Health risk assessment of heavy metal accumulation in fruits exposed to geothermal waters: a case study and global implications

Arslan Topal, E Işıl; Topal, Murat; Çelik, Erdal; Öbek, Erdal

BACKGROUND: The present study investigated the potential health risks of heavy metals (HMs) in the fruits and leaves of mulberry and sour cherry trees exposed to water from Sivas geothermal basin (Turkey). RESULTS: The target HMs were ranked according to their hazard index as: Cd < Pb < Zn < Cu < Ni < Mn < Cr. The total hazard index for mulberry and sour cherry fruits was calculated as 7.87 and 4.57, respectively, and was determined to be well above the safe threshold value of 1.0. At the same time, the calculated cancer risk values exceeded the established maximum limit (1.0 × 10−4) for Ni (6.4 × 10−3) in mulberry fruit and for Cr (1.15 × 10−3) in sour cherry fruit. Ingestion has been identified as the primary route of exposure. The study results showed that Cr and Ni metals were ranked in the order of mulberry fruit > sour cherry fruit > mulberry leaf > sour cherry leaf, and that for mulberry and sour cherry fruit. CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that edible foods exposed to geothermal waters may have adverse effects on human health. Furthermore, the study highlights the necessity of reducing water discharges from geothermal fields and implementing phytoremediation strategies to ensure food safety in geothermally active agricultural basins.

Age- and Sex-Specific Bioaccumulation of Selected Metals in Freshwater Mussel (Unio elangatulus eucirrus Bourguignat, 1860) Populating from Keban Dam Lake (Elazig, Turkey)

Danabaş, Durali; Kutluyer, Filiz; Ural, Mesut; Özçelik, Mehtap; Kocabaş, Mehmet

In aquatic life, environmental chemicals are accumulated by mussels due to their sentinel nature and filter-feeding characteristics. Herein, the present study focused on assessing the concentrations of Cu, Zn, Mg, Mn, Fe, Cd, Pb, Ca, K, and Na levels in freshwater mussels (Unio elangatulus eucirrus) depending on sex and age. For all trace metals, some important differences of bioaccumulations were determined depending on ages and sex. In details, the results indicated that an important age-related accumulation of Mg, Cd, Ca, and K was in females and all trace elements, except Cu, Mg, and K levels in males (p < 0.05). No statistical differences were determined in mean concentrations of Cu, Zn, Mg, and Na. There are statistical differences in Mg, Mn, Fe, and Ca levels between females and males in four aged mussels (p < 0.05). Lead levels were under detectable limits. Overall, metal levels and their toxicity in freshwater mussels should be closely monitored for health of the environment, animals, and humans, since mussels and fish species fed on them are consumed highly in the research region and around.

    Topal, M.; Arslan Topal, E.I.; Öbek, E.

In the present study, the bioaccumulation of toxic/harmful pollutants (Fe, Pb, As, Cd, Cr, Ba, and Mn) by Cladophora fracta in mine gallery water was investigated. For this aim, the reactors planted with C. fracta were placed into mine gallery waters. Bioconcentration factor (BCF), metal pollution index (MPI), and accumulation capacity values were determined. According to the obtained results, the highest concentrations of Cr, Mn, Fe, Ba, Pb, Cd, and As were determined as 24.3 ± 1.2, 858 ± 27, 26,290 ± 87, 11.4 ± 0.6, 117.05 ± 5.8, 47.9 ± 1.4, and 2390.3 ± 11 mg/kg, respectively. BCF values were Fe > Pb > As > Cd > Cr > Ba > Mn. The MPI values of toxic/harmful pollutants according to days were determined as day 1 > 5 > 7 > 2 > 6 > 4 > 3, respectively. As a result, it was determined that C. fracta, which was placed in the mine gallery and exposed to the gallery waters, was effective in removing toxic/harmful pollutants. Therefore, C. fracta can be used as an alternative treatment material for the removal of toxic/harmful pollutants in mine gallery waters.

