- MakaleYalnız künye2017Scopus SJRQ2The anatomical and micromorphological properties of three endemic and medicinal Salvia species (Lamiaceae) in Erzincan (Turkey)
Polat, R.; Cakilcioglu, U.; Selvi, S.; Türkmen, Z.; Kandemir, A.
In this study, we comparatively investigated three endemic Salvia species spreading in Erzincan (Turkey) in terms of anatomy and micromorphology. For anatomical investigation, cross sections taken from stems and leaves of the species were examined under light microscope. For micromorphological investigation, epidermal surface and nutlet structure were examined using scanning electron microscopy. The S. euphratica and S. divaricata species were examined anatomically and micromorphologically for the first time, and S. hypargea was examined micromorphologically for the first time. In anatomical examinations, it was seen that stem and leaf structures of the species were similar. In micromorphological analyses, it has been seen that hairiness of the nutlet surface and nutlet ornamentations (verrucate and rugose type) created a difference between the species.

Hayta, Sukru; Tasar, Neslihan; Kiran, Yasar; Baser, Birol
Centaurea derderiifolia Wagenitz., Centaurea drabifolia Sm. subsp. floccosa (Boiss.) Wagenitz & Greuter and Centaurea kotschyi (Boiss. & Heldr.) Hayek var. floccosa (Boiss.) Wagenitz, which are endemic taxa from Turkey belonging to Centaurea sect. Cheirolepis, were subjected to morphological, karyological and palynological investigations. The somatic chromosome numbers, pollen morphology and detailed morphometric properties were examined. The somatic chromosome numbers were determined as 2n = 2x = 36 in C. derderiifolia, C. kotschyi var. floccosa, and C. drabifolia subsp. floccosa. Karyotype analysis indicated that chromosomes of these Centaurea taxa generally have median region (m), submedian region (sm) and rarely median point (M) karyotypes. The pollen morphology of these endemic taxa of the genus Centaurea was investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy. The pollen grains of the examined species are mainly isopolar and radially symmetric, subprolate, tricolporate. Tectum ornamentation is scabrate and scabrate-perforate, amb triangular. The pollen grains of all taxa studied are 3-zonocolporate. The colpus is usually long, acute at ends and with smooth membrane. Pollen grains belonging to Cheirolepis section reveal homogeneity in their characters.

- MakaleYalnız künye2017Scopus SJRQ2Palaeoseismic history of the eastern part of the North Anatolian Fault (Erzincan, Turkey): Implications for the seismicity of the Yedisu seismic gap
Zabci, Cengiz; Akyüz, H. Serdar; Sançar, Taylan
The North Anatolian Fault showed a remarkable seismic activity especially between 1939 and 1999, when the westward migrating earthquake sequence created surface ruptures more than 1000 km, leaving unbroken only the Marmara segments, to the west, and the Yedisu Segment, to the east along the main strand of the fault. To understand the palaeoseismicity of the Yedisu Seismic Gap, we undertook trench investigations close to the village of Balaban SarA +/- kaya, on the western part of the Yedisu Segment. We found evidence for at least five surface faulting earthquakes, from which only two are correlated with the 18 July 1784 CE and 27 June 1583 CE historical events. Although the surface rupture of the 1784 CE was reported by other trench studies, the evidence of 1583 CE event is presented for the first time. In consideration with other historical earthquakes, affecting the region east of Erzincan, we suggest that this particular section of the North Anatolian Fault may be in a seismically quiescent period, following a cluster of earthquakes in its near history. In order to test this hypothesis, further studies are needed to increase our knowledge on the temporal and spatial seismic behaviour of the Yedisu Segment, which has potential to create an earthquake with M (w) similar to 7.2 in the near future.

Güneş, Suzan; Savran, Ahmet; Paksoy, Mehmet Yavuz; Koşar, Müberra; Çakılcıoğlu, Uğur
This study identifies wild plants collected for medical purposes by local people of Karaisalı County in the Mediterranean Region of Turkey, together with the uses and local names of these plants. A field study was carried out over a period of approximately 2 years (2008–2010). During this period, 129 vascular plant specimens were collected. Demographic characteristics of participants, local plant names, parts used and methods of preparation of the plants were investigated and recorded. Within the scope of the study, relevant plant species were collected; herbarium materials were prepared; and the specimens were labelled. In addition, the use-value of the species was determined and calculated for the medicinal plants included in the study. A total of 129 medical plants belonging to 59 families were identified in the region. The most common families were: Lamiaceae (14 plants), Asteraceae (11 plants), Rosaceae (10 plants), Apiaceae (5 plants), Euphorbiaceae (5 plants). A comparison of the data obtained in this study with experimental data obtained in previous laboratory studies, confirmed most of the ethnobotanical uses. The plant flora of Karaisalı is threatened by such factors as grazing, expansion of new agricultural lands, and unsustainable harvesting of plants to generate income. Steps should be taken immediately to ensure the inclusion of relevant flora within conservation designations.

