Şahal, Hakan; Aydoğmuş, Ercan; Arslanoğlu, Hasan
The aim of this study is to investigate various thermophysical properties of modified palm oil-amine (MPOA) reinforced biocomposites to optimize these materials to meet the requirements of lightness and insulation. The effects of MPOA addition to biocomposites on bulk density, surface hardness, thermal conductivity coefficient, and activation energy have been evaluated. In addition, the structural and physical properties of these biocomposites are aimed to determine their potential use as lightweight and thermal insulation materials. The results show that MPOA incorporation significantly affects the bulk density, Shore A hardness, thermal conductivity, and thermal stability of biocomposites. The addition of MPOA provides significant benefits for lightweight biomaterials by reducing bulk density. However, high MPOA content decreases the surface hardness of the biocomposite, and with zirconium silicate (ZrSiO4), this drawback is eliminated and the curing time is reduced. Increasing MPOA ratios also improve the insulation properties of biocomposites by reducing the thermal conductivity coefficient. Thermal decomposition experiment results show that higher MPOA content reduces thermal stability. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals that high levels of MPOA lead to increased surface porosity and irregularities, negatively affecting surface morphology. An optimal MPOA reinforcement level of 5 wt% provides a balance between desirable properties such as reduced density and improved thermal insulation while minimizing adverse morphological effects. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirms the presence of epoxy resin and the successful chemical modification of palm oil to create bioepoxy feedstock. MPOA reinforcement offers benefits such as reduced bulk density and improved thermal insulation while addressing challenges in surface morphology, mechanical properties, and thermal stability. The study concludes that biocomposites with 5 wt% MPOA provide optimum stability, making them suitable for applications requiring lightweight and thermally insulating materials without significantly compromising structural integrity. This research, the long-term performance of biocomposites, and future investigations into their potential applications will further expand their practical applicability.

Başgöz, Öyküm; Güngör, Ahmet; Güler, Ömer; Erdem, Emre
This study investigates the performance of high entropy alloys [Fe3Cr3Mn2NiV, HEA)] and high entropy oxides [(Fe3Cr3Mn2NiV)O4, HEO)] as electrode materials for supercapacitors. HEA is synthesized through mechanical alloying, followed by HEO forming via an oxidation process. XRD results demonstrate HEA comprises both amorphous and crystalline phases, whereas HEO has an entirely crystalline structure. SEM analyses showed HEA exhibits larger and irregular particles, whereas HEO displays a smaller and spherical morphology. EPR analyses revealed significant changes in defect structures and unpaired electron configurations during the transition from HEA to HEO. HEA is prone to diffusion-controlled processes due to their regular structure and strong magnetic interactions; however, HEO exhibits capacitive behavior based on surface redox reactions and pseudo-capacitive mechanisms due to their irregular structure and oxygen vacancies. CV analyses revealed that HEO contributes more capacitive via surface redox reactions, while GCPL results suggested that HEO demonstrated superior energy density (40.8 Wh kg−1) and power density (14.3 kW kg−1). Impedance analyses revealed that HEO exhibited reduced internal resistance and enhanced ion conductivity, whereas HEA demonstrated higher resistance and diffusion-controlled processes. In conclusion, HEA and HEO exhibit distinct energy storage mechanisms, and these materials can be optimized for supercapacitor applications.

Climate change and anthropogenic factors have a significant impact on rainfall variability. In this study, the trends of monthly total precipitation in the transboundary Euphrates-Tigris River Basin (ETRB), where these effects are intensely observed, were analyzed by trend analysis methods with various perspectives. After decomposing the monthly total rainfall series (1964–2021) obtained from 18 stations representing 12 months of the year, statistical (Mann-Kendall, Wilcoxon, Onyutha), graphical (Innovative Polygon Trend Analysis, IPTA), Trend Polygon Star Concept, TPSC), sub-trend (Onyutha) and spatial trend analyses were performed. Based on the results, it was observed that rainfall in the basin has significant spatial and temporal variability. A monotonic strong decreasing trend was observed in cold months with high rainfall, while an increasing trend was observed in warm months with low rainfall. Extreme rainfall during the winter months has shifted towards the end of the cold months. Graphical and statistical analysis methods have shown strong consistency in identifying monotonic trends. However, the implementation of various methods provides specific insight (transition, sub-trend, etc.) into the temporal and spatial variability of rainfall. Sub-trend analysis shows that rainfall characteristics in the cold months show a significant change before and after the 1990–2000 period. In warmer months, this variability is significantly affected by local and global driving forces. The central and marginal parts of the ETRB have different rainfall characteristics. During cold months, the monotonic trend (decreasing) is significant in the central part. In warm months, the monotonic trend (increasing) increases its intensity in the eastern parts.

