- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ1Effect of light and noise pollution on oxidative stress and proximate composition in Dreissena polymorpha
Serdar, Osman; Demirtaş Erol, Nida; Aydin, Ayşe Nur
In this study, it was aimed to determine the effect of sound and light pollution on Zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) by biomarker and nutritional composition. For this purpose, an experimental design was carried out in laboratory conditions where the model was exposed to live sound, light, and combined sound + light parameters for 30 min every hour over 96 h. Changes in the biomarkers superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities, as well as glutathione (GSH) and thiobarbituric acid (TBARS) levels, were assessed in the model organism exposed to sound, light, and sound + light pollution. The changes in protein and fat amounts were determined. When the changes in biomarkers were examined statistically compared to the control, there was no significant decrease in SOD activity (p < 0.05), a significant increase in CAT activity in sound and sound+light, but a significant decrease in light (p < 0.05), no significant difference in GPx activity (p > 0.05). It was determined that there was a significant increase in GSH and TBARS levels in all three parameters. Significant changes were also observed in the proximate composition. As a result, exposure to sound, light and sound+light pollution caused an increase in oxidative damage and decreases in protein and lipid composition were detected.

This paper provides a comprehensive and comprehensible analysis of the conversion of magnetic energy in magnetocaloric materials, as well as the application of magnetic refrigeration that relies on the magnetocaloric effect. The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) refers to the phenomenon of cooling or heating that takes place in a magnetic material when an external magnetic field is introduced or removed under adiabatic conditions. This effect also occurs in reverse, when the application or removal of an external magnetic field induces cooling or warming in the material. For a considerable period, the phenomena referred to as “adiabatic demagnetization” has been recognized, wherein the practical use of the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in magnetic materials is observed. Magnetic materials exhibit the phenomenon known as the magnetocaloric effect close to their critical temperature. The magnetocaloric system exhibits superior environmental friendliness and efficiency compared to conventional refrigeration cycle systems that rely on vapor compression. Magnetic refrigeration is a cooling system that operates by utilizing the magnetocaloric effect. This methodology can be employed to achieve reduced temperatures, including those within the typical operational range of conventional refrigeration systems. In the realm of magnetic and electromagnetic energy conversion, the system's coefficient of performance (COP) attains a theoretical efficiency of 30%–60% of the Carnot cycle. The exploration of magnetic refrigeration is now underway, with a focus on utilizing low magnetic fields in the vicinity of room temperature. The objective is to facilitate the development of commercial devices that employ permanent magnets as the primary source of magnetic field. The utilization of a magnetocaloric heat pump in a magnetic refrigerator is employed as a cooling mechanism, relying on magnetocaloric materials. These materials present a promising substitute for conventional refrigeration technology that relies on compressors. Theoretical investigations have indicated that refrigeration systems utilizing the magnetocaloric effect have the potential to achieve energy efficiency levels that are around 35% higher compared to vapor compression systems. In addition, it should be noted that cooling systems utilizing magnetocaloric materials exhibit reduced noise levels as a result of the lack of a compressor. This particular technological approach involves the utilization of coolants that are water-based, as opposed to the conventional use of gaseous refrigerants.

