∗ -Ricci Tensor on α -Cosymplectic Manifolds

Amruthalakshmi, M.R.; Prakasha, D.G.; Bin Turki, Nasser; Unal, Inan

In this paper, we study α-cosymplectic manifold M admitting ∗-Ricci tensor. First, it is shown that a ∗-Ricci semisymmetric manifold M is ∗-Ricci flat and a φ-conformally flat manifold M is an η-Einstein manifold. Furthermore, the ∗-Weyl curvature tensor W∗ on M has been considered. Particularly, we show that a manifold M with vanishing ∗-Weyl curvature tensor is a weak φ-Einstein and a manifold M fulfilling the condition RE1,E2⋅W∗=0 is η-Einstein manifold. Finally, we give a characterization for α-cosymplectic manifold M admitting ∗-Ricci soliton given as to be nearly quasi-Einstein. Also, some consequences for three-dimensional cosymplectic manifolds admitting ∗-Ricci soliton and almost ∗-Ricci soliton are drawn.

A mathematical programming model for facility location optimization of hydrogen production from renewable energy sources

Derse, Onur; Göçmen, Elifcan; Yılmaz, Ebru; Erol, Rızvan

Fossil fuels are the primary energy sources and meet the global energy demands. However, environmental and health problems related with these sources boosted the demand for renewable energy sources. Hydrogen, as an energy carrier has a growing potential for solving these problems. In this article, a mathematical programming model that integrates the production, storage and transportation, safety, location, and staff assignment decisions is presented considering minimization of costs. Although most of the studies focus on location, distribution, storage decisions of hydrogen energy networks, the article also includes production, safety and staff assignment decisions to make this problem more practical. Furthermore, we also investigate the set covering constraint will ensure that each region is covered by minimum number of the hydrogen facilities. The developed model ensures a balance between location, distribution, storage, production, safety and staff decisions by installing two production facilities by assigning total 9 warehouses, 22 tank trucks, 12100 km pipeline, 35 staffs under distance constraint 2000 km in regions 1 and 5. The computational results indicate that the proposed model produces effective solutions for the coverage to all region and minimum total cost for real-case situations.

Experimental study on synergistic enhancement of thermal performance of a closed two-phase thermosyphon by a TiO2nanofluid doped with Al2O3

Xu, Qian; Yang, Gang; Jia, Shuhui; Wang, Zhaoxiao; Akkurt, Nevzat; Zhang, Hui; Zhou, Qiang; Shen, Meng; Yang, Di; Zhu, Lidong

The heat transfer performance of two-phase closed thermosyphon solar collectors (TPCTs) can be improved by adding nanoparticles to the conventional working fluid, but it is necessary to ensure good rheological properties while improving the heat transfer performance. Therefore, spherical (TiO2) nanoparticles with good rheological properties and rod-shaped (Al2O3) nanoparticles with high thermal conductivity were mixed and applied to the TPCT. First, the effects of individual factors such as the concentration of nanoparticles and the operating parameters on the thermal performance of the TPCT were investigated and a regression analysis was performed. Then, the joint effect of inclination angle and filling ratio on the thermal performance of TPCT was further investigated by orthogonal experiment. The results show that doping TiO2 with Al2O3 can further improve the thermal performance of TPCT. For the volume concentration of 0.6% of nanoparticles, filling ratio of 50% and inclination angle of 80°, the best heat transfer performance of TPCT was achieved. Compared with the deionized water (DW), the thermal resistance of the single (TiO2-H2O) and hybrid (Al2O3+TiO2-H2O) nanofluid TPCT is reduced by 10.7% and 13.4%, the thermal efficiency is increased by 11.0% and 13.7%, and the equivalent heat transfer coefficient is increased by 16.2% and 18.7%, respectively.