Oxide dispersion-strengthened alloys have emerged as a highly effective solution to address the physical, structural, and shielding challenges faced by traditional alloys in nuclear environments. This study presents a comprehensive evaluation of the microstructural, mechanical, and radiation shielding properties of Yb2O3 oxide dispersion-strengthened 316L stainless steel composites at varying Yb2O3 concentrations such as 1%, 5%, 10%, and 20% by weight. XRD analysis revealed lattice distortions, with crystallite sizes decreasing from 11.2267 nm to 9.3351 nm. SEM/EDX analyses confirmed homogeneous Yb2O3 dispersion at lower concentrations, with agglomeration at 20% Yb2O3. The mass attenuation coefficient increased from 56.103 cm2/g to 65.919 cm2/g at 0.015 MeV, marking a 17.5% enhancement. HVL decreased by 40.68% at 0.2 MeV for the 20% Yb2O3 sample. Additionally, the 20% Yb2O3 composite showed nearly 33% lower transmission factor at 3.0 cm thickness and 0.662 MeV. It can be concluded that Yb2O3 reinforcement significantly enhances the microstructural, and gamma-ray attenuation properties of 316L-SS composites, positioning them as promising materials for advanced nuclear shielding and structural applications.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ3New Record of Peregriana labiata (Rossmässler, 1835) (Gastropoda: Lymnaeidae) in Kelkit Basin (NE Anatolia): Effect of Altitudes on Distribution and Morphological Characters
Kocabaş, Filiz Kutluyer; Kocabaş, Mehmet; Kara, Cemil; Bozali, Nuri; Gürlek, Mustafa Emre
Abstract: Peregriana labiata (Rossmässler, 1835) is a broadly distributed Palaearctic freshwater snail belonging to the family Lymnaeidae and it is an intermediate host of Fascioloides manga causing Fasciolosis as a snail-borne trematode disease. The disease negatively influences the livestock sector and human health with increasing prevalence in the last decades. As a helpful tool, geographical distribution of P. labiata was assessed in Kelkit Basin (North-East Anatolia) as a risk area for fasciolosis transmission. 85 sampling sites were sampled from different habitats in Kelkit Basin (NE Anatolia). The first evidence of P. labiata occurrence was revealed in the basin. In addition, the effects of altitudes on abundance, distribution and shell characters of P. labiata were investigated in several ecosystems. The highest values for SL (standard length) and W (weight) were recorded as 11.80 ± 0.10 mm and 0.17 ± 0.14 g at an altitude of 1233 m, respectively. The highest occurrence of P. labiata was observed at altitudes of 728 m (17%) and 1223 m (16%). PCA analysis showed a strong correlation between SpH (spire height) and AW (aperture width). Overall, the broad range of samples gathered from different altitudes strengthened the idea that the shell characteristics vary with altitude.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Spring-Based Soil–Structure Interaction Modeling of Pile–Abutment Joints in Short-Span Integral Abutment Bridges with LR and RSM
Polat, Erkan; Göçmen Polat, Elifcan
Integral abutment bridges (IABs) are increasingly adopted in transportation infrastructure due to their durability, reduced maintenance needs, and cost-effectiveness compared to conventional bridges. However, their reliable performance under live loads is strongly influenced by the nonlinear soil–structure interaction (SSI) at the pile–abutment joint, which remains challenging to quantify using conventional analysis methods. This study develops simplified spring-based models to capture the SSI behavior of pile–abutment joints in short-span IABs. Predictive equations for joint rotation, deflection, moment, and shear are formulated using Linear Regression (LR) and Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Unlike prior studies relying solely on FEM or traditional p–y curves, the novelty of this work lies in deriving regression-based spring constants calibrated against FEM analyses, which can be directly implemented in standard structural software. This approach significantly reduces computational demands while maintaining predictive accuracy, enabling efficient assessment of pile contributions and global bridge response. Validation against finite element method (FEM) results confirms the reliability of the simplified models, with RSM outperforming LR in representing nonlinear parameter interactions.