Background: The present study set out to ascertain the effects of combined exercises, consisting of resistance training and plyometric exercises at varying degrees of intensity, on biochemical and respiratory parameters in female volleyball players. Methods: The research group consisted of 20 professional female volleyball players who participated in national and international volleyball competitions. Participants were randomly divided into two groups: a control group (n = 10) that performed low-intensity exercises at 30%–50% intensity, and an experimental group (n = 10) that followed a high-intensity exercise programme at 60%–80% intensity. Blood samples and spirometric respiratory function values were collected before and after the 8-week exercise program. The biochemical analyses included the assessment of luteinizing hormone (LH), growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and total iron binding capacity. Respiratory function was analysed using forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), and forced expiratory flow at mid-expiration (FEF). The data were analysed using the SPSS statistical package. Results: The results demonstrated a decline in IGF-1, GH, and total iron-binding capacity levels, and an increase in LH levels, in the biochemical parameters of the control group. Additionally, FVC, FEV1, and FEF values exhibited an increase in the control group. Conversely, the experimental group demonstrated a significant increase in LH, GH, IGF-1, and total iron-binding capacity levels. With regard to respiratory parameters, an increase in FEF values was observed, whilst FVC and FEV1 values decreased. The present findings suggest that high-intensity plyometric resistance exercises have more pronounced effects on biochemical responses, but may trigger different adaptation mechanisms in respiratory capacit. The results of the study showed that there was a difference between the control group’s GH, IGF-1, FVC, and FEV1 data and the experimental group’s GH, IGF-1, FVC, and FEV1 data. Conclusions: In conclusion, plyometric resistance exercises at varying intensities influence both respiratory and biochemical parameters in female volleyball players. Accordingly, well-planned and individualised plyometric resistance training programmes are thought to enhance both the health and athletic performance of athletes.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ1Airbnbfication and gentrification from the perspective of rent gap theory: the case of Beyoğlu, Istanbul
Çobangil, Orçun; Ateş, Erdem
This paper examines how Airbnbification affects the rental market in Istanbul's historic Beyoğlu district using rent gap theory. Given Turkey's recent soaring inflation rates, special emphasis is placed on inflation, aligning with Neil Smith's focus on its impact on rent gap formation. Beyoğlu's history and urban development in the context of neoliberalisation of Istanbul are considered, highlighting why it alone hosts 15.36% of Turkey's Airbnb listings. The analysis proceeds in four stages: first, by comparing long-term rental incomes with Airbnb revenues; second, by assessing inflation and rental growth rates; third, using Pearson correlation to analyse inflation and Airbnbification; and finally, employing the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) to explore both short- and long-term relationships and Granger causality. These findings suggest Airbnb listings, rising rents, and inflation contribute to the ongoing rent gap, positioning Airbnbification as the latest phase of Beyoğlu's gentrification.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Enhanced radiation shielding via incorporating europium oxide in 316L stainless steel: Synthesis, physical, microstructural, shielding, and mechanical properties
Tekin, H.O.; Yayla, Nihal; Albayrak, M.Gökhan; Güler, Ömer; Baykal, Duygu Sen; Alkarrani, Hessa; ALMisned, Ghada
316L stainless steel is widely utilized in various industries due to its excellent corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and biocompatibility, making it a preferred material for applications in nuclear filed. However, enhancing its radiation shielding and mechanical properties through reinforcement strategies, such as the addition of high-Z materials like Europium(III) oxide, is crucial for extending its functionality in high-radiation environments, where improved performance is essential for safety and durability. In this study, 316L stainless steel composites reinforced with varying amounts of Eu2O3 (1%, 5%, 10%, and 20%) were synthesized and investigated for their structural, mechanical, and radiation shielding properties. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that the face-centered cubic (FCC) structure of the steel matrix was preserved up to 5% Eu2O3 reinforcement, while higher concentrations led to phase formation and crystallographic changes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis showed uniform element distribution at low reinforcement levels, with particle clustering at 20% Eu2O3. Transmission factors (TFs) were evaluated using PHITS simulations for photon energies of 0.662 MeV, 1.1732 MeV, and 1.3325 MeV. The 20% Eu2O3 composite exhibited the lowest TF and highest attenuation properties, confirmed by mass and linear attenuation coefficients. Elastic modulus values decreased from 224.46 GPa in pure 316L to 189.26 GPa with 20% Eu2O3 reinforcement, reflecting the inverse relationship between mechanical stiffness and radiation shielding performance. Benchmarking against other shielding materials demonstrated superior performance of the Eu2O3-reinforced steel in gamma-ray attenuation. The 20% Eu2O3 composite shows strong potential for applications in nuclear radiation shielding where attenuation efficiency is prioritized over mechanical properties.