Investigation of Some Metal Accumulation Ability of Phragmites australis from Poultry Slaughterhouse Wastewaters

    Topal, Murat

In this study, the bioaccumulation of some metals by Phragmites australis plants exposed to poultry slaughterhouse wastewater was investigated. For this aim, Mo, As, Cd, Se, Cu, Zn, Cr, Ba, Ti, Fe, Al, and Mn metals were determined in slaughterhouse wastewaters, P. australis plants, and sediment samples. The uptake of metals by P. australis was investigated. Also, BCF and TF values were calculated and compared with reference plant values. The maximum metal accumulation in P. australis plants exposed to poultry slaughterhouse wastewaters was 5900% for Al and 33.5% for Mn when compared with reference plant values. According to the BCF values, P. australis was bioaccumulative for Mo, Se, and Al. As a result, it was determined that P. australis plant can be used in the remediation of metals found in poultry slaughterhouse wastewaters and would be a good accumulator.

Performance of Cladophora fracta for Bioaccumulation of Critical Raw Materials from Mine Gallery Waters

Topal, Murat; Öbek, Erdal; Arslan Topal, E. Işıl

We investigated the accumulation of critical raw materials (CRMs) in macroalga (green alga Cladophora fracta) in mine gallery water with the aim of presentation of the possibility of using the algae as a bioaccumulator of CRMs. The CRMs investigated in the present study were lanthanum (La), vanadium (V), tungsten (W), scandium (Sc), bismuth (Bi), antimony (Sb), gallium (Ga) and cobalt (Co). The highest concentrations of La, V, W, Sc, Bi, Sb, Ga and Co were determined as 3.16 ± 0.15, 22 ± 1.0, 2.0 ± 0.1, 2.4 ± 0.12, 0.21 ± 0.01, 2.47 ± 0.13, 1.4 ± 0.07 and 7.28 ± 0.35 mg/kg, respectively. Bioconcentration factor values followed the order of La > V>W > Ga > Sb > Bi > Co > Sc. Also, metal pollution index (MPI) is used in order to identify the degree of pollution of C. fracta. The MPI values calculated were between 1.09 and 2.2. As a result, it was determined that C. fracta highly accumulated the CRMs from the mine gallery water and was a good bioaccumulator in remediation technology. In this way, it is possible to minimize or eliminate the environmental risks of the materials in the gallery waters.

Metal bioaccumulation in selected tissues of barb (Barbus sp.) and common carp (Cyprinus carpio, Linnaeus 1758) from the Keban Dam Lake, Turkey

Danabas, Durali; Kutluyer, Filiz; Ural, Mesut; Kocabaş, Mehmet

The aquatic life has been negatively influenced by harmful effects of environmental toxic elements, including heavy metals. The elevated concentrations of metals may be harmful for aquatic animals and human health. Herein, the present study deals with assessment of the bioavailability of metals [cadmium (Cd), chrome (Cr), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), mercury (Hg), nickel (Ni), and selenium (Se)] in organs such as muscle, gills, liver, kidney, and gonad of the commercially consumed Barbus sp. and Cyprinus carpio (Linnaeus, 1758) collected from Keban Dam Lake, eastern Turkey. The fish were captured from four different stations of Keban Dam Lake. Our results indicated that Fe and Zn concentrations were the highest in all tissues of two fish species while Cd concentrations were the lowest levels. In addition, detected metals accumulated in the muscle of common carp at higher levels compared to Barbus sp. The results from the present study also demonstrated significant variations and considerable differences in the concentrations of all 10 elements between the four stations and different fish tissues. Overall, the concentrations of detected metals in the muscle were many folds higher than the permissible level prescribed by some national and international legislation, which raises health risk concerns.

Modelling cadmium bioaccumulation in Gammarus pulex by using experimental design approach

Serdar, Osman; Pala, Aysegul; Ince, Muharrem; Onal, Ali

Recently, although dynamic approaches have been used increasingly to describe metal bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms, the validation of such laboratory-derived modelling is rarely assessed under environmental conditions. The present study aims to evaluate and verify statistical and mathematical models for the bioaccumulation of cadmium (Cd) and to evaluate the suitability of Gammarus pulex as a biomonitor for Cd. To optimise Cd2+ ion bioaccumulation conditions a Box–Behnken design was used and whether G. pulex can be used as an estimated tool to assess aquatic quality was investigated. A Box–Behnken experimental design combined with response surface modelling (RSM) was employed for Cd2+ bioaccumulation in G. pulex. Independent variables including temperature, contact time and Cd2+ ion concentration significance and their interactions were tested using analysis of variance. The selected variables’ optimum values were obtained by solving the quadratic regression model along with by analysing the response surface contour plots. Based on Box–Behnken design, the applied model is significant because model F-value and R2 were obtained as 5121.49, 0.9998, respectively. Bioaccumulation of Cd amount was analysed using electrothermal atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The obtained data suggest that G. pulex can be evaluated as Cd biomonitor.

