- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ3A MCDM Based on Goal Programming and GIS-Based Risk Assessment for the Evaluation of Educational Locations in Conflict Areas
Hallak, Jamil; Polat, Elifcan Göçmen
Conflict is recognized as a major barrier in socio-economic development. In conflict situations, most sectors such as health, food, shelter and education are adversely affected. The provision of education services to conflict-affected children saves them from becoming a lost generation and contributes to community building. Thus, we conducted this research to investigate the potential of a GIS (Geographic Information Systems) approach and risk assessment based multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) for the allocation of displaced dropped-out children to the most appropriate educational centres, taking into account multiple goals related to cost, distance, risk, etc. A two-stage approach was adopted, utilizing a risk assessment approach, and a location-allocation approach. The risk assessment approach was carried out using GIS and F-AHP (Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process) to determine the risk value of each candidate educational centre in the conflict area. In the location-allocation stage, a mathematical model was developed to allocate all demands to the chosen centres. All presented methods were computationally conducted on real case data provided by direct beneficiaries and stakeholders in the 26 sub-districts in the Idleb governorate, Syria. The computational results demonstrate that the proposed approaches ensure practical and theoretical impacts.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ2Fabrication of porous-Ti6Al4V alloy by using hot pressing technique and Mg space holder for hard-tissue biomedical applications
Aslan, N.; Aksakal, B.; Findik, F.
Porous-Ti6Al4V (P-Ti6Al4V) alloys were produced using the hot pressing and spacer methods for hard tissue biomedical applications and in particular, the effects of porosity on the mechanical and morphological properties of the structures were investigated. P-Ti6Al4V structures having the homogeneously distributed porosities at 41.08, 52.37 and 64.10% were fabricated by adding 40, 50 and 60% spherical magnesium (Mg) powder with 350 μm particle sizes in average as spacers and evaporating magnesium via the atmosphere-controlled sintering. The obtained porous structures were characterized by SEM, XRD and EDS. Furthermore, the strength and elastic modulus were evaluated by performing compression tests. Elastic modulus and densities were found to be 40–171 MPa, 2–5 GPa and 1.59–2.61, respectively and these values have been shown to decrease with an increase in porosity. The achieved density and mechanical property values, in particular, elastic modulus are close to human bone and within acceptable ranges for with biomedical application purposes. In addition, it was also found out from the analysis of produced P-Ti6Al4V that macropores were responsible for mechanical anisotropy contributed to formation of homogeneous and inter-connected open pores. - MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ3Investigation of the effect of baffle cut on heat transfer and pressure drop in shell-and-tube heat exchangers using CFD
Işık, Erdem; Tuğan, Volkan
The shell-and-tube heat exchanger (STHE) is one of the most widely used types of heat exchangers in industry. For this reason, studies conducted to improve the performance of STHEs are of great importance. In this study, a single-shell- and double-tube-pass STHE was designed, and a three-dimensional and steady-state flow analysis of this heat exchanger was conducted using the CFD method. The purpose of the analysis was to investigate the effect of baffle cut and mass flow rate of the fluid on the shell side on heat transfer and pressure drop by using the ANSYS Fluent, which is a type of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. For this aim, oil and water are used as working fluids in the shell and tubes of the STHE, respectively. Four different mass flow rates (0.6 kg/s, 0.8 kg/s, 1.0 kg/s, and 1.2 kg/s) are used for the fluid in the shell. In the analysis, three different STHEs with baffle cuts of 20%, 30%, and 40% are compared. According to the results of the CFD analysis, baffle cut plays an important role in heat transfer and pressure drop. The highest heat transfer per pressure drop was achieved for the STHE with 40% baffle cut and the lowest was achieved for the STHE with 20% baffle cut.