Adali, Zafer; Yeter, Fatih; Çoban, Mustafa Necati; Sarı, Sacit
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of influential and easily understood sustainability principles. SDG2 defines Zero Hunger, which is once again a key goal in the SDGs. A sustainable food system depends on the grazing land footprint, one of the elements of the ecological footprint. For food security to be maintained, the grazing land footprint has to be taken into consideration. In order to provide adequate global food systems and mitigate climate change, research on the stochastic features of grazing land footprint is crucial. The goal of this research is to look at the stochastic characteristics of the grazing land footprint in 13 nations that produce almost two-thirds of the world’s milk and meat. The study includes data for 13 nations over the years 1961–2022. Several unit root tests are conducted to provide more precise data about the effectiveness of the policy shocks, including whether or not they allow for repeated, smooth structural breakdowns. The results show that because the series is prone to following its long-term trends, shocks cannot lead it to diverge from those trends. Thus, any shocks brought on by policies cannot have a lasting effect on the series. However, the series includes a unit root. The unit root tests have made it clear that any policy shocks would have a long-lasting effect on the series and that policymakers may set a goal for the series. Policy suggestions have been provided for the investigated nations in conjunction with these results.

Background: This study aims to investigate the effects of postharvest melatonin (ML) and salicylic acid (SA) applications on fruit quality and biochemical properties in tomatoes. The potential synergistic effects were investigated by applying these compounds to the ‘Depar’ tomato variety grown in Bolu in the 2024 production season. The tomato fruit that were mature and free from physical damage were selected and sterilized according to predetermined criteria. Afterwards, ML and SA solutions (1 mM) were sprayed on each fruit and then the fruit were stored at 5 ± 0.5 °C and 90 ± 5% relative humidity. Pomological and biochemical measurements and analyses were carried out on fruit stored for 24 days in three different periods (8th, 16th and 24th days). Results: With the extension of storage period, the increase in spoilage and ripening symptoms such as weight loss (8.53%), pH increase (5.01) and soluble solids content (SSC) accumulation (4.95%) was observed in tomatoes. In addition, the significant decreases occurred in malic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid, oxalic acid, vitamin C and phenolic compounds. However, SA and ML applications slowed down these negative changes, with the best results generally obtained in the SA + ML combination. This combination significantly limited the decreases in weight loss and chemical contents, delayed the ripening of tomatoes and maintained their nutritional value. Especially in early and middle storage periods (8th and 16th days of the cold storage), SA + ML applications gave the most effective results. However, some protective effects were reduced by the 24th day the cold storage. Conclusion: SA and ML applications are recommended as an effective biopreservation strategy to extend the shelf life of tomatoes, prevent commercial value loss and maintain quality. This study demonstrates the potential of using bioactive compounds to preserve the quality and nutritional values of tomatoes after harvest.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1A novel s-box generation method based on metastable inducing over FPGA for block ciphers
Garipcan, Ali Murat; Aydın, Yılmaz; Özkaynak, Fatih
Substitution boxes (s-boxes) providing the nonlinearity property are fundamental components of modern encryption systems. The security of these systems directly depends on the quality of the s-boxes ensuring a high level of resistance to advanced attacks. Although there is no perfect method in the literature, improving the cryptographic properties of s-boxes, such as nonlinearity and differential independence remains an important area of interest for many researchers. In this paper, we propose a new s-box generation method based on the reinforcement of the randomness obtained from the metastable states of the R-S latch. In the proposed method, a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) chip is used to obtain design inputs based on physical reality obtained from the hardware level. Design inputs with poor statistical adequacy are transformed into s-boxes by passing them through four different hash functions (Blake2b, Blake2 s, SHA3 and Shake). A total of 333,328 s-boxes are generated with the proposed method for four different scenarios and widely used evaluation metrics such as bijectivity, nonlinearity (NL), strict avalanche criteria (SAC), bit independence criteria (BIC), differential probability (DP) and linear probability (LP) are considered for the analysis. Taking into account these metric values, the study also presents a detailed performance comparison of the proposed s-boxes with recent studies from the last 5 years in the literature. The fact that the nonlinearity degree of 75 % of the produced s-boxes is higher than 103, which is the average limit value in the literature, also confirms the method's efficiency, proven reliable by the analysis results. When all these results are evaluated together, they confirm that the proposed method is highly effective in generating robust s-boxes and that these s-boxes can be reliably used in modern cryptographic systems.