Aroclor 1254 impairs sperm quality, fertilization ability, and embryo development of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Kocabaş, Mehmet; Kocabaş, Filiz Kutluyer; Aksu, Önder; Benzer, Fulya; Erişir, Mine; Sahilli, Yeliz Çakir

The polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in aquatic environment adversely affect non-target organisms, including fish. Especially, the male reproduction and next generation can be damaged through high exposure to these pollutants. Hence, the sperm cells were exposed to sublethal concentrations of Aroclor 1254 (0, 1, 5, 10, or 25 mg/l) for 4 h. The sperm quality parameters were analyzed by SCA (Sperm Class Analyzer). The fertility, eyeing, and hatching rates were determined as gamete markers. Lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde-MDA), glutathione (GSH), and antioxidant enzymes [superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and catalase (CAT)] were measured for determination of oxidative stress. Our results showed that Aroclor 1254 negatively affected the motility rate and duration, fertilization rate, embryogenesis, and hatching and also triggered antioxidant defense mechanisms at the highest concentration (25 mg L−1). Furthermore, linear speed (VSL), linearity index (LIN), and amplitude lateral head (ALH) were significantly changed after exposure to 25 mg L−1, and the lowest concentrations (1 and 10 mg L−1) did not significantly affect the motility and fertilizing capacity. The embryogenesis and hatching were significantly affected by sperm exposure to 1, 10, and 25 mg L−1 of Aroclor 1254. Consequently, Aroclor 1254 causes potential hazards in male germ cells, and the exposure of sperm cells to pollutants can adversely affect next generation of wild populations.

The effect of pungency perception and personality traits on consumer's preferences from various regions of Türkiye for cig kofte, a traditional Turkish food

    Boran, O.S.; Omac, B.; Gokce, Y.; Hayaloglu, A.A.

The aim of this study was to test whether personality traits influenced liking and choice of pungent foods such as cig kofte for Turkish population. In addition, we explored the role of demographic variables (gender and regions of Türkiye) and various concentration of capsaicin in cig kofte on the relation between personality traits and the frequency of annual cig kofte intake and liking of a spicy meal. Data of 316 participants from different region of Türkiye (47% women and 53% men) were examined. Participants were categorized for demographics, region, and personality traits (sensitivity seeking (AISS), sensitivity to reward (SR) and sensitivity to punishment (SP). They tasted cig kofte including various concentrations of capsaicin (trans-8-methyl-N-vanillyl-6-nonenamide; 50, 75, 100, and 150 μM) and then evaluated liking and perceived intensity in it. A significant positive correlation was found between the liking of a spicy meal and frequency of annual cig kofte intake. Although a significant negative correlation was observed between the liking of a spicy meal and each concentration of capsaicin in cig kofte, no correlation was seen between the frequency of annual cig kofte intake and each concentration of capsaicin. In addition, the liking of a spicy meal was only associated with a personality trait, AISS, but the frequency of annual cig kofte intake was related to personality traits, AISS and SR. Besides, the relations between the frequency of annual cig kofte intake, liking of a spicy meal, personality traits (AISS, SR, and SP) and various concentration of capsaicin were influenced by both gender and region. Finally, no clear relationship was observed between liking and perceived intensity in cig kofte.

Onat, Onur; Yön, Burak; Öncü, Mehmet Emin; Varolgüneş, Sadık; Karaşin, Abdulhalim; Cemalgil, Selim

An earthquake with a magnitude ranging from Mw = 6.9 (KOERI) to Mw = 7.0 (USGS) struck Samos Island in the Aegean Sea on October 30, 2020, with an epicentre 70 kms from the İzmir city centre in Turkey. The earthquake took place at 14:51 local time (11:51 UTC). The peak ground acceleration (PGA) of this earthquake was recorded to be 0.179 g at the epicentre of the earthquake. This earthquake occurred at a depth of 17.26 km (AFAD (2020) İzmir Earthquake Report, (In Turkish)) and lasted 16 s. The main shock from the earthquake triggered a tsunami that hit the building stocks built near the coast. During the gradual deregulation of COVID-19 pandemic regulations, various events caused considerable damage to the building stock, particularly in the Izmir Seferihisar and Bayraklı regions and resulted in a massive disruption of daily habits. The main shock caused 117 deaths in both Turkey and Greece, and 1632 people were also injured in Turkey. Moreover, several injuries occurred in Greece. A total of 103 buildings collapsed, 700 were severely damaged, 814 buildings were moderately damaged, and 7889 were slightly damaged. The basic aim of this paper is to briefly present the past and present seismotectonic characteristics of the region, present building stock, and former structural conditions before the earthquake, assess structural performance and classify distinguished earthquake-induced failures and damage due to the basin effect.