- MakaleYalnız künye2016Scopus SJRQ1Cultural perceptions and clinical experiences of nursing students in Eastern Turkey
Karatay, G.; Bowers, B.; Karadag, E. B.; Demir, M. C.
Aim: This study explored Turkish nursing students' perceptions of providing care to patients culturally different from themselves. Background: Increasing migration will increase the need for nurses to provide care across cultural groups. Methods: Twenty one students in the second year of a 4-year nursing programme participated in 3 focus groups. Data were analysed using directed content analysis. Research questions were based on Campinha-Bacote's model. Results: Three themes were identified: perceived cultural barriers, perceived cultural facilitators and identifying culturally sensitive actions. Generally, students were able to define culture but were unable to say how culture would affect nursing practice. Discussion: Students were unprepared to practice in a multicultural setting. Cultural awareness is insufficient for determining how to respond to cultural differences. Limitations: The study is limited by its restriction to a single school of nursing and a single curriculum. Conclusions: The multiple, ongoing political, religious and ethnic conflicts will require nurses to provide care to patients from other cultural groups, in some instances to people identified as adversaries to the group the nurse may represent. Understanding cultural differences is insufficient to do this effectively. Implications for nursing education: Learning culturally competent care requires opportunities to provide, be guided through and reflect on care to individuals from different cultural groups. Implications for organizational and public policies: Standards for culturally competent care should be adopted by all care delivery settings. Public and organizational policies openly declaring healthcare settings as cultural safe zones, and explicit organizational commitment to culturally safe care, would set clear expectations for providers and help ensure a positive patient experience.

Asbestos is dangerous for health and is forbidden to use in Turkey, but villagers who live in rural eastern part still use it especially for their home for insulation purposes and even as a substitute for baby powder. Therefore, geological and chemical properties of this type of soil, which is near the settlement, should be characterized and identified from the point of view of health. Beypinari asbestos deposits are located at Beypinari village, about 90 km southeast of Sivas, Turkey within Central Anatolian Ophiolites. Therefore, in the present study, the existence of chrysotile in Beypinari asbestos deposit were characterized and identified by mineralogical analysis and by major, trace, REE analysis. The results show that the samples contain different amount of calcite mineral, the main mineral being chrysotile.

Cooper, Alan F.; Boztug, Durmus; Palin, J. Michael; Martin, Candace E.; Numata, Mihoko
The late Cretaceous A-type Kara double dagger ayA +/- r pluton in Central Anatolia, Turkey, intrudes and entrains xenoliths of Palaeozoic limestone. Carbonatitic magmatic rocks within the syenite have been previously interpreted (Schuiling in Nature, 192:1280, 1961) to result from metasomatic alteration and syntectic melting of marble. Carbonatites and associated calcite-syenites exhibit mineralogical characteristics (Ab-rich plagioclase, Ba-rich K-feldspar, low-Mg# biotite) that are petrogenetically more evolved than the host syenitic suite. Geochemically, carbonate-rich magmatic rocks are greatly enriched in Sr, Ba, Th, and REE and have higher LREE/HREE ratios than either syenites or marbles. In terms of O-C-Sr-Pb isotope ratios, the carbonatite/calcite-syenite suite form a consistent and geochemically coherent group that is distinct from the marble country rock and xenolith population, but similar to some of the syenitic, and particularly the nepheline syenite components of the Kara double dagger ayA +/- r pluton. Other silicate magmatic rocks are geochemically, isotopically, and geochronologically different, suggesting the pluton is composite. Overall, the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the carbonatites are incompatible with binary mixing of syenite and marble but are consistent with derivation of carbonatite from petrogenetically evolved foid syenite. Carbonate-silicate rock types have modal variations compatible with an origin by fractional crystallisation, rather than by liquid immiscibility.