Mercury is an industrial toxin with detrimental effects on the reproductive system. This study explored the impact of naringenin (NAR) on testicular toxicity and apoptosis in rats chronically exposed to mercury chloride (MC). The research involved 41 adult male Wistar-Albino rats aged about 2.5 months, which were allocated into 5 groups: group 1 was a control group, group 2 received 100mg/kg of NAR, group 3 was exposed to MC, group 4 received both MC and 50mg/kg of NAR, and group 5 received both MC and 100mg/kg of NAR. For the treatments, the control group took 1mL/kg saline via intraperitoneal (ip) injection and 1mL/kg corn oil via gavage. MC was administered at 0.4mg/kg/day to the MC groups via ip, and NAR was delivered in corn oil at 50 and 100mg/kg/day to the respective NAR groups via gavage. All treatments were performed over a period of 20 days, with MC administration starting 1 hour after NAR administration. The irregularity and loss in spermatogenic cell organization, degeneration and vacuolization in tubules, edema, and congestion in interstitial areas of the testicular tissue of the MC group were alleviated by NAR administration. In addition, the increase in Caspase 3, iNOS, and eNOS immunoreactivities of the MC group were alleviated by NAR administration. In conclusion, it was found that NAR had protective and therapeutic effects against oxidative damage, histopathological changes, apoptosis, and altered spermatological parameters resulting from MC exposure in the testis, and 100mg/kg NAR provided positive effects on altered histopathological analysis, spermatological parameters, and apoptosis.

Utku, Anıl
Dental radiography is used as an important diagnostic tool in the field of dentistry. Dental radiography provides detailed visualization of teeth, jaws and surrounding structures. Dental radiographs are manually interpreted by dentists for diagnosis and treatment purposes. Artificial intelligence methods are successfully applied to automate various image-related processes such as diagnosis and classification. In this study, a hybrid ConvViT model was developed to detect caries, fillings, impacted teeth, implants and normal teeth from dental radiography images. ConvViT combined the advantages of CNN and ViT architectures and provided more successful classification of dental radiography images. ConvViT was compared with popular pre-trained deep learning models such as ResNet-50, VGG-16, EfficientNetB0, and DenseNet201. Experimental results showed that ConvViT outperformed the compared models with 95% accuracy, 95% precision, 94% recall and 94% F-score. ConvViT makes a significant contribution to the development of artificial intelligence-based automatic diagnosis systems in the field of dentistry by effectively modeling both local and long-range features thanks to its hybrid structure.

The Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) is a widely used self-report measure of subjective well-being, but studies of its measurement invariance across a large number of nations remain limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset–with data collected between 2020 and 2022 –to assess measurement invariance of the SWLS across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups (N = 56,968). All participants completed the SWLS under largely uniform conditions. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that configural and metric invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional SWLS model has universal applicability. Full scalar invariance was achieved across gender identities and age groups. Based on alignment optimisation methods, partial scalar invariance was achieved across all but three national groups and across all languages represented in the BINS. There were large differences in latent SWLS means across nations and languages, but negligible-to-small differences across gender identities and age groups. Across nations, greater life satisfaction was significantly associated with greater financial security and being in a committed relationship or married. The results of this study suggest that the SWLS largely assesses a common unidimensional construct of life satisfaction irrespective of respondent characteristics (i.e., national group, gender identities, and age group) or survey presentation (i.e., survey language). This has important implications for the assessment of life satisfaction across nations and provides information that will be useful for practitioners aiming to promote subjective well-being internationally. Introduction and Objective. Menstrual poverty lies at the intersection of poverty, sustainability, reproductive rights, and gender inequality. The study investigates menstrual poverty among women affected by the 2023 earthquake in Turkey. Materials and Method. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted between 24 April – 24 May 2023 with 400 women impacted by the earthquake. Data were collected via social media using a survey form. Chi-square tests, Bonferroni test, and binary logistic regression model were used for statistical analysis. Results. The mean age of participants was 27.27 ± 8.40 years; 69.5% had higher education, 57.0% lived in urban areas, and 90.5% had no chronic disease. A significant relationship was found between access to menstrual products and basic needs (clean water, toilet paper, soap, safe toilet access, and healthcare) during menstruation after the earthquake (p<0.05). A significant correlation was also observed between disruptions to the menstrual cycle and the following variables: lack of privacy, perception that lack of privacy affected menstruation, healthcare access, and difficulty obtaining menstrual products (p<0.05). Conclusions. Most participants faced difficulties accessing menstrual products, water, hygiene supplies, privacy, and healthcare. Those living in tents or containers reported greater challenges. These barriers contributed to menstrual poverty and impacted women’s cycles. As menstrual health and hygiene are basic needs and human rights, menstrual poverty must be addressed globally.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Y2O3-Doped BioGlass Coatings for Ti-6Al-4V Alloy: Insights into Degradation, Bioactivity, Ion Release, Adhesion, and Corrosion Behavior
Say, Yakup; Aslan, Naim; Cihangir, Salih; Murat, Oğuzkağan; Çaydaş, Ulaş
The Ti-6Al-4V alloy is particularly favored for orthopedic applications. However, important issues such as corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and ion release need to be addressed. Therefore, this study aims to enhance the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility and reduce the ion release of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy by applying Y2O3-doped bioglass bioceramic coatings. The coatings were synthesized using the sol-gel method, including pure BioGlass and BioGlass with 1, 5, and 10 wt pct Y2O3. These coatings were then evaluated for their corrosion resistance, adhesion strength, degradation behavior, bioactivity, and ion release. The results showed that all coatings exhibited homogeneous, crack-free, and porous morphologies, which are favorable for osteointegration. The addition of 10 wt pct Y2O3 to the BioGlass coating resulted in a 52 pct increment in adhesion strength, which increased from 13.72 ± 2.80 MPa for single BioGlass coatings to 20.81 ± 2.53 MPa. All samples showed degradation values lower than 1 wt pct. Single BioGlass coatings significantly enhanced the bioactivity of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. However, the addition of Y2O3 negatively impacted BioGlass bioactivity, leading to a noticeable decrease as the Y2O3 content increased. Conversely, the presence of Y2O3 negatively impacted bioactivity and corrosion resistance while increasing the release of Ti ions. Specifically, the release of Ti ions increased from 79.5 ± 0.8 ppb in uncoated samples to 253.7 ± 15.3 ppb in BG-coated samples. For 1, 5, and 10 pct Y2O3-added samples, Ti releases were measured as 192.2 ± 33.6 ppb, 168.5 ± 62.4 ppb, and 194.3 ± 54.4 ppb, respectively. This research highlights the potential of tailored BioGlass coatings to improve the performance of Ti-6Al-4V alloys in orthopedic implant applications, particularly for enhancing bone integration and reducing implant failure.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Evaluating the high-temperature resistance of self-compacting mortar incorporating waste andesite powder as a mineral admixture
Karataş, Mehmet; Bozcan, Emre; Dener, Murat
Significant amounts of waste material are generated at various stages of andesite stone processing, including mining, cutting, and polishing. Despite this, limited research has been conducted on the potential use of waste andesite powder (WAP) as a mineral admixture. The impact of WAP on the high-temperature resistance of cement-based composites remains largely unexplored. This study aims to evaluate the benefits of incorporating WAP as a partial substitute for Portland cement. Self-compacting mortars (SCMs) with varying WAP replacement rates (5%–30%) were produced and subjected to temperatures of 300°C, 600°C, and 900°C. Additionally, ternary mixtures of WAP and silica fume were produced for comparative analysis. The results showed that SCMs containing up to 10% WAP exhibited higher 90-day compressive strength compared to the control sample. Furthermore, WAP inclusion improved high-temperature resistance, and the use of WAP at higher replacement rates was feasible when combined with mineral admixtures possessing high pozzolanic activity, such as silica fume.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ1Impact of controlled oxidation and incorporation of high entropy rare-earth alloys (HE-REAs) on the structural, physical, optical, and radiation shielding performance of zinc-borate glasses
Ilik, E.; Guler, Seval Hale; Güler, Ömer; Durmus, Hasan; Kavaz, E.; Birdogan, Selcuk; ALMisned, Ghada; Kilic, G.; Tekin, H.O.