Objective: Neospora caninum is a protozoon parasite that has a worldwide distribution and mainly causes abortion in cattle and current serological evidence shows that the disease may be also zoonotic. Wild birds play a role as a reservoir of the disease in nature. The study aimed to determine the prensence of N. caninum in wild birds. Methods: In this study, the presence of neosporosis in wild birds (n=55) including 22 different species found in the western side of Turkey, was investigated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In addition, PCR positive samples were confirmed by sequencing, BLAST, and phylogenetic analysis using MEGA7. Results: Obtained results showed that the presence of N. caninum DNA was 5.45% (3/55) in brain-heart homogenates wild birds. The bird species which were found positive for N. caninum were little owl (Athene noctua), common buzzard (Buteo buteo), and little tern (Sternula albifrons). According to phylogenetic analysis and BLAST, all samples were compatible with reference N. caninum isolates. Conclusion: To the best of authors’ knowledge, this is the first study detecting N. caninum in little tern. In future studies, it may be interesting to investigate the prevalence of N. caninum in other wild animals to elucidate the transmission properties.

Symphytum species, commonly known as comfrey, hold a long history of folk medicinal uses for healing wounds, bone fractures and other pain resulting from inflammation. However, many species belonging to this genus have not yet been scientifically investigated and hence investigation in this regard is warranted. In the present research, S. aintabicum extracts prepared by different extraction techniques (homogenizer assisted extraction, infusion and maceration) were assayed for their chemosystematic attributes (total phenolic, flavonoid) as well as bioactive compound contents, antioxidant and enzyme inhibition potentials. For instance, the extracts were found to possess phenolic and flavonoid levels ranging from 35.50 to 112.25 mg GAE/g and 2.54–25.12 mg RE/g, respectively. In general, the extracts displayed significant antioxidant activity. However, methanolic and infusion extracts were observed as the most potent radical scavengers and reducing agents, most likely related to their phenolic content. The extracts also showed metal chelating power and total antioxidant capacity in phosphomolybdenum assay. Moreover, while all extracts showed inhibition on amylase, only the methanolic extracts acted as inhibitors of cholinesterases and tyrosinase, most probably due to their relatively higher flavonoid content. The findings also indicated that the extraction method as well as the solvent type used to more or less affect the yield of the bioactive compounds and extracts’ bioactivity reported herein. Hence, as a first report highlighting the in vitro pharmacological properties of S. aintabicum, promising results were revealed from the quantitative chemosystematic analysis of bioactive components present and as sources of antioxidants and enzyme inhibitors against key human illnesses, thus providing scope for potential applications in phytomedicine development.

Pure and three types of carbon additives including graphite, graphene, and multi-walled carbon nanotube added into polypropylene (PP) composites as a vibration damping component and sound insulator material in the automotive sector were investigated by using vibrational damping, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), tensile, hardness and acoustic behavior tests. According to the obtained results, porosity and distribution of carbon in the polymer matrix are key parameters on the composite parameters causing its reduction of tensile strength and its brittle behavior. Moreover, it seems that 0.01 wt.% graphene and 1 wt.% graphite added PP composites show the highest impact damping properties and also increase the storage and loss modulus of the composite while decreasing the glass transition temperature. The loss factor obtained from DMA and vibration damping test indicated the damping capacity in the interphase of carbon added PP composites depends only on the load applied and not sensitivity upon the natural frequency of the composite system. Depending on the morphological differentiation, graphene added PP composites decrease the sound transmission loss while the 0.1 wt.% MWCNT added PP composites increase sound transmission loss which makes it an alternative vibration damping component.

Polat, Erkan; Kenarangi, Hadi; Bruneau, Michel
Tie bars axial force demands due to concrete dilation and prying action were investigated through numerical studies. In the first part of this study, the Karagozian and Case Concrete model, which proved to provide reasonable in-plane flexural cyclic inelastic wall response while accounting for concrete dilation effect, was used to investigate the variation of confinement inside the infill concrete, the distribution of passive confining pressures at the steel–concrete interface, and the resulting tie bar axial force demands. Finite element analyses involving C-PSW/CF having different tie spacings, wall depths, and wall thicknesses were performed. In the second part of this study, the influence of plate local buckling on tie bar axial force demand was investigated and explained by prying action. A separate finite element study was performed to investigate the significance of prying action and equations were developed from free-body diagrams. The results showed the significance of the passive confining pressures due to concrete dilation, and prying action due to local plate buckling, on imparting axial forces in tie bars. Neither of these behavior are currently considered as design parameters for tie bars. The numerical analyses and results presented here are intended to provide useful insights and direction for the design and instrumentation of future C-PSW/CF experiments by the broader research community.

