- Derleme MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Automated Detection of Neurological and Mental Health Disorders Using EEG Signals and Artificial Intelligence: A Systematic Review
Uyanik, Hakan; Sengur, Abdulkadir; Salvi, Massimo; Tan, Ru-San; Tan, Jen Hong; Acharya, U. Rajendra
Mental and neurological disorders significantly impact global health. This systematic review examines the use of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to automatically detect these conditions using electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Guided by Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA), we reviewed 74 carefully selected studies published between 2013 and August 2024 that used machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), or both of these two methods to detect neurological and mental health disorders automatically using EEG signals. The most common and most prevalent neurological and mental health disorder types were sourced from major databases, including Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct, PubMed, and IEEE Xplore. Epilepsy, depression, and Alzheimer's disease are the most studied conditions that meet our evaluation criteria, 32, 12, and 10 studies were identified on these topics, respectively. Conversely, the number of studies meeting our criteria regarding stress, schizophrenia, Parkinson's disease, and autism spectrum disorders was relatively more average: 6, 4, 3, and 3, respectively. The diseases that least met our evaluation conditions were one study each of seizure, stroke, anxiety diseases, and one study examining Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy together. Support Vector Machines (SVM) were most widely used in ML methods, while Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) dominated DL approaches. DL methods generally outperformed traditional ML, as they yielded higher performance using huge EEG data. We observed that the complex decision process during feature extraction from EEG signals in ML-based models significantly impacted results, while DL-based models handled this more efficiently. AI-based EEG analysis shows promise for automated detection of neurological and mental health conditions. Future research should focus on multi-disease studies, standardizing datasets, improving model interpretability, and developing clinical decision support systems to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of these disorders.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2Effect of neodymium addition on the structural, mechanical, and magnetic properties of FeCoNiCu(MnCr)0.5 high entropy alloys
Yayla, Nihal; Şimşek, Telem; Boyrazlı, Mustafa; Güler, Ömer
Neodymium (Nd), a rare earth element, was incorporated into the [FeCoNiCu(MnCr)0.5] high-entropy alloy (HEA) at weight percentages of 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 5%. The alloys were synthesized successfully using the arc melting method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed that both the undoped and Nd-doped alloys exhibit a single-phase solid solution with a face-centered cubic (FCC) crystal structure, consistent with thermodynamic predictions derived from the Miedema model. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed a dendritic structure in the undoped alloy, which was replaced by Cu- and Cr-rich regions in the 5% Nd-doped alloy, as confirmed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) indicated an endothermic peak in the undoped alloy and minor thermal responses in Nd-doped samples, without distinct phase transitions within the 0–800 °C range. Mechanical testing demonstrated substantial enhancements in both hardness and tensile strength with increasing Nd content. The 5% Nd-doped alloy exhibited the highest performance, achieving a Vickers hardness of 370 HV and a tensile strength of 1186 MPa. Magnetic testing indicated ferromagnetic behavior in all samples, with Nd additions significantly enhancing magnetic properties. Notably, the 5% Nd-doped alloy achieved a saturation magnetization (Ms) of 41 emu/g and a coercivity (Hc) of 6.3 Oe, highlighting improved magnetic softness and rapid magnetization loss characteristic of soft magnetic materials.

Gürçayır, Dilek; Karabulut, Neziha; Söylemez, Nilgün
Purpose: This study investigates not only the impact of first aid training but also how the Teach-Back method influences teachers’ overall epilepsy knowledge, attitudes toward epilepsy, and self-efficacy in managing epileptic seizures. Methods: A total of 166 preschool teachers who filled out the questionnaire form and gave their consent were included in the study between April and June 2022. A quasiexperimental single-group pre-test post-test design was used in the study, Data were collected using the questionnaire form, Epilepsy Knowledge Scale, Childhood Epilepsy Attitude Scale and General Self-Efficacy Scale. The research data were collected by the researchers through face-to-face interviews. Results: It was determined that the rate of correct answers given by preschool teachers to most questions about first aid practices in epileptic seizures increased significantly after the training (p < 0.05). There was a significant improvement in preschool teachers’ first aid practices at the end of the training compared to before the training. The mean score of the Epilepsy Knowledge Scale before the training was 11.16 ± 4.04, after the training was 14.59 ± 2.08, and the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001). The mean Childhood Epilepsy Attitude Scale score before the training was 47.90 ± 4.02, after the training was 51.53 ± 4.55, and the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Epilepsy education significantly improved teachers’ knowledge and attitudes towards childhood epilepsy. However, the increase in general self-efficacy remained limited. This situation reveals the necessity of practical and long-term programs in addition to theoretical education.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2Synthesis, microstructural refinement, and shielding optimization of Gd2O3-reinforced AISI 316L stainless steel: a multi-dimensional integration assessment for targeted protection applications
Yayla, Nihal; Albayrak, M Gökhan; Güler, Ömer; Sen Baykal, Duygu; Alkarrani, Hessa; ALMisned, Ghada; Issa, Bashar; Tekin, H.O.
