Analytical solution to continuous contact problem for a functionally graded layer loaded through two dissimilar rigid punches

Polat, Alper; Kaya, Yusuf; Özşahin, Talat Şükrü

A continuous contact problem of functionally graded layer resting on an elastic semi-infinite plane, which is loaded with through two different blocks is addressed in this study. The elasticity theory and integral transformation techniques are used in solution of the problem. The problem is reduced to a system of singular integral equations, and solved numerically by the aid of appropriate Gauss–Chebyshev integration formula. It is assumed that the elastic semi-infinite homogeneous plane is isotropic and all surfaces are frictionless and continuous. The shear modulus and the mass density of the FG layer vary exponentially along the thickness direction.

Experimental investigation of the flow around a simplified ground vehicle under effects of the steady crosswind

Tunay, Tural; Firat, Erhan; Sahin, Besir

Crosswinds which stem from on-road flow conditions can deteriorate a ground vehicle's driving performance. In spite of the numerous studies investigating aerodynamics of the ground vehicles in the previous literature, there is still a need for thorough understanding of the underlying flow phenomena related to crosswind sensitivity of the ground vehicles. Therefore, the present study is aimed to investigate characteristics of the flow features around the ground vehicles under steady crosswind conditions within a range of yaw angles 0° ≤ β ≤ 15° using the Ahmed vehicle model with rear slant angles of α = 25° and 35°. Throughout the investigations, flow visualizations using dye injection technique and velocity measurements using particle image velocimetry PIV technique are conducted. The Reynolds number of the flow which is based on the free stream flow velocity U = 200 mm/s and height of the model H = 72 mm is ReH= 1.4 × 104. Results are presented in terms of time-averaged vorticity <ω> contours and streamline <ψ> patterns together with velocity magnitude ((<u>2+<w>2)1/2/U) of the flow fields. Additionally, turbulence quantities such as Reynolds stresses <u'w'>/U2 and turbulent kinetic energy TKE are presented and discussed in details. Results of the present study show that characteristics of the flow features in the near wake region downstream of the Ahmed model are very sensitive to the effects of the crosswind.

Investigation of dose and development time for thin e-beam resist poly(methyl methacrylate) for large area dense nanopattern applications

Göktaş, Oktay; Çakıroğlu, Dilek; Yıldırım, Özal; Göktaş, Nebile Işık

With the advance of nanotechnology, the demand for very dense nanopatterns over large areas continuously increases. Electron beam lithography is one of the main tools to realise this type of nanopattern. In this study we investigate the effect and interrelation of dose and development time for electron beam resist poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) for the realisation of very large area and very dense nanopatterns. For this purpose a pattern consisting of a lattice of holes with radius of 80 nm and lattice constant of 200 nm has been designed, electron beam lithography is realised on a thin resist and a detailed SEM image inspection of the pattern is recorded. Hough transform, a pattern recognition method for the digital images, is applied to SEM images to measure the radii of the holes on the images. Interrelation between dose and development time is investigated. It is found that for a very large area of dense nanopatterns the lithographic process works better for development times shorter than typically used ones.

The Effect of Therapeutic Clowning on Handwashing Technique and Microbial Colonization in Preschool Children

Arıkan, Duygu; Gürarslan Baş, Nazan; Kurudirek, Fatma; Baştopcu, Ayşe; Uslu, Hakan

Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effect of therapeutic clowning on handwashing technique and microbial colonization in preschool children. Design: This randomized controlled trial was conducted using pre-test and post-test experimental and control groups. Methods: The study was conducted between March and June 2016 in two kindergartens in eastern Turkey. The study was completed with a total of 195 students, including 90 students in the experimental group and 105 students in the control group. A questionnaire was used for data collection. This questionnaire included sections about the subjects’ descriptive characteristics and the results of the bacterial cultures of their hand swabs. For the collection of these swabs, the subjects were informed in advance, and samples were collected at predetermined times. The swabs were analyzed to determine the bacterial colonization of the subjects’ hands. Clowns and video activities were used as intervention tools in the study. Findings: In the post-test, the microbial growth was ≤103 in 68.9% and >103 in 31.1% of the subjects in the experimental group. In contrast, the growth was ≤103 in 34.3% and >103 in 65.7% of the control group subjects. The difference in the post-test microbial growths of the two groups was statistically significant (p <.000). Conclusions: The hygienic handwashing technique taught in the therapeutic clowning and videos reduced the bacterial colonization on the preschool children's hands by 50%. Moreover, this method was effective in reducing the growth rate of coliform bacteria that indicate undesirable, poor hygiene of the hands. Clinical Relevance: Considering these results, we recommend that pediatric healthcare professionals use entertaining methods such as those involving clowns to teach and guide children regarding hygienic handwashing techniques.