Sahilli, Yeliz Çakir; Korkmaz, Volkan
Abstract: Glyphosate (GLY) is one of the most widely used herbicides in modern intensive agriculture to enhance crop production. However, the chemical additives in commercial formulations and the active ingredient itself can adversely affect biological and chemical processes in aquatic organisms. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of sub-lethal concentrations of GLY (0, 0.23, 0.58, and 1.17 μg/L) on oxidative stress biomarkers—namely lipid peroxidation (measured as malondialdehyde, MDA), and antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, SOD; catalase, CAT; and reduced glutathione, GSH)—in Daphnia magna after 24 and 96 h of exposure. The results showed that SOD activity increased in all treatment groups compared to the control at both time points while CAT activity decreased in all groups. GSH and TBARS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) levels were significantly elevated after 24 and 96 h in all exposed groups. Overall, D. magna was sensitive to sub-lethal concentrations of GLY, and changes in SOD and CAT activities, as well as GSH and TBARS levels, these biomarkers can serve as useful indicators for detecting glyphosate-induced oxidative stress and water pollution.

Promising clinical results were obtained in the treatment of coronavirus disease by using favipiravir, umifenovir, remdesivir, ribavirin, lopinavir–ritonavir, oseltamivir, etc., antiviral drug active agents. In this study, quantitative analysis of oseltamivir neuraminidase inhibitor was carried out using electrochemical techniques. DNA-based electrochemical biosensors are generally used for analysis of anticancer and antitumor medicines. The present study introduces a novel DNA-based electrochemical sensor for neuraminidase inhibitor drug oseltamivir. The developed sensor enables the analysis of oseltamivir in a more environmentally friendly, more economical and faster way. It can be used in quality control laboratories in tablet production and will provide traceability of the drug in drug development studies and analysis in urine samples. For this purpose, a modified glassy carbon electrode was used as a working electrode. The glassy carbon electrodes alone cannot detect the oseltamivir. Guanine base, which was determined to interact with oseltamivir and found in the deoxyribonucleic acid structure, was used as an electrochemical biosensor agent. The guanine base was immobilized on glassy carbon electrode using glutardialdehyde as a crosslinker material and GA2–Guanine/GCE electrode was achieved. Two working ranges were determined for the Britton-Robinson buffer solution, tablet sample, and urine sample containing oseltamivir. The lowest detection limits (LODs) were calculated as 7.16 × 10−9 mol L−1, 9.05 × 10−9 mol L−1 and 6.19 × 10−6 mol L−1 for Britton-Robinson buffer solution, tablet sample solution, and urine sample solution, respectively. The recovery ratio for the proposed sensor ranged between 86.6 and 103.5%.

In some cases, the models targeted in machining processes are difficult to apply to industrial production. Artificial intelligence techniques applied to industrial production methods in recent times eliminate these problems in machining. The use of deep learning methods in solving these problems has recently increased. In this study, a new deep neural network (DNN) based on artificial neural networks is proposed to model the machining of AISI4140 steel by wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM). The proposed DNN model predicts surface roughness (SR) and wire wear ratio (WWR), which are the most important inferences in cutting with WEDM. Obtaining inferences such as SR and WWR in a real experimental environment means a lot of time and cost. With the proposed model, there is a significant reduction in time and cost factors. The dataset used to train and test the proposed model was obtained from the real experimental environment. For training and testing the model, the data set is divided into two parts: 20% test data and 80% training data. In the experimental tests carried out with the proposed model, error rates such as Mean Absolute Error (MAE), R2, and Mean Squared Error (MSE) accuracy rate between SR and WWR values estimated according to the SR and WWR values obtained from the real environment were examined. MAE, MSE, and R2 for SR reached 0.0495, 0.0005, and 98.48%, respectively, while MAE, MSE, and R2 for WWR reached 0.0156, 0.0036, and 98.39%, respectively. These results of the proposed model provided a lower error rate and higher accuracy than the state-of-the-art models in the literature.