This study investigates the multi-dimensional effects of increasing Gd2O3 reinforcement on the structural, mechanical, and gamma-ray shielding properties of AISI 316L stainless steel composites. Samples with varying Gd2O3 content (1%, 5%, 10%, and 20% by weight) were synthesized and characterized through x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) to assess the microstructural changes and homogeneity of Gd2O3 dispersion after mechanical milling. The addition of Gd2O3 significantly enhanced the gamma-ray shielding properties, with the mass attenuation coefficient (MAC), linear attenuation coefficient (LAC), and half-value layer (HVL) improving as the Gd2O3 content increased, particularly in low to moderate photon energy ranges. Simultaneously, the elastic modulus exhibited an inverse relationship, decreasing with higher Gd2O3 content due to the lower stiffness of gadolinium compared to iron. Transmission factor (TF) values also decreased, indicating enhanced photon attenuation with higher Gd2O3 content across various thicknesses. The experimental characterization confirmed improved Gd2O3 dispersion and material uniformity after mechanical milling, contributing to the composites’ superior radiation shielding performance. It can be concluded that Gd2O3-reinforced AISI 316L stainless steel composites offer a promising balance between enhanced radiation shielding properties and reduced mechanical stiffness, making them ideal candidates for applications requiring efficient and adaptable radiation protection especially for portable and non-structural shielding applications.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Effect of Ferula sp. on sperm cryotolerance, quality, and fatty acid composition in common carp (Cyprinus carpio)
Ölçülü, Abdullatif; Özçiçek, Esin; Kutluyer Kocabaş, Filiz; Kızak, Volkan; Kocabaş, Mehmet; Yılmaz, Ökkeş
Ferula sp. is a perennial herbaceous plant and is used in traditional medicine owing to their antimicrobial, antiviral, aphrodisiac and spermatogenic activities in the world. Hence, Ferula sp. was used in the present study for cryopreservation protocol as a herbal supplement. The impact of different concentrations [0 mM (Control), 30 µg L−1, 60 µg L−1, 90 µg L−1] of Ferula sp. extract on the quality and fatty acid (FAs) composition was assessed in fresh and cryopreserved sperm of Cyprinus carpio. Optimal supplementation of Ferula sp. at a concentration of 60 µg L−1 in the freezing extender significantly improved post-thawed sperm quality of C. carpio. Sperm motility parameters were assessed using the sperm class analyzer system. The fatty acid (FAs) content in sperm was analyzed using gas chromatography. The results revealed that the increases in motility rate (80.0 ± 3.54%) at 60 µg L−1 were increased significantly (p < 0.05). Significant differences in sperm parameters [(VCL: curvilinear velocity, VSL: straight line velocity, VAP: average path velocity, and BCF: beat cross frequency)] were observed between the different treatments (p < 0.05). The Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) showed a slight increase in comparison to fresh spermatozoa during cryopreservation. DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid), LA (Linoleic acid) and ARA (Arachidonic acid) were identified as the major PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acid) in the sperm plasma membrane, and however the total PUFAs reduced all treated compared to fresh sperm samples after post-thawing. Overall, the supplementation with Ferula sp. to extender at a concentration of 60 µg L−1 positively influenced the motility parameters and FAs levels during cryopreservation and, Ferula sp. may act as a promising protective substance for the conservation of valuable fish genetic resources.