An investigation of the near-wake flow structure of a cylinder with guiding plates

Ekinci, Firat; Firat, Erhan; Özkan, Göktürk M.; Akilli, Hüseyin; Dancova, P.

In this study, the flow behind a circular cylinder with a pair of outer identical guiding plates was investigated using particle image velocimetry (PIV) for various angular positions of the plates (i.e. α=±70°, ±100°, and ±130°). The gaps between these plates and cylinder are equal and are 0.3D. Experiments were carried out at a subcritical Reynolds (Re=ρ·U∞·D/μ) number of 7500, based on the cylinder diameter (D) and the flow velocity (U∞). The features of the near-wake with and without the guiding plates were interpreted in terms of patterns of time-averaged vorticity and streamlines, time-averaged and fluctuating velocity components. The spectral analysis was also carried out to determine the time-dependent variation of the transverse velocity at given locations in the near-wake. Two-dimensional computations of flow around circular cylinders with and without guiding plates have also been performed to predict the timeaveraged and root-mean-square of force coefficients of the various models. It was seen that the guiding plates at an appropriate angular position can lead to substantial attenuation, or retardation, of the process of large-scale vortex formation in the near-wake, thus can lead to vortex-induced vibration (VIV) suppression without any increase in drag.

Fuzzy rule-based Fine–Kinney risk assessment approach for rail transportation systems

    Gul, Muhammet; Celik, Erkan

Rail transportation is one of the most crucial public transportation types for big and crowded cities. In rail transportation systems, stakeholders face serious issues involved in workshops, stations, lines and their environments, and general office buildings. In order to reach an increased awareness and better occupational health and safety (OHS) management, a new risk assessment approach is proposed in this study. This approach includes a combination of Fine–Kinney method and a fuzzy rule-based expert system. It captures nonlinear causal relationships between Fine–Kinney parameters. Since there is a high level of vagueness involved in the OHS risk assessment data, the rule-based expert system is developed for probability (P), exposure (E), and consequence (C) for evaluating risk score. A case study is carried out in a rail transportation system in Istanbul/Turkey, and a comparison with the classical Fine–Kinney method is discussed. Results of the case study reveal risk clusters and corresponding control measures that should be taken into consideration. The study methodologically contributes to risk assessment in the knowledge, while case study in a real rail transportation system offers an insight into public transport industry in safety improvement.

Antioxidant biomarkers in Gammarus pulex to evaluate the efficiency of electrocoagulation process in landfill leachate treatment

Serdar, Osman; Yildirim, Nuran Cikcikoglu; Tatar, Sule; Yildirim, Numan; Ogedey, Aysenur

The discharge of landfill leachate into the environment without effective treatment poses a serious threat for the aquatic ecosystems. This present study was undertaken to evaluate whether electrocoagulation process is efficient for treatment landfill leachate (LL) or not by using antioxidant biomarkers in Gammarus pulex. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) activities and malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels in G. pulex exposed to untreated, treated, and diluted rates 1/10 and 1/20 in both LL during 24 and 96 h were tested. Physiochemical characteristics of leachate (chemical oxygen demand, electrical conductivity, pH, phosphate, turbidity, NH3, Cl−, and color) were determined pre and post treatment. All physiochemical characteristics of LL decreased after treatment process. GSH-Px and CAT activities and GSH and MDA levels were increased in untreated groups when compared to control (p < 0.05). After treatment by electrocoagulation, MDA and GSH levels and CAT activities were returned to control values. In conclusion, the abilities of LL to stimulate oxidative stress in G. pulex have been proven. The results revealed that antioxidant parameters are useful biomarkers for determining the treatment efficiency of the electrocoagulation process.