    Duran, Gülseven; Cevik, Mutlu

In this study, the changes in pH, titratable acidity, survival of Lactobacillus acidophilus, mold and yeast counts, rheological properties, and sensory evaluation of fermented almond milk samples with and without added 100% orange juice at three different ratios (10%, 20%, and 30%) were investigated. pH and titratable acidity values of fermented almond milk samples varied between 3.97–4.40 and 0.178%–0.478% at the end of the fermentation process, respectively. It was determined that the survival of L. acidophilus content of fermented samples varied between 7.58 and 7.95 log CFU/ml. The best suitable rheological model for the flow behavior of all fermented almond milk samples was the Power-Law model. Fermented almond milk samples with added 20% and 30% orange juice was more preferred by the panelists. It is thought that the results of this study could provide valuable information for equipment and pumping systems that can be installed on an industrial scale. Practical applications: In recent years, cereals (oats, rice, corn), legumes (soybean, cowpea, chickpea), oilseeds (sesame, sunflower, flaxseed), and hard-shelled fruits (almond, coconut, hazelnut, peanut, walnut) is widely used in the production of plant milk. In this study, the changes in some quality and rheological properties of fermented almond milk samples with added different ratios of orange juice were investigated. It was determined that all fermented almond milk samples had high probiotic content at the end of the fermentation stage. As a result of the sensory evaluation, it was determined that the acceptability of fermented almond milk with added 20% and 30% orange juice was very high compared to other samples.

Synthesis, characterization, pH-sensitive swelling and antimicrobial activities of chitosan–graft-poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) hydrogel composites for biomedical applications

Torğut, Gülben; Yazdıç, Ferit Can; Gürler, Nedim

In this paper, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was graft copolymerized onto chitosan (CHI) at different ratios using a radical initiator. The grafted hydrogel composites were then characterized by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform ınfrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). Swelling behavior of the hydrogels was investigated at different pH and different times. The antimicrobial activity of the chitosan-graft-HEMA (CHI-HEMA) against gram-negative bacteria and gram-positive bacteria was studied by the standard agar well diffusion assay method. The CHI-HEMA 1:1 and CHI-HEMA 1:2 showed an obvious antimicrobial effect against six test strains. The CHI-HEMA 1:1 and CHI-HEMA 1:2 exhibited a highly significant increase (p < 0.01) in diameter of the inhibition zones compared with the standard antibiotics. Furthermore, CHI-HEMA 1:1 presented the highest antimicrobial activity against all test strains with a significant difference (p < 0.01) compared with CHI-HEMA 1:2. Meanwhile, the decreasing order of the average sensitivity to CHI-HEMA 1:1 and CHI-HEMA 1:2 was observed to be S. marcescens > E. coli > S. aureus subsp. aureus > S. enteritidis > E. faecalis > E. aerogenes. These results indicate potential application of CHI-HEMA 1:1 and CHI-HEMA 1:2 graft hydrogels as a novel and efficient antimicrobial agent in biomedical fields.

Time-Dependent Flow of Water-Based CoFe2O4-Mn-ZnFe2O4 Nanoparticles over a Shrinking Sheet with Mass Transfer Effect in Porous Media

Waini, Iskandar; Khan, Umair; Zaib, Aurang; Ishak, Anuar; Pop, Ioan; Akkurt, Nevzat

The use of hybrid nanoparticles to increase heat transfer is a favorable area of research, and therefore, numerous scientists, researchers, and scholars have expressed their appreciation for and interest in this field. Determining the dynamic role of nanofluids in the cooling of microscopic electronic gadgets, such as microchips and related devices, is also one of the fundamental tasks. With such interesting and useful applications of hybrid nanofluids in mind, the main objective is to deal with the analysis of the unsteady flow towards a shrinking sheet in a water-based hybrid ferrite nanoparticle in porous media, with heat sink/source effects. Moreover, the impact of these parameters on heat and mass transfers is also reported. Numerical results are obtained using MATLAB software. Non-unique solutions are determined for a certain shrinking strength, in addition to the unsteadiness parameter. The mass transfer and friction factor increase for the first solution due to the hybrid nanoparticles, but the heat transfer rate shows the opposite effect.

