Unal, Ilkay; Egri, Sinan
This study describes an eco-friendly procedure to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using fresh and dried stem extract of Rheum ribes. AgNPs formation was confirmed using UV-vis spectrometry. The effects of parameters such as temperature, reaction time, pH, AgNO3 concentration, and plant extract/AgNO3 ratio on NP formation were evaluated. Morphology and structural features of the particles were characterized using SEM, TEM, XRD, and FTIR. The average size, polydispersity index, and zeta potential were determined using DLS. After characterization, among the two AgNP samples, selected one; AgNP sample synthesized by dried Rheum ribes stem extracts (d-AgNPs), which exhibited narrow size distribution and high surface plasmon resonance in the range of 435-445 nm for toxicity assessment. The cytotoxic effect of d-AgNPs on HUVECs cells was evaluated with MTT analysis. Accumulation measurements were made in three periods as 24, 48, and 72 h and elimination values were examined at +24 h using ICP-MS analysis

- MakaleYalnız künye2018Scopus SJRQ3Kinetics behavior of methylene blue onto agricultural waste
Sarici-Özdemir, Cigdem; Kiliç, Fatih
In the present work, investigations on a potential use of agricultural waste for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from wastewater are presented. Adsorption kinetics of MB has been studied using reaction-based and diffusion-based models. Three kinetic models, namely pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and the Elovich are analyzed at the temperature of 298 K for the reaction-based model. The kinetic studies showed that the data were well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Intraparticle diffusion, external-film diffusion, and internal-pore diffusion models characterizing MB were obtained. The results suggested that the agricultural waste has a high potential to be used as an effective adsorbent for MB adsorption. Pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and the Elovich models were employed to describe the desorption mechanism. The experimental results showed that the pseudo-second-order equation is the best model.

- MakaleYalnız künye2017Scopus SJRQ2Occupational health and safety risk assessment in hospitals: A case study using two-stage fuzzy multi-criteria approach
Gul, Muhammet; Ak, M. Fatih; Guneri, Ali Fuat
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is a basis to reduce occupational accidents in an acceptable level, and it covers employee health, safety, and welfare in the workplaces. Hospitals as the largest employer group in healthcare industry in Turkey face major hazards categorized as chemical, biological, physical, ergonomic, and psychosocial risks. Although Turkey demonstrates rapid economic growth, OHS practices have not been fully put into practice, and necessary attention has not been paid to the health industry. For this reason, this paper aims to assess risks for health staff, contribute for planning of health services, and enhance regulations. A case study was carried out in a leading hospital in Turkey using a two-stage fuzzy multi-criteria approach, which provides more consistency in decision-making process and gives an appropriate final rank of hazard types. Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) is used in weighing five risk parameters, which are severity, occurrence, undetectability, sensitivity to maintenance non-execution, and sensitivity to personal protective equipment (PPE) non-utilization. The fuzzy VIKOR (FVIKOR) approach is then applied for prioritization of hazard types in each department of the hospital. On conclusion of the hazard control hierarchy, measures are overtaken for the hazards, and areas open for improvement are presented.

- MakaleYalnız künye2016Scopus SJRQ3Optimization of Cadmium Removal from Water by Hydroxyapatite Using Experimental Design Methodology
Ince, Olcay Kaplan; Ince, Muharrem; Karaaslan, Nagihan M.; Yonten, Vahap
The presence of cadmium in water is a serious threat to the environment. The removal of cadmium using hydroxyapatite as an adsorbent was studied in an aqueous system. Hydroxyapatite was prepared to process the adsorption of cadmium from aqueous solution. Experimental design methodology and response surface methodology (RSM) with a quadratic model associated with central composite design was used to optimize the pH, initial heavy metal concentration, final volume, and adsorbent dosage for the removal of cadmium. Analysis of variance identified significant factors on each parameter. RSM indicated that a pH of 8.5, a sample volume of 166 mL, an adsorbent of dosage 0.57 g, and a contact time of 82 min were optimal for the adsorption of Cd(II). Under these conditions, the removal of Cd(II) was 895 mg g(-1).

- MakaleYalnız künye2016Scopus SJRQ3Experimental and modeling studies of methylene blue adsorption onto particles of peanut shell
Kiliç, Fatih; Sarici-Özdemir, Cigdem
In this study, adsorption of methylene blue from aqueous solution onto peanut shell has been investigated. Experimental data obtained from dye adsorption have been studied by five two-parameter (Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich, Temkin, and Frumkin) and five three-parameter (Redlich-Peterson, Sips, Toth, Radke-Prausnitz, and Koble-Corrigan) isotherm models. Eight nonlinear error functions (sum squares errors, hybrid fractional error function, Marquardt's percent standard deviation, average relative error, sum of absolute error, the coefficient of determination, nonlinear chi-square test, and standard deviation of relative errors) were examined for isotherm equations. In order to explain the adsorption kinetics fit of pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, and intraparticle kinetic models were used. The best fitting isotherm model was the Radke-Prausnitz and kinetics model was pseudo-second-order. Adsorption experiment showed that the maximum capacity of agricultural waste for methylene blue was 67.57 L.g(-1) at 25 degrees C.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2015Scopus SJRQ1Classification of Kashar Cheeses Based on Their Chemical, Color and Instrumental Textural Characteristics Using Principal Component and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis
Eroglu, Ali; Dogan, Mahmut; Toker, Omer Said; Yilmaz, Mustafa Tahsin
Principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis were applied to investigate physicochemical and instrumental textural properties of fresh kashar cheese. Four different principal components sufficiently explained the variability in the cheese samples. In addition, hierarchical cluster analysis was performed to group the kashar cheese samples regarding physicochemical and instrumental textural properties. Instrumental textural properties indicated greater variability than chemical composition of cheese samples. Principal component analysis revealed that color parameters were positively correlated with textural and chemical parameters. The results of this study revealed that other parameters rather than chemical composition would be effective on the instrumental textural properties. It was proved that principal component analysis was a very effective statistical tool to determine quality of cheese samples. According to the principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis results, the attributes defining the kashar cheese samples were determined to be primarily the texture profile analysis parameters.