Phenotypic differentiation analysis: A case study in hybridizing Çoruh trout (Salmo coruhensis), Rize trout (Salmo rizeensis) and brown trout (Salmo trutta fario)

Kocabaş, Mehmet; Kutluyer, Filiz; Başçinar, Nadir

The aim of this study was to determine and compare the phenotypic variation in Çoruh trout (Salmo coruhensis), Rize trout (Salmo rizeensis), brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) and their native hybrids (S. rizeensis × S. t. fario; S. t. fario × S. coruhensis; S. rizeensis × S. coruhensis). The numbers and diameters of red and black spots were determined on operculum, fins and above and below the lateral line. The results from this study indicate that there were differences in spotting pattern, colour pattern or fin pigmentation traits between S. rizeensis, S. t. fario, S. coruhensis and their hybrids. Consequently, native S. rizeensis, S. t. fario and S. coruhensis were affected by interaction and phenotypic plastic aspects of traits in S. rizeensis were dominant in their hybrids (S. rizeensis × S. t. fario; S. rizeensis × S. coruhensis).

Location and coverage analysis of bike-sharing stations in university campus

Mete, Suleyman; Cil, Zeynel Abidin; Özceylan, Eren

Background: Bike-sharing programmes have become popular in a large number of cities in order to facilitate bicycle use. Determining the location of bike sharing stations is vital to success of these programmes. Objectives: In this paper, a case study is applied to the Gaziantep University campus in order to find possible locations of the stations for users (students). The purpose is to minimize the total walking distance. Methods/Approach: Set and maximal covering mathematical models are considered to decide on coverage capability of determined 20 demand points and 20 potential bike stations. Then, the mathematical models of P-center and P-median are used to build possible stations and to allocate demand points to the opened stations. Finally, an undesirable facility location model is used to find the bike stations, which have the maximum distance from demand nodes, and to eliminate them. Results: In computational results, it is clearly seen that the proposed approaches set the potential bike station covering all demand points. They also provide different solutions for the campus planners. Conclusions: The methodology outlined in this study can provide university administrators with a useful insight into locations of stations, and in this way, it contributes significantly to future planning of bike-sharing systems.

On the new wave solutions to a nonlinear model arising in plasma physics

Ilhan, Onur Alp; Sulaiman, Tukur Abdulkadir; Bulut, Hasan; Baskonus, Haci Mehmet

In this paper, we utilize the sine-Gordon expansion method and construct some travelling wave solutions to the (3+1)-dimensional modified KdV-Zakharov-Kuznetsev equation which arises in plasma physics. We successfully obtain some hyperbolic function solutions to this equation. By choosing some suitable values of parameters, we perform the numerical simulation of all the obtained solutions in this study. We observed that our result may be useful in detecting some ion-acoustic waves behaviors in a magnetized plasma. All the computations and graphic plots in this article are performed with the aid of the Mathematica package.

A research on coliform bacteria in the golden Horn Estuary (Sea of Marmara, Turkey)

Karabas, Necati; Tas, Seyfettin; Erguven, Gokhan Onder; Bayhan, Hurrem

Spatio-temporal variation of the total and fecal coliform groups as bacteriological indicators in the marine environment was investigated in surface water of the Golden Horn Estuary in monthly intervals between June 2012 and May 2013. Temperature, salinity, Secchi depth, pH, dissolved oxygen and oxygen saturation were measured at 10 stations simultaneously with bacteriological analyses. Highest total coliform counts in surface water was 940×103 CFU/100 ml at the Alibeykoy Creek in November and highest fecal coliform was 178×103 CFU/100 ml at the same area in October. The lowest coliform counts were observed during summer, while the highest counts were in autumn. During rainy days, some domestic wastewater overflowing from sewerages are discharged to the estuary, which those water adversely affect water quality. The total and fecal coliform counts in surface water increased gradually from the lower to upper section of the estuary. Although the Black Sea water pumping from the Strait of Istanbul to the Golden Horn by Kagithane Creek is an important factor in the decrease of pollution and better water quality, there are still some runoff materials including uncontrolled discharges particularly in the Alibeykoy Creek. The results of this study showed that that the bacteriological pollution increased due to municipal wastewater resulting from overflow after the precipitation and the surrounding waters of the Golden Horn basin mix with surface waters. Thus, the most important factor in order to decrease the bacteriological pollution is to provide a full control of the surface discharges.

