- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ2Innovative nonlinear component generator inspired by squirrel search algorithm
Artuğer, Fırat
The most used approach for data encryption is block cipher. One of the most important structures for block cipher algorithms is undoubtedly s-boxes. The s-box structure used in the AES algorithm contains 256 values. Therefore, obtaining powerful s-boxes is a rather difficult search problem. Because the search space is very large (256!). In this study, a new method based on squirrel search algorithm (SSA) is proposed to overcome this problem. The proposed method is displacement-based. In an s-box taken at the entrance, stronger s-box structures are sought by changing the location of the elements. The most important innovation in this study is that the elements to be displaced in the s-box were selected with the positioning states of the SSA. The chaotic Gompertz map was used for the initial population. Four different s-boxes were produced with the method developed thanks to the effective positioning states of SSA. As the fitness function, the nonlinearity value, which is the most important evaluation criterion of an s-box structure, was used. The proposed four s-box structures increased up to 110 nonlinearity values after only 4500 iterations. Here, it has been shown that the algorithm can be effective in all s-boxes by generating four different s-boxes. Considering these results, it has been determined that the proposed method gives more effective results than most methods in the literature.

Unal, İlkay
Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is widely used in biomedical applications due to its biocompatibility, osteoconductivity, and bioactivity. However, its low mechanical strength, tendency toward rapid corrosion, and lack of bactericidal properties present significant limitations in applications. This study aimed to improve the properties of HAp by reinforcing it with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and doping it with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and silver-core selenium-shell nanoparticles (Ag@SeNPs). Ocimum basilicum extract was used as both a reducing and stabilizing agent in the synthesis of nanoparticles using an environmentally friendly and non-toxic method as an alternative to traditional methods. The synthesized HAp, HAp/MWCNT, Ag-HAp/MWCNT, and Ag@Se-HAp/MWCNT nanocomposites were characterized by TEM, SEM, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and BET analysis. BET analysis showed a reduction in surface area from 109.4 m2/g for pure HAp to 71.4 m2/g, 47.5 m2/g, and 35.3 m2/g for HAp/MWCNTs, Ag- HAp/MWCNTs, and Ag@Se-HAp/MWCNTs, respectively. Antimicrobial activities against P. aeruginosa, E. coli, S. aureus, E. faecalis, and C. albicans were evaluated. HAp and HAp/MWCNT did not show any antimicrobial activity, while Ag-HAp/MWCNTs showed inhibition zones of 14 mm for Escherichia coli and 18 mm for Pseudomonas aeruginosa at 5 mg/mL. Ag@Se-MWCNTs/HAp exhibited superior efficacy with inhibition zones of 18 mm, 12 mm, and 20 mm for S. aureus, E. faecalis, and Candida albicans, respectively. The incorporation of Ag@SeNPs enhanced HAp’s antibacterial and antifungal properties through a synergistic mechanism.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ4EVALUATION OF IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES IN THE CONTEXT OF ZERO-WASTE CITY AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY CONCEPT
Derse, Onur; Polat, Elifcan Göçmen
In recent years, there is a growing interest for waste systems in many countries around the world due to inevitable consequences of major environmental concerns. Urbanization, consumption styles, rapid developments of technologies have increased the consumption inevitably brings about the waste generation, which significantly poses risks to the environment. Although most papers have focused on waste management problems, there is a great gap of evaluation of implementation strategies for the zero-waste city and circular economy concepts. The goal “zero-waste” is strategically achieved with enriched engineering methods including all stakeholders to overcome the challenging waste issues. In this context, this study presents a systematic approach of implementing the policies and strategies focused on the most essential dimensions analysis associated with zero-waste and circular economy based on the PESTEL (political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and legal). In the study, Best-Worst Method (BWM) is first provided to evaluate a range of zero-waste implementation strategies which are essential for planners and policymakers. In addition, computational results are compared with the Stepwise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (SWARA), and the Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (F-AHP) methods to validate the results, and the results of the methods were found to be consistent. Environmental, economic and technological dimensions were obtained as the most influential strategies. According to the results of BWM and Fuzzy AHP methods, the four most important sub-strategies are S16 (Implementing a closed loop chain), S13 (Promoting sustainability), S5 (Investing in waste management infrastructure) and S12 (Green energy technologies). It is seen that these strategies are mostly environmental. According to the SWARA method, the most important sub-strategies under the economic dimension are S5, S4 (Providing economic incentives), and S6 (Development of green finance initiatives). The findings should also encourage the practitioners and researchers, as the detailed evaluation of strategies in terms of the zero-waste and circular economy provides a database to transform current cities into zero waste cities.