Previous studies revealed that oxidative stress and inflammation are the main contributors to secondary injury after traumatic brain injury (TBI). In an earlier study, we reported that lutein/zeaxanthin isomers (L/Zi) exert antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects by activating the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) and nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathways. However, its precise role and underlying mechanisms were largely unknown after TBI. This study was conducted to investigate the potential mechanism of L/Zi isomers in a TBI model induced by a cold injury model in mice. To investigate the effects of L/Zi, male C57BL/6j mice-induced brain injury using the cold trauma model was allocated into two groups (n = 7): (i) TBI + vehicle group and (ii) TBI + L/Zi group (20 mg/kg BW). Brain samples were collected 24 h later for analyses. L/Zi given immediately after the injury decreased infarct volume and blood–brain barrier (BBB) permeability; L/Zi treatment also significantly reduced proinflammatory cytokines, including interleukin1 beta (IL-1β), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and NF-κB levels and increased growth-associated protein 43 (GAP-43), neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and Nrf2 levels compared with vehicle control. These data suggest that L/Zi improves mitochondrial function in TBI models, possibly decreasing inflammation and activating the Nrf2 pathway.

Demirkıran, Nizamettin; Tanaydın, Mehmet Kayra
Abstract: In the present study, the recovery of Cu2+ from the resulting actual leach solution after the leaching of malachite ore in perchloric acid solutions was examined by applying the solvent extraction method. The organic phase was prepared using Acorga M5640 and kerosene. The effects of the initial pH of solution, extractant concentration, Cu2+ concentration, temperature, and stirring speed on the extraction process were investigated. It was determined that the extraction yield increased with an increase in the extractant concentration, initial pH of aqueous solution, stirring speed, and temperature, and with a decrease in the concentration of Cu2+. To prevent or minimize Zn2+ transfer to the organic phase and to ensure maximum Cu2+ extraction from the aqueous phase, the optimal values for the initial pH of the aqueous phase, initial concentration of Cu2+, extractant concentration, temperature, and stirring speed were selected to be 1, 0.152 g/L, 4% (v/v), 25 °C, and 400 rpm, respectively. The stoichiometry and mechanism of the extraction process were determined applying the equilibrium slope method. The changes in the Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy were determined. The changes in these thermodynamic parameters were calculated to be − 3.87 kJ/mol, 64.67 kJ/mol, and 0.23 kJ/(mol K), respectively. Graphical Abstract: The extraction percentage of Cu2+ increases substantially when the initial pH of the leach solution increases from 0.1 to 1. The further increase in the initial pH above 1 does not create an increase in the extraction extent of Cu2+. When the initial pH of the leach solution is higher than 1, the amount of Zn2+ transferred from the aqueous phase to the organic phase increases significantly.[Figure not available: see fulltext.].

To solve the problem of low efficiency of NOx emission reduction in self-reflux burners, this study is based on the concept of coordinated control of self-reflux burner structural and thermal parameters. After completing the structural design and optimization of thermal parameters, we continue to adjust the two key structural parameters: the nozzle axis distance and the length of the cylindrical section, to minimize NOx emissions. These are the two parameters that chiefly affect the mixing of flue gas and fuel gas. The results show that increasing nozzle axis distance can delay the mixing of gas and air and create a more uniform oxygen concentration field for the combustion process. The maximum combustion temperature is reduced from 1973.65 K to 1935.88 K and the volume fraction of NOx in the flue gas is reduced from 188.08×10−6 to 143.47×10−6. However, compared with the nozzle axis distance, the length of the cylindrical section of the burner has little effect on the mixing of the flow field. Under different cylindrical section lengths, the maximum combustion temperature does not change more than 3 K, and the volume fraction of NOx in the flue gas changes within 5×10−6.