Adiguzel, Ragip; Turan, Nevin; Buldurun, Kenan; Korkoca, Hanifi

Background and Objective: Saccharin and saccharinate (sac) complexes and its anion have critical importance with biological, biochemical and pharmacological properties. The main objective of this study was to synthesize the novel mixed ligand complexes from the complexes [M(Sac)2(H2O)4]·2H2O [M: Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II)] with a second neutral ligand [L:(mmppa): 5-Methyl-4-(4-methylphenylazo)-2H-pyrazole-3-ylamine]. Methodology: The structures of the complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility, FT-IR, mass and electronic spectral studies and thermal analysis. Antimicrobial (antibacterial and anticandidal) activities of the complexes were tested against Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 51299, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Escherichia coli ATCC 35218, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 700603 and Candida albicans ATCC 64548. Results: According to the experimental results, it was determined that in Mn(II), Co(II) and Cd(II) complexes, two coordinated H2O molecules are replaced with two neutral ligands, on the other hand, in Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes, all coordinated H2O molecules are replaced with four neutral ligands. It was established that the second neutral ligand was coordinated to the metal ions via nitrogen atom of-NH2 group in pyrazole ring. In antimicrobial activity, study was determined to occur significant inhibition zones (20-24 mm) against Candida albicans ATCC 64548 strain. Conclusion: As a result, mononuclear and monomeric structure in octahedral geometry including both saccharin and azo dye ligands were synthesized and their characterizations were accomplished. The result of this study shows that novel mixed ligand-saccharinate complexes can be utilized for the development of anticandidal agents.

The effect of hygrothermal aging on the glass and carbon reinforced epoxy composites for different stacking sequences

    Dogan, Akar; Arman, Yusuf

The present paper examines the effects of hygrothermal aging on the reinforced epoxy composites. The roles of reinforcement types and stacking sequence on the mechanical properties of composites under hygrothermal aging are investigated. Four different composite materials with different stacking sequence were produced. Unidirectional E-glass and carbon fabrics with an areal density 300 gr/m2 as reinforcement and epoxy as matrix were used. Composites were manufactured using vacuum-assisted resin infusion molding. In order to determine the mechanical properties of the composites, specimens were prepared according to the ASTM standards. The aging process was carried out in climatic test cabin at a temperature of 90oC and a humidity of 90%. As a result of the tests, while the tensile strength of the glass reinforced composites decreased with aging time, no significant change was observed for carbon and hybrid composites. On the other hand, the tensile strength decreased in the transverse direction for all types of composites. XPS analysis was used to understand the distribution of atoms on the surface of specimens.

Dynamic of solitary wave solutions in some nonlinear pseudoparabolic models and Dodd–Bullough–Mikhailov equation

    Ilhan, O.A.; Bulut, H.; Sulaiman, T.A.; Baskonus, H.M.

In this study, the modified exp (- Φ (η)) -expansion function method is used in constructing some solitary wave solutions to the Oskolkov–Benjamin–Bona–Mahony–Burgers, one-dimensional Oskolkov equations and the Dodd–Bullough–Mikhailov equation. We successfully construct some singular solitons and singular periodic waves solutions with the hyperbolic, trigonometric and exponential function structures to these three nonlinear models. Under the choice of some suitable values of the parameters involved, we plot the 2D and 3D graphics to some of the obtained solutions in this study. All the obtained solutions in this study verify their corresponding equation. We perform all the computations in this study with the help of the Wolfram Mathematica software. The obtained solutions in this study may be helpful in explaining some practical physical problems.

Yildirim, Ozal; Eristi, Bekis; Eristi, Huseyin; Unal, Sencer; Erol, Yavuz; Demir, Yakup

In this paper, a new generation Internet-based Power Quality Monitoring System (IPQMS) that transmits real-time power quality (PQ) data over the internet has been developed. The monitoring system has the ability to measure PQ parameters in accordance with the related standards. This monitoring system includes many hardware and software designs and presents an efficient structure. PQ parameters are determined by signal processing algorithms that are applied to the current and voltage signals continuously obtained from the electrical power network. These signal processing algorithms are performed as embedded functions in the FPGA device. The PQ data obtained from the measurement points are transmitted to a server by UDP/IP communication protocol that is implemented in the FPGA device. The monitoring, reporting and permanently storing tasks are accomplished with the real-time automation software and web applications that running on the server computer. With its innovative software and hardware designs, the proposed monitoring approach presents a very useful monitoring structure that can be used in the PQ field.