Abstract: Non-indigenous species in an ecosystem increase the potential of novel ecological relationships and can dramatically affect community composition and ecosystem roles. This study examined the spatial distribution of Dreissena caputlacus and Dreissena polymorpha gallandi within the Kelkit Basin located in Northeastern Anatolia. A total of 75 sampling locations representing various habitats were surveyed in the Kelkit Basin. The presence of D. p. gallandi and D. caputlacus was identified for the first time in the basin. The effects of altitude on the population structure, geographic distribution, and shell traits of D. p. gallandi and D. caputlacus were also assessed in a range of ecosystems. The highest shell length (SL) for D. caputlacus was recorded at 566 m altitude with values of 25.58 ± 5.80 mm while the highest SL value for D. p. gallandi was 24.15 ± 5.13 mm at 610 m altitude. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed a strong association among shell length (SL), shell height (SH), shell width (SW), and weight (W). In conclusion, the diverse altitudinal distribution of samples strengthened the evidence that shell features differ with changes in altitude.

Background: Both maximal muscle strength and muscle power are independently important for karatekas. However, the relationship between strength and power in elite male kumite karatekas is under researched. This study aimed to determine the relationship between back-leg-chest (BLC) isometric muscle strength with sprint and jump variables in elite male karatekas. Methods: Male elite/international level (tier 4) kumite karatekas (n = 14; age, 20.79 ± 1.67 year; height, 1.77 ± 0.06 m; weight, 72.21 ± 5.20 kg) were recruited. BLC strength, sprint and jump values were measured with a dynamometer, a photocell, and an application, respectively. Pearson correlation (trivial r < 0.1; small r < 0.3; moderate r < 0.5; large r < 0.7; very large r < 0.9; nearly perfect/perfect r ≥ 0.9) and linear regression analyses were performed to determine the relationship and shared variance between BLC strength, sprint, and jump performance. Results: There were large to very large correlations between BLC strength and sprint time (r = − 0.930, p < 0.01), velocity (r = 0.918; p < 0.01), acceleration (r = 0.913; p < 0.01) and running momentum (r = 0.721; p < 0.01). Additionally, BLC strength correlated with jump height (moderate, r = 0.550, p < 0.05), peak anaerobic power (moderate, r = 0.672, p < 0.01) and power to body mass ratio (moderate, r = 0.545, p < 0.05). BLC strength and sprint variables showed an r2 = 0.52–0.86 (p < 0.01), while BLC strength and jump variables showed an r2 = 0.29–0.45 (p < 0.05). Conclusions: BLC strength is related to jump and sprint performance in male elite karate athletes. This relationship underscores the importance of including strength training that targets BLC muscle strength in training programs for coaches and athletes.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2Advanced synthesis and comprehensive characterization of nanoparticle-reinforced epoxy-based biocomposites derived from modified palm oil
Şahal, Hakan; Aydoğmuş, Ercan; Canpolat, Erdal; Kaya, Mehmet
In this research, new biocomposites were synthesized by two-step modification of palm oil (MPO). The raw material (MPOSA) was epoxidized in the first step and obtained by reacting with 4,4-diaminodiphenyl sulfone in the second step. Silicon carbide (SiC), MPOSA, bisphenol A diglycidyl ether, and epoxy resin were used to obtain the biocomposites. After this process, necessary physical tests and chemical analyses were performed. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses were used to characterize the biocomposites. The research included measurements of bulk density, Shore D hardness, thermal conductivity, and thermal stability of the biocomposite. The results indicated that MPOSA reinforcement decreased the bulk density of the biocomposite in proportion to the doping level, and Shore D hardness tests revealed a decrease in hardness with the addition of MPOSA. The increase in MPOSA reinforcement also led to a reduction in the thermal conductivity coefficient. In experimental studies, the optimum reinforcement ratio was determined as 1 wt.% nano-SiC, 10 wt.% glass fiber, and 10 wt.% MPOSA. Excessive MPOSA reinforcement adversely affected the matrix structure and pore distribution of the nanocomposite due to aggregation due to increased intermolecular interaction. Thermal decomposition results showed that MPOSA reinforcement reduced the activation energy of the nanocomposite. This study successfully developed an economical, environmentally friendly, and easily processed biocomposite and contributed to the development of functional and sustainable alternatives.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2Investigation of the effect of the metallographic properties of vertical and horizontal cylinders made of ferrochrome with different contents on heat transfer by natural convection
Kahraman, Gökhan; Taşgın, Yahya
In this study, ferrochrome materials containing elements with different content ratios were manufactured into six-cylinder specimens, 13 mm in diameter and 16 mm in length, and heated in a furnace up to 500 °C. The heated cylinders were removed and left to cool in vertical and horizontal positions in a 16 °C environment. The temperatures were recorded using thermal cameras at certain intervals while the materials cooled down. The six specimens, whose metallographic differences were identified using SEM and XRD analysis devices, were placed vertically and horizontally, and their heat transfer by natural conviction was noted. In the calculations, each specimen’s Nusselt and Rayleigh numbers were identified based on time and then compared. The fastest cooling among the specimens occurred in the ferrochromium material with 55.93% Cr, 31.11% Fe, 11.56% C, 0.48% Si, 0.83% O, and 0.09% Al compound ratios, both in vertical and horizontal positions. Additionally, since the Nusselt number of the horizontal cylinders remained below one based on their position, their natural convection flows were not initiated. The cooling in the horizontal cylinders occurred via conduction.