In the present study, the protective effects of chrysin (CHR) against testicular damage caused by lead acetate (PbAc) were examined. In this way, 30 min after rats were given 25 and 50 mg/kg/b.w CHR orally for seven consecutive days, 30 mg/kg/b.w PbAc was administered orally. In biochemical analysis of testicular tissue, it was found that PbAc-reduced antioxidant parameters [glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT)], while it increased lipid peroxidation, inflammatory markers [nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), prostaglandin E2 (PGE-2), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS)], and 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG). In the immunohistochemical examination, it was determined that PbAc increased the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and caspase-3. Accordingly, PbAc was found to cause a decrease in sperm motility and an increase in the percentage of dead sperm. However, it has been observed that CHR relieves oxidative stress due to its antioxidant properties, thus protecting against inflammation and apoptosis. It also allowed the CHR sperm parameters to return to control group levels. The results revealed that CHR could be a natural substance to be used in Pb-induced testicular toxicity. Practical applications: Lead (Pb) is an important environmental contaminant heavy metal. Pb is believed to reduce fertility in men. Oxidative stress plays a significant role in the damage caused by Pb to testicular tissue. CHR is an antioxidant substance that occurs naturally in various plants and has various pharmacological properties. In the present study, it was investigated whether CHR has a protective effect against testicular toxicity induced by PbAc. The results revealed that in rats, CHR protects the testicular tissue from PbAc toxicity by showing antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects, thus bringing sperm parameters closer to normal.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ2Investigation of time effect on pectin production from citrus wastes with ohmic heating assisted extraction process
Sabanci, Serdal; Çevik, Mutlu; Göksu, Ali
Pectin is usually extracted by exposure to a high temperature and a specific pH value by conventional methods. However, due to reasons such as low energy efficiency of the process and damage to the pectin, alternative thermal and non-thermal methods are used in the pectin extraction process. In this study, the effect of different processing times (0, 5, 15, 30, 60, 120, 180 min) on pectin extraction was investigated for grapefruit, lemon, and orange samples at 80°C. Besides, it was determined that the electrical conductivity value ranged between 1.46–2.06 S/m during heating, the electrical conductivity value of the pH solution adjusted with sulfuric acid. Accordingly, it was figured out that the total amount of energy consumed increases as the process holding time increases. However, it was determined that there was a decrease in the average power value by turning on–off the system. Practical Application: Pectin is one of the additives used in many areas in the food industry. Pectin is now produced especially from agricultural waste peel. During this production, it is subjected to long processes at certain pH and certain temperatures. With the present study, determination of pectin yield over a wide period of time by using ohmic heating process and total ohmic heating energy was determined. In this way, it is thought that a serious contribution will be made to the literature and industry regarding different industrial agricultural waste peel (orange, grapefruit, lemon) during pectin production.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ2Developing Antibacterial Cotton Fabric with Zinc Borate Impregnation Process
İpek, Yeliz; Ertekin, Özlem
Cotton fabric is a commonly used textile because of its natural and healthy properties. The chemical structure of cotton consists cellulose with a ratio of over 90 %. Cellulose is a natural polymer and cotton fabric is a quiet useful textile because of its better moisture absorption, softness, and easy care properties. Moisture absorbtion property comes from the cellulosic structure of the fabric. However, its features such as being hydrophilic and inclinable to bacterial growth limits its application areas. Antibacterial cotton fabric may be used for hospital textiles such as hospital gowns, patient clothes, wound bandages; food packaging and storage textiles; home textiles like curtain, bed cover; clothing, etc. In this study, a novel environmentally friendly antibacterial cotton fabric was developed. Flame retardant zinc borate was used as antibacterial agent. For this purpose, zinc borate with a formula of ZnO·3B2O3·7H2O had been synthesized with wet chemical precipitation method and cotton fabric was treated with this material via sol-gel impregnation method. The impregnation method for cotton fabric provided a uniform distribution of zinc borate particles and processing the entire volume of the fiber. This method is also suitable for large quantity production processes. In the microbiological studies, Enterococcus which is commonly associated with the nosocomial infections and food spoilage was used. As a result, the antibacterial activity was observed in the fabrics treated with 0.1 mol·l−1 and 0.2 mol·l−1 concentration of zinc borate solutions.

