Coskun, Musab; Ucar, Aysegul; Yildirim, Ozal; Demir, Yakup

Face recognition is of great importance to real world applications such as video surveillance, human machine interaction and security systems. As compared to traditional machine learning approaches, deep learning based methods have shown better performances in terms of accuracy and speed of processing in image recognition. This paper proposes a modified Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture by adding two normalization operations to two of the layers. The normalization operation which is batch normalization provided acceleration of the network. CNN architecture was employed to extract distinctive face features and Softmax classifier was used to classify faces in the fully connected layer of CNN. In the experiment part, Georgia Tech Database showed that the proposed approach has improved the face recognition performance with better recognition results.

Optimization of an Analytical Method for Determination of Pyrene in Smoked Meat Products

Ince, Muharrem; Kaplan Ince, Olcay; Yaman, Mehmet

In the present study, an analytical method was optimized for determination of pyrene by solid-phase extraction in Turkish foodstuffs including chicken and grilled meat samples. In accordance with this purpose, all of the parameters that may affect the signal of pyrene during analysis processes were optimized using high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry system. The optimized parameters for column temperature, injection volume, mobile-phase flow rate, and fragmentor potential were found to be 45 °C, 60 μL, 0.6 mL min−1, and 130 V, respectively. The optimized high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry method was applied for the determination and evaluation of pyrene in food samples that include chicken and grilled meat. The pyrene amount in meat samples was obtained in the range from 2.3 to 4.4 μg kg−1 for the normal grilled meat and chicken samples and from 12 to 135 μg kg−1 for exceedingly grilled samples. The results show that the concentration of pyrene is significantly dependent on the type of meat sample and cooking source. The limit of detection and quantitation was found to be 0.5 μg L−1 and 1.53 μg L−1, respectively.

Baskonus, Haci Mehmet; Sulaiman, Tukur Abdulkadir; Bulut, Hasan

In this paper, we seek for the new soliton solutions to the coupled nonlinear Maccari's system by using sine-Gordon expansion method. Sine-Gordon expansion method is based on sine-Gordon Eq. (2.1) and a travelling wave transformation. We obtain new complex hyperbolic functions solutions to this system with help of Wolfram Mathematica 9, we also plot 3-dimensional and 2-dimensional graphics to some obtained solution using the same program in Wolfram Mathematica 9. Finally, we submit a comprehensive conclusions.

Whole rock geochemistry, Zircon U–Pb and Hf isotope systematics of the Çangaldağ Pluton: Evidences for Middle Jurassic Continental Arc Magmatism in the Central Pontides, Turkey

Çimen, Okay; Göncüoğlu, M. Cemal; Simonetti, Antonio; Sayit, Kaan

The Central Pontides (Turkey) includes several igneous complexes, which are predominantly Permo-Carboniferous and Middle Jurassic in age. The Çangaldağ Pluton is one of the largest igneous bodies located in the northern Central Pontides, whose age and tectono-magmatic evaluation is important to constrain the geological evolution of the Northern Neotethys. The pluton tectonically overlies the Çangaldağ Metamorphic Complex, which represents an arc–back-arc complex of Middle Jurassic age. The Çangaldağ Pluton consists mainly of non-metamorphic gabbroic diorite, dacite porphyry, and lesser amount of granitic rocks. Geochemically, the various rock types are akin to volcanic arc magmas displaying Th/Nb and light rare earth element/heavy rare earth element enrichments. In-situ U–Pb age results of zircons from dacite porphyry and granite samples yield ages of 161 ± 5 Ma and 170 ± 2 Ma, respectively. Corresponding in-situ average 176Hf/177Hf initial ratios are 0.28287 ± 0.00004 and 0.28213 ± 0.00002 for the dacite porphyry and granite samples, respectively. These results are consistent with derivation from a subduction-modified mantle source. Based on Hf isotope compositions, TDM model ages vary between 624 and 1512 Ma and suggest that the arc magmatism associated with the Çangaldağ Pluton may have involved partial melting of Neoproterozoic/Mesoproterozoic crustal rocks, a common feature in Gondwana-derived terranes. The geochemical, Hf isotope, and geochronological data reported here confirm the presence of a continental arc system during the Middle Jurassic in the Central Pontides, and suggests that the Çangaldağ Pluton formed during northward subduction of the Intra-Pontide branch of the Northern Neotethys.

Effects of role-playing scenarios on the self-efficacy of students in resisting against substance addiction: A pilot study

    Karatay, Gülnaz; Baş, Nazan Gürarslan

During the first phases of adolescent development, young people have little self-efficacy and resistance against substance use. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the effectiveness of role-playing scenarios on the self-efficacy of students in resisting substance use. A pre test and post test study design was used with a single group. The study was carried out with 245 secondary school students. The scenario-based training, developed by the researchers, was presented by the school counselors once a week for 4 weeks. For this purpose, a booklet of scenarios was prepared for the teachers. The role-playing scenarios were intended to improve adolescents’ abilities to say "no" to substance offers, to prevent them from becoming addicted to certain substances, and to call for help if needed. The data of the study were collected using the Personal Information Form and the Self-Efficacy for Adolescences Protecting Substance Abuse Scale. The obtained data were assessed using percentages, chi-square, t test, and F test in the SPSS software. Results showed that, after the training, the mean score in the Self-Efficacy for Adolescences Protecting Substance Abuse Scale increased significantly (103.20 ± 20.00) compared with before the training (92.11 ± 17.08) (P <.05). Short-term outcomes of the class-based scenario training were observed to be effective in the development of students’ self-efficacy to resist the temptations of substance use.