This study investigates the influence of high entropy oxide (HEO) and high entropy alloy oxide (HEAO) dopants on the structural, optical, and radiation shielding properties of zinc-borate glasses. Two synthesis routes were employed through direct mechanical alloying of five rare-earth oxides such as Sm2O3, Ho2O3, Er2O3, Yb2O3, Gd2O3 to form (SmHoErYbGd)2O3 HEO, and mechanical alloying of the corresponding rare-earth metals followed by oxidation to produce HEAO of the same elemental composition. The central hypothesis proposed that the dopant structure and oxygen coordination, not just elemental presence, critically influence the on characteristic behaviors in terms of radiation attenuation. Structural analyses confirmed that HEAO-doped glasses exhibit more homogeneous, amorphous networks. Optical characterizations revealed red-shifted absorption edges and lower Urbach energies in HEAO samples, indicating reduced disorder. HEAO-doped glasses showed superior gamma-ray shielding, with higher linear attenuation coefficients and lower half-value layers than HEO or undoped samples. Most notably, HEAO glass achieved the highest fast neutron removal cross-section, surpassing water, graphite, and B4C. These findings demonstrate that rare-earth high entropy alloy oxides offer a structurally optimized pathway for designing next-generation multifunctional glasses for radiation-related applications.

ALMisned, Ghada; Susoy, Gulfem; Baykal, Duygu Sen; Alkarrani, Hessa; Güler, Ömer; Issa, Shams A.M.; Zakaly, Hesham M.H.; Tekin, H.O.
This study explores the gamma-ray and neutron shielding properties and mechanical performance of eight Fe-based alloys with varying elemental compositions and densities. Different parameters such as mass attenuation coefficients, linear attenuation coefficients, half-value layer, tenth-value layer, mean free path, fast neutron removal cross-sections, transmission factors were analysed using PHITS and Phy-X/PSD codes. Moreover, elastic modulus values were calculated for each alloy sample. Our results reveal that the S9 alloy, with high density and tungsten contribution, exhibited superior shielding and mechanical properties, achieving the lowest TF, HVL, and TVL values. In contrast, the low-density S1 alloy performed weakest, reflecting its lighter elemental composition. Intermediate alloys like MAR-302 and Cupero-Nickel showed balanced performance, suitable for moderate shielding needs. Strong correlations between elemental compositions, particularly high-Z elements like tungsten and boron, and shielding efficiency were observed. It can be concluded that optimizing elemental composition and density is critical for designing alloys with enhanced multifunctional properties.

Çimen, Murat; Güven, Alper
In this study, the effectiveness of using cluster analysis in determining the changes in the number of animals in the field of goat and buffalo breeding in the TRB1 region was tested. The numbers of goats and buffalos used in the research were obtained from the records kept by TÜİK between 2004 and 2023. According to the cluster analysis results, the numbers of buffalos in Elazığ and Bingöl provinces was found to be higher than Malatya and Tunceli provinces between 2004 and 2023. According to the specified years, while Bingöl province was found to be higher than other provinces in terms of the numbers of goats, it was determined that Malatya province had the lowest values. When analyzed by year, the numbers of buffalos in the provinces of the TRB1 region for the years 2004-2006 was found to be higher than the following years. In other words, it is understood that the numbers of buffalos has been decreasing in the TRB1 region since 2007. In the TRB1 region, goat numbers between 2012-2023 were found to be higher than those between 2004-2011. Accordingly, it can be said that there has been an increase in the number of goats in the TRB1 region since 2012. In the TRB1 region, appropriate regulations need to be made, taking into account the differences between provinces and years in terms of the numbers of buffalos and goats. In this study, it was seen that cluster analysis could be used successfully in determining the differences in animal numbers according to provinces and years.