    F(T, R) theory of gravity

Salti, Mustafa; Korunur, Murat; Acikgoz, Irfan; Pirinccioglu, Nurettin; Binbay, Figen

We mainly focus on the idea that the dynamics of the whole universe may be understood by making use of torsion T and curvature R at the same time. The f(T,R)-gravity can be considered as a fundamental gravitational theory describing the evolution of the universe. The model can produce the unification of the general relativity (GR), teleparallel gravity (TPG), f(R)-gravity and f(T)-gravity theories. For this purpose, the corresponding Lagrangian density is written in terms of an arbitrary function of the torsion and curvature scalars. Furthermore, we use the absence/existence puzzle of relativistic neutron stars and thermodynamical laws as constraining tools for the new proposal.

Arrhythmia detection using deep convolutional neural network with long duration ECG signals

Yıldırım, Özal; Pławiak, Paweł; Tan, Ru-San; Acharya, U. Rajendra

This article presents a new deep learning approach for cardiac arrhythmia (17 classes) detection based on long-duration electrocardiography (ECG) signal analysis. Cardiovascular disease prevention is one of the most important tasks of any health care system as about 50 million people are at risk of heart disease in the world. Although automatic analysis of ECG signal is very popular, current methods are not satisfactory. The goal of our research was to design a new method based on deep learning to efficiently and quickly classify cardiac arrhythmias. Described research are based on 1000 ECG signal fragments from the MIT - BIH Arrhythmia database for one lead (MLII) from 45 persons. Approach based on the analysis of 10-s ECG signal fragments (not a single QRS complex) is applied (on average, 13 times less classifications/analysis). A complete end-to-end structure was designed instead of the hand-crafted feature extraction and selection used in traditional methods. Our main contribution is to design a new 1D-Convolutional Neural Network model (1D-CNN). The proposed method is 1) efficient, 2) fast (real-time classification) 3) non-complex and 4) simple to use (combined feature extraction and selection, and classification in one stage). Deep 1D-CNN achieved a recognition overall accuracy of 17 cardiac arrhythmia disorders (classes) at a level of 91.33% and classification time per single sample of 0.015 s. Compared to the current research, our results are one of the best results to date, and our solution can be implemented in mobile devices and cloud computing.

Anthocyanin profile of strawberry fruit as affected by extraction conditions

    Karaaslan, Nagihan M.; Yaman, Mehmet

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of extraction conditions to determine anthocyanin compounds in strawberry fruit. Anthocyanin profile of this fruit were determined via high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry. Flow rate of mobile phase, fragmentor potential, injection volume, and column temperature were applied to be optimum values as 0.5 mL min−1, 110 V, 5 µL, and 30°C, respectively. The extraction process was the important step in the isolation and identification of anthocyanins. For this purpose, anthocyanin contents in strawberry fruit were examined in terms of solvent type, extraction time, and liquid:solid ratio (v:w). The best extraction conditions in this fruit were found to be methanol as solvent, 30 min as extraction time and 1:1 as liquid:solid ratio (v:w). The results showed that the anthocyanin contents of strawberry fruit change by altering extraction conditions.

Trace Metal Levels in Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Cultured in Net Cages in a Reservoir and Evaluation of Human Health Risks from Consumption

Varol, Memet; Kaya, Gülderen Kurt; Alp, Sumru Anık; Sünbül, Muhammet Raşit

Although fish consumption has positive health effects, metals accumulated in fish can cause human health risks. In this study, the levels of ten metals in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farmed in the Keban Dam Reservoir, which has the biggest rainbow trout production capacity in Turkey, were determined and compared with the maximum permissible levels (MPLs). Also, human health risks associated with rainbow trout consumption were assessed. The metal concentrations in rainbow trout were found below the MPLs. The estimated daily intake of each metal was much lower than the respective tolerable daily intake. The target hazard quotient (THQ) for individual metal and total THQ for combined metals did not exceed 1, indicating no health risk for consumers. The cancer risk (CR) value for inorganic arsenic was within the acceptable lifetime risk range of 10−6 and 10−4. For carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects, the maximum allowable fish consumption rates were high enough to ensure the human health. According to these results, the consumption of rainbow trout farmed in the Keban Dam Reservoir does not pose a risk on human health.