Calibration-free extraction of constitutive parameters of magnetically coupled anisotropic metamaterials using waveguide measurements

    Hasar, U.C.; Buldu, G.; Bute, M.; Muratoglu, A.

A calibration-free method for extraction of electromagnetic properties of magnetically coupled anisotropic biaxial metamaterial (MM) slabs from waveguide measurements is proposed. It relies on three measurement steps (thru, empty line, and the same line arbitrarily loaded by the MM slab) to extract electromagnetic properties. It is evaluated against another calibration-dependent method for retrieval of electromagnetic properties of a MM slab constructed by C-shaped resonators. From evaluation analysis, we note that our method, as compared to the calibration-dependent method, not only accurately extracts electromagnetic properties without requiring the use of expensive calibration standards but also is reference-invariant.

Antioxidant Response in Duckweed After Exposure to Secondary Effluent from Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant, Elazığ, Turkey

Tatar, Sule Yuksel; Obek, Erdal; Cikcikoglu Yildirim, Nuran

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of the effluent of Elazig Municipality Wastewater Treatment Plant on the oxidative defense capacity of aquatic plants (Lemna minor L. and Lemna gibba L.). For this purpose, malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), oxidized glutathione (GSSG), vitamin A (retinol), vitamin E (α-tocopherol), and vitamin C (Ascorbic acid) levels were determined by the HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography) in the control groups and the groups adapting to reactors fed with discharge water. The depletion of vitamins (A, E, and C), decrease of GSH/GSSG ratio, and increase of MDA that reflect a precarious state of the cell in L. minor L. and L. gibba L. were observed after exposure to wastewater. It can be suggested that the selected biomarkers are useful in understanding the biochemical mechanisms of the secondary effluents from wastewater treatment plant in L. minor L. and L. gibba L. as early warning indicators.

    Erecevit, Pınar; Kırbağ, Sevda

Objective: In this work; phytochemical parameters (fatty acid, vitamin, phytosterol, flavonoid and resveratrol contents, and antioxidant activities antimicrobial activities) of Pisum sativum (pease) extracts prepared with Debaryomyces hansenii were detected. P. sativum (pease) is known as one of the nutritional sources of prebiotics. Methods: Phytochemical contents of extracts were evaluated with device and assays like Shimadzu 17, Shimadzu brand HPLC, Spectrophotometer device and well agar methods respectively. Results: it was observed that total fatty acid, flavonoid, contents in pease extracts were at low levels and vitamin, and phytosterol contents were at changing. It was detected that total fatty acid, vitamin and phytosterol contents; at significant rates of pease extracts prepared with D. hansenii; however, flavonoid contents decreased at different rates. In the work, it was noticed that pease had increasingly antioxidant activities and antimicrobial activities at changing rates, acordingly at fatty acid, vitamin and phytosterol levels; at significant rates increased. On the other hand, flavonoid extracts demonstrated scarcely any antimicrobial activity. When antimicrobial activities of pease extracts containing D. hansenii were analyzed, they had effect at increasing rates of fatty acid, vitamin and phytosterol. On the other hand, it was demonstrated that flavonoid extracts did not have any antimicrobial activity against all of the microorganisms except Bacillus megaterium DSM 32. Conclusion: it was detected that pease which is known as prebiotic food, can be used in terms of proper prebiotic and the relationship of proper prebiotic-prebiotic (symbiotic) for the development of D. hansenii used in this study which is also accepted as probiotic yeast. It was observed that this yeast type developing in extracts obtained from pease affected other beneficial nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, phenolic compounds at varying rates.

The ability of Phanerochaete chrysosporium (ME446) on chemical oxygen demand remediation in submerged culture medium supplemented with malathion insecticide

Erguven, Gokhan Onder; Yildirim, Numan; Adar, Elanur

This present study aims to evaluating the efficiency of P. chrysosporium (P.c) to degrade the different concentrations of malathion (MLT) (50, 100 and 150 ppm) under agitated (130 rpm) submerged culture conditions via reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD). We have previously screening the growth of fungus in sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) medium for 6 days. We have also determined the laccase activity during degradation process for 15 days. According to our results the fungus has achieved 99.6, 98.8 and 98.7 % COD reduction at concentration of 50, 100 and 150 ppm respectively the end of the 15 days. The highest laccase activity (180 ± 5.69 U/L) was measured at concentration of 50 ppm the end of the 15 days and the lowest activity (36 ± 3.26) was determined at concentration of 150 ppm the end of the 15 days. The dried biomass of fungus was weighted at end of the 15 days and we have determined that malathion in culture medium reduced the biomass production compared the control group (SDB + P.c). Our results showed that, P. chrysosporium could be an effective bioremediation tool for treatment of malathion containing wastewater.