Neuropeptides are diverse neuronal signaling molecules that regulate cellular and physiological functions. Phoenixin (PNX) and Nucleobindin 2 (NUCB2)/nesfatin-1, which are known to co-localize and interact in some hypothalamic nuclei such as arcuate nucleus (ARC) and paraventricular nucleus (PVN), have important pleiotropic roles. The aim of this study was to investigate the immunohistochemical distribution of these neuropeptides in biological tissues of adult female and male rats. For this purpose, a total of 12 Spraque-Dawley rats, 6 female and 6 male, aged 3–4 months, were sacrificed and hypothalamus, pituitary, brain, cerebellum, adrenal gland, ovary and testis tissues were taken. Serum gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), plasma PNX-14, and NUCB2/nesfatin-1 concentrations showed no statistically differences between sexes. PNX-14 immunoreactivity was more prominent in the ARC of male rats, whereas NUCB2/nesfatin-1 immunoreactivity was markedly higher in the PVN of females. In the anterior pituitary, PNX-14 and NUCB2/nesfatin-1 staining was more intense in females relative to males. PNX-14 immunoreactivity in the brain was quite high in female and male rats, and this immunoreactivity in the cerebellum was low in both sexes. NUCB2/nesfatin-1 exhibited moderate immunoreactivity in these organs in both sexes. In the adrenal cortex of both sexes, PNX-14 immunoreactivity was quite intense, while NUCB2/nesfatin-1 was a moderate intensity. PNX-14 immunoreactivity was more intense in the ovary, whereas NUCB2/nesfatin-1 immunoreactivity was more prominent in the testis. In conclusion, we demonstrated the immunohistochemical localization of PNX-14 and NUCB2/nesfatin-1 neuropeptides, in conjunction with serum GnRH levels, in organs associated with the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axes of adult male and female rats.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ4A Classification of N(κ)-contact Metric Manifolds with T-curvature Tensor
Ünal, İnan; Altın, Mustafa; Pandey, Shashikant
In this study, we consider various geometric conditions associated with the vanishing of a generalized curvature tensor, namely the T-tensor, on N(κ)-contact metric manifolds. We define and analyze several types of T-flatness conditions, including T-flat, ξ-T-flat, quasi-T-flat, and φ-T-flat structures. By applying these flatness conditions, we obtain algebraic constraints on the curvature parameters, particularly involving the Ricci tensor. The resulting characterizations allow for the classification of N(κ)-contact metric manifolds as either Einstein or η-Einstein, depending on the specific values of the structure constants. These investigations also lead to deeper insights into the geometric structure and local isometry types of the manifolds under study.

ALMisned, Ghada; Yayla, Nihal; Albayrak, M.Gökhan; Güler, Ömer; Baykal, Duygu Sen; Alkarrani, Hessa; Tekin, H.O.
Four composite samples were fabricated, maintaining 10 % B4C and varying La2O3 content from 0 % to 20 %. X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX) analyses confirmed the successful incorporation of reinforcements, preserving the austenitic structure of 316L-SS. Elastic modulus calculations revealed a gradual reduction from 225.0 GPa to 215.0 GPa with increasing La2O3 due to clustering and reduced homogeneity. Gamma-ray shielding properties demonstrated significant improvements, particularly at low and intermediate photon energies, with Sample 4 with 20 % La2O3 addition, achieving a 13.6 % higher linear attenuation coefficients (LAC) at 0.015 MeV. Neutron shielding highlighted Sample 4 as one of the most effective materials, outperforming conventional alloys. This study demonstrates the potential of 316L Stainless-Steel (316L-SS) + B4C + La2O3 composites as multifunctional materials for radiation-intensive applications, offering superior attenuation and structural stability. It can be concluded that optimization of reinforcement distribution would play an important role in balancing mechanical and shielding performance in next-generation nuclear materials.

ALMisned, Ghada; Susoy, Gulfem; Baykal, Duygu Sen; Kilic, G.; Güler, Ömer; Tekin, H.O.