The influence of battery distance on a hybrid air-cooled cylindrical lithium-ion battery phase change material thermal management system for storing solar energy

Akkurt, Nevzat; Aghakhani, S.; Mahmoud, Mustafa Z.; Tag El Din, ElSayed M.

The cooling of a lithium-ion battery pack made up of three cylindrical batteries in a channel is studied using the finite element technique in this research. The phase change material (PCM) is surrounded by a laminar flow of air. The solid PCM fraction values and the average temperature of each battery and battery pack at various periods were studied by varying the distance between the batteries from 7 to 10 mm and adjusting the speed from 0.1 to 0.3 cm/s. When compared to other batteries surrounding this battery, the left battery had the lowest temperature and the maximum quantity of solid PCM was generated at various periods, according to the findings of this article. At 0.1 cm/s, the distance 7 mm is the greatest and the distance 8 mm is the lowest in the left battery, the distance 10 mm is the largest in the center battery, the distance 8 mm is the lowest in the right battery, and the distance 8 mm generates the least amount of solid PCM in the battery pack. The second and third batteries, as well as the battery pack, have the lowest average temperature across various distances of the batteries due to a distance of 10 mm between them. Increasing the speed from 0.1 to 0.3 cm/s causes the temperature to decrease in a time-dependent manner.

Fault location method on two-terminal transmission line using synchronized time information of traveling waves

    Akmaz, Düzgün; Mamiş, Mehmet Salih

In this study, approximate derivative (AD) signal processing method using synchronous voltages data, based on the traveling wave theory, was developed to determine fault locations in transmission lines. The first aerial mode voltage signals were obtained by applying the Clarke transformation to the voltage signals that occur after a short circuit fault. Then, by taking the first AD of the aerial mode voltage signals, the traveling waves were obtained. Finally, the location of the fault was found by using the time difference information of the traveling waves, wave velocity value and transmission line length. The proposed signal processing method was found to be effective in determining the location of faults. It was tested and compared to the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) for various fault conditions. Based on the simulation results, the proposed method was found to have a slightly higher success rate than DWT, in general. Moreover, it can work with low sampling frequencies, and it provides a better resolution than DWT to display the traveling waves in noise conditions.

Numerical investigation the hydrodynamic parameters of the flow in a wavy corrugated channel using different turbulence models

Akbari, Omid Ali; Haghjoo, Hossein; Abed, Azher M.; Karimi, Mahsa; Maghzian, Ali; Shabani, Gholamreza Ahmadi Sheikh; Anvari, Amirmasoud; Akkurt, Nevzat; Toghraie, Davood

In this research, turbulent flow numerical models in a wavy channel were investigated. The studied channel is simulated in two dimensions and symmetrically in the range of Reynolds numbers from Re=10,000 to 80,000. The significant cause of this research is to investigate and determine the appropriate method for estimating the behavior of turbulent flow in a wavy channel. In this research, the behavior of turbulent flow in a wavy channel will be simulated in 7 different ways, which are k-ω SST, k-ϵ RN, k-ϵ Realizable, k−ϵ Standard, k-ω Standard, Reynolds stress and Spalart-Allmaras. The findings of this research show that the impacts of the presence of flow viscosity (friction) and the presence of adverse pressure gradients are factors that strongly affect the velocity profiles in the upstream areas of the corrugated section. Among the studied models, due to better compatibility and guessing of flow and hydrodynamic properties, k-ω SST methods and Reynolds and Spalart-Allmaras stress are introduced as the best methods for such geometries. On the other hand, increasing the accuracy of other turbulence methods is related to the flow physics and geometric structure of each problem. In this research, the hydrodynamic parameters of the flow such as pressure drop, skin friction factor, and dynamic pressure drop coefficient and vortex contours, and pressure are plotted and described.