Study of the bioaccumulation of UO2 2+ onto the green microalgae botryococcus braunii using response surface methodology

Celik, Fatih; Aslani, Mahmoud Ali Asker; Can, Safak Seyhaneyildiz

The bioaccumulation of UO2 2+ (uranyl ion) was investigated by using dry biomass of Botryococcus braunii. Experiments were conducted based on a rotatable central composite design (CCD) and analyzed using response surface methodology (RSM), which was used to optimize the bioaccumulation process. In this goal, the effects of parameters such as initial uranium (VI) concentration, pH, temperature and contact time were studied. The optimum conditions for maximum removal (87%) of UO2 2+ from an aqueous solution were as follows: initial uranium (VI) concentration (55 mg/l), pH (3.6), temperature (46°C) and contact time (74 min). Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms and also thermodynamic parameters like Enthalpy (∆H°), Entropy (∆S°), standard Gibbs free energy (∆G°) were investigated, as well.

Growth and bioaccumulation of cadmium, zinc, lead, copper in Dunaliella sp. isolated from Homa lagoon, eastern Aegean Sea

    Kutlu, Banu; Mutlu, Ekrem

Present study consists the growth of cell and bioaccumulation capacity of Cadmium (Cd), Zinc (Zn), Lead (Pb), Copper (Cu) by Dunaliella sp. isolated from Homa Lagoon, Eastern Aegean, Turkey. Sterile medium f/2 was used for the cultivation. Growth rate, mean growth rate, relative growth rate and generation time of Dunaliella sp. were calculated for determining the growth of cell. In addition, optimum pH values were determined for each heavy metal. Our results pointed out that the optimum time for harvesting Dunaliella sp. was in 8 days. Uptake of heavy metals of Dunaliella sp. showed high tendency for zinc accumulation followed by copper, lead, and the lowest tendency was for cadmium. Highest bioaccumulation of Zn was determined to be 151.64 µg/L at 2.45 of pH under in situ conditions. pH had noticeably affected the bioaccumulation capacity of Dunaliella sp.

Accumulation and Toxicity of CuO and ZnO Nanoparticles Through Waterborne and Dietary Exposure of Goldfish (Carassius auratus)

Ates, Mehmet; Arslan, Zikri; Demir, Veysel; Daniels, James; Farah, Ibrahim O.

Dietary and waterborne exposure to copper oxide (CuO) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) was conducted using a simplified model of an aquatic food chain consisting of zooplankton (Artemia salina) and goldfish (Carassius auratus) to determine bioaccumulation, toxic effects, and particle transport through trophic levels. Artemia contaminated with NPs were used as food in dietary exposure. Fish were exposed to suspensions of the NPs in waterborne exposure. ICP-MS analysis showed that accumulation primarily occurred in the intestine, followed by the gills and liver. Dietary uptake was lower, but was found to be a potential pathway for transport of NPs to higher organisms. Waterborne exposure resulted in about a 10-fold higher accumulation in the intestine. The heart, brain, and muscle tissue had no significant Cu or Zn. However, concentrations in muscle increased with NP concentration, which was ascribed to bioaccumulation of Cu and Zn released from NPs. Free Cu concentration in the medium was always higher than that of Zn, indicating CuO NPs dissolved more readily. ZnO NPs were relatively benign, even in waterborne exposure (p0.05). In contrast, CuO NPs were toxic. Malondialdehyde levels in the liver and gills increased substantially (p<0.05). Despite lower Cu accumulation, the liver exhibited significant oxidative stress, which could be from chronic exposure to Cu ions. (c) 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Environ Toxicol 30: 119-128, 2015.