Parlak Ak, Tuba; Yaman, Mine; Bayrakdar, Ali; Bulmus, Ozgur
Remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM) throughout the estrous cycle is one of the most striking features of the uterus. A disintegrin and metalloprotease with thrombospondin type I motifs (ADAMTS-1) is a metalloproteinase responsible for the degradation of some proteoglycans, which are ECM components. In this study, ADAMTS-1 distribution was analyzed in the uterus of ovariectomized rats administered 17β-estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) and in the uterus at different estrous stages. Ovariectomized (OVX) rats were subjected to single and combined E2 (0.2 mg/kg) and P4 (10 mg/kg) hormone replacement therapies. E2 was administered for 3 consecutive days, followed by E2, P4, or E2 + P4 for 4 consecutive days. The serum level of E2 decreased from the proestrus phase to the diestrus phase, but that of P4 was the highest in the estrus phase. During the estrus phase, the serum level of luteinizing hormone (LH) was the lowest and that of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) was the highest. P4 level increased significantly in the OVX + P4 and OVX + E2 + P4 groups compared with the OVX group. The serum levels of LH and FSH decreased in the OVX + E2 and OVX + P4 groups compared with the OVX group, and were the lowest in the OVX + E2 + P4 group. ADAMTS-1 immunoreactivity in luminal, glandular, and stromal cells of the uterus decreased from proestrus to diestrus. When immunoreactivity in hormone replacement groups was compared, weak immunoreactivity was observed in the OVX group. ADAMTS-1 immunoreactivity gradually increased in OVX + P4 and OVX + E2 groups, and was particularly notable in luminal, glandular, and stromal cells in the OVX + E2 + P4 group. ADAMTS-1 distribution was affected by the estrous cycle process and hormone replacement therapy in the OVX procedure.

Aksel-Uylar, Aydan Asli; Topcuoglu, Ceyhun; Saglam, Melda; Vardar-Yagli, Naciye
Background: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a multisystem disease primarily affecting the lungs. It impacts physical fitness due to increased bronchial secretions and exercise intolerance. Inspiratory muscle training (IMT) is recommended as a pulmonary rehabilitation approach. Therefore, we aimed to examine the effect of inspiratory muscle training on health-related physical fitness in CF. Methods: Articles were searched in five databases from inception to June 2025. All randomized controlled trials comparing IMT with a control group in individuals with cystic fibrosis were included. Four randomized controlled trials involving a total of 90 individuals with CF met the inclusion criteria. Results: A significant difference was found in the change in maximal work capacity, maximal minute ventilation, and exercise duration during the exercise test in the IMT group compared to the control group. However, no significant difference was observed in the change in maximal oxygen uptake, 6-minute walk test distance, and oxygen saturation during the 6-minute walk test between the IMT group and the control group. Conclusion: The therapeutic effectiveness of IMT for physical fitness is still uncertain. The evidence is not enough to assess how IMT can be used to enhance health-related physical fitness in CF. Further research should explore the optimal intensity and duration of IMT training needed to improve cardiorespiratory fitness. Additionally, future studies should evaluate how effective IMT is when examining its impact on health-related physical fitness.
- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ1Bridging experiment and simulation: Image processing-driven FEA of carbon fiber powder reinforced LDPE
ARIKAN, Volkan; DOGAN, Akar
Short fiber-reinforced polymers are widely used in engineering applications due to their improved mechanical performance and processability. However, accurately predicting the elastic behavior of such composites remains a challenge, especially when fibers are randomly distributed and lack defined orientation. To address this, this study investigates the mechanical properties of composite materials developed by incorporating carbon fiber powder (CFP) into a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) matrix at different reinforcement ratios (3 %, 6 %, and 9 %). The effects of CFP content on elastic modulus, tensile strength, and ductility were examined experimentally and through finite element analysis (FEA). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to analyze the microstructure, and image processing techniques were applied to quantify fiber orientation, which was then integrated into the FEA framework (Oriented FEA). Results indicate that CFP addition increases stiffness and tensile strength while reducing ductility, with 3 % CFP specimens showing the most favorable balance of mechanical properties. The proposed image-based orientation modeling approach provides improved simulation fidelity and offers a scalable methodology for evaluating the mechanical behavior of short fiber-reinforced composites.