This comprehensive study investigates the radiation attenuation properties of various bismuth (Bi) and lead (Pb) based alloys, with a focus on identifying superior shielding materials for nuclear safety and industrial radiation protection. The research encompasses an in-depth analysis of seven alloys, namely GTSB5, Sn%40Bi, Bi50Sn50, A1, PbAl-4, Safe Alloy, and P1, assessing their efficacy in gamma-ray and neutron attenuation. Utilizing some computational tools, various parameters such as mass and linear attenuation coefficients, half and tenth value layer values, effective atomic and electron numbers, buildup factors, and transmission values were evaluated. Our findings highlight Alloy P1's outstanding performance, attributed to its high density (11.05 g/cm3) and optimized elemental composition, including Silver (Ag). In addition, P1 demonstrates exceptional gamma-ray attenuation across multiple energy spectra and superior neutron shielding capabilities, evidenced by its significant fast neutron removal cross-section (∑R, 0.12003 1/cm). The study revealed that the addition of Ag enhances the photon and beta particle absorption capacity, positioning P1 as a promising material in radiation shielding applications. The correlations between alloy density and gamma-ray shielding properties were particularly notable, with P1's density contributing to its enhanced attenuation capabilities. Furthermore, P1's lower half value layers (1.14469 cm) and tenth value layers (3.80256 cm) at 15 MeV indicate its efficiency in reducing radiation intensity with minimal material thickness.

Pollutants such as copper nanoparticles (CuNP), which form residues in the environment, especially in water environments, cause serious damage to the environment and the organisms living in the environment. In this study, Navicula cryptocephala var. veneta was selected as a model organism. The EC50 values of CuNP on Navicula cryptocephala var. veneta were determined as 4.94 mg\L and 3 different application concentrations were determined considering this ratio. The experiments were carried out in 3 replicates and samples were taken at 24 and 96 hours. At the end of 120 hours, samples were taken to determine the elimination values. CuNP accumulation amounts in the samples were measured by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrophotometer (ETAAS). For biomarker analysis, thiobarbituric acid (TBARS) and glutathione (GSH) levels and superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities were performed using CAYMAN ELISA kit. According to the study data, as CuNP concentration and application time increased, the amount of accumulation in Navicula cryptocephala also increased. Increasing-decreasing changes were observed in elimination. CuNP caused oxidative stress in N. cryptocephala and caused changes in TBARS and GSH levels. In addition, it caused increases in SOD activities and statistically significant decreases (P<0.05) in CAT and GPx activities.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ2The effect of WC addition on CrMnFeCoNi high entropy alloys: crystal-micro structure, hardness and wear behavior
Taşgın, Yahya; Kanca, M Sait; Kök, Mediha; Anik, Kerem
High entropy alloys are produced by combining four or more elements in close percentage ratios. Recently, these alloys have become the preferred group due to their superior mechanical and thermal properties. In this study, tungsten carbide (WC) was doped into CrMnFeCoNi alloys at different ratios, and the effects of WC and heat treatment on the doped alloys were investigated. XRD, SEM, and EDS analyses, wear tests, and microhardness measurements were performed on the produced samples to examine their microstructural properties. When comparing the heat-treated samples with WC (3%, 5%, and 10% additions) to the untreated samples, it was found that the average hardness values of the heat-treated samples were higher. Although the grain structures of the samples, as observed through XRD, SEM, and EDS, were preserved, their ratios were altered, and the wear tests revealed that the mass losses of the heat-treated samples increased.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Modeling water infiltration into soil under fractional wettability conditions
Di Prima, Simone; Stewart, Ryan D.; Abou Najm, Majdi R.; Yilmaz, Deniz; Comegna, Alessandro; Lassabatere, Laurent
The heterogeneous distribution of water-repellent materials at the soil surface causes a phenomenon known as fractional wettability. This condition frequently triggers destabilization of the wetting front during water infiltration, resulting in the formation of fingered bypass flow. However, few analytical tools exist to understand and model this behavior. Moreover, existing infiltration models fail to fit certain infiltration curves that exist in experimental data. For these reasons, we introduce a novel infiltration model to simulate water infiltration under fractional wettable conditions. We conceptualize the soil surface as a composite of two distinct portions: a water-repellent fraction, where hydrophobic effects impede water infiltration, and a wettable fraction, where capillarity and gravity are the dominant forces controlling the process. The new model was validated using a dataset comprising infiltration data from 60 field measurements. Additionally, validation was performed using 660 analytically generated infiltration curves from six synthetic soils with varying textures. This innovative approach enabled us to account for the combined influence of these two fractions and to enhance the interpretation of infiltration curves with mixed shapes, which other common methods are unable to reproduce.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ1Effect of Ohmic Heating on the Quality and Nutrient Preservation of Plum Marmalade: A Comparison With Conventional Heating