Bioaccumulation of Copper and Zinc in Freshwater Crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) Fed with Zebra Mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) Collected from Keban Dam Lake, Turkey

Aksu, Onder; Gulec, Azime Kucukgul; Demir, Veysel; Danabas, Durali; Yildirim, Numan; Ozcelik, Mehtap; Can, Erkan; Kocabas, Mehmet

This study is aimed to determine the bioaccumulation of copper and zinc in hemolymph of freshwater crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) fed with zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) collected from Keban Dam Lake. This is the first study on bioaccumulation of Cu and Zn in hemolymph of males and females of A. leptodactylus. The average concentrations of Cu and Zn in the hemolymph samples were found out as 0.54 and 35.07 ppm respectively for male and 0.42 and 15.59 ppm respectively for female control freshwater crayfish. The levels of Zn in the hemolymph of both male and female ones among control and diet groups were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The Cu levels among control and diet groups in female ones were statistically significant (P < 0.05) but not in the male ones (P > 0.05). The results of current study revealed that feed treatment with boiling was not effective at the levels of metal bioaccumulation in hemolymph. It was observed that this metal bioaccumulation is more related with sex differences.

COMPARISON OF HEAVY METALS BIOACCUMULATION BY DREISSENA POLYMORPHA (PALLAS, 1771) AND UNIO ELONGATULUS EUCIRRUS (BOURGUIGNAT, 1860) FROM KEBAN DAM LAKE, TURKEY

Aksu, Onder; Yabanli, Murat; Can, Erkan; Kutluyer, Filiz; Kehayias, George; Can, Safak Seyhaneyildiz; Kocabas, Mehmet; Demir, Veysel

The present study aimed to determine and compare the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in two freshwater species of mussels Unio elongatulus eucirrus (Bourguignat, 1860) and Dreissena polymorpha (Pallas, 1771) in Keban Dam Lake, Turkey. The amount of Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd), Copper (Cu), Lead (Pb) and Uranium (U) were detected. Heavy metals concentrations (ppm) of these heavy metals in U. e. eucirrus and D. polymorpha were 1.071 and 1.376 for As, 0.174 and 0.335 for Cd, 0.004 and 3.817 for Cu, 0 and 0.267 for Pb, 0.004 and 0.267 for U, respectively. Arsenic concentrations in the tissues of both species have exceeded the maximum permission limits in all sampling sites. The concentrations of Cu and U were considerably greater in D. polymorpha specimens than in U. e. eucirrus (p<0.05). The results obtained from the present study showed that both species accumulated heavy metals generally in the following sequences: Cu > As > Cd > Pb >U. The present results indicated that D. polymorpha may be a better bioindicator of environmental pollution than U. e. eucirrus, since it showed a higher accumulation capacity.

BIOACCUMULATION OF COPPER (II) AND CADMIUM (II) FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTION BY PSEUDOMONAS PUTIDANRRL B-252

Uslu, Gulsad; Gültekin, Gulden; Tanyol, Mehtap

The bioaccumulation of copper (II) and cadmium (II) ions by viable P. putida was studied as a function of initial pH, temperature, initial glucose and initial metal ion concentration. Optimum pH value for maximum metal ion accumulation was determined to be 3.0 +/- 0.5 and 4.5 +/- 0.5 at 25 and 30 degrees C for each metal ion, respectively. At a constant glucose concentration, although the increase in initial copper (II) and cadmium (II) ion concentration up to approximately 25 mg L-1 increased bioaccumulation capacity of P. putida for both, all metal ion concentrations tested inhibited the growth of P. putida. High microbial growth and copper (II) and cadmium (II) accumulation yields were found at low initial metal ion concentrations. The cell and bioaccumulated metal ion concentrations and uptake yields in-creased with increasing glucose concentration up to 10 g L-1 at a constant metal ion level for each of the metal ions. Although both metal ions caused on inhibition effect on the growth of the microorganism, P. putida was capable of removing copper (II) and cadmium (II) with maximum specific uptake of 58.42 mg g-(1) and 34.65 mg g(-1) at 25 mg L-1 initial copper(II) and cadmium(II) level, respectively. The results also indicated that, P. putida was more efficient in accumulating larger amounts of cadmium (II) than copper (II) ions.