- MakaleYalnız künye2014Scopus SJRQ3EXPLORING THE OPTIMUM CONDITIONS FOR MAXIMIZING THE MICROBIAL GROWTH OF Candida intermedia BY RESPONSE SURFACE METHODOLOGY
Yönten, Vahap; Aktas, Nahit
Exploring optimum and cost-efficient medium composition for microbial growth of Candida intermedia Y-1981 yeast culture growing on whey was studied by applying a multistep response surface methodology. In the first step, Plackett-Burman (PB) design was utilized to determine the most significant fermentation medium factors on microbial growth. The medium temperature, sodium chloride and lactose concentrations were determined as the most important factors. Subsequently, the optimum combinations of the selected factors were explored by steepest ascent (SA) and central composite design (CCD). The optimum values for lactose and sodium chloride concentrations and medium temperature were found to be 18.4g/L, 0.161g/L, and 32.4 degrees C, respectively. Experiments carried out at the optimum conditions revealed a maximum specific growth rate of 0.090 1/hr; 42% of total lactose removal was achieved in 24h of fermentation time. The obtained results were finally verified with batch reactor experiments carried out under the optimum conditions evaluated.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2014Scopus SJRQ1Effect of Swirl Generator Inserted Into a Tube on Exergy Transfer: Decaying Flow
Kurtbas, I.; Guelcimen, F.; Kiliçarslan, A.; Kaya, M.
This study experimentally investigates the effect of conical injector type swirl generator inserts on heat and exergy transfer in a uniform heat flux tube for turbulence regime. One hundred twenty watts of heat are applied by coiling a flexible silicone heater on the tube (copper pipe) with an inside diameter of 62mm and length of 1,200mm. The conical injector type swirl generator has a conical shape, which is similar to a funnel, with angle (alpha) of 30 degrees, 45 degrees, and 60 degrees. Circular holes are drilled on the conical injector type swirl generator as three different cross-sectional areas (A(h)). The total areas (A(t) =N.A(h)) of the holes on the conical injector type swirl generator equal each other. Because of this, the three different holes numbers (N) are produced. Flow directors having three different angles (beta=30 degrees, 60 degrees, and 90 degrees) to radial direction are attached to every one of the holes. This study is a typical example for decaying flow. Reynolds number (Re) was varied from 10,000 to 35,000, so the flow was considered as only a turbulent regime. All experiments were conducted with air accordingly; Prandtl number was approximately fixed at 0.71. The local and average heat transfer Nusselt number (Nu(h)) and exergy transfer Nusselt number (Nu(e)) are calculated and discussed in this article. It is found that the Nu(h) increases with an increase in Reynolds number, director angle (beta), and director diameter (d) but with a decrease in the conical injector type swirl generator angle (alpha). However, Nu(e) decreases depending on the same independent parameters.

Ögretmen, Fatih; Gölbasi, Selami; Inanan, Burak E.; Kizak, Volkan; Kayim, Murathan
In this study, the efficacy of four doses of clove oil and eugenol were compared to sedate fingerling Shabut Barbus grypus to various stages of sedation and recovery. The results from the present study indicated that effective concentrations were at 50L/L for eugenol (induction time: 58 8s; recovery time: 199 +/- 15s [mean +/- SD]) and clove oil (induction time: 76 +/- 6s; recovery time: 161 +/- 34s). The induction times decreased significantly with the increasing concentrations of clove oil and eugenol, while recovery times increased with increasing concentrations of anesthetic (P < 0.05). Exposure of fish to 75 or 100L/L clove oil or to 50, 75, or 100L/L eugenol resulted in mean induction times 1min. Fish did not become fully sedated within 3min when treated with 25L/L clove oil. Other concentrations of both anesthetics, fish reached to full induction at 3min and recovered from anesthesia 5min. Our results showed the clove oil and eugenol are effective anesthetics for fingerling Shabut when used at concentrations of 50-100L/L. Received March 25, 2013; accepted July 5, 2013

Can, Erkan; Karacalar, Ulviye; Saka, Sahin; Firat, Kursat
The risk of fish pathogen transmission via eggs can be reduced by disinfection in ozonated seawater. The aim of this study was to determine the suitable conditions for ozone disinfection of the eggs of gilthead seabream Sparus aurata, sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax, red porgy Pagrus pagrus, and common dentex Dentex dentex. The eggs were disinfected with a concentration (C) of 0.5 mg of ozone/L of water at four different exposure times (T = 2, 4, 8, and 16 min). The hatching rate was determined in triplicate for each treatment. Bacterial colonies were counted on tryptic soy agar and thiosulfate-citrate-bile salts-sucrose agar. At the end of the experiment, bacterial load and hatching rate were assessed together to determine the optimal ozone treatment values, which were estimated in CT units (i.e., C [= 0.5 mg/L] x T [min]). Optimal values were CT 2-4 (T = 4-8 min; 18 degrees C) for gilthead seabream and red porgy, CT 2 (T = 4 min; 18 degrees C) for common dentex, and CT 4 (T = 8 min; 15 degrees C) for sea bass.