Cadmium exposure in population: alcoholic beverage consumption and health risk assessment

Kaplan Ince, Olcay; Ince, Muharrem; Onal, Ali

Risk assessment of cadmium (Cd) for human health play a key role because of toxic effect. Researchers are undergoing constant development for modelling approaches to make a risk assessment. It was carried out a central composite design combining with response surface modeling to optimize and modeling of Cd2+ ions in this study. Also, this study was performed to provide information about possible risk associated with alcoholic beverage consumption. Some independent process parameters including contact time and pH were chosen for optimization. Under optimal parameters, 142.9 mg g−1 was determined as Cd2+ ions removal effectiveness. Significance independent parameters and their interactions were checked using analysis of variance. These results were verified by correlation coefficients (R2 = 0.9967) of the statistical prediction. Estimated daily intake (EDI) and target hazard quotients (THQ) were calculated, to assess health risk. The Cd2+ ions EDI values (µg/day/person) were less than the recommended dietary allowance values and also, its THQ value was less than 1, also. When the obtained results compared with the levels set by regulatory authorities, the studied alcoholic beverages consumption do not pose a toxicological risk. When did the North Anatolian fault reach southern Marmara, Turkey?

Karabacak, Volkan; Sançar, Taylan; Yildirim, Gökhan; Uysal, I. Tonguç

We dated syntectonic calcites on fault planes from the southern branch of the western North Anatolian fault (NAF) in northern Turkey using U-Th geochronology. We selected strike-slip faults that are kinematically related to the current regional strain field. The isotopic ages cluster around different periods during the past ~700 k.y. The most prominent cluster peak of 510.5 ± 9.5 ka (1σ) is consistent with the maximum cumulative strike-slip offset data and tectonic plate motions measured by GPS data, highlighting the fact that the present configuration of the NAF in the southern Marmara region started at ca. 500 ka or earlier. These new isotopic ages, combined with previous considerations of regional tectonics, reveal that faulting along the western NAF initiated primarily in the southern Marmara region at least a few hundred thousand years earlier than the timing suggested for the northern branch of the western NAF. This study presents an innovative approach to constrain the timing of initiation of currently active fault segments along the NAF in southern Marmara. U-Th geochronology of fault-hosted calcite thus has a wide application in determining absolute ages of fault episodes in wider shear zones along plate boundaries

Corrosion potential and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of geopolymer tiles produced with waste metal particles

Gülmez, Nihan; Koçkal, Niyazi Uğur; Özen, Şükrü; Ateş, Kayhan

This study is related to the production of special geopolymer specimens, where high effectiveness is provided in terms of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and corrosion resistance. The study is important for the preparation of silica fume/slag based geopolymers by using waste steel and iron powder as a partial substitute for slag aggregate and thus to provide an effective solution to the disposal problems of waste metals. The electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (SE) of geopolymer tiles of 7.6 ± 0.1 mm thickness with different metal contents was measured at 4.9–7.05 GHz. Corrosion activity was monitored by measuring the half-cell potential of copper/copper sulphate (Cu/CuSO4) on specimens kept under controlled laboratory conditions for a period of 90 days at %60 relative humidity according to ASTM C876. In addition, anextensive evaluation of the optimization research on the design and proportion of mortar mixtures is presented here. EMI shielding effectiveness of slag based geopolymer tile with 10% steel particles has been determined as 26.1 dB in the frequency range 4.9–7.05 GHz. The results show that the shielding effectiveness reached a maximum of 23.1 decibels (dB) for geopolymer tiles in 40% iron powder content. Also, from experimental results, it was learned that geopolymer specimens with high slag content as binders in the mixtures showed better corrosion resistance.