Colorectal cancer is a frequently analyzed cancer type seen today. It is the third leading of cancer in terms of incidence. It is among the second leading cases resulting in death. However, when detecting pre-cancerous polyps using traditional methods, the rate of being overlooked is high. Therefore, the rate of missed polyps can be greatly reduced with deep learning-based computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) methods. In this study, a novel convolutional neural network based on CADx, called HASK-Net, is proposed for automatic polyp detection. While HASK-Net uses ResNet50 as a feature extractor in the encoder network, the novely designed hybrid attention selective kernel convolution uses it in the decoder network to increase the representation power in feature maps and learn more complex features. In experimental results on the publicly available Hiper-Kvasir and EndoTech 2020 benchmark datasets, HASK-Net showed extremely promising performance with a dice similarity score of 97.02% and 84.83% and an mIoU score of 95.38% and 84.32%, respectively.
- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ2Experimental comparison of conventional and ultrasonic-assisted high-speed drilling of glass fiber reinforced epoxy composites
Ağar, Salih; Mahmat, Aybars; Doğan, Akar
Glass fiber reinforced epoxy composites are favored in several industries, including automotive and aerospace, owing to their superior strength-to-weight ratio. Drilling is a prevalent machining procedure employed to add fasteners for laminate assembly. Nonetheless, drilling these composites presents significant challenges due to the abrasive characteristics of the reinforcement, necessitating an examination of machining performance. During the drilling of composites, cutting temperature, thrust force, and delamination damage are primary concerns. In recent years, high-speed ultrasonic drilling, an innovative machining technique designed to address these challenges, has garnered significant interest. This investigation involved high-speed ultrasonic drilling and conventional drilling of glass fiber reinforced epoxy material. In the studies, optimal conditions were studied by evaluating thrust force, cutting temperature, and delamination damage by varying speeds, feed rates, and frequencies. The thrust force was 11 N in the traditional approach at 40,000 rpm, but it was recorded at 9 N with the ultrasonic method. Moreover, with ultrasonic drilling, cutting temperatures decreased by over 25% relative to traditional drilling, attributable to the harmonic motion that dissipates heat in the drilling zone. Analysis of the drilling region revealed a notable enhancement in damage, particularly in delamination, with the application of ultrasonic drilling. The experimental results indicate that ultrasonic machining enhances machining performance.

In the contemporary energy landscape, the increasing demand for electricity and the inherent uncertainties associated with the integration of renewable resources have rendered the accurate and reliable forecasting of short- and long-term demand imperative. Energy demand forecasting, fundamentally a time series problem, can be inherently complex, nonlinear, and multi-scale. Therefore, interest in artificial intelligence–based methods that provide high performance for short- and long-term forecasting, rather than traditional methods, has increased in order to solve these problems. In this study, a hybrid artificial intelligence model based on LSTM, GRU, and Random Forest, utilizing a distinct mechanism to address these types of problems, is proposed. The Multi-Scale Sliding Window (MSSW) approach was utilized for the model’s input data to capture the dynamics of the time series at different scales. The optimization of windows was conducted using the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) method to determine the optimal window sizes within the MSSW structure in a data-driven manner. Experimental studies on Panama’s real energy demand data from 2015 to 2020 show that the CWT-aided MSSW-hybrid model forecasts better with lower error rates (0.007 MAE, 0.009 RMSE, 1.051% MAPE) than single models and manually determined window sizes. The results of the study demonstrate the importance of hybrid structures and window optimization in energy demand forecasting.

This study explores the influences of verification and guided inquiry-based physics laboratories on preservice science teachers’ conceptual understanding of and misconceptions about simple electric circuits and their metacognitive awareness. In other words, the impact of the amount of guidance in inquiry teaching is being explored. There were two groups: (1) the experimental group, where the guided inquiry was implemented, and (2) the control group, where the verification style inquiry was implemented. The experiment was a true-experimental design because 55 pre-service science teachers were randomly assigned to the groups. This study used two pretest and posttest instruments: (1) Simple Electric Circuit Diagnostic Test (SECDT) with 11 items and (2) Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) with 52 items. The SECDT is a three-tier test to assess conceptual understanding and misconceptions of students about simple electric circuits, while the MAI assesses the metacognitive awareness of adults. The authors utilized a doubly multivariate repeated measures design, a multivariate test statistic for repeated measures, for analyzing the data. As a result, this study presents evidence of the positive effect of a guided inquiry-based physics laboratory concerning the verification-based one on preservice science teachers’ conceptual understanding of simple electric circuits and their metacognitive awareness and presents conclusions based on the discussion.