Ekici, Seymanur; Omac, Basri; Sabanci, Serdal
In this study, plum marmalade was prepared using the ohmic heating method at three distinct voltage gradients (30, 35, and 40 V/cm). The quality properties of the marmalade prepared this way were contrasted with those prepared using the conventional heating method. Total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant activity (AA), vitamin C content, total color change (ΔE), hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and the amount of time needed for the process, including heating and evaporation, were all measured as part of the study. According to the findings, ohmic heating—specifically, a voltage gradient of 40 V/cm—significantly reduced the heating time when compared to the traditional method, which raised the stability of vitamin C, AA, and phenolic compounds. When ohmic heating was used instead of conventional heating, the amounts of TPC, AA, and vitamin C increased by 19.50%, 33.90%, and 149.12%, respectively. In comparison to traditional heating under atmospheric conditions, the results also showed that ohmic heating increased the amounts of gallic acid (40.61%), catechin (40.98%), chlorogenic acid (25.05%), and rutin (24.67%). Furthermore, the results showed that ohmic heating reduced the amount of HMF (34.34%) and ΔE (2.27%) in comparison to conventional heating. TPC, AA, vitamin C, gallic acid, catechin, chlorogenic acid, and rutin were higher than conventional heating; nevertheless, HMF and ΔE were lower than conventional heating at the applied ohmic heating process. The use of solar energy in the treatment of saline water offers a sustainable and low-cost solution to the increasing global fresh water demand. In this direction, solar still systems separate water vapor from saline water by directly using solar radiation and then condense it to obtain pure water. However, their fresh water productivity is relatively low. Therefore, in this study, the fresh water productivity and thermal efficiency of the double slope solar distillation unit integrated with parabolic trough solar collector, which operates completely on solar energy, were investigated experimentally. In addition, the effect of water-based nanofluid containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes on the performance of the solar still was investigated. All the stills produced were compared in terms of fresh water productivity and thermal efficiency. According to the results obtained from the study, the highest daily productivity was found to be 1963.8 g/m2/day, 2008.5 g/m2/day, 2592.0 g/m2/day and 2937.6 g/m2/day for SSSS, DSSS, PTSC integrated DSSS and both NF and PTSC integrated DSSS, respectively. It was observed that the daily productivity of DSSS, DSSS with integrated PTSC, and DSSS with both PTSC and NF were 6.6 %, 42.2 %, and 49.6 % higher than SSSS, respectively. Additionally, it was observed that the thermal efficiency of DSSS using PTSC and NF was lower compared to SSSS due to its larger system area.

Copper (Cu) is widely used in electrical, electronic, and tribological systems owing to its excellent electrical and thermal conductivity. However, its relatively low hardness and poor wear resistance limit its use in demanding engineering applications. In this study, Cu-based hybrid metal matrix composites (MMCs) reinforced with hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and boron carbide (B4C) were fabricated via spark plasma sintering (SPS) to improve their mechanical and tribological performance. The h-BN content was fixed at 1 wt.% to ensure solid lubrication, while the B4C content was varied (0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1 wt.%) to examine its influence on the microstructural, mechanical, electrical, and wear properties of the composites. Microstructural analyses confirmed a homogeneous distribution of h-BN and B4C particles in the Cu matrix at low and moderate reinforcement levels, whereas excessive B4C resulted in partial agglomeration and reduced densification. All composites achieved relative densities above 95%, demonstrating the high densification efficiency of the SPS process. Hardness increased markedly with B4C addition due to dispersion strengthening and grain refinement, while electrical conductivity decreased slightly because of the insulating nature of the reinforcements. Tribological tests showed that the composite containing 0.75 wt.% B4C exhibited the best performance, with the lowest wear rate and stable friction behavior. Overall, the results indicate that co-reinforcing Cu with h-BN and B4C through SPS is a promising strategy for developing multifunctional materials suitable for electrical contact and sliding applications.