Uysal, I. Tonguç; Karabacak, Volkan; Aykut, Tunahan; Ring, Uwe; Liu, Entao; Sancar, Taylan; Leonard, Nicole; Tong, Kui; Todd, Andrew J.; Temel, Abidin
The North Anatolian Fault (NAF), one of the most prominent plate boundary continental fault systems on Earth, facilitates the westward movement of the Anatolian microplate into the Aegean region. The temporal and spatial evolution of the NAF is important for understanding the mechanism of escape tectonics during plate interaction in active orogenic regions. The driving force(s) behind the movement of the NAF and the time period over which this occurred remain controversial. Our U–Pb and K–Ar dating of syntectonic minerals shows that a predecessor faulting initiated as early as ~40 Ma due to shortening along the Neo-Tethyan suture zone. Fault reactivations occurred at ~20 and 10 Ma synchronously in eastern and western Anatolia, suggesting that the NAF already existed by ~20 Ma. Our data also show that the westward motion of Anatolia was not only controlled by the Arabia–Eurasia collision in eastern Anatolia, but also by Aegean extension.

The present study is designed to investigate the chemical composition and antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory activities of extracts from P. fruticosa, P. herba-venti, and P. kurdica aerial parts. Different classes of metabolites, including phenolic acids, phenylethanoids, flavonoids, iridoids, organic acids, terpenes, and fatty acids, are identified in the three species, with methanol as the best solvent to recover bioactive compounds from the three species in addition to ethyl acetate for P. kurdica. Around 70% methanol extract of P. herba-venti exerts the best radical scavenging and ions-reducing properties, while its methanol extract exhibits the highest acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity. The ethyl acetate extract of P. fruticosa displays the best chelating power, and its other polar extracts have the highest total antioxidant activity. Furthermore, molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations have underscored the therapeutic potential of bioactive compounds, including isoverbascoside, samioside, forsythoside B, and hattushoside. In conclusion, the study indicates that these three Phlomis species are a rich source of bioactive molecules with possible therapeutic applications, and the selection of appropriate extraction solvents is crucial for the targeted biological activity.

A novel Cu-based high-temperature shape memory alloy (HTSMA) with the composition 70.84Cu–23.80Al–4.14Mn–1.22Fe (at. %) was successfully synthesized via arc melting in this study. The effects of thermal aging duration on the alloy’s martensitic transformation behavior, shape memory effect (SME), and microstructural evolution were systematically investigated. Six samples were prepared from the as-cast ingot: one was homogenized in the β-phase region and quenched into ice-brine to induce a martensitic structure, while five others were subsequently aged at 350 ℃ for varying durations and air-cooled. Thermal and structural characterizations were conducted. These included differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and optical microscopy. Prolonged aging altered transformation temperatures and reduced both enthalpy and entropy values. It also promoted the formation of observed precipitates, vacancies, and coarsened 2H martensites. Prolonged aging altered the microstructure and thermal response, leading to partial SME degradation. Additionally, the alloy’s gamma-ray and fast neutron shielding parameters were theoretically estimated using simulation software to explore its potential functional scope. The calculated results indicate that the CuAlMnFe HTSMA is predicted to exhibit favorable attenuation performance across a wide energy spectrum, with appropriate values of mass attenuation coefficient (MAC) and half-value layer (HVL). In particular, the fast neutron removal cross-section was calculated as 0.139 cm−1, which is significantly higher than those of water (0.1023 cm−1), graphite (0.0773 cm−1), and B4C (0.0714 cm−1). In conclusion, the CuAlMnFe HTSMA developed in this study offers a unique profile combining tailorable shape memory behavior with a computationally predicted potential for nuclear radiation shielding. These properties offer novel insights into the alloy’s potential for applications in high-radiation environments that require both mechanical actuation and radiation protection, pending experimental validation of its shielding performance.