Aydin, Handan; Odak, Mehmet
In this study, the structural and optical properties of CdO thin films subjected to heat treatment at different temperatures were investigated. CdO films were deposited on glass substrates by thermal evaporation. X-ray diffraction technique (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements were taken to investigate the crystal structure and surface morphology of the prepared films UV-vis spectrometer was utilized to measure the optical properties. As a result of XRD measurements, it was observed that the CdO thin film without and with heat treatment has a cubic crystal structure. The increase in the sharpness of x-ray peaks in CdO thin films with heat treatment means an increase in crystallization, and the calculated crystal sizes showed that the crystal size generally tends to increase with a rise in the applied annealing temperature. As can be seen from the SEM images, it was observed that the small grains on the surface were replaced by large grains as a result of the merger of small grains with each other with rising annealing temperature. The optical band gap Eg, which changes with heat treatment, was calculated to be between 2.45 and 2.27 eV. It was concluded that heat treatment improves the conductivity of CdO thin films by reducing the Eg value.

Basgoz, Oykum; Guler, Seval Hale; Guler, Omer; ALMisned, Ghada; Baykal, Duygu Sen; Kilic, G.; Tekin, H.O.
In this study, Al6061–Eu2O3 composites were fabricated via mechanical alloying and systematically characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy to evaluate structural and compositional features. The incorporation of Eu2O3 in varying weight percentages (1–20 wt%) was confirmed by XRD, revealing phase retention and crystallite refinement, while SEM–EDS analyses indicated uniform elemental distribution at low doping and localized clustering at higher reinforcement levels. Radiation shielding properties were comprehensively assessed through mass and linear attenuation coefficients, half value layer, effective atomic number, fast neutron removal cross section, buildup factors, and photon transmission factors. The results demonstrated a strong correlation between increasing Eu2O3 content and improved shielding performance. The E20 composite exhibited a mass attenuation coefficient of 22.33 cm2/g at 0.015 MeV, over threefold higher than the base alloy, and fast neutron removal cross section improved by 22.5 % compared to Al6061 alone. Additionally, EBF and EABF values decreased significantly, confirming reduced secondary photon build-up. These findings validate the effectiveness of Eu2O3 as a reinforcement phase for tailoring Al6061 for multifunctional applications, particularly in nuclear, aerospace, and radiological environments requiring lightweight materials with superior gamma and neutron attenuation.

Fishery management is crucial to sustain marine ecosystems by preventing overfishing and ensuring a fair distribution of fishing quotas. Accurately identifying the geographical origins of fish stocks is a key challenge in region-specific management strategies. Otoliths, calcified structures found in the heads of all fish species (except sharks and rays), provide insights into the life history and geographical origins of these fish. Traditional otolith analysis is time-consuming and error-prone because of manual inspection. Our study presents a novel approach using deep learning and computer vision to automate the geographical recognition of fish using otolith images. We propose a model that integrates MobileNet, which is known for its efficiency, with an advanced Mlp-Mixer that incorporates an attention mechanism to extract enhanced features. When tested on a diverse dataset of otolith images from five regions, the proposed model achieved a remarkable 96% accuracy, significantly outperforming traditional methods. This high accuracy demonstrates the potential to revolutionise fishery management by providing a fast, reliable, and automated solution for geographical region identification. In conclusion, the proposed method demonstrates the transformative potential of combining MobileNet and an attention-based Mlp-Mixer for automated fish geographic recognition using otolith images. This innovative method addresses the limitations of traditional manual inspection and paves the way for more effective and sustainable fishery management practices.