    Julius Caesar: Tyrannicide made unpopular

    Öǧütcü, Murat

The late Elizabethan Period was marked by socio-economic discontent. Amid this, Shakespeare's Julius Caesar (1599) featured a prominent debate: whether or not tyrannicide could solve problems. Around 1599, Essex formulated a like-minded political revolution only to dismiss it until 1601. Yet, as providentialist and republican debates failed to provide solutions against misgovernment, the 1601 Essex rebellion also proved abortive. Essex was considered another regicide Brutus rather than a saviour. Contrary to the majority of apolitical or ahistorical critical analyses about tyranny in the play, a historicized analysis of Julius Caesar, therefore, illustrates how tyrannicide might have been perceived by Elizabethan playgoers.

Fault location determination for transmission lines with different series-compensation levels using transient frequencies

Akmaz, Duzgun; Mamiş, Mehmet Salih; Arkan, Muslum; Tagluk, Mehmet Emin

In this paper, based on the theory of traveling waves, the fault distances on long transmission lines with various series-compensation levels are determined using transient current and voltage frequencies. Transmission lines with series compensation are modeled using Alternative Transients Program software with frequency-dependent effects on the line included in the simulation. The transient current and voltage signals are obtained from the model. A fast Fourier transform is used for frequency-domain conversion and fault location is estimated from the frequencies of fault-generated harmonics in the transient spectrum. The algorithm is implemented in MATLAB. To investigate the effect of compensation on accuracy, the results are obtained for different series-compensation levels. The undesirable source-inductance effect is removed and estimation accuracy is further improved using a waveform-relaxation method. The method is found to be successful in determining fault location on series-compensated transmission lines. The effects of the compensation level, fault resistance, and phase angle are investigated.

Rapid malachite green removal from aqueous solution by natural zeolite: Process optimization by response surface methodology

    Tanyol, Mehtap

In this study, malachite green removal from aqueous solutions by natural zeolite was investigated. The interaction between zeolite and malachite green was determined by SEM/EDX and FTIR. The parameters like adsorbent dosage (0.1–1 mg/100 mL), initial malachite green concentration (40–200 mg/L) and the contact time (10–600 s) were optimized using the central composite design of response surface methodology. Maximum removal yield (99.70%) was obtained at an adsorbent dosage of 0.68 mg/100 mL, an initial malachite green concentration of 79.02 mg/L, and at 414 s contact time. The equilibrium process complied better with the Langmuir isotherm model, which exhibits a single layer adsorption, when compared with the Freundlich isotherm model. Adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order type kinetic and intra-particle diffusion played an important role onto adsorption mechanism of malachite green. The findings of this study demonstrated that zeolite which is found abundant on earth as a cheap and efficient adsorbent could be used for rapid malachite green adsorption from aqueous solutions.

A hybrid risk-based approach for maritime applications: The case of ballast tank maintenance

Gul, Muhammet; Celik, Erkan; Akyuz, Emre

Risk assessment is vital for cost-effective ship management in maritime industry since numerous maritime activities pose potential hazards according to the human causalities. Therefore, safety practitioners attempt to offer proactive approaches to mitigate risk as much as possible. In this context, this article presents a hybrid risk-based approach for maritime industry by adopting Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) with fuzzy VIKOR (FVIKOR) methods under Fine-Kinney approach. To illustrate the hybrid risk-based approach, ballast tank maintenance process is handled since there are various hazards causing fatalities, severe injuries, and illness during ballast tank maintenance procedure than any other type of shipboard work. An extensive risk analysis is performed to enhance environment safety and operational reliability in maritime industry. Besides its theoretical contribution, the outcomes of the paper contribute to improve overall safety level of ship by considering potential hazards in risk management.

Interdisciplinary research has revolutionized the field of medicine and we have witnessed exponential increase in the high-impact research in past few decades. However, the road to this burgeoning research field is obstacle-ridden because of intratumor heterogeneity, loss of apoptosis and dysregulation of spatio-temporally controlled signaling pathways. Ground-breaking findings obtained through genetic, genomic and proteomic studies have considerably improved our concepts related to the complexity of protein network and excitingly, discovery of miRNAs has added another layer of intricacy to quantitatively regulated gene networks. In this review, we chronicle the milestone achievements and discuss how Pterostilbenes effectively regulated different cellular pathways. We have provided detailed mechanistic insights related to regulation of JAK-STAT signaling, Notch pathway, Wnt mediated intracellular signaling by pterostilbene. Underlying mechanisms about regulation of PI3K/AKT and MAPK pathways by pterostilbene in different cancers. Regulation of Metastasis-associated protein 1 (MTA1) proteins and Human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) in cancer cells by pterostilbene. Pterostilbene has also been reported to modulate the expression of various oncogenic and tumor suppressor microRNAs in cancer cells. Better and sharper comprehension of the concepts associated with the modes of action of pterostilbene in different cancers will be useful in identification of cancers which can be efficiently targeted by pterostilbene.