In this study, the protective effects of chrysin (CR) on lead acetate (PbAc)-induced renal toxicity in Sprague-Dawley rats were investigated with biochemical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical methods. In the study, rats were given orally at 30 mg/kg/body weight (BW) PbAc after CR of 25 and 50 mg/kg/BW was administered to them orally (a total of 7 administrations for 7 days). The results showed that CR reduced urea and creatinine levels by alleviating PbAc-induced kidney damage. It was determined that CR decreases PbAc-induced lipid peroxidation due to its antioxidant properties and increases catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities, and glutathione (GSH) levels. It was also detected that CR protects DNA from the toxic effects of PbAc and reduces 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) levels. Biochemical and immunohistochemical findings demonstrated that CR had anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic effects and reduced nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), interleukin-33 (IL-33), prostaglandin-E2 (PGE-2), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), p53 levels, and the activities of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), which were increased with PbAc administration. Moreover, CR was found to increase the levels of aquaporin-1 (AQP-1) and nephrine in PbAc-induced kidney tissue. CR decreased the contents of lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), sodium (Na), and copper (Cu) and increased those of potassium (K) calcium (Ca) in renal tissue. These results indicated that CR considerably alleviates kidney toxicity caused by PbAc.

Kismet, Yilmaz; Dogan, Akar; Wagner, Manfred H.
In this study, three different electrostatic powder coating wastes of thermoset structure were used as fillers for low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of these composites materials are reported. The thermoset powder coating wastes were hydrolyzed using water and alcohol, and then 10%, 20%, and 30% by weight of the deactivated wastes were mixed with LDPE, first in a mechanical dry mixer, and subsequently homogenized by melt compounding in an extruder at about 160 °C. Standard tensile test bars and plate-shaped samples were produced from these homogeneous compounds by injection molding. The effects of adding hydrolyzed powder coating wastes on the properties of LDPE were determined by mechanical, thermal, and morphological tests. Tensile strength and perforation threshold of the sample filled with powder coating wastes decreased to some extent compared to un-filled sample. However, an increase in izod impact and bending strengths has been observed. The results of this investigation demonstrate that powder coating wastes with thermoset structure can be used as fillers in LDPE.

Nepeta baytopii is a poorly studied, endemic Nepeta species (Lamiaceae) of Turkey. For the first time, the biological activities (antioxidant, enzyme inhibition, and cytotoxicity properties) of the hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol, water/methanol, and water extracts and essential oil prepared from N. baytopii aerial parts were assessed. Hydro-methanol (41.25 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g) and water extracts (50.30 mg GAE/g), respectively showed the highest radical scavenging (94.40 and 129.22 mg Trolox equivalent (TE)/g, for 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical and 2,2-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid radical scavenging assays) and reducing (229.37 and 129.55 mg TE/g, for ferric-reducing antioxidant power and cupric-reducing antioxidant capacity assays) capacities in vitro. An interestingly high inhibition was observed for ethyl acetate extract against butyrylcholinesterase (10.85 mg galantamine equivalent/g). The methanol extract showed high cytotoxicity (31.7%) against HepG2 cells. Caryophyllene oxide was identified in high concentrations in the essential oil (39.3%). Luteolin and apigenin and their derivatives were identified from the methanol and water extracts. The results obtained from this study highlighted that the abundance of highly bioactive compounds from Nepeta baytopii ensures the multiple biological activities of the tested extracts, and this suggests a potential use in the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical fields, and therefore should be investigated further.