Flavour of meat or sea products is generally thought to consist of the volatile components sense in the nose, both through the nostrils and from inside the mouth. Taste results from the combination of basic flavors (sweet, sour, bitter, salt and umami). The flavors and aromas associated with meat and sea foods are generally those that develop during heating and cooking. Animal products such as meat and sea foods have very complex composition and definition of their quality are very complicated.

The effect of the duration of simulated transportation on blood SOD (Superoxide Dismutase), GSH-Px (Glutathione Peroxidase), AST (Aspartate Transaminase), ALT (Alanine Transaminase), GGT (Gamma-Glutamyl Transpeptidase), LDH (Lactic Dehydrogenase) enzyme levels and NO (Nitric Oxide) and MDA (Malondialdehyde) product levels was investigated in Japanese quails. Simulated transportation was carried out with a road simulator which was calibrated for Turkish roads conditions. Animals were loaded into well ventilated carrier boxes and carried at 2 and 5 h on the simulator. Blood samples were collected from 10-weeks-old Japanese Quails just after transportation. A significant (p<0.05) increase in all measured plasma parameters (except GGT) at 5 h transportation was observed. However, all of the plasma parameters have not shown a significant increase at 2 h transportation. This transportation duration might be the evidence of the time duration in still safe zone for Japanese Quails for that condition.

Boztug, Durmus; Güney, Ozlem; Heizler, Matt; Jonckheere, Raymond C.; Tichomirowa, Marion; Otlu, Nazmi
The Kaman-Kirsehir region intrusions were generated in a post-collisional extensional setting following Cenomanian-Turonian docking of an oceanic island arc, comprising the supra-subduction zone (SSZ) Central Anatolian ophiolite (CAO), onto the Tauride-Anatolide Platform (TAP). These granitoids have been named, from N to S, the Camsari quartz syenite, Hamit quartz syenite, Bayindir nepheline-cancrinite syenite, Durmuslu nepheline-nosean-melanite syenite porphyry and Baranadag quartz monzonite. They intrude the crustal metasediments of the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex (CACC) and CAO and are unconformably overlain by Upper Paleocene to Lower-Middle Eocene sediments. The single-zircon Pb-207-Pb-206 evaporation age of the Camsari unit is 95.7 +/- 5.1 Ma; those of the Hamit and Baranadag units are indistinguishable with a weighted mean of 74.3 +/- 4.5 Ma. The amphibole 40Ar-39Ar ages of the Hamit and Baranadag units are almost identical with a weighted mean of 72.7 +/- 0.1 Ma. The apatite fission-track age vs elevation plot for the Camsari, Hamit, Durmuslu and Baranadag samples reveals rapid exhumation (>1 km/Ma) between similar to 57 and similar to 61 Ma, consistent with the results of track-length modelling. This Early-Middle Paleocene rapid exhumation is thought to result from uplift triggered by continent (TAP) - continent (Eurasian plate; EP) collision following the closure of Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan (IAE) ocean that also initiated the formation of peripheral foreland basins in central Anatolia. Boztug, Durmus; Türksever, Esra; Heizler, Matt; Jonckheere, Raymond C.; Tichomirowa, Marion
The Karacayir syenite, intruding the Palaeozoic crustal metamorphics and unconformably overlain by Upper Paleocene to Eocene Tokus formation in the north of Sivas (east-central Anatolia), has been studied with respect to Pb-207-Pb-206 single zircon evaporation, biotite 40Ar-39Ar, and apatite fission-track geothermochronology. Pb-207-Pb-206 single zircon evaporation dating yields an age of 99.0 +/- 11.0 Ma (Cenomanian-Turonian) which is considered to be the intrusion age. Biotite 40Ar-39Ar age determination gives a cooling age of ca. 65 Ma. Apatite fission-track dating, combined with T-t modeling based on track-length distribution data, determines a fast tectonic exhumation with an uplift rate of > 1 mm/a which occurred 58-61 Ma ago. This Middle Paleocene fast tectonic uplift is considered to have resulted from a compressional regime induced by the collision between the Tauride-Anatolide platform (TAP) and the Eurasian plate (EP) along the Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan (IAE) suture zone following the closure of the north-dipping subducted IAE ocean which belongs to northern Neo-Tethyan realm. This compressional regime has also formed the peripheral foreland basins in central Anatolia.