Transportation of thermal and velocity slip factors on three-dimensional dual phase nanomaterials liquid flow towards an exponentially stretchable surface

Hussain, Azad; Akkurt, Nevzat; Rehman, Aysha; Alrihieli, Haifaa F.; Alharbi, Fahad M.; Abdussattar, Aishah; Eldin, Sayed M.

The fundamental purpose of this research is to elaborate on slip boundary conditions and the flow of three-dimensional, stable, incompressible, rotating movements of nanoparticles lying across a stretchable sheet. The mathematical model for fluid flow is created using the assumptions stated above. The partial differentials are produced after utilizing boundary layer estimates. The partial differential governing equations are reduced into three coupled ordinary differential equations by using similarity transformations. After, applying transformations the system is solved numerically. Numerical results are approved with the help of the MATLAB bvp4c algorithm. The analysis shows that velocity and temperature are strongly dependent on essential parameters like stretching ratio, velocity slip, rotation, thermal slip parameter, and Prandtl number. Numerical values of distinct parameters on heat flux and skin friction factors are shown in a tabulated form. Partial velocity and thermal slip are applied to the temperature surface. The comparison among the nano-sized particles copper oxide and silver with water base nanofluid affecting velocity and temperature fields are used for analysis. Moreover, the Graphical depiction designates that the velocity and temperature spreading of the thermal slip parameter is increasing. It is observed that Ag-water is the best heat carrier as compared to CuO-water nanofluid.

2D MHD Mixed Convection in a Zigzag Trapezoidal Thermal Energy Storage System Using NEPCM

Abderrahmane, Aissa; Younis, Obai; Al-Khaleel, Mohammad; Laidoudi, Houssem; Akkurt, Nevzat; Guedri, Kamel; Marzouki, Riadh

In a magnetic field, two-dimensional (2D) mixed convection is investigated within a zigzagged trapezoidal chamber. The lower side of the trapezoidal chamber is irregular, in particular, a zigzagged wall with different zigzag numbers N. The fluid particles move in the room due to the motion of the upper wall, while the porosity-enthalpy approach represents the melting process. The thermal parameters of the fluid are enhanced by what is called a nano-encapsulated phase change material (NEPCM) consisting of polyurethane as the shell and a nonadecane as the core, while water is used as the base fluid. In order to treat the governing equations, the well-known Galerkin finite element method (GFEM) is applied. In addition, the heat transfer (HT) and the dynamic behavior of flow are treated in terms of average Nusselt number and contours of streamlines. The main results show that the melt band curve of heat capacity behaves almost parabolically at smaller values of Reynolds number (Re) and larger values of Hartmann number (Ha). Moreover, minimizing the zigzag number is better in order to obtain a higher heat transfer rate.

Groups 1: control, group 2: KBrO3 (single dose 100 mg / kg gavage), group 3: ARB (50 mg / kg / day (ip) for 5 days), group 4: KBrO3 + ARB. At the end of the 5th day, alteration of fatty acid profile in erythrocyte and serum of rats in all groups was examined. Results: Rat serum essential fatty acid; palmitic acid (C16:0), myristic acid (C14:0), stearic acid (C18:0), oleic acid (C18:1), linoleic acid (C18:2), erythrocyte major fatty acids; palmitic acid (C16:0), myristic acid (C14:0), stearic acid (C18:0), oleic acid (C18:1), linoleic acid (C18:2), arachidic acid (C20:0), eicosenoic acid (C20:1), and lignoceric acid (C24:0). In addition, in our studied serum and erythrocytes; Total monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) varied between 8.91 ± 0.53-11.71 ± 2.55 and 33.71 ± 2.12-37.11 ± 2.12, respectively. It was determined that total polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) varied between 5.90 ± 1.29-9.96 ± 1.18 and 14.72 ± 3.66-22.13 ± 4.82, respectively. Conclusion: In our study, alterations in fatty acid contents were observed, and results suggesting that arbutine affects the enzymes involved in Fatty acid metabolism and has an effect on fatty acid amounts.
