed k-means based Apriori algorithm feature selection approach and power quality event recognition system are efficient, reliable and applicable and classify three-phase event types with a high degree of accuracy.
